154th Tioga County Fair - August 10 - 14
The Tioga County Fair will run Tuesday, August 10, through Saturday, August 14, with lots of exciting attractions on tap for the Biggest Event in Tioga County this year. Starting Tuesday night, August 10, the fully sanctioned Painted Pony Championship Rodeo thunders into town with competitors from all over the world. Come experience bull riding, barrel racing, calf roping, and more. Saturday’s, August 14, feature event is the Famous Outlaw Pulling series Tractor and Truck Pulls. Wednesday, August 11, and Friday, August 13, crowd favorites are the Demolition Derbies with multiple heats and Big Cash Prizes. Don’t miss the spectacular fireworks show on Thursday, August 12. Once again, the fair will host the Gillette family carnival. The Gillette family always brings spectacular rides and a fabulous mid-
way with games and lots of your favorite fair food. The Tioga County 4H Youth program is ready to show you what they have been up to all year. See them in the newly renovated agriculture barns. Plus a zoo, arts and crafts, local vendors and more. Best of all, with a special $10 daily admission, you can ride all the rides, see all the shows, and enjoy free parking, too. Tioga Downs Summer Concert Series Started with Blood, Sweat & Tears
Tioga Downs started their Summer Concert Series with Blood, Sweat & Tears on July 29. The second act in this series is Tanya Tucker on Friday August 20. Tucker is a country musician who had her first hit in 1972 when she was 13, and has continued to create hit after hit since then. Tickets are $20 and 100% of the sales will benefit the Southern Tier Veterans Support Group. Finishing up the summer concert is Cheap Trick on September 10, sponsored by Tioga State Bank. This Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame inductee has been making headlines since 1974 and plans to continue rocking
at Tioga Downs late summer. Tickets are $30 for general admission and $50 for reserved seats. Tanya Tucker and Cheap Trick tickets will be on sale at the Tioga Downs Casino Resort gift shop and online at ticketmaster.com. Tioga Downs, which opened in 2006, and expanded to Tioga Downs Casino Resort in December 2016, offers live harness racing, casino gaming, sports betting, dining, golf, indoor and outdoor live entertainment, and more. Applications Sought for Floyd Hooker Youth Fund The Community Foundation for the Twin Tiers (CFTT) is seeking applications for grants that will benefit the youth of Tioga County, New York. These grants will be awarded from the Floyd Hooker Youth Fund at the Community Foundation for the Twin Tiers. The 2021 amount available to grant is $21,650. This is open to governmental or non-profit organizations that benefit the youth of Tioga County, NY. Floyd Hooker was a resident of Owego who dedicated a portion of his estate to benefit the children and youth of Tioga County. The Tioga County Republican Committee held their annual dinner on July 24 at the Tioga Country Club in Nichols. Speakers at the dinner included local and state candidates. Senator Fred Akshar thanked everyone for their continued support over the past six years. He also introduced Mayor Rich David (Binghamton) who will be running for the 52nd District Senate seat in 2022. NYS Attorney General Candidate, Michael Henry (Queens) introduced himself to the attendees as well as NYS
Supreme Court Justices Elizabeth Aherne (Tompkins) and Patrick O’Sullivan (Madison). Joe Sempolinski, a candidate for Congress, also shared his views on local and national issues. A pre-dinner cocktail reception was held with Congresswoman Claudia Tenney. She updated attendees on national legislation and took questions. The keynote speaker was Congressman Lee Zeldin who shared his views on national and state issues. He laid out his vision to run for governor.

Chef Rob joins the Tioga Downs Casino Resort team with more than 20 years of experience in the culinary industry. Rob developed his love for cooking while employed at his first restaurant job at the Jamestown Settlement Café in Virginia. Following his new-found passion, he attended and graduated, summa cum laude, from Le Cordon Bleu Culinary College in Atlanta. Chamber of Commerce Announces 2022 Leadership Tioga Program The Tioga County Chamber of Commerce announced that the Leadership Tioga program is accepting applications for its class of 2022. “Leadership Tioga has had well over 300 graduates since the program started in 1998,” stated Sally Yablonsky, Interim Tioga County Chamber of Commerce President and CEO. “We are very eager to see what fresh perspectives the class of 2022 brings.” Leadership Tioga is committed to inspiring and connecting participants to services in the community by promoting personal growth, leadership development, networking, and skill building. The Leadership Tioga sessions are held at various locations throughout the county and will give participants the opportunity to learn more about what Tioga County has to offer. Dynamic speakers will discuss topics ranging from volunteerism, performance management, public safety, and human services, to name just a few. The Program offers one 2.5-hour morning class per month, beginning in January and ending in November. Tuition for the 11-month certification program is $300 if paid by 12/6/21 and $350 thereafter. The application deadline is December 31, 2021, and the first session will be held in January 2022. 30th Apalachin Lions “Back-to-School” Program The first day of school is a day of new experiences, new friends, and new clothes. Unfortunately, not all families are able to buy new clothing or school supplies for that all important opening day. The Apalachin Lions Club has been conducting a “Back to School” program for the last 30 years, this year with cooperation from the Binghamton Boscov’s. The program furnishes gift vouchers to eligible families, helping to defray some of the cost of getting their children

