Campville Fire Wire

October was a busy month for fire prevention in our community. The Zion School was the first to come and visit us at Campville Station 1. Firefighter Ford gave a great presentation for the group. He always goes over the "stop, drop and roll" scenario and has a firefighter dress in full gear in front of the children so they aren't afraid when they see one, and goes over fire prevention on their level. All children leave with helmets and books and general prevention knowledge to share with their families. Campville members spent two Sunday afternoons at Jackson's Farm with "Sparky" our dog. The children had a great time visiting with and hugging Sparky and enjoyed the hats, coloring books and pencils that were given out. TJ Watson kindergarten and first graders got a visit from Sparky, Assistant Chief Hickey, Boat Captain Ford. firefighters Brenda, Sharon, Carl, JP, Larry, Brad, Pat and medic Bealo. In the classroom the children were reminded of the "stop, drop and roll" scenario, discussed what a smoke detector does, saw what a firefighter

looks like all dressed in gear and general fire prevention awareness. What a thrill it was to watch firefighter Brenda and JP climb the ladder on the ladder truck when we went outside! Shouts of encouragement were heard loud and clear the higher they went. Each child received a helmet and a book at the end of the program. Our members also were present at the 'autumn festival" at TJ Watson school. Everyone had a great time and the baked goods were umm…so good! Thanks go out to our community who supported our "Doug's Fish Fry" fundraising event. The parking lot was full during late afternoon despite the nasty weather. We've been told they sold over 300 fish dinners! Thank you. We also enjoyed seeing all our community friends at our annual fall pancake breakfast. Thank you for your support. TRAINING One drill night our members were busy with driver training in the TJ Watson parking lot. An obstacle course is set up to test all our drivers' skills. One experienced driver rides in each vehicle giving direction to some of our newer drivers. We spent the next drill night listening to a presentation by Mike Smith, Chemung County Fire Coordinator, dealing with a Line of Duty Death in a fire departments. Thank you Mike for taking the time out of your busy schedule to share this important information with our members. SICK CALL Sending get well wishes to Gary Phelps. All of Campville members extend Thanksgiving wishes to the community. Enjoy a safe holiday.
