All Torque 128 Apr/May 2018 I will start this month by saying

thank you to everyone that attended the AGM at the Transport Museum in Coventry. A few hardy souls came in their P-cars and parked in front of the museum, which was covered in snow. Watching Ian Jones trying to park his newly acquired Cayman R provided a little bit of entertainment for those sat in the coffee shop waiting for the museum to open. This is the first time that the deadline for my ramble and the AGM are on the same day, which is the perfect opportunity for me to share the highlights from a very positive and enjoyable meeting. Enthusiasm for the club was evident and it was really nice to see everyone contributing to the discussions. We spent a large part of the session discussing how we communicate to the wider Porsche community and how the club can best support the regions. It is clear that the regions with a varied events calendar, that use all of the media channels to let people know what is happening, have had the biggest increase in member numbers. That is a great reward for all the effort that is being put in. Not all regions are seeing member growth and we will be supporting those regions over the next few months. I would like to welcome Paul Ffelan to the Committee as Media Director. Paul has a strong tech background and will help support the website upgrade and manage our online content. Lindsay Brown will be managing our Valuation Service, taking over from Gina Purcell who did an excellent job, thank you. Paul Bird presented the accounts, 2017 delivered a modest surplus improving the cash at bank. Financially we are in excellent shape, the base was reset after the additional costs of a managed membership system and paying more dividend out to the regions. In light of the above, I am pleased to report that membership fees will remain unchanged until the next review in 2019. Paul also took us through the new Data Protection laws, not a sexy subject but we now know what we have to do to be compliant.

The magazine is our greatest expense at £19,000. Everyone agreed that the magazine was excellent and that we must continue to produce it. It was suggested that we should make the news section more enticing by using photographs to accompany the text. I explained that advertising revenue is down – I do not push it too much so that we have plenty of space for content. Increasing the pages beyond 40 increases postage costs significantly. Ironically this issue is a little thin, due to a lack of articles. The next issue will be our 25th Anniversary Edition and we need your help to make it special. It would be great to hear from members that have had Porsches for over 25 years – most marriages do not last that long! There must be some tales to tell … If you would like an electronic copy of the minutes from the AGM please send a note to cluboffice@tipec.net and I will forward a copy on. The car show season is almost upon us. It should not be underestimated the positive impact that our displays have on promoting the Club. I am sure many of you will have had a conversation with people saying that they had never heard of us before. Please support your local car shows, we estimate that around 25% of members join after first encountering our club at one. With Spring just around the corner (it does not feel like it as I type this) we start to think about taking the covers off our pride and joys. Do not forget that there are a number of detailing specialists on the discounts page of the magazine. Not only do they sell a range of products, they will gladly take your call and answer any questions about the right products or methods to deal with a specific problem. If you are still using a yellow sponge and washing up liquid, you need to change your cleaning regime. We have a great club and it’s all down to you, our members. Thank you. Sean

News & updates Northern-ish Gathering 2018 April 15th (Sunday) Hoping to build upon the success of the first Northern-ish Gathering in 2017, club members from the North West are making plans for their next big inter-region gettogether. Designed to be a season-opening break fast meet, the second Nor ther n-ish G ather ing will take place on Sunday April 15th at The Wellington Public House, Wetherby Road, Leeds, LS17 8LZ. Last year saw 54 Porsche cars take part and the organisers are hoping to equal or exceed that number this year. There are also plans for a gentle country drive in the afternoon for those who don’t have to rush off. Keep looking out for detailed updates from your local Regional Organiser as April approaches!

A small selection of the cars at the first Northern-ish Gathering

The new 911 GT3 RS Porsche are raising the performance bar, again A new GT3 RS is always cause for celebration. As Porsche’s most track-focused 911, it sits at the top of the model range. This latest iteration was launched at the Geneva Motor Show on March 6th, after being teased to the motoring press in Finland, driven on ice by Walter Röhrl. As ever, the RS is tauter and more precise than the current GT3. Elastokinematic bearings on the suspension arms are replaced by ball joints and the rear axle has been recalibrated. The cost-free optional Clubsport Package adds a roll cage, fire extinguisher and six-point harness, as well as allowance for a battery disconnect switch. Everything you need to feel like a race driver. The Weissach Package replaces many parts with carbon fibre and offers magnesium wheels, bringing the weight down to 1,430kg. The star of the show is the car’s four litre naturally aspirated flat six, but the wide body and traditionally huge fixed wing command their share of attention too. AT 128

