The Chandlers Ford Directory
Local News, views, events and your comprehensive guide to the businesses serving Chandlers Ford and Otterbourne
Dear Neighbours As Christmas approaches the thought of going anywhere near Winchester or Southampton fills me with dread. I’m not a fan of shopping – well actually it’s not so much the buying, I just loathe queuing – so when I do go, it’s in and out as fast as I can. But inevitably when I do make the effort, shopping is all I do. However I was doing some research this month for the next in the series of Hampshire Heritage articles we’ve been running. If you’ve been following these, you’ll know that each month we focus on somewhere within easy travelling distance that has historical interest but is a bit off the beaten track. This time we are looking at Winchester City centre (page 37). Having lived within a short drive of the City for 20 years now I was a little embarrassed to find how little of the historical interest in the area I had actually visited. I’ve hardly ever deviated from the High Street or the grounds of the Cathedral. I’ve never been to the Great Hall to see the round table; I’ve not made it up to Westgate (although it’s shut at this time of the year); I’ve been to the Winchester museum, but only once and at least 7 years ago. It’s often the way that you see far more of an area as a visitor than as a local resident. Next time we are trying to think of something interesting to do at the weekend, I know where to go, although it might not appeal to my 16 year old daughter quite as much as the retail option. The Directory has some really useful advertisers from beauticians to plumbers, childcare to electricians. But there are some also some unusual businesses in our smallads section on pages 84, 85 and 91. A ladies companion, hypnotherapy, piano lessons, grave tending and guitar tuning to name just a few. Till next month. Tania. Tania Houston 023 8027 6361, tania@cfdirectory.co.uk Advertising sales: Kevin Houston, 023 8027 6396, Kevin@cfdirectory.co.uk

Cycle or walk for leisure This is an 8 mile circular cycle route from The Cleveland Bay pub through Chilworth, Lords Wood, Southampton sports ground, the golf club and back. This route is a mixture of cycle paths, quite roads and a little off roading. If you prefer to walk there are instructions at the bottom for a circular route to and from the Chilworth Arms taking in much of the same route, but including the Roman Road (footpath only). For cycle map see: http://gb.mapometer. com/cycling/route_1480021. html 1) Take the George Perrett Way by the side of Tesco and join Raglan Way till you arrive at the traffic light junction with Templars Way and Castle Lane. 2) Cross the juction and follow the cycle path along Castle Lane until you see Misslebrook Lane on the LHS. Cross Castle Lane carefully and cycle to the end of Misslebrook Lane. 3) Turn left onto the A27 Chilworth Road. There is a shared cycle path on the other side of the road which you should join as soon as possible. Continue until you reach the Chilworth Arms pub which is on the corner of Manor Road. 4) Cycle down Manor Road and continue leftish onto Manor Drove which should take you over the M27 motorway. 5) Continue to the right on Manor Drove to the very end and enter Lords Wood. This bit is tricky as the paths are not labelled, but continue straight on over all junctions until you are almost at houses on the other side. The footpaths should cross over
6
a bridleway and you need to turn left onto this bridleway and follow it along the botton edge of Lords Wood until you arrive at Coxford Road. 6) Onto Coxford Road until you see on the LHS a pathway into the grounds of Southampton Sports Centre. Continue on the path and at the T junction take a left onto the main track through the sports ground. This will bend through the sports ground and eventually becomes Golf Course Road (no traffic though). This will take you up a hill. Stop at the top and take a look at the Memorial for Warrior the Horse on the LHS. 7) Just a little further is the Southamton City Golf Course club house where you can take on refreshments and enjoy the fantastic view. 8) Continue straight on which will now become a track (do not turn right on Golf course road). 9) The track will become Hadrians Way. Continue back over the M27 and on to the crossroads with Roman Road and Heatherlands Road. 10) Continue on Heatherlands Road until you reach the A27 Chilworth Road again. Turn left and use the cycle path back to the Chilworth Arms. 11) This time go straight over the A27 Chilworth Road from the pub onto Woodside. Continue down the hill and this will turn into a bridleway that returns
to Castle Lane. Be very careful at the end of the bridleway as you need to cross Castle Lane and get back onto the safe cycle track on the other side of the road. You could turn left or right to do this. I think turning left and then crossing over is the safer option. Back on the track turn right and backtrack to the Cleveland Bay. Well done. If you prefer to walk a 4 mile route: Start and end at The Chilworth Arms. View: http:// gb.mapometer.com/walking/ route_1480042.html a) Walk down Manor Road and continue leftish onto Manor Drove which should take you over the M27 motorway. b) Just over the M27 do not continue on Manor Drove, but go straight on down a track which is a walking route only. This will take you into Lords Wood and you need to follow this path straight through the woods until it rejoins Coxford Road. c) Follow instructions 6-9. d) Do not go onto Heatherlands Road, but take the left hand turn onto Roman Road which is a footpath for walkers only. e) This straight road will return you back to Manor Road. Turn right back to the Chilworth Arms. Many thanks to local resident Penny King for this piece

