Hello Again I regularly use the services in Discover Chandlers Ford, and from time to time do mention the businesses. This month I have two to tell you about for completely different reasons. Firstly I asked Danny at From Old to New (page 9) to have a look at my sofa. It’s probably about 7 years old and still in good condition. However it had collapsed at one end under the cushion and was saggy and uncomfortable (rather like the bottom that caused the damage I suspect!). Danny called at the house and quoted me a very reasonable price. He came and took it away a couple of days later and had it back to us within 48 hours. An excellent job I must say, made to look as good as new, even underneath the cushion. Secondly I’m recommending someone because they didn’t do some work for me. We’d been told during the summer that my teenage daughter’s car needed a new alternator. Sure enough when the winter came, we’d had a couple of occasions when the battery went flat. So we took it in to Best Autocentres (page 28) in Eastleigh. They called a couple of hours after dropoff and said that they’d checked both the battery and the alternator and both were fine, there was no work needed, and no charge for the check. Why had the battery gone flat then? If you leave a 11 year old car on the drive in the winter without using it for 10 days, then only drive it for three miles with the heater and the lights on, it will go flat. I was very impressed – if they had changed the alternator I would have been none the wiser. I should emphasise that I have used most of the garage services in here and always been happy with the work that has been done, but it’s the first time I’ve been happy with work that hasn’t been done!

SHORT STORY
Parma Violets by Jackie Brewster “Can you be trusted to mind the café while I nip next door?” Aunt Carol asked solemnly as though she was leaving Becky in charge of the country. It was a big responsibility, and this was only Becky’s third day. The lunchtime rush was over, and there had been no customers for nearly an hour. While Becky was grateful to Carol for giving her a holiday job, she found that buttering cobs was not as easy as they made it look on television. She suspected Carol wasn’t convinced she had what it took to be a success in catering. “Whatever you do,” Carol warned her, ”don’t let that rat chap in.” Which seemed both a strange and reasonable request. Left alone, Becky practised folding napkins until she heard the café door open. An elderly gentleman, smartly dressed, sat down at the table by the window. Becky took a deep breath, picked up her order pad and walked briskly over to him. “What can I get you, sir?” she asked. He was wearing a jacket which appeared to be wriggling. A small furry nose popped up between the lapels. Becky nearly dropped her pencil. “Oh, don’t worry about him,” the man said. “He’s fine.” “Pets aren’t allowed in the café,” Becky said nervously. She was almost certain this was true because she’d read a sign in the window. “Roland’s not a pet,” the man replied, browsing the menu. 8
“He’s a guide dog, and they’re perfectly welcome everywhere.” “But you’re not blind,” Becky said, a little embarrassed. “Of course everyone immediately thinks of guide dogs for the blind.” He closed the menu as though he found nothing appetising within it. “Roland’s an allergy guide dog. Have you heard of that?” Becky confessed she had not. “I am allergic to parma violets,” the man continued confidentially. “Roland has to sniff my food to confirm it’s safe to eat.” “Allergic to parma violets?” Becky repeated blankly. “Dangerously.” The man nodded sagely and tapped the menu. “Can you recommend anything that doesn’t include parma violets?” Becky was confused. Parma violets were little purple sweets she had no idea they were also a cooking ingredient. “I don’t think there’s any in the tea,” Becky said hopefully. The man frowned, “Can you guarantee it?” She shook her head. “In that case, it’s a good job I have Roland here.” He pulled Roland out of his jacket and sat him in his lap. He was a funny looking dog, with short legs, a pointy nose and a long body. “What type of dog is he?” Becky asked. “He’s an allergy dog, we’ve been
through this.” The man waved his hand dismissively. “Be quick with the tea dear, I’ve a plane to catch.” Becky hurried back behind the counter. Something didn’t feel right about the man and his allergy dog. She hoped he would drink up and go before her aunt returned. After all, the nearest airport was a two hour drive. She was not in luck. Carol bustled into the café carrying a box of crisps. “Any customers?” she asked. “Not really,” Becky lied as she overflowed the teacup. “So who’s that for?” Carol asked dubiously. “The gentleman over there.” Carol turned round and almost exploded. “Not you again,” she screamed. “Get that rat out of here!” The man scooped up Roland protectively. “He’s not a rat,” he said indignantly. “He’s a ferret, and they’re very clever animals.” “He sniffs parma violets,” Becky added to explain the situation. And with that, her fate in the world of catering was sealed.

