INAUGURAL ‘FESTIVALL’ READY TO ENTERTAIN SOUTHAMPTON This July (29th) Southampton hosts its biggest one-day event of the year, the all-new FestivALL.
Set against the unique backdrop of Southampton's waterfront in Mayflower Park, this one-day extravaganza of music, comedy and entertainment will showcase a diverse mix of national artists alongside some of the city’s best emerging music talent. Songstress Alesha Dixon will be headlining the Main Stage alongside Conor Maynard and Southampton’s own Radio 1 DJ Scott Mills, while local bands The Novatones, Black Kat Boppers and The Rising are just some of the local talent performing on Band Stand Stage. There will be loads of laughter in the Comedy Tent with performances from Stewart Francis and Milo McCabe among others, while fans of the 80s and 90s can be transported back in time in
the Electrolove Big Top dance tent.
FestivALL is set to be one of the most welcoming events of the year - even for the smallest of people. Tiny Fest - a children’s festival within the main event - will be hosting a huge variety of kids’ entertainment including Mini Mix, Paw Patrol and Football fun with the Saint’s Foundation and Barclay’s Digital Eagle Lab. Editor’s Letter
are you talking to me? I’m sure I mentioned in a previous editor’s letter that I broke my arm 18 months ago. It never fixed itself properly so I have recently had an operation which means I am in a sling for the next four weeks. Typing with one hand is frustratingly slow, so I purchased some professional voice recognition software. In many ways I have been very impressed. It quickly learns words like Eastleigh and Chandlers Ford, but there are some errors which are infuriating. For example how often do you use ‘their’? Rarely, but that’s the word which always seems to appear instead of ‘there’.
As we all do when something annoys us, I found myself shouting at the screen. The microphone was still on and it was funny seeing my anger appear as a sentence in an email! Mind you, even that was wrong, spelling out “you stupid lovely software”. It looks like we are stuck with keyboards for some time to come. I always enjoy putting together our summer editions, as there are so many interesting events to go to. It doesn’t always have to cost a fortune. We have two really useful features this month, one on free or low cost days out, and one on things to do on the water. Together with a highlights of bigger events and the usual what’s on listing, it’ll be a great summer! Thank you.

health & exercise Everyone has read articles or watched programmes on their Tv about the benefits of exercise and a healthy balanced diet. Exercise can take many forms, it’s not all redfaced sweaty people pumping iron or pounding the treadmill down the gym. There are many different things you can do to help keep you and your heart in good shape, and it needn’t hit you hard in the pocket. The secret to a lasting exercise regime is to first find something you like doing, you are far more likely to stick to if you enjoy it, it’s all too easy to go full steam ahead with an exercise programme that you don’t really like and that will increase the chances of you giving up. Of course, the exercise needs to be backed up with a sensible diet, nobody is saying only eat vegetables and salads all the time, but a good rule of thumb is ‘everything in moderation’. By all means, have treats and takeaways, just remember in between those naughty moments try to eat a balanced diet consisting of the five food groups.

The Great Brick Safari: An Interactive Experience Marwell Wildlife is to become the first UK zoo to host a collection of giant LEGO brick animals. This summer over 80 sculptures, representing 25 different species, will be installed at the Hampshire attraction, offering an exciting and unique trail to connect children with nature. Over 2 million bricks will be used to make the sculptures, which are being created by Bordonbased LEGO building company Bright Bricks. Among them will be a 1.5 tonne elephant, a life size Bengal tiger and a trio of Giant panda cubs. Other sculptures will be inspired by Marwell’s own diverse collection of animals, with a red ruffed lemur, a warthog and a mob of meerkats all featuring on the trail.
James Cretney, Chief Executive of Marwell Wildlife said: “We are delighted to be the first zoo in the UK to host an interactive LEGO brick experience. We know our guests both old and young are going to absolutely love the trail.” LEGO fans of all ages will also be able to try their hands at making their own animal sculptures in the LEGO brick play area. The Great Brick Safari will be included with general admission to Marwell Zoo and runs from 1 August until 1 October.
SOUTHAMPTON MELA FESTIVAL On Saturday 15 July Southampton’s biggest free family festival is back. The Southampton Mela Festival will fill Hoglands Park with music, dance and family activities from around the world. It is a long-standing summer highlight in Southampton’s events calendar. Now in its 16th year it is estimated to attract 20,000 people from along the South coast. Vinod Desai MBE, Southampton Mela Programmer and Art Asia Chief Executive said: “The Southampton Mela Festival has built a reputation as a great free family day out with plenty of entertainment and activities for young and old. We create memorable performances, the people create a memorable atmosphere - it is a very special day”.