Tis the
Season to be glamorous
Courtesy of Estee Lauder
office It’s that time of year again. The annual offi ce get-together and accepting more invites to nights out with the girls than you could ever possibly attend. Christmas is great, but all that socialising can become stressful and a packed diary means less time to prepare for those all important dates. So, what you really need is an easy, effective eff ective and well-planned beauty routine that’s going to save you hours getting ready, guarantee you’ll look gorgeous and ensure that you’re the centre of attention - for all the right reasons. Being transformed from dingy to dazzling doesn’t have to take long, but preparation is certainly essential. Book hair appointments well in advance; it’s the busiest time of year for stylists and a marvelous mane is a must-have accessory. As great as it is to try out a new look, be cautious around the holiday season - hair disasters are sure to kill party spirit! Instead stick to a look that you know suits you and that’s easy to manage - leave the re-styles until the new year. Cold winter days, centrally heated rooms and
flu the usual bouts of seasonal fl u can play havoc with your skin, leaving it dull, dry and lifeless. So it’s a good time to take notice of your skin type and invest in a routine that will leave it glowing. suffer Dry, sensitive types suff er more in the winter and need to be regularly moisturised. Apply a day cream in the morning and a ‘heavier’ night cream in the evening to keep moisture levels topped up. Oily skin shouldn’t be neglected. It too needs moisturising - a ‘light’ product works best, and should be used twice daily. Combination skin must be managed using a specially formulated range, in order to balance the dry and oily sections of the face. Don’t forget the delicate eye area too - use an eye cream daily to avoid wrinkles. With hair styled and skin prepped, its time to find fi nd your perfect party make-up look. It’s a good idea to take advantage of the free offered makeovers off ered by most of the top beauty brands at your local department store. make-up can result in a great new look for you. After all, it’s so easy to become stuck in a make-up rut. And you get to try out the products before you buy. Take notice of professional application tips and invest in the right tools - quality make-up brushes leave a great finish. Establishing what you want from your cosmetics means that you can find the right ones for you. Long lasting foundations, lengthening mascaras and vibrant lipsticks work wonders for evening, and will help keep you looking great into the small hours. And finally, get your nails looking as polished as you are. Repair breakage and reinforce damage to the nail surface with a strengthening treatment. File and shape before applying lashings of colour. Or, for a really fashion-forward look, try the latest trend - nail wraps. They’re cute, creative, fun and perfect for a party. With everything now in place to make you look fabulous, all that’s left to do is enjoy every minute of the best time of year and make this Christmas one to remember.

Working from home When a house is not a home Working from home may not be a bed of roses, but it’s not all bad either. On the plus side can be numbered no transport costs, no fixed hours, and no dress code (okay, I know you’ve spotted that three minuses don’t make a plus but what the heck, this is literature not maths). On the minus side are endless distractions, no colleagues (which might be a plus side), and no support systems. Actually, though, that last minus can be a plus too. (Sorry, this seam of plus/minus interchangeability isn’t quite worked out yet. Even though I failed my maths O level three times I’ve decided that this is a pleasing conceit, and I’m sticking with it). I’ve had to call out my IT guy so often now that we’re friends. Not boozing buddies exactly – we don’t know the dates of each other’s wives’ birthdays or anything like that – but he does advertise regularly in my little magazine and unless I get another Trojan I’ll be in credit with him by about April! So that’s all good. The fact that we sold our home to buy a business and now rent a house neatly encapsulates both themes – the lack of support systems and the plus/minus interchangeability. When you own your own home, you’re financially responsible for everything that can go wrong with it. That’s a definite minus. When you rent, the landlord is responsible. Blocked gutters, a dodgy boiler, faulty wiring – they’re somebody else’s problem. A definite plus. Or is it? Because the one thing every office worker knows is
that if your support system turns out to be more apparent than real – if the IT manager is a dork (not that that ever happens, of course), or if the courier charged with a vital delivery turns out to be map-illiterate (which does!) – you’re on your own, struggling through a molasses-like swamp of setbacks and let-downs to finish that vital project knowing that if it doesn’t happen, you’ll be the one who carries the can. Well, landlords can be rather like map-illiterate couriers – utterly unreliable and impossible to call to account. They may not be bad people, but their imperatives are not yours. Heating broken down? In your own home, you’d have it sorted right away. But because your letting is his living, he has to find competitive quotes, which takes a few days – especially at Christmas which, thanks to the operation of sod’s law, it inevitably is. In the meantime you have a bar-fire on in every room as well as the TV, DVD player, CD player, your son’s bass amplifier, computer, printer, fridge-freezer, all-electric oven, washing machine, tumble drier (because of course it’s winter), various alarm-clocks, laptops, mobile phone/ beard-trimmer/electric toothbrush chargers, hair driers, and other electronic what-not all plugged in and because the wiring – which should have been sorted out two weeks ago but is awaiting competitive quotes – isn’t up to the job, there’s a sudden blinding flash and you’re completely in the dark as well as freezing your bits off. Raw turkey, anyone? You’d rather pay out of your own pocket if only in the interest of speed. But because it’s not your property, you know that the heating, lighting, TV, and a functioning computer wherewith to earn your daily bread are someone else’s responsibility and therefore not for you to touch. A big plus... or an even bigger minus? Paradoxes. They look neat on paper, but you wouldn’t want to live in one. by Ted Bruning

The Snowman My daughter built a snowman; it took her quite a while, A carrot for his nose, a row of stones to make him smile, I told her she could go upstairs, look in the landing drawer, And choose a woolly hat for him; we had them by the score, I went off to the shops to buy some special winter treats, But when I came home later, my poor heart skipped such a beat, Gazing at her snowman in that cold December chill, ‘Frosty’ looked quite different, and it seems, was dressed to kill, He wore designer sunglasses; he looked so self possessed, He wore my husband’s winter coat; the one that’s kept for best, Adorned around his frozen neck? My lovely Chanel scarf, The neighbours really loved it…but it didn’t make us laugh. ©Jan Jack’s Perfect Verse 2011 www.perfectverse.co.uk

