Dear Neighbours We had a lovely Christmas here in the Houston household. We went away for the week before Christmas to the French Alps to go skiing. Two weeks before we went there wasn’t so much as a flake in any ski resort – as one of my contacts out there said “We’ve had more snow on the ground in July than we had at the beginning of December”. But then about 10 days before we went the snow came and then didn’t stop for nearly three weeks. It didn’t actually make for great skiing in truth as the visibility was poor, but the whole place had a truly wonderful Christmassy feeling with a log fire burbling in the grate each night. We went to Kevin’s sister for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. They were going away on Boxing Day so elected to have the ‘big dinner’ on Christmas Eve, which turned out to be a great idea. Not having to worry about cooking and clearing up on the day itself meant everyone could be much more relaxed, enjoy their gifts and most importantly enjoy each other’s company. And it made Christmas seem a little longer too. It has set a precedent for every year in future. Then on to the sales. I don’t like shopping at all but I do have to buy new clothes now and then, and there were some fabulous bargains to be had both on the High Street and on the internet. I figure if you have to go shopping, why not benefit from lower prices? Unfortunately too much food and not enough exercise means paying the price in January. We are the other side of the winter solstice now, meaning summer isn’t that far away and it’s time to start shedding the winter padding in anticipation. Finally, we’ve had a makeover of the magazine so you’ll notice a different look to the magazine. And just a special thanks to local resident Stephen Harvey for our front cover and the super Hampshire Heritage feature this month (P72). Tania.

THE CHANDLERS FORD DIRECTORY MONTHLY FEATURE

January Sales There’s a wonderful Charles Addams cartoon from the New Yorker of God knows how many years ago showing a sale at a big department store, where a huge poster advertises “Genuine reductions!!!” There’s a queue of normal-sized people waiting to go in...and a line of tiny little people coming out. Well, January sales can be pretty nightmarish, if not perhaps that nightmarish. But the crowds, the elbowing, the fighting over the priced-to-sell designer schmutter... not my cup of tea, but some people seem to thrive on it. It’s either the hunter-gatherer instinct resurfacing, or just a submerged taste for violence temporarily legitimised, but many shoppers love the scrum so much they even queue overnight with sleeping-bag and thermos of hot soup. Wikipedia having for once failed me, I’ve been unable to track down the first-ever January sale in history. But there’s a linen draper in Philadelphia that has been holding one since 1878: maybe not the world’s first, but a date that fits nicely into the history of department stores where January sales surely originated. It’s all about Christmas. This wasn’t a big commercial event until the second half of the 19th century – in Dickens’s A Christmas Carol of 1843, it’s almost a normal working day. But by that time major cities were already beginning to sprout department stores: Kendals of Manchester in 1836, Bainbridge’s of Newcastle in 1838, Harrod’s of Knightsbridge in 1849, Lewis’s of Liverpool in 1856, Whiteley’s of Bayswater in 1863 and so on. Whiteley’s always claimed to be the first true department store, but Bainbridge’s had first used the term in 1849: you pays your money, you takes your choice. If anybody can be nailed as being responsible for the commercialisation of Christmas, it was these big department stores. And the January sale was an obvious way of ridding themselves of the season’s surplus stock – not just Christmas consumables, but winter wear in general. Little by little the January sales became more than just a festive afterthought but major events in their own right, and an important injection of cash for the stores before the latewinter doldrums set in. By the dawn of the TV advertising era, some stores gave their sale more publicity than Christmas itself. And nothing seems to have slowed the juggernaut

4

w w w.c f d i r e c t o r y.c o.u k

since: at the height of the Harrod’s January sale last year, the tills were taking £20,000 a minute! (Strictly, since 2002, Harrod’s January sale has been its “Winter sale”, since its opening moved to Boxing Day or the day after – so, no nice long Christmas break for Harrod’s staff.) And I am now told by a friend with retail experience that the January sales are no longer even primarily concerned with clearing surplus winter stock, but that fresh stock is ordered especially for the event. Now, I’m no businessman, but this seems dodgy to me. Don’t sale goods have to be displayed for 28 consecutive days at the “established price” before they can be displayed as sale goods? I suppose the stores’ legal eagles have found a way round the Consumer Protection Act 1987, but I bet that trading standards officers have pretty itchy trigger fingers come January. And anyway, if they can make a decent profit selling goods at half-price in January, why not do the same in the other 11 months? I think we should be told... by Ted Bruning

Jumping that Final Hurdle With the Olympics taking place this year, in this column I would ask that you please allow me to indulge in an athletic metaphor. Imagine a long distance runner who has been preparing for the most highly prestigious race of his career. He looks after himself, watches what he eats, trains hard, works with his coach and the big day soon arrives. He starts the race, is doing well and rather enjoying himself. Lap after lap he is feeling great and his fans and supporters are cheering him on. Then, in the final circuit, he slows down, stops and sits down metres away from the finish line for no apparent reason. How do all the people involved in his life feel? Confused? Angry? Betrayed? Now if we take that race to represent our everyday lives, I often meet the relatives of people who have passed away with very similar emotions to the supporters of that long distance runner. Why? Well, an individual may have worked hard, looked after his/her family, been supported in old age, but then, having failed to make a Will, caused confusion, devastation and emotional carnage amongst loved ones after they died. In research conducted by Standard Life last year, it was discovered that two thirds of 35 to 44 year olds had not made a Will and neither had two fifths of 45 to 54 years olds or over a fifth of all over 65 years olds. Over half of those people gave the reason for not having done so as simply

‘not having got around to doing it yet.’ This is really worrying. Maybe some people think the cost of making a Will is a barrier, but the legal fees involved in sorting out estates when someone dies ‘intestate’ can be more expensive for the family than the Inheritance Tax bill. Dying without having a Will in place can put an enormous stress on loved ones. When you die intestate the law sets out the rules as to who can deal with a person’s estate and what is to happen to the property. Regardless of the deceased’s wishes, a spouse or registered civil partner will not automatically inherit an estate - some will go to relatives. There is also no provision for unmarried partners, even if they have been cohabiting. A Will needs to be accurate, unambiguous and comprehensive. It also needs to be updated if there are changes in circumstance (such as divorce, children or finances). Without it, you cannot decide how much money each of your family members gets, state who will become guardians of your children, leave possessions to friends or family or anything to charity. People spend their lives trying to provide the best they can for their loved ones, but so many seem to be falling at that final hurdle by not protecting their futures when they are no longer here. Like the long distance runner, for all the people who have helped and supported you, you owe it to them finish that race properly.

