Owego Hose Team to Host Trout Derby On April 3 Contest scheduled for April 3 8 am - 6 pm with Chicken BBQ Owego Hose Teams, Inc. in partnership with Tioga County Anglers and Hook, Line & Sinners will host its 2nd Annual Trout Derby Saturday, April 3rd. The contest for anglers of all ages will be held virtually or by checking fish in at Croton Hose Co. #3 Fire Station on Talcott Street. Registration forms for the Trout Derby are available at the Community Shop, Scott Smith & Son, Hook Line & Sinner, and Weaver Automotive and online registration is available at the hose team website at www.OwegoHoseTeams.com. The registration deadline with $10 fee is Friday, April 2, and you must be registered to participate. Once registered you will be provided a unique number identifier by the hose team. Fishing is limited to both the EAST and WEST branches of the Owego Creek. All registrants must have a valid New York State fishing license and abide by all New York State Department of Conservation (DEC) rules and regulations. Fly, spin, and bait fishing permitted. Winners will be announced shortly after 6:00 pm on Saturday, April 3, at Company #3’s Fire Station and via Facebook Live. Fifty percent payout from registration
fees will be awarded for largest brook and brown trout (length) or $100 in each category whichever dollar amount is largest. The $10 entry fee covers both the brook and brown trout categories. Contestants participating virtually are asked to post pictures of their trout caught to the hose team Facebook page @owegohoseteams or email to owegohoseteams@gmail.com showing the trout with measuring device indicating the trout’s length and your unique number identifier. A chicken BBQ will be held in conjunction with the Trout Derby but sold separately. Pre-order your chicken dinners on the hose team website, emailing the hose team, or by calling (202) 4949108. A portion of proceeds will benefit Tioga County Anglers a new not for profit seeking to improve Tioga County’s cold-water fisheries. Local bait and tackle shop Hook, Line, & Sinners will be at Company #3’s Station throughout the tournament providing all your fishing needs. Company #3’s hospitality room will also be open with their famous clam chowder free of charge for all anglers. All participants are urged to follow the New York State on Pause guidelines to include but not limited to social distancing and avoiding contact with other people while fishing.
Roberts Announces Candidacy for Town of Owego Highway Supervisor
Mike Roberts of Apalachin has announced his candidacy for Town of Owego Highway Supervisor. Mike is currently a Tioga County Legislator for District 3. He has been elected to this position for 16 years. Mike is the chair of the public works committee for the county and co-chair for the BMTS regional traffic committee. He is a member of the county budget committee. A member of the Tioga County Republican Committee.
Mike is familiar with all aspects of road repair including the procurement process. As a successful business owner for 24 years here in our community, Apalachin Auto and Truck Repair, he is proficient in all heavy-duty truck and equipment repair. He is a heavy-duty equipment operator and owner. Mike is also a Master Mechanic. “I have sold my business and chosen not to seek re-election as County Legislator, so I can be devoted full time to the Highway Supervisor position. I chose to run for this position because I have the qualifications and the knowledge to be an effective Highway Supervisor for the Town of Owego. As supervisor I will attend the Town Board Meetings and will return all calls from residents. I will look at each situation, use common sense and experience to solve problems. I will retrofit highway trucks with GPS to allow for precise delivery of services as events unfold. I will focus on drainage and infrastructure maintenance. I humbly ask for your support to take the Highway Department in a new direction of fiscal responsibility, professionalism and service.” Primary is June 22. Weaver Announces Run for Town of Owego Highway Superintendent
Small business owner Jason Weaver announced his candidacy for Town of Owego Highway Superintendent on February 17 at his automotive repair shop, 191 North Avenue in Owego. “As a small business owner, I understand how to do more with less and make a dollar go further,” said candidate Weaver, a Republican from the Village of Owego. “In these tough economic times, we need to be looking out for the taxpayer’s hard-earned dollars.” Weaver owns and operates Weaver Automotive on North Avenue in Owego, a business he has run for the past 18 years. If elected, Weaver plans to hire a general manager to run his business so he can be a fulltime highway superinten-
dent. A volunteer with the Owego Fire Department’s (OFD) Croton Hose Company #3, Weaver currently serves as Captain of OFD’s largest fire company. His service to the Owego community also extends to Owego Little League and Owego Junior Football League where he coaches area youth. He lives with wife Laura and three children on the Flats in the Village of Owego. The Class of 1991 Tioga graduate wants to bring transparency and accountability to the job. Weaver notes that the Town of Owego has 374 “lane miles” of roads that need to be maintained with clear plans for upkeep and replacement; snow removal should be a top priority in winter months with attention to the various snow plow routes; communication lines need to be open and transparent with taxpayers and the town board; highway department employees should be provided with the tools they need to get the job done; and the need to work within budget constraints especially during the COVID-19 crisis. The Town of Highway Superintendent job will be open as current Superintendent Mark Clark is retiring. Weaver is running as a Republican in the June 22nd primary. He will be circulating petitions for ballot status February 24 to March 15.

