Hello Fareham & Titchfield Residents! Discover isn’t new but it is new to you. We’ve been successfully publishing local community magazines for 15 years, providing local businesses an affordable and effective platform on which to advertise their company. Discover Fareham & Titchfield is just one of 25 areas we deliver to every other month. They advertise in Discover to be ‘discovered’; to be noticed, remembered and chosen by you, our readers when needed and wanted. In fact, by advertising, they’ve brought you this free magazine to enjoy and keep and turn to when you are looking for a plumber or dog walker or fancy a new kitchen fitted. We just package it up nicely, so you keep it, read it and use it!

At Discover, we do things differently; editorial will always be 40%-50% of per copy. In this issue we’ve included lots of local community stories, professionally written articles on a range of subjects plus an exclusive interview with Steve Harley of Cockney Rebel fame who is performing locally in April. We hope you find something of interest to do in the ‘What’s On’ or if heading to Southampton, try one of the restaurants a city centre resident, has picked out for us to share.

What is the Difference Between a Magazine and a Directory? This isn’t a trick question or a joke but when we looked at other publications going through letterboxes in the Solent area, we were amazed at how little editorial is included. With page after page of adverts, a publication ceases to be a readable

Sad Farewell You could go online, we know… but maybe you spend enough time staring at a screen and a good old fashioned, handy sized magazine makes a pleasant change. You may have received The Loop magazine (it is a magazine as it had editorial!) but it has gone out of print and only available to advertisers online since last month. I spoke to a number of local businesses who used them to advertise and they just couldn’t understand the decision and liked what we offered; so now you’ll find them in Discover.

We’re Here to Serve You! Being new to local businesses, many don’t know us yet. With more advertisers we can bring you even more interesting articles, news and community content in future issues; we’ve got lots of ideas such as ‘Discover My Story’, ‘Champion Your Charity’, ‘Discover Your Voice’, ‘Discover Young Talent’ and ‘Discover Local People’. If you have something you’d like to share with your community and want others to know or you’re organising an event and need help to promote it, please get in touch … we’re here to serve the readers and the local businesses and make connections along the way!

STEVE HARLEY

TALKS TO DISCOVER by Sarah Reilly, Discover Magazines

Steve Harley is best known as the front man of the legendary rock group Cockney Rebel. Their 1975 single ‘Make Me Smile (Come Up and See Me)’ reached No. 1 in the UK and many European countries and is one of the most frequently played tracks in the world. When I chatted to him recently, he told me about what he now listens to (whatever his wife puts on the radio in the car) and his love of theatre (one of his favourite playwrights is Samuel Beckett). It’s clear that he is passionate about what he does and has always loved to perform. In fact, despite taking a break during the 80’s, he has toured regularly since those early days. Just released is a very special album from the newly inaugurated Steve Harley Acoustic Band. ‘Uncovered’ includes interpretations of nine painstakingly chosen songs created in many instances by peers and contemporaries of Steve, those with shared histories and some that he admired from afar. These are songs with heft and honesty that have always connected and resonated within him, this is material that he’s always wanted to perform and may even wish he’d written. This diverse collection of Harley’s Interpretations is in some ways an almanac rather than just a set of great tracks: Steve’s links with some of the songwriters go back to the very start of their careers: Bowie in Beckenham; Dylan throughout his early teens; Cat Stevens/Yusuf and Paul McCartney, both massive early influences. Added into the mix are two songs from Steve’s own incredible catalogue, reworked from the originals, ‘Love, Compared With You’ which now boasts a newly-composed third verse, plus ‘Only You’, played live for several years, but recorded here for the first time.

