All Torque 129 Jun/Jul 2018 Happy 25th Anniversary. The Club was started in 1993 and had its first major challenge in 1994, when the founder tried to sell it to Porsche GB or close it down. Fortunately a group of members stepped in and decided to run it themselves, funding everything out of their own pockets. The acknowledgement of their sheer determination to save the club is long overdue and I very much doubt we would be celebrating 25 years without them. Many thanks. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone that is and has been involved with the management of the club. At both a national and regional level, a lot of hard work has gone in to getting us where we are today. Looking back we have only had an outsourced membership service for the last couple of years. We used to have someone voluntarily processing all the memberships, sending out renewals etc, etc. The number of regions has increased and we are more active now than we have ever been. There are several pockets of the country that we do not cover. If you happen to live there and would like to get something going in your area, please drop me a note. For a small car club we have always achieved a great deal and that is down to the goodwill of some great people. A very warm welcome to those of you that have come across the club for the first time and picked up this special anniversary issue at one of the many car shows that we attended during the year. The magazine will give you an idea what the club is all about, but the best way is to attend a local club night.

I am often asked; what is the difference between the two clubs? My stock reply is that we are both very similar in many ways. We attend the same car shows, benefit from the same discount schemes and have a very good relationship with the dealer network. We are smaller and less corporate, which maintains our informal approach to everything that we do. We do not separate cars; modern or classic, we view all Porsches equally. People make a car club enjoyable, it is the cars that bring us all together. As an example of the above, I am writing this column from a hotel bedroom in Florence. It was at a club night that a group of us decided that it might be fun to drive the Mille Miglia. In fairness, the driving has not been quite as exciting as we had expected. Some sections of the route have been way too busy and the condition of them appalling (I will never moan about our roads again). Roads aside, we have had a great time. Lots of banter with a brilliant group of people. I will share more details of our adventure in a future issue. If ever ything has gone to plan, you should be reading this in advance of Simply Porsche at Beaulieu on Sunday 3rd June. Seeing over one thousand Porsches parked in the delightful grounds of Beaulieu, is worth the discounted entry fee alone. The drive through the New Forest, and all the other attractions that the venue has to offer, makes Simply Porsche so much more than a car show, with lots to do for all the family. It would be great to see you, I guarantee you will have a fabulous day out. We have a great car club that is in good shape. Here’s to the next 25 years. Cheers, Sean.

News & updates Practical Classics Classic Car and Restoration Show Paul Bird reports from the TIPEC club stand. We were at the PCCRS again at the end of March for this ever growing classic show. Much more low key than the November show at the NEC but a great day out and a chance to get those tools and parts for your car project! Thanks to Pro-9 for the loan of the former Wheeler Dealers 944 Turbo and to Pete Leason of Center Gravity Ltd for the loan of his 944. A barn find on our display in 2016, the car is now in regular use and got lots of attention at the show – saved from scrapping and now a much loved family car! My 924 Martini made up the trio of display cars and we spent some time cleaning off 30 years of filth to see the state of the paintwork underneath – thanks lads for all the help. Thanks to the team that worked the TIPEC club stand for the duration of the show – Lindsay Brown, Neil Smith, Paul Foster, Paul Webster, Chris Harrison and Pete Leason. (Photos by Brian Rowledge.)

Silverstone Classic 2018 July 20th–22nd (Friday–Sunday) The Silverstone Classic is one of the main events of the year for TIPEC, and our Chairman Sean’s personal favourite. It’s a weekend of spectacular historic motor racing on one of the world’s greatest circuits and you can really get up close and personal with the machinery and the drivers. As well as the qualifying on Friday and the racing Saturday/Sunday, attendees get free access to the paddocks and grandstands, displays from over 100 car clubs (including TIPEC) and more than 10,000 classic cars in total, dynamic demonstration drives and interactive activities for all the family, live music from big name headline acts on Friday and Saturday nights, air displays, a vintage funfair, and a host of shopping opportunities. It’s a big weekend whether you’re displaying your car with the group from TIPEC or just attending as a spectator, and we can’t recommend it highly enough.

On Sunday 9th April John Adams, Boxster owner and member of the Club’s North West Region, married Carrie Shepley at The Dunkenhalgh House Hotel, Clayton Le Moors. 125 The KKK Turbocharger (Kuhnle, Kopp und Kausch AG) was larger than that fitted to the 930 road car. It was centrally mounted at the rear of the engine, upon an aluminum cross member, which had been fabricated to replace the rear cross member of the 911 shell. The previous cross member had been cut out to give space for the engine and its plumbing. A Garrett wastegate was used, mechanically controlled from the cockpit. The engine’s inlet manifolds sat atop the cylinder banks, each equipped with an injector and a

If you enjoy Martin Broadribb’s article on Porsche’s 935 race cars in this issue of All Torque and want more detail on the subject, then this is the book for you! Whilst this is billed as a complete history of the 930 Turbo and all its racing derivatives, John Starkey quickly dispenses with the roadgoing car and gets stuck in to the racing models. On those, he is fascinatingly thorough. It’s a clearly written history, taking you from Porsche’s intended retirement from GT4 racing and Martini’s insistence that they stay involved, through their series domination and passing of the torch on to customer teams … with those teams eventually developing their own variants way beyond Porsche’s original spec. The one disappointment is that barely half the book is so entertaining – the rest is taken up by lengthy but impressively thorough appendices listing the chassis history and race results of every individual car.

Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo Officially faster than an F1 car After three consecutive WEC Drivers and Manufacturers double championship wins, including three outright Le Mans victories, with the Porsche 919 Hybrid, Porsche have retired from LMP1 class competition. Just for fun, Porsche decided to see how fast the 919 could go when unshackled from the WEC regulations … Porsche took their 919 Evo to Spa for a weekend of test laps. The car was based on developments originally intended for the 2018 race season, and then taken further. Removing the WEC fuel flow regulator raised HP from 500 to 720. Electric assitance was raised from 400 to 440 HP. Reworked aero provided 56% more downforce. A four-wheel brake by wire system was added, with revised power steering. Michelin developed new rubber for the tyres. In this car, works driver Neel Jani lapped Spa in 1:41.770 minutes, 0.783 seconds quicker than the fastest ever F1 lap, set by Lewis Hamilton.

THE

WOMBLE Sarah Hughes took TIPEC’s South West & South Wales Region all over South Wales. They went underground, overground … Author & Photographer Sarah Hughes

Officially this

was going to be the South West and South Wales Welsh Heritage Day but I thought that was a bit boring when it came time to create the route booklets. Brian and I live in Wales and had offered to create a day out to show off the great driving roads around the Usk and Wye valleys and some of our local Welsh heritage attractions. So, as we were going underground at Big Pit mining museum, over ground at the Blaenavon Ironworks, and both attractions had free entry, it was very hard not to remember the Wombles song. Suddenly the trip had a name! We have been out with the region on many day trips and longer excursions in the past but had never been the ones creating the trip. When we came up with the idea for the day out, we thought that maybe 15 to 20 people might be interested so we were amazed when about 40 people said “count me in”. Just goes to show how supportive our members are of events like this. Reality then set in – I had never realised quite how much is involved in creating a day out. It is surprisingly difficult to create a route, find places to eat and visitor attractions and make it all work together. However, after a couple of hiccups due to events clashing in the area we wanted to visit, and several trial runs, finally the big day arrived – Sunday 15th April. AT 129

The day started with 20 cars and 38 people meeting up at the Coldra Beefeater where most of us opted for a hearty breakfast before setting out to explore. In true Welsh fashion, the rain decided to make an appearance – spitting during the early part of the drive and raining more heavily later on. With cars dampened, but not our spirits, we wound our way along through the countryside via Usk and Raglan to reach the Blorenge mountain near Abergavenny. The route up the mountain is known in the cycling world as The Tumble – a 512m climb to the top, often at a one in 10 incline (rather them than me!) Unfortunately, by the time we arrived at the top we were in the clouds. A few brave souls ventured out at our planned viewpoint for a quick look before we headed down the other side to our first attraction – the Blaenavon Ironworks, a CADW (Welsh Heritage) site. After a slightly soggy group photo we headed in to explore, and for many, get a nice hot drink! The staff kindly provided us with a guide to show us around and explain about the ‘pig’ iron that was made there. The metal is really called cast iron but the way it ran into the castings on the floor was thought to resemble a pig suckling and so the name came about.

