Chairman’s Chat I’d like to wish you all a Happy New Year, I know it’s the February issue but it is the first column of 2016. Many of you will be glad to see the back of 2015, especially those in the North who have had to deal with some seriously bad weather and major flooding at the end of the year. I hope you managed to get out and enjoy a drive over the festive period. I know that quite a few regions had organised drives over the New Year and Boxing Day saw over 50 people, including some TIPEC members, turn up from around the country to join a visiting Magnus Walker for a couple of hours’ driving over the Snake Pass and surrounding areas on a rather wet morning. For those of you that don’t read emails, look at the club forum or Facebook page, you may be surprised to see my face accompanying this column. Well, following the resignation of Jim from his position as Chairman last month, I have stepped up from Vice Chairman to Acting Chairman. Seeing as the last two people to write this column drove cabriolets, I thought it best that I did the same and promptly purchased a 2001 Boxster S. This somehow shares my one allocated parking space with my pair of 924Ses. For those of you old enough to remember the TV program Butterflies, our parking arrangements are very similar. The club’s last big event of the year was at the NEC Classic Motor. Paul Bird and his team of merry men (and ladies) set up and manned the club stand and I must thank you all for a fantastic job and also those who allowed their fabulous cars to be displayed. If you attended, I think you’ll agree that we had a wonderful selection of Porsches. Myself and Sean both spent the Friday and Saturday on the stand. It was my first time on the stand and I really enjoyed chatting with our existing members, new members and those who just loved the cars. Who knows, I’m sure many of those I spoke to will soon be behind the wheel of their first Porsche and will be getting that special feeling we once had. It’s not long until the club AGM, which will be held on Sunday 20th March at the British Motor Museum at Gaydon, J12 M40. Full details follw on the news pages. I hope to see plenty of you there. Trackday at Blyton Park July 16th (Saturday) Trackdays are one of the best and safest ways to explore the true performance of your Porsche (and yourself!) in a dedicated environment, and in the company of likeminded enthusiasts. Blyton Park is an exciting track with excellent facilities and plenty of run-off, located in Lincolnshire and easily reached form all parts of the UK. Boxing Day
BLAST Magnus Walker is probably the most famous Porsche enthusiast in America nowadays, with his collection of customised Porsches commanding the attention of Porsche magazines all over the world. He was back in his native Yorkshire over the holiday season, and put the word out that he fancied a bit of a drive … Dean Lancashire went along. An early start of around 6:00am isn’t great straight after Christmas but what lay ahead was well worth it. Magnus had arranged for us to meet at 8:00am at the Hammer & Pincers Pub in Ringinglow, on the edge of Sheffield. He didn’t know if he’d be met with five cars or 50, as the weather forecast was going to be a wet one. As Magnus arrived at 8:00am in his brother’s Amethyst Mk1 996, he found around 50 cars spread over the car park. I think he’d forgotten how hardy us Brits are. Some of his supporters had driven up that morning from London, setting off at 3:30am. One guy had even driven down from Edinburgh, with a 3:00am start in his 964 Targa. Now that’s some fans, as the pair of them had their drives home to do again later on in bad weather. There was great mix of cars including a Caterham, some Lotuses, lots of Porsches, Astons, Ferraris, Lambos, and even a brand new Ford Mustang. Magnus gave everybody time with photos in front of their cars, asking questions about their motors. He even fetched his mum along! She showed a lot of interest in the cars and is Magnus’ number one supporter, having just come back from the LA Motor Show where his latest creation was on display. At around 8:30 we were in our cars, heading over the Ladybower dams and over the Snake Pass into Glossop with the occasional stop for photos. Magnus had certainly got his timing right as we didn’t see another car on the Pass at that time in a morning. The drive was made more interesting in the rain as it was certainly a spirited run, with a convoy of 50-plus sports cars. The morning was finished off with breakfast in Glossop at the local Wetherspoons where there was plenty of parking for all the cars and time for more photos. Thanks to Magnus and his brother St. John for great event. We’re hoping to the repeat the drive in the summer of 2016. He’s certainly just a normal Yorkshire guy, living in LA with a huge passion for Porsche. CheeRS!

or Kat though as we had a coupé! My concerns of driving on the wrong side of the road and taking the roundabouts the wrong way were soon quashed; I managed to settle in to it all quite nicely.
