Apalachin Lions Club Peace Poster Contest Winners

Winners of the 24th Annual Peace Poster Contest (Children Know Peace) are Alyssa Dudinyak, a student at Owego Middle School (OMS), and Marissa Scott, a student at Vestal Middle School (VMS).

Alyssa and Marissa and their families were guests at the club’s October 26 meeting where Lions event chair Lion Terry White presented each of the winners with a $50 savings bond. Lion President David Whiting expressed the Apalachin Lions’ appreciation to teachers Sue Anderson from OMS

and Leigh Kaminsky from VMS for the time and effort they expended on the project.

The Peace Poster Contest is sponsored by the Apalachin Lions and Lions International. More than 120 students participated in the contest. The posters of Alyssa Dudinyak and Marissa Scott will now go on for judging at the Lions district level. If selected, they will be forwarded to Lions International for judging against entries from over 150 countries.

O Tannenbaum Winter Wonderland Grand Opening Nov. 12 at Tioga County Historical Museum

The Grand Opening of this year’s O Tannenbaum Winter Wonderland will be held on Saturday, November 12, at 10:00 am, at the Tioga County Historical Society Museum at 110 Front Street in Owego.

Everyone is invited, and admission is free.

Enjoy coffee and donuts from Dunkin’ Donuts while listening to music by Rick Pedro. Check out the Holiday Shop and Bake Sale. Explore the special Space Toys Exhibition. And, of course, enjoy the many trees, wreaths, and special items for auction and the beautiful holiday atmosphere.

O Tannenbaum has become a premier holiday event and the most significant fundraiser for the museum, which was affected by the September 2011 flood.

The volunteers at the museum look forward to providing an event for all to enjoy, as the community continues to recover from the recent devastating flood.

Andrew and Noah VanNorstrand of the Great Bear Trio is the featured band for the contra and square dance from 4:00 to 7:00 pm on Sunday, November 20, at Tioga Trails Café, Lake and Main Streets, Owego.

Andrew and Noah use Celtic and Appalachian fiddling traditions in their original material, but are also influenced by Scandinavian harmonies, old-time Country and Bluegrass, Jazz, Swing; New England contra dance, Cajun/Zydeco, classic Rock, Alternative and Blues. In

2004, they were finalists in the “A Prairie Home Companion” Talent from Twelve to Twenty contest.

Vikki Armstrong will be teaching and calling contra and square dances. Contradancing, like square dancing, is done to a walking step and is easy to learn. No experience is necessary. All dances are taught and prompted. Partners not required.

Pancake Breakfast Thank you to all who came to our semi-annual pancake breakfast. During these difficult times it was wonderful to serve over three hundred people from our community. Neighbors sharing their experiences with the flood could be heard throughout the morning. The opportunity to relax, enjoy a breakfast and visit with neighbors from the community was enjoyed by all.

Doug’s Fish Fry Doug’s fish fry was a huge success. They served 320 people and were out of food by 6pm. Thank you for your support.

Fire Prevention Our fire prevention program kept members busy this month. We spent two Sundays at Jackson’s Pumpkin Farm which is always enjoyable with the children visiting Sparky our Fire Dog and seeing the ladder truck.

Most were happy to receive our “fire hats”. One morning was dedicated to TJ Watson grades Kindergarten thru Second Grade. The parents say the children are really paying attention because they come home with “stop, drop and roll”, and a few other

phrases about fire! We ended the month by being at the Fall Festival at TJ Watson.

Training Eighteen of our members attended a CPR / AED class at the station and are now certified to perform CPR. Thank you to all of you for your time and efforts during this training.

Members also had the opportunity to do a hands-on auto extrication exercise at one of our drill nights.

New Members We now have an Emergency Support Services group. This group will support the department during fires, incidents, etc., by providing food and beverages when members are out on calls for a period of time. There is always something for someone to do and we are always looking for new members. Another opportunity for the young people in our community, if you are sixteen (16) and have a desire to join our squad, Campville will be offering a Certified First Responder Class. Registration will be on December 28, at 7:00 pm, at station 1. We welcome you.

Above is a group of the Cornell students that came to help with the flood clean up at the Engelbert Farm in Nichols, NY. In the photo on the left are members of the Engelbert family as well as friends, including Rick Curtis who bused the students to the farm from the university campus.

The Community Care Network of Nichols (CCNN) has been extremely busy helping with the flood cleanup in Nichols, Tioga Center, Barton, and other rural areas of Tioga County.

