National Garden Scheme Since 1927 the NGS been inviting garden owners to open their exceptional gardens to the public for good causes, giving people unique access to some of Britain’s most beautiful, memorable gardens for just the cost of a cup of tea and a slice of cake. Over the last 90 years, they've raised over £50 million for nursing charities across the UK, thanks to the warm generosity of garden owners, volunteers and visitors – a rich blend of generosity that lies at the heart of the National Garden Scheme. something to tell us?
In this edition we’ve put together a feature on festivals. We’ve kept it to five pages, although if we were to list every one taking place this year there would be no room for anything else in the magazine!
The Discover team has a monthly get-together to exchange ideas about what we are going to put into each of our magazines. Advertising will always be in of course – your support of the businesses is what pays for everything else.
It’s the small local events that are difficult for us to find though. So if you know of anything happening near where you live – a country fair, a village market, a local play type of thing – send in the details to editorial@discovermagazines. co.uk. That’ll make the magazine interesting and useful for the recipients and – let’s be honest – make my life just a little bit easier!
We’ve always included a what’s on and anything else we think of that’s interesting. It’s the one thing that searching on the internet isn’t very good for. Suppose you’re thinking ‘weather’s nice tomorrow, what shall we do’. You can search for it, but it’ll be site after site, page after page – there’s no one place that collates it all. So as it’s nearly summer and there are hundreds of activities and event available, we are proverbially making hay, and have decided to
Thank you. Thanks to festival ‘Secret Garden Party’, and photographer Max Miechowski for our beautiful cover this month. See page 37 for more details.

News from Chandlers Ford & Winchester MP Steve Brine Regular followers will know of my long-standing interest - as a constituency MP - in rail services for our area. So it was big news last month when Ministers announced a coalition led by FirstGroup will take over the contract to operate the South Western rail franchise, from Stagecoach/South West Trains, this August. The group will invest some £1.2bn over the period of the franchise which runs until at least 2024. Their undertaking to increase capacity in new spacious carriages, deliver wi-fi (that actually works), to offer a flexible season ticket policy and new lower fares for 16-18 year olds are really exciting. My rail site sits at www.stevebrine.com/ trains
Thank you to the many constituents from Chandler’s Ford who got in touch after the terrifying events in Westminster on 22nd March. I was in the Chamber at the time taking the Pension Schemes Bill through its final stages as part of my Ministerial work at the DWP. We were actually voting when the rampage begun but it quickly became clear hundreds of MPs were not there.
me speaking to students from King’s School in Winchester who were actually with me in Parliament on the day of the recent terror attacks.
As we’re now aware, our attacker acted alone but we didn’t know that at the time and a full lockdown of the Commons chamber – with heavily armed close protection officers on every door – followed.
For me it was a horrible reminder that an open, accessible Parliament can never be 100% safe and, in any event, we cannot beat this kind of twisted hatred with force alone. All our love and prayers remain with the family of PC Palmer and the others who lost their lives that day in March.
As I said on my Facebook page late that night as I left the Commons, “today darkness had a victory today but tomorrow the light will flow back in”. And it did. Finally, you can find more about my other work, in Winchester and of course in Westminster, via my website which includes my regularly updated Brexit mini-site at www.stevebrine.com/brexit
Are You a Star Gazer? Outdoor nature hobbies are becoming more and more popular, including astronomy. Even if you live in a densely populated, light-polluted area, there’s more to see up there than you might imagine. Just north of Southampton, in the quiet village of Toothill, stands one of the finest observatories in Hampshire. Owned and run by Solent Amateur Astronomers, it houses a 14” Meade and numerous smaller telescopes. The public are welcome at the next open door event on the evenings of the 2 and 3 June at 9:30pm (adults £2). The club also hosts a programme of talks at Oasis Academy in Lordshill. Interested? WILDLIFE TRUST BEGINS WORK The first Wildlife Trust cows and sheep are making themselves at home at Hockley Meadows Farm, after the local charity successfully completed on the purchase of the Twyford land.
A fundraising appeal to help meet the purchase price exceeded its target, with days to go before the deadline. Now on site, Trust is using the land to support the traditional wildlife-friendly farming methods that have shaped the Itchen Valley’s water meadows. Key to this is the use of traditional breeds of cattle to lightly graze the land - a widely-used land management practice for maintaining water meadow habitats and ensuring the greatest diversity of plants and other wildlife.
As well as running a working wildlife-friendly farm, the Wildlife Trust will also manage the surrounding floodplain meadows as a vital wildlife

British White cattle grazing at St Catherine's Hill habitat. This includes the northern-most meadow at the farm, which is designated as part of the Itchen Valley SSSI for its wildlife value.
Debbie Tann, Chief Executive at Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust said: “Being able to move onto the site is a momentous occasion for us and I would just like to again thank the 1600 people whose kind donations made this happen. Some of our British White cattle will be making the meadows their home this week, and later in the spring we will be using the farm for lambing.” www.hiwwt.org.uk.

outdoor relaxation When you get back from a hard day’s work, or when you simply find the time to escape into the garden after a stressful day, then it is essential that you are met by a soothing environment. So, concentrate on a truly relaxing feel that will help you to unwind as you enjoy soft shades and textures of foliage, delicate flower colours and fabulous perfumes. Plants have an amazing ability to calm and soothe even the most wound up, stressed out mood, but what should you grow if you really want to create that perfect place to relax?
Start by considering a fairly gentle perfume, like that produced by many roses. One of my favourites is ‘Felicia’. For something slightly richer try ‘Tuscany Superb’.

