Hose Team Makes Progress on Steamer Project Barbershop demolition, fundraising, and steamer evaluation underway.

Owego Hose Teams, Inc. is off and running with its recently announced steamer restoration and “steamer house” project. On Tuesday, July 14, hose team and Owego Fire Department members demolished the former Lloyd’s Barbershop at 99 North Avenue in preparation for the steamer building. The property and building currently owned by Applied Technology Manufacturing (ATM) have been used in previous weeks for fire department trainings to include roof ventilation, forcible entry, and ladder operations. The demolition was a collaboration with Steve Lounsberry of ATM; Taylor Garbage Service who donated the dumpsters; Global Industrial Services Inc. who donated the use of their heavy equipment; NYSEG; Village of Owego DPW and Code Enforcement offices; and Ice Cream Works who provided volunteers with cold treats after the work was done. The Village of Owego Board has yet to give final approval for the steamer house plans. The proposal was originally presented to the board in January of this year. The topic is once again on the board’s agenda for their July 20th regular meeting where final approval is being requested. The “steamer house,” mod-

eled after one located in Marathon, NY, will showcase OFD’s 1866 Amoskeag Steam Pumper and 1939 Sanford Hose Truck. Constructed of cedar wood frame and glass solarium walls for 360 degree viewing with steeple supporting an antique fire bell, the building will be located next to Owego Fire Station #2 on North Ave. presenting historical, educational, and training opportunities. The project will also bolster the North Avenue corridor improving an abandoned property while bringing foot traffic and tourists to the business district. Scott Edsall of Williams and Edsall Land Surveyors and Roger Katchuk of First Tioga Realty donated their services as part of the overall project proposal. Hose team members also met with Andy Swift of Firefly Restorations and Brian Fanslau of Maine Locomotive & Machine Works this month who evaluated the steam pumper currently housed at Owego Central Fire Station. Swift and Fanslau stopped off in Owego en route back to the state of Maine after picking up restored steamer wheels for comedian Jay Leno’s 1901 self-propelled steam fire pumper in Amish country. A deal is hoped to be reached for steamer’s restoration that includes a new boiler, re-

Tioga To-Go

Tioga County Tourism and the Tioga County Chamber of Commerce are partnering together to bring you Tioga ToGo. Tioga To-Go is a promotional effort to encourage the public to patronize restaurants in Tioga County by ordering meals to-go. “We have seen an uptick is carryout and delivery at some restaurants around the county,” said, Rebecca Maffei, Director, Tioga County Tourism. “We hope that promoting to-go services will offset the decrease in revenue that

has resulted from the limits on seating capacity inside restaurants.” Restaurants that are interested in participating in Tioga To-Go, can contact Lori Maley at 687-7440 or info@experiencetioga.com. To participate, restaurants must submit a link or hard copy of their regular menu, a to-go menu, or to-go specials. These will be listed on the Tioga To-Go website. Restaurants have the option to donate gift certificates totaling a minimum of $30 of any denomination, and in turn the gift certificates will be used for weekly prizes on Tioga To-Go social media platforms and the restaurant donating them will be promoted. “We are excited to introduce Tioga To-Go for people who prefer take-out to dining in at this time. We are encouraging locals and visitors to try something new and support our local eateries while maintaining safety with Tioga To-Go options,” said Sally Yablonsky, Director of Operations, Tioga County Chamber of Commerce. Tioga To-Go will be running for the foreseeable future in Tioga County to encourage safety while driving business

paired lamps, pump work, and a new tiller pole allowing members to hand pull the steamer as it was originally designed. The total project cost of the steamer restoration and “steamer house” is expected to be in upwards of $100,000. An account at Neighborhood Redemption Center on 5th Avenue, Owego was recently set up to aid the project. Individuals can return their bottles and cans at the redemption center and apply their return funds to the Owego Hose Team account there. Proceeds benefit the steamer project. Hose team member Joe Ward recently donated 30 garbage bags

full of cans to the effort. Individuals can also contribute to the project by participating in the hose team’s “Steam Booster” donor program. For a $100 tax deductible contribution name(s) will be placed on a cast iron bronze plaque that will proudly hang on the steamer house building. Donors will receive a letter and certificate thanking them for their donation. Donors can also purchase benches that will surround the steamer house. Information on the “Steam Booster” and bench program is available at the hose team’s website at www. OwegoHoseTeams.com.

