OFD Holds Open House The Owego Fire Department (OFD) held an Open House on March 2 at the Central Fire Station on North Avenue in Owego so the public could view the current condition of the station and the need for funding from the Village of Owego

Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) for critical repairs. The Owego Central Fire Station which was built in 1911, is one of the most valuable and important buildings in the Village Historic District. The station was last restored in the early 1990s, and is now in need of repair. Critical repairs include clock tower work (pictured), masonry work including repointing and repainting the station’s exterior, and roof replacement. Other necessary work includes interior repairs, basement flood proofing, handicapped accessibility improvements, and a new sign with repaving of the parking lot. OFD through the Village of Owego has requested $400,000 of DRI funds to work on these needed repairs. The Village of Owego Board unanimously endorsed the project at their December 17, 2018, board meeting.

Tioga County Job Fair - March 6 The Tioga County Business Services Team will host the 5th Annual Tioga County Job Fair on Wednesday, March 6, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at the Owego Treadway Conference Center on 1100 Rt. 17C in Owego. There are 100 employers participating in this year’s event, and all of these employers will have open jobs that they are hoping to fill. Employment opportunities will include entry level to professional positions, and will cover a broad spectrum of occupations. Many employers today use online applications to locate potential candidates for job opportunities, making it difficult for job seekers to connect personally with employers. This event provides an excellent opportunity for job seekers to meet and network with employer representatives in person.

Job seekers will receive a packet at the job fair registration desk on March 6 with a list of employers, table number, and jobs available with that employer. Any job seekers wanting more information on jobs available can stop in to their local Workforce office. The Tioga Career Center is located at 1062 Route 38, Owego. Tioga Career Center staff can be reached at 6878483. The list of employers can be found on the Tioga Career Center Facebook page. Like and follow the Tioga Career Center to receive weekly updates on participating employers. Job seekers can also access the NYS Dept. of Labor Job Bank website at newyork.usnlx.com to view current open positions, or can visit individual employer websites to view their job postings.

Ribbon Cutting for New Tioga County Visitor Center

The Tioga County Tourism Office held a ribbon cutting ceremony and an open house on Friday, March 1, for the new Tioga County Visitor Center at The Gateway Building, 200-204 Front Street in Owego. The Tioga County Visitor Center (TCVC) is located at the back of the first floor of the building, overlooking a large deck, the Owego Riverwalk, and the Susquehanna River. “It’s a beautiful space. We are excited for the warmer months so visitors can really enjoy the deck and the gorgeous river views,” said Loreen Maley, Assistant Director, Tioga County Tourism. The TCVC will have tourism information on Tioga County, the Finger Lakes Region, and New York State and will provide oneon-one assistance with travel in the region during open hours. “We are excited to be in a high-traffic area of the village and hope to be able to interact with more visitors and

tell them about all of the fun things to do in the county and the region,” said Rebecca Maffei, Director, Tioga County Tourism. “In the near future, we hope to have digital displays to promote our events, advertising displays for tourism businesses, and to be an exhibit space for Tioga County artists,” she said. “We welcome everyone to come and see the new Tioga County Visitor Center. It’s really an incredible space,” said Maffei.
