All Torque / 121 Feb/Mar 2017 Chairman’s Chat It is the 2nd of Jan as I add a couple of late bits of information to this column, so I will wish you all a Happy New Year. 2016 was a little bit rubbish if you were a celebrity, there seemed to be lots of people leaving us around the festive period. So let me start this with some good news … We had a new region (Peterborough) start up in December. Peterborough and the surrounding areas have long been poorly represented by our regions, however this is all about to change. I travelled up the A1 on a cold and misty afternoon to join them for their first meeting, which was very well attended. I can see that this will be a region that will grow nicely over the next few years. Stuart and Michael are both very keen and we all wish them well. Peterborough isn’t the only new region, we are launching another new region, Hampshire, on the 1st of February. I suppose this technically isn’t a new region as it is replacing the Wessex region but it is a bit more than a rebrand. A name change was long overdue to describe the region more accurately and the venue was also changed to be more central in the county. We have also changed the date to the first Wednesday of the month. More details in TIPEC News and in the regional round up.

We are also hopeful of having a new region in NW Wales fairly soon with a famous name looking to get something set up in the region. Hopefully more news on this shortly.

Another couple of regions that have been without an RO or a meeting for a while are East Midlands and the Yorkshire region. It is hoped that we will very soon get these regions kickstarted again, hopefully in the next month or two. Watch this space. So what has 2017 got in store for us at TIPEC Towers? Well, we are already planning for Simply Porsche at Beaulieu on the 4th June. This year sees the 40th Anniversary of the 928 and as an ex-928 owner, I am looking forward to seeing the fantastic display of Land Sharks at our main show. We also hope to have all of our Northern and Midlands based regions getting together for the Donington historic Festival at the end of April. This should be a great display of cars and a chance for those from different regions to get together. At the NEC we have two shows again: the Classic Car restoration show from March 31st to April 2nd and the Classic Motor Show in November. Then there is the awesome Silverstone Classic at the end of July, which is my favourite. Of course we can add the many local shows and events that the regions put on during the year, and the various tours that are available. I think it looks like being another fun-filled year of Porsche ownership for us all. This year’s AGM isn’t far away, so put the date in your diary: Sunday April 2nd at Coventry Transport Museum. News & updates Simply Porsche 2017 Beaulieu, June 4th (Sunday) TIPEC’s annual shindig at Beaulieu is the biggest club event of the year and was arguably THE Porsche event of 2016.

It really is a wonderful part of the country so spend a few days, so why not book up in advance and make a long weekend of it?

Last year’s Simply Porsche event was the biggest and best ever with over 1,000 cars heading through the New Forest to get to Beaulieu.

This year’s show is going to be even better with a bigger trade village and a wonderful display of 928s celebrating their 40th birthday. New Regions We are pleased to announce two new regions: Peterborough & Hampshire If you are local then please pop along and say hello. As with all of our meetings, members from neighbouring regions are welcome to come along and join in the fun.

Peterborough meetings are held on the second Wednesday of the month from 7:30pm at the Botolph Arms, 456 Oundle Road, Peterborough PE2 7DD. The new RO is Stuart Wand, and the ARO is Michael Walter.

Stuart Wand, new RO, reports on the Peterborough region’s beginnings For some time I’ve been an avid fan of Porsches for many years but never delved into ownership. That changed in April 2016 when I bought my first Porsche, a 2014 Cayman. Soon after I joined TIPEC and was looking forward to meeting up with other Porsche owners. Only then did I discover that the nearest regions were Leicester and Bury St Edmunds; both a considerable distance for club nights out. I thought nothing more about it until I attended my first TIPEC sponsored event at the Silvestone Classic where I met Jason and Sean. I discussed the lack of a local region based near Peterborough and Jason thought there might be others in the local area who would be interested. It wasn’t until after the NEC Classic Car Show in November that this was mentioned to Michael, who is also from Peterborough. Jason introduced us to each other and after a very brief chat we decided that we’d like to form a new region. The only issue was what to call it. We struggled with a name for the region, eventually settling on Peterborough.

