The it is great for finding out how to do something or sourcing parts, as well as keeping up to date with events and looking at what owners have done to their cars with wheels, mods, etc.

Sincere apologies for those that were unable to pay online due to Google closing the Wallet payment process in November. There also seems to be confusion about how we manage the membership process. We are all volunteers and run the Club in our spare time, we are not sat in offices waiting for your call or email. We do send out reminders when your subs are due and generally send out your new cards within a fortnight. If there is a problem please drop Lee a note or give him a call, weekends are the best time to get hold of him. There are details about the AGM and other events in the news and Regional Pages of this magazine. As a member you are welcome to attend any regional event that is being organised. Just contact the organiser and they will give you more details and add you to the list of those attending. You will be made to feel very welcome and will no doubt make some new friends. Before the AGM we are going to hold a session for people that are interested in becoming a Regional Organiser. We have several regions that are not doing a great deal if anything at all. These regions will only become active if someone or a small group (committee) take the lead and organise a few things for the group to enjoy. Organising events is hugely rewarding and seeing a car park with a group of Porsches together makes it all worthwhile. The session will start at 10:00am, please contact me if you are coming along. Simply Porsche at Beaulieu is starting to take shape, there has been lots of interest for the Trade Village. Several regions including Scotland (450 miles away) have started booking hotels. With quite a few Premier and Holiday Inns in the Southampton area accommodation around the New Forest is relatively cheap. We appreciate this is a long way to come for a car show but the opportunity to visit the area especially for weekend is worth the effort and the cost. Entry into the venue is just £10 a per person if you arrive in a Porsche saving £8.50. This includes entry to the Show, Museum, Abbey, Gardens and Palace House, home of the Montagu family for nearly 500 years. In addition to the show, on Saturday we will organise a drive to show you some of the best of the area finishing with a BBQ in the New Forest. If you are coming for the weekend and would like more details please drop me a note. We will be going back to Hatton Country World near Warwick on Sunday 14th September for an end of season get together. This will be a free event and will follow our usual format with trade stands and a Show and Shine competition. The venue is great for all the family with Antique Centre, Farm, Courtyard Shops and Restaurants. See you soon,

Porsche news

New 911 Targa launched Porsche announced a brand-new Targa version of the 991 at North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Just like the classic original 911 Targa from the 1965, this new car features the characteristic metal roof bar in place of the B-pillars, a removable fabric roof over the two front seats, and a wraparound rear window with no C-pillars. Unlike the older models, this new Targa has an electric push-button roof. Flick the switch and the glass rear window lifts, the fabric roof pulls back and stows away behind the rear seats, and the glass window drops back down on top of it. The fabric roof essentially disappears in a 20-second automated magic trick. Available in standard Targa and Targa S models, with 3.4 and 3.8 litre engines respectively, the Targa only comes in four-wheel-drive. It is, in essence, an highpriced variant of the 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet. The new 911 Targa models should be on the road in the UK by May.

Member’s cars Gary Ince Set himself a mega project back in 2011. Gary decided he would build a 911 RSR recreation from scratch. Doing all the work himself took quite some time, but the results speak for themselves.

Back in April 2011, I had a dream to rebuild a RSR recreation with my own fair hands. It started its journey on the back of a friend’s borrowed trailer. Two and a half years later, with a lot of hard work and a limited budget of £15K, that dream has reached fruition and here’s its story … The chassis got stripped back to a wiring loom. It was all cleaned of any rust to show what needed repairing. There was some welding on the rear also both sills, both B-pillars, both front wing supports and RS-style strut brace hangers. Once I was happy with the shell and the two rear arches were fitted, shaped, seamed and sealed it was etched, primed, then primer and flattened. Eventually happy with all the shaping and flatting it was painted ready to start building. In the meantime all the panels had been hung, shaped and prepared and then painted in my friend’s garage so I could get on with the rebuild.

the rear. The rest of the panels came next along with wheels (at long last it was looking like a car!) I stripped the engine down to every nut and bolt to reveal the worst – it need the full works. All new bearings, piston rings, valves and guides and also new barrels. This did not help with the budget! I managed to pull that back with the exhaust system. I was lucky to pick up a set of second hand RSR headers like new and also a Megaflow back box which took a bit of altering to fit, but was worth the time taken as the sound is awesome! With the engine and gearbox in place along with a new clutch it was time to fit the carbs and bits and fire it up to see what kind of job I did.