THE CHANDLERS FORD DIRECTORY BOOKS

New Year, New You! My boss gave me a self-help book for my 29th birthday. I was so appalled that someone had deemed me in need of ‘help’ that I quit and went to Australia. So you can say what you like about them, but they really do work… one way or another! Whether it’s a new diet, relationship or job, there’s a book that claims it’ll help you achieve it. What better way to kick-start 2012 than turning over a new page, and a new leaf? Feel the Fear And Do It Anyway. Susan Jeffers They say a life lived in fear is a life half-lived and Feel the Fear is based on the principle that doing something that scares us, is a good thing. It promises to show you how to ‘turn fear and indecision into confidence and action’. Packed with real-life examples of people who have let fear dominate them, this is a very grounded and level-headed book. There are lots of practical tips and activities to help you start to face your fear, and end it. How to Win Friends and Influence People. Dale Carnegie One of the most successful self-help books of all time and not to be confused with the film ‘How to Lose Friends and Alienate People’, which could get you fired. Although the original was published in the 1930s, this master class in how to handle other people continues to be relevant. With the exception of Willy Loman, there has

14

w w w.c f d i r e c t o r y.c o.u k

never been a greater advocate for being ‘wellliked’ than Dale Carnegie. Why Men Don’t Listen and Women Can’t Read Maps. Allan and Barbara Pease I was going to go for the obvious ‘Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus’ here but decided instead to go for the comical pairing of husband and wife team Allan and Barbara Pease. With chapters entitled ‘Women are TouchyFeely’ and ‘Why Men Are So Thickskinned’ you know you’re going to get an amusing and enlightening read. If this is ‘pop psychology’ then call me Frasier Crane. Let me point out here that my Dad mumbles so much we can’t hear HIM and Mum’s an excellent map-reader. Chicken Soup for the Soul: 101 Stories to Open the Heart and Rekindle the Spirit. Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen The brainchild of motivational speakers, Canfield and Hansen, the premise is simple:

heart-warming stories will make us feel better, just as chicken soup warms the cockles in the winter. The original book sold millions of copies and spawned a series that’s been translated into 54 languages. We must all be suckers for a happy ending. Enjoy it curled up with a bowl of soup and you will be joy personified come February. This Book Will Save Your Life. A.M. Homes Ok so it’s a fictional satire rather than self-help novel, but it most certainly IS life-affirming. Written with wonderfully quirky Los Angeles as a backdrop, it’s been hailed as an antidote to modern life. When reclusive stockbroker Richard Novak ends up in the emergency room, he’s forced to open his eyes to the world around him. It’s the perfect accompaniment for welcoming in the New Year and seizing 2012 with gusto.

and in the kitchen...

The Italian Diet. Gino D’Acampo The Dukan diet claims ‘three million French women can’t be wrong’ but I say, one gorgeous Italian man who encourages us to eat cheese and pasta…is definitely right! The diet book that looks like a recipe book, this is all about eating healthily without depriving yourself of the things you love the most.

A Panda’s Lament I’m a little panda, and my keeper’s very vexed, He’s convinced I need a girlfriend; says it’s time that I had sex, He pushes pandas in my den, it’s really just not right, I prefer a bit of peace and quiet; a nice long sleep at night, Oops, here comes another one, this time I’ve had enough, I’m not too sure where this one’s been; she’s looking pretty rough, She seems to be quite keen on me; I find it such a pain, She’s come all the way from China; she can go straight back again, Her markings are just dreadful; Chi Chi’s really not my type, Us pandas are particular, it’s not just black and white, And finally I’ve realised that indeed it’s very true, I just don’t want to reproduce....I’d rather eat bamboo. ©Jan Jack’s Perfect Verse 2011 www.perfectverse.co.uk

THE CHANDLERS FORD DIRECTORY GARDENING

Winter Perfume Plants There’s no escaping the fact that the winter months can be a little lacklustre in the garden, sometimes even a bit gloomy. However carefully you plant your flowerbeds and borders, the number of brightly coloured plants for winter performance is rather limited. But don’t forget that one of the most important ingredients in a winter garden is perfume – it’s certainly something which can transform my mood in an instant, especially when I’m out in the garden. So at this time of year, think scent, as there are a few really brilliant winter perfume plants and there’s a good chance that they’ll be readily available in garden centres and nurseries right now, often in pride of place. The Witch Hazels or Hamamelis are one of my favourite winter flowerers. With their unusual oriental-looking yellow, orange or bronzy-red spidery flowers on bare branches they look stunning and provided they are kept adequately moist during drier weather they should thrive, especially if you have an acidic soil. If not, they also look good in large tubs such as half-barrels. But of course looks are not everything and the perfume of the witch hazels is what really makes them such an asset - sweet, spicy and wonderfully good at wafting around the garden. For best results, ensure the roots are just moist at all times and position the shrub somewhere that you can see as well as smell it. Various colours are available, in shades of brightest orange through to rich burgundy. Wintersweet or Chimonanthus is another great shrub for winter. The branches are covered with creamy to yellow coloured multi-petalled flowers with a seriously sweet perfume. Like the witch hazel it’s quite slow growing and doesn’t need to have a huge amount of space allocated to it. This