LOCAL EVENTS
Southampton Makerspace Grand Opening On 1st February adults and children with a keen interest in making, gathered to join a group of hobbyist makers, technologists and artists for the Southampton Makerspace grand opening event. So Make It - the volunteer-run non-profit organisation behind the Makerspace - has spent the past year planning, growing, and equipping the Makerspace to serve Southampton and the surrounding areas maker community. This event showed the fruit of their labours, raise awareness of this exciting place and attract new members. A Makerspace is a community-operated workspace where people with common interests, often in computers, technology, science, digital art or electronic art, can meet, socialise and/or collaborate. Whilst common place in parts of America and Europe, they are only recently growing in popularity in the UK. The Makerspace's membership has a strong knowledge base in many up and coming technologies such as 3D Printing, Robotics and Home Automation; however the space is also equipped for machining, woodwork, metalwork and would like to grow membership knowledge in these and other areas that come under the "make" umbrella. Three dedicated areas allowing for workshop, presentation and electronics/3D Printing activities to take part without intruding on each other and allows the group to build upon the presentations and workshops it has run in the past. To find out more about the activities or get involved contact So Make It, Unit K6, Pitt Road, Freemantle SO15 3FQ, open to the public on Tuesdays and Thursdays 19:30 – 22:00Hrs and Saturdays 14:00 – 16:00Hrs. LIFE BEGINS
When Did You Last Do Something Impulsive? It sometimes pays to follow your instincts. Author JK Rowling reportedly decided to write the first Harry Potter novel after an idea for the story occurred to her when she was travelling on a train from Manchester to London. Following a painful divorce, she completed the book as a struggling single mum on state benefits, becoming a multi-millionaire within a staggering five years. Yusuke Funaki had a good job as an engineer in Tokyo. By chance he saw a performance by the world-famous circus company Cirque du Soleil and was so inspired by the performers that he decided to learn the gymnastic ropeskipping techniques he had seen in the show. After a few years of practice he abandoned engineering and literally ran away to join the circus. He is still working with Cirque du Soleil as a performer at their Florida base. The link between these two individuals is their willingness to follow an impulse, taking 14

up new activities that – given their backgrounds and relative inexperience in their chosen fields - were far from guaranteed to result in success. It takes a certain kind of courage to risk everything in order to follow a dream, especially when we know it might fail. Most of us, at some stage in our lives, have done things that we have regretted at a later date - a new hairstyle or a tattoo, a weird auction lot that seemed too good to ignore… sometimes our spurof-the-moment choices seem so out of character it’s almost as though someone else has taken over our minds. “Did I really do that?” you ask. A study of the brain shows why we feel this way. The emotional mind, based in the limbic system, is separate from the intellectual mind, which is found in the prefrontal cortex. While the primitive, emotional part of our brain makes rapidfire decisions about things we like, dislike, hate, love, fear or want, the intellectual and more logical mind is geared to making deliberate and rational
conclusions at a slightly slower pace. Therefore when you allow your emotional brain - known as the amygdala - to guide your actions, you’re likely to end up doing something that your rational self would prefer to avoid. We tend to associate impulsivity with youth and it’s true that young people are probably more likely to follow their impulses when making key decisions. In time, however, most people discover how to regulate these urges in order to function as an adult. Mature people tend to suppress their emotional responses, using the knowledge they have acquired, backed up by logic and reason, when considering a set of options. While no-one would doubt the benefits that knowledge and experience can bring, something is perhaps lost in this process. Impulse and risk-taking are closely linked with creativity, and there’s a danger that we may ignore the creative impulses that (as J.K. Rowling and Yusuke Funaki discovered) have the power to change the course of
our lives. By middle-age, many of us have ceased to follow our instincts, relying almost exclusively on the tried and trusted methods that we learned in our formative years. In order to stay safe and minimise risk we base our actions – including where we go, who we see, what we eat – on things that feel safe and familiar, but does sticking with what we know actually inhibit brain development? The Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives (www.dana.org) is a non-profitmaking organisation of more than 300 leading neuroscientists in America, committed to making the public aware of the progress and benefits of brain research. According to the Trust: “The
brain wants to learn. It wants to be engaged as a learning machine. That means stepping out of the same old routines and trying something new and different.” When individuals settle into routines that are repeated automatically from day to day, the brain activity required for those activities decreases. That means that we tend to carry out familiar actions on autopilot and consequently our minds receive very little stimulation. When the brain encounters something unfamiliar, it creates new neural pathways that help it to understand and master that new object or challenge. The good news is that older people can reactivate their brains by undertaking new activities, or by
approaching established routines in different ways. That can be as simple as taking a different route to work or as complex as taking a degree in later life. Whether you decide to join a choir, take up a musical instrument or volunteer for a local charity, it’s not really about the activity – it’s about rekindling the youthful spark that encouraged you to experiment and try new things. At the very least it will give your brain some exercise, at best it might be the key to a whole new life.

