Tioga Turns The Tide: Our Community Celebrates A Year of Progress

Number 9

Nichols Community Day Held on Labor Day

The Nichols Community Day Parade started at 10am from Cady Avenue.

One year ago, in September 2011, our community suffered the worst flooding in recent history. The Village of Owego and some community members are working together to recognize the event’s impact on our community and celebrate the progress the community has made in the last year. Jana Inglasbe, Long Term Recovery Committee Member said “Rebuilding is a long process and we aren’t done yet. We believe it’s important to gather as a community and celebrate the fact that we are here, we will rebuild and we will continue to move forward together.” To celebrate the progress made towards recovery the community has two events planned. Starting at 5:00 pm on Friday, September 7, The Village of Owego is hosting a block party in downtown Owego complete with amazing

specials from downtown merchants, live music and fireworks. The event continues Saturday, September 8, from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm as Tioga Opportunities, Inc. hosts a community picnic at the Countryside Community Center on Sheldon Guile Blvd. in Owego. The community picnic will feature a free BBQ, bingo, games, bounce house, and lots of goodies for the kids including a display of fire trucks, free bike helmets and car seats. The fireworks will be launched from Draper Park and are the fireworks originally scheduled for the 4th of July. The Village of Owego and the event planning committee would like to thank Visions Federal Credit Union for their generous support of the fireworks. Details of the events can be found on pages 6 & 12 (Events may be added)

When the girls of Girl Scout Troop 113 heard that the annual Nichols Old Home Day was not going to happen this year because of the damage caused by last year's flood to Kirby Park, they put their efforts together to seek a solution. They girls have come to expect getting together with friends and neighbors for a last celebration before school starts. To

keep the community spirit alive and to build upon it, Troop 113 and its leaders and their created advisory board, put together a plan for Nichols Community Day within an unbelievably short time. The Community Day included a parade, games, sales, artists and vendors selling wares, music, and food.