DRAGON PIE

Chris Wickers fell head over heels for Porsches quarter of a century ago, and finally has one to call his own. Author & Photographer Chris Wickers

Some 25 years ago I was invited, as a dealer, to

the launch of B&O’s new AV9000 system at the Belfry, joined by Porsche UK with test drives available. There were too many people there to view/drive and both activities were raffled. My ticket wasn’t chosen to see the new system (the key reason for going), and I thought well at least I can drive the Porsche. I failed there too – what a wasted day. However, determination got the better of me, and seeing the lunchtime line-up of Porsches with the white 928 at the front I pleaded with the Porsche UK Sales Manager to take me out. The rest is history – this was a life changing moment when it came to cars, and ever since that day I have wanted one. I often wonder how Porsche did out of the day and whether they sold any cars? Well they did sell at least one, but not until 25 years later. In my early 20s, on taking out a critical illness policy, there was a query as to why, and why the sum chosen, as I was single with no dependents. The salesman was somewhat shocked when I explained that if I contracted a critical illness I needed enough to buy a 911! The family too never escaped. It’s customary to discuss religion, politics, children, etc with the future wife … I did all this and added I wanted to have a Porsche one day. It didn’t stop there – my mother suffered my love of Porsche too. With her being disabled we spoke/ met pretty much every day, and often twice a day. ‘Hi Mum how are you?’ often got her stock response of, ‘I am fine the Porsche will have to wait’. This really shocked anyone who was listening; with her explaining that she knew as soon as she had gone I would buy a Porsche – something she clearly approved of.

AT 128

Last August, the ’phone wasn’t answered when I called, a neighbour was on scene in less than a minute and paramedics less than two minutes later. A blue light dash to Broomfield, emergency blue light transfer to Queens Neuro department at 2am, and an emergency operation were all in vain. (We all knock the NHS but at this time they were beyond perfect, with the only gripe being hard chairs in the waiting room!) In December my Mother’s house was sold. It was an emotional time seeing the family home go. I decided some ‘retail therapy’ was needed and found two local Porsches to go and view – one in Southend, and one near Lavenham. The one in Southend was stunning until a close inspection revealed the poor modifications done to it, and a full service history at a back street garage with a five year gap. Time to go to Lavenham. It was a blue Carrera 4, right spec, right price, and right condition – the first impressions of Pie Performance were not what I expected. It is not your glossy, high profile, swish glass fronted Mayfair showroom (who incidentally I bought a Polo shirt from and their customer service is first class), however what it exudes from every nook and cranny is a passion for Porsche, from engines stripped down to the last nut and bolt to the cars for sale. There is something special about a business when it is apparent the staff don’t just work there, they are actually part of it and live and breathe Porsche. On dealing with Chris, Ash and Jason, it was clear that if I chopped their hands off there was Pie/Porsche blood running through their veins.

It has been such a proud feeling exhibiting at the Sunday morning events at the Warren. The fact that it is a 14 year old car pays testament to Porsche’s build quality, and I just can’t help grinning every time she starts up. The plate is my parent’s initials – it seemed appropriate given it was their hard-earned money which paid for the car. It has the Bose sound system, which is still outstanding, and certainly gives the Bang and Olufsen I sold years ago a run for its money. The grip on the road, the handling, and of course the thump in the back acceleration have all added to the enjoyment, although it is also perfectly happy being driven gently around town, and I can now understand people’s comments that they can easily be used as daily cars.

Having always bought second hand cars, colour has never been top of the list, however the blue and tan just didn’t do it for me, and I really wanted the wider back. I knew they had a silver Carrera 2 (which I had discounted as the spoiler in the picture looked massive and out of place) which was under a cover as it was waiting an engine rebuild. The cover came off, the factory fit spoiler didn’t look wrong (cameras do lie), and at that point I decided it was mine. I wanted it. The condition was fantastic, really fantastic and it just looked right.

