St. Patrick School Donates to Boys & Girls Club
Each November, St. Patrick School in Owego hosts an auction, and part of the proceeds are donated to a local nonprofit organization. Members of the auction committee recently met with Mr. Luke Henson, Director of the Tioga County Boys & Girls Club, to present him with a $1,000 donation. The school is located in the old Stanbrough Mansion which has been expanded over the years by two additions - a two-storey brick addition was added next to the mansion in 1950, and a six-classroom addition was added in back of the mansion in 1967. Special thanks to Toys for Tots and their labor of love on behalf of our children. And thank you to the VFW for sharing their space with us for our toy distribution. To all who adopted families for Thanksgiving and/or Christmas, we are extremely grateful for your extra efforts to reach out in love and compassion.

Candor St. Baldrick’s Shave-A-Thon to Raise Money for Childhood Cancer Research Honor Wall honoring local children fighting cancer. Unfortunately, the collection of photos on Candor’s Honor Wall continues to grow, as one in 285 children in the US will have cancer before they reach 20. Two thirds of the children treated for childhood cancer will suffer long-term effects from the treatment. Right now, less than 4% of the National Cancer Institute’s budget is directed to childhood cancer research. Candor Emergency Squad and the Candor American Legion Family are once again hosting the St. Baldrick’s Shave-A-Thon on Sunday, March 8, from 1:00 to 4:00 pm at the American Legion. Participants shave their heads in solidarity with kids with cancer to raise money for childhood cancer research. In keeping with the origins of St. Baldrick’s, Candor’s event combines the cancer fundraising with festivities related to St. Patrick’s day. There’s food, music, raffles, and a kid’s area with facepainting and crafts. Every year there’s an
This is why volunteers from Candor EMS and the American Legion Family began supporting the St. Baldrick's Foundation, and continue to hold annual Shave-A-Thon events. Since 2005, the St. Baldrick’s Foundation has raised more than $150 million for childhood cancer research grants. Candor organizers would like to see that figure increase, so this year they’re hoping to get at least 50 participants shaving their heads. Shavees are encouraged to register ahead of time, but there will be an opportunity to sign up at the event for last-minute participants.

Chamber of Commerce Awards Dinner, Auction to be held February 5 at Tioga Downs The Tioga County Chamber of Commerce Annual Dinner, Community Awards, and Silent Auction will be held on February 5 at Tioga Downs in Nichols. This year’s theme is “Business in Black and White” which is meant to remind chamber members, distinguished guests, and the community that we need to get back to basics. The importance of shopping locally, supporting community organizations and doing business face-to -face is as basic as black and white. Cocktails and hors d’oeuvres begin at 5:30 with dinner at 6:30 pm. A Silent
Auction will continue throughout the evening with items donated by chamber businesses and supporters. One of the highlights of this event is the presentation of Community Awards. Special recognition is given to those who have made a significant contribution to the community. Cost of the dinner is $40 per person. Reservations and payment are required by January 30, 2015. Apalachin Library Benefit Dinner - February 22 The 2nd Annual Apalachin Library Benefit Dinner will be held February 22 at the Blue Dolphin in Apalachin. Treat yourself to a delicious Blue Dolphin manicotti parm dinner and help raise funds for the Apalachin Library. Adult tickets are $10. Children 12 and under order from the Blue Dolphin’s children’s menu. In response to the tremendous turnout last year, tickets are being sold for specific time slots: 4:00 pm, 5:00 pm, 6:00 pm or 7:00 pm. If you’re not inclined to get dressed up to eat out then
you can purchase takeout tickets instead. Tickets must be purchased in advance by visiting the Apalachin Library at 719 Main Street in Apalachin (625-3333). The Apalachin Library proudly serves the community, supplying numerous programs for children and adults, computer access, and in addition to providing books, videos, and online services on site, taps into the entire Finger Lakes Library System to give patrons access to a large array of media. Weitsman Buying Shares in Competitor Adam Weitsman, president of Upstate Shredding of Owego is in the process of acquiring a significant number of shares of his largest direct competitor, Metalico Inc., in what could result in his seizing control of the company. Metalico is a recycler based in Cranford, New Jersey. According to "American Metal Market" published January 22, Weitsman
has bought 5,562,637 shares of Metalico, which gives Weitsman a 9.54% stake in the company. Weitsman is now the largest shareholder in Metalico, and he now owns more shares in Metalico than Carlos Aguero, Metalico's co-founder, president, and chief executive.
