Walk at Mottisfont There is a palette of incredible colour waiting to be discovered across Hampshire landscapes. Towering canopies of golden foliage appear in beech woods, and chalk streams wind their way through expanses of russet heathland and marshes.
There are a number of walks to enjoy around Mottisfont but a good one for autumn is the six mile Estate Walk. You’ll be taken through a number of different landscapes, from woodlands and historic farmland to the banks of the famous river Test chalk stream.
Aside from the impressive yellows and reds of sweet chestnut and beech foliage, the woods are also home to plenty of fungi in autumn, including the pretty lilac-purple amethyst deceiver. back on the treadmill Autumn is here and it’s the return of routine and addressing the waistline. So often I read and hear that one should exercise more to lose weight. I do exercise regularly, but (sadly) it has never helped me lose weight in itself. I don’t believe that an hour’s activity burns enough calories to offset overeating. What it does do though is a) motivate you to eat a bit less in the pursuit of health and b) tones your muscles and c) improves your mental health and wellbeing. The real key though has to be taking up an exercise which you enjoy – if it’s a chore, you just won’t do it. Cycling is a form of leisure
and sport which is hugely popular with every age and our feature on page 18 will hopefully inspire you to consider starting or taking it up again if you have lapsed. Also, on page 9 there is an advert for Zumba Strong being held at Mountbatten School. Now you might be thinking “that’s not for me, I have two left feet”. But it’s nothing like that - the ‘Zumba’ part is simply the company behind the classes. This is more about interval training to music and it’s an exhausting but fun hour for both men and women (I can personally recommend it!) Or if that’s all too much, start with a walk from Mottisfont (p3) or at the New Forest Walking Festival (42).

Beer Festival The local volunteers responsible for the Santa Sleigh at Christmas each year are bringing a Beer Festival on to Romsey on the 28th October
The first ever Romsey Round Table Beer Festival will have a fantastic selection of more than 20 locally brewed beers and ciders, as well as a Prosecco Bar, and when hunger calls, freshly baked pizzas will also be available. INVESTMENT TO INCREASE SUPERFAST BROADBAND ACCESS Hampshire County Council (HCC) has invested £1 million in to a scheme to help more difficult-toreach communities benefit from superfast broadband.
The Community Match Funding scheme applies to locations which will not be covered by the Hampshire Superfast Broadband programme, which is already on track to provide 97.4% of the county with superfast broadband access by 2019. The County Council will provide up to half of the funding to match money raised by communities, to help connect the remaining 2.6%.
Leader of HCC, Councillor Roy Perry, said: “Good broadband access is fundamental - people rely on the internet every day, whether it’s for banking and shopping, or learning and working from home. Not only is it vital for the economy of Hampshire, it is also an effective way of delivering modern and accessible public services. Leaning wearily against the dart board in the back room of the Horse and Jockey, Ron waited for his crew to settle down. He’d been tempted out of retirement for one last job. He never could say no to the persuasive charms of Clarice. She was sitting to his right, legs crossed, a spiral note book between her perfectly manicured fingers. Their eyes met briefly, she smiled, and he knew just what she was thinking. The job was just twelve hours away and these assembled young bloods had adrenalin coursing through their veins. He had to get them focussed. There could be no repeat of last year’s carnage. He still hadn’t fully recovered. If he closed his eyes he could still see it all - the chaos, the confusion. They’d not bargained on the urn - it was a wild card that had cost them dearly. This time, he vowed, they would not make the same mistake. He shrewdly observed each member of the team, assessing their strengths. By the door was Joe the Crow, army background, good with crowd control. Joe’s missus, Dolores, leaned against the pool table. A dental nurse in a former life, she was known around these circles for being good at mopping up, should the situation arise. And it almost always did, Ron thought ruefully.
Wendell Wright, perched on a bar stool, was the money man. Though new to this game, he came highly recommended. He’d count up what they’d made on the other side, if, of course, they made anything. And, finally, the charming Clarice. She was Ron’s eyes and ears, but, more importantly, she had access to the keys.
“Let’s begin,” Ron said finally. “We know why we’re 10
“We won’t let you down Ron,” Dolores pouted.
Ron bristled, though he suspected that word had got round.
“Okay, so listen up and listen up good.” Ron raised himself to his full height. “Clarice, what time can you get hold of the key?” “Half eight,” Clarice said.
“I need you on the ground then,” Ron said. “Can you do it?”
Clarice nodded.
“And the rest of you,” Ron said, “in position by nine prompt.”
He turned to each of them.