Thanks to the support of their volunteers, they have been tirelessly distributing supplies out of the DRC located at the Nichols Elementary School. A few short weeks ago, a bus load of Cornell University students came to help with the clean up efforts at the Engelbert Farm. Most recently, members of the AmeriCorps NCCC have been housed at the DRC and have been very busy

helping out the communities. CCNN has been instrumental in coordinating those efforts. The Community Care Network of Nichols is a private not for profit organization which provides services like friendly visits, phone calls, referrals, and community programs. Its focus is the vulnerable population, especially the elderly and handicapped. Since the flood, CCNN has had to take on challenges that are typically not in their realm of service. But, they are committed to serving the communities and standing by them to help in any way they can.

Basketball Clinic to Support Tioga Theater

Symbolic of many of the lovely and architecturally pleasing buildings in the village of Owego is the Tioga Theater on Main Street. This theater has undergone numerous renovations over the years, but has managed to stay afloat. That all changed on September 8, 2011. The Tioga Theater needs our help. Having a theater in the village of Owego is vital, as it not only brings business to our merchants, it provides charm and character – two qualities we must

continue to nourish.

On November 6, from 12:00 Noon to 4:00 pm, Owego Free Academy hosted a basketball clinic to support the Tioga Theater. Head Coach Chris Evans, along with Elmira NotreDame Coach Bill Hopkins, ran the clinic, which was open to both boys and girls in grades 3-10. All proceeds will go to support the Tioga Theater.

OCTOBER 2011 PAGE 5 Tioga County Senior Citizens Foundation Grant Program Twenty-six nonprofit organizations in Tioga County have received grants totaling $50,500 from Tioga County Senior Citizens Foundation (TCSCF).

The competitive grants were awarded in the annual grant cycle following reviews by the foundation’s grant committee. Auction to Benefit St. Patrick’s School and Food Bank St. Patrick’s School will host its 5th annual “Splendors 2011” fundraising auction beginning at 6:00 pm, Friday, November 11, at the Owego VFW, 207 Main Street in Owego. The event will benefit St. Patrick’s School with a portion of the auction proceeds donated to the Food Bank of the Southern Tier.

During the September flood, St. Patrick’s School experienced flooding in the basement. Essential systems equipment Rental and a classroom were lost, forcing the relocation of students in preschool through fifth grade.

The Food Bank of the Southern Tier is committed to being the leading hungerrelief organization in the Southern Tier with the mission that no person should go hungry. Because of the flood, this mission has never been more crucial.

Despite its own losses, St. Patrick’s School is honored to continue its auction tradition of donating proceeds to a deserving organization.

Quilters Donate to Tioga United Way Tioga County, like many others in our immediate vicinity, is slowly recovering from the vast flooding damage that took place in September, 2011. The Tioga United Way, in cooperation with Tioga Opportunities, Inc., has been instrumental in channeling the many community donations into positive recovery goals.

Dehumidifiers, heaters and fans are just a few of the items being provided to affected homeowners to aid in their recovery.

Warmth of a different sort has also been distributed by these agencies in the form of hand-made quilts. Beautiful quilts, as part of the “Project Flood Tioga With Quilts” incentive sponsored by Pucky Huddle Delight quilt store in Candor; and quilts, crocheted blankets, and teddy bears made by The Caring Quilters Projects are providing a extra measure of warmth to Tioga homeowners.

Jennifer Kopcho, owner of Pucky Huddle Delight stated that, “My wonderful customers, ladies in the community and quilters as far away as Canada have banded together in this generous effort to donate their time, skills and materials to help other people in need.” Jennifer and her daughter, Julie Van Keuren, have themselves also provided numerous quilts. During a recent sale at her shop, Jen collected a portion of her sales for the Tioga United Way. She has also offered a 20% discount certificate to any

quilter who provides a quilt, twin size or larger, for this effort, through December.

Susan Kampp from The Caring Quilters says, “Tioga County comes first and the people of Tioga County are a very important part of the work that we do.”

The Caring Quilter Project has made over 4,000 quilts since it was created in 2004. Some of their quilts were also given for distribution with the quilting effort being made through the Zion Lutheran Church in Owego.

Quilts from both of these efforts are being distributed through Tioga Opportunities.

The U. S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has approved over $5 million in Disaster Assistance Loans for residents and business owners in New York affected by Tropical Storm Lee. The deadline to apply for physical damage is November 14, 2011.

“Currently, 124 home and business disaster loans have been approved in the amount of $5,768,500 for affected survivors,” said Frank Skaggs, director of SBA’s Field Operations Center East in Atlanta. “We are pleased to be able to get these loans approved so residents and businesses in the disaster area can start to rebuild and resume their normal lives. With the November 14 deadline approaching, I encourage anyone who has not completed their disaster loan application to do so and return it as quickly as possible.”

