March saw the launch of the new Cayman and I went along to Porsche Centre Silverstone to see the car in the flesh.

Robin Simpson's team were brilliant hosts, looking after a packed out the dealership.

There were three of the new mid engined coupes on display as well as David Piper's 917, which for me was the star of the evening. Judging by the amount people in the showroom I would say that the new Cayman will be a big hit. Despite costing in the region of around seventy thousand pounds, after you have ticked the right options. The 991 GT3 and Turbo S will be next to make an appearance.

Porshce 911 will feature at the Goodwood Festival of speed with a special display at the event.

The one-off 911-inspired sculpture promises to be a highly distinctive ‘installation’ displayed prominently outside Goodwood House.

Silverstone Classic is trying to get nine hundred and eleven 911s on track during the festival.

Porsche Club GB are organising this for them, we have asked if they need any support.

April is a busy month for the Club with the AGM taking place after the Easter weekend.

The transport museum is a great venue and it would be nice to see a really big display of Porsches in Millennium Square. Please let us know if you are coming along, details are in club news. We still require nominations for the posts of Communications Director and Advertising Manager. In order for the Club to run efficiently we need a complete Management Committee.

If you are interested in either of the roles drop me a line or feel free to give me a call.

We also have the trackday in April, at the time of writing there are still places available.

This is a great opportunity to drive your Porsche at speed and feel just how capable they really are. Spectators are also welcome, you will wish you were taking part and not sat on the sidelines if you come along. There is a Club trip organised for next years Classic Le Mans. Staying in Mulsanne for three nights and then onto Orleans for four nights. Our base to explore the Loire Valley and the beautiful Chateaux’s of the region. The trip is limited to just 12 places and we have booked good quality hotels. The advert in Club News has all the details.

We need lots of entries for the Show and Shine competition sponsored by Meguiar’s. Modern or Classic, the competition is all about paintwork that shines. The winner will be invited to join the Meguiar’s display at the NEC in November. There have been a few changes locally with new venues for the North West and the Cheshire/ Staffordshire regions.

On 9th February Craig Moore lost his battle with cancer.

Our thoughts and sympathies are with Sheila and his family. Members from both Thames Valley Regions followed the procession to the church with a 20 Porsche convoy. I am sure he would have been looking down with that cheeky grin he was well known for.

Silverstone Classic July 26–28th (Friday–Sunday)

Blyton Park is new Tarmac with a combination of long straights, slow and fast corners, and large tarmac run off areas. This event is probably the safest arena you will find to drive your Porsche as it was designed to be driven—fast.

The format is open pit lane and we have limited the event to just 50 cars. This will ensure there is plenty of room on track and give entrants time to get into a rhythm.

Professional instructors are available free of charge for those that would like to improve their lap times. Additional drivers and passengers are allowed.

Jon Mitchell from JMGarage, Porsche Independent Specialists, from Christchurch, will be on hand with technical advice. Jon will have a variety of lubes, a diagnostic kit and his tool box with him just in case there are any minor issues mechanically on the day.

Helmets are required and are available to hire, arms and legs must be covered.

The Club will have a display at this event including infield parking.

Montgomery is one of their glossierst car waxes, specially designed to last the winter. John R.P. Johnstone, Director of Mitchell & King, explains: “Like the Golf Gti, this started as an ‘out of hours’ project. My idea was to provide you with the glossiest car wax which could last a winter. This was no small feat as stereotypically natural waxes which offer sublime gloss have limited durability.

“The development process for Montgomery was very lengthy as a wax which must last a certain length of time has to be tested for said amount of time. What I thought was a trade-off resulted in gloss levels more usually attributed to a concours wax.

“As the months continued we came across a product which was widely used in the cosmetics industry for its ‘staying power’, typically used to bond cosmetics to skin.

After much searching, we had managed to secure a sample of this ‘wonder’ product.

The question was, how well will it work in a car wax and is it even transferable?

“The result was staggering, not only did the wax behave very differently, as it turned out the new ingredient was highly hydrophobic.

It also boosted the levels of gloss.

“After much tinkering with the recipe we engaged our detailers, who are based around the world, to test the wax in a variety of conditions and on a variety of cars. The feedback was very encouraging and teamed with my own findings I knew that I had a wax which was highly unique.

“We decided to use pure Brazilian Ivory Carnauba teamed with our new stable-mate which assists in the long-term bond of the wax and the enhancement of gloss.

As winter can be exceptionally dry and hard on a cars paintwork we utilised oils more akin to a high-end moisturiser in the refinement of Montgomery.

