All Torque 130 Aug/Sep 2018 Where does the time go? I can not believe I was in Italy two months ago, Simply Porsche is done and dusted, and I am looking forward to my favourite festival, the Silverstone Classic weekend. Locally we have been to a couple of shows and set a new Kent regional record of 27 cars on display at the Bromley Pageant. From a 991 GT3 to a pair of 356 Coupés and pretty much every generation of front, rear and mid-engined inbetween. We had the opportunity to chat with the stars from Goblin Works Garage, the latest car restoration/modification show on Quest. Jimmy de Ville told us he was on the look out for a Cayman and did have a cheesy grin on his face when we asked him what he would do to it. Porsche 70th Anniversary celebrations are in full swing and its good to hear that our relationship with the dealer network seems to be at an all-time high, with many members being invited along to the Porsche Centre celebrations that took place in June. Some had organised some high end events, with racing legends like Derek Bell in attendance. I am looking forward to hosting a group from Kent and those on the Scenic Trip, for a tour of the Factory and the museum anniversary exhibition in September. It was great to see that Porsche entered four cars for the GT class at Le Mans. It was a little sad that after winning the race last year, they cancelled their LMP program to focus on other projects. It was a fitting nod to their record number of 24 hour victories, that the retro liveried cars finished first and second in class. The club is in great shape and our membership is at an all time high. I touched on this in the last issue – to get the full benefit of membership you need to get involved. You will not know anyone until you make the effort and I always say that after attending three club nights,

you will feel part of the gang. No one is going to critique your car and you do not have to sit a quiz to test your Porsche knowledge. We are a very broad church and the amount of collective experience makes attending club nights and events a good place to ask questions. Whether you want to compare the characteristics of a particular model, the best place to go or how to do something. As well as reaching out and making new friends, reducing the cost of ownership and making ownership affordable is one of our main aims. I am pleased to announce that Steve Tatham has volunteered for the role as TIPEC’s Valuations Officer. Porsche values seem to be a topic of great interest at the moment, especially with those that bought at the top of the market. It is fair to say that the market has slightly softened unless you have a low mileage original example. The investor collectors were the ones responsible for the bubble, they have cashed in and are now targeting quality over quantity. A lot is made of high mileage cars being better because they are used and well maintained etc. Whether that is true or not, the market has never agreed with this sentiment. Beware when you see people advertising 100,000 mile cars as investment opportunities. Unless they are giving them away or they are ultra rare, then they are not an investment in the current marketplace. I will close by wishing Tony and Sarah Blow all the very best for the future, they tied the knot. Good luck. Enjoy the summer, lets hope it is a really long one. Cheers, Sean.

News & updates Goodwood Revival 2018 September 7–9th (Friday–Sunday) Every September the Revival recreates the golden era of Goodwood Motor Circuit, between 1948 and 1966. This extraordinary event, a theatrical and sporting drama, assembles the most significant racing cars and motorcycles along with legendary drivers and riders from the past and stars of today. One of the biggest and most fun retro motoring events of the year, the Goodwood Revival goes beyond your usual classic car show, becoming a festival of everything vintage, from fashion to food as well as, of course, the motor racing at its heart. No modern vehicles are allowed within the circuit, and no modern dress is permitted – making the Revival a truly immersive experience. 2018 marks the 20th anniversary of the Revival, and as such it will be extra-special. There will be a huge parade of past Revival race winning cars with 50+ classics already confirmed. The 70th anniversary of Silverstone will also be celebrated, by dressing Goodwood’s themed pits to suit.

70 years of Porsche Celebrated at the Festival of Speed Also at Goodwood, this year’s featured marque at July’s Festival of Speed was Porsche, as an official celebration of the 70th anniversary. As well as iconic Porsche cars making up the enormous central sculpture, a collection of very special Porsches made their way up the famous hill climb course, many of them driven by well-known racers and Porsche personalities (including Walter Röhrl, Magnus Walker, Derek Bell and Neel Jani). Porsche sent over an incredible range of cars from through its 70 years. From the recently restored 356 ‘Number One’ roadster – the very first Production Porsche – through icons like the 1973 911 Carrera RS – the original, very first, ‘RS’ – right up to the record-breaking 919 Hybrid Evo, which recently shattered the lap record at the Nurburgring Nordschliefe. DRIVING SUFFOLK WITH SURREY & SUSSEX REGION

Author Bob Stephens Photography Bob Stephens

This year’s Weekend of the Year for

TIPEC’s Surrey & Sussex Region took place over the 11–14th May and was centered on Woodbrdge in Suffolk. All the hard work that went into this year’s event was undertaken by Terry Rockall, our ARO, but unfortunately come the day Terry & Jacky were nowhere to be seen due to an unfortunate stomach bug keeping Terry housebound.

Friday morning we started bright and early at Pease Pottage Services, except Michael & Charlotte who caught up on the way, and made our way up to Ipswich for lunch at Duke Orwell Quay, where we were joined by Ian & Eirian. This modern marina development of the old docks gives a good choice of food and drink, as well as the opportunity for a stroll along the dockside in what is now part of the university campus. After lunch we made our way to our hotel for the weekend, Ufford Park Hotel & Spa. It would not be a WotY without a breakdown. This year it was Liz & Julie’s turn when the newly rebuilt engine in the 928 started misfiring and had to be replaced by a VW Passat Estate! Colin & Derek, being the gentlemen they are, offered to chauffer the ladies around.

The picturesque town of Southwold was our destination on Saturday with a visit to Admans, where we split into two groups, one for a tour of the historic brewery and one for a tour of the more modern distillery. Chris and I were on the distillery tour and it was surprising how many different spirits they produce, from Gin to Vodka to Whiskey and various other speciality drinks. The tasting was, of course, not to be missed and as Chris was driving I was forced to help finish hers. We adjourned to The Harbour Inn for lunch where we met up with a couple of members from the Anglia region, who we are also likely to meet at Le Mans Classic (next week, as I write this). Chris & I also took a stroll down the River Blyth and across to the picturesque village of Walberswick.

