O Tannenbaum Victorian Christmas Opens November 9 at Tioga County Historical Museum

The O Tannenbaum Holiday Showcase opens on November 9 at the Tioga County Historical Society Museum at 110 Front Street in Owego.

This year's theme is "A Victorian Christmas" and everyone is invited to come and enjoy the holiday splendor and community spirit.

There will be more than 100 trees, wreaths, and beautiful items that were decorated and donated by individuals, organizations and businesses. The items are part of a silent auction that occurs during the span of O Tannenbaum. All proceeds directly benefit the Tioga County

There will also be a Victorianera antique toy display and special activities for children.

O Tannenbaum runs November 9 through December 14, with extended hours beginning the day after Thanksgiving.

The winning posters of Anna and Kate will now go on for judging at the Lions district level. If selected, the posters will be forwarded to Lions International for judging against entries from over 150 countries.

Ski Club Hosts Ski Sale

The Triple Cities Ski Club (TCSC) will hold its 33rd Annual Ski Sale on Sunday, Nov. 24, 10 am to 3:30 pm at Brothers 2, 2901 Watson Blvd., Endwell. The sale is open to the public and gives sports enthusiasts an opportunity to buy and sell downhill and cross-country skis, boots, poles, bindings, clothing, plus snowboarding, skating, hockey, camping, biking and other equipment. In addition to used equipment, ski shops and vendors from ski resorts will be selling equipment and clothing at discounted prices.

Drop off times for items to sell are Saturday, Nov. 23, from 4 to 7pm and 8 to 9:30 am on Sunday, Nov. 24. Sale items must be brought to Brothers 2 (Banquet Room) at the designated times. The registration fee is 50 cents per item and 20% commission for items sold. Pickup times after the sale are Sunday, 4:30 to 6pm following the sale and Monday, Nov. 25 from 4 to 6pm. Sellers can check online during the sale to see if items have sold.

TCSC will also be conducting a bake sale during the ski sale with

proceeds going to Greek Peak Adaptive Snowsports: a program offered

by Greek Peak Mountain Resort which teaches physically and mentally challenged individuals how to ski using adaptive equipment with personal ski instructors. (www.gpadaptive.org) An informational table will be available for people to join TCSC at $10 a year, which gives members discounted prices at area ski resorts and opportunities to go on ski trips at group rates to places in NY, Vermont and an annual western trip. Participants are encouraged to sign up for trips soon as they’re filling up fast.

Club meetings are held at Brothers 2 on the first Thursday of the month at 7pm, September through May, except December and January will be the second Thursdays. The meeting in November will feature information on area resorts that offer discounts to TCSC members.

Snowzilla is an inflatable toboggan slide for adults and children and simulates a snow covered hill that is misted with actual snow.

Ski resort-like machines create a blizzard-like effect for sliders and specially engineered inner tubes make you feel like you are on a ski mountain.

This 30 foot high by 90 foot long massive attraction will thrill the young and young at heart. Riders will climb laddered steps to the peak, then board a snow tube for the ride of their life to the bottom of the slide, and it’s free.

Last year a “Snowzilla” 5K run was held in Owego, the proceeds were donated to help offset the cost

www.warmcomfort.com Tioga Downs is proud to announce that James Witherite, one of the top young announcers in harness racing, will become the track’s full-time race caller beginning with the 2014 racing season.

The 27-year-old Pennsylvania native has spent the past seven years as the track announcer at Harrah’s Philadelphia Casino and Racetrack. Witherite has also called races at more than 60 harness and thoroughbred tracks throughout North America.

“I have always been impressed with every aspect of the racing product at Tioga,” said Witherite, who has had the opportunity over the past few years to call a couple of race cards each season at Tioga Downs. “While I’ve enjoyed a great seven years at Philadelphia and called some remarkable miles there, I’m looking forward to this new endeavor.”

In addition to announcing the races, Witherite will provide his race analysis and commentary in the racing program and on the Tioga Downs website. He will also conduct fan education seminars, meet-and-greets with on-track visitors and even play live music. Witherite is an accomplished multi-instrumental musician and composer.

“We’ve always had a rotating cast of announcers during our race meet, but when it became apparent that James was available, we jumped at the opportunity to get not only one of the premier race callers in our sport, but also a talented and passionate promoter of all aspects of the industry,” said Jason Settlemoir, Vice President of Racing.