We arranged our first meeting, found a suitable venue, distributed home-made leaflets and posted on as many websites we could find. Our first meeting was arranged for 14th December, which seemed a little close to Christmas, but in our enthusiasm we pushed ahead hoping to get a few interested souls. We had hopes of a small gathering of five or six people to start off the inaugural meeting of the Peterborough region. To our surprise we ended up with double that! We also had some others who couldn’t make it but expressed their support. It was a very enjoyable evening with everyone discussing their love of their cars and their moments of ripping their hair out trying to sort out issues. New friends were made, drink was drunk (non-alcoholic of course), food was eaten and shiny Porsches were lined up to be admired. Everyone left with a smile on their faces and looking forward to the next meeting, when we can start planning our adventures. We already have a long list of events and trips for 2017. All in all it was a great evening!

Porsche Boxster and Cayman – The Complete Story Author Johnny Tipler Price £25.00 ISBN 978-1-78500-211-3 www.crowood.com The Crowood Press are relatively new to Porsche books, this is only their second. So how does it compare to the competition? Tipler’s book kicks off with the briefest of backgrounds on Porsche and its general history before diving straight in to the development story behind the Boxster. The tone is light but thorough, with facts and figures, dates and names … but it’s definitely a personal take and an easy read. The photography leans heavily on Porsche’s own archive, and as such you may have seen some of the pictures before, especially if you’re a Boxster/Cayman officionado. This does mean the quality is high though, and whilst the typography is maybe a little heavy-handed, the photos are bright and sharp. Tipler deals with the Boxster first, with chapters on each generation of the car, before jumping back in time to the introduction of the first Cayman and running through its history in a similar manner. It’s after this that the book gets more interesting, though. We get a personal take on a few of Boxster and Cayman models through the years, as Tipler writes about his own road trips around the UK and Europe. Then a brief section on the racing heritage of the cars, and another on major tuners and modifiers, before wrapping up with brief tips for maintenance and a mention of the new replacements, the 718 Series cars. This makes the book unique – as well as the usual history and technical info, there are road trips, and lengthy interviews with designers and racers. It may be a relatively cheap book, by coffee-table Porsche reporting standards, but it definitely holds its own by striking out in some interesting directions. PAGE / 5

Some of Porsche’s paint colours can really divide opinion. Macadamia Brown isn’t for everyone, but Graham Miller knew what he wanted. Like most of us in the club my obsession with Porsche started very early. As a young apprentice for an electrical engineering firm, I can remember being sent from Reading with a senior engineer into London to work on a shop in Oxford Street. On the way over the Hammersmith flyover a frog green sports car with half a roof and a very noisy engine came past us. “Wot’s that?” I asked in my best Berkshire teenager accent, “that’s a Porsche Targa” came the reply. I was hooked on all things Porsche from that moment on. Fast forward about 40 years to 2014 and I finally stopped bothering my family with tales of “when I win the lottery” and bought the car I had been researching for what seemed like years; a 2008 911 Carrera S in Macadamia Brown. I remember seeing one in a brochure around the time it was launched and thought ‘that’s the very chappie for me’. The car was supplied by Porsche East London who even brought the car to my office in Reading so I could test drive it. What fantastic service.

Okay, it’s a Marmite colour, but personally I love it and when it’s clean and the sun shines on it the metalflake simply sparkles. I have received lots of good comments taking it to club meets etc as it seems to be a bit of a rare colour. This year was my big birthday (59 and 12 months) so my tribe had planned that we go to the West Coast of America in September and do the drive from San Francisco down to Las Vegas and as I have never been totally happy with the paint on the car (it was a London car and had a few interesting scars that can only happen in a big city). I contacted Lake Autos, the body shop I use to look after our company vehicles, spoke to Steve Barnett one of the owners, and together we hatched a plan to bring the car’s bodywork up to spec whilst I was away in the States.

The car seemed to have issues around both doors which looked slightly rippled and there were curious white shadows showing through which reappeared after washing. The bonnet had some stone chips and the front bumper was a little bulletholed as well. The other thing that concerned me was how exposed the radiators were due to the large front vents on the car. This is a very attractive feature but has a habit of collecting wet leaves etc which can result in hefty bills if the dreaded tin worm gets to the radiators. Also when driving at the national speed limit (like all good Porsche drivers do) there is a chance that a rocket propelled stone could take out a rad. I have seen lots of aftermarket kits which sit on the outside of the bumper and although they do the job they are not the most aesthetically pleasing thing and for me would spoil the appearance of the 997s front end.