The sense of achievement is amazing. You soon forget the hours you have spent covered in all that dirt!

While all that was going on I was cleaning all the suspension, brakes and anything else removed, then painting them ready for refitting. The suspension was refitted with polybush suspension along with new wheel bearings and upgrade Turbo tie rods. The brakes are standard with new lines and braided flexi hoses. The fuel lines were then fitted with a PMO fuel regulator as I will be running it on carbs. The fuel tank was converted to the under-bonnet filler cap. Next was a new headliner and glass and perspex rear quarters. I then moved on to fitting the front wings so the lights could be done, with type R in

When the car’s geometry was set up it weighed in on the corner weights at 1,027Kg with half a tank of fuel! Not bad eh?

As you can imagine, the sense of achievement is amazing. You soon forget the hours you have spent covered in all that dirt! There were many of hours sourcing parts, but I managed to but it on the road on budget. I have been having driving it ever since – it puts a massive smile on my face every time I get behind the wheel! Thank you to Johnny & Danny at unit 11 and Simon at Pro-9 for all their advice and help.

Porsche Centre Reading

Central region drop by for a visit and Stu Wakemen talks us through their day.

After previously visiting the OPC in Reading a couple of years ago with Porsche UK for a guided tour of the workshops and on-site facilities. I had always wondered why the TIPEC groups never went, so after becoming joint RO for the Central region, I decided it would be a good idea to change this. My initial approach in December 2012 was received well enough and I struck up a good rapport with Leoni over the next few months with a visit in August being agreed. But this date was dependent upon the workshop extension works due to take place being completed on time. As with all building works and best laid plans, delays meant the visit had to be postponed. Leoni then left on maternity leave, but to her credit, she ensured that this matter was passed onto Becky, who also was very helpful. So at long last in mid-September the date of Saturday 26th October was agreed.

This was a little later than I had wished for, as I was mindful that a few people would not drive their beloved cars on a cold and wet damp day. But as it turned out the rain held off and the sun even came out at times. A few of us met at the Warwick services at 8:30am and we had a steady drive down and arrived shortly before 10am. Others who had shorter distances to come started to flow in from between 10:30am and 11am, Kevin being the last, but he had driven from Wales. Now that’s dedication. Straight away we were met with warm friendly smiles and made to feel welcome and once the majority had arrived we were then shown to the canteen where the technicians were on hand to discuss our cars and for a formal meet and greet from the Service Team. Totally unexpected was that we were given bacon or sausage sandwiches with our tea or coffee. Very much appreciated by one and all. The guided tour of the workshops then started and the chance of discussing our ownership of Porsche cars and the interest we have within the brand. It quickly became evident that the technicians and the

aftercare sales team shared our passion. Everyone at Porsche Reading did themselves proud and their passion for the cars and brand continued throughout our visit. What we did not know was how much effort everyone on-site had put in for us to make us feel so welcome, but this became apparent when we moved into the newly built extension. The day was a massive success both from the feedback received from the TIPEC group but also from Porsche staff who loved the fact that we owned and still drove the older cars, as well as the newer models, but also appreciated the passion we had for the brand. For me, that is what it is all about, enjoying the cars! And the company of likeminded people. Once back inside we were given tea or coffee with biscuits and treated to a goody bag for our troubles, which was a fantastic surprise.

