Hand of Man to Close Next Year

Pat Hanson, owner of The Hand of Man on Riverow in Owego, has announced that after 45 years she will be closing the store in April 2020. The store opened in June 1974 as an indoor farmers market that was open only in the summer and fall. Many changes occurred over the

years - the focus shifted from a farmers market with woodcrafts and a vegetable market to a store with fine gifts, collectibles, ornaments, and a cafe with a patio overlooking the river. Pat invites everyone to stop by and help celebrate The Hand of Man’s last Christmas.

NO JOB TOO SMALL General Home Repairs Basic Chores Left to right: Jean Sabol, VFW Auxiliary 1371 President; William Mortimer; and Joan Vassil, VFW Auxiliary Senior Vice President. Photo by John Mortimer William Mortimer, an 11-year-old homeschool student in the OwegoApalachin Central School District, recently raised funds to perform random acts of kindness in his community. William is currently involved in an integrated 6th, 7th, and 8th Grade curriculum. On November 1, 2019, he took a 100-word spelling test comprised of the first seven lessons in his 6th Grade spelling test. William asked for pledges per correct word to raise money so he could perform random acts of kindness in his community. He scored a 99% on the test and raised $178 in pledges, as well as $420 in direct donations. William has donated to another child’s fundraiser for the American

Heart Association. Also on his to-do list is a trip to Stray Haven as well as donations to Common Ground Christian Community Center, a New Hope Center, and Tioga County Rural Ministries along with anyone else that might need help along the way. William has also donated 2,000 plastic shopping bags for the VFW 1371 Auxiliary which uses the bags to make sleep mats for homeless veterans. The VFW 1371 Auxiliary has made 12 mats. The mats are 36 inches wide and 72 inches long. It takes 200 hours and 400 bags to make each mat. The mats, which provide a layer of protection against dampness, are given to homeless veterans.

Call Santa Claus 625-HoHo Although he is very busy this time of year, the Apalachin Lions Club has persuaded Santa Claus to take phone calls for three nights in early December. For many years, Santa Claus has been happy to do this for the children in our area. And, as always, Santa is look-

ing forwarded to talking to his many young friends so he will know what to leave under the tree when he visits their homes. To talk to Santa Claus, call 625HoHo (625-4646) between 6:00 and 8:00 pm, December 2 to December 4.

Winners of the People’s Choice Mirror Ball Trophy, Jen Brockner & Geraldo Iglesias and Winners of the Judge’s Choice Mirror Ball Trophy, Sonny DeWitt & Jean Graham. Photo: Andreea Earley The Tioga United Way’s Dancing United with the Starz ’19 was a great success thanks to their generous donors, sponsors, dancers, volunteers, and supporters. On Saturday, November 2, more than 400 guests sparkled and swayed in Tioga Downs’ Grand Ballroom in Nichols where Masters of Ceremony, Carolyn Palladino and Cate Pichany along with Disc Jockey, Mike Neil, kept the audience engaged. Tioga United Way Executive Director Meredith Sagor announced that Mr. Jeff Gural would once again match half of what was raised for the entire event. The highlight of the event was watching the 10 competing couples light up the dance floor. The couple who won the Judge’s Choice Mirror Ball Trophy was

Jean Graham and Sonny Dewitt, who danced the Fox Trot to “Singing in the Rain.” The couple who took home the People’s Choice Mirror Ball Trophy and raised the most money was Geraldo Iglesias and Jennifer Brockner, CFO at Tioga State Bank. The total amount raised from the event surpassed their goal of $50,000 which will go toward the 31 agencies of the Tioga United Way. The Tioga United Way would like to give special thanks to Jana Bowen, Anne Grant, Barbara Patten, Madison Hornick, Teresa McNamara, Connie Sternberg, Betsy Snyder, Zoe Ann Zielinski, Carolyn Palladino and Dave Astorina for volunteering their time and energy to make this event a success.