On Sunday we visited the Anglo-Saxon site of Sutton Hoo. This archeological site includes Sixth and Seventh Century burials including a previously undisturbed ship burial, the treasures from which are now in the British Museum. The National Trust staff were happy to give us a group rate for entry, which is always a bonus. Lunch was at the Jolly Sailor in Orford, after which most people had a stroll around the village with its views across Orford Ness, a secret installation where Radar was developed out of a search for a ‘death ray’ weapon in the 1930s and where hydrogen bombs were tested in the 1950s. We enjoyed a farewell breakfast on Monday morning and each went our own way, with just the idea of what to do next year. As always, watch this space.

There were at least 477 cars of all eras from 1923 to 1981 participating in the racing, where Porsche was dominant with 67 cars. There were 37 races over the three days as well as daily themed parades, plus the 100 rookie kids (six–10 yrs) in the ‘Little Big Mans’ roaring around the circuit in their special scaled-down versions of classic cars (including numerous Porsches). The kids even made a traditional Le Mans start which was started by the one and only Usain Bolt.

In addition there were thousands of spectator cars to drool over of all shapes and sizes, including some makes and models we’ve never heard of, but as expected Porsches dominated. Le Mans is unique, with miles of walking each day in heat of 33+ degrees around the track, grandstands, pits, six paddocks, car displays, trade villages and Le Mans Museum – a must visit for all petrolheads.

REBELS RACE (EVEN) HARDER Author Martin Broadribb Left page GT4 Clubsport, Goodwood (2016), photographed by Martin Broadribb Right page GT4 Clubsport MR, workshop (2018), photographed by Ted Walker AT 130

The Cayman GT4 Clubsport is a model which is just a little confusing. There are two, you see.

One is an out and out racing or trackday machine, the other a normal – if normal is the correct word – roadgoing GT4 with a number of Clubsport additions. Ted Walker is the delighted owner of one of the latter (which we featured in All Torque 125), but on a recent trip to a racing car preparer to carry out an FIA HTP inspection he was surprised to see a genuine track version of the Clubsport in their workshop. This is certainly a rare car in Britain and I can only recall seeing one other here since the car was released at the Los Angeles Motor Show in late 2015. Apparently bought by the owner solely for trackday use, this non-road car could just as easily race in the British GT championship or at a higher level, such is its specification. Aside from the obvious things such as the full and weldedin roll cage, the stripped interior and a single racing seat, there is plenty going on under the surface of this LHD-only machine.

While the engine remains at 385bhp, replacing the manual gearbox is a modified PDK unit of six rather than seven speeds and there is a mechanical differential lock. The suspension, with its recalibrated stability control to take account of racing tyres, borrows further from the 911 GT3, in this instance the Cup version. Race-specific changes have also been made to the braking system, including a 12-stage adjustable ABS unit, and a much larger fuel tank is fitted, with the option for an even larger safety unit.

In MR or even just ex-factory Clubsport form the modifications certainly allow the Cayman to unlock more of its considerable potential, although it is unfortunate that the model looks that it will forever be made to play second fiddle to the 911 rather than be fully developed. This is a great shame, as a car like the GT4 Clubsport gives a taste of just what the Cayman might achieve if it were allowed to do so. Indeed, as Porsche say of the car, Rebels Race Harder.

While the foregoing changes and the shedding of a worthwhile amount of weight take the GT4 to another level, the car that Ted came across is an MR version, developed by long time Porsche competition partners Manthey Racing. It incorporates further serious racing modifications including a polycarbonate windscreen and carbon fibre body panels, adjustable suspension and brake balance, a fast refuelling system and those very neat additional lights, along with various other features such as air jacks and data-logging. 9

TIPEC’S 25TH ANNIVERSARY BASH AT BEAULIEU Author Sean Smallman Photography James Garrard 11

Wow!

What a fabulous weekend, starting with our 25th Anniversary Picnic in the New Forest. There were around 100 or so of us, the majority opting to put their chairs in the shade of the trees at Anderwood. I am not sure that the bright orange B&Q buckets were in keeping with the surroundings, but full of ice they did an excellent job of keeping drinks cold. Jazz Magic soon had our feet tapping, with the trio playing very well known tunes including one of the childhood favorites from my Disney Collection album ‘The Bear Necessities’. It was a very pleasant informal gathering and the afternoon flew by. The ramblers looked a bit bemused when they stumbled across a clearing full of Porsches and a party going on. Many thanks for all the positive feedback, we will look at doing something for the Saturday next year too. Thank you to Steve Wagg for booking the venue and Jim Tarrant for sorting out the gazebo. As for Simply Porsche on the Sunday, never in my wildest dreams did I expect to see over 1,600 Porsches parked in the grounds of Beaulieu. It was a phenomenal turnout, thank you so much for joining us and making this a really special day. To get a 60% increase on last year was just overwhelming. There will not be many one day shows across Europe that attract as many P cars. It is fair to say that we struggled with so many cars turning up before 9am. We opened the gates early to get cars off the main road and prevent gridlocking the area. We already have a plan to speed things up for next year; my sincere apologies if you were caught up in the initial jam.

NEVER IN MY WILDEST DREAMS DID I EXPECT TO SEE OVER 1,600 PORSCHES PARKED IN THE GROUNDS OF BEAULIEU. AT 130

As for the show, there is not much more to say when you are looking over row after row of gleaming cars. The photographs give you a flavour of the event, though I have yet to see a picture that captures the scale of all the cars filling every bit of space in the grounds. Pretty much every model was represented including lots of early cars and the stunning orange Rauh Welt custom 911 on Dynamat’s trade stand. The trade village was very different to last year, we even have a Brazilian artist and his painted 911 bonnets. This was the first time we’ve only had one trade stand selling polish. I have already had enquiries from traders for 2019 and we have a few ideas to freshen things up and make next years Simply Porsche even better. A big thank you to James & Alison Garrard for lugging the gear around and to all the helpers on the day, giving out magazines and manning the gazebo.

EURO TOUR 2018

Author Sean Smallman Photography Sean Smallman

EVERY YEAR A GROUP OF US HEAD OFF INTO EUROPE, BUT THIS WAS OUR BIGGEST ADVENTURE TO DATE.

