TRY BEFORE YOU BUY
If you are a regular reader of Discover you may remember that last year I bought classic VW campervan – completely out of character as I am a real “Princess and the Pea”. Well, it was a great success; I’ve woken up to views you can only get from wild camping, I’ve survived being wifi-free for more than two days and made many, new friends (still don’t get the waving at other campervan drivers!). The successful trial persuaded me to upgrade so I sadly say goodbye to “Jesse” (for sale … anyone?) and will be taking a younger (still 15 years old) “Annie” to many of the music events listed in our Special Feature on Summer Festivals (see page 29). If you’ve ever sold an old faithful car you’ll understand my feeling of betrayal in trading Jesse in for a younger model but I now have a toilet .. yeah!

Out with Old In with the New – Hang On! Yes, it’s often cheaper these days to replace a worn or broken gadget for new but before you do it’s really worth using a few websites and apps where you can buy and sell just about anything that’s used or not wanted; gumtree, freecycle, preloved, ebay. I helped furnish my daughter’s first rented flat entirely from gumtree! Or why not try to fix it yourself at a local Repair Café such as featured on page 48 – what a Melanie Tinson great idea! New Inheritance Tax Break: Will You Qualify? Many of you will have seen news about the new inheritance tax changes introduced in April 2017. Billed by the conservatives as a £1,000,000 allowance the new changes are not as simple as that. Since 6th April you now receive an additional £100,000 inheritance tax allowance on your death but this will only be applicable if you leave that amount of value relating to your house to your direct descendants. If your spouse/civil partner dies before you and does not use their allowance then you can use it in addition to yours. The good news is that direct descendants includes step children and adopted children. If you have no children though, you are going to lose out.
Some people might include a niece or nephew as well as their child as a beneficiary. Leaving your estate so your niece and daughter receive half each means you could lose part of the allowance. A simple re-write of your will leaving your house to your daughter and your investments to your niece could be enough to stop you losing the allowance. Trusts in wills are not automatically problematic nor is gifting your house into trust during your lifetime but it is important to review any such arrangements to ensure that you will not inadvertently pay more inheritance tax. 8
The new allowance is “the biggest change to inheritance tax laws since 2007
”
Trusts are particularly useful if, between you and your spouse/civil partner, your estates are worth more than £2,000,000. If you die with an estate worth more than £2,000,000 the allowance will start to disappear. Leaving the estate of the first spouse/civil partner to die into trust (so the surviving spouse/civil partner can benefit) or directly to descendants could be an effective way of preserving the allowance. The new allowance comes with other caveats too. Many people prefer to leave their house in trust till their grandchild is 25 rather than allowing their grandchild to inherit aged 5. This could mean that the allowance is lost but you have to weigh up what is more important: paying less tax or avoiding assets passing to a beneficiary too young. The new allowance is the biggest change to inheritance tax laws since 2007 and it is therefore vital for you to review your arrangements to ensure they are as tax efficient as possible. A member of the expert private client team at Trethowans Solicitors would be pleased to help you. To arrange an initial discussion at our Winchester or Hedge End offices, please telephone 02380 321 000 or visit www.trethowans.com. Home visits are also available.

WHERE THERE’S A WILL... It may not be a subject we want to think about, but professional will writer, Bayarmaa Howard talks about the importance of having a will and how to go about having one written. Should everyone make a will? Anyone with some form of asset, whether it’s savings, a property, a business, or just something they value, ought to have a will. Without a valid will, you are potentially leaving your loved ones with huge legal problems, and the people you may want to inherit from you could be left with nothing. Are DIY wills valid? You can buy ‘off the shelf ’ wills in some newsagents or the post office. If your affairs are straightforward and your wishes are simple, a DIY will might be fine. If your wishes are more complex, or if you are concerned about making mistakes, it would be advisable to instruct a professional to write your will - it doesn’t have to be expensive. Why use a will writer? Professional will writers are specialists. They provide a personal service, usually coming to your home when it is convenient for you. They will talk to you about your personal circumstances, including your assets, who you would like as your executors and of course who you would like to benefit from your will. You may have in mind specific gifts, charitable legacies or concerns regarding power of attorney or your tax liability. Will writers can help with all of these matters and more. They also tend to be less expensive than solicitors. How do I know a will writer is properly qualified? Your will is one of the most important of 10
documents you will ever make, so it is important to carry out due diligence before employing anyone to write your will, whether it is a will writer or a solicitor. If a will writer belongs to The Society of Will Writers, you can be safe in the knowledge that they are trained, qualified, carefully vetted and carry a professional indemnity insurance, see www.willwriters.com How long does the process take? An interview can take between 1 and 3 hours, depending upon the complexity of your affairs. The will itself takes about another 5 - 10 days to be written and witnessed. How should people store a will? Ideally somewhere dry and fireproof, a home safe is perfect of course. The Society of Will Writers has a secret location in Wales in which they store hard copies of clients’ wills, plus they have digital copies on file for quick access in case changes are required at a later date.

