CAPTAIN DINOSAUR REPORT
Campville Fire Department Structure Fire - Carmichael Road
On Thursday, 15 December 2022, the Campville Fire Department was alerted at 12:15 pm to a car fire on Carmichael Road, about 1 1/2 miles up from North Avenue.
The first unit on the scene was Ambulance 332 and they reported a well involved car fire near the house. Campville Engine 302, Engine 304, Aerial 301, Tanker 321, Ambulance 331, Fast Response 305, and Fire Police 346 were enroute within minutes. At that time the ambulance crew reported the fire had jumped into the house and was burning rapidly, several explosions were heard and the decision was made to initiate a defensive attack. A request was transmitted immediately for mutual aid from Southside for a tanker, Weltonville for a tanker, and Owego, Newark Valley and Apalachin for Engines and manpower. This was followed by additional help from Candor for water supply and West Corners for a FAST team.
Engine 302, faced with heavy fire on the front side, took position in front of the structure and rapidly deployed two 1 3/4 inch lines and a single 2 1/2 inch line with water flow established from the onboard tank. As the other units arrived a tanker shuttle was put into place to assure a continued supply of water. Candor placed Engine 402 behind the house at a substantial pond and pumped a 4 inch supply line which fed an additional
attack line to the rear and supplemented 302 which engaged a top mounted deluge gun.
A water fill site for the tankers was set up on Rt 38 and fire police controlled traffic so the tankers could have an efficient shuttle route.
Campville Emergency Support Services were activated and provided warm beverage and food to help those involved in the fire related responsibilities.
As the pond supply came on line, the tankers were then released from the scene.
Approximately 15,000 gallons of water supplied by the tankers was applied to the fire and about the same amount was delivered by 4 inch supply hose.
Firefighting and overhaul took approximately 4 hours and about 50 fire personnel were involved. An additional 2 hours was used for reloading the fire apparatus with hose, cleaned, and prepared for the next call. The last units went back in service at about 6:00 pm.
The integration of support between all the local departments was flawless and again, continuous training provides a foundation for well organized operations.
Everyone went home safe, and it is an honor to work with all of you.
