SEPTEMBER 2014
Nichols Old Home Day Parade Held on Labor Day
Number 9
Owego Police to Cut Coverage
Young and old came out to the 103rd Annual Old Home Day held in Nichols on Labor Day. The day began with a parade at 10:01 am through the village to Kirby Park, followed by events and entertainment at Kirby Park.
Due to being short staffed and not having officers to fill all three shifts the Village of Owego Police will cut the 11:00 pm to 7:00 am shift, the “A” line, starting this month for up to a year. According to Mayor Kevin Millar “The time to hire a new officer is two or three weeks before a Police Academy Class stars. It will be some time before we are up to full strength due to the board voting to
not hire to fill the three budgeted vacancies and send them to the Police Academy Class that started on August 18. The Police Academy is six months long so we will probably be short staffed for 6 to 12 months.” Any police matters during the hours of 11:00 pm to 7:00 am will be handled by the Tioga County Sheriffs Department or the New York State Police.