Having planned our little trip for the better part of six months, the morning of the 19th September 2015 arrived with some pace. Andy, Helen, Paul, Dave, Kat and I all met up at Cobham Services at 7am in readiness for the journey to Folkestone which turned out to be the longest leg of our trip! Paul and Andy were in their Boxsters accompanied by my 996. Reliability was my main concern, followed by never having driven on the Continent before! We made it down to Folkestone in very good time, obeying the speed limit at all times … The Eurotunnel was fairly quiet and so our time slot was moved up by an hour giving us an extra hour on the other side. The journey under was nice and smooth with no issues
from the recent troubles at the ports to hinder our travel plans! On arrival in Calais, an easy drive off of the train and straight on to Dunkirk. The weather was looking great, the sun was out and the boys had their roofs down, then looming ahead were black clouds. The heavens opened and as we were at speed and had nowhere to stop, the Boxsters had no choice but to take in water! Luckily it was a rain shower that didn’t last for too long, however the water was running up Paul’s windscreen, over the top, straight into the cabin and onto both Paul’s and Dave’s lap! As for Andy’s Boxster, the rain seemed to keep out of the car, a slight aerodynamic difference between the 986 and 987 possibly – pleasing Helen of course! No damp seats or trousers for myself
Once in Dunkirk, we got a little separated at traffic lights, however we did manage to meet up at the train station where parking was abundant. We set off on foot to find lunch and have a walk around the town and beaches, taking in some history of the evacuation which took place between 27th May and 4th June 1940. A remarkable effort to rescue the Allied soldiers from the beaches and harbour. We had a good few hours in Dunkirk and it was then time to head onto our main objective which was Ypres, or Ieper as is the official name for the town, and what a town it is, absolutely stunning. We picked up a road from Dunkirk into Belgium, and well … bumpy would be an understatement. I think I suffered the worse as I have 19 inch wheels, closely followed by Andy with 18 inch wheels and Paul probably had the best of it with his 17 inch wheels. We all thought the cars would need a visit to the garage on our return to the UK for new drop links and coffin arms all round!
Surviving this, we all managed to make it to Ypres where we had a hotel booked on the edge of the main square. As we didn’t know exactly where this was, on approaching Ypres we decided to park the cars so that Andy, Paul and I could carry out a little reconnaissance mission to see where we needed to be. All three Porsches were parked up one behind the other and getting rather a lot of attention from passers by, people were even coming out of the cafés to have a look! Once we had found the hotel, literally just around the corner, it was time to park up the cars and check-in. There were three parking spaces alongside the hotel; they must have been saving them just for us! A quick freshen up and straight down to the bar for a well deserved beer for the boys and glass of wine for the girls – on the house too, lovely. At 7:15pm we decided to head on to the Menin Gate, only a 10 minute walk from the hotel. The Menin Gate is a memorial to the missing and dedicated to the British and Commonwealth soldiers who were killed in the Ypres Salient during the First World War and whose graves are unknown. The memorial is situated at the Eastern exit of

the town and marks the starting point for one of the main roads that led Allied soldiers to the front line. Reginald Blomfield designed the monument; it was built and is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, unveiled on 24th July 1927.
the second leg of our journey but not before a walk around the town and a visit to the Flanders Fields Museum which is situated in the heart of the town. I would highly recommend a visit if you are passing through or planning a stopover.
The road under the Menin Gate is closed every evening just before 8pm. Large crowds gather in silence to remember and buglers of the local fire brigade sound the Last Post to honour the missing. This ceremony has been taking place since 2nd July 1928, with the exception of the German occupation during the Second World War when the daily ceremony was conducted at Brookwood Military Cemetery in Surrey. On the evening that the Polish forces liberated Ypres, the ceremony was resumed at the Menin Gate. We all found this to be very moving and were lucky enough to experience an extended service on this particular evening. Dinner followed at a very nice Italian restaurant a few metres along from the Menin Gate, accompanied by a beer or two, it was then back to the hotel for another cheeky beer and then off to bed! A very full and enjoyable first day.
Our destination for Sunday was Pozieres, France. We had a couple of B&Bs (Gites) booked, however as there was a slight error with our booking this meant that Andy and Helen had to stay in a B&B just down the road from us. We set off from Ypres around midday after having a coffee in the square, the cars were loaded up and off we set.