MY DAUGHTER LUCY HAS WORKED OUT THAT IF SHE ASKS FOR A LIFT ALONG THE LINES OF ‘DAD CAN YOU TAKE ME TO XYZ IN THE PORSCHE?’ IT NORMALLY WORKS!

What didn’t seem right was buying a car I had discounted previously, and one I couldn’t drive, just because the first wasn’t for me. Jason agreed, and suggested I think about it – The only car salesman who hasn’t tried to close the sale there and then. Must be a first, surely? Driving back, the plan was to think about it overnight and call the next day, but all I could think of was what I would do if it was sold. I only got two miles down the road, when I phoned and left a deposit. Buyer’s remorse often sets in with car purchases but not this one, aside from a little bit when seeing the car totally (and I mean totally) in pieces wondering if it will ever go back together properly. The 911 has been the highlight of the last six months, and has bought a massive amount of pleasure not only to me, but to my closest friend whom I have also insured on it.

One of the considerations over the past 25 years whilst dreaming of owning a Porsche has always been as to whether to get manual or automatic. Mine is Tiptronic and I am really pleased with the choice, and the fact that I can drive it as a manual should I so wish – the flexibility makes the drive that much more pleasant. The intention was only ever to use it at the weekend, however I now look for every opportunity to take it out, and my daughter Lucy has worked out that if she asks for her lift along the lines of ‘Dad can you take me to XYZ in the Porsche’ it normally works! I could insure her on it now that she has passed her test but at £15,995 – perhaps not? My insurance (had to get another policy as I have a daily car) comes in at £599 – there is some advantage to being 50! The MPG ranges from 32 to 17 depending on driving style, but if driving normally with a bit of fun then around 22, with standard road fund tax due to age. Servicing is offered on a fixed price basis and in many cases, is less than my Volvo. To date over the last six months the only expenditure (apart from polish etc) has been to have the headlights refurbed at Chaplane in Colchester – they look like new now. Car Clubs have been a massive part of my life for the last 29 years, and I am currently Vice Chairman of the Volvo Owners Club (if anyone wants advice on Volvo 480s please let me know – you have to love them as the phrase ‘trouble free motoring’ has been removed from their dictionary) – so it is only natural that I would contact and glean as much advice from TIPEC as possible – thanks guys! It really is very much appreciated. I was never in the position to buy a new Porsche, and as such running costs, what to look out for, etc were and are all very significant concerns. The reassurance was very welcome. So as everyone told me – do your research, buy on condition, and buy from somewhere reputable. I would (like the vast majority of people) give up everything I own and more to have my mother back, but that is not an option – hence the Porsche. Finally, I must explain the title – my mother was always nick named the ‘Dragon’ (unfairly as she was a very kind person – however she found it funny and perpetuated it) and therefore ‘Dragon Pie’ seemed an appropriate title as without the Dragon’s legacy, and without Pie Performance I would not be proudly owning my Carrera … 11

AMERICA VS PORSCHE Top left: 1994 Andial/Porsche endurance car in later (and highly successful) LMP1 98 form. Top right: 1980 Interscope IP-1 Indy car. Its engine went on to power a Le Mans winner. Far right: The engine of the 2708 that was subsequently used in a number of March chassis.

Every country looks to protect its own interests,

but some are more proactive in doing so than others. America has always had a tendency to be that way inclined and under its present administration it is probably more anti-outsider than at any time since the war of independence – and that finished in 1783! This attitude has sometimes percolated down to the level of sport and I can think of at least four occasions when the ostensibly level playing field of motor racing has been significantly tilted to produce a home advantage against Porsche. America is a big Porsche market today and has been important ever since Max Hoffman, the New York importer of interesting European cars, began to market the products of the company as surprisingly early as 1950. Post-war in America imported sports cars were a very popular choice in competition and Porsches quickly joined those ranks. It was at Hoffman’s instigation that the racing-oriented 356 Speedster was born and Porsches were exponents of ‘win on Sunday, sell on Monday’ before the phrase was invented. The Canadian-American Challenge Cup (universally known as Can-Am) was a series that began in 1966 and catered for racing sports cars of Group 7 type but with few restrictions, even engine capacity being unlimited. It was a big hit with spectators who not only loved the fast and noisy machines but also the many big names of the day that drove them, not just Americans but others too. Porsche first became officially

