Well since writing my initial Chairman’s piece we have had a fantastic couple of months. Firstly we had a brilliant Simply Porsche show. The feedback from Beaulieu is that attendance was way up on last year. I know the whole place was packed, aided by the great weather. Thanks to Sean Smallman & Steve Waggs who organised this, but of course there were many others who assisted. I spent a while on the club stand and the feedback was great. Subsequent feedback on the various forums as well as our own has been complimentary. On the day we took 13 new members and spoke to many more who were thinking about joining. It certainly raised the profile of TIPEC as a whole which can only be a good thing. The array of cars was stunning with everything from a very lovely 356 to the latest 991 and everything inbetween. This represents everything that TIPEC is about, completely non-elitist. Debs Bradshaw from Bristol won the big prize draw which was a Porsche Experience day and a Spa day at a top hotel, worth circa £700. All you had to do to be in the draw was come to the Porsche stand with your membership card and register with membership and mobile number. The draw took place at 15:00 and you had to be on site when it was drawn to collect. The first person out of the hat had already left, Debs was drawn second. Enjoy the prize Debs! Many thanks to Paul Bird for arranging this, definitely something we will repeat. Shortly after Simply Porsche we had the Blyton Park trackday organised by Paul Bird which went very well. This was an ideal non-damaging way to stretch the legs of your Porsche in the UK and still keep your licence. See Sue’s report on the day later in this magazine. The second big event in June was Porsche coming 1st, 2nd & 5th at Le Mans, their 17th win at this event, pushing Audi back to 3rd & 4th. Porsche said they would take the fight to Audi and by golly they did. I’m still bitterly disappointed that I wasn’t there, but there was some coverage on Quest luckily for me to get my fix from. As a general non-follower of sport, it just astonishes me that the likes of the BBC can spend a fortune buying football rights but completely ignore an event such as this which had 245,000 spectators and nearly 5.5 million watching on WebTV. We are now in peak period for club events both at a local level such as Classics at the Castle that Sue Simmons is organising for the Bristol region and the real biggie, the Silverstone Classic July 24–26th. This is a massive event and I know we get a huge turnout for this. Paul Bird has also started organising our display for the NEC Classic which will be later in the year. We have new flags for the regions plus TIPEC business cards and also membership flyers. Talk to your RO or AROs if you want some. An excellent way of starting discussions with Porsche owners, having a talk about TIPEC and even getting them to join. ROs – we issued a lot out at Simply Porsche but if you want any stationery get in touch with me. On a couple of admin points, the subject of valuations has come up several times since the last All Torque. Jason Gibson has taken on this role together with the Vice Chair role. Valuations are for club members only and to initiate this please drop an email to valuations@tipec.net. Also membership issues are dealt with by Lavenham so if members have any problems with renewals or new members then it is best for them to get in touch with Lavenham direct. Details for both are on the inner front page. Finally can I make a plea on Tony’s behalf for more articles for the magazine please? It makes Tony’s job so much easier if he has a pool of articles to work with. Simple maintenance articles always go down well, but running reports, buying articles etc. are all welcomed. This is your magazine –get involved!

Apps for Petrolheads We are all familiar with satnav systems and satnav apps that can be downloaded onto our smartphones, but there are many other musthave apps available for petrolheads. Derek Flanagan talks us through some favourites.

Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera: The Last of the Evolution By Tony Cortlett Veloce Publishing Ltd, £37.50 ISBN 978-1-904688-65-2 www.veloce.co.uk This is a handsome reprint of Tony Cortlett’s 2005 book on the 3.2 Carrera. It’s a history, a technical record, and a love letter to what many believe was the last ‘true’ 911. Covering the ‘Impact Bumper’ years, from 1984 to ’89, this compact coffeetable book kicks off with a foreword by none other than Peter W. Schultz – ex Chairman of Porsche AG and saviour of the 911. Arguably, without Schultz the front-engined models would have bene Porsche’s future and the 911 its past. The 3.2 Carrera would never have been built. That’s an auspicious start and the book dives straight in to a definitive history of the various models produced, with a few pages on each. There’s a good range of photography and the breadth of variations on the Impact Bumper 911 is breathtaking. The latter half of the book follows up with short chapters on matters like suspension, driving feel, track vs road carachteristics, and even a feature on the ultimate ’80s 911 – the Ruf CTR Yellowbird. Cortlett’s book wraps up with a comparison against the Ferraris of the same era, and contains as much technical detail as you could wish for – from paint codes and option lists to the factory specs of each engine variant. It’s not without flaws though … adverts for the publisher and their other books are dotted throughout, distractingly, and there is little flair to the design. It’s a thorough book though, and recommended for any 3.2 Carrera enthusiast.

TIPEC visits the

Isle of Man

The start of May meant the time had come for the eagerly anticipated trip to the Isle of Man by members of the Bristol, South Wales and South West region. 21 cars and 39 occupants took to the roads heading up north to Lancaster and an enjoyable evening prior to boarding the ferry across the Irish Sea to Douglas. The weather gods were on our side – 24 hours earlier the rough sea had led to the cancellation of the crossing but we enjoyed a very smooth journey arriving in port in time to get our first taste of the ‘Mountain Road’ otherwise known as the TT course, as we made our way to the hotel that was to be our base for the four-night stay on the island. The Ramsey Park Hotel is situated on the edge of Ramsey at the Northwest of the island, with glorious views all around – the hills, the sea, and the surrounding park, as well as a completely Porsche dominated car park. This first taste of the TT roads took us up into cloud but still gave the impression of the excitement and skill needed to drive this course, and the next few days gave everyone the chance to sample the entire 37 mile course in parts or as a whole. The Isle of Man has no speed limit outside built up areas so several of the cars and drivers took the opportunity to make the most of the experience, whilst others enjoyed the drive along with the beautiful scenery and landmarks that the route offers. The Isle of Man offers an amazing array of things to do and over the few days as groups or individuals we went on steam trains from Port Erin to Douglas, the electric railway up Snaefell, and trams along the promenade in Douglas. We visited transport museums, castles – at Peel and Castletown – Wildlife Parks, numerous cafés and pubs, and of course the famous Laxey Wheel and mining area – always receiving the warmest welcome from the locals. A small group of us were just walking down the road (away from our cars) the day before we returned home and a lady came out of her house and shouted hallo. We wondered who she was but she said “I recognise you all – you came in your Porsches to the Laxey Wheel and I was the lady in the ticket office” – well you can certainly say TIPEC makes a good impression! Personally I would really recommend the Isle of Man – it has the obvious motorsport connections and possibilities but even as a destination for a short break it has lots to offer. Thanks to Kieran at Scenic and Continental for all his help in putting the trip together. I think everyone is looking forward to the next TIPEC trip, and there’s not long to wait as we are off to another island in September – the beautiful Isle of Wight. Text by Sue Simmons. Cayman to the Continent Paul & Linda Gaughan took the long way round to the Porsche Museum at Stüttgart…