23rd Annual Castellucci Blood Drive - Dec. 19 Donald Castellucci, Jr., Town of Owego Supervisor, will sponsor his 23rd annual Red Cross Blood Drive on Thursday, December 19, from 1:30 to 6:30 pm, at the Elks Lodge on Front Street in downtown Owego. Castellucci started sponsoring blood drives during his father’s final days battling cancer. For the last 22 years during the month of December, Castellucci has dedicated the drive to the memory of his father. “This has become the tradition that I use to honor my dad’s memory,” stated Castellucci. “I have helped raise awareness of the importance of donating blood over the last 22 years. I have done that by sponsoring blood drives in my father’s memory, recruiting over 690 donations, helping to save approximately over 2,070 lives since his death on December 25, 1997. ” Castellucci’s mother, Grace Castellucci, passed away in May of 2010, also a victim of two cancers. She received blood during her four-year battle. Castellucci stated, “It is comforting to know that many people are willing to give an hour of their time and a pint of blood to help others. I have witnessed both the help and the generosity first hand.” Each year a different combination of donors, young and old, help continue to

make this drive a success. Castellucci’s goal is to get 50 donors again this year. As in the past, there will be a rigatoni and meatball dinner served to all donors. After having a bite to eat, donors can enjoy Christmas shopping in Owego. Donors are encouraged to bring food donations that will be collected for the Tioga County Rural Ministry or cash donations to the Ministry in Don Sr. and Grace’s names. The donations collected last year along with the several boxes of food was much appreciated. There are many ways to make a difference in people’s lives. Using just an hour of your time, you can save a life. Can you think of a better way to make a difference? Perhaps you have donated in the past or maybe you have never donated. Now is the time to give that early Christmas present to a stranger you will never meet. Give it a try and see how great it feels to help save a life! To make an appointment, feel free to contact Don at 687-0965. You can also call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE. “Thank you for taking the time to consider this opportunity. It means a lot to my family that you have been there in the past,” said Castellucci. “Thanks again and I look forward to seeing you on the 19th.”

Poblano Cranberry-Orange Relish This relish is a little spicy, and pairs up well over a brick of cream cheese for a dip. 1 navel orange 1 poblano pepper, diced 1 12-ounce package fresh cranberries 2 teaspoons lime juice 1/4 cup white sugar 1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin Grate 2 teaspoons of zest from orange; discard remaining peel and pith from orange. Divide orange into sec-

tions. Place orange sections, orange zest, poblano pepper, cranberries, lime juice, sugar, cinnamon and cumin in a food processor; pulse until finely chopped. Transfer relish to a bowl and cover; refrigerate to allow flavors to blend, at least 2 hours. Overnight is better. Serve with crackers of choice.

Crescent Ring - Breakfast or Brunch 3 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled 1/4 cup cooked ham, diced 1/4 cup cooked breakfast sausage (hot or mild), crumbled 1/8 cup green onion, finely chopped 1/8 cup red bell pepper, finely chopped 6 eggs 1 tablespoon coconut oil 1 cup shredded pepper jack cheese 1 tube crescent rolls salt and pepper to taste 2 tablespoons melted butter 1/4 cup chives for garnish Heat oven to 375°F and line large cookie sheet with cooking parchment paper. In medium bowl, beat the eggs; add first 5 ingredients plus salt and pepper. Whisk until well mixed. Melt coconut oil in a 10-inch non-stick skillet, pour egg mixture into skillet. Scramble until thickened throughout but still moist. Meanwhile, unroll crescent rolls;

separate into 8 triangles. On parchmentlined cookie sheet, arrange triangles with wide sides toward center, overlapping and leaving round circle open in center. Crescent dough triangle points may hang over edge of cookie sheet. Press overlapping dough to flatten. Sprinkle 1/3 cup of the cheese onto widest part of dough. Spoon egg mixture over cheese. Sprinkle with 1/3 cup of the cheese. Pull points of triangles over eggs and cheese, and tuck under dough to form ring. Brush with melted butter and sprinkle with remaining 1/3 cup cheese. Bake 15-20 minutes or until golden brown. Cool 5 minutes. With broad spatula, carefully loosen ring from cookie sheet; slide onto serving platter. Garnish with chives.