“This wax is designed to encapsulate the vehicles true finish, offering truly translucent protection. The 100% natural, exotic ingredients are hand poured into a Royal Brierley Jar. The standard scent for Montgomery is Chocolate Truffle, this can be altered by request.”

Porsche’s 911 to take centre stage at the 2013 Goodwood Festival of Speed Goodwood is honouring the 50th anniversary of the Porsche 911 by making it this year’s main ‘Central Feature’ sculpture outside Goodwood House at the 2013 Festival of Speed on 11–14th July .

The 911 has featured at every single Goodwood Festival, from the first event in 1993, when 27,500 enthusiasts turned-up, to the 185,000+ visitors that attended last year.

Over 820,000 Porsche 911s have been built since 1963, and examples of each of its seven generations will be present at this year’s Festival. A number of significant 911s, along with other important competition Porsches, are set to be in action at the event, including examples of the 356, 908, 917, 956 and 962.

Member’s cars Wayne Morley wonders whether he might be TIPEC’s first disabled Porsche driver … and whether his Cayman’s relatively heavy clutch counts as leg exercises for his physiotherapy?

Hello enthusiasts. I took the plunge and bought a ‘for weekends’ 2006 Cayman S with 41K on the clock in November 2012 after my father sadly died some 10 months earlier. I thought long and hard about spending some of my inheritance on the car that made me shake all over when I drove it for the first time—the shakes were accompanied by goose bumps as I’d never driven anything that had the power and feel that this had, just the usual Golfs and Astras followed my youthful dabble with an XR2 and XR3i.

What possessed me? The Fiesta Popular Plus I’d had previously was much more fun!

My ‘other half’ found TIPEC (she finds most things) after I’d been browsing PCGB and, having read about it, decided TIPEC was more me (us) and we’ve not regretted it. We loved the dealership we bought the silver Cayman from (Peter Nash cars in Warsash) as they ‘just felt right’. Not a hint of pushiness and so fantastically helpful and patient (we’d been there at least six times asking very basic questions).

I don’t think we’d have bought elsewhere to be honest as it really was touch and go as, for us, it was a financial gamble. We latched onto their included six month warranty (with an option to renew) big time.

After being contacted/reassured by RO Steve Wagg a number of times (thanks Steve!) we attended Southern Region’s Christmas dinner and found a fantastic bunch of people all willing to eagerly advise on the issues about the car that had already started to concern us—and still are a bit, but we feel more at ease with it having chatted to these guys and spending many hours reading up on the forum. A big thanks to everyone that we came across, be it in the flesh or on screen!

I’d said, somewhere in the process, that ‘… disabled people don’t have Porsches’ Well now they do. I wonder if there are any others?

My main reason for contributing here is my unusual situation— perhaps unique? I would imagine (though not confirmed) that I’m the only disabled member of TIPEC. Actually, I consider myself semidisabled as I don’t use a chair or even sticks (yet) but I do struggle to get around (and tend to fall over—even without my beloved real ale and/or red wine). ’Er indoors told me off when I was trying to decide whether or not to purchase as I’d said, somewhere in the process, that “… disabled people don’t have Porsches.” Well now they do—I wonder if there are any others? My legs are very weak indeed and sometimes the clutch feels too heavy. I’d opted for a manual (for the first time in 12 years) as it felt more like a real drive than the Tiptronic Boxster I’d also tried). I don’t know why in the end I opted for the Cayman above the Boxster given that I love convertibles. I just loved the look of it—so much so that I just hoped that it would fit in my small garage when I got it home (it did, but only just).

I get left knee shake on the clutch sometimes but it does seem to diminish the more I drive it and she when warms up the clutch feels lighter. For 12 years I’ve had cars supplied by Motability (with free insurance, tax etc.), and still have an Insignia diesel auto. I’d moved to automatics six years ago and so a manual (which I’d been missing) was a surprising choice. I’d always thought that the range of cars available on this otherwise great scheme was limited.

It seemed to me that disabled people, excepting, in a lot of cases, their physical needs and restrictions, were getting a rough deal.

Why can’t a disabled person have a Porsche? Of course it primarily comes down to the financial workings of the Motability scheme but I

remain unconvinced that they couldn’t do more to put the physically impoverished on equal terms (but perhaps Porsche is stretching it).