Sunday 16th March 2014 was the start of plans for the coming year’s holiday on the continent. We had already decided on where and what we wanted to see. Preparations were now underway to prepare the Cayman ready for the Grand Tour, as it would be covering around 3,500km this year. We had decided to visit some of the areas we had enjoyed in the past and add in some new ones. This would be the Porsche’s first major run abroad and we were looking forward to experiencing the pleasures of Continental driving. This year we planned to drive down through Germany and into Switzerland. We planned to have a relaxing start by catching the overnight ferry from Hull to arrive in Zeebrugge the following morning. It is always a pleasurable trip, Hull being less than an hour’s drive from home in Doncaster.

and breakfast and fully refreshed we drove the Porsche off our ferry. Before driving out of the port complex I set the speedo to km/hr, adjusted the headlight dip settings for right hand drive roads, a quick check of the maps and set the satnav, then we were off. Our plan was to break the holiday up into a series of short visits with excursions out to places of interest. Our first stop this time was Dieblich on the River Mosel, and easy drive through Belguim, Holland and Germany of around 500Km or so. During our stay here we had a number of great drives along the Mosel, visited the Riechburg castle at Cochem, and the superb Burg Elze. We also took a drive across to the Rhine and Nahe rivers to visit St Gore and Rudeshiem and were tempted to drive to the Nürburgring but decided to hold this off for a future trip. We had a great stay at Dieblich before packing up for a 10am start for the drive to Baveria.

This would be the Porsche’s first major run abroad and we were looking forward to experiencing the pleasures of Continental driving.

Our trips touring the Continent by car go back over 30 years, experienced in various cars and for the past 10 years in an MX5. We have done too many trips to mention all over France, Germany, Austria and Switzerland, but some of our highlights have been; the Dordogne, Cote d’Emeraude, Cote d’Azur, Monaco, Bavaria, the Black Forest, The Eagles Nest, Colditz Castle, The Austrian Tirol, Vienna and Lake Luzern. We always travel on these tours on our own, it all adds to the excitement and allows us to decide what we want to do and really experience the language and culture. We always meet interesting people and make discoveries quite by chance. Having pre-booked our hotels and worked out an outline route and arrived at the port with the Porsche packed and fuelled up. Our departure date was 7th July and the plan was for a three week holiday. We go through the usual formalities at the port and then onto the ferry, and hurray! We are off. The journey across was smooth and we have a pleasant evening in the Brasserie enjoying a nice steak and a bottle of Chateau la Fite followed by the onboard entertainment, before turning in for the night. We docked in Zeebrugge at 9am the next morning and after enjoying a great night’s sleep

It was to be our first visit to Munich and we had found a great hotel near the Bahnhof in the east of the city, which had secure underground car parking. It had good access to the U-Bahn and S-bahn, both within a five minute walk. The city is absolutely fascinating and we loved wandering around the old town, parks, the Rat Haus, Maximillian Strasse which is full of designer shops, and one of the most incredible markets. We had a great visit to the Rat Haus enjoying sitting in the open air eating and drinking while being entertained by a traditional oompah band by Bavarian musicians who all seem to be very proud of wearing traditional attire.

We were at our Munich hotel on the night World Cup Final was played (Germany vs Argentina). Our hotel had set up a massive outdoor screen and bar on the night, for all to enjoy, what a fantastic evening that was. The time flew by and before we knew it we were into our fifth and final night. We had previously found a great steakhouse that specialised in traditional spare ribs with Bavarian beer. This was incredible and was the largest meal I have ever seen on one

plate. To finish the evening off we then wandered up to the square in front of the railway station to the traditional Oktoberfest for the entertainment with more beer and wine! Another great night. The time had come to pack up and move on. The Porsche had been parked up for the last five days, so we packed the car, which is surprisingly easy in the Cayman since it has loads of storage space between the two boots. We were driving down to Luzern in Switzerland. The route we would be taking would take us via the Autobahn to the Austrian border and then onto the smaller roads in Switzerland. On this section I could really see what the Porsche could do, and did! Since the Autobahn had sections of unrestricted speed limits … German metal certainly dominates these roads, and got quite a few acknowledgments from like-minded drivers. As usual I had to stop at the Austrian border to purchase the Vignettes which would allow us to drive on Austrian and Swiss roads. Once into Switzerland we were on the small roads, passing through small towns and villages. I really had to watch the speed limits now since there are unmarked speed cameras in some of the most unlikely of places, I can tell you that the camera flash is the first indication of their existence! We arrived at out hotel on a beautiful sunny evening after a phenomenal drive down. The Seehotel we had chosen we have used several times before and is situated on the edge of Lake Luzern overlooking the lake and Mount Riga at the rear and Mount Palates at the front. After booking in we could relax on our veranda overlooking the lake taking in the fantastic views, before preparing to head on

down to the restaurant. We were shown to our table and as we sat down at our table on the terrace and looked out over the lake a paddle steamer pulled into the hotel jetty tooting its horn – what a wonderful sight. The car had done well and had more work to do on the next phase, but for now we parked up for three days as we used the paddle steamer, trains and cable cars to get around. The following morning we caught the early morning paddle steamer for a trip across the lake to Luzern for a day in the city. There were some fantastic views on the trip, and we took loads of pictures. Luzern is a very pretty city and looks wonderful on the approach in by water, we always love this. After a great day out we returned back via steamer. There was still time enough for us to relax by the pool with a book, have a swim and talk over the day’s events. We weren’t brave enough to swim in the cold waters of the lake though but the locals seem to love it! This was the day of our 34th wedding anniversary so our hotel had organised the best table for us and I ordered a bottle of Champagne with our meal to celebrate, and was great, this finished the evening off nicely. The following day I had organised tickets to do the round trip up to the Kulm at Mount Palates. So after breakfast we caught the paddle steamer in the opposite direction to Alpnach Stad. This was a brilliant trip, the steamer took a tour around the lake stopping off at several little hamlets picking up passengers before arriving at our drop off point at Alpnach. The village of Alpnach Stad is the location of the Funicular station where the train to take us up to Palates was waiting.

All Torque 112 page 11

but not for the faint hearted at speed, since there are no barriers and there are sheer drops down the mountain side, but the views are spectacular. The whole run is no more than 30–35km in length, but we did this in both directions and repeated some of the sections a number of times to take in the views and take photographs. There was still snow on the sections of the pass and even at the height of summer. The Cayman performed faultlessly with confidence and ease. I couldn’t get enough of driving on these roads, as indeed it was agreed by other Porsche drivers we met on the pass. In addition to the Furka Pass we also drove across to Andermatt and up to Oberalpsee and Tschamut for photos of the car in some of the Bond film locations. On our final drive we did the Gothard pass which was just as good and took us very close to the Italian border.