Steve came up with the solution that I think provides the best of both worlds, he fabricated grills from stainless steel mesh which sit behind the bumper but in front of the radiators. These provide the protection I wanted without compromising the look of the car. I opted to leave the mesh in stainless finish but Steve tells me that this could easily be painted to suit; I think its spot on. Whilst I was away the car was stripped down ready for bodywork prep and I gather that the only part which was a real sod was the removal of the rear side windows as these are effectively riveted into place and took a huge amount of patience to remove without breaking the very expensive glass.

Whilst the car was in prep Lakes invited their paint supplier to visit to take samples and details of the original paint so that they could get the specification absolutely right. Steve knows just how fussy I am with my cars and did not want to leave anything to chance. The paint suppliers did a great job and matched the paint perfectly. The car was with Lakes for about three weeks in total which may seem a long time but I didn’t mind as they are perfectionists and the car looks fantastic with its new coat of Macadamia Brown metallic. The car was delivered to me in person by Lakes having had several coats of wax and it was so clean I thought that they had left the glass out! Alas the car is not so clean now, as I have done nothing but drive it ever since. To say that I am chuffed would be the understatement of the year.

Lorne Campbell enjoyed a trackday at Goodwood in October Aside from a little vibration under braking, it went well … We were lucky with the weather and the track was dry all day. I had my friend, Dave, as a passenger and we arrived early, got into the sound check queue and the 944 S2 was then tested after we had signed on. They test at three quarters of max (red line) rpm with the sensor one metre from the exhaust outlet. It was a 105 db day but our reading was ~ 98 to 99 db so well under. 105 db is pretty loud but some (including a 911!) were borderline. Having grabbed a bacon roll after the briefing we took to the track. Those unfamiliar with the circuit get taken round by the chief instructor, but the majority of us had been there before. I took the first couple of laps fairly easily, as normal, to get car and self warmed up. Once we started to increase speed, however, it became apparent that despite not slowing excessively hard – I allow a good distance – there was a vibration problem under braking. This hadn’t been apparent on the road and was not noticeable when we drove home at the end of the day. The discs and pads are standard, and the immediate thought was warped discs, or pad transfer, but I realised that it had started AT / 121

happening before the disks had had a chance to warp, and that also the vibration was coming mainly through the steering and not the brake pedal. Stopping was straight with no pull to one side. The car, incidentally, was running on standard road tyres at standard road pressures. If I got through the Lavant corner fast enough we were just touching 120 mph at the end of the Lavant straight, so I was slowing from a much higher speed than the car normally has to cope with. The consensus of opinion is that being put under much more strain than usual, it is the lower front wishbone bushes (maybe also anti-roll bar bushes) that are the cause, so replacement bushes (possibly poly) are probably required. Running at normal road speeds is no problem so this will be checked out at the next service after Christmas. Although the above was a little annoying, it didn’t stop us enjoying the day, which was great fun despite the fact that there were only about three cars slower than us. The car went well in all other respects and sounded good, but there were a number of ‘modern’ 911s,

BMWs and similar machines (also a Nissan GT-R). There were a few classics (and a modern Citroen hatch), most of which we were quicker than, although one beautifully set up Healey 100, which had been tuned to about 200 hp and weighed about 450 kg less than us, slowly caught us, so I let him by. I think the car was fitted with track (or semi-track) tyres, and seemed to have a little more cornering speed. I had the dampers on the 944 replaced with Konis last year, so they are OK. They are adjustable; the rears have to be removed for adjustment and I have them permanently set at 50%, but the front struts can be adjusted from under the bonnet. On the road, I run with them at full soft but on the track I finally decided that the handling was best with them set at full hard. I forgot to slacken them off before driving home, however, and they were certainly fairly ‘teeth rattly’ on the road! The car certainly doesn’t seem to have suffered on the track, and I will be having a look at bushes and, perhaps, slightly harder brake pads (for a little more bite) before taking to the track to get my ‘fix’ again next year.