Church Devastated by Flood Moves Forward

My husband, Pastor Pete Darling, never thought he’d be cutting up trees inside the church hall with a chain saw, but that’s exactly what he did on September 8 after flooded creek water ravaged our church, Faith Christian Fellowship.

Deer Lick Creek along Beach Rd. in Apalachin was so swollen that it diverted and went right through the church. Trees in the torrent smashed into the front corner, which forced the side door open and two trees sailed inside. During the night, trees shattered posts causing the overhanging entryway to topple and the front door to break off.

The next day Pete waded through hipdeep water, ducked around the collapsed overhang, and climbed over a stack of trees that had battered the front of the building.

Slogging through the mud inside felt like quicksand. Water had rushed through the lower level from floor-toceiling, breaking windows and left a watermark nearly three feet high on the ground floor. Three inches to a foot of mud covered the floors on both levels with ruined furnishings strewn about topsy-turvy. Thankfully the sanctuary was spared since it’s on a higher level.

But the parking lot looked like a creek bed.

Joel Lanz witnessed the flood and watched as trees drifted inside. A few days later, he and some friends helped with the cleanup effort. The crew shoveled mud into buckets, carried them upstairs and emptied them into wheelbarrows to be dumped on a pile outside.

Lanz tried using an industrial hydroseeding unit, which can operate like a sump pump, to clear the mud in the basement, but the mud was too thick and heavy and took longer than the method they’d been using. So it was back to shoveling.

To make things easier, Jeff Rudler brought his skid steer and the mud was loaded on its bucket to be dumped.

Rudler left the skid steer for the church to use, along with a generator.

die Wavra, whom we’d never met, just showed up unannounced. Stan Payne came with his dump truck, backhoe and bucket loader to move trees. Bob Hollenbeck, who plows snow on our parking lot, brought his equipment and is doing outside work. We are so grateful.

I have a broken wrist, so I did everything I physically could with one hand, in addition to coordinating workers and purchasing and gathering supplies.

I’m so appreciative of the Apalachin Fire Department for the kind-hearted volunteers who gave out masks, cleaning supplies and water. The United Methodist Church in Apalachin let our workers use their restrooms and even gave us a dinner meal. Also, a big thanks to the crews who picked up the piles of debris and worked on the creek.

I drove by New Life Ministries tent, set up along Main St. in Apalachin and stopped to get a few bag lunches. One of the women asked if there was anything else we needed.

What we really needed was help— bodies. Even though church members and others shoveled endlessly, it was still a daunting task. Pete had shoveled mud every day for a week and was exhausted.

We still had three-fourths of the lower level to do and needed more rugged guys.

Later that day, thirteen young people and adults from New Life arrived and helped with the mud-busting effort!

We were thrilled. We really needed the encouragement. The presence and enthusiasm of all the volunteers over the last month lifted us up and kept us going during this difficult time.

In addition to family and friends, members of the Triple Cities Ski Club pitched in, along with Pete’s YMCA coworkers, where he works part time as a fitness instructor. Members of the Independent Community Bible Church in Little Meadows assisted, as well as teams organized by Calvary’s Love church in Johnson City, and a group from Alfred College. Fifty “Order of the Arrow” Boy Scouts had a blast demolishing sheet rock in the basement with sledgehammers.

Normally, we’re the ones who reach out to others, but we really needed assistance this time. We’ve been truly blessed by the goodness of the people in this community and surrounding area.

“God will provide. He’ll take care of us,” Pete said in his sermon, citing the hymn, “God Will Take Care of You,” which came to mind after the flood, especially when we found out that the insurance company wasn’t covering our damages. We’re thankful for the donations we’ve received so far.

We’re currently meeting at the Independent Community Bible Church’s hall in Little Meadows, Pennsylvania, until our building is ready to move in to. Pete and others have worked at the church nearly every day that Pete isn’t working at the YMCA and we hope to reopen as soon as possible.

Dave Rauschmeier, a bowling buddy of Pete’s, stopped at the church shortly after the flood and stood with his mouth open, staring in disbelief.

“From what I first saw with all that mud inside, and now a month later—I can’t believe the mud is gone,” said Rauschmeier, a contractor who volunteers his time to help renovate the church. “It’s amazing!”

Cooking on the Lite Side The Pumpkin I Didn’t Know

From childhood and through most of my adult life I have always related pumpkin with Halloween. The Jack-O-lantern, something you carve, lite-up at night for a couple weeks until it rots and then discard until you do it all over again next Halloween.