Sunday morning … it’s time for breakfast, check-out and off for
Heading out of Ypres we picked up the N8 and drove through Hooge, we came across a cemetery, museum and restaurant and decided to stop for some lunch and wander around the cemetery and museum all of which was very interesting. Hooge is located within the Ypres Salient and is the site of an exploded mine crater blown in 1915, now filled in. After lunch it was onwards towards Armentieres and Bethune, we picked up the A26 towards Arras, but a Sat Nav malfunction somehow led the lead car of our party Northwards! Deciding to all stay together and
realising we were going the wrong way, there was not a lot we could do for about 30 kilometers as this was the next available junction to exit. So …we came off, turned around and headed back down the A26 in a Southerly direction towards Bethune and Arras adding a total of about 60 kilometers to our journey! Eventually passing Bethune and Arras we picked up the A1 to Bepune and then on towards Albert. Pozieres is a little village situated about a ten minute drive from Albert and famed for its windmill which was occupied by the Germans during the First World War as an observation and command post. The windmill was unfortunately destroyed by French and British artillery, and the residents of Pozieres are
currently trying to raise enough money to rebuild the windmill. After a petrol stop, (the first one of our journey I might add), Andy and Helen parted company and headed on to their B&B. Paul, Dave, Kat and I found our little two night stopover just off the main road towards Contalmaison, a lovely B&B called Butterworth Farm, named after an English composer, George Butterworth. George joined the army as a Private and later became an officer, a Lieutenant with the 13th Battalion Durham Light Infantry. As part of the 23rd Division, the 13th DLI was sent into action to capture the western approaches of the village of Contalmaison on The Somme. Between 16th and 17th July 1916 Butterworth and his men succeeded in capturing a series of

cloth out and clean his stunning black Boxster, something Paul and I decided not to do as that would have been the day lost – it’s like Pringles, once you pop you can’t stop!
trenches near Pozieres, the traces of which can still be found within a small wood. Butterworth was shot by a sniper whilst in a trench very close to the B&B building and died on 5th August 1916; his body has never been recovered. George Butterworth, aged 31, was awarded the Military Cross on 25th August 1916, we all felt naming the B&B after George Butterworth was a very appropriate gesture to remember him by. As we had lost an hour or so with our Northerly detour, by the time we got to the B&B it was getting late and our tummies were making all sorts of noises! We had made the decision to meet in the town of Albert, only a 10 minute drive away, to try and find somewhere to eat. Being a Sunday there was not much open apart from a pub
called ‘The Corner Pub’ and what great food it served, having had a good fill and a glass or two of the local beer it was time to call the day to an end, heading back to Pozieres and our B&Bs. Monday started bright and early, all having had a lovely breakfast provided by wonderful hosts and meeting some very interesting people around the breakfast table. Lots of stories of searching for ancestors lost during the Battle of the Somme, one of the main reasons that Helen and I wanted to make the trip to the Battlefields. Andy and Helen arrived at our B&B after having had their breakfast and we started to make a plan for our day ahead. Before setting out Andy decided to get the quick detailer and microfiber
Polishing complete and on foot we go, a lovely bright but chilly morning. We decided to walk to Pozieres Cemetery which is about a 20 minute walk from Butterworth Farm heading towards Albert. It was a most imposing sight on approach, overlooking The Somme battlefields with hardly a person about or a car passing by. On entering the cemetery gates not even a bird was singing, total silence. For me, this was an unexpectedly emotional hour as I had a relative, William Henry Bloyce, who was a Private in the Royal Berkshire Regiment 8th Battalion. William died on the 21st March 1918 and is remembered on panel 56; he was 35 years old and is still missing in action. We laid a poppy in remembrance and spent some time trying to take in the numbers of the missing, 14,000 casualties from the United Kingdom who have no known grave and who died on the Somme from 21st March to 7th August 1918. Far too many to comprehend! From here we decided to return to Butterworth Farm, a little game
of tractor spotting on the way to lighten the mood as I think we were all a bit on the quiet side after our experience at the cemetery. It was time to collect the cars and head on to visit the Thiepval Memorial, an incredible memorial to the 72,195 British and South African men who died in the Battle of the Somme between 1915 and 1918 with no known grave. Designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, the memorial was built between 1928 and 1932 and is the largest British battle memorial in the world. From Thiepval we drove onto the village of La Boisselle to visit the Lochnagar Crater. The Lochnagar mine was dug by the tunnelling companies of the Royal Engineers under a German field fortification known as Schwabenhohe, in the front line, south of the village of La Boisselle. The mine was named after Lochnagar Street, the British trench from which the gallery was driven; the mine was sprung at 7:28am on 1st July 2016. The two charges of the Lochnagar mine created a vast crater of 300 feet in diameter, 70 feet deep and is the largest crater ever made by man in anger! The explosion obliterated 400 feet of German dug-outs, this sector was assaulted by the Grimsby Chums and Pals of the 10th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment;