means it’s a perfect choice for the smaller garden, but make sure you consider carefully where to plant it, so that you can enjoy every aspect of its display. If you like a bit of variegated foliage then try the Daphne odora ‘Aureo-marginata’, which has classic purple-pink clusters of flowers, a very strong perfume and leaves which are typically green and leathery but with a bright yellow leaf margin. It can be a little temperamental, but after its first year a Daphne generally settles in well and you won’t regret buying it. Again, it can do well in a really large tub or half barrel - for this I would suggest a loam-based John Innes type compost mixed with about 30% loam-free multi-purpose compost to ensure that drainage remains good. The Viburnums may be a shrub you think of as a summer flowering plant, but go for varieties such as Viburnum x bodnantense ‘Dawn’ and the bright pink, trumpet-shaped flowers not only look good but also provide your garden with a sumptuous ...Continued on page 24

perfume. Planted in a sheltered spot, it won’t let you down. Mahonias with their holly-like leaves can be a trifle spiky but when they are in flower their brightest yellow spikes are really eye-catching and Mahonia japonica produces one of the sweetest perfumes you could wish for right through from the middle of winter to early spring. If you prefer one with more upright flowers, go for Mahonia x media ‘Charity’. Mahonias are good in part shade or full sun. Their only downside is their leaves which can be a real hazard if the mahonia has been planted in the wrong place - once it grows the stems protrude in to nearby paths, seating areas or thoroughfares. Another favourite of mine is the winter flowering honeysuckles. They are not as showy as their summer flowering relations, but definitely a plant I’d hate to be without. The bare stems are covered with small white-cream flowers which produce a tremendously sweet, spicy aroma both night and day. Unlike the summer flowering species those that have winter appeal are not

climbers, but informal shrubs. And finally, don’t forget the Sarcococcas or winter box. With their small, pretty but inconspicuous flowers they may not instantly leap out and draw attention to themselves, but the perfume of those tiny flowers is tremendous and really strong, making them a great winter flowering shrub that I’d recommend you try. by Pippa Greenwood

The Handy Household - The Labours of Lemons We all know they go nicely with a G&T, but did you know that lemons contain enough acid to ruin the lives of most bacteria found in our kitchens? So, whether you want to sanitise a chopping board, disinfect a counter top or mop the floor, lemons are a great way to keep our homes clean and healthy. Lemons also make it easy to clean a microwave, simply place a bowl of water and lemon juice in the appliance and warm for a few minutes. The steam acts on any stains or lingering smells and once you’ve removed the bowl, you can simply wipe the microwave clean. When it comes to laundry, lemon juice is also brilliant for brightening your faded whites. You can either add it to your washing cycle, or soak delicates in a solution of lemon juice and water to create a mild bleach effect. What’s more, tough food or blood stains stand little chance against this wonder product – simply squeeze the juice from half a lemon over the stain and let it soak in for around 20 minutes, before rinsing with water. And the benefits don’t stop there, as lemon juice is well known for helping to keep us clean and healthy too. Sore throat? Mix lemon juice with honey and warm water to make a soothing drink. Garlicky and onion-smelling fingers can also be thoroughly cleaned by rubbing over with half a lemon and rinsing your hair in lemon juice can even help to combat chlorinegreen hair after swimming. So, why not swap your harsh chemical products for the natural and economical power of lemons?

THE CHANDLERS FORD DIRECTORY LOCAL NEWS & VIEWS

The Way I See It Keith's next challenge He’s already made Eastleigh one of Britain’s trend-setting councils and now he wants to be boss of the county council, too. Liberal Democrat Keith House is confident of grabbing a “substantial number” of seats from the county’s ruling Conservatives at next year’s elections. That would put him on course to be leader of both authorities a few years from now. Cllr House, 46, is in touch with the Lib Dem top brass in London and sees Nick Clegg several times a year. After A-levels at Barton Peveril, he worked at party HQ, where three rapid promotions saw him rise in just 18 months from recruitment team worker to become the party’s chief fundraiser. It may seem surprising that such a high-flyer is beavering away in political backwaters like Eastleigh and Hampshire. A golden future at Westminster once seemed certain but, after becoming uncharacteristically tongue-tied in a disastrous 1994 Newsnight interview, Mr House abandoned his Commons ambition. Under his leadership, political gains for Lib Dems at Eastleigh have been spectacular. The party now dominates the council, with all but six of the 44 seats. Over two decades, election after election, he has steadily built up the Lib Dem majority. The Tories, who ran the borough for years, now have just four seats. Labour have none. The Tory group leader, Chandlers Ford’s Godfrey Olson, thinks domination by one party is unhealthy for democracy. Cllr Olson accuses Cllr House of running “almost a one-man dictatorship”.

32

w w w.c f d i r e c t o r y.c o.u k

Mr House says his party merely react to what voters want. “We listen. We produce what they want, and we do that while keeping council tax below inflation.” He says on-going rejuvenation of Eastleigh town centre is an example, with Chandlers Ford residents increasingly using the town’s new cinema, instead of driving into Southampton for entertainment. Imminent doubling of the size of Sainsbury’s at Eastleigh will attract more Chandlers Ford people, he says. He has brought in innovations before most other UK councils, including twin bins and garden waste bags. At the Winchester-based county council, he has been leader of the minority Lib Dems for two years. He plans to win a majority by telling voters he will involve more volunteers, talk to young people and be more business-friendly. He also plans to introduce area committees, to take decisions at local meetings around the county. And he thinks devolving power to district and parish councils improves public services. “You get better decisions for less money.” Mr House admits to taking risks in his career and Mr Olson says he is now taking a risk with public money, by buying the Rose Bowl cricket ground and building a hotel there. Cost to the borough: £38m. Mr House insists it’s a safe investment which will make money for the council, as well as creating 500 jobs, boosting the local economy and helping Hampshire Cricket. by Gordon Moore