“We have great racing here at Tioga and James will only enhance that product,” said Jason Bluhm, Senior Director of Racing. “We plan on creating a prerace show among other enhancements to our live product and James will be an important part of that. I feel privileged to have him join the team.”

Witherite will begin his new role this winter working as a fan education ambassador at Meadowlands Racing and Entertainment, Tioga’s sister property located in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

He will then relocate to Tioga Downs when its racing season begins.

The ninth season of live racing at Tioga Downs is scheduled to begin on Kentucky Derby Day, May 3, 2014 (pending regulatory approval).

Local Firefighters Attend Training in Anti-Terrorism Bomb School Eleven Firefighters from the Owego Fire Department and the Newark Valley Fire Department attended specialized training related to Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).

Two firefighters traveled in July and the rest in September. The course consisted of 32 hours classroom and field exercises. The firefighters were taught the components and composition of various explosive devices and then observed the actual products being detonated in urban and rural environments.

The training was taught by New Mexico Tech under the control of the Department of Homeland Security.

The purpose of the training was to teach awareness, construction and identification of a wide variety of bombs and their explosive impact. The devices included low order and high order explo-

sives in varying amounts of reactive material. The ranges of detonations were as small as a letter bomb and as large as a 250-pound car bomb.

The experiences help local firefighters in performing their duties in response to terrorist bombings.

The fire service has changed dramatically from the old school of directing hose streams into burning buildings to a new modern organization handling fires, Emergency Medical Responses, Hazardous Material exposures, Technical Rescues, Water Responses, and a variety of responsibilities to keep their communities safe from harm. All of this is accomplished with many hours of diverse training under the guidelines of the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control and the Department of Homeland Security.

Annual Owego Home Tour - December 7 Experience the architectural charm and character of Owego during the 33rd Annual Home Tour and Auction on Saturday, December 7.

The event is sponsored by the Tioga Arts Council (TAC).

This year's tour features seven historic buildings and is a wonderful opportunity to observe the creative ways in which historic spaces are used by contemporary families and businesses. For the first time, in addition to the buildings located in Owego's Historic District, a beautifully restored mid-century home located in the Ridgewood Development neighborhood, will be included as part of the afternoon tour.

The afternoon tour is 1:00 to 4:00 pm, the evening tour is 6:00 to 8:00

pm. All tours depart from the Owego Elks Lodge on the corner of Front and Church Streets. Tickets for both tours are $20 each ($15 for TAC Members) and include admission to the after tour party at the Elks which begins at 8:15 pm and features the Four Eye Band.

A silent auction, which features items and services from local businesses, will begin at noon, with bids accepted until 9:30 pm. The auction will be held at Owego Elk’s Lodge.

CCNN Expands Service Area The Community Care Network of Nichols (CCNN) is joining forces with volunteers in Tioga Center, Smithboro, and Barton to expand services into these communities.

CCNN will be reaching out to senior citizens during the next couple of months to answer ten simple questions to help determine the needs of these community members.

CCNN representatives meeting with residents to do the survey will be clearly identified with a photo ID and will provide a brochure with information about CCNN services.

CCNN has been enhancing the

quality of life for people living in and around the Nichols community for over a since 1999. Staff and trained volunteers help in many ways, including providing friendly visits, phone calls, information and referral, as well as help with transportation to appointments, the pharmacy, and the grocery store. During the summer, CCNN staff met several times with residents in the three communities and provided training for 13 volunteers.

Auction to Benefit Historical Society and St. Patrick School Bid high, and bid often! Nichols Man Creates Stained Glass Art for Community Care Network

John Kopacko from Nichols, has many passions: his family, his community, volunteering and his hobbies. What better way to give back to the organization where he volunteers than to combine two of his hobbies, volunteering and creating stained glass creations.

A little over a year ago while helping assemble the Community Care Network of Nichols (CCNN) quarterly newsletter, John noticed the unique logo used by the organization. He thought to himself, “I can make this” and what followed over a course of about 125 hours of work is the beautiful stained glass display shown in the photo above.

John learned how to work with glass at an adult high school class he took back around 1990. Using those basic techniques, he has learned plenty by trial and error over the

course of 20-plus years. After he completed his portion of the creation, John solicited the help of his son-in-law, Larry Jones, from Endwell to create the handmade, custom frame to finish the project.