8

The band that performs this collection features Barry Wickens on viola, violin and acoustic guitar, Oli Hayhurst on double bass, Tom Hooper on percussion and the Roots Music Legend, Martin Simpson, on guitar (for the live dates, David Delarre will be on lead guitar). Steve also sings a duet with the amazing Scottish singer, Eddi Reader on ‘Star of Belle Isle’ plus a beautiful, stirring acoustic solo from the legendary Jim Cregan on the Errol Brown-penned track, ‘Emma’. Steve says, “I was roaring with stamina and passion when I went in to sing the final versions. Sang all 11 in one and a half days. The hunger and desire to perform was almost primitive. Matt Butler (engineer) has recorded my voice up close and unaffected. I sing out - but seem mostly restrained.” Audiophile alert: It’s worth mentioning that this might be the first album we have ever heard that has absolutely no EQ (equalisation) – the recordings are totally organic, absolutely natural, no effects. Whilst this collection is largely a celebration of other writers, Steve’s own talent cannot be overstated, both with regards to his interpretation of the works featured on ‘Uncovered’ but also of course his own tracks that feature. Rod Stewart, who covered Steve’s song “A Friend for Life”, describes him as “One of the finest lyricists Britain has produced.” MOJO magazine said simply, “Harley creates rock songs that are proud, lyrical and full of yearning.” Steve has also been described as “A consummate performer at the top of his game”, and this stunning collection of beautiful, heartfelt songs will bear that out. Steve will be performing at The New Theatre Royal, Portsmouth on 14 April.

Namib Desert West of the Kalahari and the Great Escarpment, the Namib stretches 1,500 km along Namibia’s Atlantic coast and 80 to 160 km inland. This is the oldest desert in the world (some say over 55 million years old), an ‘open space’ that gave its name to Namibia. It’s nature in the raw, a mythical land claiming some of the highest dunes on the planet and laced with river beds, briefly flooded every five or six years but usually bone dry. Hot and arid, it may seem a desolate place, yet about a hundred days a year the ocean fog drifts in, bringing life-giving moisture to a few acacia trees. Plants pop up here and there: spiky melon, dollar bush – so called for its shape – and the resilient mirabilis with just two very long leaves, which can live for

14

over 2,000 years. Fauna includes small geckos and lizards, white ants found nowhere else on earth, rodents, a few springbok and the amazing desert elephants able to survive four to five days without water. Equally welladapted is the beautiful Oryx gazelle, often wandering on its own with long straight horns silhouetted against sand and sky. In the Namib-Naukluft National Park, the ‘Sea of Sand’ is a world heritage site and for nature lovers the most spectacular attraction, just beyond the dramatic canyon of Sesriem. The park opens in time for sunrise and as you start the 60 km drive across the legendary Sossusvlei area the desert takes your breath away, dazzling colours from orange and gold to red and pink, spooky shadows, blinding light and clumps of wild sage glowing luminous green. Crowds climb up the iconic Dune 45, seen on every postcard but close to the tarmac and a mere 170 metres high. Number 45 refers to the distance from the park’s entrance, but for real adventurers it all begins at the end of the road.

First it’s a 4x4 safari ride, 5 km or so bouncing on a track, then shuffling through the sand to the base of ‘Big Daddy’, the highest dune in the area beckoning at a whopping 325 metres. Ready to climb? Not easy as you crawl up the narrow ridge, no track, only footprints ahead of you, shifting precariously as you attempt to anchor your heels. It’s blazing hot but the views are gorgeous all along the crest, even if you don’t get to the top. For without the slightest warning, a mighty sandstorm might arise, forcing you to slide down to safety as fast as you can on the steepest side. You land in the Deadvlei, a long-dried up marsh now a white clay pan, dotted with the skeletons of camelthorn trees, dead for hundreds of years, never decomposed but scorched by the sun. Yet just as awesome are the mighty dunes rolling along the Skeleton Coast, scattered with shipwrecks and mostly inaccessible – though wonderful views can be enjoyed on a propeller flight, skimming right across the desert in a vast surreal landscape of everchanging shapes and colours.

A classic strudel with home-made pastry can take a long time to make, but using a convenient pack of ready- rolled pastry means you can have a delicious fruity pudding on the table in less than an hour!

 Brickwork

2 large dessert apples, peeled, cored and chopped

Preheat the oven to 200C / 180C fan / gas mark 6. Line a baking sheet with baking paper.

 Groundworks

50g raisins or sultanas

Place the apples and raisins or sultanas in a bowl. Mix together the cornflour, sugar and spice and add to the apples, tossing to coat.