Although many distributors stay with us for years, teens grow up and adults grow older, meaning that we do regularly have vacancies in the area. We deliver throughout Chandlers Ford, but also in Otterbourne, Hursley and Boyatt Wood.
Flexible work The beauty of this job is that we aren’t asking you to commit to a regular day, nor do we expect you to go out in unsociable hours. All we need is for you to be available once a month (or possibly once every other month) for a few hours, and we give you 5 days to do the delivery. 10
Close to home We try to find a route close to home for you if we can, but if you are an adult we will pay mileage if we ask you to travel more than a mile.
Rates of pay It depends on the route as some are easier than others. But for aged 13-16 (who usually get the easier routes) it’s a minimum of £5.50 per hundred magazines. For adults it’s a minimum of £6.75 a hundred, then there’s a bit extra for including leaflets. It should take around 45 to 60 minutes to deliver 100 magazines, but less time in some areas. NEW PRE-SCHOOL BUILDING Children at Knightwood pre-school will benefit from a brand new building for their day nursery, after planning permission was granted. As part of their plans to improve sporting and leisure facilities across the Borough, Test Valley Borough Council will be making changes to the Knightwood Leisure Centre. As a result, children who used a studio within the Leisure Centre complex for their day nursery will now be relocated to a new building next to the leisure centre. Councillor Tony Ward said: “In recent years a small studio inside the leisure centre has been used to provide a temporary solution for the children. The relocation of this facility to its own purpose build OFSTED approved nursery offers a huge improvement in facilities for the children and peace of mind for parents in need of childcare.” 18

the Eastleigh Child Contact Centre Eastleigh Child Contact Centre (ECCC) opened in 2003 and has supported over 275 families. Today there are about 350 centres nation-wide and ECCC is accredited by the National Association of Child Contact Centres (NACCC). The centre is independent of any other organisation, and although the venue for their sessions are within the church, they are not part of that church. They welcome all families from all communities. The sessions are run by experienced volunteers, led and supported by the co-ordinator of the centre. They operate as a charity and the trustees raise money through grants, contracts and referral fees to keep the service going. The aim to provide a safe, child centred, neutral,
and comfortable place for children to see their non-resident parents or family. The part they play is to put into practice agreements that have been made elsewhere, e.g. in family mediation, via solicitors, or the family courts. SAFE JOURNEY Now that the weather is really summery, everyone is rushing to their local garden centres, garden shows and nurseries to stock up on new plants for the garden. However, don’t forget to ensure that the plants you buy have a good chance of surviving, not only once they get home, but also during the journey there; it is worth taking a few very sensible precautions. Don’t take something home the day you buy it if it is too large to fit in your car. However slowly you drive, if the plant is sticking out of a sunroof or window the foliage is going to be scorched and damaged, and it is possible that a stem may be broken. Almost all garden centres now offer delivery and this is usually free of charge within a reasonable radius, so take advantage of this service. If the plant does fit in your car then remember to wrap the root ball in a black bin liner or a box, to prevent the back of your car becoming full of compost, grit etc. Always use the garden centre as the last port of call before travelling home, as in hot weather 34
temperatures increase quickly in a closed car, even with the windows or sunroof open. Under these conditions the plants can soon be boiled alive, literally! Plants in the boot should be safer for a slightly longer period of time, but you should travel straight home once you have made your purchases. If you are determined to take something home that protrudes slightly from your car, then it is essential that you wrap up anything which is sticking out really well to prevent leaf scorch and damage. Make sure that it is tied down extremely well so that it can’t blow off on the way home. Remember that anything protruding from your car could potentially cause a driving hazard to other road users, so be sensible. Even on a short journey home, plants which are exposed to exaggerated heat inside a car or the scorching effect of sunlight travelling through the car glazing can be seriously damaged, so cover them up with something to decrease the risk. It is worth taking a few old newspapers with you when you go to the garden centre, as these make perfect temporary tents. Remember that most plants prefer fairly constant
conditions, so try not to put them through too many changes in a short space of time. Ideally, take them from one area in the garden centre to somewhere similar in your garden, and keep any travelling during hot weather to a minimum. If they look at all damaged from their journey then give them a week or two to recuperate in dappled shade in a protected position in your garden.
And don’t forget that when you plant anything new in your garden, if the weather is at all dry it is worth waiting until the evening or at least late afternoon before planting. Make sure that everything is kept well watered, as this will increase the chances of the plants establishing without By Pippa Greenwood too much distress. Discover Art in the Garden Sir Harold Hillier Gardens continues to showcase over 100 exciting new sculptures for Art in the Garden's 18th year. The sculptures are made from various mediums including glass, ceramic and recycled materials.