AT 130

ON TOUR MAY 2018 At the

‘where shall we head off to next’ meeting, I chipped in with my desire to drive the route of the Mille Miglia. Nigel had the Monaco Historique Grand Prix on his bucket list. Combining the two gave us an epic road trip of around 2,700 miles – not for the faint-hearted with some long days in the saddle. Our route was Gueux > Voges > Lake Como > Brescia > Rome > Florence > Modena > Monaco > The Alps > Epernay. On a sunny May afternoon, 10 gleaming Porsches parked outside the Chunnel Terminal building while the group drank coffee, chatting excitedly about what lay ahead. The first highlight was the obligatory photo stop at the old Grand Prix Circuit of Reims at Gueux. We then followed the D26 (Champagne Route) through a landscape of rolling vineyards and picturesque villages with stunning chateaus. Across France through Lorraine to the Voges, with an afternoon coffee stop at the top of the Grande Ballon. Some spirited driving had my 4S arriving in a cloud of steam followed by a stream of water running down the car park. A loose expansion tank cap turned out to be the problem, which was a bit of a relief given that it was the first full day of the trip. Overnight at Mulhouse near the Swiss border, where our entertaining waiter brought out the salmon and pork main courses on mountain sized portions of sauerkraut. Yum … A few hours on the Swiss motorway and we crossed the mountains into Northern Italy. We stopped for lunch at Menaggio and ate Pizza by the shore of Lake Como. A ferry across the lake to Varenna, then a short drive through to the outskirts of Brescia (which had more roundabouts than Milton Keynes). Brescia is the home of the Mille Miglia (1,000 miles) – the race starts and finishes in the city and was first run in 1927. Our route for the Mille Miglia was a combination of stages from 2016 and 1955, the year Stirling Moss won the race. Dennis Jenkinson, his navigator, was the first to use detailed pace notes. With an average speed of 99mph they finished in 10 hours and seven minutes, 32 minutes ahead of his team mate Juan Manuel Fangio in the sister Mercedes 300SLR.

We started the first stage of our 1,000 mile from the Museo Mille Miglia, housed in an old monastery built in 1008. The conversion was funded by the Automobile Club of Brescia and a few wealthy enthusiasts, and it opened to the public in 2004. The exhibits and the old racing cars got us in the mood for our homage to this historic race. We drove by Lake Garda, then across country on some very fast roads to the seaside town of Rimini. A lift took the cars down to private underground garages, while we took the passenger lift to the seventh floor for a dip in the rooftop pool and a beer on the terrace. The next leg was to Rome through the National Parks of Umbria and the Principality of San Marino. As we drove into the hills the roads got progressively worse, to the point where you had to drive well inside the speed limit or you could have easily broken a wheel. The method for fixing pot holes was unusual; a repair gang were piling loose tar into the hole and letting the passing cars flatten it down. We spent several miles dodging holes and the newly formed mounds. Rome was no exception and if anything the roads were getting worse. On the orbital you had to take emergency action to prevent blowing a tyre. I will never moan about British roads again.

YOU HAD TO TAKE EMERGENCY ACTION TO PREVENT BLOWING A TYRE. I WILL NEVER MOAN ABOUT BRITISH ROADS AGAIN.

The penultimate leg took us through more National Parks and some twisty quiet roads to Sienna, then on to our hotel on the outskirts of Florence. The best day’s driving by far, with fun roads and spectacular views of the Tuscan Countryside. Chianti was stunning – rolling hills full of vines and cypress trees and impressive villas dotted along the route with immaculately landscaped gardens. Sienna was a gem of a town, wonderful architecture with a welcoming vibe and in my opinion much nicer than Florence. I managed to get a police escort as Garmin took me through the narrow streets and into the restricted zone. The Polizia were good humored and a series of beeps followed by hand gestures got me out of the maze and back on the route to Florence.

15

The last leg took us to Bologna, then onto Modena and the Enzo Ferrari Museum. The roads were fast and twisty, great fun was had by all. One member of the gang enjoyed the roads so much he left his man bag at the mid-morning coffee stop, so that he could do the route again. The Enzo museum was a nostalgic tribute to the great man and whilst it was beautifully laid out, there was a lack of exhibits and not a great deal to look at. The short film about his life was interesting and it did leave you with a small lump in your throat. Not far from the museum was a classic car and bike dealership called Ruotedasongo. I had arranged for us to visit and we spent an hour looking around the cars, including an early Speedster, before going up to the first floor and their impressive showroom with over 1,000 bikes for sale. After breakfast we said our goodbyes as a few people headed back home and the rest of us went on to Monaco. More fast twisty roads down to the coast and a drive through the Cinque Terre past multi-coloured picture-postcard villages in the naturally formed harbours by the Med. Our base for the next few days was the Princes de Galles hotel on the sea front in Menton, where we managed to park the cars in front of the entrance. The cars did not move all weekend, as we decided that using public transport to get to Monaco was the easiest option. I must admit it was nice to have a break from driving, we had already covered around 1,700 miles. The 11th Monaco Historique did not disappoint, what a fabulous location to appreciate and watch the cream of historic racing cars. Our grandstand was in Casino Square, with a large screen TV built in the middle of the roundabout. This event is spine tingling and very different to most classic festivals. The sevenrace event is Grand Prix biased with 150 F1 cars taking part. There is just one sports car race for cars made between 1952 & 1957. It was interesting to see how the pinnacle of Motorsport had evolved over the decades. The oldest being a 1925 Bugatti 35 and the youngest from 1980, including F1 cars from Arrows, Alfa Romeo, Brabham and Lotus. Not just visually, but the variety of sound and even smell as the cars swept through Casino and down to Mirabeau. To see the old cars drifting through the corners on those narrow tyres was worth the entry fee alone. The races were keenly contested, with nose to tail battles taking place all the way through the field.