1 tbsp cornflour

 Blockpaving & Tarmac Surfaces

50g caster sugar 2 tsp ground mixed spice 320g pack ready-rolled shortcrust or puff pastry

 Drop Kerbs

Beaten egg, to glaze

 Drives - Patios

Icing sugar, to dust Whipped cream, custard and fresh berries, to serve

 Fencing 16

TIP Take care when rolling up the pastry and seal the edges by brushing with some of the beaten egg. 52

Unroll the pastry but keep it on the paper. Using a rolling pin, gently roll the pastry a little thinner. With one long side facing you, spoon the apple mixture along the length, leaving a 2cm border at the edges. Gently roll up the pastry to enclose the filling and fold the pastry in at the ends (see Tip). Place seam-side down on the baking sheet. Brush all over with beaten egg. Bake for 30-35 minutes until the pastry is crisp and golden. Leave to stand for 10 minutes. Dust with icing sugar and serve sliced with whipped cream, custard and fresh berries. 17

NOT THE FINAL CURTAIN FOR FERNEHAM HALL It’s an extended intermission! Fareham’s Ferneham Hall has closed for two years to make way for a major remodelling project. The closure sets the ball rolling on an exciting vision to create a blockbusting new community, arts and entertainment venue for the town, offering something for everyone. This new image released by Fareham Council is a bird’s eye view of what the new Ferneham Hall will look like. Ferneham Hall was first opened in 1982 and has been looking tired and dated. The £12.35m investment from the Council will see it totally transformed with improved seating in the main auditorium, a secondary performance space, new bar and café area, a dance studio and space for community groups and organisations. Cllr Sue Bell, Fareham Council’s Executive Member for Leisure and Community says: “This is the beginning of an exciting project to deliver a fantastic new facility which Fareham can be proud of. The new venue will be a hub of activity with space for community groups, cinema screenings, a dance studio, clubs, exhibitions and conferences. I’m looking forward to seeing how the transformation progresses in the coming months.” When the replacement venue opens, it will be managed by BH Live on the Council’s behalf.

Local Talent My name is Janette Evans and I live in Titchfield Village. I moved here in 2010 from Southsea and last year I gave up teaching after 35 years to act in various shows for Titchfield Festival Theatre, who gave me the opportunity to explore a side of me I thought would never be possible. I joined the TFT playwriting group and started to write some short plays, some of which were performed last year. I also joined Solent Writers and wrote some short stories, which I really enjoyed. The youth theatre at TFT asked me to write a Sherlock Holmes full-length play, which was a great experience and was performed last October. Just before giving up teaching, a long-term friend became ill and

The Last Secret, a full-length play, started its journey, about a group of women of a ‘certain age’. Rehearsals started in November 2019 and I was very lucky to have such a fabulous cast of talented and experienced women. I directed my play and it was incredible to see my words take shape and come alive. Set in Lee on Solent, many of the audiences could laugh at the local references. The play also covers universal issues that most people could relate to. It was a privilege to see members of the audience laughing out loud at one moment, gasping at another and reduced to tears at times. I cannot thank Titchfield Festival Theatre enough for the support and opportunity and, in particular, the cast of The Last Secret, plus Kevin Fraser, the artistic director of TFT. Janette Evans

FAREHAM VOTED 2nd BEST PLACE TO LIVE Fareham has been voted second-best in the UK for quality of life in this year’s annual of life survey by banking giant Halifax. The survey looked at factors like employment, earnings, housing affordability, health and wellbeing, education, traffic and crime rates. With a population close to 120,000, Fareham is described as a place with vibrant community life, picturesque views and it is within easy reach of the beach and the River Hamble. Perfectly placed on a picturesque coastline, Fareham provides an opportunity to explore a rich heritage of both maritime and national history, peaceful woodland walks, conservation areas plus an attractive and safe coastline. It has a history reaching far beyond Roman times and the town has a variety of interests for everyone. Fewer than 80 miles by road from London, with easy access by coach and train, 18

Southampton, Portsmouth and Isle of Wight ferry ports are also within easy reach. The Fareham Shopping Centre cost £10 million in 1976 and is now home to 84 shops, cafes and restaurants. But it never stands still. The council is aiming to meet new national housing targets, identify new housing sites and look at potential areas for strategic growth. Beaten to the top place by East Hertfordshire, it did well up against places like Hart, Horsham, Wokingham, Ryedale and many others. 19