Brett A. King, of Vestal, passed away at his home on July 25, 2021
He was predeceased by his mother, Annette King. He is survived by his father, Donald King, daughters that he loved dearly, Lisa and Lori King, their mother, Kathleen, his brothers: Richard (Peg) King, DJ (Betsy) King, sisters: Dena (John) Beck, and Tracy (Eric) King. His Aunts and Uncles: Joe and Lynn Ciarlei and Dianne Ciarlei Grover as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, and his Black Lab, Skylar. He worked many years for the Town of Vestal Water Department. He was known for his meticulous mechanical and handyman skills and his love of the outdoors, spending time at his home in the country, hunting and the birds. He had a personality that stood out and loved to joke and bring laughter and fun to any situation. He was a just good hearted down to earth guy and was always willing to lend his expertise. We lost him way too soon. We hope you continue to send us your signature sign from above, until we meet again brother... A private burial will be held at the convenience of the family

Owego artist Chris Knickerbocker working in her studio Local artist Chris Knickerbocker will be at Riverow Bookshop in Owego on Friday, August 6, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm, to celebrate the publication of her artwork in the Fall 2021 issue of “Where Women Create.” Knickerbocker, owner of Old Souls Home - Reincarnated Art and Design, is known for using her imagination to meld together disparate cast-off objects into works that evoke nostalgic memories.
“Where Women Create,” a quarterly magazine featuring artisans from all over the world, will be available for purchase and signing during this First Friday Owego event. Also on hand will be local photographer Lindsay Ousterout, who provided many of the photographs for the magazine. Riverow Bookshop is at 187 Front Street in Owego.
New Exhibit at Tioga Arts Council
Susan Lee Camin’s solo exhibition “When Life Gives You Art” will open on Owego First Friday, August 6, from 11:00 am to 8:00 pm, at Tioga Arts Council (TAC), 179 Front Street in Owego. As a recently retired Owego Free Academy Art Teacher, Camin reflects back on a life filled with art and creativity: “My collection of work presented today is due to the allure of a constant drive to inspire students and myself, I have always loved to explore creative ideas and experience a wide variety of materials. Someone asked me what is your specialty, I happily said, ‘Anything
that inspires me, I love them all.’” The exhibition will open during Owego First Friday, but there will be no formal reception. The gallary space is small, so all visitors are required to wear masks and observe social distancing while in the gallery on opening night. After opening night, “When Life Gives You Art” will be on display at TAC from August 7 through August 28, Wednesdays through Sundays, from 12:00 Noon to 4:00 pm. Kiwanis Club of Owego Honors Owego Police Department The Kiwanis Club of Owego Foundation held its 26th Annual Golf Tournament at The Links at Hiawatha Landing on July 28. This tournament funds $4,000 in scholarships awarded by the Foundation to high school seniors in Owego and Candor each year. In a normal year, Owego Kiwanis would honor law enforcement officers during law enforcement week in May. This year in conjunction with the golf tournament they recognized the service
that Owego Police Department provides for residents of the Village of Owego. Owego Kiwanis specifically honored Officer Pike and his canine partner Maggie for all their efforts to deter criminal activities in the Village of Owego. A TV camera on the moon buggy gives us the first look at a launching from the moon. The draft lottery for the 1972 Selective Service of men turning 19 is held to determine who is first in line for callup. Princess Anne turns 21. Descendants of Dr. Samuel Mudd want a new trial to clear his name as an accessory after the fact in the assassination plot of Abraham Lincoln. Neil Armstrong, 41, the first man to walk on the moon, is quitting his $36,000 a year job as deputy associate administrator for aeronautics in the NASA Office of Advanced Research and Technology to become a full professor of engineering in Ohio.