John has also created other pieces of stained glass art over the years and donated those to Rural Ministries in Owego and to the House of Prayers in Syracuse which was used as a replacement for a window which had been broken.

Dot Richter gratefully accepted John’s creation on behalf of the organization and has since had it displayed in the main office of CCNN located in the old Nichols Elementary School on RoKi Blvd. Feel free to stop by to see this masterpiece during business hours, Tuesday through Friday, 10:00 am to 3:00 pm.

CSI Workshop: Mystery of the Disappearing Diamonds Tioga County 4-H is offering a one-day CSI workshop to uncover the Mystery of the Missing Diamonds.

Youth in grades 5-10 will learn about dusting and fuming for fingerprints, fingerprint analysis, chromatography and ink analysis, blood type analysis (using simulated blood samples), and fiber analysis using a flame test through hands on activities. Each test provides real results that help youth solve the case.

The program will be offered at the County Office Building in Owego, on Monday, Nov. 11 from 9am to 3:30pm. The cost is $30 per youth (lunch included).

Tioga Organizations Receive Grants Three organizations from Tioga County were among those chosen to receive grants from the Community Foundation for South Central New York’s Community Fund and Women’s Fund fall 2013 competitive grant cycles. The organizations and the grants they received are: Regional Science and Discovery Center - $2,000 for STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) programming for preschoolers at multiple sites; Tioga County Historical Society $9,010 to replace the rear entrance damaged in the flood of 2011; and

Tioga Open Door Mission $1,650 to provide emergency financial and informational assistance for women over 55 who are heads of their households and in crisis Thirty-six organizations submitted proposals for over $321,000 in funding requests. The successful grants, which were awarded through a volunteer panel and board review process, will be used for a variety of capital projects, operations and programs at the organizations.

For Holiday hours please call or find us on Facebook An early morning fire on November 2 severely damaged a two-story home at 1235 Sulpher Springs Road in Owego. No one was injured.

Owego Fire and Rescue responded to a house fire at 1235 Sulphur Springs Road shortly before 3:00 am on Saturday, November 2.

The first arriving chief confirmed a heavily involved structure of wood frame, two-story construction approximately five miles from Central Station.

Responding were Engine 804, Engine/tanker 803, Engine 801, Heavy Rescue 851, Tower Ladder 841, Squad 831 and Fire Police 853.

In addition Emergency Support Services were present.

Mutual aid was called in from Southside for two tankers to assist in water supply, from Apalachin for manpower, and from West Corners for a Firefighter Assist and Search Team (FAST) team. Newark Valley was on standby in Owego Central Station. There were approximately 24 Owego Fire Department members present.

On arrival firefighters were faced with an involved interior first floor as well as front porch. An attack with two 1 3/4" lines and one 2 1/2" line extinguished a fire in about 20 minutes. Since fire penetrated the exterior wall on the front side, siding had to be removed to limit extension to the upper floor and attic.

Water availability was not an issue with aggressive support from the mutual aid companies.

The firefighters were on the scene for about three hours and Owego units were back in service at about 8:30 am.

There were no injuries. The residents of the house were able to safely evacuate the house. The teamwork among the fire departments was smooth and seamless.

The cause of the fire is being investigated by the Tioga County Fire Investigation Team.

The Tioga County Boys and Girls Club recently hosted some very generous donors who have given to the club's Raise the Roof Campaign for capital improvements. Their goal is to raise $265,000 for renovations to the building at 201 Erie Street in Owego that the club has called home since 1949.

"With the help of these donors we have been able to raise two-hundred and five thousand dollars so far," Tioga County Boys and Girls Club Executive Director Luke Henson said. Some of the renovations have already been completed, chief among them the entire roof of the facility.

"It was getting to the point that the roof was unsafe," Henson said, "the roof was last replaced in the seventies."

"I knew this had to stay in the community, and we could not let it fail," Cheryl May said of the Tioga County Boys and Girls Club. She gave a significant donation to the Raise the Roof Campaign with her husband Steve. "It's a safe place for kids to come. That's important for the community, and important to me," May said.