Family Cleaning Business Endorsed by Government Trustmark Scheme Ken and Pauline launched The Kleen Machine in 2005 specialising in domestic cleaning. With rigorous professional training in cleaning carpets, upholstery, rugs, leather furniture and stone/tiled floors, the Kleen Machine has been providing top quality cleaning services to people in the Meon Valley area since 2005. With their family carpet cleaning business, The Kleen Machine, now endorsed by the Government Trustmark, Ken and Pauline Lawrence have gained recognition of the excellent cleaning and reliability they adhere to. “Being recognised by Hampshire Trading Standards and the Government Trustmark is an endorsement of the standards and service we provide to our clients” says Ken. “When clients have invested in quality furnishings they need to be reassured that
the cleaners understand their concerns and have the training to competently clean those items”. The Kleen Machine has internationally recognised cleaning qualifications which include training with Woolsafe. The business is a member of the National Carpet Cleaners Association. Ken visits all clients in the Meon Valley area personally to assess their requirements, answer questions and provide a quotation tailored to their specific needs. He is present at every stage ensuring care and quality of service. “A correctly performed clean” says Ken, “can breathe new life into tired furnishings. Wear and damage cannot be removed, but appropriate treatments can reduce the appearance of marks, brighten colours and generally refresh them. A targeted clean will extend the life of furnishings and save the client from the expense and upheaval of replacing quality items”.
Ken & Pauline Lawrence Ken says “there have been some challenging tasks, one client, a magician by trade, had a situation he couldn’t magic away. Whilst the walls and ceiling of his hall were being redecorated the carpet had been overlooked and became splattered with white paint. The cleaning took many hours, as some was gloss paint, but eventually the carpet was to the client’s satisfaction and the embarrassing sight was no more”. So the next time you are embarrassed at the look of your furnishings give Ken and Pauline a call on: Freephone: 0800 695 0318 to find the solution to your concerns.

Buying holiday insurance can sometimes take a back seat when you’re planning to get away. It’s an important investment in your health and safety, however, offering protection and reassurance if something goes wrong when you’re a long way from home. The cost of holiday insurance depends on a number of factors including your age, the length of time you’ll be away, whether or not you’re travelling alone, and the types of activity on the agenda. A comprehensive ‘standard’ policy generally covers the following, although policies do vary: • • • • • • • 12
Holiday cancellation or missed departure. Theft. Medical assistance. Emergency repatriation. Baggage loss or delay. Other lost or damaged items. Personal injury.
So what other types of holiday insurance are available, and which might be suitable for you? Single trip/annual or multi trip If you only intend to take one break during a 12-month period, a single trip insurance policy would be the most cost-effective choice as long as it covers everything you need. Annual or multi trip insurance is more suitable if you’re going away more than once a year, but there’s usually a maximum allowable duration which is generally 90 days. European/worldwide travel The expense of repatriating travellers from countries outside Europe, or obtaining medical treatment in the USA for example, is very high. Insurance companies have to take this into account when pricing their policies, so if you’re only travelling to Europe the cost should be lower than for worldwide travel. Take care to check whether a specified number of days are mentioned in the policy, as your insurance will be invalid if you exceed this number. è