the crater has been preserved as a memorial where a service is held on the 1st July each year. From here we drove into the village of La Boisselle, we found a lovely little café and decided to make this our afternoon lunch stop before heading back into Albert. Albert is a charming town with a square and the Basilica of Notra-Dame de Brebieres. The top of the Basilica was partially destroyed in January 1915 and by 1918, during the German occupation, it was completely destroyed by the British to stop the Germans from using the tower as a machine gun post! The Basilica was totally rebuilt to its original design after the First World War and was open to the public when we arrived in Albert, so we thought it would be rude not to pop in and have a look around. Stunning would be an understatement. From the Basilica we decided to visit the Abri (Shelter) Museum which houses souvenirs of the war. It is sited within underground shelters which served as protective bunkers for the residents of Albert during aerial bombardments in the Second World War. This turned out to be a very thought provoking, full on but enjoyable, day. the only thing left was to visit the ‘Corner Pub’
as this was the only eating house open, enjoy a few beers and have a few laughs before driving back to Pozieres. Tuesday, our last day, started as nicely as Monday, bright but with the chance of rain slightly further north. Our plan for today was to visit Vimy Ridge and find a lunch stop before driving on to Calais. The drive to Vimy was lovely, traffic free, although the weather did turn on us and the heavens opened for our visit to Vimy. The Battle of Vimy Ridge was a military engagement and was part of the battle of Arras; the main combatants were the Canadian Corps of four divisions against the three divisions of the German Sixth Army. The battle took place between 9th and 12th April 1917. The Canadians suffered heavy loses totalling 10,602 casualties, the quantity of the German losses are unknown. The Canadian National Vimy Memorial is Canada’s largest overseas war memorial, located on the highest point of the Vimy Ridge. Soaked through, cold and hungry we decided to head into the town of Lens to find lunch, and after working out the parking meters, (well done Dave), we found a little restaurant. Unfortunately they didn’t speak any English and I
know very little French. Andy and Helen had the legs on the rest of us with regards to the French language and managed to work out the menu to some degree! Most of the people we met during our trip spoke very good English and we found everyone to be polite and friendly The roads …well … maybe we need to be taking a leaf or two out of their book. France anyway, not so sure about Belgium! Smooth, un-congested, you sure could clear the cobwebs out of those lovely flat six engines! Obviously, we didn’t do that; we kept to the correct speed limit at all times! After having had a very lovely little lunch stop and a walk around Lens it was time to fire up the Porsches for the last stage, back
to Calais and then home. A cheeky wine stop in Calais first of all, how many boxes of wine can you fit in the front of a Boxster … Andy? On arrival at Calais we had time for a coffee before boarding a slightly earlier train back than planned as it wasn’t very busy. A perfect journey back under the water, off the other side and then what a joy … the M25! My total mileage for the trip was 545 miles, I set off with a full tank, topped up in Pozieres as was down to a quarter of a tank, and had plenty of juice for the trip home. NEC Classic 2015
From November 13–15th TIPEC displayed at the NEC Classic. The NEC Classic is probably the high point of the classic car calendar for many and a great way to wrap up the events for the year prior to Christmas dinner with the Club. I am always lost for words at the preparation that goes into the cars before the show and this year was no exception with seven immaculate cars on our stand representing the variety and quality of Porsches within our club.
Thanks, in no particular order, to Byron Humphries (964), Phil & Clare Hughes (928), Dave Watson (Slantnose 911), Kevin Tocher (996), Jarrod Mollison (3.2), Cavan Hulbert (944) and the guys at Pro-9 for the loan of their 914 race car. Without your support, commitment and efforts we would not have a display so I am hugely grateful. I am delighted that we managed to have four different regions represented and I think we all enjoyed meeting old friends and new over the three days of the show. Welcome to the 39 members that joined up at the show and those that took away details and signed up in the days after the show was over. Please get involved with your region and maximise the fun you have with your car – that’s what TIPEC is all about! Lord Vader marched onto the stand at one point with Stormtroopers and took some prisoners but thankfully they were released later. ‘May the Porsche be with you’ in 2016.

That sort of comment can’t go unexplained, so Jim Tarrant pushed him for more details and a few photographs from that day many years ago.
were standing still … apparently the RSes were doing 140 mph. So now I know what a really, really fast car is like. No heeling movement on corners, brakes that stop on a sixpence and acceleration like a space rocket – oh, and as uncomfortable as hell!
The 962 was privately owned by a clothing company and arrived in its own 40-foot articulated truck. The owner allowed us all to go out for a spin and had brought a professional driver down to pilot the machine for us.
Interestingly after I had said to the driver that the reverse camber corner at St.Marys was a bit damp, he eased off as we approached. I was relieved as this was where Stirling Moss had his bad accident.