EXPLORE THE WONDERS OF SCIENCE Winchester Science Festival will open its doors on 28th to 30th of July, to show off the best of Hampshire and World science with talks from internationally renowned scientists such as Prof. Lucy Green, Dr Sadie Jones (Univ of Southampton), Prof. Clare Grey (Univ. of Cambridge), Carrie Anne Philbin of RaspberryPi.
The youngest speaker, eighteen year old Amy Mather, will talk about how you can use science, technology, engineering and maths fused with creativity to make your future. Amy was honoured with the European Commission’s first European Digital Girl of the Year Award at the age of 13. The festival, which starts at 10am and is organised by the Winchester Science Foundation. There will be the chance to hear about the latest findings from the deepest reaches of space to the most recent developments in prosthetics. From children to grandparents, there will be fun activities that everyone can take part in.
William Vine, Festival Director, said: “Hampshire is one of the UK’s leading counties for scientific research and science industry, and we hope to see lots of Hampshire residents at the Discovery Centre. The art of display If you want to create displays of your treasured possessions that show them off, our top ten tips will help. 1. Consider what you are displaying, whether it is sturdy or fragile, valuable or everyday. Do you wish to admire it from afar or do you prefer it close to hand and perhaps picked up? You may find you can manage with a display on a mantelpiece, shelf or table top, or you can invest in a specially designed cabinet, case or stand. If you opt for specialist display furniture, choose pieces that complement the style and proportions of your home. 2. Good lighting makes all the difference. Carefully positioned ceiling-mounted spotlights are ideal, but an adjustable lamp may provide a more informal, cheaper fix for a simple domestic display. Think about where the light comes from: directly above, behind (for a dramatic silhouette) or from the front, and how ‘warm’ or ‘cool’ the bulb should be in order to enhance colour and texture. 3. Group objects together and they can be much more than the sum of their parts. A group display may consist of almost anything: a series of Delftware plates or tiles, a dozen framed silk headscarves, pebbles in graduating sizes, mirrored baubles, wooden shoe lasts, a row of modern chairs in sorbet shades…you can have great fun with almost anything you decide to gather together. 4. Displays of identical pairs of objects are probably the most simple, and often the most 54

visually powerful, of all. There’s something extremely pleasing about this mirroring and doubling, but you must ensure your objects are placed evenly and symmetrically. 5. When choosing a group of different objects to display, look for ways in which they will work together, whether by colour, size, shape, texture or proportion. It is important to have something that creates coherence and some objects may simply not fit well into the group. 6. Every time you display more than one object, you need to opt for symmetry or asymmetry. Symmetrical displays tend to appear more classical, considered and refined, and suit traditional rooms. Asymmetry, however, is ideal for making an impact in a contemporary space, and can seem more spontaneous and intuitive.