Vestal HS Musical “Big Fish” on Stage The maddening, magical and whimsical relationship between a son and his larger-than-life father is revealed in the musical “Big Fish” to be presented by Vestal High School students Thursday, February 26, through Sunday, March 1. Show times are 7:00 pm Thursday through Saturday with a matinee performance at 2:00 pm on Sunday. Director Austin Kiley, assisted by Lauren Kavacic, leads a cast of 50 student performers. Music Director Gregory Harris will conduct the orchestra, and Quinn Singer is choreographer. Talented high school actors taking the stage for this production include a dual cast with Alex Kosick and Drew Sprague taking turns as “Edward Bloom.”

Cooking on the Lite Side Seven Steps To Meal Planning For Saving Time And Money Now by Chef Nick Cavataio
We all want to make this year our best ever in all areas of our lives. I pray that you are successful. For today, I would like to help with preparing you for happier days ahead in the arena of food preparation and meal planning. When it comes to getting dinner ready, I stopped making New Year resolutions and decided to WRITE down my meal planning goals for the next five to seven days. And to get your family started in the right direction for 2015 lets think Meal Planning. My definition of Meal Planning is having you think about, write down and do the following seven steps. 1. What is needed and wanted in the Pantry & Kitchen Cupboard 2. Grocery List 3. Recipe Ingredient Preparation 4. Recipe Preparation 5. School Lunch Items/Preparation 6. Utensils and Pots & Pans 7. Time Management Let’s use this five day Dinner Menu as an example for what you need and do to accomplish the seven steps. Day 1 - Steak Chili on Rice (made with rib eye steak)
Day 2 - Chicken Fajita Tortillas
Day 3 - Pork Tenderloin Sandwiches Day 4 - Angel Hair pasta with Meat Sauce (made w/90% lean beef) Day 5 - Broiled Tilapia Filets Without doing a full blown five page explanation, we can now break down a quick overview of the seven steps. 1. Look in the pantry for can tomato sauce, kidney beans, chili seasoning, rice, Fajita seasoning, tortillas, bread, pasta 2. Here we just need to make a complete list of all ingredients we don’t have 3. Pre-cook steak, chicken, rice, pasta and ground beef. 4. Have all recipe ingredients for the day portioned, rinsed and readily available 5. School Lunch preparation is the most critical if you want to save money and have healthy lunches. We use a lot of leftovers and peanut butter & jelly. 6. Nothing more frustrating than reaching for the cookware you need, and find it’s not clean. Check out pots, pans and utensils that you will be using ahead of time. 7. This one sounds easy, but we are all very busy and need to plan our meal preparation time.
Teambuilding Workshop Offered The Tioga County Chamber of Commerce will present a Teambuilding Workshop on Friday, February 13, from 8:30 am to 1:00 pm at the Treadway Inn and Conference Center in Owego. Participants will learn about themselves and their interaction with others in a work, organizational team or a group environment; how to enhance their abilities and get the most out of work relationships; help create a supportive and constructive team environment that makes work fun.
Dave Wheelock is the facilitator for this seminar. He is an accredited consultant with Human Synergistics International and holds trainings throughout the country. Dave also owns and operates the Farm Family Insurance office in Owego. The cost is $30 for Tioga Chamber members and $45 for non-members. Educational Grant Program The Owego Apalachin (OA) Foundation for Excellence in Education is now accepting grant applications through February 28, 2015. The OA Foundation for Excellence in Education is a community wide, independent, not-for-profit organization. Its mission is to enhance the education of the students within the Owego Apalachin district boundaries, public & non-public, by providing private funding and stimulating community support for innovative and challenging educational programs. Application forms may be requested until February 28. The application forms can be downloaded at OA Foundation.com up to the February 28 deadline. Completed grant applications must be received or postmarked on or before February 28, 2015.
Grants will be awarded at a ceremony on April 28, 2015, hosted by Braided Cord Cooperative at South Apalachin Baptist Church, 4116 Pennsylvania Avenue in Apalachin. Ideas for grants can be submitted by students, teachers, staff, parents, residents, businesses and/or agencies. The foundation will be looking for ideas that will help prepare students for the challenges of this century and enhance their educational experiences. The foundation encourages grant requests up to $500 per grant. Only one request per program. Multiple grants will be awarded in one period. Grants must be used within one year of acceptance. No stipends will be accepted. No recess or playground equipment will be accepted. No instructor training will be accepted.