Au revoir for now 2015 has seen lots of changes within TIPEC’s South East region. The biggest change was when their Regional Organiser Derek Flanagan decided to finally call it a day, standing down after a record breaking 23 years in the role. Derek is the proud owner of every single copy of the club magazines and has around 600+ Porsche models. That is his excuse for moving out of the area to find a new house big enough to display them – quite a challenge! He boasts a phenomenal library of information and knowledge on Porsches, which has proved to be an invaluable asset to the club over the years. During his term he has owned three Porsches: a 944S for nine years, a 968 for two years, and a 996 Targa for 12 years.
Derek, one of the few remaining co-founder members of TIPEC with the Member Number 0076, is also the founder for our South East region. Keen to prove it, he was proud to tell me he still has the founder T-shirt somewhere in the depths of his wardrobe. His membership has seen many faces come and go over the years, but that’s only to be expected from the second longest serving member in our club. I remember first meeting Derek at the TIPEC stand at the Goodwood Festival of Speed back in 2010. I was thinking about becoming a member. He and his good friend Terry didn’t have to do much convincing to get me to join up and I, like other members, always warmed to his good humour and knowledge. He has contributed an outstanding amount to the club and was key in organising many events and car shows, such as our presence at Goodwood and the Capel Classic. This did get him into some scrapes, like at last year’s Capel Classic when he was literally left holding the baby. My personal favourite – his in-depth views on 964 engine bays! During his long service history, he also became a member of the TIPEC committee as Communications Director. He did that for over 12 years, during which time he established the Rules & Constitution of the club, something the club as a whole relies upon to this day. Derek says, “I have enjoyed working with six Chairmen (plus one caretaker Chairman), eight Secretaries, five Treasurers, and an amazing 17 magazine editors – all of whom have had their own unique characters Text & photography by James Garrard All Torque 115 page 16
and style.” Derek has also been a committee member through the four club name changes – 924-944 Club, 924-968 Club, Porsche Enthusiasts Club (PEC), and The Independent Porsche Enthusiasts Club (TIPEC).
Because of his efforts and contribution to TIPEC for so many years the management committee decided, in 2013, to award Derek with a TIPEC Lifetime Award for services to the club. Something which, believe you me, has been very well earned. Derek will be continue to be a member of TIPEC, but will now predominately be attending Bristol region. We wish him a very successful move to the West Country and a great deal of thanks for all his hard work over the years. We know you will pop back and see us from time to time, so this is Au revoir and not Adieu from his South East friends.
Derek has used seven different venues during his reign as SE Region RO. He organised our stand at Goodwood Festival of Speed for 15 consecutive years (that’s a pretty mean feet to achieve on its own!) … and organised 15 Weekend of the Year breaks for SE members, which inevitably meant at some point on the trip he would get lost or find himself doing his ‘photo stance’, much to the amusement of other members.
Derek moving leaves some pretty big boots to fill and this means that ARO and TIPEC Communications Director James Garrard has taken over the role of RO for the South East Region. “I am humbled and proud to have know Derek for the six brief years of my membership. What I didn’t expect to find, when I first joined up, was a really good friend. It has been a real privilege and an absolute honour to have worked with him as ARO..”

Well we are in to the New Year already and the January meet proved very positive with lots of ideas for the forthcoming season. The January meet is always a brainstorming session and I have to say a lot of good suggestions were thrown about including a few old favourites. The annual BBQ and Trophy day is a must and we will for sure carry that tradition on. A trip up North was suggested and a few good options are available to us including a possible visit to Skye. A track day or evening visit to Knockhill sounds good as it’s been a while since the region did anything in that line. A technical day at one of the Independent Porsche Specialists was also mentioned and not to forget a possible visit to Angelwax our trusted premier detailing company here in Scotland. All in all many many suggestions flying about and I would hazard a guess we wont get to host or attend them all but we will have a dam good try! A good 10 of us or so are going to Essen in Germany this coming April, 7–10th, for what is the largest classic car show in Europe. I did email details etc. on
that trip just before Christmas. Anyone wishing to go please contact me directly and I will tell you the script on flights etc. Keep the suggestions rolling in and between the February and March meeting we will finalise the region’s diary of events and send them out via email as well as post them on the TIPEC.net website under Gruppe North. Please remember it is you club and your suggestions we put in place each season, so get your thinking caps on and get typing. The suggestion forms are out to everyone on email and copies are available at each monthly meeting. I will have the SVVF book available at the February meeting for people to scan through events on in Scotland for 2016.