The Disability Discrimination Act, as I understand it, exists to ensure that everything is done to allow disabled people to live their lives equally. A newly constructed local swimming pool, when I went there for the first time to watch my son train (he hopes to reach the Brazil Paralympics as he’s inherited my condition), bizarrely had no seating whatsoever in the ‘Swimming Viewing Area’ and the usual perspex viewing screen was made of brick! Exactly how would a ‘wheelchaired’ viewer see a darned thing? They can’t basically and I’ve made my protest. I’ve never heard of or seen a Porsche adaptation for the disabled. It’s pretty obvious that a Cayman won’t take a wheel chair but I’d imagine a steering knob could easily be fitted (hmmm). What about lightening off the clutch for people like me, or fitting a hand accelerator? Maybe it’s possible but, no doubt, very expensive— another reason why they’re not offered I suppose. Having this car, with it’s heavy clutch, does however motivate me to do more of the leg exercises I’m supposed to do, and that’s got to be a good thing.

The car itself is just terrific but not without fault. I’ve already replaced, under warranty, the oil separator which turned out to be the cause of ridiculous oil use, four out of six coil packs are cracked and one of the hydraulic lifters is noisy/lazy. I intend to get these sorted one way or another—certainly before we head off on the September European tour with Sean and his cronies. How well will my left leg cope with that I wonder? I guess I’ll have to start driving it more … poor me!

I

have no idea what, at the mid-life crisis age of 55, inspired me to think it would be a good idea to sit on the tail of another car at over 160 mph, slam on brakes and drop four gears to hurtle through a blind chicane and accelerate like a demon to try and cut through on the exit of the bend. My wife says I am in ‘the menoporsche’.

She's probably right. Wives often are.

2012 was my first year in circuit racing. To have finished with a 2nd in class and 5th overall in the Porsche GT3 Cup Championship has made me realise how achievable things are and how we should ignore the naysayers around us and have some faith in ourselves. One thing that I have realised as I’m getting older is that if you are truly passionate about something it seems to make everything possible.

So where did my ‘menoporsche’ start? Three years ago I bought a Boxster S PDK and started doing trackdays.

After a short time I was doing lots of track days and took instruction. It helped hugely and showed me how badly I had been driving previously. I got to understand braking and turn points, racing lines and got a good idea of what these amazing cars can do.

At every bend I was amazed how that car gripped and came out fighting ready for the straights.

I was getting faster and changed the Boxster for a Cayman S manual which felt a bit more rigid to me.

The Cayman soon gave way to a 996 GT3 RS. A totally new and different driving experience from the hugely forgiving, and brilliantly balanced, Cayman. A new challenge! It was only downhill from there. I needed to be more competitive and track days weren’t the right place.

”

I did my racing licence and started hillclimbs and sprints in 2011. Halfway through the season I switched to a 997 GT3 RS which was more of a challenge on such narrow tracks. Quite oddly I actually won the production class.

It was great fun and I learnt a lot about handling the car in reasonable safety as each car is on the track individually. But that was the problem. I needed to be in a pack. With other drivers on a big track and a race that lasted for nearly half an hour, not just a few minutes.

Time to upgrade.

This time I needed a proper factory built race car and opted for a 996 GT3 Cup Car. I signed up for the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge as that seemed a sensible option.

Not horrendously expensive, a decent number of races, interesting tracks and a wonderful bunch of people from Porsche Motorsport. I ran the car with Fernsport of Silverstone. They were great. I used a racing instructor, Gary Marsh from Need 4 Speed, to get me faster and teach me about sightlines etc.

My first race was in March 2012 on the Snetterton 200 track. It was incredibly exciting to be out on a proper race track with a genuine race car. The balance of the grid was predominantly 997 Cup Cars all driven by far more experienced (and younger) drivers than me. Just the smell of the cars with their boiling hot brakes and sizzling tyres added so much. I qualified way back on the grid. The 997s definitely were quicker. I had two adrenalin packed races that weekend. At every bend I was amazed how that car gripped and came out fighting ready for the straights.

It was so exciting to be wheel-to-wheel with other cars racing on track. I did well and not only finished but won the 996 Class which put me 8th in the series overall.

Then Rockingham. The 996 suffered a serious crash on the testing day leaving me carless for the race. Team Parker Racing came to the rescue and provided me a 2008 997 Cup Car. But, wow, this was so very different from the 996. Flat shift sequential gearbox, non ABS brakes, Motec dash, better aero. So having just got my head partially around the 996 I’m now in a totally different, and much more competitive car. And what an amazing car! Maybe not a lot quicker on the straights but incomparible handling through the bends. No podium positions over the two races but I stayed in the points moving up to 7th overall.

Thruxton followed quickly and the 996 was still in the panel shop. I used Team Parker’s 997 again and had an amazing time. I had a great start in the first race and jumped from the back of the grid into 5th place.