TOUR After the guide had finished we had a quick discussion about the rest of the planned drive. This was meant to be a scenic route to Big Pit via another mountain climb. Given the low cloud level and the continuing rain, most of us opted to skip the drive and have more time to explore the Ironworks and the mine. A few couples still decided that they would like to go for the drive rather than go underground so they set off. Fortunately my directions worked and they all made it to Big Pit a little while later. For the rest of us, we went around the workers cottages which had been recreated to reflect different decades and then met up by our cars for some homemade cakes and biscuits. I have a bit of a reputation for baking for our events, so it seemed only right to continue that. A short drive later and we all arrived at the Big Pit mining museum. Over 30 people chose to take the underground tour and, as it wasn’t too busy when we arrived, were lucky enough to fit into two groups. The tour is very interesting. All the guides are ex-miners, so they have plenty of stories to tell along the way.

The tour is made even more realistic as you are kitted up with a hard hat and torch along with a gas mask. Although the mine no longer produces coal, it is still classed as a working mine and the proper precautions need to be observed. The ceiling is quite low in places, so the hard hats were definitely essential and your only light underground comes from your torch and those of the other 17 people underground with you. After a rather chilly hour underground, everyone emerged into the warmer rain to explore the above ground exhibitions and enjoy a welsh cake or two in the Pithead canteen. Despite the weather, everyone did their best to make the most of the day and we all agreed that we needed to try the drive again on a nice bright sunny day!

RACE RETRO

Just as Winter comes to an end (allegedly), the first signs of Spring emerge (hopefully) and Race Retro comes around once again.

Author & Photographer Brian Rowledge

In addition to the outdoor spectacular a number of world famous drivers and personnel made appearances. From the world of two wheels was Steve Parrish who gave on stage interviews and was accompanied by two of his Suzuki bikes.

Race Retro is an eclectic mix of the past

for diehard petrolheads; none of this diesel or battery powered nonsense. It is a feast of a bygone age of two and four wheeled sport. Exhibits range from world championship motor cycles to historic F1 cars. The highlight of the event, held at Stoneleigh Park, is the live rally stage event put on by Group B Rallying. This year just under around 80 rally cars took part on the Saturday and Sunday; of these 20 were Group B cars. Was it a live show? Yes it was. Was it processional? No it wasn’t. Stoneleigh is one of a few events where the drivers can let their hair down and drive without fear of a prosecution for speeding. Let it rip they did and as a consequence a few cars were damaged and one was rolled. Who said this show lacked entertainment?

AT 129

Others giving on stage interviews were Brian Redman who flew in from USA especially for the show. In addition to Brian, Rosemary Smith, Paddy Hopkirk, Tony Jardine, Tony Mason, Russell Brookes, Norman Dewis OBE, Matt Neil and Miki Biaison also gave interviews The static displays gave us some spec tacular machiner y. One of the highlights was a McLaren M14a, Dan Gurney’s last F1 car. Also on show was the Ford Sierra Cosworth that was driven by two time World Championship winner Miki Biaison.

Well, after that do you fancy being a rally driver? Perhaps not possible at the show, but you could sign up at the show for a passenger experience; only for the brave or slightly mad! Since this event has been taken over by Clarion Events it has grown in stature year on year. Now the indoor sections are very well set up and there is still the autojumble for those looking for that elusive part or tool. I remember first going to this event in 2012. Since then it has improved significantly and attendances are higher than ever before. This year over 23,000 people attended the show and no doubt next year will be even better. Roll on Winter 2018!

ONE OF A FEW EVENTS WHERE THE DRIVERS CAN LET THEIR HAIR DOWN AND DRIVE …

NORTH COAST WEEKEND TIPEC’s Scottish Region regularly make the most of the amazing roads on their doorstep. John Davidson reports from a recent run up North. Author & Photographer John Davidson

Our weekend

started at the new Perth Porsche Centre with members meeting there for coffee . We were treated to a full guided tour of the new facility, given by the new principal, before we left to drive to the Scottish Highlands. In true TIPEC Scotland style we used all the back roads we could find, passing through two of Scotland’s finest skiing areas at Glenshee and the Lecht, through to Inverness then over the Strouie … dropping down eventually to the Invershin Hotel and Bunkhouse, our weekend base. I’d like to thank the owners, Cheryl and Angus, for their warm hospitality and welcome. On Saturday we enjoyed a run out along sections of the North Coast 500 route with a beach walk and lunch in Tongue, finishing with a spectacular drive across the country estate back to the hotel. Roads were empty, dry, and in very good condition. The weather was top-down quality both of the two days with a little light rain on Sunday. Our drive home on the Sunday took us past Loch Ness and another ski centre in Glencoe, finishing with a total distance of around 600 miles and some very happy members. Roll on the next road trip and enjoying more of what Scotland has to offer. 11

MEMBERS CARS

It’s almost two years since Paul Bird last reported on his Martini 924 restoration (issue 117). Time flies when you’re having fun? Author & Photographer Paul Bird

ANYTIME ANYPLACE ANYWHERE? I think it’s fair to say this car has thrown up some serious

issues and setbacks along the way. Initially the plan was to try and get the engine running on the basis that the engines in these cars are fairly ‘bulletproof’. Unfortunately, this wasn’t to be the case. At some point in the past the cylinder head had been removed and left off for a considerable period to allow water ingress. The bores were rusted so badly I had to source a donor engine! One was found through the 924 Club and was a ‘good runner with no leaks’ so was duly fitted into the car only to find a serious oil leak from the back of the cylinder head once it was running! The cylinder head was removed, and the original head sent off to be skimmed and then mated to the donor block.

The car has been fitted with a replacement fuel tank, fuel lines, fuel distributor, metering head and injectors. The braking system has been completely rebuilt. In addition, all the major suspension components have been replaced with OEM parts working towards getting the car through an MOT and back on the road. Sourcing some of the parts has been a big headache but Simon at Pro-9 has been a big help with the more difficult items. Trim parts for Martini cars are almost non-existent and advice on various forums suggested original door mirrors were going to be a real problem. At some point one of the previous owners decided to fit aftermarket electric mirrors and these must go if the car is going to end up as original as possible. I searched everywhere without success until AT 129

I spoke with Thomas at Werk924.com. I contacted Thomas about the seats as Werk924 have the last of the original Martini seat materials. I ordered a full set to replace the tired ones in the car. I mentioned door mirrors and he said he would speak with a few contacts on my behalf. A couple of weeks later he got back to me having sourced a pair of original mirrors and although pricey they were a great find.