7. A great way to make an impact with a display is by showing off a single, fabulous, huge object - but ensure there is plenty of space around it in which it can ‘breathe’. 8. Small objects can look lost in most rooms, so be particularly careful about how you display them. Try to ‘frame’ them within their surroundings – maybe in a cabinet or niche, on a side table, or on a plinth rather than a long, wide shelf. 9. If displaying large groups of paintings, prints or flat objects on a wall, start by laying your potential group on the floor. Choose the piece that you wish to be most prominent, then surround it with pieces that work well alongside it. 10. Finally, stand right back - does your display need tweaking? Don’t be afraid to change things around, and try not to make the finished result overly formal or perfect. JANE AUSTEN AT WINCHESTER CATHEDRAL To commemorate the 200th anniversary on the death of Jane Austen, Winchester Cathedral is hosting events and activities celebrating the life of one of the world’s most famous authors, who was buried in the north aisle of the Cathedral on 24 July 1817. Visitors are welcome to come and learn more about this much-loved author, whose work has inspired people, generation after generation. The Jane Austen Story is a permanent exhibition, telling the story of Jane’s life in Hampshire and the final few weeks in Winchester before her death. This summer only (to the end of September), an additional exhibition will be added displaying beautiful artefacts from Jane’s life. SERVES 6
Ready in 1 hour 15 minutes plus chilling time
A crostata is an Italian lattice-topped pie which can be sweet or savoury. This one has a fruity fresh peach filling. Serve with crème fraîche or ice cream. PASTRY • 350g plain flour
• 175g butter, chilled and diced • 2 tbsp caster sugar
• 1 large egg, beaten with 2tbsp cold water FILLING • 6 peaches, halved, stones removed and thickly sliced
• 2 tbsp caster sugar • 2 tsp cornflour • Milk to glaze • Icing sugar, to dust 58
1. To make the pastry, sift the flour into a large bowl. Add the butter
and rub in with your fingertips until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar, add the egg and water, then stir with a knife until the mixture begins to stick together.
2. Gather the dough with one hand, turn out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for a few seconds until smooth. Flatten into a round, wrap in cling film and chill for 30 minutes.
3. Preheat the oven to 200C, fan 180C, gas 6. Place a baking sheet in the oven to heat up.
4. Roll out about two-thirds of the pastry on a lightly floured surface to the thickness of a one pound coin and use to line a 23cm round pie dish.
5. Toss the peaches in a bowl with the sugar and cornflour then pile
into the pastry case. Roll out the rest of the pastry to a 20cm circle and use a lattice pastry roller to cut slashes in the pastry (see tip).
6. Brush around the edge of the pastry case with a little water then
drape the pastry circle over the filling, pulling it gently to create the lattice effect. Press the pastry edges together to seal and trim off any excess pastry.
7. Glaze the pastry with milk, then place on the hot baking sheet in the oven and bake for 35-45 minutes until the pastry is crisp and golden. Serve warm or cold, dusted with icing sugar.

The Million Pound Tax Project.? Back in the summer of 2015, the news that inheritance tax allowances would rise to £1 million hit the headlines. Now the new legislation has been implemented, Eric Robinson Solicitors’ Head of Wills, Trusts & Succession, Emily Taylor, explains why things aren’t quite that simple. In April 2017 we saw the long awaited arrival of the government’s new inheritance tax initiative. Entitled ‘The Residential Nil Rate Band’ or ‘RNRB’, the new legislation is the first step to achieving a record £1 million personal allowance for inheritance tax, but there is plenty of maths to do first. We start from the point of every individual’s inheritance tax allowance which is £325,000. This allowance can be transferred to a surviving spouse after the loss of their partner, making an allowance of £650,000 for the widow or widower. Now, under the RNRB, if a person leaves a residential property to lineal descendants there will be an additional allowance of £100,000. This will rise to £125,000 in April 2018, then £150,000 in 2019 and finally, £175,000 in 2020. If that final figure in 2020 is doubled through a transfer between a married couple, hey presto! We’ve reached the £1 million allowance.
To qualify, the property must have been the home where the taxpayer lived and be left to lineal descendants, which includes natural, adopted, step and foster children and, in certain circumstances, grandchildren. So this all looks pretty good, doesn’t it? Well, looks can be deceiving. There has been much apprehension in the legal profession and questions over how well the legislation has been thought through. For example, whilst the UK is dealing with increasing pressure from a growing housing crisis, concern was raised over older people choosing to stay in large houses alone in order to claim the tax advantages. The government had to respond with a ‘down-sizing calculation’ that means they can keep the allowance and move out. This is just one of a variety of complications that will arise from individual circumstances, but we have made sure the team at Eric Robinson Solicitors is fully trained and up to date with every development for when clients decide to review their Wills in light of the new changes. There is no doubt the RNRB was introduced for political points, and there are those that suggest any opposition that might gain power in 2020 will immediately abolish it, but while we have the allowance, it would be foolish for people who qualify not to take advantage.