“Dolores, I want you behind the counter with Clarice. Joe, you’re on the door. And Wendell, keep your eyes on the cash at all times.” Wendell nodded. “What about you Ron?” Dolores asked.
“I think we all know.” Ron had to say it; it was the elephant in the room. “I’ll be responsible for the urn.”
He looked at his crew and they looked back with awe and respect. He could feel their faith in him; he just wished he could feel it in himself. “Is it the same urn as,” Dolores’s voice was almost a whisper, “…last year?” Ron nodded gravely.
“I’ve heard reports that it’s got worse,” Joe added warily.
This was the worst possible news. It felt to Ron as though all the air had been sucked out of the room. Wendell slowly raised his hand.
“Shall I bring my own kettle as back up?” he asked. “Just in case?” “Perhaps it would be better if we all brought one?” Dolores said.
“I’ll bring the one from our caravan too.” Clarice made a note in her book. “There’s no way I’m relying on that dreadful church hall tea urn again.” Ron felt a great weight lifting off his shoulders. Maybe, just maybe, this year’s Over Sixties Club coffee morning would go without a hitch after all.

chilled orange mousse with fresh orange glaze
SERVES 8 Ready in 1 hour, plus cooling & chilling
A light, creamy and refreshing dessert that can be prepared a day in advance. Serve with crisp butter biscuits or shortbread fingers. FOR THE MOUSSE
• 3 gelatine leaves • 150ml fresh orange juice • 250g ricotta cheese • 250g full fat soft cheese • 100g caster sugar • 2 tsp orange zest • 300ml double cream • 2 egg whites FOR THE ORANGE GLAZE
• 1 gelatine leaf • 150ml fresh orange juice • 2 oranges, peeled, segmented and flesh chopped • Fresh mint sprigs, to decorate 12
1. Soak the gelatine leaves in a shallow bowl of cold water for 5 minutes until soft. Heat the orange juice in a small pan until almost boiling then remove from the heat. Squeeze the excess liquid from the gelatine leaves and stir into the hot juice until dissolved. Cool for 15 minutes.
2. Beat the ricotta and cream cheese together in a large bowl until
smooth, then beat in the caster sugar and orange zest. Fold in the cooled gelatine.
3. Whip the cream in a bowl until softly peaking and in a separate
bowl whisk the egg whites until stiff. Fold the cream into the orange mixture followed by the egg whites.
4. Spoon the mixture into a 20cm square baking dish that is at least 5cm deep. Gently level the surface and chill in the fridge for 3 hours, or until set.
5. To make the orange glaze, soften the gelatine in cold water as in step
one. Heat the orange juice in a small pan until almost boiling then remove from the heat. Squeeze the excess liquid from the gelatine leaf and stir into the hot juice until dissolved. Cool for 30-40 minutes, stirring occasionally until beginning to thicken. Pour over the chilled mousse then top with the diced orange flesh. Chill in the fridge for 2 hours, or until the glaze has set. Serve cut into squares decorated with fresh mint sprigs.
TIP
Stir a spoonful of warmed fine-shred marmalade into the orange glaze before it cools for an extra tangy flavour.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF LONDON By Catherine Rose It is said that at Vauxhall, you can spot 6,000-year-old timbers in the Thames at low tide. But it was the Roman invasion 2,000 years ago that really put our capital on the map. The Romans built their port settlement by the Thames in 43AD. No one is certain where their name, Londinium, originated but some have suggested it is derived from the Celtic word ‘lond’ meaning ‘wild’. Londinium eventually stretched from London Wall in the north to Southwark in the south. Although the 20-foot-high wall surrounding it no longer exists, it is still possible to walk along its route, noting place names that relate to the original city gates: Ludgate, New Gate, Aldersgate, Moorgate, Bishopsgate and Aldgate. When the Romans abandoned London, the AngloSaxons moved in some two hundred years later, establishing a new settlement called Lundenwic. Crowned in the church he built, Westminster Abbey, the penultimate Anglo-Saxon king Saint Edward the Confessor (1042-1066) rebuilt the old Roman London Bridge (in wood) and erected his ‘Palace of Westminster’, today’s Houses of Parliament. After Edward’s successor, Harold, was defeated by William the Conqueror, one of the first things that William built was the Tower of London - part of a network of castles in his fortification strategy. The ‘White Tower’ remains and was a Royal residence until 1500. By now, the name London was in common use. The boundary of the city was roughly the square mile that we know as the City of London, while other areas such as Westminster were separate from it. The City of London and the City of Westminster 36
were joined by road and river routes. When Westminster gained importance as a seat of rule for royalty, Church and government, these routes began to be used regularly for State processions. In 1172, work started on London Bridge to rebuild it in stone. It took 33 years to complete the impressive 19-arched structure that lasted 600 years. St Paul’s Cathedral was built in 1200. Gothic in style, it was noted for its magnificent spire until it was unfortunately struck by lightning in 1561. The Great Plague struck London in 1665 and raged for eighteen months, killing nearly a quarter of the population. This was closely followed by the Great Fire of London in 1666, which destroyed the medieval city inside the old Roman wall, including St Paul’s. The cathedral was subsequently redesigned and rebuilt by Sir Christopher Wren as the famous building we know today. By the 1700s there had been much new building, but there was also a growing proliferation of slums. With little help and overcrowding, the poorest turned to a life of prostitution or crime. There was no sanitation, no street lights and no police force. Gas lighting arrived in 1738 but policing didn’t appear until 1829, when Robert Peel, then Home Secretary, set up the first police force, with policemen earning the nickname ‘bobbies’ and ‘peelers’ in recognition of him. Although the Industrial Revolution resulted in excessive pollution, leaving Londoners to endure regular ‘pea soupers’ - dense bouts of smog - until the 1956 Clean Air Act, the Victorians were responsible for making London the capital we know today. They widened roads, erected wellknown monuments, constructed a water and sewage system and built what has become one of London’s most iconic forms of transport: the London Underground.

