On Memorial Day, we remember and honor those who died while serving in the United States Armed forces. On this year’s Memorial Day, Monday, May 25, there will be no parade in downtown Owego due to the COVID-10 pandemic. The Remembrance Services for Tioga County Veterans, and the Roll Call of Honor will be broadcast on WEBO radio. The roll call honors deceased veterans buried in Tioga County cemeteries. On Memorial Day morning, remember to tune into Owego’s WEBO AM 1330 or FM 98.5, 101.3, 105.1 or 101.7

NASA astronaut Doug Hurley, former Apalachin resident and graduate of Owego Free Academeny class of 1984, returned to his high school alma mater on November 20, 2009, to present the school with the OFA T-shirt that flew with him to the International Space Station that summer. After the assembly, students talked with Doug.
Owego’s 40th Anniversary Strawberry Festival, which was scheduled for June 19 and 20, has been postponed until next year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Historic Owego Marketplace (HOM), which sponors the festival, postponed the event because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and the unlikelihood of being able to gather the required permits. Organizers are not confident that holding such a large event at this time would be safe for the community, even if restrictions were lifted in some fashion. “The safety of the community is at the forefront of our decision,” said Pat Hansen, chair of the annual event. The 5K and Annual Kids’ Fun Run are cancelled and will be rescheduled for next year as well. The organizers are appreciative of those that provided sponsorship for this year’s event, and the entertainers that
stepped up to be available for the festival. “We will certainly be reaching out to our entertainers when it is time to reschedule,” said Wendy Post, co-chair to the festival along with Hansen. “We appreciate everyone’s support, and look forward to hosting the 40th Anniversary event next year.” In the meantime, the Historic Owego Marketplace President, Bradley Crews, will be working to support area merchants that have been affected tremendously by the pandemic. “The mission of The Historic Owego Marketplace is to maintain the Village of Owego as a vital, thriving retail and cultural center and we look forward to carrying on the tradition of our local events and merchant support when it is prudent to do so”, said Crews, “In the meantime we will be working to help our merchants and the marketplace as a whole throughout this pandemic.”
