Chairman’s Chat It may be hard to believe but this year (September) sees the 20th anniversary of the launch of the Boxster. At the time of its introduction, Porsche were only producing one other car, the 993. It is also the 40th anniversary of the 924, the first of the transaxle cars that were so important during the ’80s and early ’90s. Both cars are equally important in Porsche’s history and their fans will tell you they helped save the company at the time of their introduction. The 924, the 944 that followed (and early versions of the Boxster as well) are still doing their bit now. With values well within most budgets, these cars are often people’s first experience of Porsche ownership. As many of us know, once your bitten by the Porsche bug, you’re hooked. Spring time is here, and with events on the horizon, the first big clean of the year is due. The bucket of water with a dash of Fairy liquid, sponge and chamois are hopefully things of the past! Today we have snow foam lances, PH neutral shampoos, clay bars, and wax made from the only the finest carnauba palm (so the manufacturers would have us believe). This is often massaged in by hand … our neighbours think we are mad and they are probably right. However you choose to clean yours, I am sure that your Porsche will look wonderful. I look forward to seeing many of them in the flesh and on the pages of this magazine throughout the year.

Which brings me nicely to the magazine, we are always looking for new articles for the mag. So if you have an interesting story to tell about your car or your Porsche ownership, why not write it down. This can be about the purchase, a trip you had in the car, restoration work, etc. You do not need to be a literary genius, we can help you share your story and experiences. All good stories need photos, so please take some high resolution images to support the narrative. With the lead time required to produce the magazine, we will have held the AGM by the time you read this and I will share the significant outcomes from the meeting with you in the next issue of All Torque. I have already mentioned the anniversary models and it would be great to see Boxsters and 924s in the special model displays we have organised for Beaulieu. Whichever other forums or clubs you are a member of, please shout about the event. Simply Porsche is a firm favourite in the calendar and we are already planning for 2017 and beyond. (We will be celebrating 40 years of the 928 next year, hopefully the ozone layer can cope with a Panzer division of gorgeous V8s rumbling down to the South Coast.) Please try and make the show, Beaulieu is a fabulous venue with lots to do for all of the family. The eagle-eyed amongst you will have noticed a few omissions and errors in the last issue. In a rush to hit the print deadline the proof reading was not as robust as it should have been. Lessons have been learned and all the dates in this issue are correct. Please take advantage of our discounts for Silverstone Classic and Donington Historic. We have no access to tickets or infield passes after the deadline dates, so book now to avoid missing out. Both are great shows and are well worth attending. Ciao for now, Jason

Club news Silverstone Classic July 29th–31st (Friday–Sunday)

If you haven’t been before, we strongly recommend that you try to make it this year. It’s not just a car show, or a race meet or even a rock concert, it’s all three rolled into one.

We will again have a stand at what must be the biggest event of the year. As well as all the wonderful Porsches that will be on our stand, there are also thousands of other great cars to look at. Then there is the racing; three days of historical sports car racing, featuring everything from Minis to touring cars from the heyday in the ’90s and then up to the Formula 1 and GT legends. All this and full pit lane access to see behind the scenes.

It really is a fabulous weekend. Whether you come for just one day or all three you are guaranteed to have a great time. Last year saw the mighty Status Quo as the headline act on the Saturday night and I’m sure they will have some great acts lined up again. There are club discounts available for those who book early. Call 0871 231 0849 or visit www.silverstoneclassic. com and quote code SCC16064. Please see the advert in this issue for more details.

Simply Porsche 2016 Beaulieu, June 5th (Sunday) TIPEC’s annual show at Beaulieu is the biggest club event of the year. This is your club and your show. We do hope you enjoy it. Simply Porsche at Beaulieu is just two months away and we look forward to seeing many of you there. The show has continued to be a huge success and has grown year on year, this year looks to be following the trend and will be a fantastic day out for all the family (and the dog). Entry to the show will include entry to the Show, Museum, Abbey, Gardens and Palace House, home of the Montagu family for 500 years. We appreciate for those of you in the North, this is a long way to come for a car show. The opportunity to visit the area, especially for the weekend is worth the effort and the cost. Many of you have made a weekend of it over the last two years. There is a great choice of reasonably priced hotels around the Southampton area, or if you wish to stay in the New Forest, there are lots of B&Bs. I know quite a few of you have also camped locally, I have the details of a nice campsite that has had a decent Porsche contingent for the last two years. Details will be on the forum or just drop me an email on jason.gibson@tipec.net. Just as in previous years, Meguiar’s are sponsoring the Show and Shine competition. This is non-scoring with prizes for the top three cars entered. All models are welcome to enter, brand new or classic. This is not a concours competition, so don’t think it needs to be like new! The best pre-2000 model year car will also be invited to join the Meguiar’s Showcase at the NEC in November

