LIFELINE
“Over the years, the FDA has bent the law and shown disregard for women’s health when it comes to chemical abortion. In 2000, mifepristone was first approved using an ‘accelerated’ review process that is supposed to be only for new drugs that treat serious illnesses and are better than existing treatments. But pregnancy is not an illness, and abortion drugs are riskier than surgical abortion.”
~ USCCB Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities, “Abortion Pills: The Basics”
Dear Friends!
The first reading presents a scene where God takes some of His Spirit from Moses and empowers 70 people wo are inside the tent. Two men named Eldad and Medad are not among those who registered but they too receive the same spirit and began to prophesy. Joshua gets annoyed. He urges Moses to stop both of them from prophesying. Moses questions the attitude to Joshua. Was Joshua a bit jealous of them? The Gospel Reading reports that John tries to forbid an exorcist who casts out demons in Jesus’ name. Perhaps he is not able to tolerate that someone other than the Twelve is doing that. The disciples consider themselves to be exclusively authorized to act in Jesus’ name. They think that they have monopoly over divine power and authority. They forget that just a while ago, someone from the crowd brought his possessed son who was dumb and the disciples could not cast the demon out and heal him (cf. Mark 9:14-29). It is possible that we too feel the same at times. Just because we are baptized or ordained or made our religious professions, we are not better off. We tend to look down upon the people of other faiths or even our own laity and judge them blindly. We are critical of their faith, rites, rituals, culture and way of life. We need to do what St. Paul did in Acts 17:22-34 wherein he appreciates the faith of the Gentiles gathered in Areopagus of Athens. He gives us an impression that he knew their scriptures and the meaning of their worship. He quotes their poets too. Paul is an excellent example of religious harmony in a pluralistic milieu. We have to learn to be tolerant and respectful of other faiths.