My Story My name is Shelley and I’m the founder of The Cleaning Lady, Fareham. One of my first childhood memories is helping my nanna to clean her kitchen floor and later I would clean with my mum. Dad was very tidy, my grampy was the messy one, but we all loved him for it, after all, it gave us something to do. My whole life I have found solace in cleaning. If you’re stressed, polish the woodwork, if you’re angry, scrub the oven, if you’re sad, clean the windows and let the light in, plump some pillows and always start the day by making your bed. I never thought of it as a career, but after my dad died, I was depressed, so I did the only thing I knew to feel human again and that was to clean. I cleaned my house, a neighbour’s house, then in May 2016, I posted on social media and within a month I was working a 6 day week, 12 hours a day, using my ebike to cycle between Fareham, Gosport and Titchfield. When customers could no longer afford it, I gave away cleaning to people who needed it most and used my profits to cover the cost of the wages, products, tools, training, fuel and insurance. 20 months later and I now employ 12 team members, all trained professionals with kind souls and big hearts and last year we donated over 100 hours of free cleaning back into the community. Anyone can book or donate a clean. www.thecleaningladyfareham.co.uk.

misery and this negatively affects our well-being, self-esteem and self-confidence. Other treatments may be effective, but these can be expensive and hard to access. Vulnerable people who can’t speak up for themselves or engage fully in their own care may suffer. Some patients may choose not to consult the doctor, and serious diagnoses may be missed. Lifestyle interventions such as weight loss are beneficial for numerous medical conditions. However, weight loss is difficult and takes time. The Royal College of Physicians has recently declared obesity a disease, not just a lifestyle factor.

Moles (benign), simple cysts, warts, verrucas and varicose veins – to name but a few – are all on the list of treatments no longer covered. Now, however unsightly, embarrassing or irritating, the NHS is no longer responsible. Cash-strapped, and hard-pressed, the NHS is continually struggling to maintain an excellent quality of service and to balance the books. Consequently, management teams are regularly analysing the numbers and type of medical procedures, their success and complication rates and considering whether these interventions offer value for money. How and Who Decides? On behalf of the NHS, The National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) is a robust body that reviews all the available medical evidence about NHS treatments and interventions. By law, if NICE recommends it, the NHS must provide it, but otherwise the NHS has no obligation. Inappropriate Interventions NICE has concluded some treatments are not effective and may even be harmful. For example, surgery to improve snoring carries risks: bleeding, infection, voice changes and swallowing problems. The cure rate from surgery is only 46%. Yet losing weight and stopping smoking is just as effective. A Bitter Response Nobody wants any harm, risk or wasteful spending, but are we being hoodwinked? What can a parent now do for a child with glue ear or tonisillitis? Doctors themselves are concerned. In a recent BMA survey, 75% of doctors said they believed that financial targets were overriding patient care. The Negative Consequences These conditions may be benign, but they still cause 18 22

A canine crew are helping to sooth nerves of fliers before they jet off from Southampton International Airport.

The airport has taken on the four legged helpers and The Canine Crew – a pack of therapy dogs from the charity Therapy Dogs Nationwide, will be stationed at arrivals and departures along with their volunteer handlers.

QUARTZ

Having trialled the initiative in 2019 on a temporary basis, the furry faced employees will be a semi-permanent fixture at the airport and will be on patrol once a week. On a mission to help soothe nervous fliers and passengers with hidden disabilities, the therapy dogs are fully temperament tested and highly experienced in their trade.

GRANITE MARBLE

Commenting on the launch of Canine Crew, Simon Young, Head of Passenger Operations, said: “Having therapy dogs in our airport will not only benefit our passengers but also our staff. Fourlegged companions are well known for boosting general happiness and wellbeing as well as mood and we are very excited to welcome them to the Southampton Airport family.

Our sister airport in Aberdeen was the first in the country to trial airport therapy dogs and we are happy to be carrying on that legacy.” Paulette Hockley, Placement Officer at Therapy 5

Dogs Nationwide, added: “We are very privileged to have passionate volunteers who keep our charity running by taking their own dogs into establishments to give comfort, distraction and stimulation. We are looking forward to working with Southampton Airport and sharing the benefits of Animal Assisted Therapy with both passengers and team members.” The Launch of Southampton Airport’s Canine Crew coincided with a charity collection for national pet charity, Blue Cross, which has a re-homing centre in West End. Southampton Airport will also feature a Southampton Blue Cross Rescue Dog of the Week on its social media channels to encourage re-homing of dogs at the animal charity. Speaking about the partnership, Kirsty Smith, Rehoming Supervisor at Blue Cross Southampton, said: “We see every day how incredible pets are and how much of a benefit they bring to our lives; through the joy they bring and often helping alleviate our stress and worry in difficult situations. We’re thrilled to be a part of the Canine Crew campaign and what a wonderful way to help get homeless dogs loving new homes – some of our rescues even go on to be therapy dogs themselves! All donations will go towards helping us give a better life to homeless pets whilst we try to find them new families.” 33 25