Club shop Polo shirts There are a variety of colours available in men’s or ladies’ cuts to match or clash with your car, from Guards Red to Speed Yellow and a few that weren’t on Porsche’s colour charts too. Polo shirts come with the option of black or white embroidered logos. The story of Graham Driver’s 996 Carrera 4S By Andy Harris from TIPEC’s Thames Valley region This is Graham Driver’s 996 Carrera 4S, from the Thames Valley Region. Graham has owned his pride and joy for two years now, has been a member of TIPEC for 18 months and is a frequent visitor to our region’s monthly meeting at The Novello on the A4 Near Maidenhead. If you fancy popping along and saying hello, we always get a good turnout with a variety of interesting cars. Many of the cars are just ‘normal’ Porsche’s like Graham’s daily driver – although some of them are (much) cleaner than others! The food is good too – the chicken curry is always popular! Graham has been a keen Porsche enthusiast since his early teenage years. He says he never had the stereotypical ‘poster on the wall’ but his first Scalextric car was a Porsche. Now he has got himself a real one! Graham’s 996 C4S is a fairly standard car from the factory. Silver, Tiptronic, and does have some nice optional extras such as the Porsche crest pressed into the seat headrests. This is one of my favourite little options and unfortunately not one I have! Wheel spacers (5mm) all round have been added to ‘enhance the stance’ and Graham has swapped the ashtray for an oddments tray – an easy DIY job.

Unfortunately, after one year of ownership, a smoking engine led to Graham shipping the car up to Hartech, who diagnosed bore scoring. Graham decided to have a full Hartech rebuild; six new cylinder liners, cylinder head overhaul, uprated IMS bearing, new crank shaft bearings – the lot! Time will tell if this was financially the right thing to do. Meanwhile, the engine runs and purrs beautifully and Graham claims that he would rather have his 100,000 mile car with the rebuild than a low mileage garage queen costing many thousands more. For regular servicing and maintenance, Graham uses another Porsche specialist, Jaz Porsche in St Albans, as they are a lot closer to home. Graham has, as yet, not done any track days in his C4S. However, he has enjoyed a Caterham track day at Brands Hatch (organised by a friend he met at one of his first TIPEC meetings) and having done this, would love to run his C4S around a track, hopefully sometime this summer. Graham enjoyed the London Classic Car Show at the Excel in London during 2015 and I am sure he will be doing a few of the shows around the South East during 2016. Simply Porsche at Beaulieu and Classics at the Castle are well worth an outing especially if the sun is shining!

The C4S is not Graham’s only car. He is also the proud owner of a Volkswagen T5 California Camper, which he drove round the Nurburgring a few years ago – just happened to be passing, he tells me! Being a VW enthusiast myself, I can only imagine that it is a lovely motor and it seems Graham gets plenty of enjoyment and use out of it. Overall Graham’s C4S is a clean and tidy car. The next thing on his to-do list is wheel refurbishment. As much as they are still in relatively good condition, a full strip down and re-paint will brighten them up no end. He also plans to get some new centre caps for the wheels, the ones with the ‘4S’ emblem which would have been on the car when new. Graham’s dream Porsche would be a 934 Turbo from the late ’70s era, Le Mans style. Keep playing the lottery Graham, you just never know!

“ Graham would rather have his 100,000 mile car with its rebuild than a low mileage garage queen.

OUT OF THE DARKNESS Author / Photographer Jason Gibson

TIPEC Chairman Jason Gibson went on a skiing holiday with some Porsche-fan friends. He didn’t expect to be standing on a frozen Italian street at 2am waiting for 30+ classic Porsches as they completed the 2016 Winter Marathon.

AT / 116

I have two big passions in my life. Obviously there is the car thing, this I have had since I was a wee lad. My dad restored old Fiat twin cams, especially the 124 Spider, of which I’ve owned three. While my car history is littered with Italian twin cams, I eventually got bitten by the Porsche bug and the rest is history. My second passion is skiing, I only started seven and a half years ago after being dragged along on my first trip by six other TIPEC members. Maybe we should have a TIPEC Ski Club? I have since been on 15 trips already and this year’s trip to Italy was with one ex-TIPEC member, one current, and one potential new member. A week before leaving for our trip, I replied to a comment on our tour operator’s Facebook page. The guy who runs it, and lives in the town I was going to, saw my reply. He obviously looked at my profile pic, which at the time had something Porsche related on it.

A week later, and after the first days skiing we head back for a spot of Aprés in the Eta Beta Bar. Within an hour I had a new best friend for the week, Stefano. Now my Italian is very limited and while his English was pretty good, having conversations about cars wasn’t easy … but we got there in the end. Stefano, as I found out, is the proud owner of three fabulous cars: a 993, a 964 and in pride of place a 1959 356. That’s not a bad collection at all! Before I even finish my first pint, Stefano has told me about a Rally that is held in the region, the Winter Marathon. Over 130 pre-1975 cars dating back to the 1930s were taking part, amongst them over 30 Porsches. Now as luck would have it, the final marathon was taking place on Wednesday this week. The final stage will finish in our village and I have now been invited. There is one small problem; they won’t start arriving until at least 1:30am.