It was the morning after the Anglia & North Essex region BBQ hosted by Steve & Lorna, (a lovely day in the sun was had by all, fed and watered to the extreme), that we had planned our short trip away to Snowdonia. A relaxing break from the humdrum of the daily grind … little did my wife, Mandy, know that I had pencilled it in as a scouting trip for a regional weekend away. That was until the discussion of which car to take popped into the conversation, and my plan was rumbled! With the weather forecast for the Southeast sunny and hitting the 30s, we headed for the beauty of North Wales and light rain, if there is such a thing in Wales! With a late start to miss the morning rush, we all headed off (all three of us, me, Mandy & the Mad Pig), and sure enough as we passed Shrewsbury the sky darkened and with the last few petrol stations without super fuel, we headed to Welshpool which had Tesco Momentum confirmed. First thing to consider is fuel! With a full tank, it was off into the wilds and to our hotel, the Royal Ship in Dolgellau. The Royal Ship was an excellent choice, warm and friendly. Our room was large, comfortable and clean, but the car park was very tight … if you could get a space at all, as it was a first come first served rather than residents only. Second thing to consider, parking! After getting some local knowledge, we set to planning the next three days. The weather was turning for the better for the rest of the week. We arranged to meet up with my brother Neil the next morning at the best roadside café in the country at the Rhug Estate & Farm shop, via a non-direct route around Lake Vyrnwy. Now the third thing to consider is navigation! You will need a satnav, don’t rely on your phone. When it says one hour to do 30 miles it isn’t telling porkies; we arrived fashionably late … Sorry Neil! Rhug Estate & Farm shop had a fantastic café and we were pleasantly surprised at the prices. After picking my brother’s back-road knowledge it was off for a lap of the Evo Triangle, which happened to be hidden in a cloud when we arrived! Be warned there are cameras and Police dotted around the route, because of a few pushing the limits too AT / 121

far! With that done it was off on one of Neil’s magic mystery tours skirting yet more lakes, epic scenery, and open moorlands with wide sweeping roads that could be driven with a little gusto! Arriving mid-afternoon at Porthmadog for a top up of fuel and food, we then went back to base via Harlech Castle, yes the very same one from Men of Harlech, the unofficial anthem of Wales. The next day with the sun out it was off to Caernarfon Castle via yet another indirect route (cheers again Neil) with a little light shopping and a boat trip out onto ‘The Swellies’. We then stormed the castle, with Mandy staying mostly at ground level whilst I charged up and down every tower. Our route back to base ran via the Llanberis Pass which is rated in the top ten best driving roads within the UK … Fantastic! Then on to Capel Curig, Betws-y-Coed and the A470 to Ffestiniog and Dolgellau for a wonderful meal and rest before the big outing tomorrow – to Mount Snowdon. Up early, packed, with a hearty breakfast, we were off to Snowdon, with a good spirited drive via another route through the Llanberis Pass which was clear-ish, and it was off for our ascent of the mountain. It was a hard, long slog up that track to the top! Oh, what a train ride that was! And we had the weather as well, as we arrived at the summit the clouds lifted, the sun shone, and I was King of the mountain (along with a hundred or so other people, Hobbits, and Dwarves). The views were spectacular. Then back on the train for our descent with views of the Llanberis Pass over 2,000 feet below us. We headed off for a cream tea and yet another run up the Pass. Then off to the Mines of Moria (well, the ancient copper mine of Sygun) to get a feeling of being hundreds of feet under the mountain! Then finally back to the Royal Ship for our last night. Up, breakfast and off homeward via Lake Vyrnwy. We had an excellent short break that felt a lot longer. Recharged and reinvigorated, and with a last splash of fuel at Welshpool, it was off home, raining all the way. A pilgrimage to the home of Porsche is probably on the ‘bucket list’ of most enthusiasts. It’s easy to get to, and visitors are well catered for, with Porsche’s own museum as well as a factory tour.

In September I took a trip to Stuttgart to visit the Porsche Factory and Museum with a couple of old school friends who also own Porsches. We had to pre-book the tours prior to arrival, at a cost of eight euro each. Excellent value. As instructed we arrived at the museum 30 minutes prior to the tour to find an excellent café and two restaurants. Whilst waiting for the tour to begin we spent some time looking through the glass wall to the well equipped workshops where the museum exhibits are regularly serviced and repaired. The museum building was opened inJanuary 2009 and the design was selected from over 170 entries from all over Europe. Even if you didn’t like cars it was worth the trip just to see the building; it is an incredible design. Very modern with clean lines and seems to float above the ground with mirrored tiles on the underside. The factory is just a short walk across the road from the museum so very little time is spent outside in the weather.