If you have space for a good-sized container plant, then grow your own Datura or Brugmansia. Commonly known as the angel’s trumpet, these plants produce large elegant trumpet-shaped flowers with a wonderful perfume. Think too of plants with a relaxing feel to them, such as the grass Chasmanthium latifolium which grows to a height of about 45 cm and carries its flattened seed heads above the leaves. They move about delicately in the breeze and are almost impossible not to stroke. Artemisia abrotanum has soft grey-green leaves

that will make you want to touch it, which releases a lovely aroma. The perfume of lavender is often used in aromatherapy because of its calming, soothing properties, so grow this in a sunny spot with freedraining soil, perhaps to edge a border. It not only has lovely, slightly furry or felt-like foliage but also produces that heavenly smell. Grasses and bamboos work well too; the rustling sound of bamboo foliage as the stems sway gently is one of the most relaxing sounds I know,

and for smaller spaces many of the grasses form wonderfully rounded and quite irresistible clumps of foliage. When it comes to choosing flowers, if you want to relax then concentrate on cream, white and, of course, the pastel shades. Green is known to be a relaxing colour too, so include plenty of plants with good foliage, and, in shady areas, a miniature grotto-like patch planted up with ferns is wonderful.
And finally, before you rush off to the garden centre to buy some of these truly magical ingredients, just a reminder that water in a garden always helps to relax you. Whether it’s a small pond or perhaps a bubble fountain, position it where you can hear that sound of moving water or enjoy watching the wildlife as it comes to feed and drink - and before you know it, you will find that you want to move the whole of your life into your garden.

WANTED!
Distributors for this magazine The Discover Chandlers Ford magazine is delivered every month by our reliable team of distributors. Although many distributors stay with us for years, teens grow up and adults grow older, meaning that we do regularly have vacancies in the area. We deliver throughout Chandlers Ford, but also in Otterbourne, Hursley and Boyatt Wood.
Flexible work The beauty of this job is that we aren’t asking you to commit to a regular day, nor do we expect you to go out in unsociable hours. All we need is for you to be available once a month (or possibly once every other month) for a few hours, and we give you 5 days to do the delivery. 20
Close to home We try to find a route close to home for you if we can, but if you are an adult we will pay mileage if we ask you to travel more than a mile.
Rates of pay It depends on the route as some are easier than others. But for aged 13-16 (who usually get the easier routes) it’s a minimum of £5.50 per hundred magazines. For adults it’s a minimum of £6.75 a hundred, then there’s a bit extra for including leaflets. It should take around 45 to 60 minutes to deliver 100 magazines, but less time in some areas. How to apply Go to discovermagazines.co.uk/deliveryteam to complete your details and to find out more information

Home Interiors
a home with character There’s more to interior style than eye-catching accessories. Consider introducing an appealing sense of charm and character with these interesting ideas. Is your home lacking in an indefinable something? Has it lost its period features? Would it benefit from some appealing detailing, the restoration of authenticity or some aids to functionality? Sometimes it is worth considering some more architectural alterations, which don’t necessarily have to cost a fortune. Here are a few suggestions. Improve your floors If you have original timber boards in good condition beneath your floor coverings, then sanding them back, staining and/or oiling them is a relatively straightforward procedure for a competent DIYer; alternatively, employ a professional. Boards in poor condition can be renovated to an extent, or consider replacing them with reclaimed boards that match the style of your home. Homes built between the late 19th century and the middle of the 20th often feature colourful, patterned geometric or encaustic tiles, generally along the hallway and garden path. Even if they are discoloured or damaged they should be repairable, and with the right specialist the results will be dramatic. Think about mouldings From skirting to ceiling roses, door surrounds to dados, mouldings contribute enormously to the overall look of a home. Research carefully, to ensure they correspond in scale and design to the 22

age and style of your architecture. Modern replicas are often available, but sometimes going to a specialist is necessary and this is not cheap. Ease of alteration depends on your circumstances but this is definitely a project to bear in mind when considering renovation work. What about woodwork? In living rooms lacking storage, build across the recesses either side of the fireplace, with cupboards below and display shelving above. The same goes for alcove shelving elsewhere, window seats, wardrobes and other forms of built-in joinery. Consider these additions carefully, so that they complement your home in terms of scale and detailing. And, plan to remove and replace completely inappropriate built-in storage or seating when possible.
Replacing poor quality or badly designed interior doors with beautiful ones is a major enhancement. In a period home you might seek out reclaimed
examples or find well-made reproductions; also, decide whether to paint them or, conversely, strip them.
Panelling can enhance a room or hallway and comes in a wide variety of styles, from Jacobean to contemporary, and is relatively easy to fit. Get the lighting right You can improve inadequate or imbalanced built in lighting or out of character fittings: either discreetly with minimal downlighters in the ceiling, simple wall lights or versatile LED strips - or go for full-on drama with huge, eye-catching chandeliers. All in the details Small details like cupboard knobs, door and window furniture, light switches, plug sockets and even the humble pull cord can all make a difference. Cheap plastic light switches can be swapped for upmarket ones which are lovely to look at and pleasant to touch. The same goes for door and window furniture: think, for example, how different your front door would look with a gorgeous, matching set of By Katherine Sorrell letterbox, bell and numbers.

I LOVE GIN. And apparently, I’m not the only one... Fetch the ice and tonic – the gin industry in the UK is indeed booming, with 49 distilleries opening in 2016 alone, and £400 million spent on buying gin bottles. The trend for small batch gin is still on the increase this year with new gin lists popping up in restaurants, pubs and bars all over the county, Winchester leading the way of course! But do you know which gin you actually prefer? And why? The Hampshire Wine School offers an education, in a fun and relaxed way at the Winchester Wessex Hotel, on how gin is created, and how to make THE perfect Gin & Tonic by comparing 5 styles of gin, 3 premium tonics and 5 types of botanicals. A real mouth-watering and eyeopening experience for £32.50pp. Do not miss out on Winchester’s forthcoming House of Gin Festival either, which is returning to Winchester GuildHall on Saturday 27th May, 5pm-10pm, in association with Winchester Distillery and East Imperial tonic and mixers. The Festival will have three Gin bars showcasing a wide selection of small batch and Award Winning Gins. Producers shall also run masterclasses on how their gin is distilled, offer tastings and an opportunity to purchase bottles at a discounted rate. Copperhead Gin, Nordes gin, Marylebone Gin, Liverpool Gin,
Learn about wine, champagne, beer, gin and whisky as well as food & wine pairings in a fun way, with likeminded people, in a relaxed atmosphere 26
Nginiuos Gin, Brennen & Brown Gin, 6 o’clock Gin, Burleighs Gin and Elephant Gin to name a few will be presented on the day. Tickets on sale for £8.03 at EventBrite.co.uk. My favourite gin of the moment is Pinkster Gin, as it makes a refreshingly different G&T, with a delicate raspberry flavour appealing both to seasoned gin drinkers and recent converts. It even won ‘Overall Best Contemporary Gin’ at The Gin Guide Awards 2017! So, how about this wonderful ‘Je T’Aime’ pink cocktail for the one you love. … • 37.5ml Pinkster Gin
• 15ml Chambord liqueur (or raspberry equivalent) • 50ml Pineapple juice
Shake hard to create the foam layer and double strain in Martini glass. Float raspberries on top. Enjoy!