Tioga Downs owner Jeff Gural made a generous donation for roof repairs. "Mr. Gural cares about people, and is always looking for ways he can help out in the community," Tioga Downs Director of Human Resources Karen Shelp said, "it's an honor to work with a person like that."

The Mildred Faulkner Truman Foundation also made a $40,000 grant donation specifically for the roof repairs. "It's an honor to be a part of a foundation that gives back to the community," Mildred Faulkner Truman Foundation Grant Executive Stephanie Carrigg said.

Another foundation that found the Boys and Girls Club matches their

philosophy for giving is the Les Wagner Foundation, which gave $25,000 to the Raise the Roof Campaign. "It's an organization that supports the young, middle-aged, and old; men and women, boys and girls," Les Wagner said, "it's one place you can give money to and the whole community benefits. It's the one place that serves everyone."

Steve and Mary Schaeffer Foundation also contributed $25,000 to the Raise the Roof Campaign.

With the roof repaired and improvements made to the parking lot, Henson looks forward to renovating the game room, which has only been remodeled once since it was built in 1949. One of the main goals of the planned $125,000 interior renovation is to provide a place to host the Boys and Girls Club's daycare program, which currently operates out of local schools. Henson said that causes problems when there is a snow day or holiday, since the day care program is unable to run.

Once they're able to host day care services, Henson looks forward to integrating the club's Summer Program, giving more than 100 kids a safe place to exercise, learn, and play. "That will be a huge added benefit for all the kids," Henson said.

The club still has to raise another $60,000 for interior construction to begin.

Another donor to the Raise the Roof Campaign was Ray Reeves, owner of the neighboring Lock-NLoad Sporting Goods. "They've been really good to us over the years," Reeves said, "they are our neighbor and they needed help. It's an honor to do anything we can to help them."

Tax-Aide Volunteers Needed for 2014 The AARP Tax-Aide program needs volunteers to support the free income tax preparation assistance for the elderly and low-income families.

The commitment is from February 3 to April 15, 2014, at locations around Broome County. Volunteers

do both Federal and NYS income taxes. Volunteers with knowledge of both computers and the 1040 tax forms are needed. Classes will begin December 3.

Veterans Day 11-11-11 Honors All Who Served On Veterans Day, Monday, November 11, 2013, Owego and Tioga County will Honor All Who Served for their valor, courage and sacrifice at 11:00 am, at Owego's Tioga County Veterans Memorial.

Veterans and the public are invited to honor those veterans who helped shape American history and to remember the 173 brave service members from Tioga County who paid the price to defend our nation.

The signing of the World War I Armistice took place in a railway coach near the battle zone in France.

The bugles sounded cease fire and the hostilities ended, marking a most significant moment in world history.

Armistice Day 1918 - the 11th hour of the 11 day of the 11th month.

Not forgotten from all wars are our POWs and MIAs. They and their families have suffered greatly through their experiences. Tioga County will honor four MIAs and one POW buried in Korea.

Veterans Day is intended to thank

living Veterans for their service, to acknowledge that their contributions to our national security are appreciated, and to underscore the fact that all those who served, not only those who died, have sacrificed and done their duty.

Roll Call will remember veterans from Tioga County who died since Memorial Day 2013. A moment of silence will honor them and veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice in defending freedom.

All service families and the general public are encouraged to attend the service Honoring All Who Served. Officials urge veterans to wear with pride their service and valor medals. The oldest living veterans will be acknowledged.

Those in attendance should dress warm and bring a folding chair.

The Apalachin Lions Club 5K Run Results

On October 19, the Apalachin Lions Club hosted its 2nd Annual 5K Run at the Apalachin Fireman’s Field Grounds.

Once the October fog lifted, 116 runner’s registered to run the 3.1 mile course. People from across the Southern Tier, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, and as far away as Colorado participated.

The first runner to cross the finish line was Brandon Devonshire, 18, of Warren Center, PA, with a time of 17 minutes and 48 seconds. Just a step behind him was Chris Wescott, 17, of Cortland, with a time of 17 minutes and 51 seconds. The top female finisher was Karli Moyer, 13, of Rome, PA, with a time of 21 minutes and 40 seconds.

This year the Lions added a Walkers Division. Gregg Brown and Mary Hawley, both of Apalachin, brought home top honors.

Following the 5K, a Kids Fun Run took place with about 15 kids entered.