The factory is amazing; very clean, quiet and well organised as you would expect from German engineering. The whole production line is fed from computer controlled driverless electric vehicles which are optically directed to different sections of the production line. All types and colours of vehicles go through one after the other, with all parts being added by teams of technicians. Parts arrive by road just in time to feed the production line. Two shifts work eight hours each in the factory, with the majority of cars being built to order. The tour takes about two hours, and on completion we stopped for a well earned rest with coffee and cakes before entering the museum. The cars and exhibits in the museum are all numbered and the audio recorder provided has all the details of every exhibit, you just punch in the numbers as you go and can repeat as required or take any route. It’s very flexible. The visit was of particular interest to me as a 928 owner, because the museum had a special Transaxle Exhibition featuring the 924, 944, 968 and the 928. There were some excellent examples of all these cars with detailed history provided.

One in particular was the ‘Long Version 928’, which was built by the Porsche Weissach Development Centre and was 250mm longer than the standard 928.The extended wheelbase, plus changes to the B Column and door frame, resulted in 200mm more rear leg room. The car featured projection headlamps, a steep hatchback, leather interior and green tinted windows. On September 19th 1984 the car was presented to Ferry Porsche on his 75th Birthday. There was also a cutaway 968 showing all the detail of the mechanics, plus an all wheel drive 944 on its side, also showing all the mechanical details. There was of course a complete history of Ferdinand Porsche's achievements with his early developments of racing through to the war years and beyond, developing the rear engine cars with which everybody is familiar, with the Beetle and the 911 probably the most popular. There were also many racing cars from the 1980s on display, featuring the 926/962 six-times winners at Le Mans.

PORSCHE CLUB OF AMERICA WERKS REUNION

2016 saw the third running of this event and it took place at the Rancho Cañada Golf Club on California’s Monterey Bay Peninsular as part of the Monterey Car Week. With over 1,000 spectators’ Porsches plus almost 600 in the special display area and an additional 150 in the concours this is a big one make event by any standards. Following on from the successes of 2016, the planning has already begun for what will surely be an exciting Porsche, Picnics and Prosecco journey for all. Before we look forward let’s take a moment to reflect on what we as a club achieved in 2016. In Spring we took flight to Germany taking in the Essen Classic Car Show, and at home we enjoyed a track evening at Knockhill, had a delightful lunch at the Allanton Inn followed by a visit to the Jim Clark Motor Museum, finishing of the April with the Classic Car Rally at Bridge of Allan. The summer months enjoyed kind weather and the lighter nights allowing us all to enjoy a fistful of events including an Angel Wax detailing demonstration, the well-attended Historic Motor Extravaganza at Thirlestane, Tayside Classic Motor Show, Moffat Classic Car Rally and Glamis Castle Scottish Transport Extravaganza. The region’s annual BBQ and concours was a huge success with everyone enjoying the burgers and fruit kebabs, AT / 121

chocolate desserts and great selection of drinks. The Show and Shine presentations finished off a great day. Some members travelled south for the Silverstone Classic Weekend. In August, we were invited to display member’s cars at the Ignition Festival of Speed in Glasgow which saw an average of 25,000 members of the public visiting per day. Members also took part in the Porsche Parade with highlighted the Porsche 911 with cars from the 1969 911T to the 991 GT3 RS being driven at speed around the streets of Glasgow. Certainly one of the highlights of the season for the club and one we hope to be given the opportunity to partake in again. Our summer wouldn’t be complete without the largest gathering of Porsches in Scotland with ‘Porsche in the Glen’ which saw a record number of vehicles on show. A credit to our very own Brian Woods. Autumn saw a run through the Scottish glens bringing the season to a close with many members tucking their cars away before the cold, wet and salty weather was upon us. November was another highlight with several members visiting the NEC Classic Car Show. We had a great turn out at our 10 Pin Bowling night – congratulations to the winners, you know who you are. We finished off 2016 with our annual Christmas Dinner at the Open Arms Hotel, Dirlerton. What can I say, I’m stuffed. An excellent night of fun, laughter and drinking with friends new and old.

Meetings are held on the second Monday of the month from 7pm (with club business dealt with at 8pm) at The Railway, 35 Wigan Road, Euxton, PR7 6LA (01254 209841) Regular attendees will know that we’ve been using The Railway at Euxton whilst waiting to see what happened with The Boatyard’s refurbishments. After a meeting with the new manager I am sorry to report that the North West region will not be returning there anytime soon. The current plan is to stay at The Railway for the time being and for the second Monday to become our regular club night to avoid the problems we used to have with bank holidays. Once again I’m indebted to the Hammerton family who opened their home to the club ahead of this year’s Christmas tea. Several of us met at Great Harwood for mulled wine and seasonal treats before driving to The Garden Kitchen at Holden Clough for a rather ‘busy’ afternoon tea. Many thanks to all who came along. Our December meeting included the now infamous annual quiz, once again expertly written by ARO Colin Hammerton. It was won, by a one point margin, by the Cross/Pollard/Kendal team so well done to them. Prizes were kindly donated by attendees and the good burghers of Porsche Centre Bolton and Jasmine Porschalink. During our December meeting both myself (Richard) and ARO Colin took on another year ‘in office’ so I need to thank you all for your