News from Chandlers Ford & Winchester MP Steve Brine I have been initiating some major projects in the constituency to start 2014 and few are larger than my Health Check Survey. My constituents know I am a passionate supporter of the NHS but we should be honest in saying it is far from perfect and I think things will need to change things sooner or later to make it a worldclass public service that delivers better outcomes when we fall ill. The clinicians have come forward with plans for major change in our area and I believe we must hear their rationale and have the opportunity to be fully informed as the future of stroke, emergency and especially maternity services
are discussed. Despite spending more time trying to understand the huge complexities of modern acute medicine than anything else in recent years it is still the subject which worries me most and I know many people share my anxiety so please have your say. I have also organised an open meeting for constituents which will be held in Winchester on Thursday 27th March. Find out more and take the survey www.stevebrine.com/prioritynhs During Parliament’s recent halfterm recess I was still handling a large volume of requests for help following the recent floods
but I and the team – including Popcorn - also made time to spend a morning knocking on doors chatting with residents in Chandler’s Ford (pictured). Despite all the modern communications it’s still the best way to connect with constituents so keep an eye out as we will be in your street next! You can catch-up on all of my work online www.stevebrine.com or by calling 01962 791110. Steve Brine MP for Winchester & Chandler’s Ford

Race for Life Hampshire women are being urged to join forces and show cancer who’s boss by signing up to Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life 2014 which is now open for entries. Every day, around 5 people are diagnosed with cancer in the South East. Everyone is special, everyone is somebody’s mum, dad, brother, sister, friend or colleague. That’s why Cancer Research UK is calling on local women of all ages, shapes and sizes, to defy this dreadful disease by entering Race for Life 5km or 10km events in Winchester on Sunday 8th June or Southampton on Sunday 6th July. Race for Life is non-competitive. It’s not about being fit or fast. Most women are able to walk 5k in an hour while chatting and having fun. Or they can choose to jog, run or even dance around the course if they prefer. Cancer Research UK receives no Government funding for its ground-breaking work but with help from the people of Hampshire, the charity intends to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured. To enter Race for Life today go to www.raceforlife. org or call 0845 600 6050.

It’s that time of year again. Suddenly everyone is talking about tax free savings and the banks and building societies are in overdrive, advertising different types of ISAs.
Perhaps you’ve never considered tax free saving before, either because you’re not sure how it works or don’t think you have enough money to make it worth it. But you’re really missing a trick if all your savings are being taxed – so read on for an introduction to making the most of your savings in the next tax year.
Avoiding and Reducing Tax in your Savings If you don’t earn enough to pay tax – that is, you earn less than your annual tax allowance – then you won’t have to pay tax on your savings income, unless it takes your total income over your tax allowance. But as most banks and building societies automatically tax your interest, you’ll need to register as a nontaxpayer by filling in form R85 here: http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/ forms/r85.pdf (you need to fill in a new form for each institution you bank with). If you’re not sure if this applies to you, take a look at the handy helpsheet at http:// www.hmrc.gov.uk/helpsheets/ r85-helpsheet.pdf. Don’t forget that children are liable for tax too – the majority of them won’t earn enough to go over their allowance (unless they’re a 22
Harry Potter star or a teen with a remarkably well-paid part-time job), but parents need to fill in an R85 form on their behalf. It’s worth bearing in mind that if money given by a parent produces interest of more than £100 a year, the interest is treated as part of that parent’s income, so be careful (this only applies to money from parents, not from any other relatives or friends). If you or your partner pay different tax rates, or either of you pays none at all, consider putting your savings in the name of whoever has the smaller tax liability. Of course some couples may not be happy for their savings to be in just one name; that’s a decision they need to make together. But if your partner is paying higher rate tax of 40% and you’re paying the basic 20% rate – or no tax at all – it obviously makes good financial sense for savings to be in your name, and vice versa.
Tax Free Savings Even if you’re a tax-payer, there are government sanctioned schemes that allow you to receive savings interest tax-free. Tax-free saving schemes allow you to invest a limited amount of money in each tax-year.
What kind of tax-free savings are available? ISAs The most well-known taxfree saving scheme is the ISA (Individual Savings Account). An ISA allows you to save a limited amount each year. In the 2013/14 tax year, adults may invest up to a maximum of £11,520 in ISAs. There are two main kinds of ISA; Cash ISAs and Stocks and Shares ISAs (sometimes called ‘Investment ISAs’). You can save the full ISA allowance in a Stocks and Shares ISA, but only £5760 per year in a Cash ISA, so you may decide to invest in a Cash ISA and put the rest in a Stocks and Shares ISA if you want to invest your full allowance. Many Cash ISAs now have instant access facilities, which is handy if you want to save but think that you might need to dip into your ISA. ISAs are also available for children up to 18 too, but Junior ISAs
have an investment limit of just £3,720 per annum – and those born between 1 Sep 2002 and 2 Jan 2011 aren’t eligible, as they have Child Trust Funds. Of course, most children won’t be paying tax anyway – so is there any point? Possibly - because one advantage is that savings in a Junior ISA automatically convert into an adult cash ISA when the child turn 18, and then remain tax-free – even if the amount is over the adult ISA limit. The Government backed NSI (National Savings and Investments) schemes are also worth investigating. They sometimes offer Savings Certificates which give tax-free returns – without affecting your ISA allowance. You can also save tax-free with a Friendly Society. Their savings schemes or policies often come with other features such as life or health insurance, but they’re designed for long term investing;
charges or interest reductions can be severe if you stop payments or end the policy.
Pensions Pensions are one type of saving we should all have, and pension contributions accrue tax relief. You can usually pay extra voluntary contributions into your employer’s pension scheme, and can also pay into a personal pension scheme (either as a top-up or your sole pension). Of course pensions aren’t designed for short-term investment; some pensions will allow you to take early lump sums, but always check terms and conditions before deciding how much money to commit long term. Of course, that’s sound advice for all saving. Spend time comparing schemes and accounts – and always read those terms and conditions carefully.