Also at the January meeting was the subject of RO and ARO positions. Anyone can nominate themselves for these roles within the region and for the 2016 season Elaine Whitelaw and James McLaughlin have decided to stand down as ARO East and West for the region. Elaine and James will still be very active members and feel it is the correct time to hand over the reins to someone new within the region. Both Elaine and James will spend more time with family, in particular grandchildren that have recently arrived within each of there families. So it gives me the opportunity to thank them both hugely for their commitment in the past few years. Both Elaine and James were and still are very enthusiastic and positive in all the region’s
activities throughout each season and are always doing great things. I will stand as RO for the region once again, with the members blessing of course. The formal nomination process will be done at the February meeting. This gives time for people to come forward and have a think about being an RO or ARO within the Scottish region. The Christmas bash at the Dirleton Hotel in East Lothian in December was a fantastic night out. For me personally, probably the best Christmas bash I have attended with the region. We had a section of the Hotel all to ourselves and the meal, food and accommodation were simply first class in every respect. Elaine and James did a fantastic job putting the evening together what with carol singing and a Christmas quiz with good quality prizes available. Well done to Ian and Val the quiz winners (a right pair of brain boxes those two are ...) We have provisionally booked the Hotel and all the rooms again for this year and I will send a separate email surrounding Christmas for 2016 once we have made a final decision on where everyone wants to be within the same venue. Everyone that had a fair travel to Dirleton said it was well worth the trip and would do it all again without question. Enough chatter from me, back to you – the members. Please keep suggestions rolling in . We look forward to seeing you all in the 2016 season either at a club night for some banter and chat or one on the many events/ days out we will have through the season – there will be many as per usual! When this falls on a Bank Holiday, we meet on the second Monday instead. There's never a dull moment in the North West region and we ended the year in fine style. Our last Friday Chippy Tea of the year in November saw 24 of us sitting down at Banny’s at the end of the M65. The weather was awful but the turn-out was brilliant and the staff at Banny’s looked after us well, even managing to sit us all together on one rather long table. Our Christmas lunch in early December saw us back at Mitton Hall in the heart of the Ribble Valley. Again, the staff at Mitton looked after 23 of us very well and I believe that everyone enjoyed their afternoon – especially those that braved the floods in Cumbria to join us. Special thanks to The Hammerton family for laying on a pre-dinner meet at their house and for priming us all with mulled wine and seasonal delicacies. It was great to see some of our very youngest members and some of our more, er, senior members on the day. The December meeting at The Boatyard included our annual quiz, this year hosted by our new ARO, Colin. There were a few moans and groans about how difficult some of the questions were but, as Colin delighted in telling everyone “they’re only difficult if you don't know the answer ...” Both Adam at Porsche Centre
Bolton and Brian at Jasmine Porschalink were kind enough to provide Porsche related prizes and many of our members bought along wine, cake, chocolate and brake-caliper paint to add to the prize pool. It was a busy evening with a few new faces too. By the time you read this we should have held our New Year Drive on January 3rd – we’ll report on that in the next All Torque. Looking forward to 2016, we already have quite a number of events scheduled, starting with our February meeting at The Boatyard on Monday 1st. The first of our monthly Friday Night Chippy Tea/Friday Feast runs is on the 19th of February. There’s the March meet at The Boatyard on Monday 7th and on the 11th of March, a Friday, it’s the annual Porsche Only track day at Oulton Park. This year one or two of our members are booked onto the event and there’s bound to be a few of us spectating as well. It’s always a good day out. On April 10th we’re holding our second Charity Pet Food Run. This was a successful event for us in 2015 and we’re hoping to build on that this year. We’ll be supporting Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary again and it would be great to fill the ‘inner’ car park at Bleakholt with Porsche cars on the day. I would like to thank Gareth Aldridge and Stefanie Mahan who have shown great enthusiasm and have been excellent Assistant ROs and a huge support to myself. Progress at ‘the workshop’ has been slow and steady with my early 928 now running again thanks to Santa’s helpers, Ian Highfield and Gareth Aldridge! Ian also set to work on Gareth’s 924 Carrera GT replica, though it looks to be down on power currently. We are likely to hold another ‘bring a spanner’ workshop day in the spring. As I write this, some 32 folks are confirmed for our New Year’s run and lunch into the Peak District on 3rd January. We changed the meeting point to Tesco Congleton as advertised on the club website, Facebook and our email circulation list. The girls enjoyed a spot of shopping, the boys a few drinks in very busy pubs, then more drinks, followed by a beautiful tapas meal at The Ambiente restaurant with lots of flights of various sherries. I wasn’t a fan of sherry but it certainly went well with spicy tapas food. Shame we couldn’t get more interested, it was

Our aim in 2016 is to meet up with other TIPEC regions either at an event or on one of their days out as well as giving our club members lots of opportunities for days out. Christmas lunch at the Shepherd & Dog, Forward Green, was well attended by 15 members, including a surprise visit from Sally & John Butcher. John is supposed to be resting after a knee replacement, which was probably needed due to a heavy clutch on his 912! Thank you Yvonne for organising this event it was much appreciated by all.