Discovering Britain: the Shell Heritage Art Collection
Bringing the Heart of Your Home into Your Home Quality
. Convenience . Choice . Service
Wouldn’t it be just perfect if you could relax at home and choose your dream kitchen without the hassle and pressures of high street shops and sales people. Edna Clarke Hall - Lavenham, courtesy of the Shell Heritage Art Collection
Iconic images of the British landscape, including some local scenes, go on show at the National Trust’s Mottisfont House this later this year.
Invoking a spirit of escape and adventure, posters commissioned by Shell from the 1920s – 1950s featured historic landmarks and inspiring scenes of British countryside, brought vividly to life by artists such as Paul Nash, Graham Sutherland, Rex Whistler and Vanessa Bell. The Shell Heritage Art Collection is one of the most important collections of commercial art in Britain, spanning years of advertising campaigns. Mottisfont’s exhibition focuses on the early twentieth-century period, when Shell’s advertising was driven by ideas of travel and discovery, featuring the slogans ‘See Britain First’ and ‘Visit Britain’s Landmarks’. Exquisite artwork depicting quirky and interesting places encouraged drivers to get on the road and explore the British Isles. Other material commissioned by Shell, including wall charts, film and travel guides, will also be on show. This is a new and unique exhibition, on loan from the Shell Heritage Art Collection based at the National Motor Museum, Beaulieu. The exhibition will take place between the 6th May and 2nd July. 28

Three Types Of Food That Are Poisonous To Your Dog If your dog has ever ingested a poisonous substance, you’ll know the sudden and devastating effect it can have on their health. Unfortunately, three commonly used foods regularly cause serious issues for dogs, often requiring emergency treatment by a vet. Chocolate Chocolate contains a poisonous substance called theobromine, which is derived from the cocoa plant. Amongst other symptoms it can cause severe vomiting, diarrhoea, high temperature, irregular heart rhythm, and fitting. Dark chocolate contains more theobromine than milk or white chocolate, and it is not unusual for a dog to need veterinary intervention even when a small amount has been consumed. these foods can cause anaemia in dogs and are poisonous both in their raw and cooked form even something as innocuous as onion gravy can cause a severe reaction in some dogs. They contain organosulphides which attack the red blood cells over a period of time. After a few days you might notice your dog has an upset stomach, is lethargic, sleepy, or breathing rapidly. Grapes, raisins, currants and sultanas These can all be fatal to your dog, although the dried versions are believed to be more toxic. Some dogs are able to eat these foods with no ill-effects, but others experience serious illness over a period of several days, with vomiting and diarrhoea, and in some cases kidney failure a few days after ingestion. https://www.pdsa.org.uk/taking-careof-your-pet/poisons-and-hazards http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/ media/605397/poisons.pdf

RHUBARB and Almond tart
Ready in 1 hour 30 minutes plus chilling time
A delicious tart with a layer of tangy roasted rhubarb topped with a sweet almond frangipane. Serve warm or cold with crème fraiche or vanilla ice cream. • Flour, for dusting • 300g ready-made shortcrust pastry • 250g rhubarb, trimmed and chopped • 175g caster sugar • 3 tbsp orange juice • 150g unsalted butter, melted • 125g ground almonds • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract • 2 medium eggs, beaten • Icing sugar, for dusting 32
1. Preheat the oven to 200C/Fan 180C/Gas Mark 6. Lightly
dust a work surface with flour and roll out the pastry to about 3mm thickness. Use to line a 23cm loose-based fluted flan tin. Chill in the fridge for 30 minutes.
2. Meanwhile, place the rhubarb, 25g of the caster sugar and the orange juice in a shallow roasting tin. Roast in the preheated oven for about 20 minutes until just tender, turning once. Leave to cool.
3. Trim off the excess pastry from around the edge of the chilled
pastry case and prick the base all over with a fork. Line the case with baking paper and baking beans and bake blind for 10 minutes. Remove the beans and lining and bake for a further 5 minutes until pale golden.
4. Strain the rhubarb from the roasting juices and spoon into the pastry case. Beat together the melted butter, remaining caster sugar, ground almonds, vanilla extract and eggs in a bowl until smooth and creamy. Gently spread over the rhubarb.
5. Bake the tart for 30-35 minutes until the topping is golden and just set. Serve warm or cold dusted with icing sugar. See tip for serving suggestion.

The UK Festival Scene
(For everyone who thinks they are a bit old for that sort of thing…)
By Tania Houston The music scene is a vibrant and important part of UK culture, and the summer festival season is the exciting showcase for the best of our new and established artists. If you’ve never been to a festival however, you might think that what you’ve seen of Glastonbury epitomises the reason you don’t go: lots of mud and a huge drunk crowd of mostly twenty-somethings. Let me enlighten you! I am – shall we say - a ‘more mature’ music fan and I promise you that there is something on offer for almost every age, music taste and budget. There are festivals for party animals and for families; for teens and baby boomers; for day trippers and weekenders; in other words, for anyone that likes the idea of having fun with a bit of music involved. These pages give you some help with where to start and a more information about some of the ones I know a bit about.
How do I choose?
The Who at the Isle of Wight Festival, © Dylan Roberts
There are several things to consider when planning your summer festival diary. Most of the events could be said to be suitable for anyone. Very few don’t accept children. But try to find out who the organisers are really targeting and match yourself with those. 1 You have a tight budget. Aim for the one-day only gigs, and make the most of anything free or very low cost and local. Look at: Beggars Fair, Alresford Festival 2 You have young children. Does the website say children are ‘accepted’ or ‘welcomed’ – there’s a world of difference. Look at: Camp Bestival, Victorious
3 You have tweenagers/ teenagers. They need keeping an eye on, but they want to spend the time with their friends, not you. Day events are ideal for this as it gives them a bit of freedom, but stops it getting out of hand. Look at: Common People, Victorious. 4 You are over 40, child-free and want Radio 2/Breeze FM type music. The retro festivals are best for you. Look at: Wickham Festival, Let’s Rock and some of the artists at the Isle of Wight Festival.
5 You are an adult with no ties and really into music and/ or fun and dancing. Aim for something meant for grownups and chart watchers. Look at: Common People, Reading Festival. 6 You are an adult with no ties and want a full entertainment program e.g. talks and activity. Plenty on offer and we’d recommend Blissfields (local), Cornbury and Secret Garden Party.