THE BORES WERE RUSTED SO BADLY I HAD TO SOURCE A DONOR ENGINE!

Needing to get the car back on decent tyres I had the original wheels soda blasted by Soda Blasting UK Ltd who do a lot of work for Car SOS. I have to say I had great service and would not hesitate to recommend them. The wheels came back and went straight to the paint shop at Scrape Escape. Kevin did an excellent job and the newly painted wheels were matched to a new set of tyres ready to go back on the car. Rust on the windscreen pillars and on the rear hatch locks has been cut out and replaced by Pro-9 and we’re almost at the point of getting the car to an MOT test. Once through its MOT the intention is to use the car regularly, although she will still look rough, and start to sort the body issues and prep for a respray. The rest of the restoration project will be on an ongoing basis over the next couple of years until I am happy with the car. Keep your eyes peeled for a tatty looking 924 at this year’s events!

GOODWOOD 76TH MEMBERS MEETING The finest classic racing event of the year? John Rampton thinks so … Author & Photographer John Rampton

The first time

that I attended Goodwood Members Meeting was last year for the 75th MM. It was the first year that nonmembers could buy tickets. This year I’ve joined The Fellowship – it’s a cheaper way to be involved with the GRRC without the expense of being a full member. You don’t get as many benefits but it does enable you to get tickets for Goodwood events. MM is more exclusive, and to me far better than, any motoring event I’ve been to before. The Saturday starts with a hunt going off from the track and then it’s straight into the practice and qualifying on track. Later on the Saturday afternoon is the first race. This isn’t some made up, just for show, racing. This is full on, take no prisoners racing. The drivers and teams take it seriously and it’s amazing to watch! The race I was most interested in was the Ronnie Hoare trophy with no less than six 904 Carrera GTSs! SIX! RACING! That’s unheard of. Something that you expect to maybe see one of in the Porsche Museum (if you’re lucky) racing in anger on track was something I counted myself extremely lucky to witness. I’d arrived early to have a look round and found myself heading straight to the vendors to find a warm hat, unlike last years chilly but bright event this year it had decided to snow … If the 904s where not an amazing enough sight walking through the paddocks, I found something even rarer; the ONLY 935 Special Wishes road car! Mansour Ojjeh commissioned the car and it was factory built using 930 and 934 parts to create a roadgoing Group 5 Car. Despite the cold weather Goodwood’s amazing event wasn’t dampened. The many firepits dotted around kept you defrosted and old style canvas tents and teepees filled with amazing food and drinks stalls (including ‘hot gin’ to warm you from the inside out) made it even more enjoyable. Other events would have been cancelled in such weather but not this. The displays still took to the track with 935s, including the 935 Moby Dick car, led on the first lap by the 935 Straßenversion. Keep an eye out next year for Members Meeting in March as it is not something to be missed even if you only enjoy it by watching online from home, in the warm. 13

NORTHERN EXPOSURE CLUB EVENTS

AT 129

The second annual Northern-ish Gathering saw TIPEC regions come together in fine style. Author Richard Sholl / Photographers Richard Sholl & Richard Harwood

On Sunday

15th April 90 Porsche cars attended The Wellington Public House just outside Leeds for the club’s second Northern-ish Gathering – a breakfast meet for club members from any region located vaguely ‘up North’. With members from the North West Region, Cheshire and Staffs, Yorkshire, Cumbria, South Yorks & North Notts, the North East Region, Peterborough, Central, South Central & East Midlands in attendance you could argue that we’ll need to rename the event to ‘Midlands and Northern Gathering’ next year! The packed car park and buffet style breakfast kept everyone entertained. It was proved that sometimes the simplest plans work best, with attendees happy to chat about all things Porsche as the early mist lifted and people noticed the immaculate 924s, the GT and RS models and even a near-new British Legends ‘Derek Bell’ edition 991 Carrera GTS. In fact the car park held at least two 964s, a 993, John Biddulph’s wonderful Carrera that is now a

road car rather than his racing car, an early Cayenne, two GT4s, several burbling 928s and a plethora of Boxsters and water-cooled 911s. Detailed route-notes were given to every driver so they could take an interesting cross-country drive, late morning, to Knaresborough where the proprietors of Gmund Cars, RPM Specialist Cars and Reep Detailing were happy to let club members look around their respective showrooms and workshops and take advantage of their tea, coffee and biscuit supplies! The Club wishes to thank everyone who came along on the day and made the second Northern-ish Gathering a success (last year’s 54 car attendance was beaten quite comfortably). Specific thanks must go to TJ Hammerton and Diane Sholl for working the gate at The Wellington and to Colin Hammerton (North West Region ARO) for organising the venue, the run and the open mornings at Knaresborough almost single-handedly. We’re already planning next year’s event which will be even bigger and better.

Here we’ve gathered three ‘type 997’ 911s – two Carrera Ss and a Turbo – from the club’s busy North West Region to learn a little more about life with a 997. Author & Photographer Richard Sholl

First up, Lee’s black Turbo: a self confessed ‘child of

the ’80s’, Lee grew up in a Porsche household, with his Dad owning a 924 Le Mans and his bedroom wall displaying the ubiquitous ‘911 Turbo’ poster. Fast forward 30 years and he’s sold a rental property, raised some cash and treated himself to a rather lovely Atlas Grey 997 Turbo.

Now, the car you see here is Basalt Black, because the first Grey turbo was the victim of an arson attack whilst in the care of Porsche Centre Bolton after only four days of Lee’s ownership. Understandably devastated that his Turbo love affair was over almost as soon as it started, the team at Bolton (take a bow Steve Webb, Adam Calvert and Jon Challis) have managed to find what Lee now calls ‘a superior replacement’ and that’s the Turbo you can see in the pictures. 997 Turbos left the factory with a high specification level, thus this car has a sunroof, rear wiper, multi-function steering wheel and suchlike. Lee’s 2007 car also features electric memory seats, red seat belts and interior carbon trim pieces. Unlike the two Carreras here, the AT 129

Turbo features the wide 997 body (+44mm across the rear arches) and four wheel drive. Lee’s car is simply a very nice example of the breed with the added benefit of being an ‘approved used Porsche’ covered by a comprehensive warranty.

In his care since January, Lee is looking forward to using, showing and enjoying his Turbo this spring and summer. He’s a driver and a polisher, so if you see the car about you can bet it’ll be looking it’s very best whilst he adds to the current 42,000 miles covered. Now into his seventh year of ownership, Richard’s Carrera S is another Basalt Black 997. Described as being ‘a member of the family’ you can tell that this car has been responsible for many adventures on the road. Richard reports; “We’ve taken her to the Nurburgring several times, Italy twice and driven many of the Swiss Alpine passes more than once. At home she’s done track days at Three Sisters, Blyton Park and Oulton Park and been as far north as Scotland and as far south as Cornwall.” This 2005 997 has evolved gently over those seven years and currently rides low on Eibach springs and wheels from a later Carrera S shod with ‘blooming noisy, but very grippy’ Michelin Pilot Supersport tyres. There’s a low-temperature thermostat

fitted, along with Zunsport grills protecting the centre radiator and air conditioning condensers, and the ‘annoying’ rear wiper has been removed (with the hole in the rear screen plugged). This 997 wears her current 75,000 miles well.

LOVELY VARIED CARS AND ENTHUSIASTIC OWNERS – JUST WHAT OUR CLUB THRIVES ON!

