O Tannenbaum Winter Wonderland Grand Opening Nov. 10 at Tioga County Historical Museum

Beginning November 10, through December 15, O Tannenbaum, the Tioga County Historical Museum’s annual fundraiser and premier holiday showcase, will open at the museum at 110 Front Street in Owego. O Tannenbaum is one of the largest income generating events for the museum, with multiple trees, wreaths, and other items up for silent auction. The museum donates trees and wreaths to participating businesses and individuals, who then decorate the trees, adding their own personal flare or specialty items. All proceeds from the auction directly benefit the museum and help pay for operational expenses throughout the year. Come visit the museum during this wonderful holiday time event. It is fun for all; whether you are a child or just young-at-heart.

Theatre Company to go Non-Profit and Benefit Communities

Tioga Acting Guild (TAG) will soon be operating as a not for profit theatre group which will offer live theatre at low costs to the community. TAG’s goal and mission is to provide quality theatre while raising funds for local charities and non-profits. TAG hopes to make enough revenue from its theatre productions to be able to donate funds for charitable organizations as well as sponsor cultural events free to the public. This makes TAG stand out from all other theatre companies in the area.

MILITARY SURPLUS

~ ARE YOU READY FOR DEER SEASON? ~

TAG began in 2006 when Tioga Central High School moms Robin Benesh and Kelly Schweiger created it as a means for the high school students to have additional opportunities to be involved with live theatre. Since then, TAG has become a community theatre group, putting on live performances as fundraisers for the Community Care Network of Nichols, Tioga Opportunities Inc., and Winding River Players, Inc.

Virtual Turkey Drive for Food Bank The Food Bank of the Southern Tier announces its 3rd Annual Virtual Turkey Drive, sponsored by Tioga Downs Casino Racing & Entertainment, is underway now through December 31. For the third year, Tioga Downs has provided the Food Bank with a generous gift of $10,000. The gift will be used to distribute turkeys to help feed our neighbors in need during the holiday season. In addition, Tioga Downs will match up to $20,000 in funds raised for the 3rd Annual Virtual Turkey Drive. Donations are tracked by county across the Food Bank’s service area including Broome, Chemung, Schuyler, Steuben, Tioga and Tompkins. 100% of donations raised in each county are used

to acquire turkeys for distribution in that same county. Turkeys are distributed through the Food Bank’s network of more than 160 hunger-relief member agencies including food pantries. Last year’s Virtual Turkey Drive raised over $25,700, allowing the Food Bank of the Southern Tier to provide its hunger-relief member agencies with more than 2,300 turkeys for local families in need. Help provide our neighbors in need with a bountiful holiday meal. Make a gift today to the 3rd Annual Virtual Turkey Drive. Log on to www.foodbankst.org to make a secure online donation.

Remembering George Cheresnowsky, "Mr. Owego Little League Baseball"

George Cheresnowsky, 92, died October 13, 2012. For 59 years, he was "Mr. Owego Little League Baseball" and his wife, Marguerite, was known as "Mrs. Owego Little League Baseball." The second baseball diamond at Hyde Park is named George and Marguerite Cheresnowsky in recognition of their years of dedicated service to the youth of the Owego area. Baseball was George's lifelong love after his family. He was president of the Owego Little League eight times in two decade years of 1962, 1963, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1977, 1978 and 1979 during the league's expanding years. Williamsport tapped George to be Seventh District Administrator in a territory of the Southern Tier that covered from Waverly to Oneonta. He was respected for his dedi-

cation to youth, the principles of Little League Baseball, and the opportunity for all kids to play the game. Having grown up in the Depression, George knew hard times, and he vowed in the 1950s that no kid in OLL would pay to play Little League Baseball. OLL is proud of its 61-year legacy to George's vision. Photographer Fred Brown of The Community Press took and published an Opening Day picture that captures George's lifelong loves and principles. The picture is in the Williamsport Little League Museum. George loved to go to Williamsport for the Little League World Series. George is standing at the Elks Flag Pole between now George and Marguerate Cheresnowsky and Nick Raftis Memorial Fields. He's holding his Williamsport Little League Baseball cap. His right hand is over his heart in a salute as the American and POW flags are raised and the national anthem is sung by Owego Elementary Students/ Athletes. He was a role model for all Little Leaguers for respect to the Stars and Stripes. What's meaningful about this picture? As Elks Youth Chairman George procured and dedicated this flag pole on Independence Day July 4, 1967, to the youth to encourage patriotism, right after OLL moved to Hyde Park from McMaster Street. George is a decorated WWII veteran with battle stars. He was in charge of a 300-soldier motor pool. He used this war time experience to successfully run the OLL in peacetime.

Venison Donation Program - Fight Hunger Did you know that one deer provides approximately 160 servings of highly nutritious ground venison to those in need? The Venison Donation Program partners with the Food Bank of the Southern Tier to help those in need. Legally tagged and properly field-dressed deer can be taken to participating processors at no cost to the hunter. Hunters must call ahead for FREE processing of any deer they wish to donate. The venison is then processed and packaged according to the law and picked up by the Food Bank of the Southern Tier for distribution to neighbors in need through a network of hun-

ger-relief member agencies like soup kitchens and food pantries. How to Donate a Deer to the Hungry: 1. The list of Participating Processors can be found on the Food Bank’s website under ‘Donate Now’. 2. Join thousands of New York State hunters and make a commitment to donate your deer to the hungry. 3. Bring your legally tagged and properly field-dressed deer to the processor. There is no cost to you. Hunters do not have to pay for processing the deer they donate. Processing costs are covered by donations from the public and through state funding.

New Meadowlands LLC President Jeff Gural has named Jason M. Settlemoir as General Manager and Chief Executive Officer of the New Meadowlands, effective Tuesday, November 6. Settlemoir has run Gural's two New York racetracks, Tioga & Vernon Downs, since operations began in 2006 and will remain Vice President of Racing and Sponsorships for both of those properties. The 2006 Lew Barasch Breakthrough Award winner, he is the current USHWA Chairman of the Board, a USTA and HTA Director and the Simulcast Director/second Race Announcer for The Little Brown Jug. "Our focus is on improving the racing experience for the fans, with emphasis on customer service and strict attention to detail," Jason explained. "Jeff's desire is to return The Meadowlands to its rightful position as the greatest harness track in the world and I am honored and excited to have the opportunity to help him realize that goal. I have the support of a strong staff we have assembled at Tioga and Vernon and look forward to working with the

existing Meadowlands employees and New Jersey horsemen. After seven seasons, I know Jeff's priorities and how he wants things done at his racetracks." Jeff Gural had this comment on the decision; "I'm confident in Jason's ability to execute my vision for The New Meadowlands. We share a passion for racing, realize that the status quo isn't working and remain convinced that new ideas and promotions are vital to racing's survival. The success that Jason has enjoyed at Tioga and Vernon along with the experience he has gained and people skills he has developed while in that position have prepared him well for this next step in his racetrack management career." Settlemoir will spend the next two months cultivating the simulcast business at both The Meadowlands and Winners at Bayonne while preparing for the return of live racing at The Meadowlands on December 28. He will commute between the New York and New Jersey properties for the near future and may be reached by phone at (201) 460-4025 or (607) 699-7588 and by email at jsettlemoir@tiogadowns.com.