A weekend Away On your doorstep is great, but it doesn’t feel like a holiday if you can nip back home at a moment’s notice. What’s needed is bit of distance (but not too much) and definitely a complete change of scene. From June to August, these ones will cram as much into three days as a fortnight in Magaluf. Secret Garden Party 20-23 July, Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire
Credit: Louise Roberts Wildfire Adventure Camp 16-17-18 June somewhere in Kent Wildfire is the place to go to bring out your inner Bear Grylls. Billed as Half Adventure Camp, Half Music Festival, this is two days/ three nights of activities and music. There is some extreme stuff in there – Zorbing, obstacle course, sword skills – but also wood whittling, macramé, and fire lighting amongst the 80 activities on offer. It’s adults only, so you really won’t be running around unless you want to and – bliss mobile phones are discouraged. Winner of Best New Festival and Best Small Festival, it’ll be a memory making weekend. www.campwildfire.co.uk

Whilst this is very much a music festival, it is equally a huge weekend outdoor party. Some really exciting musicians, side shows, talks, fancy dress, fireworks and more, you will have just the best time ever. It has been announced this will be the last time it runs having been around for 13 years so I guess all good things…, but ‘SGP’ fans are determined to make a truly memorable sendoff. This is a great example of a ‘don’t think you are too old’ type of event. Yes, there will be more under 40s than over, but the relaxed environment means that anyone, young/old, slim/fat, straight/gay, normal or a bit quirky is equally welcome. For a break from the big, bad world, it’s just 3 hours’ journey to pure Credit: Max Miechowski hedonism. www.secretgardenparty.com
Wilderness Festival 3-6 August, Cornbury Park, Oxfordshire Into August and school holidays, so a festival that truly offers something for everyone. Not every family is universally into the same music, or indeed into music at all. Wilderness offers a grand buffet of activities, where even the hardest to please will admit they had fun. Music – Grace Jones and Two Door Cinema Club for starters. Talks, poetry, debate, theatre, games, workshops, outdoor activity, wellbeing and dining experiences. Topped off with plenty of entertainment for children (because if they aren’t enjoying it, neither are you). www.wildernessfestival.com
on the doorstep So maybe you like the idea, but just don’t want to commit yourself to spending a lot of time at one or blowing the budget just trying the idea out. Victorious 25-27 Aug, Southsea
Let’s Rock 8-9 July, Southampton
Alresford Festival 8 July, Alresford
A retro festival, so if you are of the right age, you will have grown up with these acts. There’s just one stage at the front, but the day is as much about the socialising as it is about the music. Because everyone knows the lyrics, people singing and dancing at their ‘base’ is the norm, and that base is picnic blankets, chairs, picnics and plenty to drink. Headliners include Tony Hadley (ex Spandau Ballet).
Family friendly, several stages and – because it’s for charity – bargain tickets. You won’t know most of the bands, but that doesn’t mean there’s a lack of talent. Several stages, bouncy castles and camping on the Saturday night if you want it, or the option of a bus to and from Winchester station.
Victorious is unique in its truly universal appeal. It has a dedicated entertainment area for children, Rita Ora and Olly Murs for the teens and Madness and Stereophonics for the ‘non-teens’. Being a flat site it’s good for parents with buggies and elderly or disabled. And with bargain price day tickets (adults £30, age 5-15 £8) and a good train service to Southsea, well what’s not to like? victoriousfestival.co.uk
Two big ones There are two big all weekenders in this area which need a budget and some stamina to attend. Blissfields 6-8 July, Winchester
Boomtown 10-13 August, Winchester
Several of the Discover team went to this one last year and loved it. Blissfields has become a little gem on the festival circuit and whilst it’s never going to be a Reading, Glastonbury or Isle of Wight sized event, it has pulled loads of established names in the past such as Bastille and Mumford and Sons. An illicit journey to the Hidden Hedge at night – a party in its own right - is a must to sample the bohemian delights of fire dancers, acrobats and trapeze artists. A wonderful festival experience on a smaller scale. blissfields,co.uk
Talking of stamina, Boomtown is built around Winchester’s Matterley Bowl so bear in mind there’s a very steep hill to negotiate several times a day. This one certainly has plenty of music, but that’s not really what it’s about. Rather it’s ‘theatre’ with amazing temporary cities across the site including The Wild West, Trenchtown and China Town. The days are fairly quiet but at night Boomtown comes alive. boomtown.co.uk.

bigger festivals If what interests you is the big name chart artists - either have been, are or will be - then these are the ones to go to all within around an hour’s drive. Many will have camping, including motorhomes, and late night entertainment too. Typically these events are better for adults, but Camp Bestival is a definite exception, being very family focused.