AT 128

involved at the behest of its works 917 driver Jo Siffert in 1969 and although already heavily committed to their own projects the works created the 917PA (for Porsche-Audi, by then the US importer) for Siffert to use in the series. While outclassed by the established opposition he finished fourth overall in the championship and from little acorns … Although Porsche had a very successful year internationally in the World Endurance Championship in 1971 (seven wins from nine starts), for 1972 a three litre formula was to be introduced. With years of development time and money invested in the 4.5L and 5.0L 917 Porsche took the decision not only to also use the car in the Can-Am series in 1971 but to develop a specific variant, the 917/10. During the course of the year the model (which had become turbocharged that July) came to the attention of US entrant Roger Penske and his driver Mark Donohue and a plan was hatched for a Penske-run factory backed team to contest the series, in much the same way that the JW-Gulf team had done so successfully on behalf of the factory in Europe. This proved to be a very worthwhile partnership, with the 917/10 taking the championship in 1972 (six wins from nine races) and the 917/30 version victorious in 1973 (eight out of eight!) These were the only championships taken by a non-Chevrolet-engined car during the original 1966–74 series, but for 1974 the rules were changed in respect of fuel consumption, allegedly to promote ‘equality’ although that had not been an issue when the McLaren-Chevrolets

had previously won the series five years running! Porsche considered their options but decided to withdraw, the fact that they could not easily meet the 3mpg now required giving some idea as to just how thirsty their 12-cylinder turbos were. The new rules also contradicted a provisional agreement that had been made between Porsche and the organisers, so the message was clear. In some ways though Porsche had the last laugh. In 1975 using a specially prepared Penske 917/30 Donohue broke the record for the fastest speed achieved on a closed racing circuit at over 221mph, smashing the figure recorded by the American pairing of A J Foyt and a Coyote-Ford Indy car. However, Porsche was soon to fall foul of the US regulationchangers again. Porsche had not had much luck in its previous singleseater ventures, three years in GP racing netting just one Championship race win. In 1977 they began to look seriously at a very different type of open-wheel formula, competing in the Indianapolis 500, although even before any concrete plans had been laid the Americans began reacting defensively. Perhaps the memory of their recent all-conquering Can-Am campaign was responsible for this. With an important market in North America, a win at Indy would provide invaluable publicity and the decision was made to build a specific engine to do the job. The Interscope team, run by Porsche 935 racer and businessman Ted Field and also successful in Indycar racing, were chosen as a chassis partner.

Right: The final MarchPorsche, the 90P. It was a case of too little, too late. Below right: The other 1990 March 90P CART team car. After a sponsorship deal fell through Porsche advertised in the Wall Street Journal for a backer and Fosters came on board

The engine was initially fitted into a modified (and aged) Parnelli chassis in 1979 for testing to be carried out prior to the projected 1980 Interscope IP-1 being produced. However, throughout the development period the US rule-makers were wrangling over the amount of boost pressure that the Porsche engine would be allowed and this continued until the engine was installed in the new Interscope chassis in mid1980. Despite pressing for the designed boost pressure to be allowed the Americans were adamant that a much lower figure would be the limit and as this translated into a loss of 25bhp and 10mph the project was reluctantly curtailed. The only bright spot in this saga was that a version of the new engine was adapted and married to the 1970s 936 (brought out of the Porsche Museum collection!) in a last-minute plan to attempt overall victory at Le Mans in 1981 – but that’s another (successful) story. Given their experiences so far you might be forgiven for thinking that a further American-specific venture might have been looked upon as less than desirable by Stuttgart, but the US was still their largest market and one where domestic racing publicity would certainly not go amiss. Thus it was that in mid-1985 Porsche began to design another single-seater as a CART (Championship Auto Racing Teams) contender. This time they would be responsible for the engine and chassis, although it was over two years later that the complete car – type 2078 – first turned a wheel. The car began racing with far too short a development period and the decision was soon made to fit the power unit into an established