Winter/extreme sports A ‘standard’ holiday insurance policy usually contains exclusion clauses relating to winter or extreme sports due to the additional risk of injury. Also, winter sports equipment is expensive, so you’ll need to pay more to cover it against loss or theft. Gap year/backpackers’ insurance Backpackers’ insurance provides cover for an extended length of time away, but there may be limitations specified in the policy, for example the number of times you can return to the UK. There could also be restrictions on returning home before the stated period ends, so it’s important to check the details. Unlike annual insurance where you can go away for several trips during a 12-month period, gap year and backpackers’ insurance covers one extended holiday break. Family policies Family travel policies generally require all those included on the policy to live at the same address, and can be a cheaper option than insuring each family member individually. Some insurers offer
higher rates of cover, or even free insurance for children under a certain age. Group travel Groups such as work colleagues, stag and hen parties, or school trips, where everyone travels to and from the same place, can use group travel insurance to save money. Some insurance companies offer one member of the group free insurance as an incentive. Pre-existing medical conditions If you have a pre-existing medical condition, you might be tempted to take a chance with your holiday insurance and not disclose it. This can prove to be a very expensive mistake, however, as the cost of repatriation is extremely high. Fortunately, some insurance companies offer policies for those already suffering from a health condition. Although it will be more costly than buying a standard policy, it’s impossible to put a price on peace of mind while you’re away.

“Dear Doctor” I’ve noticed a couple of episodes of blood on the toilet paper and my bowel habits are not as regular as they were before. Should I be worried? There could be a variety of reasons for such symptoms ranging from very benign conditions like haemorrhoids (piles) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), to more serious conditions like polyps and cancer. If your bowel habits change for any reason and the changes persists for more than 4 weeks you should consult a doctor and have some baseline tests done. A change in your bowel habits could be; getting constipated or going loose and frequent. Mucus (white frothy stuff) in your stool and a degree of urgency when one has to rush to the toilet are more worrying symptoms. Blood after the stool may be seen on the paper or dripping in the pan. If there is a severe pain in the perineal area at the time of bleeding it could suggest a “fissure” - a crack in the lining of the back passage, which is easily treatable with the right medications. Bright red blood and dripping in the pan without any pain are features suggestive of piles. A local examination can easily identify any piles in the area, though the best test in these situations is a flexible sigmoidoscopy. This is also known as a telescope test where a fibre-optic camera is passed through the back passage in order to examine the rectum and left colon.

The most effective treatment for piles today is the Doppler-guided ligation where specialised equipment is used to cut off the blood supply of piles and no tissue has to be excised, making it a relatively painless day case procedure associated with a very quick recovery. If the changes in your bowel habits persist for more than 6 weeks, you get intermittent rectal bleeding, lose weight for no obvious reason, are found to be anaemic or have a strong family history - I would strongly recommend you contact your GP or a specialist in bowel diseases.

NEW CAR SEAT REGULATIONS You may have heard that new car seat rules have been introduced, banning backless booster seats for young children. All the rules actually mean is that manufacturers can’t introduce new models of backless booster seats for children shorter than 125cm or weighing less than 22kg. So if you already use a booster seat, you don’t have to change it. That being said, high back booster seats have been found to offer much greater protection to young children than backless ones. So it might be time for an upgrade. If you are planning to buy a new seat, look for one that offers some side impact protection, such as those by Diono. The Diono MXT, £85, is a good choice. Unlike some seats, both height and back width can be adjusted very easily, so it can be used
Kidzone
for children between 97 and 160cm tall. There’s a choice of four colours and the covers are removable and washable. Our testers (aged five and seven) found the MXT very comfortable. It also kept them in an upright position when they slept, rather than allowing them to slump over. And they loved the snack trays (mainly for storing seashells and crayons) - see www.uk.diono.com.