The Funicular carriages are angled at 30 degrees for the climb up the mountain side; this is amazing since as the train climbs the mountain the lake gets smaller and smaller and we began to see over some of the lower peaks until we reached the halfway station. Then off again even higher and higher through the clouds, it was amazing to see cattle with their distinctive cloches and goats and the like up at these dizzy heights. We eventually reached the top, to be greeted by a blast on the mountain horn. At the top we had a walk around the mountainside to look at the views from each side and direction; from up here we could see Switzerland from horizon to horizon, Lake Luzern looked tiny. Out came the binoculars and the camera again for loads more pictures.

After three days of hard driving we were off to our next hotel. We would be making our way back northward back into Germany, this time it would be the city of Stüttgart. Packing up the car once again for a 10:30am start we had to drive over to Andermatt to fuel up. Super Unleaded 98 Octane fuel is scarce in Switzerland but not letting the car get low on fuel I had just to top up with 95 Octane.

On the Furka Pass, the Cayman performed faultlessly with confidence and ease. I couldn’t get enough of driving on these roads.

We had our lunch with drinks on the panoramic deck at the Kulm, before heading to the souvenir shop for some goodies before catching the large cable car down the other side of the mountain to Kerns. The cable car stopped halfway down and we transferred onto a smaller cable car for four occupants, the views from this were once again amazing. From the cable car station at Kerns we made our way back to Luzern to catch the paddle steamer once again back to our hotel. What an experience this was and a high point for our last full day here before packing the Cayman again for a drive into the mountains. The next hotel we had booked was in the quiet little village of Realp. This is located at the start of the Furka Pass and for the Motorail terminal and the historic Steam Railway to Oberwald, for those wishing to avoid driving on the pass! The hotel we had chosen was ideally placed for trips up the Furka and Gothard Passes. The Furka Pass would give the Porsche a true test on the hairpin bends, switchbacks climbs and descents. After a good meal and night’s rest we set off to drive up the Furka pass up to the old Belvedere Hotel at the Rhone Glacier for lunch then on to Grimsel and Oberwald. The drives aren’t terrifically long

Morning came around and after breakfast (früstück) said our goodbyes, packed up the car and off we went, driving on our homeward leg. Our first stopover was to be Stüttgart, which we have never visited before. We would be driving on small roads through Switzerland, before crossing the border back into Germany and onto the Autobahn a journey of around 300Km or so. We arrived at our Hotel in late afternoon, this small family run hotel had a superb restaurant which we used every night of our stay. The Porsche would be parked up for a day as we used the SBahn into the city. Stüttgart is a more modern city built on hills. We enjoyed walking around the city, which has a massive commercial shopping area and several markets.

The weather was kind to us so we were able to enjoy our afternoon meal outdoors. The following day we took the Autobahn to Shaufenhaussen to the Porsche Museum. On arriving we followed the Porsche Strasse following the Porsche factory buildings to the Plaza and in front of us was the amazing museum building. The museum has its own underground carpark complete with servicing and valeting services. I was very impressed with this as car parking spaces were large enough to leave plenty of space between your neighbours. This was an amazing place full of Porsches and we hadn’t even got into the museum yet! The car parking and museum entrance fees were very reasonable. We spent the whole day here looking at the exhibits and taking pictures of the rare and immaculate cars. We were guided through the history of the cars’ development with an audio guide. There is also a restoration workshop which we could view the mechanics working on the current projects. The place is spotlessly clean and gives you a huge WOW factor. After having a very agreeable meal in the open air restaurant in front of the museum we wandered across the road to the massive Porsche Dealership to view the latest cars for sale, just an incredible place! There is also a factory tour on offer, which we could book, but since we had run out of time will definitely leave this for a return visit. Well the holiday was almost over all that was left for us to do was to drive north to Brugge for a quiet day by the pool at our favourite hotel before heading over to the Port of Zeebrugge for our overnight ferry crossing. It all went too fast, so we are already planning for next year for another adventure.

Bristol & South Wales Region’s weekend at Simply Porsche Always willing to support events organised by TIPEC, numerous members of our Region planned to join the third Simply Porsche rally. Some of us decided to start the weekend off by meeting up at the Haynes Motor Museum and taking advantage of the special rate offered to TIPEC members and others decided to make their way direct to our hotel. With a £6 million refit under its belt, the Haynes Motor Museum is an amazing place with over 400 cars and bikes on display in stunning style, from some dating from 1885 to much more modern vehicles. All the cars are driven at least once a year to maintain them in working order and lots of our members found it to be a nostalgic trip down memory lane. A few members remembered learning to drive in some of the cars on show and even owning some of the models! After a good look around the museum we headed for our hotel in Southampton where we would be staying overnight – only about a 20 minute drive from Beaulieu. After a not too early start, we arrived at Beaulieu ready for the gates to be opened. Being at the front of the queue, just before 9:30am we were duly summoned to drive up to the entrance gates where we paid our entry fee and, after explaining that we had twelve cars from the TIPEC Bristol and South West Region who wished to park together, were directed up into the arena. This was great as we were able to display our members’ pride and joys to their best. We had an eclectic mix of cars on display with models ranging from a 1977 Carrera Targa through to a 2015 Cayman GTS. A couple of other members joined us in their cars during the day and managed to park with us in the arena, with Tony parking his 928 in an impressive separate display of the marque. Beaulieu had 610 Porsches there this year, which is amazing. Hopefully as more and more people begin to hear what a great event it is, the fourth year will have even more wonderful cars to dream over. Thanks to the following members (hopefully I haven’t omitted anyone!) from our region who attended in 15 Porsches: Dave & Debs, Pete & Wendy, Andy & Sue, Geoff, Maryann & children, Martin & Jo, Norman & Jackie, Brian & Sarah, Graham & Catherine, Tony & Julie, Adam & Jen, Les & Charlea, Steve, Ted & Nigel … who all made it a great weekend with great company.

Club Treasurer Paul Bird organised the trackday in conjunction with Eddie and the team at Mazda On-Track and his intention was always to encourage drivers of all abilities to get involved.

Gary’s thoughts: “As a novice to track days I had a fantastic day, and it was well worth the five hour trip to the track. I had an absolutely great time, I cannot recommend this day enough.”

I’ll let some of those that took part share their thoughts in a moment but first there’s a few specifics to mention: we had two father/ daughter pairings on the day – Tony Levy encouraged his daughter Nicola to come down from Edinburgh to have some track-driving instruction from the Mazda On-Track guys in his 944, whilst Simon Kendal came along in his 996 Turbo and was happy for his daughter – 19 year old Jordan – to take his car on-track (I think she noticed the power difference compared to her Corsa!)

Paul with the 997: “What a great day! It was good to catch up with old friends and to make some new ones. If you have never done a trackday I recommend you book for this one next time, the track was never crowded and the standard of driving excellent. Thanks all of you that gave me some passenger laps, it was really good to go round the track in different cars back to back and see the difference in them!”