Richard again; “She’s a veteran of many campaigns and I can’t see us parting with her any time soon. I reckon 997 was the last 911 to possess that unique ‘911-ness’. The newer 991 is a helluva car but I don’t find myself wanting to own one. I think there are plenty more adventures left in this car.”

Moving on to another modified car, Paul’s Seal Grey 2006 Carrera S is quite the hooligan tool: the intake resonator lives on a shelf in the garage and there’s a BMC filter in the airbox. The exhaust system is based upon a 200cel sportcatalyst setup running into EuroCup GT valvetronic ‘silencers’. The engine is supported (much to my surprise) by 964RS engine mounts. The flat six motor makes quite a noise at full chat … Paul’s 19" wheels first saw active service on a 991 Carrera. To get them sitting ‘just right’ they’re mounted using 7mm spacers and wear Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres. Lowered on H&R springs rather than Eibach, this PASM equipped car has a DSC Sport-controller fitted too. There’s also some GT3 brake ducts fitted, designed to direct cool air to the front calipers.

Inside, the original PCM unit has been removed (and, knowing Paul, probably thrown into a skip) and a more modern Pioneer head unit with Apple CarPlay has been fitted in its place. The original multi-function steering wheel is on the same shelf as the intake resonator, and a 991 Sport Design wheel with fresh Alcantara now modernises this 997s cockpit. Life with this 82,000 mile Carrera S hasn’t all been plain-sailing for Paul since buying it in September last year, with suspension niggles needing sor ting, a broken oil-filler pipe requiring replacement and various knocks and squeaks demanding attention. Overall though, Paul is quick to point out that for the money he’s spent he has managed to create a hardcharging road and track car that is fast enough, practical enough and very much ‘his own’. Lee’s Turbo is the long-lusted-after poster car, pampered and cherished. Richard’s Carrera S the long-termer, with many tales from the road to tell, whilst Paul’s Carrera S is the street and track screamer with modern connectivity for daily use. Lovely varied cars and enthusiastic owners – just what our club thrives on! 19

935 NUMBER OF THE BEAST AT 129

A range of 935 series Porsches were running at speed at this year’s Goodwood Members Meeting, giving Martin Broadribb an excellent opportunity to look back at their history. Author & Photographer Martin Broadribb

IT WAS a great pleasure to see a selection of cars from the final incarnation of the Group 5 racing category in action at the 76th Goodwood Members Meeting. Although they were only taking part in some high speed demonstrations, these ‘Special Production Cars’ (as they were known) included numerous examples of the legendary and charismatic 935, a car that above all of those that raced in the category between 1976 and 1982 is surely the one best remembered.

Previous spread: 1978 935/78 ‘Moby Dick’. Top left: 1977 935/K2. Top right & middle: 1980 935/K3. Right: 1979 935/K3. Far & bottom right: 1978 935/77.

AT 129

An interesting 1977 side project was the 935 ‘Baby’, a 1,425cc, single turbo, lightweight special with 380bhp which was designed to race only once! Porsche was annoyed that Ford and BMW had chosen to contest only the lower capacity class of the German Sports-Racing Championship rather than challenge it in the bigger division and so decided to take the fight to both makes. The initial outing was unsuccessful due to extreme cabin temperature but a second one at the German GP support race gave it victory by half a lap. Having made the point that it could beat the opposition, the car was then simply placed in their Museum!

Group 5 began in 1966 as a class for Special Touring Cars and these were replaced by Sports-Racing cars for 1970. This major regulation change gave us the Porsche 917 and Ferrari 512, but their reign was short-lived as the class was reconstituted with a 3.0L maximum engine capacity for 1972 and ran in this form until 1975. For the 1976 season the rules were totally revised and called for production-based vehicles once again, but extensive modifications were allowed and only certain body parts needed to be left unchanged.

While the bonnet, roof and doors had to remain as original – as did the body width – huge wheel arch extensions and aerodynamic devices were permitted, all of which conspired to retain the basic appearance of the standard models while caricaturing them to an extreme degree. BMW, Ferrari, Ford and Lancia were among the manufacturers who produced heavily modified versions of their production vehicles – often in conjunction with the top tuners of these marques – and as the cars contested the World Championship for Makes until 1980 and the World Endurance Championship from 1981 there was much publicity for their showroom models to be gained from success on the tracks. Porsche were not slow to realise that they had a natural contender in the 911 and so created a special version for Group 5 called the 935. The men at Weissach were arch-interpreters of racing regulations and noting that no minimum headlight height was specified they soon gave the car a far more aerodynamic nose, although they were also to discover an even more impressive loophole to exploit. The original 1976 935 was a development of the thinking behind the 911 Carrera RSR Turbo and was based on the 911 Turbo, although with some input from the 934 racer too. In fact, Porsche subsequently produced components to upgrade the latter, hence the 934/5 model. Using a 2,808cc single turbo unit capable of producing over 600bhp, the 935 quickly acquired some extensive body modifications and the two initial 935s just won the championship from BMW, performance being 0–60 in 3.3s and – perhaps more significantly – 0–150 in 11.0s! As was to become the norm with models like the 956, for the cars’ second 1977 season (and also in 1978 and 1979) the factory made the model available to private teams, setting in motion a sort of arms race. Initially this pitched the buyers against the factory squad, but the works ceased to race the model beyond 1978 and so it then became a war between the various privateers. As well as aerodynamic changes, 1977 saw smaller twin turbos replacing the previous unit in a quest for a more progressive throttle response and power could now be as much as 680bhp for shorter races.

Developments for 1978 included engines of 3.2L and even 3.5L, which saw up to 800bhp available and there were an increasing number of private teams taking advantage of a car that had the potential to be a successful ‘turnkey’ purchase. As ever though, the factory was looking at the rules, in particular a change that allowed the floor to be moved upwards. While aimed at front-engined models to allow their exhausts to be raised and thus the cars lowered it applied equally to the 935, so by legally but contentiously doing the same the Porsche engineers decreased the height of their car by almost four inches. Other – sometimes equally contested – aerodynamic developments were also incorporated, along with mechanical improvements that included water-cooled cylinder heads. All this added up to the works 935 swan-song, the car known affectionately as ‘Moby Dick’, after which the factory turned its racing programme attentions elsewhere. With so many 935s racing every team was looking for an advantage and the established Köln Porsche dealers and tuners the Kremer brothers had built their own K1 version in 1976. When Porsche began selling the 935 for the 1977 season they came up with their K2, followed by the hugely popular K3 and its K3/80 and K3/81 derivations. Their fastidious and thoughtful approach to refining and preparing their take on the 935 was not only reflected in many successes but in their capturing the biggest prize of all, overall victory at Le Mans in 1979. In 1981 their K4 variant was an expensive spaceframe response to the improving competition and while 1983 saw Group 5 replaced in a reorganised World Championship, these and other 935s continued to race in other categories, particularly the US IMSA series. It was in the USA that some interesting 935s were developed and even – like the Kremer K4 – built from scratch. In Europe Joest had come up with their JR1, a ‘Moby Dick’ replica, and some of those developing their own versions of the 935 stateside such as JLP and Brumos also constructed Moby lookalikes. In fact, the Fabcar-built 935 JLP4 – using ground-effect technology – is said to be the fastest 935 ever built, although whether these non-Porsche made cars that only used the 935 mechanical parts can really be called 935s is perhaps debateable. The Fabcar-manufactured 935-84 was a further example of such original work, as was the GAACO 935L1 with its Lola-influenced nose. The 935 was still to be found on the circuits in races like the British GT Championship well into the 1990s, 20 years after its introduction. Some competition cars last a season or less before being superseded, but the 935 continued to prove just how excellent it had been right from the start.