OUTDOOR JOYS The best tech toys to take outside Some of the most entertaining outdoor toys are the simplest, such as the cute Swivel Car (around £22, with lots of firms offering very similar products). It’s a ride-on car with a difference: instead of pedalling or propelling it with your feet, you swivel the steering wheel and that generates movement. It’s small enough for toddlers and tough enough for big kids and even the odd adult. If you’d rather go for something more traditional, the Cozy Coupe - around £49 - has been a favourite of families for more than 30 years, and the iconic red and yellow version has been joined by dinosaur and police car versions. Complex toys can be fun too, of course. One kind of toy that’s improved dramatically in recent years is the electric car or bike for kids. It’s possible to get a decent trike for less than £40 that delivers 50 minutes of movement between charges, while around the £200 mark you’ll find impressive replicas of grown-up cars such as BMW’s futuristic electric i8. Remember that such vehicles do take a while to charge, so make sure you plug them in the night before you want to use them.
22
If you’d rather not let your child loose behind the wheel but want to give them control of something fun, there’s a huge selection of radio controlled vehicles ranging from the toddler-friendly Little Tykes Tyre Twister (£39) to exceptionally fast scale models of performance cars such as Lamborghinis and Porsches. Even the most expensive of these are much cheaper than they used to be, with top-end models usually coming in well below £70. Radio controlled cars are fun, but radio controlled flying machines are even more fun. You know you’re living in the future when you can walk into your local toy shop and come out with a smartphone-controlled drone helicopter. Drones start at around £20 for basic ones and reach £190 for Star Wars-themed models, and drones with built-in cameras start at around £60. If you want to get serious, you can find a good selection of advanced drones with HD cameras and optical video stabilisers from around £300, rising to over £1,000 for highend models. è
Do you remember the days of potato guns and water pistols? They’ve become a lot more sophisticated, with products such as Nerf guns ranging from around £20 to the ridiculously overpowered N-Strike Mega Mastodon (£99), which fires 24 foam darts from a motorised revolving drum. Between it and the super-powered, super-soaking water pistols that have more in common with water cannons than the water pistols you remember from your own childhood, be wary of the weaponry you give your kids - because you can be sure you’ll be on the receiving end of the foam darts or freezing cold jets of water. One word of warning with drones: their propellers can be sharp and cause injury if they bump into people, so it’s a good idea to look for one with a protective ring around the propellers if you’ll be giving it to a child or using it near kids or pets. And there are restrictions on where you can and can’t fly drones, such as in crowded areas or near airports. It’s a good idea to check up on the law before spending any money. There are also concerns over privacy: the neighbours probably won’t appreciate you flying a camera over their garden.

CELEBRITY LINE-UP FOR MUSIC FESTIVAL Joining the Primrose Piano Quartet at this year’s West Meon Music Festival will be an impressive lineup of special guest performers as the quartet invites some of its many musician friends to join them. Heading with list will be world-famous clarinetist Michael Collins who will be performing the Brahms Clarinet Quintet with members of the quartet. “We are delighted that Michael will be performing with us again this year,” says Andrew Fuller, the Primrose’s cellist and festival’s musical director. “He enjoyed himself so much last year, when we played the Mozart Clarinet Quintet together, that he made it very clear he wanted to make a return visit.” Newcomer this year will be mezzo-soprano Louise Winter, a soloist with the Royal Opera and Glyndebourne Festival, who will be performing songs by both Robert and Clara Schumann and
The Primrose Piano Quartet left to right are Susanne Stanzeleit, John Thwaites, Dorothea Voige and Andrew Fuller.
Brahms in the festival’s final concert on Sunday (17 September) while the award winning VickersBovey Guitar Duo will be taking the stage on Saturday afternoon (16 September) at the nearby Church of Our Lady in Warnford. As in previous years, the festival’s opening candlelit concert focuses on Viennese favourites and this year includes Brahms’ G minor Piano Quartet: a recording of which by the Primrose has featured in Radio 3’s “Building a Library” series. The Festival runs from 15-17 September, full details of all the festival programmes can be found at www.westmeonmusic.co.uk.