March 88C chassis in a ef for t to shor t-cut a way to competitiveness and results. While the March proved to be of more use than the factorydesigned car it became apparent that using the equally popular Lola chassis would have been a better bet, but the die was cast and for 1989 March designed a specific chassis for the Porsche engine, the 89P. This gave Porsche its sole CART victory and in a way that must have reminded the company of its previous F1 experience. Following a natural path of development, for 1990 March created another Porschespecific chassis, the 90P, which took advantage of a new rule that allowed an all carbon-fiber monocoque, only for the rulemakers (in this case a confederation made up of the racing teams) to postpone the rule change for another season. With this decision being made in early 1990 March were left with far too short a time frame to come up with a new and competitive design and this left the cars struggling during 1990, Porsches best plans having once again been destroyed by outside (and quite likely deliberate) intervention. They say that lightening does not strike twice, but in 1995 it struck one of Porsches American racing projects for a fourth time. In All Torque 124 I told the story of the Le mans-winning Porsche WSC95/LMP1 98 models and rather like the 1980 Indycar engine referred to above, their success at La Sarthe came out of discrimination in America.

In 1994 there began a joint project between US Porsche racing specialists Andial and the factory to build a low cost sportsracing contender for the Daytona and Sebring endurance races. Most unusually this was based on the redundant Jaguar XJR14, although with extensive modifications and the fitment of a Porsche 3.0L flat six. The first of the cars duly appeared at the pre-Daytona trials and despite being seconds slower than the opposition – as backed up by their telemetry – the team was accused of deliberately holding back. Once again, the American organisers – this time the IMSA – were very wary of the new contenders and despite the figures showing that the car was as yet uncompetitive they imposed a restriction on the engine induction and also increased the minimum weight. Apart from ensuring that the new car would remain totally uncompetitive these changes were imposed only nine days before qualifying, so once again withdrawal was the only option. Despite all of the foregoing Porsche have enjoyed many notable successes in US racing, but for all that you cannot help but gain the impression that these might have been even greater had the regulations not been re-written to discriminate against them on so many occasions.

The 2018 Season started with a dinner at The Railbridge Bisto, South Queensferry celebrating ‘Rabbie Burns’ and enjoying the traditional haggis, neeps and tatties. Well attended and certainly well enjoyed. Our first meeting of the month was well attended with 30 members and six Porsches bearing the cold, dark winters night for a get-together, having a coffee and enjoying the banter. Heated discussions kept us warm and agreement to use ‘Doodle Poll’ as the platform for booking events has been well received and working well. The visit to Peter Vardy Heritage Centre, Edinburgh saw 10 Porsches and 15+ members enjoying the hospitality whilst viewing some iconic investments. A beautiful 1973 Porsche 911T (£129,000) caught the eye as did many cars on show/for sale. Our second meeting was held at the Red Lion, Burley in Warfedale on February 19th. We had another good turnout and this time the lovely folk running the pub provided chicken goujons (nuggets?) as well as chips – and I’m told the food will be even better next time. Again we discussed possible events and those the region and the club have planned. The second Northern-ish Gathering on April 15th is a major one on the horizon, but our next event was less than a week away … … Meeting at 10:30 and on time at JEM Speed Shop in Batley, around 30 Porsches from Yorkshire and North West TIPEC regions arrived and filled the street outside the motorbike showroom/diner/ retro-store/barber/bar (is there anything that they haven’t managed to squeeze into the place?) and tried to find the car park (oh dear).

Visit to Peter Vardy Heritage Centre

It turns out there had been a mix up between our event and another planned by the Ford Owners Club. Oh well, we all found a spot either on street or in another car park down the road and piled into JEM Speed Shop for some grub. For many, me included, it was a first visit. It turns out it is an interesting place with lots to look at considering the limited space, even for those less interested in things petrol related (the kids particularly enjoying the Doctor Who-esque Police box).