AT 130

Headline sponsor Chopard, in partnership with the Porsche Museum, provided a 1960 718, 1962 Type 804, 1969 911 and 1973 936 for the lunchtime 70th anniversary parade. Drivers included Jacky Ickx and his daughter Vanina, supported by marque ambassadors including nine times Le Mans winning legend Derek Bell and the versatile ‘Quick Vic’ Elford. The shrill of the 804’s flat eight-cylinder air cooled engine had everyone in the grandstand smiling. Karl Friedrich-Scheufele, Co-President of Choppard, had the biggest smile of the afternoon; not because he was driving the 550 Spyder, but because his passenger was a very attractive model/actress (I have not been able to find out her name), as you can see in the picture she gave me a wave. After a very relaxing weekend we had to get back in the saddle for the lazy drive back to Calais. Our preferred route through the high Alps had been closed due to snow, so we drove along the valleys through some stunning scenery. Our bed for the night was in a castle, Chateau Picomtal, overlooking the lake at Clots near Embrun. This place takes B&B to a whole new level and the individually themed bedrooms were a big hit with everyone in the group. As most of the Alpine passes in the region were closed, we headed towards Grenoble then followed the river to Annecy. This popular tourist town lies by the lake of the same name. Wandering around the old town’s cobbled streets, winding canals and pastel painted houses is a wonderful way to while away an afternoon. A small group of us found ourselves in a proper bar with an excellent menu of international beers. Unsurprisingly one beer was not enough, fortunately it was a short stagger back to our hotel.

THIS TRIP WAS FULL ON; AT THE LAST COFFEE STOP KEVIN LIKENED THE DRIVING TO DOING A TRACKDAY …

The next leg was homeward bound on a mixture of fast and twisty roads taking us into the Jura, with lunch at Autun – a Roman founded town in the Bourgogne – followed by the forests of the Parc du Horvan then onto Auxerre. As this was our last night together we booked a table at a local Vietnamese restaurant, where we enjoyed a fabulous meal and lots of chat about the many highlights of our trip.

We billed the last day as Ladies Day, for a coffee stop at a retail outlet mall and lunch in Epernay with a glass or two of fizz at one of the many champagne Chateaus. The D-roads were arrow straight with blind crests, it was great fun punching the loud pedal as we drove out of the villages. This trip was full on; at the last coffee stop Kevin likened the driving to doing a trackday – except on a track day you get to rest and let the cars cool down between sessions. He went on to ask “where are we going next?” There were a few things we learned. The Mille Miglia was not as great to drive as I had hoped. For the race the roads would be closed, whereas driving on poor quality roads in lots of traffic was not fun. I remain pleased that I did it and there were some sections that were brilliant to drive on, where you could easily imagine Stirling sliding his SLR through the bends. If I was planning this again I would plot routes that are more northern. We were also a little unlucky with the snow in the Alps as most of the passes would normally be open in May. Big respect to Tony Altman who completed the trip despite rolling his Jag a few days before and cracking a couple of ribs. The co-pilot award goes to Sat Nav Sue who guided Paul through the no vehicle zone in Florence when the city was gridlocked due to a crash on the ring road. The company was excellent as always, and we all already looking forward to our next trip.

RARE BREED

For a

company that only began making its own cars in 1948, Porsche has a proud record of unbroken participation at Le Mans since 1951. In some years there were works entries, in others works-supported private teams and if neither of those then there were always private teams and individuals keen to exploit the marque’s sporting credentials. By 1994 the great days of the 962 had passed and even the cars from Sauber, Jaguar and Nissan that had helped to eclipse its success had also had their day. The regulations had changed from Group C to LMP via the transitional 1993 season after the collapse of the World Sportscar Championship at the end of 1992, but things were looking a bit thin in the LMP1 class as the emphasis shifted from prototypes to GT cars. There were still some Porsche-powered cars contesting LMP1, such as a Kremer K8, a 962GTi (actually built from the remaining Richard Lloyd Racing components by entrant ADA Engineering) and three Courage C32’s, but the real Porsches were confined to GT1 and GT2.

Before we go on to take a look at the GT2 entry that is the subject of this piece – one of the most uncommon Porsches to ever attempt Le Mans – it is worth mentioning one of the GT1 competitors which actually went on to win the race. This too was something of an almost-Porsche, one of two Dauer 962LM’s that exhibited such a masterful piece of rule interpretation that the regulations were altered for 1995 to stop it happening again! The Dauer was a road car based on the 962 and they – or were they prompted by Porsche? – had the clever idea of converting three of them into GT1 racing cars. Of course, being based on a purpose-designed competition vehicle (and a very successful one) was certainly an advantage when turning a road car into a racer.

ONE OF THE MOST UNCOMMON PORSCHES EVER TO ATTEMPT LE MANS

However, we digress from our subject, which is a rather special 968. Never a model with much of an international competition profile in its day, the 968 nevertheless appeared at events in a surprising number of European countries and along with championships for the Club Sport model held in Spain and Germany it was particularly well developed by teams in America and Canada. That meant examples sometimes even cropped up in the Sebring and Daytona endurance races, but when it came to Le Mans the model only competed there on one occasion and that was in 1994.

For these events the car had been crewed by Dane John Nielsen and the German Thomas Bscher, but for LM they were joined by Briton Lindsay OwenJones. Nielsen was something of an endurance racing veteran, having driven for the Sauber and Jaguar teams – including winning Le Mans for the latter in 1990 – while Bscher was much less experienced, although he went on to compete extensively with McLarens in endurance events. Owen-Jones also had a subsequent McLaren sports-racing career which included coming 5th at Le Mans in 1996, so all were drivers of some ability.

The car used was one of just four Turbo RS versions produced by Porsche Motorsport during the 1992–95 life of the 968. Based on the Turbo S model of which an additional 13 were constructed, Porsche had ambitions to produce a limited series of 50 to 100 turbo 968s, but it may be that they decided that they were a little too close to rivalling the 911, in the same way that the Cayman is prevented from realising its full potential today.

The 968 was up against 21 rivals in GT2 comprising various 911 Carrera RSR, Honda NSX, Lotus Esprit, Chevrolet Corvette, Ferrari 348,Alpine A610 and Venturi 400 entries, so it was obviously not going to be easy.