The entry list started with budget 924s and finished with a diesel powered Panamera, with a good selection of front, mid and rear engined cars inbetween. Blyton’s irrepressible owner, Richard Usher, was on hand all day offering sage advice and keeping an eye on proceedings whilst everyone else enjoyed what has to be one of the best little circuits in the UK. Adrian came over from Lancashire and said with a grin “Can I just say many thanks to TIPEC and its members for organising such an enjoyable event. I thrashed my little 924 mercilessly from start to finish …” Paul with the Panamera: “I did 14mpg on the track, bit of a shocker! If I can enjoy a track day in my diesel saloon then I’m sure a sports car owner would have a great time, we were all like kids in a sweet shop out there.”

Izzy enthused “Fantastic event for novice and veteran alike”, whilst Nick added “A brilliant day with a nice group of people. Sensible fast driving on the track – absolutely nothing to fear for novices like me.” Highly experienced trackday driver and club level racer, Darron, added “Blyton is much better than I remember it. A good little circuit …” Final words go to Paul Bird: “A big thank you to everyone that came along and helped make it a great day. Good to see that both novice and trackday veterans enjoyed themselves without any complaints about driving standards. Special thanks to the North West region for attending in high numbers! Also a big thanks to Mazda On-Track and Blyton Park for the organisation, marshalling and venue.” This has to be the best way to explore the limits of your car in safety and without risking your licence – those that didn't attend missed a great event. Perhaps reading all the positive comments and noting that some members travelled considerable distances to be with us (thanks guys and girls) might tempt more to join us in future.” Text & photography by Richard Sholl All Torque 112 page 21

Fuel Tank Renewal

Porsche Carrera 3.2 Work continues on Martin Whitelaw’s 911 Targa recreation, as featured in our last issue, with a replacement fuel tank. Shortly after recommissioning my Targa following a full respray I was increasingly aware of a smell of petrol in the cabin. Ignoring this for a while I finally accepted something had to be done when, after adding more fuel, the smell became quite unbearable. On closer inspection there was a trace of fuel wetting the lower half of the tank – I assumed the central seam joint must be leaking although it is impossible to see anything with the tank installed. Apparently this is common for cars which have sat for some time with partially filled tanks. Moisture above the fuel level can lead to internal corrosion and the central seam of a 911 tank is an ideal spot for this to occur. A new reproduction Dansk tank was ordered and preparations made to remove the old one. A new OE tank to body seal was included in my order.

There are several repair kits you can buy. Holden Vintage and Classic sell a complete treatment, consisting of degreaser, metal prep and tank sealant. I considered this route but not knowing the extent of my corrosion I elected to order a replacement aftermarket tank. (new OE fuel tanks are in the range of £1,200–£1,400 … ouch!) Good job I did as the original tank, whilst looking good elsewhere, was corroded badly externally below the near side tank seam. Apart from the top filler and vent connections the only other connection visible from the luggage area is for the fuel level sender and it was this aperture I used to access some 40 litres of petrol still in the tank. Using a borrowed all-plastic liquid pump and two 20 litre oil drums I emptied the tank in less than five minutes.

Thinking ahead I assumed the Dansk tank would come in basic primer so I ordered up some 3M Stoneguard to coat the replacement tank prior to fitting. Going underneath the car, the steel guard for the crossmember was removed to reveal the fuel pump and two connections on the fuel tank. The first is a low pressure hose feeding the pump inlet and the second a high pressure return from the engine. Hose clips on the pump inlet hose are easily dealt with but the 17mm compression fitting on the fuel return needed a little bit more caution.

Moisture above the fuel level can lead to internal corrosion and the central seam of a 911 tank is the ideal spot for this to occur.

Fuel pumped out through sender opening

After 30 years this fitting and adjacent steel pipe have seen better days and any attempt to just undo it might cause the pipe to fracture and necessitate the replacement of the entire fuel return line through the body to the engine end. Using a small wire brush and some release agent the 17mm nut and 14mm tank fitting were coaxed apart to be used another day. Next was the 21mm internal hex tank ‘sump plug’ which incorporates a gauze fuel filter. This filter is not fitted to the replacement tank, instead the new tank has a simple internal cylindrical weir arrangement which presumably traps any debris and retains it in the tank. This arrangement would appear to reduce the capacity of the tank by the height of the weir? Anyway, welding a 21mm nut to a spare 1/2" drive socket saw the brass plug/filter undone and any residual fuel drained out of the old tank. Looking inside the original tank you can see a much more complicated arrangement of baffles and enclosed filter housing – worth the extra £1,000? Time may tell.

With the underside fittings released I moved to the top side and removed the three tank to body clamps from inside the luggage area, removed the battery for better access and set about the top side fill and vent fittings. The latter, being jubilee style clips, were soon off and with the help of my trolley jack I carefully encouraged the tank to leave the car upwards. As can be seen in the photographs the recent change of body colour to signal orange did not include the luggage bay so after prepping the tank mounting area a coat of orange was applied (thankfully the front bodywork was in clean, rust free, condition – the remainder of the luggage bay will be masked off and similarly painted later).

The Dansk replacement tank was a tight fit so I took 2mm off the seams at three small areas to ease fitment. Apart from this and the differences in drain plug/filter area, previously mentioned, the Dansk tank is a well made piece of kit and should last for at least another 30 years. New OE foam seal fitted, the installation went well with only minor stud misalignment on the sender fitting to correct. No real problems then and the Targa was soon back on the road, vapour free. I even managed to reuse the tank labels relating to spare wheel usage. Total cost £231, job done. Post installation reaction – the tank sender fuel level moves about with motion more than it did before, and it may be reading slightly less than previously too. Otherwise good and the cabin is free of petrol smell!

Bore score nightmare Stuart Wakeman talks us through his 997 2S engine rebuild. I drive, no I am blessed to be able to drive, my 2006 gen 1 997 2S on a daily basis. I’ve had the car now for just over five years and have covered over 65k in mileage and have had some wonderful times with like-minded people from TIPEC. So much so that I am now one of the ROs for the Central region. My fuel consumption had dramatically risen over a number of months and I noticed a black cloud when pulling away from the traffic lights. Okay, I was a bit heavy footed, but the car was warmed up fully and I had only taken it up to 4,000 rpm. The following day I checked the oil via the electronic dipstick and the oil was on the last quart. I topped it up and and drove around over the weekend. On the Monday morning I re-checked the oil and again it was on the last quart. A quick top-up and on parking up at the office I phoned my usual mechanic, who said to check the nearside tailpipes and to check if they were sooty on the nearside pipes, more so than the driver’s side. The answer came to me when I compared my two hands … the left hand side was definitely more ‘blackened’ than the right. We agreed to get the car into his workshop ASAP for a bore scope inspection to piston six, as this area was the most likely for the cause of the soot and we both suspected bore score. It was squeaky bum time all day and for the drive home and again the following day over to Richard’s. A quick check sealed my fate as we saw that piston number six had suffered bore score. I was devastated. I was given a lift home and left with the realisation that my car was dead and gone or that I was going to be left with a huge bill. So I advised Richard I needed time to assess the situation and decide what I wanted to do. Numerous calls to the highly rated Porsche specialists left me with no illusion of what I faced … a bill likely to be £7k for a quick fix and between £10 to £12k for the bells and whistles. I needed to find someone whom could I trust to do the work on my budget. For me there was only one – Richard again at RSR Auto Services in Bromsgrove, who I trusted completely. If we were going to do this we were going to do it right - fixing the initial