Your Legal Options For Divorce Q:
In 2011, my Partner and I entered into a Civil Partnership, but the relationship is now over and he has left our house. Is our situation the same as a divorce? Tim, Chandlers Ford
A: A Civil Partnership ends on
dissolution in the same manner as a marriage. A couple must have remained within the Civil Partnership for at least one year and since yours dates back to 2011, that is not a problem for you. You would have to file a Petition citing the reasons why the partnership should end and, if children are involved, you would have to file a ‘Statement of Arrangements’, which would include plans for them. A Civil Partnership can also be ended by annulment, making it
void or voidable, meaning that it either never existed or that it was legal but no longer is. However, most Civil Partnerships are ended by dissolution, a process which takes an average of three to six months. You need to prove that the relationship has suffered an irretrievable breakdown due to one of the following four reasons:• unreasonable behaviour. • separation of two years prior to the dissolution with partner consent • separation of five years • desertion for a minimum period of two years prior to making the application When it comes to finances, a Civil Partnership will give you the same legal rights as married couples. Maintenance payments can be awarded for a limited period of time (a term of months or years) and the Court can also order lump sum payments, pensions to be shared and property sold or transferred. There will often be a range of possible solutions to dividing the assets in your relationship. Hopefully, you will be able to come to an amicable agreement with your partner which can be embodied in a legally binding agreement called a ‘Consent Order’. If you cannot agree, the Court will take into consideration your respective incomes, earning capacities, property and any
other financial resources that you may have, or are likely to have in the foreseeable future. They will also include any increase in earning capacity which would be reasonable to expect either you or your partner to make, the standard of living before the relationship breakdown, your respective ages and the duration of the partnership. If there are children from the relationship, generally speaking the Court will give priority to whoever is caring for them and will try to assess the subsequent reasonable needs, such as housing. I have made reference to the Court, but of course you do not need to pursue your financial remedies through the Court. Mediation is always available. This is a private and confidential dispute resolution process in which an independent neutral person “the Mediator”, is appointed to support both parties in reaching an amicable settlement with a view to avoiding the need to spend further time and a great deal of money in the Court process. If you are still able to talk things through, then my advice would be to seek the assistance of a trained Mediator, as this is often the most amicable and efficient way of resolving outstanding issues. If I can be of any further assistance to you, please do not hesitate to get in touch. By Emma Cole

MOTORING
First Drive: Infiniti Q50 S Hybrid What is it? Remember the Infiniti G37? No, we didn’t think so. When it quietly appeared on the scene in 2009, it was one of the first Infiniti’s Brits could buy. But with, how should we say this, interesting styling, a thirsty 320bhp 3.7-litre V6 petrol under the bonnet and acres of switchgear poached from low-rent Nissans, it wasn’t terribly successful. But that was then and Infiniti now has a far more appealing proposition for the nation’s fleet managers used to buying 3 Series BMWs and Mercedes C-Classes. We’ve already driven this car abroad but now we’re one of the first to slip behind the wheel of a British car – and Infiniti UK is understandably proud of its latest product. “It’s a halo car for us,” a spokesperson told us on our test drive. “A real performance car with the added benefit of low running costs.” What’s under the bonnet? We have the all-wheel-drive Q50S Hybrid on test – you could opt for a version fitted with Infiniti’s new 2.2-litre diesel – and it sports a 364bhp 3.5-litre V6 petrol mated to a 50kW electric motor. It tops out at 155mph and reaches 60mph in 5.1 seconds. To put that into perspective, a BMW M5 will reach 60mph in 4.1 seconds but the Q50S will return a combined MPG of 41.5 and emit 159g/km of CO2. It’s quick and punchy, but it won’t be the 32
By James Batchelor, editor of CarDealerMagazine.co.uk
best-seller in the UK – that’ll be the diesel. What’s the spec like? It seems to have everything you could want from this type of saloon. The Q50S Hybrid retails at £41,635 and comes absolutely loaded with tech and electric wizardry. The headlines are: full leather upholstery, NASA-developed ‘fatigue free’ front seats, climate control, parking sensors, Bluetooth with streaming and Infiniti’s clever new infotainment system. The latter not only looks neat but works well too – although we weren’t behind the wheel for long so we can’t say how easy it would be to live with. The Q50S has another crafty little piece of tech too. Called Active Lane Control, the system reads the white lines on the road and keeps the car tracking safely between them. Any rivals? Well, it’s the three big guns that make up the biggest competition – namely, BMW’s 3 Series, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and the Audi A4. There’s no doubt the Infiniti matches the Bavarian threesome in many areas and it does have individuality up its sleeve too. For other left-field choices, there’s also the Volvo S60. What’s it like to drive? There’s no doubt it’s smooth and relaxing to drive. Complaints
have been aimed at the Q50S’s steering-by-wires system that can feel artificial. But on our admittedly short test drive, we had little complaint. While it doesn’t match the sheer precision of the 3 Series, the Q50S can be set up for the driver’s tastes – whether sporting or comfort – and is perfectly adequate. A hybrid saloon will spend most of its time navigating city streets and motorways – and for this the Q50 would seem to excel. The verdict This is a car with some of the tightest shut-lines in the business and seriously impressive build quality. Add in smooth driving dynamics and European styling, the Q50S is a fine car. Whether it’ll make a dent in the executive saloon car market is yet to be seen, but Infiniti deserves to do well with this car.