The impetus for the Turbo project was the new German GT Championship and the cars had an eight valve engine which in RS form produced 337bhp, although 350 was available outside the series. All of the expected readyto-race features such as a limited slip differential, adjustable suspension, bigger brakes, a full roll cage, harness and extinguisher system and a racing fuel tank were included, but while body modifications were made the cars presented a remarkably standard appearance. The one featured here (WP0ZZZ96ZNS820065) began life in Guards Red and was delivered to the Joest team, but it was lightly raced by them in the ADAC series during 1993 before passing to fellow German team Seikel Motorsport for 1994. They used the car three times prior to Le Mans, in the Dijon Four Hours (Grid 12th/Finished 13th), the Le Mans test session (34th out of 35) and the Paris 1,000Km (Grid 12th/DNF – turbo failure). As the last race was only three weeks before Le Mans, it was either a good proving exercise or a rather risky strategy!

Practice saw the car 39th out of 50 qualifiers, ahead of eight other GT2 cars, two GT1 Dodge Vipers and even the LMP2 Harrier, so while not ultracompetitive it was a reasonable position. In a 24 hour race – aside from being ahead of the traffic on the initial laps – a high grid position is much less crucial than it might be in a much shorter ‘sprint’ event. On race day two of the GT2 competitors failed to make the start but it was all over for the 968 team on lap 84 when an accident caused them to be the 14th retirement of what went on to be a 345 lap race, although it was still a valiant effort in one of the world’s toughest motorsport challenges. After this the car was used a couple more times by the team before being sold to American Lloyd Hawkins, who raced it there over the following three seasons. It would be true to say that the 968 became more widely raced after it ceased production than it did at the time and so its contemporary competition use – at least in Europe – has been rather overlooked. That is all the more reason to remember that during the model’s short production life examples such as this one did have their moments in the limelight, however briefly.

HEAVEN IS A PLACE ON EARTH PORSCHE EXPERIENCE CENTRE, SILVERSTONE Author Chris Wickers Photography Chris Wickers

Some 31 years ago Belinda Carlisle sang ‘Heaven is a place on earth’, this could perhaps be interpreted as the Porsche Experience Centre at Silverstone. As anyone with a partner will know, spending lots of money on cars does not always go down well. However the gods were shining on me, and an auction for the ‘Experience’ was raising much needed money for my wife’s favourite charity – so it wasn’t spending money on Porsche, it was giving money to Farleigh Hospice! Sorted – happy wife, happy Farleigh, and happy husband! After attending a school leavers evening for my daughter (who wanted to be insured on my 911 but isn’t as the cheapest quote was £15,995), I headed up to the Travelodge at Towcester, and then on to Silverstone. Having arrived early I managed to sneak a quick picture next to their line up at the entrance. The weather was not kind. It had been raining hard which all adds to the fun, or so their website says. A very comprehensive freshly cooked (full English if you wanted it) breakfast, a briefing including how to set the best driving position, and then out to the car … a brand new 911 with PDK accompanied by Keith, my instructor for the morning.

AT 130

There are two circuits: one with various bends, ‘The Handling Circuit’, and ‘The Straights’ with the name providing an extremely accurate description. I am guessing I may be typical in that my initial approach was to accelerate hard to achieve maximum speed, however the latest 911 is very different to my 996 and smoothness did not initially come into the equation. This was where Keith came in, demonstrating the ideal positioning and braking points, and teaching me where to look. My drive not only became smoother, but also a lot quicker. The straights were ideal for playing with ‘Launch Control’ and the word here which springs to mind is pure abuse. Foot hard on the brake, in ‘Drive’ and accelerator flat to the floor, (the car sounded terrific by the way) and then releasing the brake … and off we go with a slight loss of traction due to the weather. Up to 70mph(ish) followed by applying maximum braking using the ABS. The next time was with maximum braking and no hands on the steering wheel which was extremely impressive! Finally the same again with maximum braking and steering to learn how you can control and steer a car whilst using ABS.

The wet surface mirroring sheet ice (they call it the Kick Plate) caught me out the first time and the car spun inelegantly out of control, however subsequently and knowing what to expect, some quick reactions produced a much more dignified response. The wife and daughter would describe this as ‘boys and their toys’ having fun – however there is a serious side and teaching skid control may be invaluable (Hopefully not!) The ‘Ice Hill’ was a similar experience. The skid pan as I call it, or ‘low friction’ surface provided yet more fun trying to do powerslides and not lose control – undoubtedly my weakest area of the day. Having completed everything, a free choice was offered as to where to go back to. As you can probably guess, I picked ‘Launch Control’ – I am told I seldom smile, but the phrase ‘grinning like a Cheshire Cat’ comes to mind. The centre ser ved a three course lunch afterwards which was excellent, restaurant quality, and then sadly back down to earth and making my way home. Heaven is definitely available on Earth – it is the Porsche Experience Centre at Silverstone!

SPARRING PARTNERS PORSCHES AT THE 2018 SPA CLASSIC Author Martin Broadribb Photography Ted Walker

While we have a thriving historic motorsport scene in Britain there are many cars that we rarely if ever see here, even though some are maintained by British companies. However, the big continental historic race meetings offer the opportunity to not only see some rare Porsches but to see them in action too and the 2018 Spa Classic was no exception. Here is a selection of just some of the interesting models to be found there.

Above: After a number of one-off races over the last few years, 2018 saw the establishment of a championship for pre-1966 2.0L 911’s called the 2.0L Cup. The organisers, Peter Auto in association with Britons Lee MaxtedPage and James Turner, were aiming for an entry of around 40 cars and with 38 at Spa they are obviously satisfying a latent demand for competition among those owning these early examples.

Left: The 962 was phenomenally successful in terms of the number produced and the results achieved. The non-factory teams were always striving to obtain an advantage and this led to some of them reinterpreting the cars, especially as time passed and rival makes appeared. This is one of eleven 962C K6 models produced by the Kremer team using a carbon fiber instead of aluminium sheet tub and many other modifications to keep it competitive into the 1990’s.

AT 130

Above: In a corner of the paddock two 914s appear to tower over a 904, although they are quite low cars themselves. The example on the left has acquired some bigger driving lamps in the style of the contemporar y racing versions and wears the US specification side indicators.