Thruxton is such a fast track and has two really high speed bend sequences and I went off in both of them.

I had been rather aggressively running kerbs through the chicanes and didn’t realize that I had knocked the splitter off. It's incredible what that bit of plastic does.

As I got into ‘Noble’ I felt something wasn’t quite right.

I was doing about 120 mph and the front of the car just started to wash out across the track as I went on into ‘Goodwood’. By the time I was halfway through the bend I had two wheels on the grass and just knew that the other two would follow. And they did. Major spin.

Complete 360 but it brought me back onto the track and I only dropped one place. But, having not realised what the problem was, I repeated the whole process at ‘Church’. We fitted a new splitter for the second race and I had the most exciting drive of the season. I got past a few of the slower cars but then ended up on the tail of rather a fast one for loads of laps. I was sure I could get past but every time I made a move he closed the gap.

I was running on pure adrenalin for at least 20 minutes.

What an electrifying experience to be less than a metre away from another car doing over 160 mph and having to react so very quickly to whatever he did. It took 30 mins for my hands to stop shaking after the race! This was why I wanted to race a Cup Car.

Then came Croft, another new circuit and another car. The 996 was very sick and showed no hope of being ready so this time I ended up with Parr Motorsport and another lovely 997 car. This one was a 2007 car so a little less powerful but also lighter than the 2008 version. The first race was fairly uneventful but the second one got really exciting. I was doing really well and running 3rd when, suddenly, three laps from the end I lost my steering as I went round one of the right handers. I thought I had hit oil but it stayed really slippy for much longer than normal.

As I hit the next corner I was all over the place. I thought I had a puncture but then it seemed to get better. Two laps to go and still running third. I had to do it. As I started the last lap the Motec displayed a temperature alarm. My radiator had blown and pumped coolant all over my front left tyre. Great fun! I nursed the car around the last lap and got my podium finish. I came third on the day and moved up to 4th overall.

Donnington came and went without incident or accident and I hung onto 4th overall. I stayed with Parr and their 997.

The series finished in October with Silverstone. It was great to be a at Silverstone. It was the only track I had ever driven on before. Admittedly not in these cars but at least I had an idea of what it looked like.

I didnt do badly and improved my times quite dramatically from qualifying through both races.

I did some real personal bests but so did a lot of other people and I was toppled from fourth to fifth overall at the end of the season. I did still keep all my 996 points though so that did give me a second place for the year in that category.

Now the 2013 series is looming but it is going to be strange for me to be driving only one car, with only one team and on circuits that I have actually driven on before. I’m sure that it will come with a new series of challenges though.

In 1970, Porsche 917-021, one of the first batch of 917s, raced at Monza, Spa-Francorchamps, the Nürburgring, Le Mans, Hockenheim, Watkins Glen and Kyalami in the Endurance World Championship and the Interseries.

At the end of 2007, Vincent Gaye purchased 021 and decided to carry out a full restoration, which was completed in 2011.

The history and restoration of this very special Porsche is recorded in a beautiful new book, from which we are very pleased to share some photos.

Porsche 917-021: The Fabulous Story runs to over 300 pages and illustrates forty years in the history of one of the world’s greatest ever race cars. RIP Craig Moore, Thames Valley Regional Organiser Craig sadly passed away in February of this year. We felt it appropriate to collect some of the memories that his fellow TIPEC members posted on our web forum at www.tipec.net, both before and after his funeral.

Sean Smallman: Sadly I have to inform Thames Valley members that Craig Moore passed away in the early hours of Saturday 9th February whilst being cared for in a local Hospice.

Craig loved his Porches and in the few years I was priviliged to know him he had owned a 993, 911, 944 and a 968. Craig was an all-in sort of guy and was an enthusiastic RO, organising many activities for his region and sharing his ideas about the Club. He was a true enthusiast and will be fondly remembered by all those that knew him.

Our thoughts are with Sheila and Craig’s family. Rest In Peace Pal. sam: Terrible news, met him only once last summer, what a fab guy! what a loss!

My thoughts go to his family. ianjones: Gina has mentioned this on Facebook. A very sad loss of a very special person. I learned of his illness when I attended a TIPEC meeting late last year whilst in Maidenhead. Our thoughts go out to his family. tr7v8: Sad to hear, Craig will be missed.

Parked next to him at the first Hatton and tried to get his 911 started. RIP Craig, let’s hope there are Porsches in whatever place we go.