failure and making sure any future issues with potential areas would also be addressed, including the IMS and RMS. It was agreed that I would manage the process, buying parts and materials where I could, and Richard would provide the labour. Whilst he concentrated on getting the engine out and stripped, I concentrated on the parts list. As a professional Buyer, I go shopping every day. My philosophy is, if you don’t ask you don’t get. With this mantra I spoke to all of the suppliers that the Porsche engine specialists use, to first get advice and then work on prices. Once this task was completed I put a call into Westwood Liners in Droitwich, the preferred choice for piston liners to the engine rebuild specialists and Parr Motorsport. Over the coming weeks the parts list started to build up, including two new pistons as no. four piston was also discovered to have suffered from bore score. New piston rings all round for the other four. A very insightful conversation with Opie Oils ended up with me ordering 30 litres of mineral running oil along with 20 litres of the Nano Drive oil for daily driving. Progress was painfully slow – well for me anyway. I had a new job to go to by now which started in weeks and I needed to be able to drive to it! A 70 mile daily round trip with no car … I never make life easy. A local engine specialist bored out the old liners and fitted the new Westwood ones. We replaced the IMS shaft, the RMS, all new timing chains and tensioners, new thrust bearing, new seals and gaskets all round, a new water pump, a stainless steel tandem pump cover from Ninemeister, as well as the two new pistons and rings all round. Oh and the low temp thermostat. I think that was it. Could I have changed the other four pistons? Of course. But again after speaking to the Porsche engine specialists, they advised that as long as they are not damaged, don’t bother. Mine were in good order and within Porsche tolerances, so I kept them. Richard performed miracles and the car was soon ready to drive. He picked me up the following morning to drive to his workshop and to carry out the first of the services

Rusty tandem pump at the bottom-right

required by the running in process given by Opie (first at 50 miles, second at a further 250 miles and a third after another 500 miles). The first was completed and off for a test-drive we went. On our return a quick check underneath showed all was good with no leaks. There did seem a little more brake pedal travel than expected, although the brakes worked well and the car stopped on a sixpence. We both suspected the tandem pump. A quick ring around located the nearest tandem pump at Porsche Reading. So off I went, the long way round. The car never missed a beat and I was careful not to take the revs up over 3,000 rpm. The dials were totally different with the low temp thermostat working its magic and the oil pressure gauge was higher due to the new crank shells. But I was impressed. Once back Richard performed the second oil and filter change as I’d covered 280 miles. We did not need the tandem pump in the end as we found that the fault lay with the alloy servo pipe. A swap for a new one and all was good. I’ve since completed the running in process, and another few thousand miles to boot. There was a very small oil leak where oil was coming out from a cam cover bolt and dripping onto the exhaust, creating lots of smoke and a burning smell every few days. Richard did his very best (again) and the car has been tip-top since. What have I noticed; the car is more responsive; so much so that I’ve had to learn its new characteristics, as it is a totally different beast. More involving, yes, but still a beast when and where required. How much did I spend? Only I know this for sure, but circa £8k. But considering I chose to replace far more of the engine components than I expected, and to be fair no expense was really spared, I think it was a bargain. What else have I learned? Everyone within the Porsche community will help when asked. Richard is the prime example. Without his expertise and dedication I would have nothing. Others to thank include Mark at Ramus, Opie Oils and all of the Porsche engine specialists for your patience and dedication to your work. Your advice was invaluable and greatly appreciated. I sincerely thank you all. Now I’m sodding off to drive it like I stole it. Text & photography by Stuart Wakeman All Torque 112 page 25

Matt supplied many of the company’s products for members at a very discounted rate and I have to say I have used Angelwax products for over 12 months now and they really do exceed all expectations, with excellent reviews all over the world including many awards from the likes of Auto Express. A big thank you to Matt and Donald for making it along and putting on a great evening.

It has been good to see members from the region submitting quality articles to All Torque. From one end of the scale with Martin Whitelaw’s recent 1970s 911 recreation and to the other Andy Bennett’s Cayman GTS article early on in the season. Keep the articles coming folks, everyone loves to read a project and tale whatever the era.

Please feel free to visit www.angelwax.co.uk for a full list of products and tips on all aspects of car detailing. Matt and the team from Angelwax have invited us along to his factory for a more in-depth look at his products at some point in the season. A great evening enjoyed by everyone thanks guys, it was a superb demo. Elaine and Martin Whitelaw recently put together a Sunday Lunch Run with detailed instructions for everyone to get from A to B. Finally after miles of navigation and wrong turnings we made it to Dirleton after a nice wee visit to various locations, and the

The season so far has been very well attended and membership has been strong – at present showing 92 with a few new members joining in recent weeks – which is very encouraging. I have to say as always the AROs are doing the region proud. Elaine Whitelaw is always very enthusiastic, as is James McLauchlan, and without you guys it would be a total nightmare for one individual to put together. A huge thanks and keep up the fab work. As for the members reading, we could not do it all without you guys and dolls, so keep on coming and we will keep on organising. We still have a few events to come this season, most of which are listed below . Please get in touch if you want any info.

Angelwax demo evening at the Scottish club night

Meetings are held first Monday of every month from 8pm at The Boatyard Inn, Bolton Road, Riley Green, Houghton, Preston PR5 0SP (01254 209841). When this falls on a Bank Holiday, we meet on the second Monday instead. As I’m sure it is for all regions, the North Westerners have been hard at it carrying on the momentum of spring into May and June. We’ve had a packed couple of months with hopefully something for everybody. Early May got the classic car show season off the ground with a number of members attending Gawsworth Hall on May Day Bank Holiday. It’s been a regular haunt this one for as long as I can remember. We always have a tidy but loyal group that make the pilgrimage to Macclesfield each year. Always a bit of a favourite. Our club night (which we hold on the second Monday after May Day Bank Holiday) had a little extra brain teasing thrown in. Richard & Dianne prepped a little quiz to keep everyone busy whilst we got down to business with events etc. Swiss Tony & Brian Butterworth were the worthy winners I believe. Wednesday the 20th of May saw a good old crowd up at the Jasmine Open Evening courtesy of Proprietor Brian Goff and his dedicated team. This has become one of the must do events of the year. The bling on show in the car park is always worth the journey alone. Again there must have been close on