Left: Built as Jo Siffert’s private entry for the 1971 Can-Am series, this 917/10 was fitted with a 5.0L engine as his request rather than a 4.5L unit. Given that the team comprised just the driver and his two mechanics and that they missed the initial rounds the car had a successful season, sometimes finishing as high as second.

Below: This is a very late factory-built 962C that was supplied new to the Japanese Trust team but only used for testing. This meant that it was never raced until 2015 after recommissioning and so is one of –if not the- most original and correct examples to be found.

Left: Surely the car with the highest louvre to panel area ratio ever, this 1960 356B Carrera Abarth GTL is one of around 21 made from a projected batch of 40. The project came to a premature end due to delivery and quality control problems with the subcontrac tors that Abarth used for the coachwork but the cars were very successful in competition, beginning with the 1.6L four-cam engine but progressing to the 2.0L.

Above: The 910 was the successor to the 906 and although almost 30 were built the factory only raced the model during 1967. They went on to have a much longer competition life and this early example passed through the hands of a number of Italian owners. Powered by a 2.0L flat six this good-looking car is shown looking as it did on its debut at the Sebring 12 Hours where it finished 3rd and won its class.

A VOLVO 240 MAY NOT BE THE OBVIOUS CHOICE OF BRAKE CALLIPER DONOR FOR A 944, BUT COLIN HAMMERTON GAVE IT A TRY …

944 CALLIPER UPGRADE (ON A BUDGET)

After seven years of

944 ownership and having refurbished all four callipers in the past, I started to think about upgrades to improve the adequate but ugly standard early 944 set-up. At times like this Google is your friend! I typed in ‘944 calliper upgrades’ and started the process of reading all the forums. Boxster callipers were the preferred option on many sites and forums but a set of Boxster callipers doesn’t come cheap at £350+!

A thread on a couple of American forums spoke about the Volvo 240/260 series cars having fourpot callipers that were a direct bolt on to the 944 spindles. On to eBay I went and after a week or so a pair of old, tired looking, Volvo 240 callipers appeared for the princely sum of £30. I hit the ‘Buy it Now’ button and awaited their arrival. Four days later a parcel arrived and I opened it to find a very sad looking pair of paint-flaking rusty callipers. I removed the brake pipes and pads etc, took off the seals and removed the pistons. Next job was take them to the electroplaters to be cleaned and yellow zinc plated. Now I had time to order a new seal kit (3801) from Big Red and a new brake fitting kit (MBA 965) and brake pads (MGB576) from Mintex. Next I ordered six new Stainless Steel 7/16 UNF brake

AT 130

nipples from CCS Fasteners (01506 834 344), eight Brass M10 male brake unions and two three-way M10 Brass brake ‘T’ unions from eBay. I also ordered new Brembo Discs from Euro Car Parts, bought in the sale at 60% off, and new wheel bearings from Max at Frazerparts. May as well do them too, whilst everything’s apart. When the callipers came back I undid the four bolts that hold the two halves together and split each calliper, being careful not to loose the O-rings. I then passed a 4.5mm drill through all the fluid passages to make sure everything was clean, bolted them back together and test fitted them to the car. The outer edge of the disc was perilously close (0.5mm) to touching the inside of the calliper so out came the file and a couple of mm of cast iron was removed. They now fitted perfectly and cleared the disc very well. Next job was to mask off the cylinder bores where the pistons fit and paint them. A couple of coats of etch primer and then a couple of coats of hi-temp brake calliper paint did the job nicely. Once dried I added some Porsche calliper decals and clear lacquered them to protect the decals from the ravages of heat, road salt and brake dust. Now the masking tape could be removed and the new seals and pistons put back in with the assembly grease provided.

The hardest job was making two new brake pipes each side to connect the callipers to the three-way ‘T’ union. This is needed as the 240 callipers have two inlet ports instead of the usual one. I found the best way of connecting everything up was to attach the ‘T’ union to the strut at the point where the brake hose would normally go through. This was done by leaving the rubber grommet in place and bolting it up with two large washers and an M5 stainless nut and bolt. The brake hose was then connected to the ‘T’ union. Once everything was in place I tightened all the bolts and unions, popped in the brake pads and set about pressure bleeding the whole system. I had also fitted a new ATE Master Cylinder (132330010) from Euro Car Parts whilst everything was in bits, the old one was 33 years old after all! The result is an improvement over stock without being too fierce and overbraked. I’m very pleased with the result. Emergency braking does result in a total front wheel lock up because of the lack of ABS. The Calliper rebuild and sundries alone came to £180.77 including all fittings, pipes and pads. That’s a lot cheaper than a pair of Boxster callipers!

Discs £46.45 Master Cylinder £118.94 Wheel bearings £33.60 Callipers £30.00 Cleaning & Plating £25.00 Fitting kit £7.78 Seal kit £18.99 Brake Pads £16.00 Paint £20.00 Nipples £24.00 10mm male fittings £8.00 Three-way ‘T’ unions £15.00 3/16 kupronickel pipe £16.00 Pagid dot 4 brake fluid £6.00 Total job spend

September 17th (Monday) Club night at the Red Lion

May started with a trip down to Donington for a Sunday of historic racing. A number of members from our region made it down for the day. There was a lot to see in the pit area, on the track and in the infield where various clubs had brought their classics down for the day. It was a great day out and well worth the ticket price, especially with the club discount (and thanks to North West for providing butties). The month continued with some of our members joining up with North West region for an open evening at Jasmin Porschalink. Porsches on the Prom in Llandudno was also attended by a number of cars from our region, including a 944 and 928SE (which was one of only four 928s spotted on the day) The main event for the club in June was Simply Porsche which was a massive success with a huge number of cars in attendance. It is a long way from our region but at least one of our cars made it, meeting up with members from London region to join a convoy down to Beaulieu. On June 16th Blyton Park echoed to the sound of Porsches (and a couple of very loud Renault Cleos) when we joined up with members from around the country for a track day. Sadly my car had to retire early with a leaking radiator. And I wasn’t the only one as another 996 also suffered a major leak. Porsches parked next to each other, one losing coolant from the front and the other from the rear! For those that did make it through the whole day on the track it was a great day, driving hard round two different track layouts. I for one hope to get out on the track again now that my 944 is repaired. After a mix up with the dates and a clash with an England football match we held our club night on the 25th (rather than 18th). The evening was well attended and weather was good enough for us to have the meeting outside. We had a couple of non-Porsches to look at (and listen to), in the form of a DB9 and 200+bhp MG Midget.

