OPERATION RICE BOWL

EMBODYING THE LOVE OF CHRIST BY CARING FOR ONE ANOTHER

Reflect on your Lenten journey thus far: What have you learned from our global family members in Uganda, El Salvador and Indonesia? How does the Eucharist unite us with our sisters and brothers around the world? Consider how Christ is present in Adolf and Florence, Sandra and Santos, and Evita. Visit crsricebowl.org to read this week’s Story of Hope.

The Rice Bowl Collection is the second collection on Holy Thursday. You can place your envelopes in the collection any time during Lent

GOOD FRIDAY COLLECTION

Although often through adversities, a Christian presence always remained in the Holy Land since the beginning of the Church. It is important that Christians continue to live, work and pray in the Holy Land, where the Church started. Christians are now less than 2% of the population, from 23% a century ago, and with the war, many more are thinking about leaving. The Pontifical Good Friday Collection offers all Catholics an opportunity to express their solidarity with Christians in the Holy Land. A donation to the Holy Father’s annual appeal is a direct way to make a difference in the lives of those caught up in war, violence and instability in this region.

What has been accomplished? Last year’s collection supported 23 parishes and three academic institutions; provided a home in Bethlehem fo violence; offered more than 500 scholarships for un open for over 10,000 pre priesthood; restored and maintained 640 houses/apar sistance to more than 9000 families through weekly workers in the Holy Land; preserved 80 shrines from prophets; and continued the work of restoration of the holiest place on Earth.

Thank you for supporting the Pontifical Good Friday

Through this collection, you join with Catholics ar Church in the Holy Land, and become an instrument o Our collection on Good Friday will be the Pontifica You can also place your envelopes in the collection

Deacon’s NOTE

Today I am going to tell you the secret to life. You probably already know what I am going to tell you, though you may not have thought of it as the secret to life. It’s something you’ve seen and experienced over and over. It’s one of those secrets hidden in plain sight. It’s also one of those secrets that can trouble the soul, so we o en turn away from it or close our eyes to it. “Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit”. So there you have it. Now you know. That’s the secret to life.

It’s the pa"ern of loss and renewal that runs throughout our lives and our world. Even if you’ve never thought of this as the secret to life, you’ve lived and experienced it, some$mes by choice and other $mes by chance. Either way it’s there. The power and life of God are present and at work in the depths of our life, in the dark and hidden places. That’s the mystery of life.

2024 REGULATIONS FOR LENT

All faithful of the Diocese of Scranton are reminded of Diocesan Statute No. 41 which addresses the penitential aspect of Lent: “The season of Lent is penitential in nature and during Lent penance should be not only internal & individual, but also external & social Sacrosanctum Concilium, No. 5, 109). Pastors are obliged to avoid scheduling activities in the parishes which in any way could possibly detract from the external and social penance required by Lent.”

During Lent the following fast and abstinence regulations are observed:

• Good Friday, March 29th, is a day of fast and abstinence.

• Fridays during Lent are days of abstinence.

• All Catholics who have reached their 14th birthday are to abstain from eating meat on Good Friday and on all Fridays during Lent.

• All Catholics over 18 years of age to the beginning of their 60th year are bound to the obligation of fasting. Those bound by this rule may take only one full meal and two smaller meals unless dispensed or excused.

LENTEN REMINDERS

Lent is a time for sacrifice and for spiritual renewal as we reflect upon our baptism and the call given to each of us to walk as disciples of the Lord. We are provided with three personal challenges associated with our individual observance of Lent:

• Almsgiving – generously giving to those in need

• Fasting – practicing self-discipline and self-denial

• Prayer – reading, hearing and reflecting on the Word of God

?

• By “giving up” things you hunger after, such as sweets or alcohol; or activities you desire, such as vacations, concerts or movies.

• By “doing” things to help others, such as offering an extra donation to the poor or helping those in need by providing food or clothing.

• By “adding” to our normal routine, such as going to daily Mass, praying the Stations of the Cross and going to confession.

Lent continues until the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday, March 28th.

2024 WEDDING ANNIVERSARY MASS