Artfully SQUARED Entries Sought Tioga Arts Council is pleased to announce artfully SQUARED, a collaborative art event open to creatives of all ages and skill levels. Here’s how it works: use any medium to make a piece that measures 7” square, donate your artwork to Tioga Arts Council (TAC), and then come see the exhibition and pick up original artwork for your walls! New Executive Director for Boys & Girls Club The Tioga County Boys & Girls Club (TCBGC) Board of Directors has hired a new Executive Director. Katie Tracy is a former TCBGC employee. From 2009-2011, she worked as a Recreational Aide and was then promoted to Program Director. “My past employment for the club has given me a firsthand look at the youth we help and an understanding of why having the club within our community is so vital,” said Tracy. Tracy graduated from Dryden High School and received an associate’s degree from Broome Community College. She left the area for two years to pursue a retail management position and returned to Tioga County to be near family and friends, and to live in a small-town environment where she could be an integral part of the community. Tracy not only brings past knowledge of the inner-workings of the TCBGC, but she also brings an enthusiasm to help the youth of Tioga County through this important organization. “I am eager to spread the word on all the great aspects of the Club and continue to build our programs and memberships. I am so happy to bring my energy to a place where a difference can really be made. Having worked for the club in the past, I

Pink Elk 5K Run/Walk on April 19 The 3rd Annual Pink Elk 5K Run/ Walk will be held on Sunday, April 19, at 11:00 am at Vestal Elks Lodge 2508. Proceeds from this year’s event will benefit Traci’s Hope and the Vestal Elks Lodge Veterans’ Committee. Record Year for Food Bank The Food Bank of the Southern Tier announced that 2014 was a record setting year for the organization’s hunger relief efforts in the region. For the first time in the Food Bank’s 34-year history, over 10 million pounds of food were distributed to neighbors in need by the Food Bank and its network of partner agencies including Broome County based affiliate CHOW. The Food Bank’s ability to increase distribution is a credit to a new, larger facility opened in 2011, the expansion of its volunteer program, significant growth in direct service programs including the BackPack Program™ and Mobile Food Pantry, as well as a partnership formed in 2012 with CHOW to better serve the highest need County in the Food Bank’s service area. “Before moving into this facility, we never would have been able to distribute anywhere near 10 million pounds of food,” said Natasha Thompson, President and CEO of the Food Bank of the Southern Tier. “It’s an amazing milestone that we could not have reached without the support of so many
including our volunteers, donors, and especially our partner agencies who work on the front lines to distribute this food to our neighbors in need.” While this record is an important milestone, the Food Bank is already looking ahead at ways to more effectively address the sobering need of one in four Southern Tier residents who receive assistance from the Food Bank each year. The number of MFP distributions serving seniors will more than double this year to better reach a population that is often limited in access to traditional food pantries. The Apalachin Lions Club 28th Annual Scholarship program will award $3,000 in scholarships to deserving students from the class of 2015 who live in the 13732, and 13760, 18830 Zip Codes. “The Pajama Game” on stage at NV High School Newark Valley High School presents “The Pajama Game”, February 13 and 14, at 7:00 pm in the Jewel Griffith Auditorium at the Newark Valley High School, 68 Wilson Creek Road, Newark Valley. The Pajama Game is a musical written by George Abbott and based on the novel 7-1/2 Cents by Richard Bissell featuring a score by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross. The story deals with labor troubles in a pajama factory, where worker demands for a seven-and-a-half cent raise are going unheeded. In the midst of this ordeal, love blossoms
between Babe, the grievance committee head, and Sid, the new factory superintendent. For the past 21 years, the Food Bank has partnered with local grocery retailers to raise donations to help support hunger -relief efforts and increase awareness surrounding the issue of hunger in the Southern Tier. Now through March 1, donation coupons are conveniently located at participating store checkout registers for shoppers to make a donation of their choosing. Coupons are available in $2, $3, or $5 increments with barcodes that simply include the donation in the checkout total. On January 27, 4-H youth Zachary Moyer, 17 of Binghamton, made a generous donation of $100 to the Cutler Botanic Garden. Zach continuously runs bottle and can drives and donates his proceeds to charities and causes he believes strongly in, such as past donations to support his 4-H club. Zach has been involved in 4-H for ten years and is a member of the Green Team 4-H Club, which focuses on horticulture and gardening with a strong emphasis on community service. The Art of Quilting Exhibit in Owego An exhibit called "The Art of Quilting" will be on display February 6 27, at the Tioga Arts Council's gallery at 179 Front Street in Owego. Santa’s Special Delivery Imagine the joy on a child’s face when they opened their front door only to be greeted by that iconic jolly man in a red suit who pays children a visit every December. Several children in Tioga County got to experience that excitement on December 22, 2014, when Santa made a special delivery to their foster homes. Thanks to the continued generosity of the Tioga County community several children in foster care were delighted when Santa came and helped them open their gifts. Santa also provided each child with their first gift of Christmas, a single silver bell to hang on their tree. The Tioga County Foster Care program would like to thank the Lounsberry United Methodist Church
and the East Berkshire United Methodist Church for providing gifts to the children who are currently in foster care. Rochester Diocese Offers “No News” about Owego’s St. Patrick School
Rumors have been circulating concerning the status of St. Patrick School in Owego. When this newspaper contacted Doug Mandelaro, Director, Office of Stewardship & Communications for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rochester, Mr. Madelaro sent the following statement via email: “As no decision has been made as yet regarding the school, there is no news release at this point in time.