LOCAL EVENTS
Shieldhall to Revisit Bournemouth Air Festival The SS Shieldhall – the oldest passenger cargo steamship still active in Europe – has announced her cruise programme for 2014. The ship will shortly be journeying Website www.ss-shieldhall.co.uk to Dry Dock in Falmouth for hull repairs, part of a £1.4 million HLF grant project. On her return to Southampton Shieldhall will commence her 2014 programme on 31 May with a 2 hour Vikings! Cruise, remembering the 1000th anniversary of Canute being crowned King of England in Southampton. Other cruise highlights for the year can be seen on the website www.ss-shieldhall.co.uk. Most significantly though, Shieldhall is set to resume her annual visits to Poole in August, from where she will make three trips to visit the Bournemouth Air Festival. Guests on Shieldhall get a lot more than a conventional cruise along Southampton Water. The ship is manned and run entirely by volunteers, who actively encourage visits to the Engine and Boiler Rooms and also the Bridge. ‘We are told that the interaction with our volunteers is a highlight of everyone’s time on board’ said Graham. ‘On a warm summer’s day the role of engineer must be one of the hottest jobs in the country, as temperatures in the Boiler Room can reach 125 degrees Fahrenheit. Visitors love to see the engines in operation and whilst they can sympathise about the heat, they should know our volunteers love their work!’ ‘Shieldhall is an excellent resource for local residents and enthusiasts’ said Graham. ‘With the ongoing lottery work we are opening up Shieldhall to new audiences with a diverse cruise programme and also through her setting for ‘alongside functions’ where the ship hosts theatre, quiz and film nights. Last year Shieldhall celebrated her 25th anniversary ‘In Preservation’ – we are now entering a new and exciting era. It’s full steam ahead.’

What’s the alternative
Reiki Origins and Principles Reiki (pronounced ray-key) loosely translates as ‘life force’ or ‘spiritual energy’, and is a natural healing practice developed by a Japanese Buddhist, Dr Mikao Usui. Since its introduction in 1922, different traditions and forms have developed. Reiki practitioners believe they access a lifeforce, of which we are all part, and transfer this energy to their patient during treatment. They claim that this helps patients reach a state of equilibrium and stimulates their natural regenerative abilities, allowing them to begin healing themselves of any physical, mental, or emotional dysfunction. Every practitioner must be ‘attuned’ and taught by a Reiki master.
call us today for vouchers for Mother’s Day 02380 253666 www.harveystudios.co.uk
Having a Reiki Treatment A Reiki session usually lasts up to one hour, beginning with an initial discussion about the patient’s health issues. Then the patient lies down or sits on a chair in a relaxed position. They remain fully clothed while the practitioner transfers energy by lightly placing their hands on the patient’s body (or holding them just above) in a series of non-intrusive positions, starting from the head and working down the body. They don’t use massage or manipulation, and while some patients report feeling sensations, others do not. Some practitioners offer distance healing, prearranging a time when the patient lies down comfortably to receive treatment.
Efficacy and Evidence As yet, there is no scientific proof of Reiki’s efficacy. The Reiki Council state that Reiki shouldn’t be regarded as a cure for conditions, but rather as a natural form of healing that can support and enhance other treatments; practitioners aren’t trained in diagnosis. There are now National Occupational Standards for professional Reiki practitioners, which are available at https://tools.skillsforhealth.org.uk/ competence/show/html/id/2809/.

What happened in... ...April 1968? Average cost of a house was £4,350 A gallon of petrol was about 28p
driver, from Scotland, was killed in an accident in Hockenheim, Germany. Aged just 32 he had twice been World Champion and had won more GP races (25) and achieved more GP pole positions (33) than any other driver.
“…it really doesn’t matter with me now, because I’ve been to the mountaintop…And I’ve looked over and I’ve seen the Promised Land. And I’m so happy tonight; I’m not worried about anything… mine eyes have seen the coming of the Lord.” From the last speech, on the 3rd April 1968, of Dr Martin Luther King Jr.; Nobel Peace Prize winner, Baptist minister and spokesperson for non-violent protest in the Civil Rights Movement.