It’s been a fantastic summer so far with a number of car shows culminating at Cholmondeley Castle for the 70th Celebrations of the first Porsche 356 being launched on the 8th of June in 1948. It was also cause for celebration if you managed to get fed and watered but it was a great day all round, culminating in a wonderful meal and get together at the Red Lion in Pickmere on the Saturday evening. It was yet another marvellous Cheshire & Staffs day out at Trentham Gardens along with the guys and girls from Central region. 16 cars and pretty much 30 members all making short work of the tea and coffee and almost 40 bacon barms! As well as the wonderful array of Porsches on the stand there were some very nice cars out there including a 1985 Carrera 3.2 and an early 911SC … The day was nicely topped off again with a very pleasant pint and a meal at Neil Morrissey’s place, The Plume of Feathers. Thanks to everyone that came out to the Kilton Inn for the club nights with the June meeting welcoming 33 members in over 25 cars including some stunning Porsches from the 944s in coupe and cab form, 928s to 986, 987 and 718 Boxster to pretty much the whole range of 911s including two Carrera 4S, GTS, 991, 997 and 996s and beautiful classics from Ford, Lotus, Triumph, Peugeot, and Rob’s magnificent Ford Zephyr convertible. S OUTH YORKSHIRE & NORTH NOTTS.

Monthly meetings are held second Wednesday of every month from 7pm at The Golden Pheasant, 1 Main Street, Etton, Peterborough PE6 7DA. A small number of us made the annual trip to Donington Historic to watch some of the best classic car racing on the calendar. Great to meet up with the other regions and meet some new like-minded enthusiasts. In May we were treated to some very rare Porsches at Car-Iconics at Oakham, both race and road. Cars ranged from a lovely wide-bodied 3.2 Supersport to a stunning red 993 Turbo with only 12 miles on the clock! The weekend was 70th Anniversary themed with Porsche cupcakes and Bratwurst. A great time was had by all. Thanks to all at Car-Iconics for a great weekend. We were invited to attend a Sunday morning detailing day at Petrolhead Detailing where we watched demonstrations on car cleaning and detailing techniques at their state of the art premises. Chris and his team were excellent in their knowledge and advice. Their attention to detail was impressive. Stuart has just returned from his pilgrimage to the Porsche museum. He then continued his drive to Stuttgart, to include Switzerland, returning through central France. Driving some 2,260 miles in his loyal Cayman which never missed a beat and thrived on the steep gradients and hairpin bends! He’s hopefully writing an article to go through the whole adventure. Our monthly meetings at the Golden Pheasant have been very enjoyable with an average of 15–20 Porsches and a couple of people coming who are hoping to become owners at some stage. It’s always a fantastic atmosphere with anecdotes, banter and advice coming from all angles. Finally, I’d like to call out that we’ve now got our 50th signed up TIPEC member for the Peterborough region. On behalf of Michael (ARO) and Stuart (RO) we’d like to thank every single one of you for joining a growing and enthusiastic club. We must be doing something right!

At last the weather has improved! Since our last update, we have had a couple of fantastic monthly meets. In May, Alan Shaw brought his 1969 rally 911 along, fresh off the boat having returned from South East Asia where he had recently completed the Trans-Asia Rally. Alan gave a fascinating talk covering the history of the car, and his exploits on various rallies around the world. The car is an absolute belter so we were all glad to hear about its development and plans for the future, as well as having a good old poke around at its innards. In June we were finally allowed some warm sunshine and the cars certainly came out to enjoy it, with a brand new GT3 and a very nearly new GT3RS joining us for the evening. There was also a fascinating pre-war Alfa parked outside the pub when we arrived. The owner seemed very flattered with the attention that he got from a load of Porsche fans and very graciously gave us a guided tour of his car and gave it plenty of beans when he drove off. AT 130

Also in June, a number of us enjoyed a very quiet and sunny evening trackday at Donington Park courtesy of Bookatrack.com. There were three of us driving (993 Turbo, 996 and Cayman) with another three cars along to watch. It was a cracking evening – not too many cars on track and great camaraderie amongst all those attending with plenty of other Porches on track too. By the time you read this, there will have been another of the popular Car Café meets at Stratstone Nottingham on 7th July, and we have organised a run out to Rutland water on July 8th. I encourage you to sign up to our Facebook page (facebook.com/groups/985059581625524). This is by far the easiest way of communicating with members so you will get the earliest updates on regional activities on the Facebook page. As ever, if any members have suggestions for group activities, please give me a shout.

Meetings are held fourth Tuesday of each month from 7pm at The Woolpack, Fornham St Martin, Bury St Edmonds, Suffolk IP31 1SW. 01284 753 380 www.thewoolpackfornham.co.uk It has been a busy couple of months and it ain’t slowing down anytime soon! The 25th Picnic/Beaulieu was another great success, even if the queuing was a little slow, but what do you expect when 1,600 cars need to go through one gate! Apparently, this will be addressed by next year. Blyton Park trackday started damp, drying out quickly, turning into the day that everyone hoped for. (Thank you Laurence, Yorkshire region for organising). Everyone behaved themselves, adhering to the rules set out in the drivers briefing. Great mix of Porkers, and we shared the track with several regular race-prepared trackday heroes: Renault Clios, Aerial Atom,