“Ah Jason, the conditions are geat here and I see you are a Porsche fan. You need to meet the owner of the bar in town, he has a couple of old Porsches and he’s fanatical about them.” This sounded good, I get to drink beer and talk about Porsches! PAGE / 13

“ So, it’s now very early on Thursday morning, 1:30am, and it’s around minus 10ºC outside. There are no signs of any cars in the town square, just the finish line with its timing facilities …

AT / 116

The route starts at 2:30pm and takes in 400km of fantastic roads and mountain passes in the Trentino Region of Italy. They stop off at some towns along the way for time checks, with each Mayor keen to get in on the action. So in total it’s over 12 hours in very cold conditions in some very old cars, many of which were open top. So, it’s now very early on Thursday morning, 1:30am, and it’s around minus 10ºC outside. There are no signs of any cars in the town square, just the finish line with its timing facilities and a couple of stands with hot soup or mulled wine. We stay in the pub a bit longer and I really, really want my bed now.

Then I hear something. It’s something very familiar, that unmistakable sound of a Porsche aircooled engine. It’s now just gone 2:00am and in the town square there are around 10 vintage cars. I see an old, very rare, open top Fiat – a 1932 508S, which was also the winner of the event. Looking around I see an old 911, then another… oh look there’s a 356, no there’s two of them. For the next hour, all of the cars, bar a few that broke down, turned up. Most of which, if in England, would be tucked up under a cover in a heated garage. More 356s including Speedsters. I didn’t know it was possible to drive with so many layers on! I was like a kid in a sweet shop, as were Eddie (ex-TIPEC member) and Peter. The cars rolling in were some of my all time favourites. Now a Fiat 128 Rally might not turn everyone’s head but a ’73 RS, a 914/6 GT, and a Lancia Stratos just might. In total there were 36 Porsches, all looked and sounded fabulous.

I was so busy trying to take photos, I hadn’t realised my hands had gone so numb that I lost all feeling and dropped my camera phone. Now a cold, brittle phone being dropped onto concrete isn’t going to turn out for the best. So I put the bits of phone in my pocket and borrow Peter’s camera. Actually, now is a good time for a mug of hot wine to help defrost the fingers. Another hour, more hot drinks, lots more cars and we’re finally done. Wow, what a fabulous and unexpected treat that was. It’s now 3:30am and I will be getting up at 7:00am, but do I care? Nope, it’s been a blast. More information about the event can be found online at www.wintermarathon.it The resort of the finishing stage is Folgarida but the start is in the neighbouring town of Madonna Di Campillio, where they also send the cars onto a frozen lake for time trials. Many Thanks to Stefano of the Eta Beta Bar in Folgaida. Truly one of us!

A TALE OF TWO PORSCHES Nathalie McGloin is the UK’s only female spinal injured licensed racing driver. Nathalie is well-known as a Porsche fanatic and tells us here about her two latest purchases, a Macan S Diesel and a 991 GT3RS. Author Natalie McGloin / Photographers Rob Overy & Tony Harrison

PAGE / 17

“ The optional air suspension has an extraordinary

ability to mask the Macan’s size and weight. Despite being clearly made for the road … it lapped the Silverstone GP circuit at speeds that other drivers found somewhat surprising!

AT / 116

Nathalie McGloin is currently racing a Cayman in the Porsche Club Championships, and is an ambassador for Susie Wolff’s Dare To Be Different initiative. Nathalie is sponsored by Omolagato watches and Irwin Mitchell Asset Management.

An afternoon in a Macan demonstrator during a service for the GT3 was all it took to realise that I needed to upgrade the Audi estate. The Audi was great for throwing things in the back, but lacked any enjoyment and wasn’t capable of towing my Cayman racing car. A Macan S Diesel was swiftly sourced and it’s proved itself to be an outstanding all-rounder. The optional air suspension has an extraordinary ability to mask the Macan’s size and weight. It’s no 911, but you don’t feel like you’re driving a heavy 4x4. Despite being clearly made for the road, it coped with the muddy and slippery environment of a day’s shooting and has even lapped the Silverstone GP circuit at speeds that other drivers found somewhat surprising! It has switchable suspension and gearbox settings that allow the car to be more than able to cope in all environments. One of the biggest surprises was the fuel economy. It’s a fast two tonne 4x4, yet is capable of 40mpg on most journeys. No matter what you require a ‘family car’ to do, if you haven’t taken a Macan on a test drive, then you really should.