confidence in us. Simon stood down as ARO and Darren joined us as ‘the new boy’. Thanks to Simon for all his efforts over the years and I look forward to having Darren on board. As far as club activity for 2017 is concerned I’d suggest that you can expect ‘more of the same’ with plans for one or two more guest speakers, a one-off ‘factory’ venue for the February meeting, and a charity casino/race night in April. We’re already planning this year’s Longest Day Run which I’m hoping will be a true coast-to-coast affair which I think will be a first for our region and maybe even for The Club. Darren will be looking at interesting car shows to attend and plans are in place for a spring ‘inter-region’ brunch meet to include the North West, Cheshire & Staffs, SYNN, North East and the newly formed Peterborough region. I was saddened to learn that Dougie Groves passed away on December 15th. He was the subject of our ‘bucket list’ event last year which saw 17 Porsche cars gathered to offer him passenger rides in his favourite marque. Representatives from our region attended his funeral service with their Porsche cars and were thanked by the Groves family. Even with winter arriving, we have had a busy time within the region. A number of new members have joined Cheshire & Staffs (welcome to you all). Some of us have been tinkering on our cars, others have tucked them away for the winter, whilst some have been out on various adventures. At the last minute the club was offered a stand at the Neil Howard Stages Rally and Fireworks display at Oulton Park. It was an enjoyable day with opportunity to watch the rally and fireworks, and to support club member Barry Stenhouse who was competing in his Mini Cooper. Our region was also represented at the NEC Classic Motor Show with Dave’s 914 on display amongst a great mix of Porsches on the TIPEC stand. The stand also had some celebrity Star Wars visitors from our club insurers, whilst Jonny Smith from Fifth Gear and Alex Riley from The Classic Car Show appeared keen to talk 914! The last weekend in November saw the annual 928UK sharkfest take place at the Merry Miller in Oxfordshire. Three TIPEC 928s met up with two PCGB owners en route to a gathering of 38 Porsche 928s. Not a sight you see every day. On 19th December six Porsches and a VW (imposter!) had a scenic drive across to RAF Cosford for a photo opportunity under the wing of the AT / 121

Nimrod outside the museum. Given that she organised it, we let Stef’s Scirocco muscle in on the end! It was nice to see other visitors to the museum admiring our cars and taking a keen interest in the club. We would like to extend a special thank you to Matt Smithers for arranging the photo opportunity – just a shame you didn’t have your 968 with you. A group of 21 sat down for our Christmas meal at the December meeting. It was good to see faces old and new. We discussed events for this coming year, some of which are still fluid. We have lots planned and have also agreed to do more in 2017 with neighbouring TIPEC regions. In addition, we hope to arrange a road trip to the Spa Classic and Nurburgring in May. NEC Classic Motor Show Three members (Pete, Pete & Dean) made the trip down to Birmingham for the usual affair with some great classics and autojumble. Porsche had a huge presence this year with Porsche Classic showing some great restorations that had been done by the OPCs. The transaxle display was fantastic with a beautiful 924 in green really standing out. The yellow 1973 911 RS was also something to be proud of, now restored to as-new condition. The TIPEC stand had some pretty impressive vehicles as did the PCGB area. Gmund cars fetched along some very rare machines with very rare prices too. The standouts were a red 993 GT2 which you might have seen in some of the Porsche magazines and a Yellow 968 Turbo RS which I never knew existed. SYNN Christmas weekend away Three couples (Dean, Joanne, Ray, Katharine, Andrew & Val) made the short drive to Leeds for the weekend away. An early start meant we arrived with plenty of time before check-in, so we decided that the ladies would go shopping and the guys (and Val) would visit Porsche Centre Leeds where we met up with Peter & Ann. What a treat that was – not only new cars but classics as well, and we were treated to a peek inside the workshop, where Jay Kay’s 911 had the engine out. Val spotted her next 911 and Ray was licking the windows of the 918 Spyder (not literally). Early dinner at BiBi’s was very nice but the wait between courses was a bit too long, and don’t get me started on the 10% service charge – bad enough on the meal but on the drinks bill as well was taking the mickey, especially as Dean brought them from the bar himself.

