Traci's Hope Fund Raiser on Oct 6

The 9th Annual Traci's Hope Fund Raiser will be held on Saturday, October 6, from 12:00 Noon until 6:00 pm at the Apalachin Field Day grounds in Apalachin. All proceeds from the event will benefit those fighting breast cancer in Broome, Tioga, and Susquehanna Counties. The event features a BBQ, music, raffle table, and lots for the children to do. The event will take place rain or shine. Cost is $12 for adults and $5 for children ages 6 to 12. Traci's Hope is a non-profit organization founded by Traci Gibson who knew firsthand the difficulties of keeping finances afloat while
dealing with breast cancer. Traci wanted to ensure that she was helping many people even after she was gone. To date, Traci's Hope has helped hundreds of people, all of them here in our local communities, just as Traci wanted. With the community support, Traci's Hope has been able to increase the monetary amount given to each recipient. When Traci's Hope first started, they were able to give each recipient $500. Now they grant each recipient $1,000. Traci's family would like to thank you for supporting her dream to help others afflicted with breast cancer in some way.
Tioga United Way Starts 2012-13 Campaign The Tioga United Way held its 20122013 annual campaign kick-off on September 13 at the Tioga County Boys and Girls Club. Partner Agencies and businesses attended the buffet dinner hosted by the Tioga County Boys and Girls Club to announce the 2012-2013 Campaign goal of $300,000 and hear first-hand accounts of Tioga United Way’s positive impact upon four Partner Agencies: A New Hope Center, ACCORD, Southern Tier Alternative Therapies, and the Red Cross.