The sale of my 991 GT3 late last year left a 911 sized hole in my life. The long wait is over and I’m now the extremely proud owner of an aggressive looking 991 GT3RS. With a strict factory specified 1,800 mile running in period, the next few months are going to be frustrating! Despite not going past 5,000rpm, you can tell that this is a different engine to the GT3 and there is noticeably more torque lower down. The steering is noticeably lighter than the GT3, but surprisingly it provides more information back through the wheel. Porsche really have re-engineered the old style 911 steering feel back into the 991 range. The gearbox has also been updated to be smoother; something I didn’t think was possible. The PDK on the GT3 was the best double clutch gearbox on the market by some distance, so the engineers in Stuttgart must be guilty of witchcraft. The RS will see the track a few times this year and won’t just be locked away in a sealed carcoon like too many will. The GT3 covered 18,000 miles in just less than a year – I’m not precious about mileage. Waiting so long for a car to arrive and then not driving it doesn’t seem right to me. I aim to have an update on the RS once it is run in and has been on track.

SPECIALIST SPOTLIGHT PIE Performance Ian Jones of TIPEC’s North Essex & Anglia region tells us about their local independent Porsche specialist.

Situated on the outskirts of Lavenham, Chris and John Lansbury’s passion for Porsche has developed into a thriving East Anglia business at PIE Performance. I first met Chris and John over a year ago at one of their informal coffee and car mornings, and it soon became apparent that we were all on the same page. With a service booked, a little preventative work discussed and budgeted for, plus those little extras (mine being a quick change exhaust system from road to track and an ignition box test), I dropped off the ‘Mad Pig’ and Chris set to work! With the service and preventative work done, and the quick change system fitted, Chris was not happy with it, so it was improved, adjusted and reworked until Chris was sure I’d be pleased! And I was, with all the extra work I was very surprised that the bill was less then what was agreed at the start. Also, because of the few extra days he had the car, the ignition box test was carried out for free. John Briggs also has let PIE loose on his 996 which had been maintained, as it turned out poorly, by another specialist – loose plugs and incorrectly fitted coil packs to name two issues. A courtesy car was supplied whilst being serviced and sorted. John is now a very happy chap and says it drives like a different car! PIE’s discount for TIPEC members probably helped. AT / 116

Our region’s newest member, Adam Jiggins, recently purchased his first Porsche 996, which had previously been maintained by PIE. Whilst doing his homework Adam contacted Chris who informed him of past issues and maintenance on the car. He has just had his annual service carried out, plus an air-con refresh. I went along to PIE’s first Coffee & Cars meeting of the year, which was well attended – not only by Porsche owners but a couple of other clubs as well. My second incentive was to collect the ‘Mad Pig’ from its annual check up and service. PIE also sorted out a small running issue, keeping me informed of the progress. All sorted out with the minimal amount of fuss. Chris will be opening the doors up for a special TIPEC open morning for those interested on Saturday the 14th May.He will also supporting us at our annual local event, Cars On The Green, in Bury St Edmunds on the 19th June, with a number of cars. All in addition to their regular coffee mornings, where all are welcome. See their website at www.pieperformance.co.uk for details.

valid contribution over the years. It was excellent to see Elaine as the first female ARO for the region. Elaine and James will still be a big part of the region’s events and can now take a more relaxed role and enjoy what the region has to offer to them as members. I would also like to take this opportunity to say that the region now has a Facebook page titled TIPEC Scotland in addition to the main club’s page entitled The Independent Porsche Enthusiasts Club. Both Facebook pages are strictly for members only. Please look them up and ask to be invited to the group, enclosing your membership number so we can validate current membership status.

Well after much deliberation and many suggestion forms looked at and talked about at the winter meetings we have now got a firm idea of where the region will be floating about for 2016. There are some new events such as the German Car Show and Trackday event at Knockhill, something that has been suggested by many on the forms, so we will be there this year. Also the Porsche Experience day out at Silverstone combined with an NEC Birmingham visit – also a new idea. Yes, there are a few of the old favourites in there as you will see and all the ideas come from you, the members. The way it should be.

We look forward to seeing you all this season and I think you will agree there is something for everyone on this year’s diary of events. We are always a busy region and to be honest and we would not have it any other way!

As you will be already aware the region now has two new AROs in the shape of John Davidson, ARO West of Scotland, and Scott Allan, ARO East of Scotland. John and Scott come fully loaded with bags of enthusiasm and will be a great asset to the region. I look forward to them developing their interests and ideas to take the region forward.