Third Saturday (Porsches only) 12 noon at the SE side of Smithfield Market, London EC1A 9LH, parking in the closed loading bays opposite Smithfield Café. Last Monday 18:00pm (Porsches only) at ACE Café, Ace Corner, off the A406, Stonebridge, London NW10 7UD. Our monthly meets a the Goat and ACE Café continue through the darker months, with good turnouts as long as the weather is dry. Peter and I met at a rainy Goat on Sunday morning, the 4th of January, with the weather deterring all but the dedicated. We put our thoughts to the forthcoming year and events we will look to attend in addition to our monthly regulars: The final meeting of the year at the ACE café on 28th December was so well supported the parking spilled onto the street, helped by it being a bank holiday. On New Year’s Day I joined TIPEC South East for the Brooklands open day; a fantastic show of cars early on the morning, bearing in mind the New Year’s Eve celebrations. We met up in a local supermarket car park so that we could arrive together and get block parked; if there is interest from NLHSE members we could add this fixture to our annual events. On Tuesday 8th December at 6:30pm Peter & I attended the launch party for the new 911 Carrera and Carrera S at the Porsche Centre Hatfield. They always pull out all the stops, with champagne flowing freely,

There were many interesting cars to view as well as the new 911s, the best of those was a Le Mans Prototype LMP1 919 Hybrid weighing in at 870kg with a 2,000cc V4 twin turbo of 500bhp plus an engine generator unit of 400bhp. There were also a lot of people viewing a gorgeous Porsche 918 Spyder in the adjacent car park, apparently belonging to a guest attending the launch.

For the record the new 911C and 911CS are both powered by 3,000cc flat six twin turbo units developing 370 and 420bhp respectively, each of course faster and more frugal than before.

Bodywork has been revised and updated front and rear, especially noticeable are new rear light designs and a duct at the rear. Care was taken at the launch not to mention the word ‘turbo’ when referring to the new models as that, we were told, would be coming next year.

We had a great turnout of 23 people for our last Friday night meet at The Horseshoes. It was a great way for us to start our reign as joint ROs and we were pleased by the support we received and in particular with regards to the change of day and venue. In future we will be meeting at The Carpenter’s Arms, Hadlow (see details above) on the first Monday of the month. Our first meet at the new venue was on January 4th, when we held our annual charity raffle, the main prize for which was a model 918 very kindly donated by Porsche Centre Tonbridge. On Saturday 12th December we held our annual Christmas bash and to celebrate SELNK region’s 10th anniversary, we decided to push the boat out. 32 of our members dressed up to the nines and attended the Christmas Grand Prix Ball at Brands Hatch. It was a wonderful evening consisting of a champagne reception followed by a three-course meal, cabaret entertainment and disco. By the end of the night we had lost quite a few of our members in the rooftop champagne bar! Most of us stayed at the hotel which was just a short walk away and the breakfast the next morning was a lovely end to the celebration. As this was a very popular event we are looking to run it again in 2016 and will advise you of the date as soon as information is available.