Porsche Reading’s 50th year project car looked great from the front

Having spoken to Porsche since to convey our gratitude, they also said how much they all had enjoyed it, how well it had worked, and that they would like to have us back again for another visit sometime in 2014 – hopefully when the weather will be a little warmer so that they can host a BBQ. Looking forward to that already and I will keep you all updated when I have something more concrete about this. So there is just time to thank one and all at Porsche Reading especially Becky who helped me to get this event arranged and to all those people who came, thank you. See you all very soon.

A view of the cars outside. Now, which one can I have?

There was a very nice view from the canteen ...

A toast — to another 50 years and another 20 years As we draw to the end of another year we can celebrate 20 years for the club and 50 years for the iconic Porsche 911, what better way to round off 2013 than with the annual Classic Car Show at the NEC, Birmingham.

As usual the club put on a stunning display of cars courtesy of Central Region and its members. Every year there are different members’ cars to be seen and 2013 was no exception, together with an emphasis on the 911. The club always shows a race or track derived car and 2013 was no exception. Perhaps not many members are aware that Chris Franklin of Center Gravity is a club member, so it must have been a surprise for many show visitors to see him and his right-hand man Pete at the show, willingly offering advice. Chris’s own car was there … just! It came out of the paint shop on the Wednesday (two days before the show opened to the public) and was built on the club stand the day before the show opened.

Not only did we have the club stand on which to show our cars but Graham Plumb was on the Meguiar’s stand with his stunning Arena Red 993 C4S. Our other exhibitors were a little less stressed but for everyone the build up day on the Thursday is always problematic. Never a year goes by without a problem with one of the cars or with the build up of the stand, and 2013 was no exception. Still, the three days of the show make it all worthwhile in spite of the resultant sore throats, aching backs and tender feet. It’s a pleasure to see members from far and wide, especially the far-flung Scottish Region (thanks for the cakes). It was also good to see resurgence in people wanting to join the club after a very lean period due to the recession. So for those regions that have gained members as a result of the show let’s all work together to keep the ‘newbies’ and so keep growing our special Porsche community.

New show convert Byron with his fabulous 964 (including colour co-ordinated 964 model on the back shelf of his car) had a fabulous induction to the world of shows. Hopefully, we will find yet another convert in 2014 and so enhance the pool of available cars. As usual the photographs help to tell the story of the show! See you there next year.

It will probably be the tail end of February or early March before we officially produce what will happen and I am sure from all your suggestions it will be another action-packed year. We have on offer a demo restoration night from Bill Dalgetty at Classic Car Restorations in East Lothian

and the new annual TIPEC venue will replace Gaydon so all in all something different and something of old to look forward to. I must take this opportunity to say a huge thanks to Alan Neilson for his role as ARO over the years who has decided to stand down as the ARO for Scotland West as he and Maree will soon be proud parents for the first time and has decided to focus on family and work commitments. Alan will still continue to be a member and enthusiast with the region but not in the ARO role. We all wish Alan and Maree the very best and thank you for your valued contribution over the years. We will see the three of you all soon I am sure of that. (Do you get baby seats for 944s? I hope so!) Please keep an eye on your inbox for the spring run details and a possible hook up with the North West Region in late April. We will update in the usual fashion of email and the TIPEC.net site as well as the monthly meetings. Meantime we hope to see you all very soon and I am already getting excited about the new season for 2014. If you require more information on any aspect of the Scottish Region’s activities this season then please do not hesitate to contact James or myself. We are

only too happy to answer and help with any questions you may have. To finish, James has a few words on our region’s Christmas do: “The Scottish Region held their annual Christmas get-together in Fisher’s Hotel in Pitlochry this year. An excellent turnout on the 14th December of nineteen couples made the trip to the beautiful town of Pitlochry for our dinner dance. Party frocks and paper hats brought more than a touch of glamour to an evening of wine, chat, turkey and dance. “The hotel made us very welcome with a ‘wee dram’ on arrival and another prior to going into dinner. After the traditional meal, and when the last of the awful jokes from crackers had been told, it was on to the dance floor or a quieter seat in the ‘snug’ for a blether with old (and some new) friends. When the band finally put down their guitars and the shutters came down on the bars in the wee small hours it was off to bed. The following morning saw a late-ish relaxing breakfast – full Monty of course – then goodbyes. A great weekend of good company, terrible jokes and the worst ‘Dad dancing’ ever witnessed!”