When this falls on a Bank Holiday, we meet on the second Monday of the month instead. Our first club run of the new year happened on the 3rd of January. Although the weather was a bit grim we had a collection of six Porsches and one Lotus at our meeting point in the Ribble Valley for a run through the Trough of Bowland and on into the Yorkshire Dales. Doug Ogden was kind enough to lead our little convoy and we made gentle progress to our first stop in Slaidburn. We then headed to Settle where Marc needed a little inflation (offside front tyre specifically). Back on the road we took a North West favourite road to Hawes where we stopped for a late breakfast. Back on the road again, we headed to the famous Bikers’ haunt of Devil's Bridge for a cuppa before making our way home. By the time we said our goodbyes the weather had changed from being a bit grim to very grim but there were enough TIPEC grins to make it all worthwhile! On Sunday 14th of February we had a ‘short notice’ coffee meet at the Longridge Starbucks. It was a short notice gathering purely because the evening before I realised that the weather forecast was good and that my own 911 hadn’t been out of the garage for nearly a month and was due a run out! Thanks to the power of our Facebook group, a quick post suggesting a coffee meet saw eight Porsches

and 12 people gathered in the sunshine the next morning. After coffee and cake it seemed only right to go for a gentle drive through the Trough of Bowland, so we did! It was great that Jason Lee joined us at Starbucks: he’s editor-in-chief at the specialist Porsche website pomopar.com and a man for whom a 928 makes a perfect daily driver. Take a look at his website galleries and you’re likely to find several TIPEC NW cars featured. Thanks also to Steve Bailey for trekking down from The Lakes in his lovely Cayman for his first TIPEC NW get together. We held our first Friday Feast of the year on February 19th. Sadly, the weather was awful, again, but our members turned out in force and there were 21 of us at The Phantom Winger in Preston for tea. Because of the awful weather most of us travelled there in our day-to-day cars but Colin, Chris and Norman bought their 944s, Steve came along in his 964 and Tim and Diane were in their 986. We thought that Chris Evans and Matt Le Blanc may have joined us for tea, but they were busy in the car park with their Reliant three-wheelers, filming for Top Gear. The Friday Feasts and Chippy Teas that we have throughout the year are a fun, informal way of either getting to know the members in the region or keeping in touch with folk you already know. If you’ve never joined in, please consider doing so. Or, if you have a good suggestion for a new venue please let me know – just remember that both availability of seating and Porsche friendly parking are key requirements. Hopefully this issue of All Torque will reach you before the 10th April. That’s the date of our second Charity Pet Food Run to Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary. A really successful event for us in 2015, we’re hoping to build on that this year. Please get in touch for more details. There’s another Friday Feast/Chippy Tea on 15th April – now internationally famous, these events are often copied but never equalled. Feel free to come along for yer tea!

TIPEC North West’s Sunday morning coffee meet – at a moment’s notice, thanks to Facebook!

We’ve had a successful uptake for this year’s karting event which is scheduled for 23rd April and is a joint event with the guys from NORLOG (Northern Lotus Owners Group). If you’re quick you can still join in – get in touch with me (Richard) for more details. I’m delighted to report that the North West Region has 11 cars booked to take part in the Club’s trackday at Blyton Park on July 16th. My understanding is that all the places have now been taken but you may still wish to pop over to Blyton on the day to observe the goings on and to grab a few passenger laps. You’ll need long sleeves, long trousers and a helmet (but I’m sure you’ll be able to borrow a helmet if you don’t own one). On the 7th of May we have arranged a visit to The Wheel Restorer in Wrexham. Roger Bracewell is a respected master of the wheel refurbishment art (and known 924/944 fancier) and he’s opening his doors to us for a peek into his world. Arranged by ARO Colin, I’d be surprised if there wasn’t a run over to the Evo Triangle afterwards and maybe he’ll head home via Porsche Centre Chester. I’ll be distributing more details regarding meeting points and times via email and Facebook. The Jasmine Porschalink open evening is scheduled for 18th May and is always a good ‘Porsche Social Evening’.

If you’re not receiving email updates from the region please contact me (Richard) on the number above so that you can be added to my distribution lists. If you’re a non-participating member, or just interested to know more, please feel free to get in touch with either myself, Colin or Simon, or come along to a monthly meet to say hello. We’d be pleased to meet you and not all of the chat is about chassis numbers or sunroof seals! Lastly – I have just been told that there is no Haigh Hall show this year. Information is scarce but I have it on good authority that, sadly, no arrangements could be made to keep the German Classics Car Show going in its original format. May 22nd (Sunday) Porsches on the Prom, Llandudno