MOTORING
Save money on motoring YOUR car is likely the second biggest purchase you ever make – so it’s vital you protect that investment.
Practical tips to help you save money on motoring
Just as you wouldn’t let a leaky roof or broken guttering fester on your house, you need to pay regular attention to your car to keep it in good working order too. And it’s not just about a bucket and sponge. Simple maintenance tasks can preserve your car’s life and its value at resale time. The difference between a car in ‘excellent’ and ‘below average’ condition can be £1,000, according to trade valuation experts, so it really pays to look after your motor. Here are some practical tips to help you save money in the long run. Well Oil Be
It’s amazing how many motorists don’t even know how to check their oil, let alone remember to top it up. However, failing to do so will have dire consequences. Check it fortnightly, making sure the car is on level ground, engine cold and the level is between minimum and maximum. Check coolant levels too and get any abnormal noises or poor performance problems checked by an expert.
Air We Go
Air-conditioning needs regular attention. Topping up the system with gas and lubricating it will cost around £70 at a garage and should be done every two years. This will stop unpleasant smells and bacteria forming. Poorly serviced systems have to work harder, putting undue strain on the engine.
At Your Service
The recession saw many motorists skip servicing to try and save money. This really is a false economy. Sticking to your car’s maintenance schedule will ensure it’s working properly, prevent failures and prove it’s been looked after at resale time. Keep every receipt and old MOT, as well as a stamped-up service book for the next owner.
Fuel’s gold
It might look like a costly alternative to regular fuel, but the AA says a few tanks of super unleaded can help preserve your engine. Using three tanks of super in succession will clean injectors and allow the engine to run more efficiently, helping preserve its working life.
Tyred Out
The penalty for driving on illegal tyres (under 1.6mm of tread across the central three quarters) is a fine and three points. Inspect your car’s boots weekly for damage, remove stones in the tread and look for signs of uneven wear. Pressures should be checked monthly too preserving the tyre’s life, and your fuel economy.
Easy Does It
The way you drive can dramatically affect how long your car will last. Driving with care, avoiding harsh acceleration and hard braking will reduce wear on components. It’s also worth thinking, do you need to make that trip? Lower mileage cars are worth more.
Polished off
Cleaning your car regularly with quality products is the best way to preserve its value. Glass’s Guide says a comprehensive clean can add £600 to a car’s value.
Hose Down
A vital part of the car cleaning procedure is to hose the car down before washing. This removes fine particles of grit that can scratch the paintwork as you wash. These scratches will make your paint look dull and hazy, putting off future buyers.
Wheel-ie good idea
Invest in a quality wheel cleaning brush and wheel cleaner to shift stubborn stains. Apply a coat of wheel wax which will stop future grime taking hold. Used car buyers love alloy wheels, but only if they’re in good condition.

Regulations Proposed for Will Writers For the past few years, I have been writing articles and voicing my concerns regarding the emergence of an increasing number of independent, unregulated companies whose business is Will-writing. I have cited examples from my own professional experience to illustrate the devastation caused to groups of friends and families by incompetence and bad practice. Thankfully, it would appear that I am not alone. The latest report published by the legal profession’s new consumer watchdog, ‘The Legal Services Consumer Panel’ or ‘LSCP’ has been in response to growing concern about the impact of the rapidly expanding number and sources of Will-writing practitioners. The report’s main recommendation was that willwriting should become a ‘reserved activity’. The LSCP recommended that all providers, including solicitors, should be obliged to satisfy a body of regulators that they are competent, follow a recognised code of conduct and allow any complaints about their service to be adjudicated by the Legal Ombudsman. Despite 82% of a recent poll of 1,000 people saying they thought training and qualifications were required before someone could become a Will writer, there no restrictions on who can be paid to draft a Will. In fact a recent survey showed that 67% of consumers wrongly believe that all Will writers are solicitors. The report uncovered evidence of poor quality Wills, high-pressure sales practices targeting those in their senior years, deceptive pricing and lost Wills when companies disappeared without
a trace. It is shocking to me that the creation of one of the most important legal documents that anyone can make has been able to evolve in this manner. Historically, it used to be that Wills were made by a solicitor. Whilst I appreciate in this day and age, no one sector can expect a monopoly on a service (and the report did uncover bad practice in law firms) the growing competition from banks, Will-writing companies and other providers has meant the activity has spread without anyone paying close attention. It is estimated that unregulated Will-writing companies prepare around 10%, of all Wills, amounting to 180,000 each year. The LSCP suggests an ‘Institute of Professional Will Writers’ and raising training standards for all practitioners, which I completely agree with. It also seeks support from the Office of Fair Trading to lead an enforcement campaign against Will-writing companies with the worst sales practices However, the report does make one observation that gives me further cause for concern. It says that in a reserved market ‘Will-writing
companies would not need to meet all the regulatory requirements places on solicitors’. This surely contradicts the LSCP’s main message? You can’t have one set of rules of lawyers and lighter ones for those outside the legal profession. In my opinion, the issue is trust and proof of competency. Yes, there should be one, agreed standard that the public recognise for all practitioners, but until then it is up to you to always ask for accreditations and accountability from the person drawing up your Will.