As we went to print for December’s edition of AT, ARO Simon Kendal was putting the finishing touches to the Hartech visit on Saturday 16th of November. A few of us met at our club night venue for a steady drive over the tops to Hartech, whilst others who lived in other directions chose to make their way straight there. Simon’s meticulous planning paid off and we were welcomed by a very enthusiastic (if under the weather) Barry Hart at his Bolton premises. Some of you may, or may not know that Barry is a founder member of the club and has operated Hartech since the mid to late ’90s. Subsequently Barry recognised a few faces as they have been customers in the past and at present.

RO & ARO wanted Meetings are held first Tuesday of every month 7:30pm at The Arabian Horse, Main Street, Aberford, LS25 3AA (Tel 0113 281 3312). Just off the A1/A64. RO and ARO required, to host monthly meetings and to attend/organise local events.

When this falls on a Bank Holiday, we meet on the second Monday instead. Can you believe we are at the start of another year already? I hope you all had a great Christmas and would like to wish you a happy and prosperous New Year. Not to mention a Porsche and TIPEC packed one too! First of all I must give thanks to Richard for drafting up December’s report in my absence. We have a few things to bring you up to speed with to round up 2013, and a few things to enlighten on for 2014. So without further ado here’s how we wrapped up last year.

North West region members outside Hartech

Coffee and biscuits greeted us before being given an overview of Barry’s endeavours of the last 30 odd years. We were then introduced to the rest of the team. Next up we took in the workshops where the cars go on the ramps and were invited to put our cars on the ramps for a no-obligation inspection. A good few members got involved and I think all passed with flying colours! The engineering workshops, where Hartech carry out M96 & 97 engine repairs were our next port of call. It was very interesting to see what remedies are carried out for these fabled power units and enlightening to see the improvements they can perform to the original engine design. Hartech are very accomplished engineers. We also saw some rolling road testing going on with one of their race cars, and got the chance to sit in both their race prepped Boxster and 996 in the Showroom. Lunch was provided in the form of the very excellent pasties from the Ye Olde Pasty Shop” in town, and as you know with us North Westerners, good food always makes the day a success! Finally, to round up the visit, Barry and the team had rigged up a driving simulator of a Boxster going round Silverstone. Apparently this is going to be a permanent fixture for customers, although I suspect nobody will want to leave once they have called to collect their car! Again, a well-supported day-out, and many thanks to Simon for organising it. Late November saw a good few members accept an invitation from Porsche Centre Bolton to a Motorsport open day. Adam Calvert, who works in the parts department, called in to our November meeting to inform us of the details and open the invitation. Members were treated to various displays of road and race cars. Also there were various activities on offer to keep the punters happy, including driving simulators and an MPG challenge in a Panamera. The winner was the one to get the best MPG over a pre-