Cheshire and Staffs started 2016 with a New Year drive around the Peak District. There was a mixture of nine Porsches plus four members in their winter wheels out to brave the elements. All enjoyed a cold, rainy, scenic (however slightly muggy) drive from Congleton, through into Gradbatch, over into Buxton where we took a drive around Bakewell and Matlock that would have been more suited to amphibious transport. The Cayman up front was ploughing through the puddles with a wave over the bonnet (!) and the brave Porsche owners behind were wading through. The 928s of Dave Watson and Ian Highfield truly were Land Sharks in this weather. All made it through safely before stopping for lunch at the Royal Oak Inn near Ashbourne, where we also managed to pick up a few more club members along the way! We made a local chap’s day when he was picking up his wife and her friend in his Porsche 944 (yes the lady’s friend was getting into the back of the 944). He stopped and did a double-take at the beautiful display of Porsches in the car park. Despite the weather, it was great to see such a good turnout. An enjoyable day was had by all. The January Club meeting saw Dave Watson present the latest in our series of ‘Model Essentials’ guides to Porsche. This presentation was on the Porsche 914, and despite the lengthy list of detracting factors for the unwary buyer, it was well received by those in attendance. Please note that the Powerpoint file for this presentation (along with the one previously delivered on the 928) can be downloaded in PDF form from our Facebook Group for the Region. After a few failed attempts to connect, it was lovely to finally have Steve Merrett and Steve Nash of Leathercare in Warrington come to our February club night as our guest speakers. It was standing room only at the Whipping Stocks with some 28 members in attendance. The two Steves gave a fascinating insight into the world of classic and luxury car leather care and renovations. Both formerly worked for the famous Connolly Leather concern and have a wealth of experience. Their talk took us through how leather is prepared, coloured and sealed during manufacturing, and how this affects treatments for differing forms of restoration. The advent of water-based chemicals also makes this particularly challenging, with even the newest leathers becoming easily damaged by dyes in jeans and other modern clothing. They brought a range of products along (some of us have invested in them and can confirm excellent results).

A number of us have also had our cars fully treated by Leathercare, including Dave Watson’s 911 Turbo which was displayed on the Club Stand at the NEC Classic Motorshow. If you need the interior of your car, boat or executive jet (!) attended to, Leathercare come highly recommended. 21st February saw our first show of 2016, ‘Dubfreeze’ at Stafford County Showground, where we had a club stand with two 928s, a 914, a 996 and a beautiful 356 (owned by Jon of 65deluxe.com) on display. A couple of club members also had their VWs on display in the main hall’s balcony. A good day was had by all, even though the show lived up to its name with the cold weather. On the Carole Nash Insurance stand, Stefanie held first position for the fastest time (6.73 seconds) connecting the ignition leads to an engine, despite Matt trying to knock her off!! At the last minute she was beaten and came second, though she did slip in to Fuzz Townshend about her ’79 924 that needs a lot of TLC for his Car SOS show! You never know! It was nice to see a good turn out again. We are already looking forward to more shows and events over the coming months. Gmund qs

South Yorkshire & North Notts. Joint RO Dean Lancashire 07860 198 627 • dean@tachart.com Joint RO Ray Waite waite696@aol.com Meetings are held first Sunday of every month 5–5:30pm (meeting proper begins 7pm) at Ye Olde Bell Hotel, Barnby Moor, Retford, Notts, DN22 8QS A quiet start to the year so far, club nights are well attended though. 20 members sat down for another hearty meal at the Tara Lounge Indian restaurant, despite the numbers and the occasional hiccup, a good night was had by all and we will do it again. This was the third year of our visit to the Restoration Show at the NEC and it just gets bigger. Lots to see and people to chat to, including the TIPEC stand. With a title like Restoration Show you could expect a lot of ‘barn finds’ not a place to be in your Sunday best. Mike Brewer told us how he sourced a 1968 Chevrolet Camaro Super Sport in Seattle, USA, (for £5,000) and brought it back home – it looked absolutely stunning. Dean very nearly bought a

718 RSK in the auction but decided not to, despite encouragement from Ray. Ray was very tempted to buy a four post lift, but as they had increased in price so much over the last year his nerve went. Maybe in the cold light of day Katharine might talk some sense into him! This show will definitely be in the 2017 calendar. The March meeting night had the usual suspects in attendance, the usual quiz was forgone to spend more time discussing events and trips out, at least we managed to steer the ladies away from talking shops. Dean had some new suggestions which Ray and Dean will be looking into for the future. Bugatti at the London Classic Car Show