THE CHANDLERS FORD DIRECTORY MOTORING

How I bought a

Porsche 911 from nothing

It’s something every petrol head dreams of: Trading up from nothing to a super car by buying and selling a few motors in their spare time. But instead of dreaming, last year I decided to start doing it. The plan was simple – reinvest the cash from each sale into the next vehicle until I bought a 911. And to encourage people to help, we would sell the Porsche and hand all the money to charity. The first cars to kick my challenge off were both donated by dealers. I was handed the keys to a VW Golf MkIII by Motorpoint and M25 Audi gave us an S-reg A3. The A3 wasn’t in the best of health and we were forced to sell it on eBay for less than we’d originally planned at £790. The Golf went to a local man for £250 on eBay. The second step involved spending £985.25 on an 02-reg Ford Fiesta. This one hung around longer than we’d hoped. When we eventually reduced the price from £2,500 to £2,150, it was snapped up by a little old lady. Then came our masterstroke – the Hyundai i10 football car. Made by a renowned car artist to celebrate the car manufacturer’s support of the World Cup, the i10 had artificial grass covering every panel and plastic grass seats, not to mention a giant football and goal posts grafted on to the exterior. After a whirl of publicity, which saw it feature in The Daily Telegraph and the BBC news, we put it on eBay. It sold for £5,005 to a Hyundai dealer who planned to use it for publicity. Buoyed by our success we contacted another manufacturer and scored three Mazda MX-5s, one of which had been reversed into a lamppost. With the help of a mechanic mate, we soon had the two good cars roadworthy. We let him keep the broken one as payment and sold the other two for £2,220

profit. Next up was a 03-model Mercedes CLK, which was bought for £6,000 but needed a trip back to mechanic Matt - not only did he fix it; he also sold it to his receptionist’s mum! A further £2,250 profit was banked. Citroen then stepped into the fray with a C4 Grand Picasso. The 58-plater was on their fleet and we snapped it up for just £8,110. Unfortunately we couldn’t find a buyer. Eventually a dealer offered £8,000, but instead of cash, offered part exes off his site for the same value. Knowing cheaper cars were easier to sell we picked a Volvo 940, a Skoda Fabia and a Renault Scenic. Not our smartest move as we only shifted them for a paltry combined profit of £775. That left £900 in the dealer’s bank account which we spent on a gold Ford Ka, which was sold in a week for £1,700. Finally we’d reached the magic £10,000 mark and had enough to buy an early 996-shape 911. The right one popped up on Auto Trader and after negotiations I bought R97 RRK for £9,900. We now plan to get our new baby fettled by Porsche, polished up ready for sale and then eventually, after 13 trades and 15 months, we can hand over a fat cheque to BEN, the automotive industry charity we’ve been working so hard for.

Independent experts in Sales and Lettings

Downsizing January 2012

by Pamela Cormacey

An article written in “Science Daily March 2010” quotes “That people in developed nations are living in good health as much as a decade longer than their parents did”. Although this is an amazing step forward in scientific terms, it can present problems for our ageing population, as they often own large homes which become increasingly difficult to maintain both financially and physically. Jonathan Rees Property Services has the expertise to help you through the transition from the sale of your property to downsizing to either a smaller bungalow/apartment, or alternatively Independent Retirement/Assisted Living. We are currently working in close co-operation with McCarthy & Stone, who are the Market Leaders for Independent Retirement Living and who are currently building a new ‘Assisted Living’ Development in Eastleigh, which will provide excellent accommodation of one and two bedroom luxury apartments. This site is conveniently located on Leigh Road and is within easy reach of Eastleigh Town Centre and Mainline Railway Station. Built exclusively for the over 70s ‘Assisted Living’ enables you to retain independent home ownership, without the worries and responsibilities of a house and garden and gives you the extra benefit of round-the-clock support, should you need it. Everything is designed for your comfort and convenience and with security often a particular concern for the older homebuyer, this is well catered for with advanced security systems and CCTV cameras at the main entrance to the development, together with 24 hr emergency call service. All apartments have a fitted kitchen, a level access shower, in addition to a bath and full wheelchair access. Facilities include lunch served daily in the waitress service restaurant, a laundry and residents’ lounge, where you can socialise with fellow residents, if you so wish. There is also a hotel style guest suite where visiting friends and family can stay, a function room and lifts to all floors. One hour of domestic assistance is provided every week as an integral part of the service charge. Assistance can be given with day-to-day chores such as cleaning, washing, ironing and shopping. Additional domestic assistance can be purchased on request, tailored to meet individual needs, either on a short or long term basis. Personal care can be arranged to suit individual residents’ needs by the on-site care team. As your needs change, personal care can be increased or decreased to meet your needs. If you are thinking of downsizing into Retirement Living in 2012, or just wanting to move to a smaller apartment or bungalow, then please do contact Pamela Cormacey, who is a specialist in Independent Retirement Living and will be delighted to give you a free market appraisal of your home and, if required, more information about the new McCarthy & Stone Assisted Living development at Eastleigh. THE CHANDLERS FORD DIRECTORY LOCAL HISTORY

