The 8th Annual Traci’s Hope fund raiser will be held on Saturday, October 1, at the Firemen’s Field Day Grounds in Apalachin from 12:00 Noon to 6:00 pm, rain or shine. Barbecue, Music Raffles and lots for the kids to do. Admission is $12 adults, $5 kids ages 6-12 years.

All proceeds will benefit those fighting breast cancer in Tioga, Broome and Susquehanna Counties.

Traci’s Hope is a non-profit organization founded by Traci Gibson.

Her family would like to thank you for coming and supporting her dream.

The Tioga Center Pumpkin Festival will be held on Saturday, September 24, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, at Ransom Park, Rt 17C in Tioga Center. Events include pumpkin decorating and carving, baking contests, big pumpkin contest, Chinese auction, raffles, music, exhibits,

An Irish Festival will be held on Sunday, Sept. 11, on the grounds of St. Francis Xavier Church in Friendsville, Pa. The festival hours are 12:00 Noon to 7:00 pm. There will be an 11:00 am Mass in St. Francis Xavier Church before the festival. Music at the Irish Festival will be provided by The Irish Lads and Old Friends. Free Hot Dog Roast & Yard Sale Bridget Kane and Ann Ellis, candidates for the Tioga County Legislature, are pleased to announce that a free Hot Dog Roast and Yard Sale will take place from 12:00 Noon to 3:00 pm on Saturday, September 10, at Hickories Park in Owego.

The roast will include a free hot dog, chips, and a soda for all attendees and music will be supplied by DJ NO-1. The main feature of the event is a yard sale of reasonably priced items including household goods, children’s toys, and books.

All proceeds from the yard sale go to purchase lawn signs for the campaigns of Bridget Kane, who is running for the Tioga County Legislature in District 2, and Ann Ellis, who is running for the Tioga County Legislature in District 4.

Both Kane and Ellis are running as Independents and created The Tioga United Party in an effort to convey their conviction that the only way to meet the challenges facing Tioga County in the immediate future is through county leadership united in the wish to do what is best for all of our citizens.

Tioga United Way Welcomes New Director The Tioga County United Way Board of Directors is pleased to announce that they have selected Mr. Brian Eldridge as their new Executive Director, effective August 23, 2011.

Mr. Eldridge comes to the United Way after thirty years of service with NYSEG as well as recent experience with Corning Natural Gas Corporation and Synergy Energy Holdings, LLC. During his career, Mr. Eldridge has served as President of the United Torch Fund of Gowanda, Chairman of the

Board of Tri County Memorial Hospital and was a founding member of the Southern Tier Health Coalition. Additionally, while with Corning Natural Gas, he very successfully chaired the United Way campaign for the corporation. He also serves as a volunteer for the CHOW Pantry at Northminster Presbyterian Church.

Mr. Eldridge looks forward to continuing the good work of Tioga United Way along with its Board of Directors.

He looks forward to meeting everyone at this year’s Campaign Kick-Off celebration to be held on September 15, 2011 at the Tioga County Boys and Girls Club.

1st Annual 5K Harvest Fun Run: Strides Toward Health!

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Tioga County is hosting its first annual 5K Harvest Fun Run: Strides Toward Health event. This event was developed in collaboration with National Family Health and Fitness Day to promote wellness to Southern Tier families and individuals. All ages are encouraged to participate. Funds raised during this event will support Cornell Cooperative Extension, Tioga County’s Community Wellness Programs. It

will be held Sunday, September 25 at Hickories Park in Owego. Registration opens at 1pm, race starts at 2pm. Preregistration is open now through September 12 – includes a T-shirt: Adults 18 and up: $18, Youth 10-17 $12. Day of registration: Adults $20, Youth $15, Kids free.

Apalachin Lions Peace Poster Contest The Children Know Peace is the theme for the 2011 Peace Poster Contest. The Apalachin Lions Club is sponsoring the program in two local schools. Students ages 11 through 13 are eligible to participate. Students select a medium as outlined in the contest rules and draw, paint or sketch

their interpretation of the theme. The deadline is October 7, 2011.

Lion Vince, who is close to 50 years of service in Lionism, has worked on all of the club projects. His current focus as chair of membership has resulted in increased membership and retention of current members. A second project which Vince works tirelessly on is the Christmas Baskets for the needy. He is dedicated to working with the community on gathering food and gifts for children and families that receive these baskets from the club.

Lion Terry White of the Apalachin Lions Club has been awarded the Humanitarian Lion of the Year by District 20- E2. This is a reflection of his effort on Drug Awareness programs, coaching Special Olympics, Peace Poster Contest and the Boy's and Girl's Committee, which includes the awarding of scholarships to graduating seniors at four local schools and the HOBY program where participants from two local schools are sought to participate in a leadership program. Lion Terry has chaired and advanced the function of the Boy's and Girl's Committee for the last 7 years.

By Chef Nick Cavataio These recipes are not fancy culinary creations by any means, but they are just right for any occasion.

Blue Cheese Bacon Burgers 1 pound ground turkey 4 thin slices of Canadian bacon 3 ounces blue cheese, crumbled ¼ teaspoon onion powder ¼ teaspoon hot pepper sauce ¼ teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon Worcestershire sauce 4 hamburger rolls In a large bowl, mix the ground turkey, blue cheese, Worcestershire sauce and the rest of the seasonings. Cover, and refrigerate for 2 to 3 hours. Preheat grill for medium high heat. Gently form the burger mixture into 4 patties.