We seem to have a steady flow of new members into the region, mainly recruited from casual visitors to the regular gatherings, but it still surprises how few of our regional membership we have met; hopefully 2016 will see some of you out in your cars. In February, Peter & I visited the London Classic Car Show at Excel in London’s Docklands, Peter reports: “On a very cold Saturday in February Vince & I attended the London Classic Car Show held at the Excel, Docklands. It differs from the usual because the cars on display are nearly all from high end classic car dealers, restorers and manufacturers. Many were for sale and their rarity and desirability was reflected by the asking prices. Uniquely, every hour or so, there was a parade of cars along the road that ran the length of the building between the stands. It was great to hear the engines and exhausts of some of the more powerful models. There was a smaller additional hall where a few car clubs displayed the more typical classic cars one would expect to see. Also, McLaren had a special exhibition of the iconic F1 road car, showing its history, development and competition success, it was well worth the small queue to view the collection. Overall, it was a great show, full of stunning and rare cars, well worth the visit, so make a note in your diaries.” Peter and I will be attending the TIPEC AGM at Gaydon on Sunday 20th March; as noted in the last magazine, the museum has had a major refresh of exhibits to take in after the AGM business is concluded. Members are welcome to attend the meeting which starts at 10:30am prompt and, of course, enjoy the museum; lunch is usually laid on for meeting attendees. Jason Gibson will be Chairing the meeting having taken over from Jim Hearnden in 2015. We now have a commitment from our friends in Anglia region to join us at the Spring Car Show at IWM Duxford in Cambridgeshire on Sunday May 1st; I have had a number of confirmed requests AT / 116

For Simply Porsche in June, Peter and I will be travelling down on the Saturday, to make the Sunday event entry more relaxed; if there is member interest, we could plan a destination drive out for the Saturday, please let us know if that would be of interest? Hotels and B+Bs book up fast in the New Forest, so if you are planning to stay over Saturday evening book early, Lymington is a short drive from Beaulieu and a pleasant historic town to explore. We will again book a small number of spaces for the Little Gransden Air Show in August; spaces will be limited to probably 10, unless we get confirmed commitment from members in well advance. It is an excellent flying display from the airfield and the display area is close to the runway, so you can get really close to the planes on the ground. You enter by crossing the runway, so once in there is no exit until flying has finished around 4pm. We look forward to seeing members at our regular gatherings and/or the bigger planned events; drop us an email if you’re visiting for the first time, so that we can look you up. May 1st (Sunday) TBC IWM Duxford Spring car show. We are hoping to make this a joint event with TIPEC Anglia to get as many cars on display as possible. Kim, Rachel and ‘Boy George’ ...

Our first Breakfast club meeting at the local Dobbies garden centre was attended by nine Porsches, a Freelander and a Jag. Considering we were at the front of the queue when they opened the doors we managed to carry on talking about just about everything and they had started serving lunches by the time we left. 31 of us turned up at the Hollywood Bowling Centre in Rochester on the 31st Jan (Well done Rachel) and well the standards of bowling left something to be desired, as did some of the bowling styles ... didn’t they Grant! There was only ever going to be one winner, with our Graeme winning virtually every game and walking off with the very first SELNK annual bowling award. Cheap it may have been, but impressive it was. Well done all and hope the injuries cleared up quickly. What has become our annual Spa weekend took place at the London Beach Hotel on the 6th & 7th Feb. With eight couples for the weekend including Vince & Helen from North London and Jan & Chris joining us for Dinner. Much healthy exercise in the swimming pool, spa and various beauty treatments took place over the weekend with the addition of several cream teas, the odd glass of wine and a few beers during the afternoon watching the Rugby. The evening meal proved to be its usual treat, more food, wine and beer and the surprise visit of Boy George (Well a good lookalike) whom we hijacked from a function in the next room. Apparently we were better company. Sunday saw more healthy exercise with four of the boys going out to stretch their Porsche legs around the East Kent countryside. Next year’s event has already been booked. Well done to Kim for arranging again and negotiating the same rate for the third year running. Watch our diary for the 2017 dates. Nick & Debs arranged for us to attend the Brooklands Breakfast club on the 21st Feb. They said we need to meet and be ready to leave Clacketts

Lane services at 7am on the Sunday morning. Good luck with that one was our response. Surprisingly, and proudly, 15 cars (some with spouses) turned up bright and early at a miserable, damp and ungodly hour. Sean had arranged for Costa to be open early, of which we made good use. As we left the services one of the M25’s highway patrol officers filmed the convoy for his son who is a big Porsche fan. When we arrived we had perfect hard standing parking, perfect breakfast in the upper restaurant so we could see the cars arriving. The rain stopped and we all enjoyed the morning. The only upset for the day was when a few of us got caught up on a long queue on the M25 when heading home. Well done Nick & Debs, proving again that our 2015 MotY was a good choice and the competition is hotting up for the 2016 winners ... We are constantly updating our mailing list and if you are in our region and not getting our mails, or simply want to join in with the SELNK region, please let Paul or I know, like our Facebook page for updates, or visit our club page on TIPEC.net. Thames Valley RO Jason Gibson 07958 459 725 • tipec@blueyonder.co.uk RO Andrew Harris 07812 146999 • andrewharris67@hotmail.co.uk Meetings are held second Tuesday of every month 7:00pm at The Novello, Bath Rd, Littlewick Green, Maidenhead, SL6 3RX. Our change of day to the second Tuesday of the month was a success. I thought having turned up just before 7pm with my Dad and only being the two cars in the car park that things might have gone drastically wrong but then in drove Peter with his Boxster and with a little wipe of my brow, everyone started arriving – phew! Even though it was a wet and cold evening we had a good number of Porsches turn out along with a few other branded, not mentioning any names, 4x4 vehicles! I think the owners of these were saving their nice and dry, clean Porsches for a slightly better evening, I don’t blame them! We had a few new faces join us which was lovely to see. Haydn informed us that he is the proud owner of a 356A of which he has owned for 37 years, we are all extremely excited about seeing this when the weather is a little kinder. We are starting to see more and more Boxsters at our meeting, what a fantastic value for money car, keep them coming. Our first run out of the year was Sunday 3rd January however; unfortunately I was unable to join in the fun as I had a prior engagement at a clay pigeon shoot. I think I should have traded my shotgun in for a snorkel, mask and a harpoon as the weather was so awful, however this didn’t stop half a dozen or so cars meeting up at The Novello and enjoying a 50 mile wet sprint around the countryside, ending up in the pub, as you do, for a hot meal and a drink, good fun had all round. 12th April (Tuesday) Monthly Meeting at The Novello April 15–17th (Friday) Porsche Endurance racing Silverstone, regional day out on the Sunday April 24th (Sunday) Annual curry run

