A “Crazy Quilt Sampler” Workshop will be held on Saturday, April 13, and Sunday, April 14, from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm at the Bement Billings Farmstead in Newark Valley. Artist Mercia Stocking will teach the workshop. Participants will see examples, learn history, and create a 6-inch square table mat. Cotton pieces or scraps will be pieced together, then embellished and trim applied. Students will practice embroidery stitches for the decorative seams, and finish with a backer and edging. Cotton is best choice for this project because it is a user-friendly fabric. Although velvets and satins are also often seen in crazy quilts, those fabric can be difficult to work with. Cotton will assist

students to hold irregular shaped scraps together as they work. Cost is $30 for members of the Newark Valley Historical Society, or $35 for nonmembers. Scholarships are available. The museum is at 9241 State Route 38 in Newark Valley. To register, call Leslie at (607) 427-8373 by April 3. This program is made possible in part with public funds provided by N.Y. The hose team is adding a feature - a brick walk around the fountain with four 1,000-pound stone benches so visitors may sit and enjoy the fountain. The memorial walkway and brick walk around concept are modeled after the Walk of Honor at the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial in Emmitsburg, Maryland. The same type of brick used at the Emmitsburg Memorial from Glen Gery Bricks is being used in Owego. The hose team anticipates the project’s completion in early summer barring any unforeseen issues. Work on the Baker Fireman’s Fountain site in Owego’s courthouse square will resume in early April weather permitting according to officials with the Owego Hose Team. The 104-year-old fountain is currently undergoing restoration at Robinson Iron in Alexander City, Alabama. Robinson Iron estimates the work on the fountain is more than 50% complete at this time. The zinc fireman statue cradling a baby has been repaired and repainted its existing colors with white trousers, blue coat, and black fire helmet. The base of the fountain including the fountain pool walls, pedestal stem, and upper bowl are returning to the fountain’s original dark green color. The hose team chose “Charleston Green” which is a paint that works well with cast iron and will accentuate the fireman’s colors. Erected in 1914, the fireman and baby were originally bronze in color with the dark green fountain base (see photo bottom right). In 1953, local painter and World War I veteran Harry McCoy repainted the fireman with blue trousers, white coat, and red helmet in preparation for the Central New York Firemen’s Convention held in Owego that year. The fireman was later repainted his current colors in the 1960s. Excavation work will take place in April and the pouring of the fountain base soon after. A new water line and electric will be supplied to the site for a new pump and lights that will illuminate the fountain at night. The Owego Jayncees had floodlights installed at the fountain site in 1954 and the lights will once again return this year. Once the base is poured the restored fountain will return and be installed by Robinson Iron. Other components of the project include a memorial walkway leading to the fountain from Main Street; a stamped concrete Maltese Cross surrounding the fountain honoring Owego’s five fallen

nial dinner, rededication ceremony, g r an d firemen’s parade and hose race to be a n nounced in the near future. For information about the project’s status, visit the h o s e t e a m website or Facebook page owegohoseteams.

Just before 2300 hours (11:00 pm) on Sunday the 24th of March, Campville Fire was alerted to “Stand-By” in quarters for the Apalachin Fire Department as they responded to a possible structure fire on Marshland Road. State Police arrived on the scene prior to the FD arrival and reported the fire was through the roof on a two story, single family home. Apalachin upgraded the call to Campville requesting an apparatus and manpower from Station 1 and a Tanker from Station 3 to respond. Also toned out in the initial request for mutual aid were Owego and Southside. The weather was warmer than our experiences of the prior months and remained just above freezing for the evening. There was a slight wind, the skies were partly cloudy and the ground was free of snow and ice. The main body of the house was involved on the first and second floors along with the attic space. The attached garage was not involved. The fire attack was multipronged with a 1¾ inch line to the exterior roof over the garage and directed into the second floor. A 2½ inch line was employed at the front of the house from the yard, and a third line was deployed to the opposite end and rear. The fire was well entrenched into the walls and with the exterior constructed of brick facade for the 1st story, the fire was shielded from water flow. This ne-

cessitated removing the bricks which quickly aided reaching the flames. With the heavy use of water and engines pumping from portable collapsible tanks a tanker shuttle was required to provide for the flow. As many as 7 tankers were employed at the height of the fire with a combined capacity over 15,000 gallons and it was estimated over 50,000 gallons were required to extinguish the blaze. The tankers were from Apalachin, Campville, Owego, Southside (2), Vestal and Union Center. They shuttled about mile to a hydrant manned by a water fill team. Approximately 50 firefighters were involved with several mixed crews composed from the different departments. Over 17 pieces of apparatus were involved during the night. There were no firefighter injuries and we all went home safe. Campville was back in service at about 0200 hours while Apalachin was committed for several hours more. The coordination of all this was successful and well executed which in a large part is due to the constant training conducted locally and through the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control. These efficient, complex events reflect the ongoing commitment of all the departments. Good job! It is always an honor to work with all of you. Captain Dinosaur