The next evening, while standing on the balcony outside his room at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, he was assassinated with a single bullet to the head. An escaped convict, James Earl Ray, was arrested and convicted of his murder and sentenced to 99 years in prison; although many, including some of King’s family, believed that Ray was innocent and that the FBI was involved.
2nd: The premiere of 2001: A Space Odyssey took place in Washington. The Stanley Kubrick film was a British-American production, made almost entirely in England, with the screenplay co-written by Arthur C Clarke.
10th: Two storms merged over Wellington, creating Cyclone Giselle, the worst storm in New Zealand’s history, with winds of 170 mph. Three ambulances and a truck were blown onto their sides during rescue attempts. At about six o’clock in the morning the ferry TEV Wahine tried to enter Wellington Harbour but was blown off course and onto a reef and badly damaged before being swept away. After several rescue attempts and false hopes the vessel eventually capsized at about 2:30 pm. 53 people were killed, including many who had taken to lifeboats and rafts. 20th: “People often blame the predictions of troubles for the actual troubles that eventually arrive”. “Politicians who shirk their duty deserve the curses of those who come after”. Just two of the points made by Enoch Powell in his lengthy ‘Rivers of Blood’ speech, for which he was demonized. 23rd: The first decimal coins were issued in Britain: the ten-pence and five-pence pieces.

How to Help Your Child With Maths Helping with homework doesn’t have to be a conflict or a chore, there are more subtle ways of managing it. • Don’t overemphasise how much you struggled with, and even hated Maths at school. • Try to bring up everyday maths in conversation. For example speed, distance, scales, averages, estimating, rounding and percentages such as in tax or shopping. • Don’t try to help them with something you don’t understand – find someone who can. • If you do understand, then keep your help brief and to the point, don’t lecture. • Ask leading questions, not just give the answers. • Always be positive and praise them all the way through. • Test your child regularly on their times-tables • Use some online Maths games at www.boostmaths. co.uk. For regular tips log on to Facebook and ‘like’ Boost Maths Tuition. For friendly, games-based Maths tuition for Key Stage 2 to GCSE with highly qualified and experienced Maths teacher, phone Caroline on 023 8034 1776, email cc@boostmaths.co.uk

Around Britain 5 Places Opened By Queen Victoria 1. Belfast The main building of Belfast’s Queen’s University was officially opened by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1849 when, owing to a city-wide outbreak of cholera, it was one of only a few buildings that the royal couple were permitted to enter during their trip. 2. Berwick-upon-Tweed Berwick’s Royal Border Bridge was opened by Queen Victoria in 1850. Designed by Robert Stephenson, son of the engineer George Stephenson, the bridge took three years to build and still forms an integral part of the East Coast Mainline today. 3. London After the sudden death of Prince Albert in 1861, his plan for a ‘Central Hall of Arts and Sciences’ in London was renamed in his honour. Queen Victoria officially opened what is now The Royal Albert Hall in March 1871 but is said to have been too distraught to speak at the inauguration ceremony, leaving her son Edward to instead announce that ‘the Queen declares this Hall now open’. 4. Manchester Construction began on the 36-mile Manchester Ship Canal in 1887, overseen by the renowned engineer Edward Leader Williams, who was knighted by Queen Victoria at the official opening ceremony in 1894. 5. Newcastle-upon-Tyne A remarkable dual-level road and rail bridge, Newcastle’s Grade I listed High Level Bridge was designed by Robert Stephenson and constructed between 1847 and 1849. At over 400m, it is the second-longest bridge spanning the Tyne and stands 80ft above the water. It was officially opened by Queen Victoria on September 27 1849, shortly after Stephenson turned down the offer of a knighthood. © Taken from The British Isles: A Trivia Gazetteer by Paul Anthony Jones, out now.