And Another Thing...
Tom and the pub quiz
by Tom Hughes
8 pm and, like a whippet detecting a downwind hare, Sarah (my Dearly Beloved) lifted her chin and flared her nostrils. “Tom, what’s that you’re wearing?”
“This old thing? I’ve had it ages - mind you, it matches my eyes beautifully don’t you think?” “Not the shirt, that aftershave.”
“I think it’s Warrior by Captain Spice.”
“Listen here Don Juan, don’t get any ideas about making moon eyes at the new barmaid down the Old Paraffin Lamp.”
“No, no. Team Nigel, I insist,” beamed Sarah.
Smarmy Nigel was getting on my wick. “Listen, never mind the name - who’s going to the bar?”
“White wine for Sarah and I’ll have a pint please, Tom.”
Defeated, I trudged forlornly to the bar. Slouching over the worn mahogany I waited for the elegant curves of our new barmaid to appear. But Fat Frank waddled into view, wiping his hands on a towel. “What’ll you have Tom?”
“How did you know about - listen, she’s - I’m not - err.”
I flicked my eyes around Frank’s considerable girth. “Where’s Diane?”
“It’s the pub quiz. Me and Nigel are having a stab at the jackpot. And it’s a roll over - seventy quid!”
“That Frank, is my wife.”
“Tom, stop stuttering.”
“Well if you hang on a moment I’ll come with you. Three heads are better than two.”
Resistance being useless, I acquiesced, knowing that Nigel would be pleased, carrying as he did the tiniest of torches for my betrothed. “Sarah! What a lovely surprise! Sit yourself down here next to me.” Nigel’s gushing immediately raising my hackles as Sarah coquettishly played with her hair and plonked down next to him. “Now, here is our answer paper, here’s a little pen.” “Nigel, she’s not six.”
“You leave Nigel alone, he’s only being kind. Now, what are we going to call ourselves?” 44
“How about Team Sarah?” beamed Nigel.
“Oh it’s her night off. Hey, who’s that on your table giggling at Nigel’s jokes?” “Punching above our weight are we, Thomas?”
Ignoring the boorish comment, I returned laden with refreshments and settled down for the contest. Quizmaster Barry, in his annoying nasal whine, began with his pre-quiz announcements. “Now everyone - no Googling - phones away please. Right, off we go. Question one - in what year did women get the vote?”
Triumphantly, I grabbed the paper and scrawled down the answer. My other two teammates peered down at the date. There then ensued a bun fight that would have embarrassed Jeremy Paxman. Dates and events flew around the table as The Bellringers on table three (pens down, arms
folded) sat smugly, nursing their drinks. On went the questions (and the arguments) until eventually the quiz ended and we all swapped papers. The Bellringers had our question paper. I glared over as they gurned and squinted at our scribblings, as though they were unreadable. Barry read out the answers. “Question one. Women got the vote in…1928.”
Sarah glared at me. “I told you Nigel was right!”
Shamefully I buried my face into my pint. Then Barry collated the scores and announced, “We have a draw! Team Sarah and the Bellringers are both on 42 points. Can the captains come up for the tie breaker?”
Victorious, I beamed over at our table. Then, catastrophe - Barry handed over the money to the Bellringers. “What are you doing?” “They’ve won. Six is the correct answer.” Incandescent, I protested. But Barry was not for moving. Closing his eyes he said, “Pugh, Pugh, Barney McGrew, Cuthbert, Dibble, Grub. Six. Sorry Tom. You lost.”
Sarah was unimpressed. “Well, if you’d been a little better clued up about women’s suffrage instead of women’s bodies - or Trumpton Firemen for that matter - we would now be £73.50 to the good.” Sometimes life (and quizzes) can be so unfair. (And it is seven - Google it).
My mind desperately flashed back to my youth.
Accountants
My opponent yelled, “Six.”
Burning with injustice I got in Barry’s face and hissed. “And Captain Flack is SEVEN!” Barry reddened and, mumbling something about the rules, scuttled away.
Without any consultation I marched up to Barry, to be joined by my rival. Like two prize fighters, we stared each other out. The room fell silent. I felt my heartbeat thumping in my ears. “OK, first to answer wins the jackpot. In the children’s TV programme Trumpton, how many firemen were there?”
Accord
“Seven!” I shouted.

Victory for Charities, but is your Will ‘watertight’? In an epic legal battle that has lasted a decade, three charities have won a final showdown at the Supreme Court and walked away with their intended share of an individual’s estate. So has this strengthened the respect for wishes of the deceased? Head of Wills, Trusts & Succession, Emily Taylor investigates. The high profile saga of Ilott vs Miston arose out of a claim for reasonable provision under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependents) Act which was brought against the estate of Mrs Melita Jackson by her daughter, Mrs Heather Ilott, who had been estranged from her mother for 26 years before her death. When Mrs Jackson passed away in 2004 she left her Will with a letter that had been written two years previously, explaining why she had disinherited her daughter and how she preferred to leave almost all of her estate to The Blue Cross, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA). Mrs Ilott successfully challenged the Will at the High Court in 2007 and was awarded £50,000 on the basis she had been ‘unreasonably excluded’ from the Will. However, when she continued to argue for a larger share, the judge reversed the decision and left her with nothing. In 2011, The Court of Appeal overruled the judge’s decision and said Mrs Ilott was entitled to a share of the money, so three years later, she returned to the High Court to resume her argument for a larger amount. Once again, she was refused. Undeterred,
Mrs Ilott returned to the Court of Appeal in 2015 and, since she had no pension and was living on state benefits, she was awarded up to £164,000 to purchase her housing association property and supplement her income from the state. At this point, the charities decided to step in and this month won their Supreme Court challenge, resulting in Mrs Ilott’s sum being reduced to the original £50,000. What I found interesting were the factors that the Court took into account. One was the provision of financial maintenance for an individual other than a spouse or partner - the level should neither be limited to basic subsistence, nor extended to whatever the claimant wants. The judge also stated a long period of estrangement was something that had to be acknowledged and the Courts needed to consider both the wishes of the Testator, and the impact an award will have upon the claimant’s receipt of benefits. The case is a prime example for why a Will need to be ‘watertight’. There are an increasing number of cases where people wish to exclude potential beneficiaries from their Will and others wish to challenge that decision. We at Eric Robinson Solicitors have a great deal of experience in such matters. We can provide the legal expertise and advice needed to predict and protect against the likelihood of an unwanted claim against a deceased person’s estate, and also offer a fixed fee advice hour for anyone in dispute or considering making a claim.

Going Dutch for Charity Chandlers Ford resident Ed Pearce will be cycling from London to Amsterdam in May to raise funds for Marie Curie. Three local businesses have kindly sponsored his cycling jersey to show their support and generosity for their community and for Marie Curie. They are Sparks Ellison, Ventura Kitchens, and 5past7 Tailoring. Ed told us “I am very grateful to these wonderful local companies for showing their community spirit and support for Marie Curie. I am proud to be wearing their logos.” In 2014 Ed cycled from London to Paris for Macmillan and raised over £3,400. Ed’s family have sadly been affected by cancer and realise how charities such as Macmillan and Marie Curie provide an incredible service to those with cancer and terminal illnesses. Ed says “thanks to these wonderful charities, families and those affected can be given much needed support at a time when
their world has been turned upside down”. All the money raise from Ed’s ride will help Marie Curie Nurses to provide more free care to people with terminal illnesses in their own homes or at one of the charity’s hospices. To follow Ed’s journey, to read his story or donate, please visit www.justgiving.com/London2Amsterdam2017.