On our WotY to Whitby we will be meeting up with the Yorkshire & North East regions. Thanks to Ian & Therese for organising this one, which commences on the weekend of me writing this submission – more to follow. This will be followed by a few of us going on our bi-yearly pilgrimage to the Le Mans Classic, the Silverstone Classic and then the return of the victorious Le Mans Porsche cars fresh from their victory, for the next round of World Endurance Cars Super Season at Silverstone. The annual bash at Beaulieu turned out to be a record breaker with I believe over 1,800 Porsches in attendance, the weather was scorching and we had a very relaxed day wandering around the cars in the car park, I think all flavours of Porsche were represented, personally I love the older cars and I wasn’t disappointed at all. Central had their track day at Curborough Sprint Course, this was fully subscribed again and there were some pretty rapid cars here, not all were Porsches but all were driven in anger. Fathers Day saw us joining up with our friends from Cheshire and South Staffs at Trentham Gardens for a Gemini event, C&SS were the perfect hosts, supplying us with tea and bacon barms, and we displayed our new banner for the first time. We had another well attended coffee morning at Barton under Needwood in the glorious sunshine, it was nice to see so many people. The beginning of July sees us double booked with Cars in the Park, a joint get together with PCGB and Classic Le Mans. I shall be in France but will miss CitP as it’s a great show. The end of July is The Silverstone Classic, a great event not to be missed by petrolheads. August 13th is our annual Show and Shine at The Bull’s Head. This is historically our best attended club night of the year, the favourite cars are voted by yourselves and the cars are very well presented. Unfortunately the event at Lupin Farm this year is cancelled, I believe due to illness.

Thanks to the weather, we saw a record breaking Colmworth Cars event with over 350 bacon rolls served in a morning across two

We also went and joined other regions for the Donnington Historic Racing and enjoyed the racing and company. One of our local specialists Dove House car put on a Breakfast clinic for us and we enjoyed a generous breakfast, car health check and of course the wonderful cars they have for sale. A big thanks to Simon and the team for their hospitality and knowledge. We have enjoyed two track events over the last couple of months, one at Bedford Autodrome and one at Blyton Park with other regions. Trackdays may not be for everyone but it is a great experience and we will organise more throughout the year. The next one is planned for mid-July so keep your eyes peeled if you’d like to get trackside!

Unfortunately the June Goat meeting clashed with Simply Porsche; Peter and I were pleased to see some of you there; brief report below! At the July Goat meeting an ice cream vendor was outside the pub, most welcome on a very hot Sunday morning.

The ACE Café gathering in May was well attended and with good weather, an evening to be enjoyed. My planned trip North for a specialist car service near Durham was deferred to June so I was pleased to make the event as normal. The June meeting saw the car park full of Porsches by 18:30! The sun shone and the evening was bathed in a warm glow. A great turnout, with three very nice 356 models on display in contrast to the range of newer cars.

Bromley Motor Pageant, which is the largest static classic car show in Europe, is held close to the longest day of the year. 27 members set off on that quiet Sunday morning to converge on Norman Park, where Sean Smallman was pacing the perimeter of our 30sqm pitch and parking members up. Everyone else piled in to erect the Gazebo and within 30 mins there was tea, coffee

Old and (relatively) new side by side at Bromley

The gathering at Beaulieu Motor museum for Simply Porsche was immense; a count of 1,600+ Porsches on the day set a record for the event and possibly for any single marque event in the UK! The weather was excellent, the club picnic on the Saturday was very friendly. Peter and I stayed in a B+B on the edge of Lymington, so relaxing evenings on the Saturday and Sunday allowed a few drinks with the cars safely tucked away. In mid-June Peter travelled up to Lincolnshire in his GT4 for a trackday at Blyton Park, organised by the Yorkshire region. Peter reported the Blyton track was a rather small and tight circuit which did not stretch the legs of the Cayman enough (ie. he didn’t get out of third gear) nevertheless he reported an enjoyable, safe and well run event. In September my wife and I will be undertaking a road trip in Pakistan, driving in a group of classic cars. We will be departing from Lahore, then

My first month as Regional Organiser has been a busy one, attending events and meeting other ROs at their club meets, such as Fairmile, Cobham, this is an opportunity for all Porsche owners to show their cars and exchange information, as well as a social evening. Simply Porsche at Beaulieu was an amazing day out, with an expanse of cars in excess of 1,600 that turned up. A run out to the Bolney Stage to meet Surrey & Sussex region for their club night and car swap event, this was a great event to switch cars and drive or travel as a passenger to experience different cars. The annual Classic Car event at the Deer Hut, Liphook was a charity event raising money for the local scouts groups. It was very well attended with a wide variety of ‘yesterday era’ classic cars. Our region’s club meet in June at the Links Tavern had a good turn out with new people and lifetime members coming for the first time.

Wheels after refurb at The Wheel Specialists

All Porsche owners have the opportunity to have a free Porsche Main Dealer inspection. I took my 996 Carrera 4 to my local dealer in Portsmouth. It was a full 1.5 hours inspection and they noticed the front wheel lips were the wrong way round, ie. the front was on the back and vice versa, and recommended ‘The Wheel Specialists’. Other than that revelation, I was very pleased with the outcome, to find all was needed was a replacement petrol filler cap! I went along to ‘The Wheel Specialists’ as recommended who deal solely in alloy wheel refurbishment. In wanting to change the colour of my wheels to Porsche grey and add to the wheel hubs, they were then able to put the wheels back as they should have been. The staff were friendly and informative and overall a very good service. I am very happy with the new look to my car. It is something to think about, ‘check your nuts’ for a safer drive. The Wheel Specialists are in Fareham, Hampshire, PO15 5RU. Those who went to Beaulieu and Le Mans had fun and we were blessed with good weather as far back as Donington Historic, which I went to for the first time and loved the setting. Its been great to hear from new members, particularly when they join at the various events we hold and want to get involved. Our club nights continue to be a popular meeting point on the first Tuesday of every month.

Coming up we have the Dursley Rotary Club rally, Weymouth Porsche on the Prom, Sherborne Classics at the Castle and many more events – all bringing different people together with a shared passion for cars. Look out for news and photos on our Facebook page (Porsche Enthusiasts Club Bristol Southwest & South Wales). I am also now really starting to think ahead to our Wales weekend in September as I know we will visit new places, make new friends and have a ball! Please get in touch if you want any more information or want to join in on future events. I also hope that some members will offer to organise Sunday drives as we move into Autumn and Winter – they can be a lovely way of getting together in different parts of the region/country.
