Tioga Downs Presents More Than $100k to Veterans Support Group
Number 10
O Tannenbaum News
The 2016 O Tannenbaum display (above) with its “Christmas at the Circus” theme will get you in the mood for the upcoming 2019 O Tannenbaum Annual Holiday Display & Auction at the Tioga County Historical Society Museum in Owego. The patriotic message of Lee Greenwood’s iconic song “God Bless the USA,” has been taken to heart by the owner of Tioga Downs Casino Resort, Jeff Gural. As part of this year’s summer concert series, Tioga Downs donated its ticket sales from Lee Greenwood and Crystal Gayle’s performance held on August 8 to the Southern Tier Veterans Support Group. Ticket sales totaled $52,480, and Gural matched that sum, resulting in a
total of $104,960 donated to the organization. Jeff Gural presented the check to members of the Southern Tier Veterans Support Group on September 23. This year’s donation follows a long tradition, as Tioga Downs has been holding concerts to benefit the Southern Tier Veterans Support Group since 2011. For more information, visit www.tiogadowns.com.

Local Inn voted #2 Haunted Hotel in US
Fainting Goat Island Inn in Nichols has been voted the #2 Haunted Hotel in the United State by readers of USA Today’s 2019 10Best Readers’ Choice Travel Awards. Nominees for all categories were chosen by a panel of relevant experts and readers had three weeks to vote for their favorite haunted Hotel. Fainting Goat Island Inn, a five-room inn situated along the Susquehanna River, beat out some heavy hitters, such as Belhurst Castle in Geneva, NY, that has three hotels on its property, and the Bourbon Orleans Hotel in New Orleans’ French Quarter. The 10 Best Haunted Hotels are: 1. The Mizpah Hotel; 2. Fainting Goat Island Inn; 3. 1886 Crescent Hotel and Spa; 4. Bourbon Orleans Hotel; 5. The Myrtles Plantation; 6. Belhurst Castle; 7. Hotel Sorrento; 8. The Marshall House; 9. The Sagamore Resort; and
10. The Stanley Hotel. “It’s amazing to see our little inn recognized nationally and win second place against all of these other larger and wellknown hotels,” said Marnie Streit, owner of Fainting Goat Island Inn. Originally built as a railroad hotel, the Fainting Goat Island Inn has been restored by its current owners from a private home back to its former glory as a place for travelers to stay overnight. As the name suggests, some ghostly guests have made themselves comfortable at the inn including two spectral ladies that have been spotted having tea and overheard having a conversation. The guestbook is filled with praise for the inn and peppered with stories of sightings and noises, with some guests reporting that they heard footsteps on a staircase that no longer exists.