The UK Festival scene
(For everyone who thinks they are a bit old for that sort of thing…)
By Tania Houston The music scene is a vibrant and important part of UK culture, and the summer festival season is the exciting showcase for the best of our new and established artists. If you’ve never been to a festival however, you might think that what you’ve seen of Glastonbury epitomises the reason you don’t go: lots of mud and a huge drunk crowd of mostly twenty-somethings.
Let me enlighten you! I am – shall we say - a ‘more mature’ music fan and I promise you that there is something on offer for almost every age, music taste and budget. There are festivals for party animals and for families; for teens and baby boomers; for day trippers and weekenders; in other words, for anyone that likes the idea of having fun with a bit of music involved.
These pages give you some help with where to start and a more information about some of the ones I know a bit about.
Bestival, Stevie Gedge
How do I choose?
There are several things to consider when planning your summer festival diary. Most of the events could be said to be suitable for anyone. Very few don’t accept children. But try to find out who the organisers are really targeting and match yourself with those. 1 You have a tight budget. Aim for the one-day only gigs, and make the most of anything free or very low cost and local. Look at: Beggars Fair, Mela Festival 2 You have young children. Does the website say children are ‘accepted’ or ‘welcomed’ – there’s a world of difference. Look at: Camp Bestival, Victorious
3 You have tweenagers/ teenagers. They need keeping an eye on, but they want to spend the time with their friends, not you. Day events are ideal for this as it gives them a bit of freedom, but stops it getting out of hand. Look at: Curious Arts, Victorious. 4 You are over 40, child-free and want Radio 2/Breeze FM type music. The retro festivals are best for you. Look at: Wickham Festival and Let’s Rock
5 You are an adult with no ties and really into music and/ or fun and dancing. Aim for something meant for grownups and chart watchers. Look at: Common People, Reading Festival. 6 You are an adult with no ties and want a full entertainment program e.g. talks and activity. Plenty on offer and we’d recommend Blissfields (local), Cornbury and Secret Garden Party.

A weekend AwAy On your doorstep is great, but it doesn’t feel like a holiday if you can nip back home at a moment’s notice. What’s needed is bit of distance (but not too much) and definitely a complete change of scene. From June to August, these ones will cram as much into three days as a fortnight in Magaluf. Secret Garden Party 20-23 July, Huntingdon, cambridgeshire
caMP BeStIVaL 27-30 July Lulworth, dorset
Whilst this is very much a music festival, it is equally a huge weekend outdoor party. Some really exciting Credit: Max Miechowski musicians, side shows, talks, fancy dress, fireworks and more, you will have just the best time ever. It has been announced this will be the last time it runs having been around for 13 years so I guess all good things…, but ‘SGP’ fans are determined to make a truly memorable send-off. This is a great example of a ‘don’t think you are too old’ type of event. Yes, there will be more under 40s than over, but the relaxed environment means that anyone, young/old, slim/fat, straight/gay, normal or a bit quirky is equally welcome.
Kids are king at Camp Bestival and a large portion of the site is devoted to children, with stacks of activities, including “The Den” for 13-17 year olds. Be assured though that the music isn’t lacking (plenty for those even without children!) with headliners Holly Johnson (Frankie goes to Hollywood) and Madness, through to Louisa Johnson (X-factor winner) and chart-topping Anne-Marie. Then there’s theatre, comedy and a fireworks show and well serviced/well behaved camping areas. All that and in the grounds of the beautiful Lulworth Castle.

WILderneSS FeStIVaL 3-6 august, cornbury Park, Oxfordshire Into August and school holidays, so a festival that truly offers something for everyone. Not every family is universally into the same music, or indeed into music at all. Wilderness offers a grand buffet of activities, where even the hardest to please will admit they had fun. Music – Grace Jones and Two Door Cinema Club for starters. Talks, poetry, debate, theatre, games, workshops, outdoor activity, wellbeing and dining experiences. Topped off with plenty of entertainment for children (because if they aren’t enjoying it, neither are you). www.wildernessfestival.com