Part Two

Memories Of

My Childhood In

Chandlers Ford 1932 – 1950

At the Bournemouth Road end of Castle Lane, Mr Burt the milkman kept his horse and cart and he used to feed the horse by means of a nose bag and the horse would toss up his head to get the last grains of corn. Other war-time memories are of my Father who was a member of the ARP getting up at night everytime there was an air raid and going on duty. He and some others used to sit in an empty Hants and Dorset bus parked on the carpark adjoining Miss Rice's sweet shop opposite Castle Lane (I believe it is now an Insurance Brokers office). On one occasion the Local Policeman was riding his bike when the bicycle bell was hit by a piece of shrapnel - a lucky escape for him. By this time I was going to Peter Symonds School in Winchester and I can remember it in June 1944 at the time of D-Day. Troops were in convoy to Southampton Docks and used to throw us waiting children their loose change. At the time of D-Day a soldier was stationed in a tent at the corner of Leigh Road and Bournemouth Road to direct the traffic so there was no hold up to the convoys going to Southampton. A local resident, Mrs Moxham used to allow him to come to her house to have a bath. I used to travel to Winchester by Hants and Dorset bus and remember that at the Hursley Road junction there was a London Transport Bus with an open stair case to the top deck. We school boys used to jump off the Hants & Dorset bus and tried to get on the London

50

w w w.c f d i r e c t o r y.c o.u k

Transport Bus. The site now occupied by ASDA on Hut Hill was a prison camp for German prisoners. Now some rather disconnected jottings. In the1930's we used to have our milk delivered by James Hann and Son of Eastleigh. This was the dairy that Benny Hill worked for. We had our groceries from W.Pink & Son of Eastleigh who used to come and take the order and deliver later in the week. We had meat ftom Collins of Eastleigh. Bread came from Prices Bakery of Eastleigh (now Mr Kipling I believe) and they made slab cake for Marks & Spencer and we used to have it delivered.. There was Mr.Merryweather, the chimney sweep, who lived in a ramshackle house on the north side of Shaftesbury Road near the junction with Ford Road. I used to have my hair cut by Mr Eydeman who I believe was a former butcher and had a house in Station Lane near the station. He cut hair for 3d and used to blow down my neck to remove loose hair instead of using a soft brush. The other person who cut hair was Mr Trim on Fryern Hill - the name Mr.Trim was very appropriate for a hairdresser. In 1940 we had children from Portsmouth billeted on us. One of the children was the son of the helmsman of the GosportPortsmouth ferry. In about 1944 I used to have riding lessons at a stable in Lordswood and used to cycle down Castle Lane and up through the woods past the Clump Inn (now the Chilworth Arms). by Roger Hinxman

THE CHANDLERS FORD DIRECTORY HOME & INTERIORS

Decorating a child’s bedroom is all about flexibility – and with a bit of flair it’s easy to create a space that’s as practical as it is imaginative, and that doesn’t cost the earth

Child’s Play When decorating a child’s bedroom, remember the three Fs: fun, function and flexibility. Children need stimulation – though too much brightly coloured plastic will make your eyes ache – and organisation, so that you can occasionally see the floor. But it’s flexibility that’s the most important. Unless you really want to redecorate every couple of years, keep the walls, floors and major items of furniture relatively neutral, just changing the accessories, such as rugs, cushion covers, bean bags, blinds and lampshades, as necessary. That way you’ll be able to create a room that will last right through from babyhood until your little darling leaves home. Nurseries The younger the child, the more ‘stuff’ they seem to have, and for a newborn storage is all-important. You could buy a set of free-standing shelves (if the shelves can be raised and lowered when necessary, so much the better) or fix some ‘floating’ shelves to the walls. Better still, if you have a period house with alcoves either side of a chimney breast, consider turning them into conceal-all built-in wardrobes. Most baby toys can be stored in colourful, soft plastic buckets, or in drawstring bags hung from the back of the door or a peg rail. Avoid buying furniture that’s very baby-specific – he or she won’t notice it and it will date very quickly. Instead, choose well-made, simple pieces that will still be useable (even if they have to be given a lick of paint) in decades to come. Arrange the room to suit you – middle-of-the-night visits are even less

Simple white furnishings will last years and can be accessorised to suit your child’s age. Humphrey’s Corner cot bed, £300, and Brompton furniture, all Mothercare, 0845 330 4030; mothercare.com.

fun when you stub your toe on a sticking-out chair, and instant access to the cot/bed, storage and toys will make your life easier. As for décor, choose soft colours and ensure your lighting isn’t too glarey. Fitting a dimmer is a great idea – usually a quick and inexpensive job for a qualified electrician. Older children The storage theme continues as your children grow older, so increase the options (and avoid spending a fortune) by thinking laterally and visiting junk-shops for chests of drawers, blanket boxes and the like. Make sure they’re stable and don’t have any splinters; then simply sand and paint, changing any knobs and handles if necessary. For storage of small toys, felt tip pens and so on, use washed-up tins (no sharp edges, mind), ice cream tubs or shoe boxes, perhaps covered in offcuts of wallpaper for a unified look. Now’s the time to consider a raised sleeper bed – children of this age need plenty of space in which to play. Keep furniture to the edges of the room, so there’s plenty of clear floor area in the middle. And for decorative interest, how about

fixing a large magnetic board to one wall, or painting a wall or a cupboard door with blackboard paint? Wall stickers are great fun, or you could hang artists’s canvas painted in bright blocks of colour, or else camouflage nets, bunting, maps or flags. String fairy lights across the ceiling, or glue lightweight plastic toys in formation across it; on wooden floorboards, meanwhile, it wouldn’t be hard to paint paw prints, a race track or a giant game of snakes and ladders. Teenagers Teenagers’ rooms need to be a combination of cosy den, chill-out zone and study area. You’ll need to provide zones for homework and hobbies, socialising and sleepovers – and good lighting in each area is essential. As well as general, overhead lighting, desk and bedside lamps, consider adding something decorative such as a colourchanging LED light or a ‘starlit’ ceiling using fibre optics. Just like anyone working from home, teenagers need a good quality swivel

Older children’s bedrooms need a chill-out zone as well as somewhere to study and sleep. Bean chair and stool, £79, Found Home Store, 01227 807797; foundhomestore.co.uk.

chair, a spacious desk, plenty of plug sockets, an internet connection and storage space for books, files and so on. This could be in the form of built-in shelving or standalone units that can be taken with you when you move. As for relaxing, a sofa, some bean bags or even a storage ottoman will come in handy. A well-lit dressing table (this could double up with the desk) is important, too, as is a good mirror. If you want your teenager to be organised, add a pin board or magnetic board on the wall, an accessible laundry bin and some open-topped storage for all those bits and pieces that you’d prefer not to end up on the floor. by Katherine Sorrell

THE CHANDLERS FORD DIRECTORY A PROVERBIAL LIFE...