BMW M760Li xDrive Those of you hoping this was BMW’s M7 need to look away now. Although this may be the fastest BMW ever made, if you’re after a fire-breathing, full-blooded M car, the M760Li will leave you a little disappointed. BMW says that’s because this is a car for buyers with something of a split personality. One moment they may be keen on a country road assault so they can enjoy the glorious V12, the next they might want to kick back and relax in the massaging seats and just cruise along. Looks and image
The 7 Series has long been a luxury choice for the type of buyer who still enjoys driving, though – and the M760Li is the epitome of that. With several driving modes to choose from, sporty drivers are well catered for when its sport setting is active. With the comfort setting it’s mellower, more relaxed, it eases over bumps and floats along beautifully. The looks of the M760Li won’t be for everyone but inside is a wonderful place to spend time. For those who are chauffeured the back seats are arguably more comfortable than up front. There are multimedia screens to enjoy, cushioned headrests and massaging, reclining seat backs. 64
Space and practicality
The 7 Series does feel a little smaller in the rear than rivals from Mercedes and Audi, though. Up front the driving position is a little cosseting too, but it’s easy to get comfortable.
What’s under the bonnet?
BMW made a lot of noise about it being 30 years since they installed a V12 engine in their 7 Series at the launch. Since then, the 12-cylinder lump has doubled in power: the 2017 6.6-litre unit boasts a whopping 601bhp, a staggering 800Nm of torque and is capable of propelling it to 60mph in just 3.6 seconds. That gives it the impressive title of the fastest accelerating BMW ever made, but you’ll pay at the pumps; the M760Li will return 22.1mpg and emits 294g/km.
Behind the wheel
The BMW is a true Jekyll and Hyde car with distinct personalities behind the wheel. On the track it was incredibly swift and that V12 makes a pleasingly sound and, while there may be some body roll, it’s not too intrusive. It’s all helped by four-wheel drive that has a rear wheel drive bias when needed. The steering is a little light in the comfort setting, though, but flick it into sport and it’s far better.
Value for money
For £132,310, you do get some goodies thrown in. Lightweight 20-inch alloys, a Bowers & Wilkins sound system and Car Play are included, as is an Advanced Parking System, adaptive LED headlights, a head-up display, and massaging seats. There’s even rear-seat entertainment and a panoramic glass sunroof provided too. There’s also an extensive options list, including night vision and BMW laser headlights.
Verdict
The fact BMW perseveres with a V12 is a

revelation. With downsizing the current buzzword, it seems hard to believe that a manufacturer would launch a 6.6-litre petrol drinking lump. Although the market for it will be small, we’re still very glad it has. OK, so this might not be the M7 that many performance BMW fans crave, but it’s as close to it as we’re going to get. It’s great fun to drive, sumptuously luxurious and wonderfully relaxing when you want it to be - and all in, a very competent and exciting 7 Series indeed.

Are You A Car or a Motorbike? Whether by neglect, a careless attitude or financial constraints, in the longer nights of the winter months I noticed quite a few cars with only one working headlamp or rear light. I’ve not made an in-depth investigation into the state of UK car servicing, but I have good hearsay evidence from dealer’s service departments that more than a few cars are coming into them way past their service interval dates and with a lot of niggling faults on them too, of which failed headlamps are one. Whether this is down to owners being so financially stretched they are delaying paying service charges, or not bothering to check their cars are working 100% or, if they
do, finding such faults doesn’t worry them, I do not know.
But when it comes to external lights they should bother. It’s an offence not to have working lights, and for obvious reasons. I know changing lamps on modern cars is an utter pain, I’ve had personal experience of taking half the engine out just to get to the back of a headlight, but that’s not an excuse not to change it as soon as you know it’s faulty. Only having one headlight means you could miss that child stepping into the road, and the consequence of no brake-lights needs no explanation.
For us drivers, on meeting your single-lamped car on a dark night our first reaction is that you are a motorbike, so we can prepare to overtake you accordingly - until our lights pick out the rest of your ill-illuminated bodywork. And by then, to take avoiding action may be too late.