The Fannie C. Hyde Charitable Trust awarded $8,498 to the Tioga Arts Council (TAC) for the creation of a Children’s Gallery Space and Zine Library in the rear portion of its building at 179 Front Street in downtown Owego. Renovations will support the creation of two new spaces, a Children’s Gallery and a Zine Library. Children’s Gallery Space The Children’s Gallery Space will be created by installing and painting new display walls, as well as by purchasing new lighting and hanging systems in the space that leads from TAC’s current office to the rear entrance of the building. In this space, children of all ages will be able to display artwork, learn how to create a solo or group art show, and create small works with art supplies provided by TAC. Zine Library TAC also has a collection of zines (also known as homemade magazines, chapbooks, or pamphlets). With this support, TAC will establish a space to showcase its zine library and encourage zine creation. Once the challenges of COVID-19 begin to subside, this space will also serve as a mixed-use area, where small groups – like Zine or Book Clubs, Knitting Groups, Computer Classes, etc. – can meet and make connections around common interests. Scope of Work In December 2020 and January 2021, volunteers began to clean out the space and prepare for demolition. An additional $1,000’s worth of work was donated by the following volunteers and TAC Board of Directors members: T. Looking Ahead Once complete, TAC will host a Ribbon Cutting for the Children’s Gallery and Zine Library, facilitate a Zine Swap to build its collection, and organize other youth arts-related activities. TAC will consider reconfiguring its office space and possibly adding a retail space in 2021. Long-term, TAC will continue to seek funds to support building renovations as part of its Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) match commitment. All renovation projects will aim to: Preserve as well as enhance the historic building Maximize the space to better serve the community and advance TAC’s mission Inspire and support a vibrant, creative community in and around Tioga County While renovations are underway in February, TAC will not have an exhibition in its gallery and office hours will be limited. A Tioga Hills Elementary student who is changing the world one kindness at a time caught the attention of Senator Fred Akshar and his Akshar’s All-Stars program. Ben Cucci, a fifthgrader from Apalachin, was recently selected as an Akshar All-Star, and received a T-shirt and framed certificate from the Senator. Ben is the founder of Nathan’s Butterflies, a nonprofit that pays it forward with random acts of kindness in the community. “I wanted to do something to help remember Nathan,” said Ben, who was only six years old when he lost his little brother, Nathan. “I came up with random acts of kindness, and it kept getting bigger.” Ben and his “Butterfly Crew” have helped provide school supplies, set up a “Little Free Library” in the school’s butterfly garden, provided face masks and hand sanitizer for 55 boxes filled as part of his 5th Grade’s annual Com-
munity Box Project to benefit patrons of the Apalachin Food Pantry, supported local food drives, and much more. As an extra incentive, both organizations would award 21 Apple iPads to those who displayed outstanding acts for their community. Forty-one youths entered the contest. Organizers from both organizations were so impressed with all of the youth’s great works in their communities, that they decided to award twenty $25 Walmart gift cards to those youths who entered but didn’t win. “It’s im-
portant to us that we recognize and reward these kids for going out of their way to try to make a positive impact in their community,” stated one of the organizers. The award ceremony was held at the Vestal Elks Lodge. John Pooler, Elks Lodge Exaulted Ruler; Scott Pauley, COPS 4 A CAUSE President; and Senator Fred Akshar handed out the iPads to the winners. One of the youths cried as she accepted her iPad. “I can’t believe I won,” she said over and over again. The youths and their families were also treated to pizza, wings, cookies, candy, and music. Both the Vestal Elks Lodge and COPS 4 A CAUSE are organizations that give back to the community in which they live.
Local Author’s Newest Book “13 Ways to Eat a Fly” Local author Sue Heavenrich’s newest children’s book, 13 Ways to Eat a Fly may sound like a recipe book, but it’s not. This reverse counting book is all about subtraction, as flies meet their demise. The unfortunate insects are zapped, wrapped, and otherwise trapped. It may be gross, but the science is real. Artwork by David Clark combines the gruesome reality of predator/prey relationship with a comic touch. The idea for the book came about by accident. “I was in a hurry and misread a book title on the shelf,” Sue said. “I thought it said “how to eat a fly” so I jotted that down.” Later, she got to wondering just how does one eat a fly? Being a biologist, she dug into research. “I made a list of all the animals – birds, fish, insects, amphibians – that eat flies.” She made another list of flies: crane flies, long-legged flies, mosquitoes, cluster flies – so many kinds! Then she began pairing flies with the animals – and plants – that ate them. Then she added some special-interest features for the back of the book. “I’d been listening to a radio program about local food, and how people would ask their waiter where their chicken was raised. So I wrote a tongue-in-cheek guide to eating bugs, complete with nutritional information for a single serving

After earning her master’s degree in biology and teaching highschool science, Sue began writing about science and nature in magazines, newspapers, and blogs. President Nixon announces the engagement of his daughter Tricia to Edward Cox. Thomas E. Dewey, former NYS Governor and twice GOP nominee for President (1944 & 1948), dies at age 68. Lt. William Calley is sentenced to life at hard labor for his role in the Mylai massacre. At the 11th Annual International Broadcasting Awards for best TV and radio commercials, Alka Seltzer’s “Mama Mia, That’s Some Spicy Meatball” commercial wins in the TV category. IBM announces production of its Model 135 computer, the lowest cost system in its 370 line. Gymnast Cathy Rigby performs at the Owego Free Academy with the Southern California Acro Team.
A Meals on Wheels route is established in Tioga County. Meals are picked up at the Endicott Baptist Church and brought to the Owego area. The cost of a meal is $2.50 and consists of a hot lunch and a cold supper. The OFA Drama Club presents “Up the Down Staircase.” Fire destroys the 177-year-old Canandaigua Hotel. Movies playing in local theaters include “The Lion in Winter,” “Cold Turkey,” “Song of Norway,” and “101 Dalmatians.” Top tunes include “Me and Bobby McGee” by Janis Joplin, “She’s a Lady” by Tom Jones, “One Bad Apple” by the Osmonds, and “For All We Know” by The Carpenters.