The straw that broke the camel’s back...

Cracked There’s a broken tile in my bathroom that’s about to cause a major incident. This isn’t any old tile; this is the tile that despite my best efforts has remained broken for three years. This is the tile that may just signal the end of my marriage, my descent into screaming madness and the end of peace in this household. This is the tile that haunts me with its broken corner and cracked face. Over the years repeated requests to replace this tile have elicited a variety of responses from Mr Fixit (otherwise known as Husband). Promises have been made to fix it: ‘Tomorrow, at the weekend, when I get a spare minute.’ Multiple reasons have been given as to why this tile has not been sorted out: a lost tile cutter, a lack of adhesive, a slip of memory, a dearth of daylight (apparently tile fixing can only occur in optimum weather conditions). I’ve even offered to do the job myself. This was met with snorts of laughter and comments about my inability to change a light bulb; which is unfair as I can change light bulbs in an emergency...as long as there is a step ladder to hand and someone to catch me if I fall. I’ve been a reasonable woman – so far. I’ve left a respectable interval between tile fixing requests; I haven’t tutted, rolled my eyes, muttered under my breath or screamed at the top of my lungs - yet. In the normal course of events a broken tile wouldn’t overly bother me, but after three years I feel I’ve got just cause for grievance.

66

w w w.c f d i r e c t o r y.c o.u k

Therefore, I have now decided to take matters totally, completely and utterly into my own hands. I’m going to take unilateral action to bring ‘Tilegate’ to a satisfactory conclusion – I’m going to get someone in to do it. This is something I’ve previously offered to do, only to be met with looks of absolute incredulity and horror that I would even consider such disloyalty to this home’s Mr Fixit. However, I’ve been driven to take this action by a nugget of information that came my way yesterday. My Mr Fixit has offered to do some wallpapering in our son’s home. Now, not only has he offered to do it but he’s set a firm date for work to commence. I’m dumbfounded, flabbergasted and livid. I don’t begrudge our son his father’s help; however, I want this tile fixed! Therefore, I’ve already phoned up a very nice man who advertises locally. He’s coming next week to replace the tile, and he’s also going to have a look at the carpet that needs fixing down, the sticking door in the kitchen and the loose blind in the living room. I’m on a bit of a roll now. I have no intention of telling my beloved Mr Fixit that another man will be trespassing on his territory. Instead I intend to wait until he notices that the offending tile has been replaced; then I shall casually say: ‘Oh yes, I got someone in to do it.’ I can’t wait. by A. O’Brien

THE CHANDLERS FORD DIRECTORY HUMOUR

The Irresistible

Rise of Posh ‘n’ Roll I am on a mini-break. I know, I know - I’m supposed to be in a rock ‘n’ roll band, and there really is nothing edgy about mini-breaks. Problem is, of course, that in addition to being in a rock ‘n’ roll band, I am also (how do I put this rather delicate admission?) a little bit middle class. And when you’re a little bit middle class, there are some things that you simply have to do. Minibreaks, dinner parties, parma ham, suspiciously expensive crisps. That’s not a matter of opinion, it’s scientific fact. Traditionally, musicians have done everything possible to hide their middle-classness. But things seem to have changed in recent years, thanks primarily to the massive global dominance of Britain’s archetypal Middle Class Rockstar, Chris Martin. I like Chris Martin. He doesn’t pretend to be the kind of person who drives limousines into swimming pools, he just makes nice music and tries not to bother anybody. Another of my favourite posh rock bands is Keane. Tom Chaplin, their erstwhile chubby-faced lead singer, looks like he should be standing behind the counter in a prep school tuck shop, or being dragged around John Lewis by a stressed yummy mummy in a wax jacket. Their music is sublime (in my humble opinion) but, in this country at least, they are hopelessly uncool. However, in the States the lads from Keane are not only considered genuinely hip, but they get to hang out with rappers and, you know, drop it like it’s hot (or whatever it is that rappers do). Being a toff, you see, gets you a long way in America. I discovered this myself back in 2007, during a gig in some obscure New Jersey town by the name of Chicken-Spit, or Scuzzville (I forget the exact name). Halfway through my inter-song ramble, a teenager in the audience interrupted me by yelling out ‘Say budder!’. After a short exchange during which I ascertained that he really did just want me to say the word ‘butter’, I obliged and this resulted in absolute bedlam in the crowd. There I was, responsible for rendering a roomful of kids absolutely helpless with joy, merely by exercising a well-rounded Home Counties accent. Extraordinary. Meanwhile, back across the pond, the trend for posh rockstars has actually started to get a little out of hand. Now, in order to become a mainstay in the UK Top 40, you’d better be not just middle class but actively upper-middle class. Florence

Mini-break heaven - poached duck egg anyone?