Hobbies
Ten tips to bring your treasures back to life By Kate McLelland In the 1980s I used to live near London’s famous Portobello Market, and every Saturday I would get up bright and early in order to trawl the bric-a-brac stalls, looking for things I could restore and sell. My speciality was Art Deco lamps. I would pick up old chrome stands, usually dulled from age and dirt, and replace the old wiring and rusty fittings. Finally I would polish the stands, fit them with suitable antique glass shades and sell them on to eager buyers. Those were the days before Portobello Market became the tourist trap it is today, and you could find anything from an old bicycle seat to the marble bust of some Victorian grandee. One day I came across a grimy wooden box - about the size of a shoebox – with four little drawers. At first glance it didn’t look like anything special, but on closer inspection I could see that some fine veneer work was visible in places under the caked-on dirt. The stallholder spotted my interest and said: “Ten quid. A bit of wire wool and some washing up liquid straight out of the bottle, and that’ll come up lovely.” I looked at him incredulously, but he was insistent. “If that don’t do the trick, bring it next Saturday and I’ll give yer fifteen quid back.” Coming from one of Portobello’s hard-nosed old dealers, this was a truly remarkable offer, so I paid up. At home I nervously donned a pair of rubber gloves, grabbed a pad of steel wool and a bottle of washing up liquid and began to carefully rub away the dirt. Within minutes I discovered to my amazement that the box was covered with an intricate inlaid marquetry pattern, laid out in different wood veneers. After several hours of cleaning and polishing, the reward for my work 72
was a beautiful antique that positively glowed in different shades of brown and yellow. Even today it’s still one of my prized possessions. While the experience of restoring my Portobello bargain was exciting, using detergent and steel wool on fine wood would probably make most experts tear out their hair. It may help to bear the following points in mind before you start out on your own projects: • Make sure you are not affecting the potential value of the object by using harsh chemicals or abrasive cloths. • Some antiques are valued for their patina and certain items – such as old coins – should never be polished. • Very old items may be more fragile than they look and may break if you clean them too vigorously. • If in any doubt, do some research or ask an expert. Here are ten tips for restoring your vintage bargains: • To remove general grime from old prints, gently roll a piece of doughy, fresh bread over the surface. • To remove old, rusted-in screws, first clean around screw head edges, heat the screw head with a hot air gun, then turn the screw a little TIGHTER, before undoing (use caution with heat if the object has a varnished or painted finish). • Age marks on porcelain can be removed by soaking overnight in baby bottle sterilising liquid. • Use Steradent tablets to get rid of water marks in old glass vases. • For a bright shine, polish chrome with baby oil and cotton wool. • To clean a gilded object, use a clean white cotton
cloth, cotton balls or Q-tips, and the barest amount of clean, cool water. After you have dampened the cleaning material, remove excess moisture on a dry piece of cloth before you apply it. • Rub undiluted household bleach into dirty hairline cracks in pottery and rinse off, to reduce the crack’s visibility. • Use half a lemon and salt to clean brass and copper items. This method is especially good for a flat surface, such as an antique tray. Apply, rinse off, dry carefully and clean with impregnated wadding, polishing finally with a soft cloth. Avoid polishing with man-made fibres as they may scratch the surface: a piece of old silk is ideal. • To repair a pottery item, clean the pieces with a mixture of mild dishwashing liquid and warm water and let them dry completely. Apply clear, slow-setting two part epoxy glue and hold the pieces in place with modelling clay so they don’t fall apart whilst drying. • Remove dust and dirty marks on old leather by dipping an artist’s paintbrush in methylated spirits. Use the meths sparingly and work on a small area at a time.
Whenever you carry out a restoration project, you should decide whether you want to keep the item or sell it on before you get started. If you want to keep it, you can restore it to your personal taste. Should you wish to sell it, it’s wise to do some research on the current market before you start the restoration. Although it may seem strange, some buyers may actually want the rust stains and marks of use that show an item has been handled and loved for many years.

The Life List
Genteel Gangs By Derek Thompson Many of us, who grew up on the right side of the tracks, may feel we’ve missed out on heady living and have had to make do with vicarious thrills. Not so much On the Waterfront as on the seafront with a good book. Luckily, senior subcultures are all the rage now. Aga Louts and Rayburners - kitchen living on the edge, where you dry your clothes and cook a hot pot at the same time. Sure to cause the occasional stir.
Dude Boys - you may have thinning hair and a bit of a paunch, but you can still wear (elasticated) denim jeans when you drive your sports car. You’re always in top gear. Gransters - child minding, fun loving, spinclassing dervishes. With added mints. Junk Rockers - you prowl the car boot sale and no Toby jug or James Herriot bargain is safe from your all-seeing eye. Your motto is ‘hagglers not stragglers’. Old Romantics - you favour black & white films, style over fashion, and in-depth conversations over Snapchat. You don’t need a watch because you are timeless. Sheddy Boys - the man cave is your domain, which you share with the lawnmower, a wind-up radio and your collection of hoes. The allotment is your stamping ground, mainly to compact the soil. Tantastics - you’ve been to the South of France and you want to let the world know it. (Or you’ve actually been to an out-of-town tanning salon and you just want the world to believe it.)

BEE CREATIVE IN THE GARDEN The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) and The Wildlife Trust have joined forces to urge gardeners to do more to help protect bumblebees and solitary bees, heroes of the pollinator world. The Bee Creative in the Garden! call comes as bees are under increasing pressure largely due to loss of habitat. In the countryside, 97% of lowland meadow has already been lost and the dramatic decrease in suitable habitats isn’t just confined to rural areas.
The network of 15 million gardens that once formed ‘green corridors’ for wildlife are disappearing at an alarming rate. The number of front gardens that have been paved over has tripled in a decade and over five million have no plants growing at all. Gardeners can download a wild bee-friendly gardening guide. Wildlife events and a ‘Bee
Creative’ photo competition will also be taking place from 1 April to 1 November 2017.
Helen Bostock from the RHS said: “A healthy garden is buzzing with bees and other pollinators. By providing nesting sites and growing nectar and pollen rich flowers gardeners can and do support a wide variety of bumblebee and solitary bees.”
Ellie Brodie from The Wildlife Trusts, says: “Anyone can take action to help wild bees whether you have a wall for vertical planting, window box, or back garden. It’s easy to plant a bee haven.” The wild bee-friendly gardening guide, ‘Get your garden buzzing for bees’, is free to download at wildaboutgardensweek.org.uk.

Five Minute fixes
Great results with minimum effort Nails Inc’s Gel One Coat polish delivers, as the saying goes, what it says on the tin. You get a glossy, gel-like finish, in just one coat. It lasts for ages, particularly if you have time to apply a base coat and top coat. Even on its own, it should stay chip free for a few days. Perfect for a quick pedicure to match your new summer sandals, Gel One Coat also contains biotin to help strengthen your nails. If you’re looking for a suits-all summery pink, try Portobello Mews. Exclusive to Marks and Spencer, Gel One Coat polishes cost £13 each. See www.marksandspencer.com. The phrase ‘flawless’ gets rather overused in the beauty industry, but in this case it really is well-deserved. The Mineral Air Airbrush Foundation System sprays a light mist of foundation to give you an even, smooth base coverage in seconds. The foundation is mixed with air, so you only end up using a few drops, meaning skin doesn’t feel too suffocated. It is 84

quite easy to overdo it, so you’ll want to aim to build up colour gradually. The full Mineral Air Airbrush Foundation System comes with a choice of seven shades of foundation and a liquid blush. At £114.99, it’s certainly not cheap, but at least you don’t need to use a separate primer or concealer. It’s exclusive to www.idealworld.tv. Natural skincare brand Optiat has recently brought out a new collection of clay masks. 100% natural, the masks are formulated with ingredients such as exfoliating organic hemp husks, kaolin clay, activated charcoal and essential oils. They only need to be left on for five minutes to give you a deep, gentle clean. Skin feels softer, smoother and fresher. See www. optiat.com.