A Proverbial Life... Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise
Can you sleep? I mean can you get into bed, lay your head on the pillow and drift off into the Land of Nod? Can you sleep for more than four hours per night and awaken renewed, refreshed and reinvigorated: ready for the coming day - bright eyed and bushy tailed? If so, will you please tell me your secret? I can’t sleep. I want to sleep – desperately. I want to get into bed, arrange myself comfortably, turn off the lamp, and then to gently drop off into a deep and delicious dreamland. This never happens. Instead I toss and turn; flip over pillows to the cool side, rearrange duvets, count sheep, practice relaxation exercises, attempt to clear my mind and think nice thoughts, and – with great difficulty – try to refrain from mentally calculating how many more hours there are left before the alarm. Finally, I’ll get up, go downstairs and do something to distract myself from my sleepless state. In the small hours I’ve baked cakes, written letters, browsed eBay (and won a sofa at a bargain price - £2.50!), read books, listened to music, painted my toenails and washed clothes. Anything and everything to distract myself from my inability to fall asleep; it also keeps the urge to repeatedly bang my head against the wall at bay – I’m
sooooooo tired. How can you be so utterly exhausted and still not be able to fall asleep? I haven’t quite managed to figure that one out yet. It hasn’t always been this way. I used to have the ability to sleep anywhere and everywhere at any time of the day or night. I was a legendary sleeper; people used to look at me and say: “How can she sleep now/here/there?“ I’m not sure how I did it, I just did! I’ve slept on the floor of a ferry during a force 9 storm; whilst all around me were retching and vomiting I slept soundly on. I’ve slept beautifully in a tent in France while a monster Rave took place in the field next to us. I’ve put my head down and slept soundly during times of delayed flights, family crisis, high drama, low ebbs, loud noises and when I’ve been bored beyond belief. I’ve even managed to sleep with my eyes half open during a particularly mind numbing conference. It was only when a colleague jabbed me with her elbows and hissed, “Stop it, you’re snoring” that I fully awoke. Later my line manager congratulated me for providing an entertaining diversion. Mortified I apologised to the speaker; excusing my behaviour with the white lie that I was feeling a little unwell. How awful to prepare a speech, practice and then, during the delivery be met with the sounds of snoring from your audience...the shame! I do, of course, get some sleep. In the small hours at around four o’clock I will finally drift off. However, by eight o’ clock I’m awake again. I won’t say wide awake, as I’m never ‘wide awake’ nowadays. I’m tired, grumpy, fed up and living in a twilight zone of permanent fatigue. I follow all the usual advice: no napping during the day, gentle exercise (very gentle in my case), fresh air, nothing too stimulating late at night – nothing seems to work. This evening as you snuggle under the duvet, spare a thought for me; I’ll probably be up baking a cake, reading a book or knitting a scarf (scarves are the only thing I can knit). If you fancy sending me some zzzzzzzzzs, feel free. I promise to send them back...well, maybe. by A. O’Brien

Winchester draws visitors in their thousands at this time of year, as the Christmas shopping season gets underway. With a great atmosphere, a mix of chain and independent shops, the Christmas market and the ice skating rink, it really is a lovely place to go shopping. But Winchester is steeped in history and has so much to offer within walking distance of the High Street which doesn’t involve spending money.
Hampshire Heritage Winchester Cathedral Obviously by merit of its size, Winchester Cathedral is a big draw, and no review of the area’s heritage would be complete without at least a mention. In many cities the commercial area has developed well away from the places of interest, but the Cathedral is just behind the High Street and during December the ice skating rink and the Christmas market are sited in the grounds so the Cathedral is easy to include in a shopping visit. However as this series is about less well known heritage which is off the beaten track, we’ll move on. Winchester City Museum Also just behind the High Street is Winchester’s City Museum. The museum tells the story of the city through its extensive display of archaeological and local history collections. Starting on the top floor (there are three floors, lift available) the museum covers Winchester’s pre-historic origins, from Roman times to its development under Alfred the Great. On the second floor the city’s decline in the later Middle Ages details the creation of a new centre of government at Westminster
Round Table, Great Hall, Martin Kraft in London, the Black Death in the 14th century and the dissolution of the monasteries under Henry VIII. On the ground floor, Winchester’s modern day role as a local shopping centre and tourist destination beginning in the 19th century is shown with Victorian and Edwardian shops. Entrance is free (donations suggested) and the museum is open all year round. St Lawrence in the Square
and St Swithun-uponKingsgate churches Unlike many attractions churches really don’t need to have their particular attractions pointed out. Any long-surviving church will be fascinating in itself and these two in Winchester are no exception. St Lawrence in the Square could easily be missed - indeed you may have walked past it without realising it. Half way up the pedestrianised High Street ...Continued on page 38

you will see the Buttercross (an attraction in its own right) and just behind is an alleyway which would take you through to the grounds of Winchester Cathedral. As you go into the alleyway, on your left is the entrance to St Lawrence in the Square. St Swithun-upon-Kingsgate is built above one of the ancient gates in the walls of Winchester. It is first mentioned from records in 1264 when it was also destroyed by fire. It was rebuilt and has been much restored over the centuries. The church can be reached by going round to the south side of The Cathedral and going through Kingsgate. Worth calling in if you are in the area, or calling to check if they are open if you are making a special trip. www. stlawrence.hampshire.org.uk The Great Hall If you walk to the top of the High Street – beyond the pedestrianised area and up to Westgate (the large grey stone arch) you will find on your left The Great Hall and Round Table. The Great Hall was originally part of Winchester Castle which dated from the reign of William the Conqueror (1066-1087). By the end of King John's reign in 1216 the castle and its royal palace needed extensive repair. Between 1222 and 1235 the Castle's hall was replaced by the building which stands today, the Castle itself having
St Swithun-upon-Kingsgate (entrance on right of picture), Christophe Finot
been demolished by Oliver Cromwell in 1646. The Hall is a tourist attraction in its own right, but the real draw is the magnificent round table, mounted vertical on one end wall. Although now known to have been constructed in the late 13th century, and painted in its present form for King Henry VIII, the table has for centuries been venerated by generations of tourists as the mysterious table of King Arthur. The table is 5.5 metres in diameter, weighing 1200kg and is constructed from English oak. Entrance is free (donations suggested) and the Hall is open all year round. The Gurkha Museum In the same general area as the Great Hall is The Gurkha
Museum. Gurkhas are Nepalese fighters who have been part of the British Army for almost 200 years. They fought in the First and Second World Wars, in Kosovo, The Falklands, Iraq and are still serving in Afghanistan. In the Second World War their numbers peaked at 112,000, and although today there are only approximately 3500, they are still highly respected soldiers. The Gurkha museum covers the history of the Gurkas involvement with the British Army, and also gives an insight into the Nepalese cultural diversity, religious beliefs, dress and customs. Open all year, Adults £2, OAPs £1, children and service personnel free. Winchester’s Military Museums Again near the Great Hall there are other Military Museums well worth visiting. “The New Year is fast approaching and we have a large number of tenants moving into properties right up to 21st December! We have had a record breaking November, but still have a large number of tenants actively looking to rent in the Chandler’s Ford area.
The buy-to-let market December 2011
by John R Caines
With interest rates still at a record low level, we are seeing growing interest from buy-tolet purchasers wishing to invest in property, rather than keeping their money in savings. On a well-presented two or three bedroom rented property in Chandler’s Ford, the return on capital is in the region of 5% plus the appreciation in the value of the property over the longer term.”
If you would like expert advice on buying-to-let, our specialist lettings team would be pleased to hear from you on 023 8027 6500. We can also put you in touch with an independent financial advisor should you wish.