& The Machine, Laura Marling, Lily Allen – each of them boasts an education that will have cost their parents somewhere in the region of £150,000. My band has performed at a number of high-society private functions in the last couple of years and, believe me, if I never meet another intoxicated banker by the name of Rufus or Chad with outspoken claims to being ‘like, best buds with the keyboard player out of Mumford & Sons’, I shall die a much happier man. Anyhow, enough of all that. As I was saying, I am on a mini-break. In the Cotswolds. And I really must dash because I need to take the roasted woodpigeon out of the Aga. Just kidding. It’s actually a grouse. Chris plays piano in South London power-pop band The Lightyears. The Lightyears, voted the UK’s BEST POP/ROCK ACT at the Indy Awards, have played Wembley Stadium, toured across four continents and released a record with Sting’s producer. THE CHANDLERS FORD DIRECTORY HOME

Working from home I drink a lot more coffee these days. Three or four times a day I find myself in the kitchen spooning instant into a mug, whereas there used to be a time when my morning fix (three teaspoons for that great big wake-up jolt) was all the coffee I drank. It’s not that I’m a caffeine junkie: actually I’m on the decaf now. Much to nobody’s surprise, my Type 2 has arrived as an entirely proper consequence of years of eating and drinking far too much and doing far too little; and as caffeine (so my low-carb diet book informs me, whether trustworthily or not I don’t know) stimulates the production of insulin, I have switched to decaf. I can’t say that I can tell the difference. Nor am I a coffee snob. I’ve always drunk coffee in preference to tea, but only because when I was a teenager I read a book called “How to be Bond” which pointed out that James Bond always drank coffee, never tea, because while coffee was sophisticated tea was common. But I’ve always been fine with instant. One boss of mine would only ever drink “real” coffee, which smelt divine but didn’t taste as good as it smelt. Also, it’s such a faff, whether filter or cafetière, and the end result isn’t so much of an improvement as to justify the labour (to my palate at least). Of course, the real stuff comes out if we have guests round, but other than that the pot gathers dust on the topmost kitchen shelf and the coffee itself is many, many months beyond its bestbefore date. (And mind you, that same book pointed out that Bond never drank beer either, and for much the same reason. I was never tempted to follow this example and took enthusiastically to beer long before I was actually allowed to. And anyway, I do drink tea now – I had a bad

bout of bronchitis last winter and felt a sudden craving for sweet tea. Nothing could have been more soothing.) No, the reason why I drink so much more coffee nowadays is that basically I’m a lazy hound and always used to dodge the coffee round in the office by pretending that I didn’t want one. The downside of this was that I couldn’t sneak off and make myself a coffee when I actually did want one, so I did without. It’s not entirely laziness, though. Some of the offices I’ve worked in over the years have had kitchens of such unspeakable vileness that you wouldn’t want to go into them, let alone drink anything that came out of them. Washing up, in an office kitchen, is nobody’s job and so is never done. I well remember the kitchen at the old Morning Advertiser offices in Brixton. It crouched in a corner of what had been a huge printworks, all cavernous and echoing since the actual printing had been contracted out years before. But when the printers departed it seems they left their mugs behind, still halffull and never washed since, and all sprouting caps of foul grey mould like beards on corpses. Even the sign that said “please wash your own mug” was mouldy. I am not especially tickle-stomached but I would never, in a million years, have put anything that came out of that hell-hole anywhere near my digestive tract. Anyway, one thing I have discovered to be true, although previously I’d pooh-poohed it, is that coffee tastes better if it’s not made with boiling water. So I think I’ll go and have one now. by Ted Bruning T H E C H A N D L E R S F O R D D I R E C TO RY | ke v i n @ c f d i r e c t o r y.c o .u k

THE CHANDLERS FORD DIRECTORY HERITAGE

HAMPSHIRE HERITAGE Exploring Country Churches There’s a scene early in Downton Abbey in which Matthew and Edith are touring the local countryside exploring churches. Church exploring was once the preserve of the leisured classes, but while attending services in church has declined dramatically in the last hundred years, visiting churches simply to soak up their atmosphere has probably never been more popular. Why?

The church of St Mary and St Michael at Stoke Charity

contain a great variety of aspects of interest – soaring architecture, sculpture in stone, carving in wood, richly ornate monuments. Every church is different and is always more than the sum of its parts.

Almost anyone you talk to will tell you they love the atmosphere of little country churches. This feeling, a mixture of comfort and awe, has been described perfectly by the poet Philip Larkin in his well-known poem ‘Church going’ (a title that is a play on words). There can be little doubt that our enthusiasm for visiting churches stems from some deep human need that is unfulfilled in our materialistic, often agnostic, lives.

The oldest churches to be found in Hampshire were built in Saxon times, before the Norman conquest. Many more are Norman, built in the 11th and 12th centuries. None of them look today just as they did when they were built. Much of the fascination of churches lies in the way they reflect the changing patterns of religious worship. Changes in the liturgy (the form of the services) brought huge changes in church interiors. Henry VIII’s break with the Roman Catholic church in the 16th century resulted in the carved screens between nave and chancel being ripped out, carvings and statues broken, stained glass windows smashed, wall paintings covered in lime wash. And it happened again, some would say even more violently, a century later in the time of Cromwell and Puritanism.