Oil the grill grate. Grill patties until done, about 5 minutes per side. Serve on rolls.

Strawberry Pretzel Salad 1 ½ cups crushed pretzels 4 ½ tablespoons white sugar ¾ cup butter, melted 1 cup white sugar 2 (8 oz) packages cream cheese 1 (8 oz) container frozen whipped topping, thawed 1 (6 oz) package strawberry gelatin 2 cups boiling water 1 (16 oz) package frozen strawberries Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix together the pretzels, 4½ tablespoons sugar and melted butter. Press into the bottom of a 9x13 inch pan. Bake for 10 minutes, or until lightly toasted. Set aside to cool completely.

In a medium bowl, beat the sugar and cream cheese until smooth. Fold in whipped topping. Spread evenly over the cooled crust. Refrigerate until set, about 30 minutes.

In a medium bowl, stir together the gelatin mix and boiling water. Mix in frozen strawberries, and stir until thawed. Pour over cream cheese mixture in pan. Refrigerate until completely chilled, at least 1 hour.

Sauerbrey Announces Run for Re-Election

Martha Sauerbrey is officially announcing her run for the Tioga County Legislature representing District 2.

Martha Sauerbrey, Marte as she is better known, has served on the Tioga County Legislature since 2005. Marte serves as committee chair of Public Safety which includes Road Patrol, Corrections, DWI Program, Probation, Fire Safety, and the Office Emergency Management. For the past three years she has served as Deputy Chair of the Legislature.

Marte’s focus on the legislature has been to keep property taxes low. For the past several years she worked on a special budget committee whose goal it

was to cut costs and reduce the size of government by working on creative ways to reduce spending.

“Responsible fiscal management is of utmost importance; taxes must be kept low yet we must serve the needs of the community. It is critical that Tioga County keep taxes down,” says Sauerbrey. “The two largest concerns of people in my district are taxes and jobs. My goal is to reduce taxes and get more jobs in Tioga County.”

Marte and her husband Lew are lifelong residents of Tioga County.

They live in the Village of Owego; have four grown children and one grandchild. Marte is employed by the Tioga County Chamber of Commerce and serves as President and CEO of that organization.

Most recently Marte was recognized by the Susquehanna Chapter of NYS Women Inc. as 2010 Women of Achievement.

Marte is practical and good at problem solving. She is proud to represent her constituents and listens and acts on their concerns. Over the years Marte has worked to develop a positive working relationship with county employees and legislators. She fells strongly that government can be responsive and efficient, bringing the best value to the Tioga County taxpayers.

Several United Methodist Churches in the Apalachin area are coming together to offer a special service on the 10th anniversary of the tragedy of September 11.

This September 11 not only marks the 10th anniversary of the events that shook the nation, but also falls on a Sunday.

In addition to their regular morning services, the following churches are working together to plan a special community service to mark the event. They include: Apalachin’s Park Terrace Community and Apalachin United Methodist Churches, Endicott’s Campville United Methodist Church, Little Meadows’

Ryan Crispell (16) a member of Boy Scout Troop 32 in Apalachin, son of Wayne and Cindy Crispell, is pictured above working on his Eagle Scout Project along with Marty Donovan. Ryan has been in scouting since he was in 1st grade. For his Eagle Scout Project, Ryan chose to recoat fire hydrants in Apalachin. Ryan noticed that over the years the hydrants had become faded. Our volunteer firefighters need to be able to easily see and access the hydrants during a fire emergency. This project was very important to Ryan because he is currently a member of the Apalachin Fire Department and plans to pursue a career in Fire Science.

Ride for the Library The Tappan Spaulding Memorial Library in Newark Valley is planning its first annual Fundraiser, “Riding for the Library,” on September 17, 2011.

Adult participants will cycle from the Newark Valley Library to the Berkshire Free Library and back approximately 12 miles. Children under 18 will ride from the Trout Ponds Park to the end of Elm Street. Adult participants will acquire monetary sponsorships for how many miles they can ride while

children acquire monetary sponsorships for how many trips they can make.

Registration for adults is $10.00, registration for children is $5.00. Registration fee includes a t-shirt, and bottled water the day of the ride.

Joe Doty announces Candidacy for the Town of Candor Supervisor Joe Doty, one of six children, was born and raised in the Southern Tier. Joe lives in the town of Candor with his wife and five children. He has been an active member in this community for the past twenty years.

Joe Doty has over a decade of management experience. Whether it is a group of four employees or as many as three dozen, Joe has successfully exercised his management skills to benefit the parent company.

Of his time in the work force, Joseph Doty spent nearly twenty years working with customers one-on-one. His main priority in that time was to ensure the best treatment of anyone and everyone walking through his doors.

Wanting to take a leadership role in

his community, Joseph Doty has been involved in town events for years. He has volunteered for local initiatives often, working to better his community.

Joe was most recently elected to a threeyear position on the Board of Directors in the Tioga Chamber of Commerce in 2007 and serves on the Leadership Tioga Advisory Board.

Joe feels strongly that open communication between the citizens and elected members of government is extremely important. “It‟s important to hear from the community about their concerns, what they care about and what is important to them. That is what I plan to do” says Doty. “Teamwork is critical in getting things done.”