It was good to see these flamebreathing beasts in action again at Goodwood and to be reminded of those great days. 23

CURBOROUGH SPRINT DAY TIPEC’s East Midlands Region enjoyed a slightly wet day testing their Porsches and themselves close to the limits of grip on Curborough’s short speed circuit. Author Jim Stevens / Photographer Richard Harwood

PARTICIPANTS FOUND THEMSELVES GETTING INCREASINGLY SILLY IN THE SLIPPERY CONDITIONS …

Shash Mistry proving that you don’t need traction control or PSM to have a great time. AT 129

A relatively rare shot of James pointing in the right direction.

April 24th witnessed a bright(ish) and early start for the East Midlands

region as we gathered at the damp, tight and twisty Curborough sprint circuit for our inaugural club sprint day, organised Chequered Flag Events.

ARO George had organised the event, and 15 of us were booked in for the day, along with a handful of non-Porsches. We were split into groups of four or five and each group was given 30 minutes of track time, with one car on track at a time for a quick three lap blast around the ‘figure of eight’ configuration. For those of you who don’t know Curborough, it’s a venue near Lichfield most commonly used for speed events such as sprints. The tightness of the circuit prevents more than one car being on the circuit at any time but, with the exception of a couple of corners, there’s really not much to hit (although RO Jim did manage to crash at one of the non-safe corners on a previous visit, resulting in a reasonably hefty repair bill to his Elise). There were just a few drops of rain during the morning sessions, which enabled all of us to get comfortable with the circuit layout and to start to push a little harder. We had a great variety of cars on the day. Shash Mistry showed that you can have a whole lot of fun in a 964 Targa, Alan Shaw broke all of our hearts with his gorgeous 993 Turbo and Matt Wallis left us all slightly harder of hearing with his fearsome 997. Jenny Howl left her Cayman at home in favour of the Quattro handling of her Audi TT, but nobody could blame her as the rain really set in after lunch.

I wish I could pretend that I caught this one!

The plan was for the organisers to set up a live-timing leaderboard for the afternoon session but, sadly, the increasingly wet conditions meant that this was not a sensible approach. Instead, the participants found themselves getting increasingly silly in the slippery conditions as slides became more lurid, and spins more common. I’m not sure who eventually took the ‘Spinderella’ award, but James Mackenzie-Scott was certainly in contention with his only-just-legal rear Pirellis proving reluctant to provide much in the way of rear grip and Jim’s not quite as bad rear Michelins also proving no match for his heavy right foot! Richard Harwood deserves a mention, both for the sweet sound of his Remus exhaust and for the neatness of his driving. George also demonstrated the mid-engined balance of his Boxster throughout the afternoon. At the time of writing, we were still waiting for the laptimes to be published so I can’t reveal who was the official rain-master of the afternoon. What I can say is that we all had a fantastic time and will definitely be trying something similar again before the year is out. Many thanks to George Acquah for organising the day, and to Richard Harwood for taking most of the photos. Events like this demonstrate what a brilliant club TIPEC is – a great variety of cars, drivers from all backgrounds and a fantastic camaraderie during the day. What more could you want, other than sunshine?

The warmer weather was welcomed at our first event in April with a visit to our favourite car wash and detailing factory. A great morning and afternoon was had by all who attended the Angelwax Pro-wash and Detailing Demo Day. A great drive from the East coast to the West to then receive a hand wash for all cars with luxurious Angelwax produc ts, detailing demonstrations on headlight restoration and clay bar and polishing, with one lucky member getting their car fully sorted for the following week’s Classic Car Show. We the club then heading in two directions over the same weekend there was plenty to suit all members. The Perthshire Classic Car Festival at Scone Palace saw 15 Porsches parked and enjoying the start of the great weather, fantastic company and plenty of vintage and classic cars to keep everyone amused. For the more adventurous, the North Coast 500 was the order for the weekend with no less than seven Porsches enjoying some of the best roads Scotland has to offer. Friday and Saturday night AT 129

For me March started off with being sent to Coventry for my first AGM. It was great meeting ROs and AROs from around the country and finding out what is going on in other regions. Thankfully the snow didn’t put everyone off but there weren’t quite as many Porsches there as there might have been otherwise. Coventry Transport Museum was an excellent venue with parking for the club out front and some great exhibits inside. I can definitely recommend a visit, especially to see the Thrust cars. We had another successful club meeting in March, with 15 people in attendance and 10 Porsches. This meeting was of note because the numbers weren’t bolstered by members and ROs from other regions. Hopefully this will continue and we will build on these numbers throughout the year. As usual we had a good chat and discussed planned and possible upcoming events, in particular the Second Northern-ish Gathering which was only a few weeks away. April 15th arrived and I made it to the Wellington at 8:30am to be guided into the car park by North West ROs Richard and Colin (plus family members), who I must send a big thank you to for organising this great event. There were already a number of cars parked up but I did not expect that there would really be 90 Porsches together before we set off to our next destination at 11am. Breakfast at The Wellington was a buffet affair

Parked up at the Northern-ish gathering

which was ideal considering the sporadic arrival of TIPEC members from across the north(ish) and I for one was happy to fill up on bacon, eggs, sausage and a bottomless cup of tea. After a good chat and kick of tyres we headed off for Knaresborough where we would all meet up again at Nidd Valley Business Park, hidden away off a country road (I would never have noticed it if my satnav wasn’t telling me to turn left). There we spent a good couple of hours looking around RPM, Gmund Cars and Reep Detailing, chatting some more and meeting new friends. Oh and before I forget, there were some fantastic cars out for the day. Thanks again to the organisers, Colin and Richard, and to everyone who came and made it a great day out. We finished off April with our first curry night of the year. We had 13 people round the table at the Aagrah Restaurant near Tadcaster, including several new faces to the club, and 10 Porsches parked outside. As always we had good chat and a laugh over the food and a bit of look at the cars before heading home. I’m sure we will be having another one before the end of the year so let me know if you’d like to come along. Finally I’d like to apologise to anyone who went to the Red Lion on April 16th expecting a club meeting only to find that the pub was a building site and that the meeting had been cancelled. We have had a busy few weeks for Cumbria Region! Starting with our March Club night where Alan Aspden entertained us with his fantastic photos and stories of European road trips – with a healthy dose of Porsche history! Next we had the much lauded Northern-ish gathering. It was an early start for many, not least Dean who covered 305 miles round trip from Whitehaven. It was a fantastic day and all credit to Colin and Richard for the organisation. Quite a few members from the region then attended the Classic Car Meet at Wray. Aprils club night was another great evening in the Gilpin Bridge. New faces, new Porsches, and a brilliantly educating talk from our guest Michael Booth from www.thepolishingbooth.co.uk who opened eyes and minds and enhanced all our abilities to clean and protect our Porsches. There is another Classic meet at Wray on the 17th and we will be there! May also sees the seventh International Cumbria Motor Show on Sunday 20th. We have 15 cars registered for display and will be flying the flag! Club night is at The Gilpin Bridge, LA8 8EP on the last Thursday of the month. We look forward to seeing you all at the events!