A Time for Love, A Time for Forgiveness Dr Who is a very popular TV character at present. A time traveller who sorts out the world’s problems, rights wrongs and set records straight, changing history so the good win and evil is defeated. If you could time travel, where would you go? Would you go into the future and see what life will be like for you in the years to come. Maybe go back in time and try to resolve a family disagreement that has caused upset for years, perhaps
make a change in your past to improve future prospects. Would you want to meet famous people and view great historical events first hand to see if the history books reported it all accurately? If you want to relive worldchanging events, why not visit the first Easter? Whether you are a Christian or not, it would be good to check out why Jesus was crucified. Why were the leaders of the people at that time so opposed to his teachings of love and peace? Why did they whip up a crowd to demand the occupying authorities, the Romans, execute him in the cruelest way known to man at the time? More importantly you could check out first hand the
resurrection reports, seeing a dead man come to life would convince you of his claims to be the Son of God, surely? Dr Who would have handled the death of Jesus so differently wouldn’t he? I suspect an army of angels would have been called on to rescue Jesus from the cross and his followers would use military force to overcome the evil Roman occupying force. Jesus just said, as he let them nail him to the cross, ‘Father forgive them.’ Time has shown that his message of forgiveness, peace and love has lived on, and if you visited Jerusalem at that time in your travels you would know that it isn’t just his message that lives on. The Green, Green Grass of Home Well, what a winter it has been for our gardens. And your lawn is probably showing the scars of every gale and deluge that has hit us over the last few months. No matter how lovely it was in September, right now it probably looks more like coir matting than a green carpet! What to do then to bring it back to life? Our featured advertiser this month, Greenkeeper Lawncare, have made a very successful business out of proving that using their professional (but very affordable) service is the best solution, with hundreds of happy, repeat customers year after year. So what’s the difference between professional and DIY?
Before the GreenKeeper treatment, our cover picture shows the after
Products Greenkeeper uses professional slow-release fertilizers, which have been developed, tested, and fine-tuned on tens of thousands of lawns, golf courses, sports fields and parks. Furthermore organic summer feeds are applied within your schedule at no extra cost.
Equipment Scarification and aeration are physically demanding procedures and need robust equipment to get good results – a domestic lawn rake isn’t up to scratch. Greenkeeper uses professional machines, clear up ‘arisings’ and dispose of them for you if necessary.
starting from square one. A lawn maintenance service can make a significant difference, giving your grass a regular program of TLC.
Cost Yes there’s a fee to pay to a professional, but you’d still need to pay for equipment and fertilisers if you were doing it yourself. And when you take into account the hidden cost of using your time it’s really great value ‘outsourcing’ this service. You only have to look at this picture – the ‘before’ – then turn to the front cover to see the ‘after’. The results speak for themselves, and with prices starting at just £14 per treatment, what’s not to love? Call Rob at Greenkeeper today for your free lawn analysis.
Analysis and Planning
Consistency
The Greenkeeper service begins with a complete lawn analysis, evaluating your soil type, and identifying any weeds and pests. Then they develop a programme of treatment that's specific to the needs of your lawn, which is monitored throughout the seasons.
Life and leisure are certain to get in the way of a TESTIMONIAL: Superb improvement consistent program in our lawn since you took it over from a of DIY lawncare. previous lawn company. ALSO FROM GREENKEEPER Pro-grow deliveries - excellent recycled green compost product for mulching, top dressing and general soil improvement. GARDENING
Bringing Up Babies By Pippa Greenwood, www.pippagreenwood.com
A visit to any nursery or garden centre at this time of year will reveal a brilliant array of herbaceous perennials. True, right now they may not look particularly enticing as they usually show little growth and seem to be unbelievably small but just take a look at the illustration on the label and you will see that these small plants have great potential.
74
At this stage, before they put on their fabulous foliage or flowers, herbaceous perennials, particularly those grown in relatively small pots (3in or 7.5cm) are fairly inexpensive, usually somewhere around the £1.50-£2.50 mark and great value. They’re packed full of potential and within a year or two will have formed really good sized plants. In order to make sure that newly planted herbaceous perennials not only survive but thrive, it’s essential that you give them that little bit of extra tender loving care. Small plants such as these are more likely to be prone to any weather extremes such as drought or waterlogging and even plants in larger pots should be well established. When you ease the plants out of their pots, if you see a really plentiful supply of roots that usually means you have purchased a good plant. Unlike woody plants such as shrubs and trees, a crammed in root system tends to mean that the plant has been growing well and is unlikely to lead to problems in the future.
Check the plant labels to see the ultimate spread of the plant and then this will give you an idea of how far apart you should space them. For the best effect you generally want to grow several individuals of the same species and I suggest you choose an odd number, perhaps three, or five for a much larger garden, as this invariably makes a better display than if even numbers of plants are used. It may be tempting to plant too close and although this will provide a better looking display initially, over-crowded plants are less likely to become well established, will have to be moved in the near future and in the meantime will be more prone to numerous diseases including grey mould and powdery and downy mildews. It’s also essential to plant at the correct depth. With herbaceous perennials you need to make sure that you place the plant in the ground to the same depth that it was in the container and although you may decide to mulch the soil afterwards, do remember not to mulch right up to or over the crown of the
plant, as this is likely to lead to poor growth and maybe even dieback. Weed control is essential and you can either hoe regularly between the plants to prevent the weeds causing competition or you can use a deep mulch or perhaps even place squares of landscape fabric or black polythene around each plant. Do remember however, that if you use polythene, rain will not be able to penetrate through it and so the plants are more likely to suffer from drought. With landscape fabric this is not a problem. I’m a great fan of copper-impregnated and coated fabrics as these help to keep weeds and slugs and snails at bay. Once you have dug over the whole bed, then it’s well worthwhile adding a general fertilizer at the rate suggested on
the packet; this will help to start the plant off well. If you notice that the soil is on the heavy side and unless you have chosen plants which are only likely to thrive under these conditions, it would be advisable to attempt to improve the soil conditions by incorporating plenty of bulky organic matter and grit. Similarly, if the soil is excessively dry, then you could try to improve its texture by incorporating large quantities of any good bulky organic matter. Once the plants are in position, firm the soil thoroughly and do take care not to compact it if it’s on the heavy side. Regular watering is essential and if the ground is not already quite moist, you should water the plants in well. Although they should have been in good condition when you purchased
them, do check them regularly for signs of any pests or diseases as it will be much easier to stop something in its tracks if you start to take action early on in the season. Pippa loves growing gorgeous veg and wants to persuade you to as well; visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com for the ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ veg growing system where she will send you garden ready plants and weekly advice and tips emails, making veg growing easy, productive and fun.