were clear and the sun was out, it was also freezing cold – so, after a chat and photoshoot, we drove on to the Dog and Partridge, where the fire was blazing, for a hot drink to warm us up before heading home. All in all, it was a fun and enjoyable day out, and one we can improve and build on during the year. In further news we are currently planning a trackday at Blyton Park on June 16th. Meetings are held last Thursday of every month from 7pm at Gilpin Bridge Inn, Bridge End, Levens, Kendal, Cumbria LA8 8EP. As many of you will have noticed, the name above has changed. Big thanks to outgoing RO Paul Lowther. Paul has decided that he has a little too much on his plate to be RO at this time but we wish him well and are sure he will be back and active soon. Steve has very kindly agreed to lend his support and I look forward to working with him and all of the club members to continue the impressive start the region has had. We have had two more of our popular club nights at the Gilpin Bridge – as ever a wide selection of Porsches in the car park despite the cooler weather. Full marks to our matching brothers John & Graham Bath with their brace of Guards Red 997’s for brightening the evening. Plenty of chat and good food has been enjoyed on both nights and I trust we enjoy many more. One or two of us joined NW region for breakfast meets through the winter months and we are very much looking forward to meeting up again for the Northern-ish gathering on the 15th of April. Of course we won’t just see NW there but all of us from the post-apocalyptic wasteland north of Watford Gap … Just before than we will have our next club night on 29th March at the Gilpin Bridge – Alan Aspden will kindly be giving us a presentation of his Porsche based European exploits to whet the appetite for some summer touring. Please do join us for what I am sure will be an entertaining and inspiring evening. Looking a little further out, anticipation is building for the seventh International Cumbria Motor Show on 20th May. Places are limited, please remember to register before 1st April as this is the closing date.

Due to the continuing winter up north there has been very little to report. Other than the usual club meets and the guys going out to celebrate a few of the local club members birthdays, it’s been a little quiet on the northern front. I can only expect that this means we will all be itching to get our cars out at the first glint of sunshine. I know I am looking forward to having my 944S out. I think I will have to attend to some issues this year around the nearside sill, before it hits the road. If you have any little jobs that need sorting come to the club nights for advice whether your looking for a recommendation or those little jobs your going to tackle yourself, like help on getting your heated mirror working again. Several of the members are automotive technicians and might be able to help or point you in the right direction. We do have a new Porsche launch to look forward to in the coming weeks and TIPEC North East will have a member there to check out the latest on offer from our new local Porsche dealer.

We’ve had a successful start to 2018 in the North West Region. We kicked off with our (now traditional) New Year Run on the 7th January. This year George Pollard kindly offered to take charge of proceedings and he (ably assisted by Yolly) led a convoy of 20 Porsches and one BMW through local and not-so-local countryside all the way to Hebden Bridge and beyond on what must’ve been one of the coldest mornings of the winter. We finished up at the Pack Horse Inn, high on the moors above Hebden Bridge, for lunch. We had a couple of visitors from the Cumbria Region, including Dean Mason who did 365 miles on the day. Thanks to George and well done to Dean! January’s Sunday Breakfast Meet took place on the 28th at TC’s Café on the Southport/Tarleton road. With a massive attendance of 30 people, 17 Porsches and Jo’s MX-5 the event was a great success and I’d like to thank everyone who makes an effort to attend these get-togethers. Our February club night at The Bowling Green was noteworthy for attendance: 35 people filled our room to capacity and I’m confident it was the largest gathering yet for our ‘ordinary’ club meeting. Whether you drive your Porkers in both the Summer and Winter months or you have a winter set of wheels, like many other regions alike Cheshire & Staffs kicked off our fixtures for 2018 with our fourth annual New Year Drive. The morning meeting point saw 10 Porsches and a BMW 850csi take to the Peak District roads to blow the cobwebs away. The fresh New Year morning had already seen Tony exploring the scenic roads having set out super early to enjoy the morning sunrise in his 944 Turbo … so we set out to enjoy the open roads. The morning was going so well until we stopped in Tissington Trail for a pitstop and counted up a total of three Boxsters, a Cayenne and a 718 Spyder in the car park, meaning only one thing … there was a 924 Rothmans, 968, 928, and a BMW 850csi still roaming somewhere around the moors! So after a stop for a cuppa and the magic bookshop half the convoy headed together to lunch, whilst the lost Porkers hunted lunch out themselves. Thankfully everyone regrouped and finished a lovely drive off at Sutton Hall for some lunch. January club night was a fun quiz night. I have to say the ladies help the menfolk fantastically – well done girls! It was a mixture of ‘name the car part from Gareth & Stef’s Workshop’ as well as ‘name the Porsche sound’. Next time I think more clues may be required! Congratulations to our winner who received a free Cheshire & Staffs Calendar. This was the last of our trial club nights at the Kilton Inn – now we head to the Three Greyhounds. February saw our brave region members attend the Dubfreeze VW show at Stafford County Showground, where we had two Boxsters and a 928 representing the Porkers and two modern VW Siroccos plus a MK2 Golf representing the VW side of the club members classic/modern car passion. The weather was extremely cold, though this didn’t put the mad campers off who camped the night before, nor did it off put the early start. There were fellow Porsches and VWs alike on display and an enjoyable day was had. Once the show had ended, a convoy of a 928, Boxster S and two Sciroccos headed for a refuel for the drivers and passengers. Our first of three club nights at the Three Greyhounds was another excellent turnout and an enjoyable evening was had chatting all things Porsche and planning not only the regions road trip of the year to the Le Mans Classic, but also planning a list of events for the region for 2018.