Club nights and Facebook page are how we keep in touch. The Facebook North East page is a closed group used for Porsche and club chat. An evening visit for cars and coffee at Swainby Classics saw a small gathering turn into a large event. Most of the vehicles on display, and for sale, were of the American persuasion. A nice friendly atmosphere with the added delight of fresh donuts. The official and traditional first event of the year is Malton Big Breakfast. Due to a problem with parking (the field was wet) the event has been postponed until later in the year. The fun of Malton is getting there over the moors road and the quality of cars on display is the treat at the end of the drive. It’s worth waiting for. Our next outing was to the new Teesside Porsche Centre to see the launch of the new Cayenne.

The new Cayenne looked impressive and so did the Porsche workshops. Accompanied by some rousing live sax music it made for a very pleasant and civil evening. Both myself and Mike caught up with our opposite numbers at PCGB. Watch this space for joint events in the future. Truly the highlight of the year so far was the ‘Northern-ish’ meeting. Congratulations to the guys for setting this one up, what a success. A collection of 10 cars set out from The Anson to join over 90 cars for breakfast and continue to Gmund to view some truly well-prepared Porsches and VDubs. The success of this event can surely be put down to the chat and promotion on Facebook between the Northern regions. A local detailer opened his doors to the club also for a look at his customer cars including Ferrari and McLaren. This prompted our RO Mike Williams to suggest a visit to Alexanders, a local supercar dealer, that wasn’t too far out of our way on the trip home.

Meetings are held on the second Monday of the month from 7pm (with club business dealt with at 8pm) at The Bowling Green, Preston Road, Charnock Richard PR7 5LA. It was gratifying to receive an email recently from the club’s chairman informing me that our region currently has 100 full members. I’d like to thank you all for your support and confidence: Colin, Darren and I will continue to do our best to provide the ‘club experience’ that seems to be working for the North West. On 9th March we gathered 12 Porsches at Lymm Services to convoy down to Oulton Park for the annual RS Day. We met with friends from the Cheshire and Staffs region and enjoyed hospitality provided by Darren King and Darren Horrocks of Unique Porsche Specialists who were onsite with the ‘Unique Support Vehicle’. Our first show of the year was at Southport’s Supercars of the Northwest event on 25th March. Darren Pollard kindly took charge of organising things and we were pitched up in good time with the event shelter and gas stove dusted off. As it turned out, Darren was right to get us there early: the beautiful spring weather brought visitors to the show by their thousands and it turned into an incredibly busy day. Special thanks to new member Chris Heys for bringing along his gorgeous Carrera T and Steve Bailey for trekking down from Carnforth.

Our final trip out was to a local breakfast meet at Trinity Car Solutions. Trinity are an ’80s hot hatch specialist on Teesside Airport industrial estate. They are no stranger to Stuttgart’s finest and regularly have a few Porsches to discuss. A great little meet and all done before lunch. Ideal for a Sunday. As this report is written I can only look forward to the Donington meeting. See you all there and at the club nights, first Tuesday of every month at The Anson Farm. As always any suggestions and ideas for the club can get in touch with myself or Mike by phone or Facebook page, or come and talk to us at the club night. April’s Sunday Breakfast Meet took place just a week later on the 22nd and saw 24 people, 16 Porsches and one Octavia vRS gathered at The Garden Kitchen in the Ribble Valley for breakfast with banter and vegetarian black pudding … It was great to welcome Michelle Bonnar-Jackson to her first club event. After breakfast we took a gentle drive through the Trough of Bowland to the Jubilee Tower at Quernmore to admire the views, get cold and wave at the plethora of older classic cars passing by on their St George’s Day Rally. We have loads more bits and pieces in the pipeline for the summer to help you get the most out of Porsche ownership and have just moved into the ‘merchandising’ game as well with ‘Porsche Enthusiasts Club North West’ mugs now available. Let me know if you’re a paid-up member and not receiving an occasional email and remember that we can be found on Facebook at Porsche Enthusiasts Club – North West. Colin keeps our page on the main club website fully updated too, so that’s well worth a look. AT 129

The winter weather of March may have hampered some of the events organised but that didn’t stop a hardy group supporting the Galloways 150th birthday celebrations or the Breakfast at the Brewery. Thankfully April cleared up just enough for the convoy that headed to Lytham Spitfire Centre to see the superb display of aircraft and to chat with the volunteers (in period attire) about the aircrafts role, swiftly followed by proper fish & chips on the seafront! Two convoys headed across to the Northern-ish gathering. Three Boxsters and a full compliment of transaxles headed through the foggy Peak District. The roofs came down when the early morning fog blew away and a picturesque drive was had. It was a sight to see with so many fellow region members all out for breakfast. En route to Gmund the Rothmans exhaust clamp failed … after some DIY with a few bungee cords we were back on the road. However our scenic drive for some tea saw the Rothmans overheat

before some more roadside mechanics got her underway again! The failure of a light switch at the last halt almost lead to a Top Gear moment but food beckoned! Needless to say C&S live up to adventure and don’t let such issues phase them! We joined our fellow members from Central region at Trentham Garden Centre for a breakfast meet. It was great to see familiar faces and new ones as well. After that Gareth and Stef took us in a most excellent route across the Peaks with stunning scenery and even some sunshine. After a stop at Yonderman Cafe we headed off again finishing up for a final bite to eat at The Talbot pub near Biddulph. It was probably the best £50 I’ve spent on fuel recently! Many miles under the belt and only 18 miles of fuel left in the tank at the end, but a phone full of pics and dashcam full of video … all can be seen on the region’s Facebook page! A trackday is being planned along with more Sunday coffee mornings and Friday chippy teas to be included when available. Monthly meetings are held second Wednesday of every month from 7pm at our new venue The Golden Pheasant, 1 Main Street, Etton, Peterborough PE6 7DA. A few of us joined the Strasse race team as they competed in the Porsche Club championship at Donington Park. A great day was had by all meeting and chatting to the drivers and mechanics, then watching the great Porsche racing around this challenging circuit. Thanks to Sunny for setting this up and for all at Strasse for making us all feel so welcome.

The second Northern-ish gathering started for our region with us meeting at our usual rendezvous point near Peterborough at 7am. We were joined by Nick and the South Central massive. We started our drive up north with the regions radios being used to full effect with the banter flying from the off. Donald and Sunny joined us a little further up en route to add to the convoy. We rendezvoused with the East Midlands at Blyth services where we were treated to the exhaust note from Matt’s 997; ear splitting comes to mind! South Yorks & North Notts region joined further up the A1 with precision timing for us all to convoy together. It was a very exciting drive seeing all the Porsches coming out of what seemed like every turning. There were even a few random Porsches that joined the convoy for a bit even though they just happened to be travelling at a similar time. We arrived at the Wellington to a well organised, smooth running operation; thanks to all at the North West region! Great to see so many TIPEC