School and parish leaders are working with the Catholic Schools Office and the Bishop's Office to analyze the situation carefully before making any decision about St. Patrick School going forward. No deadline has been set regarding such a determination. We will let you know when there is a news release.” We hope this is a case of “no news is good news”!

Players will be broken up into age groups VP Teener Baseball Jim Lavo urges parents and coaches to observe what and how the players are being instructed. Teaching the players are experienced OFA coaches and players. Parent observation is very important to learn tips on how to help their child. New and experienced coaches learn valuable techniques on how to instruct a team. Volunteer Opportunities Registration is a time for parents to indicate their willingness to help umpire, manage, coach, work in concession stand, do field work, carpentry, plumbing, computers etc. New volunteers are always needed for the OLL family. Waverly Middle School YES! Leaders Prepare to show younger students how to make safe choices
YES! LEADers from Waverly Middle School attended a special training aimed at building the skills they'll use to talk to elementary students about the dangers of drugs and alcohol later in the school year.
Nineteen students from Waverly Middle School completed their training to become YES! LEADers. YES! LEADers are high school and middle school students who teach elementary school students about skills they need to resist drugs and alcohol, the importance of positive self-esteem in making safe choices and effectively handling peer pressure. The YES! Launch training program teaches YES! LEADers how to be role models for younger students through different team activities and educational sessions. Trained YES! LEADers are substance-free role models for younger students, who use their leadership skills
to develop resistance skills in elementary school children through interactive activities and age appropriate entertainment. Following a year’s hiatus, the YES! LEADS program returned to Waverly School district under the guidance of new advisor Karin Mann. “Our first year as a middle school group has been phenomenal. The kids are excited to be a part of this initiative and to give back to our community,” Mann said. “I’ve loved working with this group of students. They’re looking forward to presenting to the elementary classrooms.” Waverly Middle School’s YES! LEADers are committed to helping their community throughout the year. In the fall, they hosted a free family movie night for the community, and will sponsor a middle school dance in February. In the spring, they’ll visit elementary classrooms for their unique, hands-on presentations. YES! Sauerbrey to Attend Statewide Seminar
Martha Sauerbrey, Chair of the Tioga County Legislature will meet with hundreds of county colleagues from across the state in Albany the first week in February as part of the New York State Association of Counties' (NYSAC) Legislative Conference. County officials will discuss state and local fiscal concerns, new mandate relief proposals, the State budget, and programs designed to save money for counties and their taxpayers. “The NYSAC Conference is an excellent opportunity to gain helpful information and learn what other counties are doing to face the challenges of our communities. We also learn new ideas and gain knowledge from the valuable programs they present” said Martha Sauerbrey. County officials from all areas of the state will attend the Legislative Conference. "County leaders recognize that by coming together on the issues that impact all counties, we can accomplish more than we can working
alone. Our partners at the State level need to address several crucial issues, and county officials are ready to work with them. Local officials attend this conference to learn as well as to roll up their sleeves and look at the solutions to the challenges we all face," said Stephen Acquario, NYSAC Executive Director. Dozens of workshops will cover a range of issues, including the impact of the proposed State budget on counties, financing 9-1-1, transportation infrastructure, mental health, juvenile justice, emergency management, renewable energy, ethics, agriculture, and economic development. The State Association of Counties is a bipartisan municipal association serving all 62 counties of New York State including the City of New York. Organized in 1925, NYSAC's mission is to represent, educate and advocate for member counties and the thousands of elected and appointed county officials who serve the public.