Paul Mabley: Craig was a tremendous guy, always enthusiastic and happy with a positive outlook even in his darkest times. I was amazed at how he wanted to do as much as he could in the time he had left, awesome.

I’ll remember all the great drives we had, the nights out and Christmas parties with him and Sheila. Thoughts are with Sheila and his family. Godspeed mate. racepicsuk: Sad news. I will miss him.

NXI20: I have some fantastic memories of taking Craig with me on several trips to the

Nurburgring and Spa. Always great company, full of enthusiasm; he always handled life’s ups and downs in the same cheerful and optimistic way.

We always used to joke that the only time I ever got pulled over at the Eurotunnel for an explosives check was when he was in the passenger seat—he said he must look like a terrorist, but a nicer, gentler man would be hard to imagine. Another standout memory is of him driving my GT3 for two laps of the ’ring on a damp track. I can’t recall ever seeing an adult behave quite so much like a child that Santa has just delivered a longed-for present to. Go and re-read his report of that trip in All Torque #90 to get a flavour of the man.

lindsayhbrown: Sad news indeed, only met Craig a couple of times and thought what a nice chap. RIP. ab54666: I didn't know Craig, but I’m sure I met him—was his 911 a Black Targa LHD? If so I went with my mate who ended up buying it. Very sad.

Tallguy: Yes, that was Craig’s car. ab54666: Very sad, must have been about 18 months to two years ago now and I think he was in one of the Porsche Mags a while back with his 968 that he got after the Targa, Seemed a stand up guy.

jasongibson: It’s very difficult to know what to say. I’ve been lucky enough to have known Craig for around six years now and in that time he became a very good friend.

It was me that persuaded him to become our region’s RO, well actually I asked him to take on my position as ARO, only to find out the same day that our RO had just resigned.

So with much trepidation Craig took on the position as RO as long as I agreed to stay on as ARO and help him out for a while. that was well over three years ago and Craig being RO is reason I’m still here now. Craig will be a great loss to us all and he will be sorely missed but never forgotten.

Tallguy: I remember my first visit to Thames Valley Region just after I bought my first Porsche which was a 968. Craig made me very welcome and introduced me to everyone.

I last saw him at an event back in the summer and despite his problems he was still cheerful and giving everything his unique blend of enthusiasm and humour. A true gentleman if ever there was one. The world in a poorer place without you Craig. You will be missed. Rest in peace.

R_D_Olivaw: I met Craig at the first Thames Valley meeting I attended. I found him to be a genuine guy and a great person to just sit down and have a chat with. RIP buddy.

PaulPSB: Sad news indeed. My last chat with Craig was at Le Mans. We were on the embankment at Tertre Rouge and he was watching the racing—beer in hand.

Sad loss for the club but of course far more to his family and close friends. Thoughts are with them.

Boxster-Al: Heard the sad news last Sunday and had been expecting this for a while.

I am glad to have known Craig. He was Thames Valley’s RO for the last few years and did a great job with lots of enthusiasm. Gina and I used to look forward to the monthly meets and the convivial atmosphere that Craig fostered. My fondest memories of Craig are from the 2011 Silverstone Classic watching the Group C cars circuiting in the dark with a huge grin on his face and also seeing the pleasure he got from driving his Porsche.

jasongibson: Well today was Craig’s funeral and he was given a worthy send off. A 20-plus convoy of Porsches from TIPEC and PCGB members followed the hearse to the church, including me in a 997, thanks for the loan Paul. It was a lovely service full of stories related to his love of cars.

All messages from the forum were passed on and his wife Sheila thanked everyone for their kind words. Craig was laid to rest in a suitably customized coffin. Rest in peace Big Man. Xstyle: RIP Craig. A legend of a man.

We met a handful of times last year when I bought my car, and Craig was the first forum person I met at the Novello, TV region, meet. In fact the first meeting I went to, I hadn’t bought my car at the time. Absolutely lovely guy. I knew he was ill and we met once after he had being diagnosed … I’ve been busy away from Porsches and this site, but it still hits you.

Sincere condolences to his family and friends, his memory will live on in our hearts and minds. I’ll dedicate my next (rare) drive of the Porsche to you, my friend. God bless you.

R_D_Olivaw: As Jason said, it was a lovely service and to be honest I found myself laughing in the church as the priest and one of Craig’s close friends/relatives read out the commendations. Although it was a sad

moment it gave everyone the chance to say their goodbyes and celebrate his life. In some ways it was Craig’s last club meet and I think he would have been happy with the turnout, not just because of all the lovely cars (944s, more 968s than I’ve ever seen in one place, Boxters, a GT3, 964s, 993s, 996s and 997s), but because of how well everyone got on.