Newark Valley Apple Fest to Include Dancing
At this year's Newark Valley Apple Fest on October 6 and 7, you can enjoy watching Morris Dancers: the BF Harridans on Saturday and Heartwood Morris of Ithaca on Sunday. Candor Fall Festival - Oct 5, 6, and 7 Mix in scarecrows, quilts, wood carvings, baked goods, tours, yard sales, a 5K race, a variety of other great experiences and you have the 2012 Candor Fall Festival. The annual event, sponsored by the Candor Chamber of Commerce, will take place Columbus Day Weekend, October 5, 6, and 7 throughout Candor. New this year is the scarecrow contest which is open to all Candor residents and organizations. Businesses and organizations throughout Candor will sponsor open houses, bake sales, a 5K run, a community sing, antiques, yard sales, dinners, special sales and more. The 17th annual quilt show will be at the EMS Building on Main Street and the popular woodcarvers show will be at the Candor Fire Station on Owego Road. Other popular events include the Iron Kettle Farm Spooktacular Display; goat farm
tours, goat cheese, wine tasting, antiques, crafts, and an atlatl contest at Side Hill Acres Goat Farm on Spencer Road; anniversary celebrations; campground tours at Aspen Family Campgrounds; open houses at Tioga State Bank, The Petal Pusher, Millpond Antiques, Route 96 Power & Paddle and the American Legion Post. Yard sales will be sponsored at Warner’s Stoker Stoves site on Owego Road and by the Candor Chamber at 228 Owego Street. Punk’s Place will have special dining and a DJ. There will be a boiled dinner at the Episcopal Church. There will be a bake and book sale at the Candor Free Library and a 10th anniversary celebration at Pucky Huddle Delight on Owego Road. A Ribbon Cutting Ceremony was held on September 26 at the Calaboose Grille, a new restaurant at 176 Main Street in Owego. An Open House followed the ceremony. The Calaboose Grille, located in the historic old Tioga County Jail Building, features a full bar, indoor and outdoor seating, heated patio and jail-cell dining. Their new American cuisine features
fresh made-to-order food with local and seasonal ingredients, salads, gourmet sandwiches, fresh burgers, pasta, steaks, homemade desserts and more. Apalachin Lions Club News Sight Night Sight Night places the focus on giving this Halloween. This year, some kids will collect more than candy on Halloween. They’ll help Give the Gift of Sight by gathering used eyeglasses while they trick-or-treat in our community. Apalachin Lions along with Tioga Hills and Apalachin Elementary School will be collecting glasses from October 22 through November 1. The used eyeglasses they collect will be recycled and hand-delivered by Lens Crafters and Lions Club volunteers to people who can’t afford them in developing countries such as Mexico, Bolivia, Laos, and Thailand. Look for your used eyeglasses and sunglasses in every nook and cranny of your home or place of work. Someone may come to your door looking for all types of prescription and nonprescription glasses. Children’s glasses are especially in need, as they are in high demand but in short supply. Whether they are big or small, fashionably ‘in’ or ‘out,’ your glasses could change how
someone in a developing country sees the world. If the “ghouls and boys” don’t make it to your house on Sight Night, have no fear. Used eyeglasses can be dropped off year-round at all Lens Crafters stores or the Apalachin Lions Club. Runners Wanted - 5K Walk/Run The Apalachin Lions Club is hosting its Inaugural 5K Walk/Run on October 20, 2012. It will be held at the Apalachin Fireman’s Field Day Grounds at 10:00 am with Registration opening up at 9:00 am. The race will help to benefit the Apalachin Lions Club Activities Fund, with all proceeds going back into the Apalachin/Little Meadows Communities. The entry fee for this is event is $18 (pre-registration and includes an official race T-shirt) and $20 (day of the race, with limited T-shirts available); also a small snack will be available after the race. There will be prizes awarded to the Over winner, Top Male, Top Female, and several different ago brackets. There will also be a Kids Fun Run during the race. Immediately following the 5K run the Apalachin Fire Department will be hosting its annual fall Open House with a Chicken BBQ starting at 12:00 Noon on the grounds. The Ti-Ahwaga Community Players will present Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman October 5, 6, 7, October 12, 13, 14, and October 19, 20, 21 at the TiAhwaga Performing Arts Center, 42 Delphine Street in Owego. Death of a Salesman revolves around the last days of Willy Loman, a failing salesman, who cannot understand why he didn't win success and happiness. Through a series of tragic, soulsearching revelations of his life we discover how his quest for the 'American Dream' kept him blind to the people who truly loved him. "There is no questioning the fact that Death of a Salesman is a timeless and classic work," director James Osborne said. "The writing of Arthur Miller, one of America’s most distinguished playwrights, contains several layers of family dynamics and social commentary as vibrant, relevant and powerful today as it was at his writing of the play in 1948. The challenge of directing this play is in presenting Willy Loman, the common man, with all of the deep emotions evoked by his troubled family relation-
ships while surrounded by the power of business and competition." The cast includes Greg Fusare as Willy Loman, Deb Schaaf as Linda Loman, Stephen Marquardt as Biff Loman, Ryan Kay as Happy Loman, Stan Zawatsky as Charley, Reidan Pitarresi as Bernard, Stacey Jo Oropello as The Woman, Doug Benish as Howard Wagner, Scott Douglas as Stanley, and Kate Hoy as Miss Forsythe. Shows start at 8:00 pm on Friday and Saturday and at 2:00 pm on Sunday. General admission is $18. Friday admission for students with ID cards is $10. Sunday admission for seniors 60 and over is $15. Tax-Aide Volunteers Needed for 2013 Season The AARP Tax-aide program needs volunteers to support the free income tax preparation assistance for the elderly and low-income families. The commitment is from February 1 to April 15, 2013, at locations around Broome County. Volunteers do both Federal and New

Vestal Schools Recognized Vestal Hills Elementary School was one of the 269 schools recognized on September 7 by U. S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan as 2012 National Blue Ribbon Schools based on their overall academic excellence for making progress in improving student academic achievement levels. Vestal Hills Elementary School was one of the schools awarded this distinction, as an Exemplary High Performing School.

Tioga Business Show 2012 - October 4 The Tioga County Chamber of Commerce invites the community to join them as they host their Annual Business Show -Tioga Business 2012! The event will be held Thursday, October 4, at the Owego Treadway Inn and Conference Center. The show opens at 9:30 am and ends at 4:00 pm. An Official Opening Ceremony will be held at 10:00 am with a Ribbon Cutting to kick off the event. The theme of the show this year is “Hats Off To Business” and recognize the contributions business makes to our community. New businesses are participating along with others who have participated since the first event in 1999. Several restaurants will offer food samples throughout the day. The Binghamton Senators are bringing the inflatable Slap Shot Den, selling chances for everyone to enjoy and proceeds benefit the Tioga County Boys and Girls Club.