planned route. That honour went our very own Simon Kendal who will get the chance to take part in a half day experience at Porsche’s Silverstone facility. Well done Simon for your frugal efforts. Our December meeting saw the return of our Annual End of Year Quiz with some fantastic prizes kindly donated by Porsche Centre Bolton – many thanks to Adam Calvert for this. Richard donated a book and also, a great motorsport poster donated by Marc Slater – all offerings greatly appreciated. The year was rounded off with our Christmas party at the Inn On The Prom Hotel in St Annes. Unfortunately our resident snapper, Tony Levy was unable to make it due to illness and was sorely missed. I think that is possibly only the first or second event he’s missed since becoming a member, so we’ll excuse him this time! A great night was had by all and Mrs L even made it down for breakfast this year! That’s about it for just now, but we have already got things buzzing for the year ahead. Many thanks for joining us on last year’s events. I hope we continue to see you into 2014 as without your membership, we wouldn’t have a club. So please lend your support again. Richard will be keeping the website up to date and Simon will be busy on the forum keeping you informed. Also as usual I will be sending out the emails. We will have had our January meeting by the time you read this so I will list upcoming events from February onwards: February 3rd (Monday) Club Night at The Boatyard February TBC Visit to Lee Mayor Restorations Lee has an enviable reputation in our area and will be well worth a look. Lots of fun and merriment was had, with most members being the slideshow victims! The Christmas quiz was a huge success with prizes galore! A cracking night! On the 14th we saw the SYNN region Christmas party at Ye Olde Bell. We had around 13 guests, (we need more in 2014) with another great night. The food and drink went down a treat, and partying continued until the early hours. The January meeting was on the 5th, where we discussed the upcoming 2014 events. First event of the new year was the Pistonheads show at the Birmingham NEC on the 12th January. February We are planning a meal out together, provided the snow doesn't stop us! Monthly meetings throughout 2014: First Sunday of each month The Goat at Hertford Heath from 10.30am Last Monday of each month Porsche night at the ACE café on the North Circular. Our regular monthly meetings have already commenced with a visit to the Goat at Hertford Heath on Sunday 5th. A break in the weather gave us a chilly, but dry morning and regulars Peter, Ian, Tony and new member Steve Sydee were present to see some interesting cars, including a 1935 Lagonda racer, equipped with pre-selector gear shift, a Ford hot-rod and some American muscle, amongst the usual array of interesting vintage, customs and classics. We are investigating at other events in 2014, including: Harpenden, Croxley Green, Tewin, Little Gransden, Bletchley Park, Hendon Aircraft Museum, Blenheim House, Woburn Classics and Luton festival of transport. Once Peter and I have dates we’ll see how the events pan out for diary planning. If members have other events to suggest, please let us know and we’ll add them to the mix.

SELNK’s Christmas meal at the Harrow

December club meeting Fairly low turnout but a lively meeting nevertheless. Discussion on the 2014 calendar and forthcoming events, including the Simply Porsche weekend at Beaulieu in June. Christmas Dinner From a slow start we ended up with 24 for this and scarily we were the only ones eating in the Harrow that night. It was a great evening, everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and the food and drink were very good. January club meeting Not a bad turnout given the dire weather, with discussions of flooding across most of Kent being on the news that evening. The pub had actually been flooded over Christmas. Welcome to Graham & Kathryn who had acquired a Boxster over Xmas. I think we convinced them that A) We’re all mad, and B) It is worth joining TIPEC. February 22nd (Saturday) George & Gill boat Trip From Greenwich 18:00–22:00 and £20 per person. Contact Jim & George urgently if you wish to come! Meetings are held second Wednesday of every month 8pm at The Bolney Stage, London Road, Bolney RH17 5RL, just off the A23, 10 miles south of Crawley. For those of you who haven’t made it along to a monthly meet yet, we always welcome new members and prospective members. Come and see if you like us, we’re a friendly bunch no matter what model of Porker you own or desire and you will be guaranteed to receive a hearty welcome and make some new friends. You also have the opportunity of winning our own regional lotto, with all SE Region members going into the hat each month – but you have to be at the meeting to win if your name is drawn out. 2013 was not only the club’s 20th anniversary it was also the S.E. Region’s 20th anniversary as we were one of the four founder regions. The SE Region RO (originally the Sussex Region) was Alan Clarke who rejoined the club recently and is now within The Bristol Region. The others being Bedfordshire (later becoming Beds, Bucks & Herts. The RO was Jackie Butterfield), Staffordshire (later becoming the West Midlands. ROs were Tony & Lynn Reddall), and Wiltshire (later becoming Hants & Wilts. The RO was Roger Raggett) all under the leadership of the Club’s founder Secretary Gary Downs. The Club rapidly grew to eight Regions with some of the original four expanding their territories and renaming. Three new regions closely followed , namely Devon & Somerset (RO Steve Fuller), Cheshire Lancs & Merseyside (later becoming North West. The RO was Barry Hart), Cambs & Lincs (RO Mick Tyers) and then Thames Valley (RO Sharon Spooner). As a founder member I even still have the founder member T-Shirt awarded to the first 100 members to prove it – Any sensible offers considered ... one day it may appear on the Antiques Roadshow! Christmas dinner party The December meeting was also our annual Christmas dinner party when we had 34 attendees having a great time with excellent food and hospitality in a great environment. Our regional lotto had been rolling over for months so was drawn until we had a winner – Nick & Jane Barnes who duly received £60. This year’s raffle included many kindly and generously donated prizes including a free oven clean voucher from James Garrard (Ovens n’Stuff), a

