Three Girl Scouts from Apalachin were among the 31 council-wide that earned the Girl Scout Gold Award this year, the highest award a Girl Scout can earn. The Girl Scouts from Apalachin are Ashley Bender, Kelly Decker, and Marisa Kreidler of Apalachin. They and the other Girl Scouts were recognized at a Young Women of Distinction reception last month for their accomplishment. A special luncheon was held at Onondaga Community College in Syracuse. OCC President Casey Crabill, Ed.D. was the keynote speaker. To earn the prestigious Girl Scout Gold Award, girls must complete Girl Scout Senior or Ambassador Journeys, the essence of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, and demonstrate their leadership abilities by spending at least 80 hours working on a Gold Award Take Action project that creates a sustainable impact on their extended communities.

the Vestal United Methodist Church. By organizing years of data and creating these documents for the church website, youth members will be able to more readily have the information they need for scholarship applications. Through her church she also organized Chow Food Drives. Kelly Decker is a junior at Vestal High School. For her project she worked with the Discovery Center’s Story Garden where she addressed the need to make the book nook more child and staff friendly. She developed a method that was fun and educational by color and number coding the book nooks so the children (ages 4-7) could easily find a book and replace it properly by following her system that she created into a game.

WEBO Adds Coverage on 105.1 FM WEBO Radio has added FM coverage of local news, weather, and sports in Waverly. The new station can be heard in Waverly, Barton, Smithboro, Sayre, South Waverly, Athens, and Chemung at 105.1 FM. The signal is a direct simulcast of News Radio WEBO, which can also be heard on 101.3 FM, 107.9 FM and 1330 AM. “WEBO has a rich tradition of serving Tioga County, since 1957, with local news and information, including local high school sports” according to Dave Radigan, the station’s owner and morning show host. The station enjoyed great success throughout the 1960’s, 70’s, and 80’s before falling into a state of disrepair. The Radigan family purchased the station and its assets in 2006. That purchase began a renewed community interest in hometown radio, and a complete rebuild of the station’s primary signal 1330 AM. “The construction involved replacing everything from microphone to tower, and everything in between,” said

Radigan. “We also re-focused the station’s priorities on local programming and information.” Since 2006, News Radio WEBO has also added 107.9 FM that serves the Owego and Binghamton areas. Last December, 101.3 FM was built in Candor and serves northern Tioga County. “Our ultimate goal is to link the communities in and around Tioga County,” Radigan said. “Adding these three FM signals will provide greater coverage of local community events, and is a valuable asset to the community.” In addition to signing on 105.1 FM in the Valley area, News Radio WEBO is in the process of opening a new programming and marketing office at 358 Broad Street in Waverly. This office will provide WEBO with the opportunity to hire local news reporters and marketing specialists to help incorporate the Valley area and business community into WEBO’s daily programming. “We are very happy to also be in the Waverly/Sayre area,” Radigan said.

Two Rivers State Park in Waverly The Two Rivers State Park at Waverly will see some activity soon according to New York State Park Director Fred Bonn. Mr. Bonn indicated that State staff personnel will occupy a residence on the property once the renovation work to the house is completed. “We had anticipated the renovation work to be wrapped up by spring so our staff person could be in place by May. However, due to some unforeseen issues with the structure, it now looks like it will be July or August before she will be living here.” Tioga County Legislator Ray Case commented, “I think it will be a real

boost to the Waverly area to have a State Park Representative living in our community. It is our hope that by having staff here we will see an increased awareness and use of the park.” Many Valley residents use the trails at the park already. Director Bonn stated that summer college interns have been hired to work on better signage and to make improvements to the trail system. “Once the renovation work is completed and the State park staff is in place, we will be introducing her around the community,” Legislator Case stated. “We are looking forward to the next step toward putting Two Rivers State Park on the map.”

Champion Speedway Celebrates 40th Anniversary

Champion Speedway in Owego kicked off its 40th anniversary season on May 25 with a full program of insane Speedway Motorcycle and ATV Racing. Built in 1975, the little dirt oval off the side of Route 17/86 has hosted many memorable events in its history and is still going strong thanks to the efforts of owner Jason Bonsignore of Rochester. Bonsignore brought the track back from the dead in 1997 after four years of it sitting derelict, and has invested countless hours and dollars since keeping the facility going for the local community to enjoy. This will be Bonsignore's 17th year in

operation, which makes him the second longest running speedway promotion in US history, besides the Oxley Family of the World Famous, Costa Mesa Speedway in California. Many of the sport's most famous faces have raced at, or visited, the legendary local track, including World Individual Champions Ivan Mauger, Bruce Penhall, Sam Ermolenko, Billy Hamill and Greg Hancock. This season is set to be no different as both Ermolenko and Hamill have expressed an interest in competing at the venue amongst other notable international names.

June 30 is the deadline to pre-register for the New York State FFA Tractor Driving Safety Contest at the 2014 Empire Farm Days at Rodman Lott & Son Farms in Seneca Falls, NY. The competition for students aged 14 to 18 will be held Thursday, August 7, at the Northeast’s largest outdoor agricultural trade show. The Junior division of the contest is open to 14-16 year olds; the Senior division is for 16-18 year olds. The Senior Division winner goes on to compete at the Big E Exposition in Springfield, MA, in September. Preparing for the annual competition teaches students the importance of learning and using safe farm equipment operating skills. Students complete a written safety exam, a parts identification task, and driving courses with 2-wheel and 4-wheel wagons. “This competition helps students test how well they have learned safe tractor operation and driving skills. A strong performance at Empire Farm Days is something they can add to their resumes in pursuit of an agricultural career,” says

New York State FFA Tractor Driving Safety Contest Coordinator Jon Clayson. To pre-register, contestants may submit their name and age division to Clayson by June 30, 2014, at JClayson@pioneercsd.org. Walk-up registrations will be accepted the day of the contest. Contest sponsors include John Deere, Kubota, H&S Farm Equipment, New Holland Case International, the New York Center for Agricultural Medicine and Health, Massey Ferguson, Java Farm Supply, Lamb and Webster, American Equipment and Kioti. The competition begins at 9:30am at the Empire Farms Days event that covers 300 acres with 600-plus representatives of agricultural institutions and organizations; farm equipment and ATV test driving opportunities; DairyProfit, equine and crops seminars; farm safety, live animal and agricultural plastics recycling demonstrations; and farm family life displays. Crawford Farms has also been a major sponsor at the two Upstate New York tracks owned by Jeff Gural, Tioga Downs and Vernon Downs, for several seasons. “Crawford Farms is very excited about the multiple sponsorships with Vernon Downs, Tioga Downs and the

Meadowlands including the Crawford Farms Trot and the Kindergarten Classic,” said Crawford Farms owner Michelle Crawford. “We feel strongly that more marketing dollars must be spent by all participants for our industry to grow and prosper. A television presence as well as any media production is what our industry needs to thrive. As a New York breeder we are in an industry that needs our support and we are happy to partner with Jeff Gural and his efforts.” Crawford Farms was the leading consignor at the 2013 Morrisville Yearling Sale and a major seller at both the Lexington and Harrisburg sales.