Chocolate and Eggs: Easter Food Superheroes or Arch-villains? At Easter, eggs are everywhere – both the decorated hardboiled variety and the tempting chocolatey type. But what’s the latest advice about eating eggs and chocolate? Do they harm or heal? Eggs Once considered a nutritional Big Bad Wolf, a better understanding of how our body uses food means eggs are now seen as an important nutritional source. Packed with goodness A medium egg is very low in carbohydrates, supplies over 10% of our daily protein needs and contains just 66 kcals and 4.6g of fat (less than a third is saturated). It also supplies many essential vitamins and minerals, including 3 often scarce in UK diets: it provides a third of our daily Vitamin D requirement (vital for bones, teeth and muscles), over half of our required Vitamin B12 (for red blood cell formation, energy metabolism and healthy immune and nervous systems), and nearly half of our selenium requirement. Around 20% of us have inadequate Vitamin D levels, and as eggs also contain useful 78
By Alison Runham
amounts of Vitamin A, Vitamin B2, folate, biotin, iodine and phosphorous, it’s not surprising that they’re increasingly recommended as a healthy and fulfilling food. What about cholesterol? And salmonella? At one time eggs were supposedly rather bad for us and we were given a weekly ‘safe’ limit. The concerns stemmed from misunderstandings about cholesterol, the ‘baddie’ that furred up our blood vessels. But research shows that cholesterol found in eggs and other foods has a negligible effect on our cholesterol level, which is influenced by many factors. Our body produces its own cholesterol, and although saturated fat has long considered the chief culprit in raising our blood cholesterol level, a fresh look at the evidence has recently cast doubt on this. As for salmonella – while the Food Standards Agency is recommending, for now, that vulnerable groups should only eat hard-boiled eggs, the massive increase in chicken vaccination has more than halved yearly cases of infection. Eggs with the Lion Mark are guaranteed to come from vaccinated chickens, and all of the 150,000 Lion Mark eggs
tested during the last two years were salmonella free.
Chocolate For years chocolate stood accused of causing acne, obesity, high blood pressure, coronary artery disease and diabetes, to name just a few. But research has shown it’s not necessarily guilty, and may also have positive effects. • Acne. There’s no scientific proof that chocolate causes acne. If there is a dietary link, studies suggests it’s foods with a high glycaemic load. • Obesity & diabetes. Most chocolate is high in sugar and fat, so as with any other highfat, high-sugar food, prolonged over-indulgence is likely to show on the scales. However, recent studies showed that chocolate can lower your insulin resistance (which could reduce your risk of developing diabetes) and leave you feeling full. In a trial on nearly 1,500 teens, those eating around 1.5 ounces of chocolate daily had less body fat than those eating 0.16 ounces, and also had more energy and higher activity levels. Scientists say 1.5 ounces a day may be beneficial for us: good news! The bad news? That’s about a square and a half. While there’s no need to avoid
chocolate altogether if you’re diabetic, experts advise you to monitor your total carbohydrate intake. • Cardiovascular health, cholesterol levels and blood pressure. Many studies suggest that cocoa has beneficial effects on cardiovascular health, improving blood pressure, vascular function and blood flow. It appears to reduce platelet aggregation and adhesion, making arteries healthier and reducing clot risk. Chocolate with good levels of plant sterols and cocoa flavanols may lower cholesterol slightly, but only – you’ve guessed it - when eaten as part of a low fat diet. • Stroke. A study involving 44,489 people concluded that chocolate eaters were 22% less likely to suffer a stroke and 46% less likely to die from one. • Brain function. Another study has
shown that chocolate can help preserve blood flow in the brain and prevent memory decline in older people. This could be an important factor in diseases such as Alzheimer’s. • Mood. Chocolate contains chemicals that can raise our serotonin levels and may also affect other receptors in the brain that trigger feelings of well-being. • Migraine. While chocolate contains come chemicals believed to be migraine triggers, recent data shows that cocoa contains compounds that would be beneficial in migraine treatment. There’s no need to avoid it unless you’re sure it’s a trigger. • Osteoporosis. Now for the bad news. Chocolate may contribute to osteoporosis. One study of women aged 70-85 found
that daily chocolate consumers had lower bone density and strength, which may be due to oxalate content, as oxalate reduces calcium absorption. Proper comparison studies haven’t been done between white, milk and dark chocolate, but most beneficial effects come from the cocoa content, while the unwanted effects are from the fat and sugar. So choose high cocoa content and low sugar and fat varieties when you can, and view chocolate as something to be eaten in moderation as part of a healthy diet.