We’re all the poorer without him, but we have the memories.

Paul Mabley: Unfortunately we were away last week when Craig’s funeral took place. I was absolutely gutted when I discovered that this was going to be the case and looked into options for flying back for the day but really ended up having to be sensible. I’m sure Craig would have thought I was a bit daft for considering this anyway! I said my goodbye’s to him in person a little while back though and have some fantastic memories from the last few years!

Luckily my good friend Jason agreed to take my 997 to the funeral so I felt at least I was there in spirit. Hopefully Craig would have appreciated it and chuckled at the car being there complete with dirt! Thanks Jason, I know it can’t have been easy taking someone else’s P&J out for the day! I did raise a glass at the time of the funeral to the old chap and had several glasses of Laphroaig Quarter Cask during the evening in his honour!

I believe the convoy was superb. I realise it’s not de-rigeur to take photos at a funeral but given that it was a celebration of Craig’s life and his interest in the cars I’m sure it was considered acceptable. Love the Porsche wrap on the coffin, presumably complete with wood interior!

Goodbye, Godspeed and rest in peace my friend. ianjones: Sorry I was unable to attend the funeral as well. It had been my intention to come up on my Harley. Craig always liked my bikes. I am sorry that in the end I wasn’t able to get back up to Berkshire but I was pleased to see he was given a good send off. Thank you everybody for the photos. dean1057: Very sad news about Craig. I was only thinking about him the other week and wondering how he was getting on. Our thoughts are with his family.

I remember the first time we met Craig and Shiela. They linked up with us at a Synn region WotY up the Lake District and being the super friendly guy Craig was he immediately gelled with all the group and we had a great weekend. Every time I met Craig he always had a big smile from ear to ear. He’ll be sadly missed among the Porsche fraternity. Just can’t believe he’s gone.

Following feedback from members regarding the Whipping Stocks as a venue, the C&S Committee have been looking for an alternative pub as a meeting point. A number of options have been under consideration, one of which is the newly refurbished Three Greyhounds Inn in Holmes Chapel Road, Allostock. (www.thethreegreyhoundsinn.co.uk).

By the time this edition of the magazine is published, a decision on a permanent move will have been made, also involving a change of evening from the THIRD TUESDAY of each month to the THIRD MONDAY of each month. Letters will be sent out to members in the region to confirm arrangements. If, for whatever reason you have not received one, please check with Steve Taylor or myself ahead of the April/May meetings.

Unfortunately the February visit to Pro9 in Halesowen was cancelled due to snow and then flooding of the access road. We have provisionally rescheduled the visit for Saturday 6th April, as listed below.

The Committee is also trying to organize a Weekend of the Year for the region with a trip to Specialist Cars of Malton during May combined with a run around Yorkshire taking in Scarborough and parts of the North York Moors National Park. Details will be issued by email, on the forum and sent out by post.

By the time you get the mag we will be gearing up the TIPEC Trackday at Blyton Park. We have about five NW members signed up but also some are going up to spectate. The first of the now world famous “Chippy Teas” will be almost upon us (Friday April 12th at Wheelans Lytham). I hope you can make it. Also we have been invited by Porsche Club Great Britain to join them for “Porsches on The Prom” at Llandudno.

This takes place on Sunday the 28th of April and interest is already gathering pace. Some of us are booked to stay on the Saturday night and are making a bit of a weekend of it. Llandudno is a lovely place and should be an impressive sight with the Prom full of Stuttgart’s finest. The hope is to get over 100 cars collectively. Have a think about it, it should be a cracking day out. We will finish with a bit of a drive back, possibly through the EVO Triangle. There will be more to report on next time so here is a rundown of what’s planned:

The 2013 Tipec season has now got underway for the North West region. We had a bit of a slow start as we had to reschedule our first outing. That visit to Finer Details will have taken place by the time you read this so a full report will appear in the next copy of AT.

April 7th (Sunday) TIPEC A.G.M.

I would like to welcome Simon Kendal, who joins Richard and me as our second ARO. Simon is very keen to help with the continuous building of our region and I’m sure I can count on your support for him as he steps into this role.

April 12th (Friday) First of the now nationally renowned Chippy Tea Runs of the season will be to Whelans in Lytham. Meet at The Boatyard at 6:30. A gentle run over to Lytham for a bit o’ tea and maybe a further run out afterwards.