December Look, I’m sorry. I’ve tried, but I just can’t. December IS Christmas, and that’s all there is to it. And of course, it’s hard to find something to say about Christmas that hasn’t been said already, and by much better writers than me. But one thing springs to mind, and that’s my Christmas dinner without wine. Not without a drink, you understand, that would be unthinkable! (For me, at any rate). Usually, I’m in two minds about the right wine for the turkey. Something light, white, and spicy to cut through the richness – a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, say? But then, although turkey is technically poultry, it still wants something pretty muscular to stand up to it. A Côtes du Rhone or even (if I’m feeling flush) a Châteauneuf du Pape? One year I decided to have neither. Instead, I’d have beer. But which? I’m a bit of a beer snob, so the more esoteric the beer the better. But as I live 20 miles from the nearest specialist beer shop, I went to the supermarket instead, where my eye fell on the Leffe twins, Blonde and Brune, from Belgium. Leffe Blonde, served at around 4ºC in a chalicestyle stem glass, was called on to challenge the turkey, and a noble fist it made of it too. Although delicately flavoured for a beer of 6.6% alcohol, it had the body and the clout to stand up to roast potatoes and gravy; its slight
sweetness also went very nicely with the turkey itself. If Leffe Blonde was a match for the turkey, Leffe Brune was nothing short of a triumph with the pud. It’s recommended for spicy, rich food and/or chocolate, perfect for Christmas pud with brandy butter. Brune at 6.5% alcohol, although sweeter than Blonde, is actually more bitter too, and it had just the right peppery bite to contrast with the pudding. A year later I tried it again, but on a more adventurous scale, and this time with guests to impress. Instead of Champagne for an apéritif, I served flutes of wellchilled sparkling Belle Vue Kriek cherry beer with hot chestnuts and chunks of Toulouse sausage. Its slightly sour dryness was perfect. Beer really came into its own when tackling the main course. Big, spicy Christmas ales with high ABVs and plenty of attitude can easily take on the rich flavours of turkey with stuffing (not forgetting sprouts and cranberry sauce): I went for Adnams Broadside at 6.3% alcohol and wasn’t disappointed. Strong, dark beers are made for Christmas pudding: some are even called pudding ale. And they’re essential for making it, too: steep the dried fruit in a spicy ale (Robinson’s Old Tom at 8.5% is ideal) for at least 48 hours before adding it to the mix,
THE CHANDLERS FORD DIRECTORY | kevin@cfdirectory.co.uk
then stir in the soaking liquor. The aroma while the pudding steams is the very spirit of Christmas and as you’d expect, a glass of the same beer is an admirable companion to the pudding. And so: cheese. Beer goes far better with cheese than wine or port, especially with those British favourites, Stilton and Cheddar. So alongside our Christmas cheeseboard we cracked open two, a Burton pale ale in the form of Marston’s Pedigree and a traditional dark beer, Marston’s Owd Roger – pretty strong stuff at 7.3%, but hey, we were only sipping. Finally, Fuller’s 1845, a rich strong ale and the perfect digestif. After that, we retired to the sofa, turned on the TV and fell fast asleep. I don’t remember who washed up. Probably one of the guests.