HAMPSHIRE MUSIC AND FOOD FESTIVAL IS BACK! Graze Festival returns on the 27 August with a stronger line-up than ever.
Headlining the event will be one of Britain’s most successful hip hop acts, Stereo MC’s. They are known for their enthusiasm on stage and their irresistible dance anthems. The group have created over ten full albums with major singles hits like “Step it Up. The festival will also welcome fellow headliners Republica, a band best known for their hit single "Ready to Go". Third on the bill will be Twyford’s favourite funk/soul outfit, Agency.
The day will be filled with a huge variety of performers throughout the course of the day. The two main stages will be home to twelve different acts, including Sussex’s alternative-folk band Noble Jacks. After yet another day at the coalface, it was time to plonk myself down in front of the tube with my standard issue tea and biccies. Eschewing Bradley Walsh’s faux hilarity, I flicked over to observe another presenter’s plummy commiserations with a pair of unlucky celebrities. “Alexander Armstrong has a way with people, don’t you think?” I glanced over at Sarah (My Dearly Beloved) who was busily ensconced in a pile of glossy magazines. Immediately, my blood froze. My wife was ‘browsing for ideas’, a catchall phrase that indicated she was on the hunt for a walletsqueezing Big Ticket Item. Without looking up Sarah said, “That’s right Tom, I’m choosing a last minute holiday. What are you doing with the remote?” “I’m trying to find Ceefax.”
“Ceefax? Tom, in case you hadn’t noticed this isn’t 1994. I’ve heard Hurghada is nice.” “Is that in Wales?” I asked hopefully.
And so the following morning we trundled down the precinct to the local travel agent. Once through the glass doors Sarah searched for a representative whilst I sniffed the air. “What’s that funny smell?” “Coconut sunscreen. It’s to put you in the holiday mood.” “It smells like a massage parlour.” “And how would you know?”
A change of subject being required, I made eye contact with a lady sporting an azure blue uniform. 76
I plonked myself down and, fingering the reams of brochures, gasped, “Take me away from all of this madness.” Nonplussed, the woman turned to Sarah for help. “Ignore my husband, he is a child. We are after a week or ten day break. Don’t care where, as long as it’s hot.” “Europe, or further afield?” “Don’t mind.”
“Well, we have some great deals at the moment for Vietnam.”
I gripped Sarah’s arm. “Honey, I ain’t going back to Vietnam - you weren’t there man.” Another puzzled look. Sighing, Sarah pressed onwards. “How about Cancun? I hear it’s very nice.”
“Yes, we have some excellent deals for Mexico.”
“Do you do bed and breakfast?” A kick from Sarah. “Bed and breakfast? In Mexico? No sir, it’s usually all-inclusive.” “Which means?”
“Everything is pre-paid, so all your food and drink is included. And your entertainment. Now this resort I can vouch for, I went last year. I had such a laugh - the barman was pouring us shots all night and then we saw a fantastic Rod Stewart.” Without so much as a glance in the direction of yours truly, Sarah, in an exasperated tone, said, “No, that won’t be suitable.”
Undeterred, our azure blue travel counsellor whisked us away to another equally exotic continent - we were about to embark upon an imaginary trip to the Nile Delta. “Now, what about Egypt?”
My mind raced to a balmy evening standing awestruck in the Valley of the Kings.

“That sounds just like the place where Uncle Billy spent that fortnight.” “Where was that, sir? Hurghada?”

Two days later we were packed and ready to go. The hand luggage safely in the boot of the Mondeo, a less than impressed Sarah sat sulking in the passenger seat. “Look, it’s inexpensive, easy to get to, by the sea and warm - it’s the Gulf Stream you see.”
“Yes Tom, but I was hoping we’d be in the actual Gulf.”
“Well we are nearer - well a bit nearer anyway. Come on, get in. Llandudno here we come! I can’t wait to get up the Great Orme, can you? “Tom, you know how to treat a girl, don’t you?”