100 Porsches. We enjoyed a hog roast, complimentary drinks, excellent raffle prizes and one or two managed some nice little trinkets, gratis, from the friendly Pagid representative on the night. For the second year TIPEC were invited to show an official presence alongside PCGB. This was an excellent shop window for us generating a good bit of interest on the night. Many thanks to the Jasmine team for their invite. Towards the back end of May, the region got involved in things a little further afield. Saturday the 23rd saw an excellent turnout to the nationally organised Blyton Park trackday in Lincolnshire. We had the largest turnout of cars and drivers, who all enjoyed their machines in complete safety without incident. One or two spins were had, but hey this is the place to explore you car’s limits! A big thanks to Richard & Dianne (997 C2S), Tony Levy and his Daughter (Track prepped 944), Simon Kendal and Daughter Jordan (996 Turbo),Pete Anderson (993 Carrera), Darron Wall (996 GT3 Mk 2), Adrian Tyldesley (924) Alan Aspden (911 3.2 Targa), Paul Downton (Lotus Elise) and finally Col Hammerton (924 Track Car). Without support for events like these they can lie in jeopardy, and it’s events like these that give our great club a good presence in the club scene, so thanks once again. The Sunday (24th) had a group go down to another event which is becoming a favourite, Porsches on The Prom at Llandudno. Poplar services was the meeting point for an fairly early run down to Wales. This event in the calendar really does bring out some tasty machinery so if you’ve never been make a note in your diary for next year. Not the sunniest of days but that doesn’t put the North West off from having a good run out. Early June (6th) got us over to the Fylde Coast for the Cleveleys Classic Car Show. We went as visitors last year, liked what we saw and reckoned we would have a bit more of a presence this time round. A sunny, if blustery, day got things going. We met up at The Villa Express near Kirkham, giving us about a 15 minute drive in. I was optimistic for a good turnout and the

region didn’t disappoint. We had 10 or 11 cars in attendance including new member Barry Jackson’s lovely 968 Sport. A nice addition to the line-up. Thanks to Mike Grimes for providing a splash of orange with his 964. The display was also made up of a 997 C2S, 997 Turbo, 996 Turbo, 997 Gen 2 C2S, 944 Lux, 928 S4, 987 Cayman & a 993 C4. You get a real diverse picking of cars at this event. There’s everything from Americana, including a Cadillac hearse, to Sierra Cosworths, Porsches (obviously) to Cavalier SRI’s. That car took me back to being a kid! A very well attended show which seems to work all the better as you have all the shops and café’s open for everyone to enjoy as well. I think we’ll definitely return for this next year. Friday the 19th of June saw a small but perfectly formed group of Pork enthusiasts head back over the Fylde for Fish & Chips courtesy of Knott End Chippy. I think quite a few people were tied up with work etc, so maybe we’ll have another run over there later in the year. Keeping up with the schedule in June saw 10 Porkers embark on our ‘Longest Day’ road trip to Portmeirion. It also turned out to be one of our longest trips in terms of mileage too! What started out as a discussion between Richard Sholl and Tony Levy over the last few months saw club regular Malcolm Poulson step in and organise a blinder of a run out. Malcolm had all the i’s dotted and t’s crossed which saw a Boxster S, Cayman, 997 C2S, 996 Turbo, 997 Turbo, 944 Lux, 2 993’s a 928 S4 & a 991 C2S meeting at Poplar Services at 7:00 am (we did tell you it was the longest day). The day started by Mal handing out printed directions and menu choices for our lunch stop. We then took a steady run along the M56 before getting to more interesting roads off the Motorway. Once past Queensferry things got a little more tasty towards Bala, then onto Cerrigydrudion, and Ffestiniog.

Porsches parked up around the village

There were some wonderful roads to sample, some of which, I dare say, had it not been for Malcolm’s organising, some of us would never have driven. The single track roads up over the hills after Ffestiniog were of particular note. However what we hadn’t accounted for were millions of cyclists on a road race after the aforementioned village. Thankfully they were all on the other side of the road, and I did feel a little sorry as you saw the pain on the faces of the competitors climbing up the hills that we gently breezed down! However the fun didn’t stop there. Once we arrived at Portmeirion and paid our club discounted entry fee, Malcolm had organised for us to take our cars into the centre for photos. I am reliably informed this isn’t just grated to all and sundry. After a lovely two or three hours sampling ice cream and taking pictures it was off to our Lunch spot at the Saracen’s Head Hotel in Beddgelert. This was just a steady drive over to what an excellent lunch. Again thanks to Malcolm’s organising we had phoned the choices through earlier in the day so waiting was minimal. Some local favourites were sampled including the traditional Lamb Cawl. Very nice. A run to Wales is never complete for us lot these days without a run round the EVO Triangle. This was executed with zest without being silly. A great set of roads which you should add to your bucket list if you haven’t done it already. Finally, late afternoon had Rosie’s Cider Brewery, not far after Corwen, playing host to us TIPECers. Again Malcolm had organised some sampling of various brews (all within the limits of the law) and a lovely buffet to accompany it. We retuned the offer by making several purchases of which I imagine some were cracked open later that night ... although I don’t think anyone was brave enough to try the ‘Extreme Dry’! After that some headed off home, some went for a coffee. All who attended were thrilled with the day and I know we have thanked Malcolm on Facebook but credit where credit is due, thanks again Malcolm for a great day. I hope we will have the pleasure again. That’s it for now. Please see below for more fun on offer. By the time you get this the cut-off time for Oulton Park Gold Cup club tickets will be imminent but you may have time. You can get in free with your car on the club stand for the whole weekend. Additional people are charged at the gate/online prices. Camping is available too for around £16 for the weekend. The Club Concours will have taken place so we’ll fill you in on the movers and shakers in the next All Torque.

On top of these events, a good few of the region meet at Mitton Hall for the Supercar Sundays (1st Sunday of the Month) and also Supercar meets at the Phantom Winger at Preston. These are held on the 3rd Sunday of the month all year round. Both are very popular informal meets to get you out of bed on a Sunday morning.

Can’t believe that we are at the end of June already! It has been a busy few months with a packed list of fixtures. Most recent of which was the trip out to Liverpool’s new ‘Cars and Coffee’ event, run by Normal Shum at his Chung Ku restaurant on the waterfront. Norm is well connected in Porsche circles with Stuttgart’s finest being the prominent marque on display. The first meeting even saw a new 918 in attendance. It disappeared mid morning in a whirr of electric silence! A group of us attended the ‘Inside Classics’ event at the Tollemache Arms, near Tarporley on the 25th Jun. This meeting was hosted by Fuzz Townshend and Carole Nash Insurance, with the club well represented on the night. Good food (including a hog roast) was laid on during this informal gathering, with the weather bringing out a nice range of cars.