We’ve had a rather eventful couple of months here in Peterborough. Our resident pub, the Golden Pheasant in Etton, had to close unexpectedly due to a wiring fault the day before we were due to go for our January meet so we decided to bring our curry run forward and mix curry with business. The meeting was a great success and the change was enjoyed by all who joined us. We once again found we had to switch venue due to a refit in February and an impromptu change of ownership so the Ruddy Duck in Peakirk was the substitute meeting place, it’s a very nice village pub with good food. We had a good chat about all things Porsche, discussed the year ahead and went through the things everyone would like to do over the coming months. Neil Kenefec has kindly volunteered to help coordinate our Simply Porsche trip. The venue of the March meet is yet to be decided and further details will be sent out. Stuart decided his Cayman wasn’t noisy enough so took it down to our friends at DW Performance for an all in retrofit of the PSE system. Not a mean feat as both seats had to come out along with most of the boot interior. All in a normal days work for Kev Waterhouse. We are now entering the pub quiz, albeit not doing very well – but don’t worry our time will come! Central were invited by East Mids to an open day at Leicester OPC. It was a freezing Sunday morning but a warm welcome awaited us from the staff, and the cars on display were sensational. I fell in love with a GT3RS, but the Cayman GT4 was also gorgeous. February’s club night was well attended with 20 people venturing out on a cold damp night, and again we entered the pub quiz, we’re getting better, reaching the final this time. I’m telling you, our time will come! We had another Coffee morning at Wyvale, Shenstone which was well attended with 13 turning up, we will travel further now the weather is improving. April sees us having a curry night at The Lodge, all welcome, just let me know to book your places. We are also going up to Leeds for The Northernish Gathering. This is something I’m personally looking forward to, hopefully last years total of 54 cars will be beaten. If last year’s Donington Historic Festival was anything to go by this year will be fantastic. See you there on Sunday. Use our discount booking (see the news pages at the front of the magazine) to get half-price tickets. The second May Bank Holiday sees us on our annual trip to The Ace Café – always a great day out, last year there was over 80 cars turn out. Come along and join our convoy down.

Meetings are held fourth Tuesday of each month from 7pm at The Woolpack, Fornham St Martin, Bury St Edmonds, Suffolk IP31 1SW. 01284 753 380 www.thewoolpackfornham.co.uk With 2018 well underway, plans are afoot to liven up the year. We plan to meet up with Surrey & Sussex region on their weekend away in our area in May. Also, with our run up to Whitby in June we will be meeting up with the local region there. Many thanks to Ian & Therese for organising.

The January meeting at the Goat was very well attended with a great array of classics, hot rods, muscle and modern classics. It was a very bright sunny day, but freezing if you steeped into the shade; they are a stalwart group that turn out for classics at the Goat! The ACE Café gathering in Januar y was surprisingly busy for a cold but dry evening. The February meeting had the added interest of the first flurries of the ‘Beast from the East’ snow, so driving to and from the ACE needed care; that said there were still over 30 hardy souls with their pride and joy on display, showing Porsches are not just for the summer!

