There are still Lottery Calendars available in the back of Church. They are $ 20.00 each and run thru December 31st. There are a total of 35 calendars left. The numbers are definitely going down! If every family would take one or two more calendars they would be gone this weekend! Please help make this very important fund raiser a sell out again this year!

MEMORIAL DAY MASS

Mass will be held Monday, May 27th, Memorial Day, at 11:00AM in St. John’s Cemetery. On this day we remember all those who proudly served in the Armed Forces of the United States of America, as well as all our deceased loved ones. Please bring your own lawn chairs to the cemetery. If the weather is bad, Mass will be held in St. Francis Church at 11:00AM. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend.

This Pentecost is the chance for us to thank the Father and the Son for the gi of the Holy Spirit, to pray like the first apostles did surrounded by Mary, and to respond obediently to all his promp ngs. When we remain in the state of grace, we are temples of the Holy Spirit, which is a reality that should astound us: God the Holy Spirit lives inside of us. The Holy Spirit burns within us. But we have to let that flame grow into a bonfire.

Come, Holy Spirit, Fill the Hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love!

PENTECOST

This weekend, the Church celebrates Pentecost, one of the most important feast days of the year. It concludes the Easter season and celebrates the beginning of the Church. Pentecost always occurs 50 days after the resurrection of Jesus and 10 days after his ascension into heaven. Because Easter is a moveable feast without a fixed date, and Pentecost depends on the timing of Easter, Pentecost can fall anywhere between May 10 and June 13. The name Pentecost is derived from the Greek word “pentecoste,” meaning 50th. In Christian tradition, Pentecost is the celebration of the person of the Holy Spirit coming upon the Apostles, Mary, and the first followers of Jesus, who were gathered together in the Upper Room.

It was right after Pentecost that Peter, inspired by the Holy Spirit, preached his first homily to Jews and other non-believers, in which he opened the scriptures of the Old Testament, showing how the prophet Joel prophesied events and the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. He also told the people that the Jesus they crucified is the Lord and was raised from the dead, which “cut them to the heart.” When they asked what they should do, Peter exhorted them to repent of their sins and to be baptized. According to the account in Acts, about 3,000 people were baptized following Peter’s sermon. For this reason, Pentecost is considered the birthday of the Church Peter, the first Pope, preaches for the first time and converts thousands of new believers. The apostles and believers, for the first time, were united by a common language, and a common zeal and purpose to go and preach the Gospel. Typically, priests will wear red vestments on Pentecost, symbolic of the burning fire of God’s love and the tongues of fire that descended on the apostles.

Bishop Joseph C. Bambera and the Office for Parish Life invite couples celebrating their 25th or 50th wedding anniversary in 2024 to a diocesan Wedding Anniversary Mass on Sunday, June 23rd. 2023 CATHOLIC WOMEN’S CONFERENCE—REFRESH YOUR FAITH

Women from around the Diocese gather on Saturday, June 8th, at Marywood University for the Annual Refresh Your Faith Catholic Women’s Conference. Jackie Francois Angel loves being part of the Body of Christ. She fell in love with God at a youth retreat, and now is a full-time traveling speaker, singer/songwriter, and worship leader. Father Giuseppe Maria Siniscalchi, CFR gave up a career in law to follow his vocation and will shine great light on the importance of the Eucharist for our times, the link between the Eucharist and the Gifts of the Holy Spirit, and the healing journey into God’s Merciful Love.

QUO VADIS DAYS

“Do not be afraid. Give him, if he asks it of you, your heart and your entire life.” St. John Paul II Registration for our annual Quo Vadis Days and our first-ever Fiat Days this summer is OPEN! Both Quo Vadis and Fiat are happening June 24-26th at Marywood University and are open to rising sophomores through graduating seniors. After registering, students will need a recommendation from their pastor, a religious sister, deacon, youth minister, DRE, or other adult in ministry. Quo Vadis and Fiat are 3-day summer camps for high school men and women that are designed to teach them about all vocations and enrich their faith through prayer, fellowship, speakers, and activities. Participants will have the opportunity to connect with other faithful young Catholics in the Diocese through games, sports, music, and small group discussion. The cost to attend is $25, which covers 3 days’ worth of lodging, meals, all activities, and custom Diocese of Scranton Quo Vadis and Fiat gifts.