A break out session sponsored by The Partners Insurance and Excellus BCBS will present a Health Care Reform Update: How will this affect your business? Sessions will be held from 11:00 am to 12:00 Noon, and again from 1:30 to 2:30 pm. The business show is open to the public and there is a cost for attendance this year. Tickets may be purchased at the Chamber for $1 until October 3. Tickets may also be purchased at the door for $2.

A Ribbon Cutting Ceremony was held on September 14 at Taylor Garbage Service's new state-of-the-art, no-sort Recycling Facility at 5730 Route 434 in Apalachin. An Open House was held after the ceremony. Taylor Garbage Service, a local family-owned company, and their subsidiary company, Southern Tier Recyclers, came together to create the new facility which will be operated by Southern Tier Recyclers. The 30,000 square foot Sin-
gle Stream recycling facility includes both mechanized and hand sorting for maximized material recovery from the waste stream. The specialized sorting and identification equipment allows the plant to process up to 25 tons an hour of mixed recyclable materials. The advent of this facility will allow for expansion into new territories and the opportunity to bring recycling to areas that do not currently enjoy a recycling program of any kind.

A riding accident around Noon on August 22 resulted in a young 4-H girl's horse running away. The horse, named Ghostie, is a flea bitten grey (almost white with little brown freckles all over), about 14 hands (small horse/large pony sized). He may still be wearing a black synthetic saddle, and a light brown bitless bridle. The accident occurred in Apalachin, in the vicinity of McFall Road, McFadden Road, Rhodes Road, the power lines, etc. The horse was tracked to the Apalachin Creek the day of the accident but, has NOT been seen since that day. He may be very shy and scared. He could be anywhere in the vicinity of Pennsylvania Avenue, near Chestnut Ridge in Apalachin, all the

News Briefs • The Tioga United Way recently awarded a $500 special allocation to the Tioga County Rural Ministries for the support of their food pantry. • Tioga County Rural Ministry has a new Executive Director, Sister Mary O'Brien, a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet. Sister Mary served for the past nine years as Pastoral Associate at St. Catherine of Siena Church in Ithaca.
The Apalachin Lions Club, in conjunction with their parent organization Lions Clubs International, is sponsoring a sophomore student from Owego Free Academy and Vestal Senior High School to participate in the regional Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) workshop. It will be held in the spring of 2013. The Apalachin Lions believe that HOBY will benefit the participant as well as his/her peers, the school, and the community at large. TIOGA COUNTY VETERANS NEWS Recall Service That Made You a Veteran Each veteran has a story just waiting to be told. Volunteer now for the Veterans in the Classroom Program. Students want to hear service stories first hand. Once the veterans get talking the tales flow freshly. Students want to show the veterans that they care and that they want to thank them for their sacrifices. Veterans Day 2012 Veterans Day 2012 at 11 am, Sunday, November 11, at the Tioga County Veterans Memorial in Owego. Veterans Day honors veterans of all wars for their patriotism and willingness to serve in the military and sacrifice for our country. Wreaths Across Tioga/Bradford Counties Wreaths Across America is Saturday, December 15. Mission is to Remember, Honor and Teach. Thousands of wreaths will be placed at Arlington National Cemetery and at 500 national cemeteries in the US and overseas. Each church in Tioga and Bradford County is asked to place an evergreen wreath at the front entrance to a cemetery of their choice. Families are encouraged to place wreaths at graves of their veterans. Churches are encouraged to have a wreath ceremony on Sunday
Tioga County Rural Ministry (TCRM) is now taking applications for Holiday Food Baskets for low to moderate income individuals and families. Applications for Thanksgiving end on Wednesday, October 31, 2012. Any Owego resident in need can apply.