Early start the next morning to search out breakfast – Katharine soon found a Patisserie Valerie so she was happy, and I must say the eggs benedict were superb. Suitably refreshed it was time for walking and shopping (guess who did what?) and we spent a while avoiding hundreds of Santas doing a charity run around the city centre. Before long it was time to check out, pick up the car and back home. Another great weekend guys, can’t wait for the next one.

We had an excellent turnout for the Christmas meal at The Bull’s Head back in December, and we will continue to use this venue for our monthly meet in 2017. We will be trying out a Sunday breakfast meeting at Garden Centres in the area, this will hopefully see wives and girlfriends come along and join in as most meetings are car (and maybe a bit male) orientated, so bring along your other half and they can have a mooch around. We look forward to seeing you in 2017.

The brand-new Peterborough region kicked off with its first club night on December 14th. I turned up in my Cayman, Michael in his 944 and Neil’s very new to him 911 (997). Not a bad start. Then as we got into a conversation, one by one more and more stunning Porsches came past the window. A couple more 911s, a couple of Boxsters, another Cayman and another 944. All in all, a really nice mix of new and old, which also was matched by the drivers with a good mix of ages too.

Everyone left with a smile on their faces and looking forward to the next meeting on 11th January 2017. By now we will have started planning our adventures. We already have a long list of events and trips for the year. All in all it was a great evening!

Old cars were brought out of retirement with original owners. With a large box of spare parts, we managed to get a few moving. The Fred Flintstone Mini was a non-mover as its tyres had turned to stone. One of the F1 cars needed its engine (and its rear axle) replaced every time it crashed by the pit crew, which was often. Of course, it was Porsche that took the flag with an early 930 with working lights and all! Our Christmas meal was held on the 4th of December at the Woolpack. We filled out the back room with club members. Sam and his wife, who could not attend, kindly donated some wine for the meal (thank you Sam, it was much appreciated). The food was great – loads of turkey to start off the festive season. We also held a raffle on the night for club funds. Typically our newest club member won the prize, which was two three-course meals for two kindly donated by Graham our landlord.This was won by Adam & Sarah Jiggins. I can’t remember a great deal about the afternoon but it was quite dark when we all left and the nominated drivers had to pour

their partners into a couple of the cars … so a great afternoon was had by one and all. Ian & lzzy squeezed into Steve’s 964 Turbo on Boxing Day for a trip down to the Ace Café. After a quick game of Twister untangling ourselves, we were out and off for a nice cup of Rosie and some proper food whilst watching more cars arrive on a quite chilly night. It was then out and about for a butchers and a rabbit. (Sorry, all those Christmas reruns of Fools & Horses.) Then it was back on our toes in the jam jar and up the frog & toad …

Firstly, sad news; Tony Jones, one of our original members when we reformed the region, passed away in November after a sudden decline due to PSP syndrome. Tony’s wife Veronica invited us to attend his funeral in Stevenage along with members from the TR register where he was also a long standing member. We heard about Tony’s passion for sport, cars and sailing. A real character, Tony’s wit will be missed. I attended the NEC Classic Car show on Friday 11th November; as always a great show and our colleagues from the Midlands and the board

were there for the full three days manning the TIPEC stand. I finally treated myself to a dual action Polisher; I’ll be practising on my old Range Rover before venturing near the classics! I attended the annual 928 gathering at the Merry Miller in Oxfordshire; as always, a good turnout with cars from across the country. November and December were quieter months as the weather deteriorated and nights drew in. The December meeting at the Goat was blessed with fine weather after a dull start and a good variety of cars were on display. The November meeting at the Ace Café was dry and cold and of course, dark, but a surprising batch of cars turned out. I couldn’t make the Ace Café in December as it clashed with holiday and Peter was visiting family. The Goat meeting was a forecast washout so cancelled from a TIPEC perspective. Members were invited to join us on a driving activity day at North Weald airfield on 17th March; spaces were limited and members had to make their own booking, so we’ll look forward to catching up with some of you on the day.

We were treated to a full corporate day that included a tour of the pits and behind the scenes and even a few laps in the safety car, plus food and drink during the day. I’m sure Martin & I will be attending again this year, hopefully with a group from our region.