NEW CREMATORIUM IN ROMSEY A new crematorium has recently opened in Romsey after almost two years of development. Based on Ridge Lane, it is expected to look after just four or five funerals per day, offering a personalised service. It will also provide a more accessible choice for residents of Test Valley as well as Totton and other parts of Waterside who would previously have travelled to Southampton. Set against existing woodland and well screened from the main road, the crematorium offers the privacy that families appreciate at a funeral. Richard Evans, managing director of Westerleigh, was pleased to see the new service finally complete: “We are delighted to finally be ready to look after the bereaved in this area. We are very proud of how the crematorium looks. It is finished in the local farmhouse brick, in sympathy with its countryside setting. I am sure that it will provide a 38
tranquil and convenient place for local families to hold a funeral.’ Manager of the new service, Rob Metcalfe, said he is delighted to finally be able to open its doors. “It is a secluded, natural spot, ideally suited for holding funerals and allowing families to grieve in peaceful surroundings. GRANT FOR JANE SCARTH HOUSE A cancer support charity in Romsey has received a £1,000 Councillor Community Grant to help to extend and refurbish its new premises.
Jane Scarth House’s new premises are at 37a The Hundred but it is not quite large enough to fulfil its requirements. The charity has run a community project to build an extension which will provide additional therapy and counselling rooms as well as a befriending area.
Tadburn ward member, Councillor Mark Cooper, who presented the grant to Trustees Elaine Grainger, Sue Jones, Mike Street and Paul Grainger, said: “Jane Scarth House is an impressive charity that supports local people living with cancer, whether they are patients, friends, family or carers. I am pleased that the Council has been able to help its fundraising to make the premises even more fit for purpose.”
Sue Jones added: “Thanks to the support of local businesses, traders and volunteers, we’ve only had to raise a fraction of the total cost ourselves to date, with donations of labour, materials and money covering a huge proportion of the build costs. We are so excited about moving to premises that will provide an improved and accessible facility for our clients.”

SKILLS AND CONFIDENCE GROW AS HIGH NUMBERS OF YOUNG PEOPLE COMPLETE THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH’S AWARD Young people in Hampshire are more likely than those from other areas to complete the Duke of Edinburgh’s (DofE) Award, boosting their employability, confidence and skills, and contributing to their communities along the way. In the last year, some 69% of participants in Hampshire completed their DofE Award. This compares with 57% of participants across the South East Region. Leader of Hampshire County Council and Vice President of the Hampshire Duke of Edinburgh’s forum, Councillor Roy Perry, said: “The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award gives many young people the
self-assurance, inspiration and skills they need to succeed in adulthood. It’s a tough programme and not everyone completes it, which is why we’re especially proud that, in Hampshire, such a high proportion of young people are gaining the Award.” In Hampshire, around 115 local schools, colleges and open centres operate as DoE centres. They work with the County Council, accessing support with activities such as recruiting new entrants, training scheme leaders, finding volunteers to help run sessions, lead expeditions and assist young people to set up their activities. This package of support, funded collectively by the centres that use it, enables a consistently high standard of training and resourcing to be maintained across centres in the county. Currently more than 4,000 young people in Hampshire are working towards a Duke of Edinburgh Award.