Seabin To Catch Floating Litter

Groundbreaking plastic pollution busting technology is being used in tackling maritime litter. A Seabin is being installed at the North East corner of Ocean Village Marina to collect floating rubbish along Southampton Water, moving up and down with the tide. It will catch floating litter like plastic bottles and can collect up to 1.4 tons of litter each year – the equivalent of 90,000 plastic bags or 35,700 disposable cups.

Rough Sleepers In Fareham FBC has been awarded £141,450 to employ two outreach workers who complement the service already provided in Fareham and Gosport. These posts have made a significant difference to the level of support provided to rough sleepers and have been key in helping some of them make a move into more permanent homes. The new posts will focus particularly on helping those leaving prison and with complex needs such as substance misuse issues, mental health needs and behavioural challenges, to find and maintain suitable accommodation. It comes a time when the council has introduced security guards to tackle antisocial behaviour. The security team carries leaflets to hand out to rough sleepers that provides information for them about where they can go to get help. This approach has worked well in other areas and the early indications are that this is a positive move. Anti-social behaviour is already decreasing whilst rough sleepers are engaging more with the services that are there to help them.

Fareham MP Lands Top Job For Boris Fareham MP, Suella Braverman, has landed a top job in Boris Johnson’s dramatic Cabinet reshuffle as chief legal advisor. The 39-year-old lawyer and former Brexit minister has been appointed Attorney General, taking over from Geoffrey Cox QC. She won the Fareham constituency, which includes Portchester, Lock’s Heath, Warsash and Titchfield, in 2015 and has soared through the ministerial ranks. She previously had stints in the Education

She also chaired the European Research Group from 19 June 2017 to 9 January 2018. Born and raised in north-west London, Mrs Braverman’s parents moved to the UK in the 1960’s from Kenya and Mauritius. After studying law at Cambridge University, the Sorbonne and New York City University, she then trained as a barrister in London, specialising in planning, judicial review and immigration cases, and was appointed to the attorney general’s Treasury panel and represented the government in hearings. Rapidly promoted to ministerial positions, she began as parliamentary private secretary to Treasury ministers before becoming a junior minister at the former Department for Exiting the EU. Mrs Braverman said she was honoured to be appointed as Attorney General for England and Wales and was looking forward to working with the many excellent government lawyers and officials.

These Are The Cars To Look Out For In 2020

Performance Car Audi RS6 The new RS6 is more powerful than before while being sharper and more engaging to drive. It’s no less practical, however, and it looks great.

We take a look at the most exciting cars by class due to arrive this year… As attention continues to be focused squarely on electrification, autonomy and tech-heavy cars, there’s a lot of fresh metal arriving on the market. Here, we take a look at the cars in each class that have us most intrigued.

Pick-up Jeep Gladiator Essentially a five-seater pickup version of the Wrangler, it’s expected that the Gladiator will factor into Jeep’s European strategy during 2020.

30

MPV Mercedes EQV Moving forward from the EQC SUV, the EQV is an electric van, likely to be one of a number of electrified Mercedes vehicles due to arrive in 2020.

Hatchback Volkswagen Golf Mk8 The MK8 comes to market with a fresh new look and more interior tech. There’s a cleaner, more efficient range of engines, too. Though we’ve yet to see it in full, expect a go-faster GTI to arrive in 2020 as well.

Crossover Ford Puma This funky-looking machine packs some clever technology under its skin. Mild-hybrid powertrains feature in a bid to improve efficiency, while a ‘MegaBox’ compartment in the boot is on hand to maximise practicality.

SUV Land Rover Defender The Defender will have a variety of specifications and wheelbase choices, as well as engines. There’s going to be a hybrid version too – so there’s an option for those people who want the cleanest version of the Defender available.

Estate Skoda Superb iV Building on the supremely practical Czech estate, this has a 1.4-litre petrol engine linked up to an 85kW motor, allowing for a claimed electric-only range of 34 miles.