There’s only one thing worse than
being talked about... Being in show business can be tough. I’m in a band myself and sometimes I wish I could walk out of my front door in my man-uggs and an old hoodie and pop down the road for a packet of chocolate digestives without being constantly hounded by the paparazzi. I look at my life now; I loosen the belt on my smoking jacket whilst watching the sun glint off the bonnet of my stretched Bentley as it’s meticulously valeted by a former member of the boyband Bros (can’t remember which one) and I think ‘Wow. I was happier then, back in the day. Back when I had nothing. Fame is but a shackle around my neck’. And then I devour another tub or two of foie gras and a plate of allbutter croissants and, just occasionally, that eases the pain. I jest, obviously, but these days celebrity gossip is an enduring staple of our media diet. Remember children, you must always have your fivea-day (Cheryl, Paris, Kerry, Justin and Wayne, that is). And not only do we want to talk about these people, but we strongly feel that we have the right to, thank you very much. We have bought that right. We have purchased the magazines and newspapers and celebrity hardbacks and in doing so have selflessly bequeathed upon The Famous a strange kind of invincibility. This super-power is so extraordinarily potent that it often has the fortunate side-effect of distracting the celebophile from the staggering lack of substance
behind whatever product their chosen idol happens to be promoting at the time. I experienced this first-hand at a gig where we shared the stage with an act who, only months earlier, had shot to prominence on a popular TV talent show. I’d like to start by saying that they seemed like lovely people, and I still to this day sincerely applaud them for making hay whilst the sun shone. That said, I regret to announce that their act was total nonsense. Utter guff. And yet the crowd went WILD. I strongly suspect that the first human beings to glimpse Michelangelo’s masterpiece in the Sistine Chapel came not even close to frenzy of this magnitude. And here’s the thing. Even I experienced a tangible thrill when they walked into the room. Ooh, they’re off the telly, my heart said. How tiresome, replied my brain. They are monstrously devoid of talent. But I literally couldn’t stop looking at them. They’d been in the same room as Cheryl Cole. And watching them gad randomly about the stage like
the boys who are cast as sheep in the school nativity because they’re the sort of kids who eat Play-doh, everybody there was touched in some way by the queer grace of their celebrity. Television, The Great Validator of the modern age, had bestowed glory upon them. And, as if to prove a point, here I am today still talking about them. In conclusion, I’d like to make it clear that, should I be fortunate enough one day to bask even briefly in this wondrous celebrity glow, I intend to exploit it for entirely malevolent purposes. By which I mean a ghost-written autobiography fabricating a turbulent childhood and an almost painfully camp exercise DVD. Watch this space, people… Chris plays piano in South London power-pop band The Lightyears. The Lightyears, voted the UK’s BEST POP/ROCK ACT at the Indy Awards, have played Wembley Stadium, toured across four continents and released a record with Sting’s producer. I have to admit it: I LOVE Christmas… and if there is one part of it I’d hate to do without, it’s a Christmas tree. No, I don’t mean a tinsley one or trendy black or brown one… I mean a tree complete with needles and ideally that wonderful aroma that only a real, proper Christmas tree can bring.
A real proper
Christmas Tree If you’re worried that real trees are not good for the planet, don’t forget that a British grown tree is most definitely not an ecological disaster zone – if you think about it, they’re a crop plant rather like a field of wheat except that they are generally given less fertiliser and fewer chemicals than many more run of the mill crop plants. So go on, make sure you buy one this Christmas!
but sadly it is the most likely to drop its needles. Having said that, if you treat it well, it won’t perform that badly and you can enjoy the lowest cost of the real trees.
The Fraser fir (Abies fraseri) is less regularly available, but the combination of its good looks and needle holding capacity make it well worth considering.
The Scots pine is now a regular option as a Christmas tree, with its long paired blue-green needles it’s quite distinctive. The needles are fairly densely packed on the branches and they also hold quite well.
There are a few things you ought to think about before you buy your tree, faced with rows of different types at often very varying prices. It can be really daunting, so have a read of my guide to real Christmas trees:
The Serbian Spruce (Picea omorica) has long been the favourite festive tree in central Europe, as it’s good looking and has good needle holding… but of course no Christmas-tree smell!
So, you’ve been persuaded to take the plunge, I hope? But how do you make sure you buy the best tree of the type you’ve decided on? And how do you help it keep its needles and its gorgeous appearance for as long as possible? It’s important not to buy a real tree too early as the longer they hang around after they’ve been cut, the more likely they are to go downhill. I always try to buy a tree produced by a member of the British Christmas Tree Growers Association – the BCTGA logo should be on the tree or clearly displayed nearby. Take a bit of time to choose the tree – check that it has a good, full shape and that its not too gappy or lop-sided (or if it has the
The Norway spruce (Picea abies) is the traditional tree, my favourite but perhaps not a favourite if you are more house proud. It has gorgeous dark green pointed needles and that unmistakable aroma

The Nordman fir (Abies nordmanniana) has become increasingly popular in recent years, with its shiny green needles being almost impossible to shift, so certainly a good choice for those who hate any mess.
leans make sure that this will be hidden when the tree is in your house). Check the needles - they need to be glossy (for those varieties where this is a characteristic) and the correct colour for the type of tree you’ve chosen. They also need to be free from pests and diseases - basically anything yellowed or inclined to shed, or with white fluffy bits should be avoided at all costs. Never buy a tree that has already been netted as this makes it a real lucky dip situation. If you do buy one quite early then the most important thing is to keep it outside - just recut the end of the trunk (yes, its time to dig out your DIY saw) and put the tree in a bucket of water in a sheltered spot outside. If it was in a net when you bought it, remove this as it’s important to have air circulating around the needles. When you bring the tree inside, try to avoid putting it anywhere too warm or close to a heat source and make sure that you use a stand with a water reservoir with water levels really well topped up – if kept well supplied with water then even the notorious (but lovely) Norway spruce Christmas tree should hold its needles well.
When Christmas is over and it’s time for the tree to come down, complete the green-loop and make sure you recycle it – they’re not the easiest thing to recycle or compost at home, but many councils and garden centres now offer a recycling and Christmas tree chipping service.