London Classic Car Show at Excel

Meetings are held first Monday of the month from 7:30pm at The Carpenters Arms, Three Elm Lane, Hadlow, Tonbridge TN11 0AD. www.carpentersarms.net The first gathering of the year was our January club meeting when, on the first Sunday of the month, a great turn out of more than 30 members tucked in to breakfast. This was sadly Martin & Kim’s last meeting as joint RO & Joint ARO, although they are going to continue to attend as regular members. Martin awarded the Member of the Year award to Rachel which was a great surprise to her!

Porsche Owners UK Facebook group meet

The London Classic Car Show at Excel was in a bigger single hall, which made the runway even longer for the display cars to strut their stuff. I visited on the Friday which is a little quieter than the Saturday and Sunday, but I found more than enough to keep me in the show from opening at 10am to close at 5pm. Peter attended the inaugural Porsche Owners UK Facebook group breakfast meeting on Sunday 18th February at the Akeman Inn on the A41. It was a good turnout – three dozen cars, kind weather and a sizeable car park. There was room for plenty more! The meeting started at 10:30 and all Porsche owners and clubs are welcome. Having spoken to one of the organisers at the Ace recently, it is their intention to hold these meetings regularly, but frequency to be confirmed. We’ll post the dates on the Facebook events page for our membership, so why not pop along if you’re free?

A group of us descended on a local bowling alley at the end of January for our annual bowling competition. It was taken very seriously with some even bringing their own balls, which was rather impressive! Congratulations to Andy Bush who was this year’s winner. For the second year running David Lawrence kindly organised the RH&D Challenge; here follows his write up of the event. The day of the second Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Challenge dawned dry and sunny but bitterly cold, ideal conditions for a photo competition. The aim of the competition was to take pictures of your car, the car driver (yourself) and the early morning RH&D train at as many different locations as possible along the 13.5 mile route from Dungeness to Hythe. The RH&D miniature railway opened in July 1927 and has a 15inch gauge. During the post-war

Looking forward, we have decided to focus our attention on the Donington Classic as our Spring event; we’ll return to Duxford another time. Check out All Torque for details of the club presence and let me know if you need a discount code for entry. Our friends in Peterborough are very active with runs out for breakfast etc and have invited us along, let us know if this is of interest. Simply Porsche, the club’s main annual event, is on Sunday June 3rd at Beaulieu National Motor Museum as usual. To take the stress out of an early start for the opening, it’s a great part of the country to spend the weekend. Peter and I have booked our B+B rooms for the Saturday and Sunday, giving us scope for relaxed road trips on the Saturday and Monday. Rooms sell out fast, so if a weekend interests, book soon. If anyone would like to join a group run on the Saturday or Monday, contact myself or Peter!

years, it fell into disrepair, but was saved from closure by Sir William McAlpine in the 1970s. It is now a thriving tourist attraction running throughout the year. Seven cars took up the challenge: five 911s of various vintages, an MX-5 and an electric Nissan Leaf. Drivers with a passenger had a clear advantage over solo drivers but a good time was had by all. The winners were Grant & Natalie who managed to pip second place Nigel & Pat (brother and sister-in-law to Grant) by one point. Sibling rivalry in action! We had a fabulous start to 2018 with a good turnout of members and non-members alike at our first monthly meeting at the Novello. Great to see a few new faces joining us. Both Graham and I unfortunately missed the February meeting as we were away on our winter holidays, however we understand the meeting was another good one for the time of year. Egg on toast … Our first planned breakfast run to the Blackbushe Café on Sunday 28th January was as popular as ever. A good drive out with eight cars enjoying a spirited run. It is not the longest of drives but does have a good mix of roads, and we were met with about another eight or so cars at the café! If you haven’t already done so, come along and join us for the next one – a good breakfast, Porsches, and great company; you won’t be disappointed. Big sausages … Something a little different for the Thames Valley region. Together with Peterborough and South Central we organised a breakfast meeting at the Super Sausage Café near Towcester on Sunday 25th February. Graham and I met up with a dozen or so of the Thames Valley members at Oxford Services for 8am. From there we had a steady 45 minute drive to the Super Sausage Café, meeting for 9am. 25
