Dear Friends!

Old ideas die hard. Jesus had been telling his disciples for three years that he did not come to set up a worldly kingdom. But so deeply ingrained in the disciples was the idea of the king of leaders the Messiah would be, that they could not get it straight what kind of Messiah he would be. They were still trying to put him into the mold of Jewish expectation. It would be a physical, worldly, and powerful kingdom. James and John were not exceptions. But Jesus’ response to James and John’s request reveals that if they want to have real leadership in Christ’s Kingdom, they will have to live like him. They will be misunderstood, harassed and persecuted like him. They will come to great leadership only out of great service/suffering. Moreover, Jesus denial to what James and John asked for with the words, “to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but is for those for whom it has been prepared, “reveals that real leadership in Christ’s Kingdom is never given, it is earned in humble and in some cases dangerous serve.

CONVOCATION OF PRIESTS

WORLD MISSION SUNDAY COLLECTION—NEXT WEEKEND

World Mission Sunday, observed on October 20th this year, is not just another Sunday; it is a powerful reminder of our call to be missionaries. The collection taken up today is unique as it is mandated by the Code of Canon Law and is essential for the survival and growth of the Church in mission territories. These funds support the pastoral and evangelizing work of the Church, including building churches, providing healthcare and education, and training future priests and religious. In places where resources are scarce, your generosity makes a profound difference. It is also important to remember the legacy of missionary work. The Church in the United States was once mission territory, supported by the generosity of Catholics worldwide. Today, we continue this legacy by supporting the Pontifical Mission Societies, ensuring that the Gospel reaches the ends of the earth. Our contributions help build and sustain communities of faith in places where the Church is still growing or facing persecution. This mission is a testament to our faith in action, reflecting the universal call to share Christ's love. As we reflect on this year's theme, "Go and invite everyone to the banquet," ," let us remember that our participation and support help invite countless souls to the feast of God's love and let us recommit to supporting our global Church family.

2024 DIOCESAN

ANNUAL APPEAL

CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL

UPDATE

St. Brigid Parish 2024 Appeal Goal is $ 23,474.00. This is a $ 1,474.00 increase from last year’s goal. To date we have $ 9,845.00 pledged which is 41.94% of our Goal. The balance needed to achieve our Goal is $ 13,629.00. Thank you to all our Parishioners for your efforts in helping the Parish to make our goal as soon as possible. Again this year 75% of all money raised over our goal is returned to St. Brigid Parish. This makes a very nice extra fund raiser.

FROM BISHOP BAMBERA

As we approach the upcoming election, I am writing to share a valuable resource that will aid people in making informed decisions as faithful citizens.

The Pennsylvania Catholic Conference has released its Voter Guide for the upcoming election, detailing the positions of presidential candidates on several key issues that align with our Catholic values. A statewide voter guide is also included, but as you will see, there was difficulty in getting candidates to respond to questionaries. In its document, “Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship,” the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops emphasizes the moral obligation we have to participate in the democratic process. It reminds us, as Catholics, we are called to engage in the political process, not only as citizens, but as stewards of God’s creation.

Participating in elections is not merely a right; it is a duty that stems from our commitment to the common good. I encourage all people to register to vote and participate in the political process.

While clergy help form the laity in accordance with basic principles, they do not tell people to vote for particular candidates. As stated in Faithful Citizenship, it is the laity’s responsibility to form their consciences and “grow in the virtue of prudence to approach the many and varied issues of the day with the mind of Christ,” recognizing that our choices can significantly affect the lives of the vulnerable and marginalized in our communities.

Therefore, I encourage all people to reflect on the issues, assess each candidates’ positions and pray for guidance and wisdom in making decisions.

For your reference, the attached Pennsylvania Catholic Conference Voter Guides are the only authorized materials that can be reproduced or distributed on parish property in the Diocese of Scranton. Pastors may distribute the Voter Guides on any weekend in October that works best in your community. The Voter Guides are also currently available on the Diocese of Scranton website at dioceseofscranton.org and will be printed in the October 17th edition of The Catholic Light

May God bless our nation with true wisdom and peace, and we pray that the Holy Spirit will guide our electoral process in the weeks ahead!

Faithfully yours in Christ, †

Most Reverend Joseph C. Bambera, D.D, J.C.L. Bishop of Scranton

Saints: The CCD students have been working hard the past few weeks researching and learning about saints. Each student has been asked to create a saint project about a saint of their choice, and dress as their saint.

Because of the hard work the students have put in, two very special things will be happening in our parish All Saints weekend: On Thursday, October 31st the CCD students will be attending the 6:00PM All Saints Vigil Mass at Saint Augustine. Students should arrive at church dressed as their saint.

Students will be showcasing their hard work in the “Saints Museum” on Sunday November 3rd from 9:10am-10:10am at Neumann Hall. All family members, friends, and parishioners are encouraged to attend this event. When you arrive, you will be able to walk around our showcase, learn about the saints, and even see some of the kids dressed as their chosen saint. Refreshments and light snacks will be provided.