The Way I See It
Aiming for the truth Some people say nothing much happens in Chandlers Ford. It’s easy to agree, unless you were passing the Central Precinct at 10am on Thursday, 13 September 2007. It was there, at the centre of the town – by the little roundabout where Bournemouth Road, Winchester Road and Hursley Road meet – that a bullet was fired by a police marksman. There were two more rifle shots from another officer and then, at the bottom of the five steps leading down from the HSBC bank, a man lay dead. His companion, lying a few feet away, was wounded and would be dead before noon. Most years, UK police shoot dead only one or two people, so the double death in a single incident at Chandlers Ford made big headlines. The shootings followed 20 ruthless robberies masterminded by a south London career criminal, Mark Nunes. Some of the gang recruited by Nunes, 35, were old school mates for whom robbing security vans became a regular job. For 18 months they averaged a robbery a month. Police intelligence suggested
Nunes was planning a raid at the precinct. The Flying Squad positioned armed officers around HSBC and waited for the gang to arrive. Police appear to have been in a flat across the road, and some were even in the adjacent public toilets. The GS4 van pulled up on a yellow-paint hatched area alongside the bank. A security guard got out. Nunes ran from a parked car and pointed a gun at the guard’s head. The first shot rang out. Nunes fell to the ground, dead.
told in advance that they could shoot to kill. In October the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) said there was no evidence of criminal action or misconduct by the marksmen, though there were “issues” around the planning of the operation. At time of writing, a double inquest is underway in Winchester, where the IPCC report will be considered.
His loaded 9mm Beretta lay on the tarmac at the foot of the steps. An accomplice, Andrew Markland, ran from the bus stop across the road and made as if to pick up the weapon when his upper torso was hit by the final two bullets.
The Nunes gang repeatedly endangered lives and terrified security staff. A man’s life appears to have been threatened when the raiders died. Nevertheless, killing by powerful agencies of the state must be monitored rigorously. Left unchecked, it can appear menacing and ultimately undermine democracy.
Sandra Gidley, the then Romsey MP whose constituency included the precinct, was criticised when she called for an open inquiry. Mrs Gidley wanted to know if officers had been

Do you love gaudy baubles? Or are you more of a minimalist Christmas decorator? Katherine Sorrell outlines how to avoid Yuletide decorating excess while still enjoying a stylish festive season…
A Cool
Yule
When I was little my grandparents always had a fake Christmas tree that groaned with the weight of about a thousand sputnik-shaped fairy lights. Candy-coloured and frosted with artificial ice, they flashed on and off in a way that, to a five-year-old, was nothing if not glorious. Yup, my grandparents really went for it – and if that’s your style, I’m not going to knock it. There is another Christmas-decorating school of thought, however. One that allows you to celebrate without going over the top. Here are five guidelines to help you create a stylish seasonal look for your home: 1. The wreath Your front door is the handshake to your house, and a pretty Christmas wreath is a welcoming addition. Buy or make one that suits the size and colour of your door. Natural materials such as holly, ivy, bay and twisted willow are lovely, and you can finish it off with berries and ribbon for a traditional effect; alternatively, wire and palecoloured beads are subtle and sophisticated. Just avoid the pine-cone-sprayed-with-goldpaint-look. 2. The tree No Christmas is complete without a tree, and this is where ideas of pared-back décor tend to go astray amid a chaotic surge of baubles and assorted hanging things that you’ve accumulated over the years. Less is more, so stick to a colour theme: you could use plain silver balls with white or coloured lights, for example. Or go for a natural look, perhaps using ribbons, green twine and cinnamon sticks. For those leftover decorations that you’re desperate to display, why not pile them onto a small tree in a pot, or create a separate mantelpiece or fireplace arrangement? 3. The cards Even with the rise of e-greetings, the demise of the traditional Christmas card seems far away. But what to do with them all? Organise them, is

the answer. Propping them up randomly around the house might make for a jolly, ad hoc look, but if you arrange them en masse it’s far more effective. if you’re short of time, the best solution is simply to clear a side table or shelf and arrange the cards carefully with the largest at the back. But if you want to go for effect, try using painted mini wooden pegs to attach cards to a string, or punching a hole in each card and tying it on with bright ribbon, raffia or yarn. 4. The table Abandon any thoughts of paper napkins printed with holly berries or tartan – simple colour co-ordination is key here, from table cloth (or runner) to serviettes, plates, glassware and any extras. And the colour doesn’t just have to be red or green – with some lateral thinking a gorgeous display can be created around an unusual colour theme: pastels, icy whites and silvers, dark and moody or contemporary brights, perhaps. Start by picking one colour, and accessorise with touches of co-ordinating tones. If your crockery is coloured, it makes sense to work everything around that; if it’s white, you can do pretty

Aerial Fix runners-up in national contest Husband and wife team John and Fiona Campbell of Aerial Fix, Chandler's Ford have been recognised for their excellent work and voted runners-up in the first national Best TV Installer of the Year 2011 contest. The competition was organised by the CAI (Confederation of Aerial Industries), ASTRA (owner and operator of the satellites that transmit programmes from broadcasters like Sky and Freesat) and the specialist What Satellite & Digital TV magazine. The couple won the Super Installer certificate in April and What Satellite magazine devoted a whole column to their skills in its issue that month. Then, along with the other
winners of the monthly certificate their names were put into the hat for a chance to win the ultimate tribute and become the Best TV Installer of the Year in 2011. CAI Senior Executive, Tim Jenks, said, “We’ve been hugely impressed by the level of expertise the entrants have shown and their dedication to their work is so obviously appreciated, as is demonstrated by their nominators and those who voted for them.” Aerial Fix were nominated for the Super Installer certificate by customer Susan Evans, who was delighted with the work they did for her 90-

year old mother, Mary. They went the extra mile to ensure that Mary understood the technology and telephoning Susan to keep her informed. They even returned the following day, free of charge after Mary had inadvertently pressed the wrong button. This is what Susan called 'real service'. It was their technical skills and after sales care that earned Fiona and John their runners-up accolade.