regions all lining up together with a good mix of new and older cars. The venue was very welcoming and the breakfast was well priced and very good, we all enjoyed it and some of us enjoyed a couple of plates. This month has seen our ARO Michael say goodbye to his much loved 944. It’s been a labour of love over the last three years with it coming from a shed having hardly covered 500 miles in 12 years to it being restored by Kev Waterhouse at DW Performance and shown at Silverstone Classic and Donington Historic amongst others. It has gone to a lovely couple who have joined the North West region so we’re sure they’ll continue to love it and enjoy it as much as Michael did. Things have started to warm up in the East Midlands, well the activities certainly have even if the temperatures are staying stubbornly low. Both the March and April events were hampered by rain and freezing cold and as I write this it’s not looking much better for May’s scheduled gettogether. This didn’t prevent Ian Glennon from bringing his freshly acquired, and very tidy, 996 along to April’s meeting. I may be slightly biased, but I’m always happy to welcome examples of Porsche’s finest, most stylish model (driven by Porsche’s finest, most stylish drivers too!) As well as the monthly meets we also had a great early-morning drive to the local Nottingham Car Café Meet at Stratstone’s in Annesley. Fourteen members cars made the journey to what is a great car meet with loads of exotica to gawp at. ARO Jack, freshly returned from his honeymoon, led the early-morning convoy to what was a thoroughly enjoyable event. On Sunday 15th April a number of East Mids members joined the Northern-ish Regional Gathering, which is covered elsewhere in this issue. I’m sure that we would all like to extend our thanks to Richard, Colin and all in the North West region for organising such a cracking event with 90-odd cars turning up and a great day out for all. You will also be able to read elsewhere about our inaugural East Mids Sprint Day at Curborough AT 129

on April 24th where, once again, we didn’t let the inclemency of the climate dampen our enjoyment. ARO George did a great job of organising the event and we’ll definitely be back for more at a future date. Looking ahead (as I write this), Alan Shaw is planning to bring his 1969 rally 911 along to the May meet which will be literally fresh off the boat having returned from Alan’s Trans-Asia Rally. Alan will be on-hand to show us round the car and talk us through his experiences on rallies all over the world. It’s bound to be an enormously interesting evening. We’re also looking to organise a track evening at Donington in June, so keep an eye on Facebook and club emails for further information. As I’ve said before, we’re always looking out for new ideas and suggestions for club activities so do please let me, George or Jack know if there is anything that you would like us to arrange. At our last monthly meeting at the Woolie, we were pleased to see some new faces. Tim and Debi came down from the Norwich area, who have already joined TIPEC, and Greg and Kirsty from Great Bentley, who are hopefully joining the fold soon. One of our local ad-hoc days was held on Sunday 22nd April, National Drive It Day. We were blessed with the most glorious weather. After gathering the crew centrally, we set off with some very spirited driving by our point car, driven by Anthony ‘Sam the T-bag’ Sampson in his Guards Red pocket rocket 944, followed on by a drove of pigs. Our target venue was Kersey Mill, Suffolk, where there was not only a good selection of cars on show, but also the bonus of free entry to the mill and other attractions. A great day was had by all. Everyone was in fine fettle and a good amount of interest was raised in reference to both the club and the cars. A fantastic event with all looking forward to the forthcoming months of motoring Porsche madness. Sadly, during our previous meeting Steve and Lorna advised they would be standing down from their steering committee roles. We thank them for their assistance over the past couple of years as they have been a great help and inspiration in getting the steering committee up and running (cars included). Our newest member of the committee team is Adam, assisted by his better half Sarah. The committee would also like to send out a special thanks to Ian & Therese for letting us descend on them and hosting our Annual BBQ / fish ’n’ chips shindig thingy on August 4th. Below is a list of confirmed events that we are attending but keep your eyes peeled for those little changes and ad-hoc events that we drop in sometimes to keep you lot on your toes. We will be asking questions later on to see who has been paying attention!

We will also be taking our annual run down to The Ace Café for their Porsche night on Monday 28th May. Central region are also going to Laon in May, again this is turning out to be an annual event for us. Unfortunately I cant go, but maybe next year! June brings us Simply Porsche at Beaulieu, lets hope the weather is kind to us, Porsche heaven with over 800 cars last year. We are back at Trentham Gardens on Father’s day for a Gemini Show, again we are joining up with our friends from C & SS, it will be great to see them again. July sees us back across the channel, this time for Classic Le Mans. It’s six years since I was last there and I cant wait to go again. This same weekend is also CITP Lichfield, a show I also enjoy, but there’s always next year. The end of July gives us Silverstone Classic, this is a massive race weekend, with a big Porsche turnout, if you haven’t been its well worth a trip. We did make up for it on our April coffee morning when we met up with Cheshire and South Staffs for a bit of banter at Trentham Gardens, C & SS went off for a run out and a pub lunch afterwards and I believe a spirited drive ensued. We had a lovely curry evening at The Lodge, the company was great as was the food, thanks to all those that came along, it was good to see everyone. Central headed north to Leeds for the second Northern-ish meeting. What a weekend, with 90 Porsches. Many thanks go to all the organisers, we had a cracking time and some of the cars that turned up were fantastic. There was also a run to Gmund Cars, their stock included some rather nice race cars and a couple of Porsche tractors, both of which were sold. My favourite was a black Mk1 996 GT3. Ahead of us is the Donington Historic Festival. From the Facebook chat this looks like it will be a big TIPEC event, and if last year is anything to go by the racing will be very exciting. I loved the Touring Cars, and the ’60s race cars were so competitive, Minis competing against Ford Galaxies. This really was wheel to wheel racing at its best, the nimbleness of the Minis in the corners against the pure grunt of the big Fords on the straights made it very interesting.

Also don’t forget our club night on the second Monday of every month at The Bulls Head, Shenstone. Nothing formal, and now the light nights are here it would be great to see you and your car. Firstly, as our membership grows, I have asked Gary Howard to join as ARO to help run the region. Gary’s knowledge of events and love of the Porsches will be a great help as we continue to grow the region. We joined with Peterborough and East Midlands Regions as the spring Coffee and Cars event at DW Performance in March. Kev and the team did an excellent job with demos and it was great to see so many Porsches turn up from far and wide. Well done team DW! Our March meeting was held at the Betsey Wynne in Swanborne and we welcomed some new joiners. A great evening was had by all. April kicked off with Colmworth cars where we were treated to the noise and smells of a rare vintage Bugatti along with the usual eclectic mix of cars. It’s a great little meet on the first Sunday of each month. Friends from Peterborough joined us too. Some of us made the annual pilgrimage north to the Northern Gathering in Harrogate and our thanks go out to Colin and Richard from NW for such a super event. We joined with other regions AT 129

Porsche. Peter & I will be spending the weekend in the New Forest for the club picnic on the Saturday and the main event on Sunday at Beaulieu. On a positive note, there is new management at the Goat and our first meeting with them is on 6th May where I hope to speak with Laura, the new publican; we will explore the possibility of a TIPEC only club night which might tempt some of you to venture out with ‘other halves’? We’ll update by email in the coming weeks, but the positive soundings regarding accommodating the car fraternity will hopefully be a big improvement! The ACE Café gathering in March was surprisingly busy for a cold but dry evening. The end of April meeting was preceded by a Met Office weather warning of heavy rain and freezing temperatures, so Peter and I agreed to put out a Facebook notice that we wouldn’t attend, only to then see a dry sunny evening transpire when it was too late to react! We’ll be back on the 28th May (sadly I’ll be in the North having a classic car serviced near Durham, this one isn’t a Porsche! ) In April I attended the local Pistonheads breakfast meeting at White Elm garden centre in Bicknacre, Essex; there were around 40 cars, with some real exotic machines. The company was friendly and the breakfast hearty, so a good morning out! Peter and I are considering a drive out day, some country roads and a stop for lunch; we’d be interested to get some feedback if this would appeal to members and their families? Simply Porsche, the club’s main annual event, is on Sunday June 3rd at Beaulieu National Motor Museum as usual. It’s a great part of the country to spend the weekend. Peter & I have booked our B+B rooms for the Saturday and Sunday, giving us scope for relaxed road trips on the Saturday and Monday. If a weekend interests, book soon. If anyone would like to join a group run on the Saturday or Monday, contact myself or Peter!