While it isn’t an instant fix, you’ll reap the rewards from Murad’s Retinol Youth Renewal Serum pretty quickly nonetheless. 93% of testers saw a reduction in lines and wrinkles in just two weeks. It only takes a minute to massage the serum into your skin before bed each night. The retinol helps to boost cell renewal and freshen skin. I was really impressed with the results; my skin felt softer, plumper and less tired looking within just a few days. I have quite sensitive skin so can’t always use retinol creams, but this was gentle enough not to cause any irritation. (I did get a couple of spots in the first week, but they soon disappeared.) Cost £65 from www.murad.co.uk.

Technology
outdoor joys The best tech toys to take outside Some of the most entertaining outdoor toys are the simplest, such as the cute Swivel Car (around £22, with lots of firms offering very similar products). It’s a ride-on car with a difference: instead of pedalling or propelling it with your feet, you swivel the steering wheel and that generates movement. It’s small enough for toddlers and tough enough for big kids and even the odd adult. If you’d rather go for something more traditional, the Cozy Coupe - around £49 - has been a favourite of families for more than 30 years, and the iconic red and yellow version has been joined by dinosaur and police car versions. Complex toys can be fun too, of course. One kind of toy that’s improved dramatically in recent years is the electric car or bike for kids. It’s possible to get a decent trike for less than £40 that delivers 50 minutes of movement between charges, while around the £200 mark you’ll find impressive replicas of grown-up cars such as BMW’s futuristic electric i8. Remember that such vehicles do take a while to charge, so make sure you plug them in the night before you want to use them. If you’d rather not let your child loose behind the wheel but want to give them control of something fun, there’s a huge selection of radio controlled vehicles ranging from the toddler-friendly Little Tykes Tyre Twister (£39) to exceptionally fast scale models of performance cars such as Lamborghinis and Porsches. Even the most expensive of these are much cheaper than they used to be, with top-end models usually coming in well below £70. 88
Radio controlled cars are fun, but radio controlled flying machines are even more fun. You know you’re living in the future when you can walk into your local toy shop and come out with a smartphonecontrolled drone helicopter. Drones start at around £20 for basic ones and reach £190 for Star Warsthemed models, and drones with built-in cameras start at around £60. If you want to get serious, you can find a good selection of advanced drones with HD cameras and optical video stabilisers from around £300, rising to over £1,000 for high-end models. One word of warning with drones: their propellers can be sharp and cause injury if they bump into people, so it’s a good idea to look for one with a protective ring around the propellers if you’ll be giving it to a child or using it near kids or pets. And there are restrictions on where you can and can’t fly drones, such as in crowded areas or near airports. It’s a good idea to check up on the law before spending any money. There are also concerns over privacy: the neighbours probably won’t appreciate you flying a camera over their garden. Do you remember the days of potato guns and water pistols? They’ve become a lot more sophisticated, with products such as Nerf guns ranging from around £20 to the ridiculously overpowered N-Strike Mega Mastodon (£99), which fires 24 foam darts from a motorised revolving drum. Between it and the super-powered, super-soaking water pistols that have more in common with water cannons than the water pistols you remember from your own childhood, be wary of the weaponry you give your kids - because you can be sure you’ll be on the receiving end of the foam darts or freezing cold jets of water.

History
TIME FOR TEA By Catherine Rose Tea is enjoyed all over the world but the English adopted it as their own around four hundred years ago. Believed to have originated in Southern China, tea drinking dates back to around 3000 BC. However, it didn’t become popular in England until the 17th century, when it was made fashionable by King Charles II and his Portuguese wife Catherine de Braganza, who brought it over to the Royal court from her native country. Coffee houses had recently been established in London and the custom of tea drinking was quickly introduced. Samuel Pepys referred to it in his diary of 1660: ‘…I did send for a cup of tee (a China drink) of which I never had drank before’. The coffee houses also sold loose leaf tea so that women, who did not frequent them, could enjoy it at home. It soon became popular for wives to host tea parties and invite their friends. Tea was very much the privilege of the wealthy. It was expensive to import and seen as a valuable commodity, kept locked inside ornate caddies. Teapots, tea-cups and saucers were prized possessions and there were many different designs produced during this time. Because it was so expensive, the tea smuggling trade flourished. In 1785, following pressure from tea merchants, the government slashed the high import tax on tea, making it much more affordable to the masses. Thus, tea drinking grew in popularity among the working classes, sparking a debate about whether tea was bad for the health, causing ‘idleness’ and ‘melancholy’ amongst other things. Eventually, alcohol came to be viewed as 92
the far greater evil and working class people were then encouraged to become ‘teetotal’. The concept of afternoon tea is a peculiarly English tradition but tea served with food was only introduced in the mid-19th century by Anna Russell, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, to bridge the gap between lunch and dinner, which in those days was traditionally served quite late in the evening. Soon friends were joining her for ‘afternoon tea’ at her home in Woburn Abbey and, thanks to her frequent trips to London, the custom grew to become a fashionable social event amongst the upper classes. During the Victorian era, a wider selection of tea began to be imported from Sri Lanka (Ceylon) and India. Tea rooms serving afternoon tea grew in popularity, especially among women, being one of the few places where they could meet without a chaperone. By the early 20th century, many establishments had expanded on the custom of a musician playing in the background and were holding tea dances in the afternoons. Today, tea has become an integral part of our daily routine and could be described as Britain’s national drink. Although invented in America in the early 20th century, the tea bag didn’t become popular in England until the 1970s, when it revolutionised our tea drinking habits and put fortune tellers who read tea leaves at the bottom of a cup into decline! Still considered a rather genteel English custom, today, sumptuous afternoon teas are served by many top hotels with a bewildering number of different tea blends on offer along with a ‘tea sommelier’ to help you choose. They are often booked up months ahead - a testament to tea’s enduring popularity.

“I was hardly able to walk due to severe pain in my back and my cholesterol was very high. I never expected to lose the amount of weight I did over such a short space of time. The staff were all amazing and supportive, the programme easy to follow, the food enjoyable and the results speak for themselves. I would whole heartedly recommend Alevere to anyone who wants to safely lose weight and improve their health and lifestyle.” Teresa