free professional valet and ‘Porsche for a Weekend’ from Porsche Centre Mid Sussex and £25 cash from our venue hosts – The Bolney Stage Inn, in addition to the usual collection of festive and motor/Porsche prizes. The SE Region Member Of The Year (MOTY) for 2013 was also announced at the Christmas dinner and this was awarded to Peter Rowe who has been our main contact with our local OPC, Porsche Centre Mid Sussex, for many years, ensuring that members are kept informed of all Porsche news as well as providing an invaluable service to TIPEC with his product and technical knowledge of Porsche cars and services and also arranging many events for TIPEC at our OPC. We wish Peter every success in his new career moving from Porsche to Honda, but still staying within the Sytner Car Group. Indoor Karting, Friday 8th November We held our first indoor karting experience at Crawley when 12 members took part at the UK’s largest indoor circuit at 800metres long, using all three circuit levels which was awesome with plenty of four wheel drifting at over 45 mph. The circuit is definitely challenging – I and a couple of others accidentally drove into the pits twice on consecutive laps in race one before we had learned the racing line. Dan Engledow was the fastest driver in this first taster event and we had now arranged an exclusive TIPEC Grand Prix event at the end of January . 2006 Porsche Cayman S manual

£19,995.00

Due to a house move, and my wife’s urge to go topless in a Boxster, my Cayman S needs to go – very reluctantly. I’ve spent a small fortune on her and hope to pass her on to an enthusiast who’ll appreciate JMG’s tender lovin’ and Hartech’s engine rebuild. She’s done just 53K with full FSH, all documentation and a mountain of paperwork and receipts for a new starter motor, alternator, new belt, discs and pads all round and lots more. The Hartech rebuild (still under warranty) was done in July at 45K. She of course had, at the time, an upgraded IMS bearing, new RMS, all cylinders were strengthened and a low temp thermostat was fitted as well as other ‘nick nacks’ to future proof the car. The tyres have lots of life left on ’em, as does the clutch – JMG, who refitted the engine, says ‘about 30K or so’. Interior is unmarked black leather and she has a six CD changer, satnav, auto aircon, rear wiper and heated seats. The exterior is almost blemish free (the usual stone chips), the MOT’s ’til November 2014, taxed ’til April. Please contact Wayne on 07976 959 230 or email at wayne.morley@hotmail.co.uk

2007 Porsche Boxster 3.4 S Boxster 3.4s, 56 plate, soft top with tiptronic gearbox, 43,500 miles and in regular use. Registered Feb ’07. Two former owners. Full history from OPC and JMG and uses virtually no oil – had an inspection by GT One prior to purchase including a borescope camera inspection which revealed no issues. Last serviced Feb 2013 by JMG including a gearbox service and the rads cleaned out. Tax to end Sept 14, MOT to 10th Sept 14 – no advisories on last MOT. Rear tyres are almost new, plenty of tread on the fronts. New battery fitted Nov 2013. Mark at JMG commented that the car was “in very good condition and clean underneath” when serviced in February. Some stone chips and a couple of small scratches, wheels are in good condition – no kerbing. Interior in excellent condition. This is a car that is driven, loved, cherished and enjoyed! Please call Andrew on 07974 256 694 Arrival of 911 forces sale.