When the clocks sprung forward and we wanted our Porsches to look their best in readiness for the summer season, Sean hosted a detailing day. The weather was fabulous and he laid on a seemingly endless supply of hot and cold drinks and bacon rolls. Members Kevin and Graeme kindly volunteered their 996 Turbo to be the feature car, gaining the benefit of having their car detailed. Their 996 has been living outside over the winter and grime had built up in and around the rain channels and weather seals. Paul used a number of products and methods to gently ease the dirt from the Porsche. Kevin and Graeme joined in and over a period of time and several coffees, the Turbo was looking stunning again.

cause more harm than they do good. For very little cost, two buckets with grit guards and some ph neutral detergents are a good place to start. Following a leisurely breakfast in late April we enjoyed an hour long convoy drive, which took us to the McLaren dealership in Ascot. Our hosts gave us an overview of the model range and treated us to sticky cakes and drinks. An incredible surprise to us all was the appearance, while we were there, of a prototype of the McLaren Senna. Max, aged 11, will never forget the moment he was allowed to sit in the drivers seat of one of the rarest cars in the world. A huge ‘thank you’ to everyone who made that visit happen. This years events have seen regional members on Porsche holidays in Europe, a boat trip up the River Thames hosted by members George and Gill, and a south coast drive out for breakfast. For anyone who was otherwise committed at those times, there are photos and updates on the Kent and South East London regional page of the TIPEC website. Upcoming events can also be found on the regional page of the website. Planned are car shows, more drive outs and breakfast meets, and not forgetting a live Jazz picnic. Tonbridge Official Porsche Centre are also setting aside a Saturday morning for us and opening their workshop facilities for our region.

During this time Sean demonstrated to Paul Howman how to safely remove ingrained grime from a sunroof seal, this also developed into a joint detailing job. The time flew by.

Club nights are held on the first Monday of each month, at The Carpenters Arms, Hadlow (full details on the TIPEC website). They are a great opportunity to meet like minded Porsche Enthusiasts. As well as being able to admire each other’s Porsches, this is also where you can learn from the first hand experiences of other members.

Many thanks to Jamie and his colleague for the warm welcome, the array of Porsches was quite remarkable, including a Carrera GT which my wife tried for size … but my wallet could not quite manage the £695k asking price. Having a four seater Porsche comes in handy at times as I was joined by Terry, Andy and George for the run up to the NEC for the Restoration Show. This is a smaller show than the one in November with the emphasis on working on the cars rather than just showing them. The many retail stands, both main stream and auto

Simply Porsche, Beaulieu June 13th (Wednesday) Club Night at the Bolney Stage

Members also attended the first ever open day at Valoroso, a new race and restoration business opened by regional member David Green and his son Mat. It was fascinating to see the level of detail in a BMC Australia Factory Team racing Austin and, at the other end of the scale, a ‘barn find’ 968 cabriolet. After the meeting we adjourned to a very convenient pub just across the road.

July 1st–8th (Friday–Sunday) Le Mans Classic

Our third open morning (we do do other events), was at Precision Porsche. This is always well attended with the opportunity for pre-booked health checks for your car. Again many thanks to Peter Rowe and all the staff for an excellent event. The vast range of Porsches included a Singer, a very rare creation that even has leather cladding in the engine bay!

July 20th–22nd (Friday–Sunday) Silverstone Classic

22nd April was National Drive it Day and we made the run up to Bicester for their Sunday Scramble, a great show with an estimated 5,000 cars in attendance.

All details of our regional events can be found online under the regional section of the main TIPEC.net website.

Late April saw the sun finally come out and seven Southern Region cars made an early start north to Wilton House. Lightning and heavy rain the night before hadn’t deterred us and the roads were surprisingly dry. Whilst there, Steve and I got chatting to someone over a 911 Carrera who turned out to be ex-F1 and Le Mans racer Mike Wilds. That alone made the trip worthwhile, never mind all the amazing cars on display, the delicious breakfast and the drive home in the sunshine. Nick has kindly offered to arrange a visit to Canford Classics to see what’s involved in their classic Porsche restoration process (note that this is in addition to their Porsche Pull-In listed below). Date and details to follow. If anyone has any words and/or pictures of what what they've been up to with their cars, please do email them to me for publication. HAMPSHIRE

hampshire@tipec.net RO William Batchelor • 07941 034 422 RO Richard Warburton • 07976 276 931 Meetings are held first Wednesday of every month from 7pm at The Links Tavern, Portsmouth Road, Liphook, Hampshire GU30 7EF. It’s been all change over the last few months. First we changed the meeting venue, which has proven to be a good move, and this last month we have seen a change in Regional organiser too.

RO Jim’s 944 S2 at Wilton House with Steve W’s 993 Cabriolet in the background

We say a fond farewell to Regional Organiser John Rampton, who has chosen to step down owing to family and work commitments. John will still be attending as a member, so no getting rid of him that easy. We would like to say a huge thank you for his input over the last 18 months or so, and we all wish him well for the future. William Batchelor, a local member from Clanfield, has stepped in and taken over the role. We would like to give him a warm welcome to the team. No doubt you will be hearing from him at the next club night or event. William has only recently taken up Porsche ownership with a 996 Cabriolet in Lapis Blue Metallic, a stunning looking car if I say so myself. William’s still learning about the car and the club, but I’m sure we will be able to give him a hand if he needs it.

William’s first organised event will most likely be a curry run out, so I’m sure many of you will be joining us for that one. This next few months is going to be pretty packed in the Porsche calendar, so hope to catch up with some of you at the events. Some of us attended this month’s Fairmile event in Cobham (third Wednesday of every month). This months display was a truly impressive line up of old classics and modern GT3s. All topped off with an outstanding display of evening sunshine and a cool beer. A highly recommended midmonth venue and a good excuse to get the car out and about. With parking on the main lawn in front of the pub, the atmosphere can be electric. June 2nd (Saturday) 25th Anniversary TIPEC Picnic (Club Members only) As this year is our 25th Anniversary, the club is celebrating by holding picnic for members at a pre-booked private area in the New Forest. We have room for 100 cars, we will provide ice cool drinks and there will be plenty of cake to celebrate with, also a live Jazz music to give that garden party atmosphere. Please contact the club office for bookings and more info. June 3rd (Sunday) Simply Porsche at Beaulieu, our main show and a great day out for the family. June 17th (Sunday) Porsche Owners Day at Classic Motor Hub, Bibiry www.classicmotorhub.com/shop/porscheowners-june-17-2018/

During March and April the TIPEC Bristol group have had several good get togethers. There were two well attended monthly meetings at The Plough which included a demo of a decarbonising service, a quickfire quiz, and a raffle, both with prizes of Easter eggs donated by the guys from Porsche Bristol.

July 8th (Sunday) Dursley Rotary Club Rally Contact Sue or Graham on gwpeake@me.com

The meetings are also the time to hear about and sign up for joining in group events and we have enjoyed a great drive into Wales thanks to Sarah and Brian. The weather wasn’t kind to us that day and so a return will be needed to make the most of the views – see Sarah’s separate article in this magazine. At the end of the same week we were much luckier for our drive to the Morgan Car Factory in Malvern – again beautiful scenery, the difference being we could enjoy it! We may be Porsche Enthusiasts but we couldn’t have failed to be impressed by the manufacturing standards of these handbuilt wonders. Thanks to everyone that’s got involved and with the weather hopefully on the up we can now look forward to some summer events.