on The doorstep So maybe you like the idea, but just don’t want to commit yourself to spending a lot of time at one or blowing the budget just trying the idea out. FeStIVaLL 29 July, Southampton New on the scene this year is Festivall which is looking like a fantastic day out at Let’S rOck very reasonable prices. Held 8 July, Southampton in Mayflower Park, it will be A retro festival, so if you are of the headlined by Alesha Dixon and right age, you will have grown up also features Conor Maynard, with these acts. There’s just one X-factor finalists Union-J and Radio stage at the front, but the day is as 1’s Scott Mills with a DJ set. But much about the socialising as it is there’s plenty more with other about the music. Picnic blankets, stages, a Comedy Tent, and a chairs and singing along all equally dance tent. For the littl’uns, Tiny prominent! Headliners include Fest is their own area within the main event. www.festiv-all.co.uk. Tony Hadley (ex Spandau Ballet).
VIctOrIOuS 25-27 aug, Southsea Victorious is unique in its truly universal appeal. It has a dedicated entertainment area for children, Rita Ora and Olly Murs for the teens and Madness and Stereophonics for the ‘nonteens’. Being a flat site it’s good for parents with buggies and elderly or disabled. And with bargain price day tickets (adults £30, age 5-15 £8) and a good train service to Southsea, well what’s not to like? victoriousfestival.co.uk
Two big ones There are two big all weekenders in this area which need a budget and some stamina to attend. BLISSFIeLdS 6-8 July, Winchester Several of the Discover team went to this one last year and loved it. Blissfields has become a little gem on the festival circuit and whilst it’s never going to be a Reading, Glastonbury or Isle of Wight sized event, it has pulled loads of established names in the past such as Bastille and Mumford and Sons. An illicit journey to the Hidden Hedge at night is a must to sample the bohemian delights of fire dancers, acrobats and trapeze artists. A wonderful festival experience on a smaller scale. blissfields.co.uk
WIckHaM FeStIVaL 3-6 august, Wickham KT Tunstall (who is a great performer), 10cc, The Levellers and Seth Lakeman are headlining this year. There are no current chart-toppers, but then it’s not that sort of festival. The audience tends to be families (and plenty of children’s entertainment offered) and a slightly older audience. But it means there’s a relaxed atmosphere and good camping/campervan facilities giving a lovely combination of excellent music in a social environment. www.wickhamfestival.co.uk

The two-day event, held at Bath Road Park, will feature some of the region’s most exciting chefs, restaurants and artisan producers as well as raising money for a marine environmental charity which is backed by Olympic yachting legend Sir Ben Ainslie. The Festival will play host to over 70 producers and pop-up restaurants across the weekend, including Chewton Glen, The Montagu Arms, Careys Manor and Lymington’s much-acclaimed Elderflower restaurant. It aims to serve as many seafood delicacies as possible, from lobster mac n’ cheese, local hand dived scallops, clams, crab and mackerel. Wines include Hambledon’s award winning English sparkling, a pint of festival ale courtesy of Ringwood Brewery, or local gin or rum from Dancing Cows Distillery. Bath Road Park will also welcome Michelinstarred chefs in the demonstration kitchen. Luke Matthews of Chewton Glen and Roux Scholar Matthew Tomkinson of The Terrace will star alongside Pascal Aussignac from London’s Club Gascon and Mark Jarvis, of Anglo, one of London’s hottest young chefs. In addition to the pop-up food stalls, there will be live music across the weekend with leading bands and artists playing a mix of soul, blues, ska and rag-time – plus a 12-strong sea shanty band. To further entertain the crowds, there will be children’s activities and street entertainers.