We are moving to a new venue for our monthly meeting. We feel the Vault at the Dressers is becoming a little too small to accommodate everybody comfortably. As Richard has posted in our regional pages of the TIPEC website we have been having some very good attendances. Once again, our many thanks for that, it makes the effort worthwhile. From April we will be meeting at the Boatyard in Riley Green. This new venue is only ten minutes from the Dressers so will still be fairly local for everybody but the room, which will be exclusive to us each night, is a step up in size. It’s a comfortable room with a relaxed feel to it. Sofas and tub chairs create a bit of a living room ambience. I hope we can count on your continued support. Please note the new address above.

April 20th (Saturday) TIPEC Porsche only track-day at Blyton Park. Five NW region members are now booked onto this event - see the thread on the Club forum for more details or call Andy/Richard on the numbers above.

Early March then, saw our first club outing to the now famous RS Trackday at Oulton Park. As I had prior work engagements and was unable to attend I will hand you over to A.R.O. Richard Sholl for a full breakdown. He writes: “A convoy of nine Porsches on a very overcast Friday morning in March is a brilliant turnout for the first TIPEC NW run-out of the year. We had a 944 being sensibly driven by Colin (’cause his dad was in the car), two 997 Carrera Ss, a 991 Carrera S, a 996 Turbo S, a 987 S, a 987C S, a 993 Carrera and our ‘lead’ car was a 928 driven by Ian (and co-piloted by Julie) who kindly guided us to the circuit from the early morning muster point. Once at the circuit we met up with Terry and Ben from the Cheshire region who were happy to show off their 964 Carrera and its purple leather ... and Bob and Ben who’d travelled by BMW coupe. There were Porsches of all ages on track and all sorts of interesting cars to look at in the car park. The weather wasn’t brilliant, but that didn’t matter, and everyone enjoyed their day. I reckon we had a line-up of 10 Porsches and a turn-out of 19 TIPEC members/friends of the club in total. Thanks for coming folks.”

March As I write this, we have just had our monthly meeting and had a great slide show by Mike Marot, who won a holiday, ice driving in Finland. Looked cracking.

During January and February the TIPEC/SYNN calendar was being populated for 2013.

We have a visit to a detailing demonstration on 16th, which is usually an interesting day.

January We made the annual trip to the ‘Pistonheads’ show at Birmingham NEC. A terrific show with lots of things for us petrol-heads! We also visited Doncaster Airport for a guided tour around the Vulcan Bomber. This was preceded by a splendid lunch (which unfortunately

We have lots planned this coming year, including the TIPEC AGM and Blyton Park in April, The VW show in Stamford, the Prescott Hill Climb weekend and the European trip in May, the Wonderland Classic, Harewood House and NBO show in June. That’s only up to now! Phew!

April 27th (Saturday) Visit to Orchard View Classics garage in Kent For bacon rolls, a look at current projects and visitors’ cars. Previously there has been some serious machinery on display!

April 28th (Sunday) ACE Café show in Brighton An early start for a show place, so maybe an overnight social gathering for us? Peter and I are planning to combine the Saturday and Sunday south of the river and hope some of you can join in for one or both events. Expressions of interest asap please.

May 17–20th (Friday–Monday) There are still some places available for the visit to the Laon classic in North East France.

May 19th (Sunday) Stanborough Herts Auto Show near Welwyn Garden City. We have been invited to show up to 10 cars at this charity event, places on a first come basis.

Places are first come. All proceeds donated to the Make a Wish Foundation.

June 8th (Saturday) Letchworth Classic/Vintage car show at Halls Green June 9th (Sunday) Bromley Pageant A huge show at which we have committed to support a pitch of up to 15 NL&H cars for a display area adjacent to our friends in South East London, North Kent region. This is a great one day event of static displays, arena shows and trade market, that we would like to get as many R11 members to as possible. Reserve places with Vince.

The above diary list is in addition to our normal monthly meets and we hope R11 members will be able to join in in as many events as possible. Peter and I will be planning events for later in the year and will keep you informed as opportunities arise.

Peter led a visit to Porsche Hatfield for the launch of the new Cayman recently, here is his summary: “We attended the launch of the brilliant new Cayman at the Porsche Centre Hatfield recently, a very slick and polished event. Apart from the unveiling of various Cayman models, accompanied by informative videos, there were several famous ex-racing Porsches on display. Also BRDC rising star Daniel Lloyd was with his 911 GT3 Porsche Cup Racer, answering your questions. Champagne, Cocktails and Canapes were served throughout the evening. I’m looking forward to the next new Porsche already!”

The 1st Sunday in April clashes with the TIPEC AGM in Coventry, so Peter and I will not be in attendance, but feel free to show up as usual and browse the varied vintage, classics and customs on display, we’ll see you next time.