I am very pleased to say my own Porsche 924 (ARY) made an appearance in Classic & Sports Car magazine (March issue) when they wrote about ‘Porsche’s unsung heroes’ the Porsche 924,944 and 968. The photoshoot took place back in November, but has only just gone to print. The photographs for the shoot are quite something, I think former owner John Wallin (deceased) would have been impressed with them. The article also featured Chris Cook’s former 944, reg G816 NSU, which was sold in late 2013. Well worth a look if you can get a copy. Special thanks to Porsche Centre Mid Sussex for detailing the car to concours standard.

obviously over retirement age – Bob and I felt very at home with them! “Thursday ... the Virgin Atlantic flight didn’t seem to take the nine hours it did. My hotel room was great with a 40" TV, fridge, microwave, double length shower and twin double beds! Others, including Bob, were envious as they did not get a fridge or a microwave. “Friday ... a bus ride up International Drive and walk back. The most noticeable thing was the almost complete absence of other pedestrians! During the walk a stop off at Hooters for a hamburger and jug of beer served up by delightful young and friendly ladies ... although I was a little surprised to be asked, by a girl young enough to be my granddaughter, for my ID when ordering my first beer! “Saturday & Sunday ... at the track and knackered but happy. Saturday evening, dinner in an Italian restaurant a hundred yards from the hotel providing excellent food and again served up again by delightfully young and friendly ladies ... Sunday dinner at the hotel as too tired to walk the 100 yards again. “Monday ... bus ride to the Kennedy Space Centre plus another bus tour around the Cape Canaveral launch sites with a stop at the Space Shuttle exhibition. Evening dinner back at the Italian restaurant.

Lastly, and by no means least, two of our own members decided to cross something off their Bucket list. Terry Rockall & our ARO Bob Stephens made the pilgrimage to this year’s Daytona 500 in Florida. I’ll let them fill in the gaps for you ...

“Tuesday ... breakfast at the hotel, pack the case, check out and chill out with more food and beer while watching ‘Bigfoot’ vans racing against the clock on tv, then take off in Boeing 747-400 flown by both a female pilot and co-pilot!

After fundraising during 2015 in our region for Great Western Air Ambulance it was lovely to spend an afternoon at their base on Filton airfield (the small corner that is still operational!) We were made very welcome and given the chance to position Pete’s 911 Targa next to one of the helicopters for photos! Thanks Pete, Wendy & Dave for accompanying me on the visit and to everyone for the generosity that means we raised almost £2,000 last year – let’s keep it up through 2016. February gave some of the TIPEC ‘WAGs’ an opportunity to get together for an afternoon tea and the selected venue Berwick Lodge did us proud – can’t wait for our next outing ladies! Our March meeting will include a talk by Graham & Pete entitled ‘Their Life With Cars’ and April will hopefully incorporate a bit of a quiz night courtesy of Rob. Our partners and anyone with an interesting topic are welcome to be included in future meetings – just get in touch with me to organise.

March will also be the month for our ‘Clinic’ at Porsche Bristol – I already have 20 cars booked. This is just one way in which Porsche Bristol work with us at TIPEC. It is hugely appreciated and of great benefit in getting to know your car. March will also be the month for the TIPEC AGM and I am looking forward to seeing lots of members there and visiting the newly upgraded Gaydon Heritage Museum, where hopefully I will have some photos for the next edition of All Torque. We will be making a weekend of it – so if anyone from any region wants to join us please get in touch. Similarly the September trip to Ireland for the Causeway Coastal tour is now well subscribed to by around 20 people and anyone is welcome to join our group for the trip while spaces are available.