‘Inside Classics’ event at the Tollemache Arms

Our thanks go to John Holland and Danny Fitzsimmons at Unit Eleven Porsche Specialists, who opened their doors to the club so that we could hold our June cub meeting at their premises. The hospitality was second to none. The lovely weather bought a wide variety of cars out, with over 30 Porsches in attendance, including a 993 RS, a 964 RS, a 911 anniversary edition, a 914, 930 flat nose and a 944 that has been converted into a track car by unit eleven, to name a few. Some members had their cars on the ramps and the helpful crew at Unit Eleven had a look over them. It was a good evening with nice people and nice cars.

like a Wimbledon shield! The award was received by club members Gareth, Chris and Stefanie, and has been displayed with pride at several subsequent meetings. Looking forward to next year’s event.

Tatton Park Classic and Performance Car Show saw a good turn out of cars on both days on our club stand. A highlight was seeing two of the ten UK 911 Celebration Targas together ‘the twins’. Spirits were kept high even with the show of rain on Sunday. There were 18 Cars in attendance on Saturday and 17 on Sunday – thank you to all that supported this weekend. This event saw the club win another award, the second in two consecutive weeks.

Some club members joined the NW region in May for a drive to Llandudno for Porsches on the Prom. A few of us stopped off at one of our member’s cafe just outside Llandudno for breakfast before heading onto the promenade. Again there were various models of Porsche on display – old and new, making the view on the promenade spectacular.

A number of the region’s club members attended the Weaver Wonder 100 mile charity navigation run, ran by Nantwich Rotary Club. A fun filled day was had by all who participated, no major wrong turns happened. Special thanks to Chris in his 968, who spotted the hidden post box thanks to the BMW driver who was hiding it! Once back at the finish point, TIPEC Cheshire and Staffs were awarded Best Club Representation. The trophy looked

Our May club night saw a good turnout of 20 people joining us at the Whipping Stocks for a talk about LED lighting from Steve Jones of Woodypeck. He answered many questions and has a broad knowledge of LED bulbs for our Porsches. His company also manufacture reproduction Porsche 928 boot covers, which he brought along to let us see – the quality of which is as good as factory.

Looking forward to the next few months, there is still plenty on the calendar. If you are interested in the factory tour/museum trip, please let Dave Watson know ASAP. We need numbers in order to confirm hotel arrangements. Finally a quick welcome to all our new members. If you have not already provided your email address to Dave Watson or Stefanie Mahan, please forward details so that we can add you to our circulation list for events.

21st Jun saw us get together at the Trentham Gardens Classic Car Show, we had a turn out of nine Porsches, with a further five from central region. We had a lovely backdrop of Trentham lake to our stand with many admiring our cars. The weather stayed dry and we were also able to have a wonder around the 900+ classics on display. May 4th (Monday) Classic Car show at Thorsby A regular for members with a reasonable turn out, considering there was another event the same day. May 9–10th (Saturday–Sunday) Prescott Hill climb and tour Another great weekend organised by the Bishops Cleve Rotary. Not so well attended this year by our region, at least Ray saved on rounds of drinks. May 10th (Sunday) Newby Hall / Cars in the Park Four cars from SYNN region made the drive up. A good show with plenty of nice cars scattered around the grounds and nice tour around the house. May 23rd (Saturday) TIPEC track day at Blyton Just Dean attending this year’s track day in his GT3. Another great event organised by Paul Bird & Co. and very lucky with the weather again. Took a few Passengers out in the track beast and put some smiles on Molly’s & Pauls faces. Blyton Park is a great circuit to start with if you’ve never had your Porsche on a circuit, hopefully we can get more SYNN members to the next one. May 31st (Sunday) Porsches at the Spa Another well organised event hosted by PCGB R7. After an enthusiastic jaunt through the countryside there was dedicated parking outside the Spa at Bridlington. Plenty of different models on show, and even one Maserati, which pleased Katharine. June 5–7th Simply Porsche Weekend, Beaulieu Three couples made the drive down to The New Forest with Dean, Jo, Dave and Anita staying a lovely B&B in Lyndhurst and Paul & Linda staying in a rather posh hotel in Brokenhurst. The drive down was made more leisurely with a drive down the Fosse Way on the Friday morning. The rest of the day was used to explore the local areas and to finish was a great night at a 16th Century thatched pub/restaurant ‘The Waterloo Arms’ in Lyndhurst. Saturday involved a drive out to Mudeford (a lovely fishing village), Southbourne and a walk around Poole. The evening was a jaunt over to Brokenhurst for a cracking meal in the Porterhouse steakhouse, washed down with a good few beverages! Sunday was the big day at Beaulieu, beautiful weather, 100s of Porsches, Abbey, monorail, gardens, car museum, Top Gear props/cars ... it had it all, and in a beautiful area too.

June 10th (Wednesday) Renishaw Hall Classic Car & Bike Show This event gets bigger and bigger, a queue of cars from the main road at three o’clock, by the time we got in and managed to find a parking spot the place was heaving. Another superb event for good causes, must get there earlier next year. June 20th (Saturday) SYNN Dining Sixteen of us sat down at E’lupo’s Rotherham, only a small venue from the outside but managed to get all our meals out at the same time, a plus as far as I am concerned. Very nice fresh Italian meals at a reasonable cost, we will do this one again, highly recommended. June 28th (Sunday) Fun Day and Fete at the Old Bell Started at Respect Bawtry for a run to the Old Bell where we had a reserved parking area, lots of fairground activities including a Helter Skelter (Ray had two goes ... big kid at heart). After a couple of hours the convoy moved on to the Hop Pole at Retford for an informal classic car show bathed in sunshine. Future events include: August 2nd (Sunday) SYNN Region Concours Pride of Ownership time again at the Bell from 3pm. Come and display your pride and joy and talk Porsches, behind the Old Bell car park, the monthly meeting will be later at 6pm. Meetings are held second Monday of every month 7:30pm onwards at The Bull’s Head, Birmingham Rd, Shenstone, Litchfield WS14 0JR. www.vintageinn.co.uk/thebullsheadshenstone I write this on my return from the Shenstone Village Car Show, I was approached in the pub car park at our last meeting by a gent, (I can already read your minds, but no its all above board) who invited us to the annual local village show. I turned up to this quaint show and met up with Chris, a new member who is carless at the moment and together we spent and afternoon looking at the most eclectic range of classic cars, ranging from rare type 58 Bugatti to an Austin A35, the one with the larger rear window, to a Series II Land Rover. Apart from my 911 there was an almost new Cayman S – the owner will hopefully pop along to our next meet. We are looking into August now with Sunday 9th being a choice of Transtar’s Shugborough Hall show, or a run down to Prescott Revival with our friends from the Marcos club. Hill runs should be booked through www. marcos-oc.com, but be quick as they sell out quickly.