Memories Of
M y Childhood In Part One
By chance I came across the web site of the Chandlers Ford Directory and was pleased to read the information therein as I was born in Chandlers Ford nearly 80 years ago and I have many memories I would like to share with you. I think it is important that us "oldies" should record our memories whilst we are still alive so that present residents should know a little of the history of where they live. In 1937 I started school at Sherborne House School in Lakewood Road where Mrs Wise was Headmistress. I was in the form run by her daughter, Miss Dorothy Wise. The school evacuated to Somerset in 1940 but I did not go with them going instead to Kings Road School where Miss Golding was Headmistress. My form master was Mr Lush who used to punish children by hitting them across the knuckles with the narrow side of a ruler. This was painful and would not be allowed today and his pupils, including me, were afraid of him. I remember that during air raids we used to go into the shelters in the school grounds and sang songs. I had a friend
Chandlers Ford 1932 – 1950
in the class called Pat Haskell. Her father had a haulage business which he operated from his house at the top of Station Lane. I can see the house in an aerial photo taken in 1950. I wonder if Pat Haskell is still around and if she reads this she can contact me by email as I now live in Worthing, West Sussex (contact Tania for the address). I lived in Castle Lane and remember as a small boy of about 4 years old being taken by my Mother to look at the pigs on a small holding on the south side of Chestnut Avenue. On entering Chestnut Avenue from Bournemouth Road there was a Hilliers Nursery and next door there was a field where in 1937 there was a camp for the Basque children evacuated from Spain during the Civil War. Further along the road in 1940 there was a battery of Anti-Aircraft guns and when the Blitz was on I could hear the command "Fire" being given. The soldiers lived in Nissen Huts on the side of Chestnut Avenue. When I was about 4 or 5 I developed Scarlet Fever
and was sent by ambulance to the Isolation Hospital. I never knew where I was and was home-sick and couldn't eat. I now believe it was along Oakmount Avenue. In September 1940 I remember standing outside my kitchen door looking towards Eastleigh. At that very moment I saw German bombers dropping 4 bombs out of 14 on the Cunliffe-Owen aircraft factory and I can still picture in my mind these bombs falling. I read an article on The Chandlers Ford website called "Growing up in Chandlers Ford during the War". It so happens I can remember Jean Easter's Mother who lived nearly opposite me and I share her memories of the air raids and the tank testing pit in Castle Lane. I too think we were lucky to live so near the open fields which are now sadly built upon. I also remember the Water Services Inspector, Mr Rose who lived in Castle Lane and used to walk morning and evening to a manhole near Jean Easter's house to turn on/ off the water.

much whatever you like. No need to spend a great deal of money – much can be achieved by choosing accessories such as candles, crackers and flowers with care. 5. General displays There was a time when chains of coloured paper hung from corner to corner of the room were the height of Christmas chic. This may no longer be the case – but home-made decorations can still be a wonderful thing. It could be as simple as a row of chunky candles, wound round with ivy, a wooden bowl filled with clove-studded oranges, or a string of white fairy lights clustered in a glass vase. And last but by no means least, involve the children in making paper chains, bunting or felt cut-outs for that charmingly wonky, home-made look. News from Winchester and Chandlers Ford MP Steve Brine November is birthday month in the Brine household; Emily is four this year (going on 21) and William is now one. What excitement we have in store as the much worked upon birthday and Christmas list is revealed to the bank of Mum and Dad. Since I last wrote for the CF Directory, I have visited the Southern Cross Care Home in Chandler’s Ford (where they are understandably anxious for the future) and the brilliant Caterpillar Hill Children’s Centre above Chandler’s Ford Library. I even read the morning story (pictured) which was a real home from home for me! I have also welcomed hundreds of new university students to the area at the annual ritual that is Fresher’s Fair. I have concluded my 2011 Summer Tour with a special ‘street surgery’ at the Fryern Arcade on Winchester Road. I was joined by local Borough councillors, Judith Grajewski and Godfrey Olson and we were treated to a glorious late Summer morning to chat with the good people I am so lucky to represent.
I also dropped in on a new local business recently which specialises in Sri Lankan food. Haleema and her family run Sri Lankan Cuisine from their home Pantheon Road and hold monthly supper evenings at the Forte Tea Rooms in Winchester. It was good to see the spirit of entrepreneurialism thriving in Chandler’s Ford and I wish them well. In other news; I have met with a new local organisation ‘Green Win’ to work through the detail of how together we will roll-out the Government’s Green Deal and insulate thousands of homes across our area. You
can see more about this on my website. I have visited the Winchester Samaritans, big local employer Denplan and the world famous Watercress Line. I was also really pleased recently to open the new visitor centre at Winchester Prison. You can see so much more of my work locally - and on your behalf in Westminster - at www. stevebrine.com or you can call 01962 791110. You can also see many of the above stories featured in my Winter edition of The Chandler’s Ford which will be coming through local doors throughout November.

Freecycle®
Although small items are always welcomed by the charity shops, they don’t usually take electrical goods, larger items or pieces of furniture. However you can use The Freecycle® Network (online only) to find a new home for your unwanted clutter. This worldwide initiative – with local groups - is a way of giving away goods which you may not need but are still usable by others. The listings are text only so you don’t need to worry about pictures, and people will mail you via the site if they are interested. You choose one of the replies and the goods are usually collected within 24 hours – often much more quickly so it’s a very efficient way of recycling. It’s also a good place to go if you want something, although you have to have offered something before you can place a ‘wanted’ listing. You have to register as a Yahoo user first and then you can post messages which must be in the format Offered: Short Description, Location e.g. Offered: Portable TV, Chandlers Ford http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ EastleighFreecycle/messages