Short Story
TADPOLES Dennis sat on his bench, pond watching. The starlings were coming home to roost. It was his favourite time of day. He enjoyed the soothing sound made by the fountain playing on the surface of the water. Gaynor said the fountain was tacky - two little stone cherubs huddled under their umbrella - but Dennis liked it. His peace was broken by Gaynor running down the lawn towards him. “That was our Daniel on the phone, you’ll never guess what?” Dennis could never guess what when it came to Gaynor. “Is his car alright?” He searched Gaynor’s flushed face for clues. “Never mind his car.” Gaynor perched on the bench next to him, fizzing with excitement. “He took Carly for a twelve week scan today.” Dennis nodded. “Aren’t you pleased?” she asked. “I’m always pleased,” Dennis said, watching a dragonfly hover among the reeds. “That’s not even the best bit,” Gaynor looked like she was about to pop. “They’re only having twins!” A wood pigeon flapped its wings in the ash tree. 36
by Jackie Brewster
“Crikey,” said Dennis. “That’ll be a handful.” “We’re going to be grandparents,” Gaynor frowned. “Is that all you can say?” He unscrewed the tub of fish food. “You’re not doing that smelly stuff now are you?” she said. “Of all times?” “Fish have got to eat, Gaynor,” Dennis said. He rather liked the smell of fish food; it smelled honest. Gaynor watched with pursed lips as the flakes floated across the pond’s surface. “Of course that thing will have to go,” she said finally. “What will?” Dennis looked up. “The pond,” Gaynor tutted. “You can’t have toddlers around a pond, it’s not safe.” “They’re not even born yet,” Dennis said indignantly. “We have to show good faith,” Gaynor said. “Danny and Carly won’t bring them round if it’s not child-friendly.” Dennis opened his mouth to object. “It’s no good.” Gaynor looked at the pond as though it was toxic waste. “It’ll have to be filled in.”
Dennis brooded, saying nothing. The only sound was the little cherub fountain. “Would you look at that!” he said suddenly. “What?” Gaynor said. “On the lily pad.” He pointed. “That little black fellow.” “What’s that?” Gaynor peered over the top of her glasses. A shiny creature clung trembling to the leaf. “It’s a frog,” Dennis said. “I knew we had tadpoles, this must be the first one to find its legs.” “I didn’t know we had tadpoles,” Gaynor said. “We’ve had a fair few,” Dennis said. “Sweet little chap, isn’t it?” “Very sweet,” Gaynor said. Dennis sat back and smiled. “Do you remember filling a jam jar with frogspawn when you were a kid?” he said. “Oh yes.” She stretched out her legs. “I can remember it like it was yesterday.”
“Then they’d hatch into tadpoles,” Dennis said. “We’d keep them in the pantry,” Gaynor said, “then tip them back into the brook and watch them swim away.” “Did you have a fishing net?” Dennis asked. “I didn’t, I used to scoop them up with my bare hands.” “You were brave,” Gaynor chuckled. “Summer lasts for ages when you’re a kid,” Dennis said, and then there was silence between them. The wood pigeon cooed. “I suppose we could just build a little fence around it,” Gaynor said finally. “You know, to make it safe.” “I suppose,” Dennis nodded. “That would be no bother.” “We could buy them fishing nets,” Gaynor added, “for when they’re older.” “Not a bad idea.” Dennis smiled and put his arm around Gaynor. “Twins, eh?” He chuckled, gazing at the pair of cherubs beneath their stone umbrella.

Health
WHEN THOSE ‘GOLDEN YEARS’ ARE TARNISHED BY STRESS The expression ‘golden years’ refers to that period in our lives in between retirement and age-related physical decline: a time when we are supposed to enjoy the greatest quality of life. There’s a general assumption that life is easier and sweeter for the older generation, and this has been supported by a survey carried out by the Office for National Statistics, in which 300,000 adults agreed that life satisfaction peaks between the ages of 65 and 79. However, while life is golden for some, others may find themselves facing unexpected responsibility and stress. In these insecure economic times, many grown-up children are forced to return to the family home for economic reasons, often with the expectation that their aging parents will provide childcare. 38
And it’s not just the younger generation who may need help. As people are living longer, it’s not uncommon to find individuals in their 60s and 70s supporting their elderly parents, sometimes with full-time care. While it’s natural to want to help, it’s unwise to ignore the fact that age is creeping up on us. Unfortunately, as we age we become more vulnerable to the effects of stress: a recent study by Harvard Medical School has reported that when we are stressed, the part of the brain that processes emotions such as fear and anger triggers the release of white blood cells. These cells, used by the body to fight disease and injury, can cause inflammation that can eventually leads to angina, heart attacks and strokes if the stress is allowed to continue. Other potentially harmful hormones, equally damaging in the long term, are also released during stressful episodes. è