January and February have seen record numbers of members coming along to our monthly meetings at The Fox and our Skittles Night at our April meeting promises to be a really good fun evening. We have several new members and I am pleased to see them at meetings – it’s a lovely way to make a whole new bunch of friends. As the evenings start to get lighter, and the temperatures rise, more and more of our beloved cars are finding themselves back on the road and we’re all getting ready for some busy months of activity in what promises to be a great 20th Anniversary year for TIPEC as well as the 50th Anniversary year for the 911 – so lots of special events to look out for! The start of the year has seen us getting more involved with our local Porsche Dealership – Porsche Centre Bristol, and our members enjoyed a very interesting evening there on the night of the February meeting. The services they are offering to ‘enthusiast’ cars make it easier to get expert advice without breaking the bank – and a great learning experience will be available at the ‘Clinic’ on April 13th. Thanks to the team for their hospitality.

We are also really looking forward to the launch of the new Cayman – once again I am certain the dealership will lay on a great evening of hospitality – did someone mention a Martini Bar? April 14th (Sunday) Inter-Regional Go Karting We have 11 teams booked our next Inter-Regional Karting tournament including two teams from the SELNK region, three teams from Brighton and Hove Motor Club and six teams from the SE Region including the Flanagans “Crazy Gang” team who will be trying to retain their title. At the outdoor Campbell circuit at Filching Manor in Jevington, a few miles north of Eastbourne. The cost is £40 per person (£160 per team of four) for a two hour endurance race.

April 17th (Sunday) Open Day at Wheel Works, Crawley This is an opportunity for SE Region members to see the entire wheel refurbishment process including repairs, preparation and powder spraying and even have a go themselves.

April 28th (Sunday) Brighton InCarNation, 10:00 am–6:00pm ACE Cafe are holding their third annual InCarNation event at Brighton on Madeira Drive. Entry is free for all cars and car clubs but car clubs have to pre book for a 6m x 3m stand and specify the number of reserved parking spaces required.

Brighton InCarNation focuses on individuals who drive and their passions, and is open to all motor fans and enthusiasts from Classic cars, Street tuned racers through to hot exotic supercars. There are prizes and awards for Best Car Club and Best Club Display as well as spot prizes for best Motors.

There will be interactive stands, live entertainment on the ACE stage including girls and DJs from Ignition shows playing Garage, House, R & B, Drum & Bass etc.

May 5th (Sunday) Goodwood Breakfast Club Soft-top Sunday May 8th (Wednesday) Club Night May 17–20th (Friday–Monday) Weekend of the Year, East Kent This year a group of 16 SE Region members and their partners are visiting East Kent and have booked the White Cliff hotel in the picturesque village of St Margaret’s at Cliffe near St Margaret’s Bay, four miles east of Dover.

This is an ideal location for touring East Kent and visiting the many places of interest and attractions, such as Canterbury Cathedral, The Canterbury Tales and medieval City, Dover Castle and its amazing great tower and secret wartime tunnels museum, The National Trust’s South Foreland Lighthouse and White Cliffs visitor centre, Deal, Ramsgate, The Turner Contemporary Gallery at Margate, Herne Bay and the seafood capital of Whitstable.

Curry night at Ferndown January 31st saw sixteen Southern Regioners enjoying a very good meal at the Joy Indian Restaurant, Ferndown. We all sampled some very good food and, as usual, stimulating company.

This was a really nice evening, which I am sure will be repeated in the future.

February club night It was encouraging to see so many members attending at The Angel in February, for what was an important meeting including our AGM. The meeting commenced with Steve W passing on apologies from members who were unable to attend. Proceedings moved to the resignation of the committee, the unsuccessful appeal for a new RO, and the voting in of the previous committee, all the members of which were available for re-election. Steve quickly reported on the regions finances, which are in a healthy condition, and membership growth, up 14% since October. A generally pleasing state, the meeting went on to discuss our upcoming events for 2013.

Cheap and Cheerful Skittles Night (two) Our second Skittles night at The Three Legged Cross was held on the 21st February, it was gratifying to have 28 members and guests booking for this event, and although we had a couple of members unavoidably having to drop out, we had a very enjoyable evening, with some good scores being posted. We have an arrangement at the pub whereby they serve us a basket type meal, which all members greatly enjoyed, and was certainly very good value!

Congratulations to Arthur J who came third with 28 points, Alan B second with 30 points, only to be beaten with 31 points, by his son Simon, who I am sure has been putting in plenty of practice!