In June our region joined the throng for the Simply Porsche weekend; Peter, Andy Elvers & I drove to the Haynes Motor Museum for the Saturday visit followed by a well-planned tour back across country to the New Forest. On Sunday morning we were up bright and early for the pre-Beaulieu gathering at Hatchett Pond; the setting was stunning in the bright weather, the only risk was the dry gravel kicking up dust on all the freshly detailed machinery! No doubt there will be lots of Beaulieu reporting in the issue, so enough from NLHSE.

Meetings at the ACE Café and Goat have been well attended with big turnouts during the better weather. In May we had a good turnout for the Spring Classic meeting at Duxford in Cambridgeshire; the event was coordinated with 928.org and early arrivers met at the Red Lion Whittlesford for a full English before forming a convoy for the drive in to the event. A light shower on arrival didn't spoil what turned out to be a good day with plenty of cars to see and the museum exhibits available in the discounted ticket cost. We had some new members; Rodney Ayres brought his cherished 911 Targa Sport, low mileage and in great condition, a one owner classic. We were also treated

On the Monday morning following Beaulieu my 928 S4 got treated to a high speed run to Liverpool, where I viewed a rare S4 Manual; a quick visit to Loe Bank motors in Bury for test and inspection was enough to seal the deal, so my collection is now three 928s; the barn find ’86 S2 being brought back to life by Paul Lacey is now a runner and will hopefully be street legal soon; watch this space! The run back from Liverpool to London that evening really showed what 928s were built for, classic GT cruising! It has a massive car park as well as being large inside and the landlady has given us our own area both inside and in the car park. This one is a couple of miles closer to the motorway so even easier to get to. Partners are more than welcome and it is not all car chat. The venue does great, reasonably priced food so if you do not want to cook, you can have a meal before the meeting starts.

Over the day we watched some great cars try their hand at what is quite a tricky circuit. Comedy Club Brilliant evening, two great comedians and an MC. Food and a disco after all for £25 per head. Even the audience made us laugh. A few from SELNK did this one and had a great time. June club meeting This meeting coincided with Simply Porsche at Beaulieu so again a low turnout as quite a few of us made a weekend of it in the Southampton area. Simply Porsche This will be covered in detail elsewhere, but the SELNK group had a great weekend with a lot of us being there from the Friday. Fantastic weather, brilliant Greek meal Friday night, then the run out and pub on Saturday. Breakfast Club For the first time the weather was fantastic. These ad-hoc events are getting popular. The row of 10 parked Porsches looked fantastic. Excellent breakfast and a great chance to meet up. They’d started serving lunch by the time we left! August 2nd (Sunday) Goodwood Thoroughbred Sunday Being organised by Kevin Pharaoh this is a very early start to do one of Goodwood’s Sunday Breakfast clubs. No display for us we just park in the car park. But displayed will be a mix of pre-1966 cars and bikes. Meeting at Fontwell services at seven (I did say it was early!) Kevin is your contact on kpharo@aol.com August 15th (Saturday) Headcorn Air Display including Vulcan This is the last year of the only remaining flyable Vulcan being in the air. It will be doing a display at Headcorn which saves the trek northwards to see it. This will be an early start as it looks like it will be very popular. I’m trying to organise some club parking, so if you wish to attend contact me quickly.

We now have 70 people on the SELNK list and a lot of these Paul, Martin & I have never met. It would be great to see some of you in the forthcoming few months. There are some members that I don’t have email addresses for. If you have an email address and do not see mails from me, then please send me a mail to jim.hearnden@tipec.net and I’ll add you to the list. That also applies to people in adjacent areas who would like a copy of our calendar. Please also ensure that you update address, car and email details when you renew.

AND FINALLY Christmas dinner this year will be on Sat 12th December at Brands Hatch. This looks a great event, where we are ‘piggybacking’ onto a much bigger party. There will be a live singer, dancing lots of food and knowing SELNK lots of alcohol as well. Tickets are £66 per head and I need a deposit of £30 per head ASAP. We already have 30 booked and confirmed but a few spaces remain. A lot are staying at the Thistle Hotel which is a five minute walk.

May club meeting Quite a few of the regulars missed this meeting as we were in Germany for Dinslaken. I gather turnout was a bit low.

February 6–7th 2016 (Saturday–Sunday) After a brilliant Spa day earlier in the year Kim has organised another and has negotiated the same deal as 2015. The price is £150 for two people with one nights bed, breakfast, evening meal and entrance into the pool, spa etc. beauty treatments and alcohol are all extras. The 7th will be Jean & Andy Waters 40th Wedding Anniversary so celebrations will be required!

Motorsport at the Palace No not that Palace, this was at Crystal Palace which was a motor race circuit until the 1970s. This was an organised sprint with a lovely mix of cars. Held over two days, Martin had organised this one. Not the greatest of turnouts for this which was a shame as the weather was glorious and it was a great event. Martin had us parked near the tea bar and the circuit.

May 13–16th 2016 (Friday–Monday) Laon 2016 I know this is a bit scary but 2016 will be the 25th Year of Circuit Historique Du Laon This should be a fantastic event. Rooms are booking fast already so

location with breath taking views across London before being waved off with the Union Flag. The finish line was on Madeira Drive in Brighton. The start of May was our trip to the Isle of Man and there is a separate write up from me elsewhere in this edition covering that. Simply Porsche at Beaulieu on June 7th turned out to be a great success and Mick & I were sorry not to be there due to Mick being at a conference in Virginia, and me being invited along on a Partners Program. (Very enjoyable!) I was delighted when I saw that Debs had won the Star Prize – the Silverstone Experience and Spa – I hope Debs & Dave have a great time. The weekend after Beaulieu offered two events for our region – an invitation to Porsche Centre Bristol’s Brand Experience Day and the Rotary Club Cotswold Rally – both extremely well attended by us.

Arthur Jones takes honours at Beaulieu

Many thanks to Andrew and everyone at Porsche Bristol, plus the new Dick Lovett Bodyshop team for the guided tours and offers of many services at special rates for TIPEC members. (Please contact me if you need info on this) A couple of people even got quick free fixes on a scratch (Mick’s 944) and a windscreen stone chip (Conrad’s 996 Turbo). As always the sun shone for the Cotswold Rally and a wide variety of classics – old and modern – enjoyed the route from Berkeley Power Station to Oxfordshire and back. Well done Graham for organising this enjoyable event again.

Mick’s 944 Cabriolet

Off we go!

Whatever you do over the summer enjoy yourselves and I look forward to seeing the pics and hearing all about it. Eddie Bennett of Silvertune

Our club nights have continued to be well supported and the light nights have meant the chance to have a good look at cars in the car park, with some new additions being of interest. Richard’s bargain 944 – a project for him and his son – looks like a fabulous eBay purchase!

Meetings are held the first Thursday of every month from 7pm at the Post Inn, Exeter Rd, Whiddon Down, Oakhampton, Devon EX20 2QT www.thepostinnwhiddon.co.uk