PADDLEBOARDING IN A PICANTO To prove just how practical its new city car can be, Kia challenged James Baggott to tackle the Italian coast on a paddleboard. It’s all too easy to pigeonhole cars like the Kia Picanto as city centre shopping carts, fit for nothing more than a quick trip to the supermarket. While it might be true that the Korean car firm’s baby has traditionally been bought by grandparents and students, it’s an image the brand is desperately hoping it can shed. This is the third generation of Kia’s second bestselling UK car and with it comes more aggressive looks, a sharper driving style and clever technology aimed at helping it appeal to a far broader spectrum of buyers.
That’s why I find myself on a paddle-boarding adventure in Italy: to prove the new Picanto’s versatility, Kia has invited us to the Toscana coastline, crammed two blow-up paddleboards, wet suits and a picnic in the back of one of their latest city cars and pointed us towards the coast. Costing from just £9,450, the Picanto now boasts more passenger and luggage space but with no overall increase in size over the previous model. Inside there’s a 25 per cent increase in luggage space, topping 255 litres with the rear seats up and 1,010 litres with them down.
That extra carrying capacity certainly comes in handy. The two giant paddleboards, overnight bags for two and accessories are easily swallowed in the boot, with space left over. There’s a choice of engines in the new model. Our test vehicle – in ‘2’ specification – features the 1.0 litre 66bhp unit. But there’s also a 1.25 litre 83bhp option and a 1.0 litre turbocharged option. Even the lowest output unit gets the city car to 60mph in 13.8 seconds and gives a top speed of 100mph, 84
while sipping fuel at a miserly 64.2mpg rate on the combined cycle. Crossing the rich, lush green vine-covered Italian countryside near Grosseto as we attempt to find the beach, the Picanto’s light steering and peppy engine impresses, as does its ability to soak up potholes you’d fear would otherwise swallow it. As we approach the beach, the asphalt crumbles away and the Picanto skips between giant holes littering the sand-covered track to the water. After an hour’s paddleboarding followed by some impromptu surfing, there’s time to play with the kit while drying off in the supportive front seats of the Kia. It’s functional not flashy inside, and despite the smaller screen for the multimedia system on this mid-range ‘2’, it still works well with your phone, streaming Spotify perfectly. There’s air conditioning, electric front and rear windows, heated door mirrors and a leather trimmed steering wheel; that’s on top of the standard options, which include remote central locking, USB and AUX ports, electronic stability control and automatic emergency braking.
Kia has certainly moved its Picanto on in leaps and bounds from its predecessor. On the road it’s sharper to drive, quieter and more sporty than ever before. Its new technology – which on higher specification models even includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto – is impressive, while it’s a comfortable car to spend time in. What’s more, it’s always satisfying to know that even though it’s a car unlikely to shed that blue rinse stereotype, if you are a more adventurous owner it can cope admirably with all the kit you’ll need to escape city life. If It Appreciates, Buy It; If It Depreciates, Lease It Those wise words were said by oil tycoon John Paul Getty: a man who knew something about looking after money. And he’s right. Especially when it comes to cars. If you have half-million plus to buy a Ferrari Dino 246 GTS then, I say, you are wise to make that purchase. For next year you might make £100,000 when you sell it. But if you only have £10,000 to buy a Fiat 500 then I reckon, fun car as it is (I’ve got one), you are mad. Two cars from the same company at polar opposites on the pay-scale, but I advise you to buy the expensive one. For the 500, and any other
mass-market car, I advise leasing every time. Manufacturers and dealers are desperate to shift cars so deals on new ones are phenomenal. When I bought the aforementioned 500 for my daughters, after the “deposit contribution”, the service package, the low RFL fee and the Fiat-backed lease deal were factored in the monthly payments were cheaper than if I had bought a two year old model with 20,000 miles on the clock. Plus I’ve an extra two years before the MOT is due. You get no discounts for cash either. Dealers sell the finance options because they get commission and the repayment risk is passed to the finance firm. A win-win for them. So, keep your money in the bank instead of watching it drain away on what you spend on that car. Mr Getty was right. Collectable cars go up in value, so buy, buy, buy. Blissfields has become a little gem on the festival circuit and whilst it’s never going to be a Reading, Glastonbury or Isle of Wight sized event, it has pulled loads of established names in the past such as Bastille and Mumford and Sons. An illicit journey to the Hidden Hedge at night – a party in its own right - is a must to sample the bohemian delights of fire dancers, acrobats and trapeze artists. A wonderful festival experience on a smaller scale. Headliners are not the famous charttoppers (and the reasonable ticket prices reflect this) but be assured there are some outstanding acts to see.