Now after a little research and acquiring a taste for pumpkin flavored food and drink, I have discovered there are also many health benefits to enjoy. This wonderfully bright orange-yellow fruit being part of the squash family is rich in antioxidants, loaded with potassium, zinc and fiber. And let’s not forget the pumpkin seed; there have been many stories giving the pumpkin seed credit for a healthier prostate. Why you ask? It is the protective compounds within the little green seed called phytosterols that may be responsible for shrinking the prostate. So, with all that said let’s move on to couple yummy standby pumpkin recipes.

Spiced Pumpkin Bread 1 (15 ounce) can pumpkin puree 4 eggs 1 cup vegetable oil 2/3 cup water 3 cups white sugar 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons baking soda 1 1/2 teaspoons salt 1 teaspoons ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Grease and flour three 7x3 inch loaf pans. In a large bowl, mix together pumpkin puree, eggs, oil, water and sugar until well blended. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and ginger. Stir the dry ingre-

Mix thoroughly and place in shallow baking dish. Bake for one hour, stirring occasionally.

Lions Helping with Tioga Flood Recovery The Apalachin Lions have set up on its web page (apalachinlions.com) the following three forms for your convenience: • Survey of Housing Status 1. Would you like temporary housing?

• The Flood Recovery Work Request This form should be submitted if you

need help with clean up, tear out, or rebuilding.

If you need heaters, dehumidifiers, or fans, use this form.

• A Volunteer Workers Sign-In Sheet This form should be submitted by every person who did volunteer flood related work on his or her own home, work on any other property, such as tear out, clean up, rebuilding, shelter work, coordination of flood relief efforts etc.

Hours submitted will be credited to the local municipalities 12.5% share of flood costs.

TIOGA COUNTY FLOOD INFORMATION FROM THE

APALACHIN LIONS CLUB The Lions Club encourages every person who has worked on flood relief to take the time to fill out the VOLUNTEER WORKERS SIGN-IN SHEET. If properly documented, the hours on these sheets will be applied to the 12.5% share of the municipalities cost of flood related efforts such as road repair, trash removal, and the multitude of other expenses caused by the flooding.

All volunteer time spent on your own property, or in helping other people, should be recorded. Any and all flood related volunteer work is eligible. Clean out, tear out, rebuilding, working in a shelter, recording or coordinating aid related activities, etc. should be put on the work sheet.

You may have more than one person’s time on a sheet, and you may submit as many sheets as necessary to report all hours worked. If you are still engaged in voluntary relief efforts

we suggest you submit a record of hours worked to date, and periodically claim future hours on new sheets.

Make sure you accurately record the location, i.e. TOWN OF OWEGO, or VILLAGE OF OWEGO. Separate work sheets should be used for work performed in different municipalities.

The information on these sheets will be forwarded to FEMA and the eligible hours will be credited at the rate of $20.00+ per hour toward the municipalities flood cost.

~ ARE YOU READY FOR DEER SEASON? ~ HOBY Leadership Workshop The Apalachin Lions Club, in conjunction with our parent organization (Lions Clubs International), is sponsoring a sophomore student from Owego Free Academy and Vestal Senior High School to participate in the regional Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) workshop. It will be held in the spring of 2012.

The Apalachin Lions believe that HOBY will benefit the participant as well as his/her peers, the school, and the community at large. Ask your guidance department Kim Hakne at Owego Free Academy, and Rebecca Martino at Vestal Senior High School, about HOBY.

Christmas Basket Program With less than two months until Christmas, the Apalachin Lions is again preparing to help those people in Apalachin (zip 13732), Campville (zip 13760) and Little Meadows (zip 18830) who are in need of a Christmas basket.

Penn York Jewish Community Establishes Fund with the Community Foundation The Penn York Jewish Community (aka Beth Israel Congregation) recently established an Endowment Fund for its charitable activities with the Community Foundation for the Twin Tiers (CFTT) with an initial contribution from the Skeist family.

The purpose of the fund is to support the charitable, scientific or educational purposes of the Penn York Jewish Community for the benefit of the community. The fund shall be

known as the Beth Israel Congregation Fund.

Healthy Community Partnership The Tioga County Healthy Communities Partnership (TCHCP) is seeking proposals from not-for-profit organizations, educational institutions, and municipalities that are committed to being active, long term participants in the TCHCP. Proposals should address the following disease areas: obesity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes or their risk factors. Project proposals should also include policy, system or environmental changes that lead to sustainable healthy lifestyle practices for residents of Tioga County.
