A Victorian style earring workshop presented by beader SuZ McManums will be held on Saturday, July 27, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, at the Bement-Billings Farmstead Museum in Newark Valley. Participants use two-hole beads, a modern adaptation of a historic style. This is a modern translation created using modern innovations for the type of earrings worn by the Victorian ladies. These are not copies, but are impressions of the style using newer two-hole beads. Beading was a very serious subject to Victorian ladies who had the time to indulge in it themselves or the wherewith to hire a well known beader doing the work for something special. It might be a christening gown, a ball gown, a wedding gown, or mourning garments. Cost is $15 for members of Newark Valley Historical Society, $20 for non members. Scholarships are available. The Bement-Billings Farmstead Museum is at 9241 State Rt 38 in Newark Valley. To register for the workshop, call Leslie at (607) 427-8373 by July 17.

Owego Hose Teams, Inc, the not-forprofit organization spearheading the Baker Fireman’s Fountain restoration effort, has announced the schedule for
the fountain’s rededication this August on the fountain’s 105th birthday weekend. The public is cordially invited to all events the weekend of August 23 in Owego. In celebration of the fountain’s return, the hose team will host a gala dinner on Friday, August 23, at VFW Post #1371 on Main Street. Dinner includes an old-fashioned Italian menu catered by Mario’s Pizza with beer, wine, and soda. Commemorative items provided to each attendee include a stainlesssteel beer mug, wooden nickel, and memorial lanyard. Cocktail hour starts at 6:00 pm, with dinner and presentations at 7:00 pm. The Beatles Band will play from 9:00 pm to midnight. Tickets and registration for $25 are available on the hose team website: https:// www.owegohoseteams. com/dinner/ Rededication events are planned for Saturday, August 24, starting with a ceremony at the fountain site in the Court House Square at 9:00 am. A grand firefighter’s parade downtown is scheduled (permit pending) for 10:30 am. A firematic hose race will take place on lower Front Street starting at Noon. The day’s events conclude at the Rainbow Trail with music by The Gents starting at 5:00 pm. Work on the Baker Fireman’s Fountain site has continued with J.O.C. Construction, SDC Concrete, Roy Legurshy of Legursky & Sons, and members of the hose team prepping the site for the stamped Maltese Cross pour that will take place the week of July 8. Stamped concrete in the shape of a Maltese Cross, the worldwide symbol of the fire service, will surround the fountain honoring Owego’s five fallen firefighters. Hulslander Concrete anticipates their work on the stamped concrete to last a week. Following the concrete work, Good Earth Landscaping will be onsite completing the project brick work. A brick walk around will surround the fountain with four 1,000pound stone benches to be placed so visitors may sit and enjoy the fountain. A memorial modeled after the Walk of Honor at the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial in Emmitsburg, Maryland, will also be put down from Main Street to the fountain. The same brick type used at the Emmitsburg Memorial from Glen Gery Bricks is being used in Owego. More than 540 inscribed bricks have been sold for the memorial walkway. Brick sales will continue indefinitely. The hose team anticipates the project’s completion in late July barring any unforeseen issues. Project status information is available on the hose team website and Facebook page @owegohoseteams.

The Eagle has landed.” Armstrong becomes the first man to walk on the moon, and with his first step, he says “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” Armstrong spends 2 hours and 14 minutes on the moon’s surface, Aldrin spends 1 hour, 44 minutes. They gather soil and rock samples, and leave behind not only footprints, but the American flag, mementos of 5 fallen astronauts (3 Americans and 2 Russians), a seismometer (to measure moonquakes), a mir-
ror to reflect laser beams from Earth, a recording with messages from 76 of Earth’s leaders, and a plaque which reads “Here men from planet Earth first set foot upon the moon, July 1969 A.D. We came in peace for all mankind.” Russia’s unmanned space probe Luna 15 lands on the moon, about 500 miles from Apollo’s Tranquility Base. On July 21, Armstrong and Aldin take off from the moon in the lunar module, and connect with the command module in orbit around the moon. The Apollo 11 astronauts land in the Pacific Ocean after their 8-day voyage. Locally, the new expressway, Route 17, is open in Tioga County, but still under construction between Vestal and Johnson City. Commuter Airlines offers three round-trip flights per day between Binghamton and Washington. The Ti-Ahwaga Players begin casting for their autumn production of “The Music Man.” There is much local interest in the Apollo 11 mission, especially among employees of IBM-Owego. The computer in the instrument unit of the Saturn rocket that launched the Apollo 11 spacecraft was made at IBM Owego. Movies playing in local theaters include “The Love Bug,” “Goodbye, Columbus,” “The Graduate,” and “True Grit.” Tuesday night TV shows include “Star Trek,” “Get Smart,” and “The Ghost and Mrs. Muir.” Top tunes include “Good Morning Starshine” by Oliver, “Bad Moon Rising” by Creedence Clearwater Revival, and “In the Ghetto” by Elvis Presley. We’re reading “Portnoy’s Complaint by Phillip Roth, and “The Godfather” by Mario Puzo. In downtown Owego, we’re shopping at Cardone’s Men’s Clothing, Harvey’s Dress Shop, Riegel’s Pharmacy, Stack’s Fine Furniture, and McLean’s. And a quart of fresh picked local strawberries costs 69 cents.