Something slightly different for our November meeting at the Novello … we had a Scalextric night and what fun it was too. Our ARO, Graham Driver, most kindly brought along his stunning Scalextric set with a lovely selection of Porsche cars, the 917K and 934 being the cars of choice. We had a Top Gear style leaderboard and with 10 timed laps we took the overall time giving us our winner of the night, Peter Hillocks …Well done to you Sir! It did turn out to that Peter is a Scalextric enthusiast and boy, he sure knows how to drive! Our Thames Valley Christmas bash was once again held at the Calcot Hotel in Reading with a good number of members in attendance enjoying a fun ‘glitz’ evening – always a good excuse for us gents to don black tie, and the ladies their best frocks of course! A wonderful night had with lots of dancing and frivolity along with a few too many drinks (not

mentioning any names but you know who you are)! A big thank you to all of you for coming along, I hope you had a great night … here’s to next year … cheers! Our December meeting, the last for 2016 at the Novello, was another busy one, enjoying a mince pie or two whilst nattering about all things Porsche! It was great to see so many turn out especially as the weather was a bit miserable and some of us were struggling with a bout of sickness! Just because the winter months are upon us, it doesn’t mean we can’t clear out the cobwebs. We do get some bright and sunny days so get your Porsches out … they do love a good drive! The Thames Valley region has had a good year with many events and meetings. I think I can safely say we have all had some fun during 2016. We have a number of upcoming events to look forward to with the monthly Novello meetings taking place on Tuesday 14th February and Tuesday 14th March. We are planning a number of Sunday morning breakfast runs, a detailing day, a suspension day, a curry run, a picnic, and we have the summer Novello meetings to look forward to along with Simply Porsche, Silverstone Classic, Classics at the Castle, and Goodwood Charity Day to name but a few … Please keep an eye on our diary page of our website at www.tipec.net/regions/thames-valley or our Facebook page (TIPEC – Thames Valley Region). We held a Sunday breakfast club on 20th November where 10 of us braved the stormy weather for a hearty breakfast. On Saturday 26th November Porsche Centre Tonbridge hosted our winter car health check; we had 12 members’ cars up on the ramps for inspection from a Porsche technician.

We were back at Porsche Centre Tonbridge on Monday 5th December for our Christmas club night where we had a good turnout of around 40 members and guests who enjoyed Tonbridge’s kind hospitality. On 10th December we held our Christmas party at Brands Hatch for their Christmas Grand Prix Ball. 36 of us wined and dined the evening away followed by a jazz singer and then a disco until the early hours. Everyone seemed to have a great time, some more than others!

Andy Dorrington won a Porsche for the weekend donated by Porsche Mid-Sussex and Eben Hugo won an original watercolour, donated by our artist in residence, Christine Forbes (aka Stephens). The raffle raised over £150, which the Porsche Centre matched, so over £300 will go to Cancer Research. From the start of February, Wessex region will be changing its name, venue and meeting date. The map of the current region and its members cover the county of Hampshire, so to better accommodate the members, we have moved the venue to a more central part of the county near Basingstoke. The change of name also is a far better description for any prospective members as the Wessex name really covers the area now taken by Southern region. It has taken a while to find a decent venue and we are pleased to have found a very nice pub that has a car park for over 100 vehicles and serves up some good quality and reasonably priced food. They also have some nice ales on tap for those lucky passengers. The manager is a keen car fan and has given us a choice of locations in the pub that we can have to ourselves. We hope to confirm the team in charge of the region after the first meeting but a few people are already keen to be involved in the new region. It may well start as a small committee. To start with I will run the meetings for the first few months until things are settled. If you haven’t been along to a meeting before or for a long time, please come along and say hello. A final note on 2016 is to say a massive thank you to all those who supported our end of year charity raffle. The final amount for The Great Western Air Ambulance from just that Christmas draw was £575 making a total of £738 during 2016. The general consensus seems to be that this is a very relevant and region-wide charity for us to support so we will continue to have them as our main fundraising beneficiary.

Normal format approx 100 miles on lesser-used roads. £50 per vehicle to include breakfast rolls, lunch at the finish, and detailed route book. The community centre next door to the school will be open for drinks at the finish. Second half of September TBC I am thinking of planning a trip north into Scotland similar to our previous trips to North Wales, Isle of Man, Ireland, etc. If you are interested please just let me know so I can get a rough gauge of the potential numbers.