39
Signs of stress can include feeling overwhelmed, guilty, lonely or constantly anxious, as well as lacking interest in activities you have previously enjoyed. You may also feel constantly fatigued, or become easily irritated. Physical symptoms can include significant changes in weight, headaches and neck or lower back pain. If family members are dependent upon you, you may not be able to change your situation, but following the steps below may help: • Ask for help from friends and family – don’t wait for it to be offered. • Do your best to get enough sleep and exercise. • Set realistic goals, by breaking large tasks up into small ones. • If you’re worried about your finances, ask family members to contribute, or check your eligibility to receive state benefits. • If you are caring for someone who is ill or disabled, research what help is available on a local level. • Keep in touch with friends and relatives. • Use meditation or mindfulness exercises to aid relaxation.
40
If none of this helps, the next step should be to visit your doctor to explain how you feel. Don’t be afraid to use all the medical and practical resources that are available to you. Fortunately, even in these days of austerity and local service cuts, there are organisations you can turn to for help. Try Independent Age (www.independentage. org) or Age UK (www.ageuk.org.uk) to pick up some valuable information and advice. Sharing your feelings and concerns with others is an important first step. Hopefully it won’t be long before you find the support you need, making your life less stressful and bringing you a little closer to those golden years you so richly deserve.

LOCAL CHORUS RAISES MONEY FOR SHEDFIELD RIDING FOR THE DISABLED Each year Southdowns Ladies Harmony choose a different charity, and chorus member Sue Norris nominated Shedfield Riding for the Disabled to be their chosen charity for 2016. Sue, with a life-long love of horses, and a career in occupational therapy, had been quick to volunteer at the charity when she retired, so the chorus was thrilled to have a personal connection. Cascade chairman Lesley Quinton was delighted to present Shirley with a cheque for £835, money raised from our singouts during 2016. This will go towards specialist equipment such as reins and a mounting block – Shirley said the donation was fantastic and that she was so pleased that it would help disabled riders achieve things they never thought possible. For more information go to www.facebook.com/shedfieldridingfordisabled If you are interested in joining the chorus, or would like to book us to sing at your event, go www.cascadeharmony.org

IF IT’S BROKEN DON’T BIN IT, BRING IT TO A REPAIR CAFE!
Repair Cafés are free meeting places all about repairing things - together. You’ll find tools and materials there to help you make the repairs on anything you bring clothes, furniture, electrical appliances, bicycles, crockery, appliances, toys and there’s expert volunteers, with repair skills on hand for help. If you have nothing to repair, you can lend a hand with someone else’s repair job and enjoy a cuppa at the same time. There are over a thousand Repair Cafes around the world and Southampton hosts the only one in Hampshire. Why repair? We throw away vast amounts of stuff. Even things with almost nothing wrong, and which could get a new lease on life after a simple repair. People have forgotten they can repair things themselves or they no longer know how. Society doesn’t always show much appreciation for the people who still have this practical knowledge, and against their will they are often left standing on the sidelines. Their experience is never or hardly ever used. The Repair Café changes all that! People with these skills are getting involved again 48
and valuable practical knowledge is being passed on to others. Items are given a longer life, making for a greener planet. As well as focusing on sustainability, the Repair Café just wants to show how much fun repairing things can be, and how easy it often is. Why don’t you give it a go? Who thought up the idea? The first Repair Café was opened by Martine Postm in Amsterdam in 2009. Since 2011, the Repair Café Foundation has provided professional support to an amazing 1,254 groups around the worldwide. JANE AUSTEN AT WINCHESTER CATHEDRAL To commemorate the 200th anniversary on the death of Jane Austen, Winchester Cathedral is hosting events and activities celebrating the life of one of the world’s most famous authors, who was buried in the north aisle of the Cathedral on 24 July 1817. Visitors are welcome to come and learn more about this much-loved author, whose work has inspired people, generation after generation. The Jane Austen Story is a permanent exhibition, telling the story of Jane’s life in Hampshire and the final few weeks in Winchester before her death. This summer only (to the end of September), an additional exhibition will be added displaying beautiful artefacts from Jane’s life. There will be various performances along the way with a Jane Austen theme. Pride and Prejudice needs no introduction, and will be performed in the Cathedral Close by acclaimed outside theatre company, Illyria. Performances are on 28, 29 and