I hope Santa bought you all those nice Porsche goodies that you had on your wish list throughout the year, I was lucky enough to get a bulk load of microfibre cloths as my Son and friends know how much I like polishing! There are a few upcoming events for February; we have the London Classic Car Show running between the 11th and 14th February and the Porsche night at the Ace Café on 29th February. I believe that TIPEC do not have a stand at the Classic Car Show however, I am sure their will be a few familiar faces wandering around. 2015 was a good year with plenty of Porsche related things going on and the Tuesday evening meet at The Novello is always a good way to catch up with people if you are unable to join us at some of the events. The biggest change was at our annual Christmas meal, when our Regional Organiser Derek Flanagan stood down as RO after a record breaking 16+ years in the role. Derek, who is a co-founder member and one of the few who contributed to the TIPEC constitution, will be moving out of the area so feels no longer able to continue in his role. He has contributed an outstanding amount to the club over the years, with the running of the SE region. He was key in organising many events and car shows, like
Goodwood and Capel Classic etc, most of the WotY’s as well lots of magazine articles. He’s also one of the few members who have every copy of the All Torque magazine ever produced, and a phenomenal collection of miniature Porsche models along with an extensive library of Porsche knowledge. Derek will be remaining a member of TIPEC, mainly attending Bristol region’s events in the future. We all wish him a very successful move and a great deal of thanks for all his hard work over the years. He leaves some pretty big boots to fill and this means that ARO and TIPEC Communications Director James Garrard has taken over the role of RO. We also would like to take this opportunity to welcome on board two new AROs for the region. Eben Hugo & Bob Stephens have stepped up to the task. Eben, who is based in SW London, has a very strong passion for Porsches as well as a good sense of humour and Bob, who is based in Arundel, is a long standing TIPEC member and has been at management level before. Both will be assisting James with his duties. Members Cars Paul Steed and Emmett Jaques where involved in an accident to avoid a deer, which wrote off Paul’s acid green Cayman R on the way back from Porsche Mid Sussex 911/991 Gen 2 launch event. Despite a few cuts and bruises both are okay, and Paul is now looking for another limited edition Cayman when it comes out. David Henderson submitted this interesting view of his 944 Turbo. For our December club night, we had our annual Christmas meal. This year we had the best ever number of members turn up, 45 in total. We would like to thank Precision Porsche for the bucks fizz on arrival, and Porsche Mid Sussex for this years main raffle prize of a Porsche for the weekend, prize won by Jaga Kubit along with this years Regions Lotto prize draw of £20.00. Thanks also to Porsche Brooklands for all the other Porsche prizes for the raffle. Dan Engledow was awarded with this years Member of the Year award, (MotY) for outstanding contribution and attendance to the region. He was handed a certificate and prizes for his efforts by Derek at our Christmas meal. Club event at Porsche Mid Sussex On 16th December, celebrating the launch of the new 991 Gen 2, Mid Sussex laid on a full event with wine and nibbles for our members. Andy Crabb, (Centre Principal) also drew a raffle to help fellow club member John Page with a charity linked to his late father. The draw raised over £500 on the night. Prizes included a Porsche for a weekend, a Silverstone driving experience, and a half price service. A great turnout despite poor weather conditions. Good fun was had by all. Brooklands New Years Day gathering 2016 Despite a frosty early start, we had a handful of attendees, including Southern Region RO Andrew Fenwick and North London Region RO Vince Dallimore, as well as South East members Derek Flanagan, Terry Rockall, David Stevens, Colin Bonner, Lindsay Dobson and her husband Dave with Bambi. A record-breaking turn out this year, up by 40% on last year with over 1,550 cars on show, and 7,000 people in attendance. Some very stunning cars to be seen including a 918 Spyder. We also discovered a hidden talent of Derek Flanagan’s ... car detailing! Lindsay noticed a small scratch on her front wing, before you could say ‘bacon roll’ Derek was hard at it with the polish, much to the amusement of other members and passers by. July 2016 (TBC) Proposed visit to Porsche Leipzig factory. I am delighted to announce that following the success of our visit to Stuttgart this year, David Stevens has kindly offered to follow this up with a proposed visit to the Porsche Factory in Leipzig where they manufacture the Cayenne, Macan and Panamera plus a GT3 experience. Although we cannot book before February 2016, we do need an idea of names to establish whether or not this is a viable event.

Here are some extracts of an email I received after the event: “... for the fifth year running (my second), we turned up at Alveston House Hotel in Thornbury for our festive meal; 56 of us all in party mood. Although I’ve only been a member a little over two years, I have been amazed at how quickly Bristol TIPEC has grown and what a great bunch of people they are. It was also good to see that quite a few of us had turned up in ‘proper’ cars for our last 2015 event ... “Following the excellent meal Sue revealed how much we had made for the Air Ambulance this year, which was nearly £2,000 – a worthy sum for a worthy cause. She also thanked Porsche Bristol for the fantastic support they continue to show us as well as the great discounts they offer to members. Richard from Porsche Bristol had joined us for the meal and it was good to be able to talk to him about our cars and upcoming events (they’re holding a clinic in the New
Year where a few of us can get our cars up on the ramps to get a professional inspection). “We then had the annual raffle which as previously had an impressive array of prizes, donated by both TIPEC members, Porsche Bristol plus one or two others. “All too soon it was time to leave and I reflected that most of us join the club because of our love of the cars, but this purely social event is still one of the highlights of the year – proving you don’t always need to be behind the wheel to have a good time.” So for the Southwest & South Wales region we are already populating the calendar with some days out that we always enjoy and some trips we are trying for the first time. There are many reasons people join a car club – discounts, information, online chatting on the forum or facebook pages, car events – or maybe you want an extra element in your social life and you want to make new friends.