The Tioga County Historical Society, in partnership with Owego Hose Teams, Inc. and the Owego Fire Department (OFD), recently opened its area fire department exhibit on its main display floor featuring fire service artifacts and memorabilia from yesteryear. The display, which runs through October, was originally planned in concert with the Central New York Firemen’s Association (CNYFA) Annual Convention hosted by the hose team and OFD. The convention was postponed until July 2021 due to the COVID-19 crisis, but the society’s exhibit carries on. Several prominent OFD items highlight the collection including a chandelier and mirrors from Ahwaga Ladder Company #5. The brass chandelier from 1861 is made up of firefighters and ladders with #5 globes. Company #5’s tenfoot hook ladder, also known as a pompier ladder (from the French pompier meaning firefighter) is on display, too. This type of ladder can be attached to a windowsill or similar ledge by the use of a hooked extending bill with serrations on the underside. The hooked ladder then hangs suspended vertically down the face of the building. The ladder was developed to access buildings via enclosed alleys, lightwells and yards to which other types of ladder could not be taken. A pair of men and two ladders could be used to scale a building to considerable heights, by climbing from floor to floor and taking the ladders up behind and pitching to the next floor. Various fire helmets, helmet shields, trumpets, parade hats, water buckets, ribbons, fire service photos, badges, and equipment also are on display. This includes original meeting minutes from 1828-1835 from OFD’s founding to CNYFA convention booklets through the years. Other fire department memorabilia include a 1900 hose cart from the Waverly Pioneers Company #1 that was an apprentice fire company and a Newark Valley fire helmet and coat. Items from the Central New York Champion Owego Hose Team add historic uniforms, trophies, and equipment to round out the display. Of special importance in the collection are items that once belonged to one of Owego’s most famous firemen, Frank M. Baker. Baker, a former Owego Fire Chief in the late 1800s, was instrumental in organizing the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY), of

which he was secretary from 1874 to 1884, inclusive, and president in 1884 and 1885. He was president and founder of the Central New York Firemen’s Association (CNYFA) in 1893. A railroad man by trade, Baker had an extensive fire memorabilia collection now in procession by the society as he was well known in firefighter circles around the world. Baker donated both the Baker Fireman’s Fountain in the Courthouse Square as a memorial to his son, George Hobart Baker who also served as Owego Fire Chief and the clocktower atop Owego Central Fire Station to Owego Firefighters and the Village of Owego. Old Joe DeWitt’s, another famous Owego Firefighter, long firefighting career is documented in the display. DeWitt is often referred to as Owego’s longest serving fire chief and by the 1860s, he was the oldest active firefighter in New York State, begetting his moniker: “Old Joe.” The original fire alarm bell purchased by the village in 1867 located in the Courthouse Square was dedicated in “Old Joe’s” memory. At first, it was hung in a 44-foot wooden tower at the north end of the park to alert volunteer firefighters of an emergency. When the new courthouse was completed, it was put in the northeast tower, where it served for 48 years, and in 1915, it developed a crack. It was at first sold back to the bell company, but sentimental citizens started a movement to save “Old Joe. To save it, the committee sold shares of “Old Joe” stock at 25 cents each and collected enough money ($600) to buy it back from the bell company. It was set up on this pedestal on August 25, 1915 and formally dedicated as a memorial to DeWitt. The Tioga County Historical Museum, 110 Front St. in Owego is open Tues. through Sat., 10 am to 4 pm.

“Metro’s Restaurant Celebrates 70 Years” Iconic Owego restaurant continues to thrive Metro’s Restaurant on Route 96 in Owego recently celebrated its 70th anniversary. The iconic Owego restaurant known for its family style servings and famous pizza originally called “hot pies” opened its doors in 1950. The third-generation business was founded by Mary and Metro Sanyshyn and was the first business in the Owego area to serve pizza. The dish was then called “hot pies.” Now owned and operated by Debbie and Steve Sanyshyn and assisted by son Scott, Metro’s caters to new and longtime Owego natives looking for a good home cooked meal. Open Wednesdays through Sundays from 4:00 to 9:00 pm, the dinner crowds are often large with both table and bar seating. Takeout orders are also available. All soups and salad dressings are homemade along with the pizza dough. Haddock and scallops are family favorites on the weekends and Wednesdays feature the “Home Style Special” meals. Much of the restaurant is exact-

ly the same as when the restaurant doors first opened in 1950 including the dinner plates. “Not many places can claim they have 70-year-old dinner plates,” joked owner Steve Sanyshyn. The restaurant also offers a miniature golf course next door with its pink elephant that opened in 1993. Out of town guests often remark that no one goes hungry in Owego with so many fine dining establishments to choose from. For 70 years Metro’s Restaurant is one of the reasons why.