But that doesn’t mean exploring churches must be a spiritual exercise. Churches reflect our island’s history and are architecturally absorbing, often beautiful. And their interiors

During these upheavals, which will have been hard for ordinary people to understand or bear, the focal point of the church moved from the altar to the pulpit. Churches became ‘preaching boxes’ with the emphasis on the spoken word of the sermon and biblical texts on painted boards on the walls. Church attendance became compulsory by law and

72

THE CHANDLERS FORD DIRECTORY HERITAGE preaching likewise. Grim though it sounds, this movement produced some handsome interiors, with clear glass windows giving a beautiful light, fine box pews and magnificently carved pulpits. Church interiors became simple again, revealing something that Catholicism had obscured: the beauty of simplicity. But things were not to remain like that. For every action, there is a reaction, and in the church it was called the Oxford Movement, a group who believed that the church must return to the forms of service and architecture of what they saw as the high point in its evolution, the Decorated or middlepointed Gothic style (roughly 1250-1350). What I have said above briefly sketches some the background to the changes in church design that have occurred over the centuries. But what of individual churches in our county? What to see, where to go? With so many churches to choose from, even a random approach will yield much of interest. Hampshire’s strength probably lies in early (preGothic), small churches in deeply rural settings, exactly the sort I like best. So it is a few of these that I shall briefly describe now. The church of St Mary and St Michael at Stoke Charity, east of Sutton Scotney, stands in a field, near a pond. Inside it feels like a miniature cathedral. To quote the church’s excellent guide book, it is a treasure house of beautiful and ancient objects. The building dates mainly from the 12th and 13th centuries, the Norman nave and chancel perhaps being added to a small Saxon church. In complete contrast, nothing prepares you for the Georgian church of All Saints in Minstead, in the New Forest . Viewed from the lychgate, the church could be mistaken for cottages, but for the later brick tower. Stepping inside reveals an interior almost like a house. There were once three large private pews for the comfort of the parish’s gentry. They even had their own fireplaces. The church of St Nicholas at Boarhunt should not be missed. The Saxon walls are mostly original and the interior wonderful – quite small,

All Saints Church, Minstead

rather dark because the windows are very small, plain and simple. But hugely atmospheric. Lastly, my personal favourite: the tiny church of St John at Farley Chamberlayne, in deep rural isolation northwest of Hursley. It can seat only about 70 people, and apart from some fine monuments to the great and good, it is fairly basic. It is also utterly charming. Every visit to a new church is exciting. Be warned, though, about the bane of the church explorer: the locked church. In theory there may be a telephone number or an address from which the key can be obtained. But I’ve seldom found it to be like that, so if a church is locked I simply move on. To me, a locked church is a contradiction in terms. But let’s assume that, happily, you find the door unlocked and are savouring the atmosphere of a brand new (to you) church. My advice would be not to worry too much about historical identifications but to enjoy the entirety for what it is. Nearly all churches have a little guide book on sale, which is well worth buying. It will help you learn about what you see, and you can build up a collection to look back on. Finally, if you possibly can, do leave a donation in the box in the wall. The cost of maintaining our churches is frightening, and they are a unique part of our heritage. Think of your great-greatgrandchildren. How tragic if they were never to see an English country church. by Stephen Harvey

THE CHANDLERS FORD DIRECTORY LOCAL NEWS & VIEWS

Mayor of Eastleigh supports Insulate Hampshire scheme Mayor of Eastleigh, Councillor Wayne Irish is giving his support to the 'Insulate Hampshire' scheme especially as over the next few months it’s free to borough residents. The new insulation scheme aims to save residents money on their energy bills and keep homes warm and comfortable and the message from the Mayor of Eastleigh is ‘Insulate now’ and get it for FREE!! Insulate Hampshire offers cavity wall insulation and loft insulation subject to a free, technical survey provided by the scheme. Normally the scheme offers subsidised loft insulation at £99 and cavity wall insulation at £75, however residents that successfully apply for the scheme between now and 31st March 2012 will qualify for the free offer subject to terms and conditions. The Mayor visited local resident Eve Payler whilst Insulate Hampshire were installing loft insulation and cavity wall insulation at her home in Boyatt Wood, Eastleigh. Eve said “I think it’s a fantastic idea to insulate your home and I’m looking forward to having a warmer home and saving money on my energy bills. I would encourage everyone to get their home insulated especially as it now free for the next few months”

Mayor of Eastleigh Councillor Wayne Irish said “This is a really great scheme and it’s so easy to apply. Lots of borough residents are already benefiting from insulating their homes in this way and are enjoying lower energy bills and warmer homes and I would encourage everyone to take advantage of this superb offer.” The Hampshire wide scheme is backed by Eastleigh Borough Council, Hampshire County Council and other districts across Hampshire. The scheme is open to everyone and will help protect people against the cold, cut household fuel bills and reduce carbon dioxide emissions as well as create new jobs in Hampshire's local economy. The scheme is expected to improve 20,000 Hampshire households, enabling Hampshire residents to cut their household bills by £300 a year, saving 1.5 tonnes of CO2. Some people in certain circumstances will also benefit from completely free home insulation. For more information about Insulate Hampshire visit www.insulatehampshire.co.uk or phone 0800 952 0037. If you are unsure of the person at your door call Hampshire County Council on 01962 833666 or the police on their non emergency number 0845 045 45 45.

THE CHANDLERS FORD DIRECTORY LOCAL NEWS & VIEWS

News from Winchester and Chandlers Ford MP Steve Brine Happy New Year! Time seems to move faster than ever these days and before we know it, Parliament will be back for another (no doubt) challenging year. Since I last wrote for the Chandlers Ford Directory, I can honestly say I have never been busier. My surgery, which is held regularly in the Dovetail Centre in Winchester Road, is very much in demand and I really enjoy doing what I can help constituents who come with an increasingly wide array of issues for their local MP. If you would like help, please don’t hesitate to get in touch as below and a member of the team will be pleased to help you. I popped into the Borough Offices for my regular meeting just before Christmas with the Chief Executive and some of her senior colleagues. The troubling situation at the Rose Bowl was high on my agenda as was the emerging Borough Local Plan which will decide how many new houses are built in Chandler’s Ford, and indeed across Eastleigh, over the next twenty years. We also discussed changes to the Government’s solar feed-in-tariffs, the possible new Borough Council headquarters and improvements being made in the New Year at the Hiltingbury Lakes. I do of course only represent a small part of the Borough of Eastleigh but the issues affecting the whole area are of interest to my constituents in Chandler’s Ford, Hiltingbury and North Millers Dale and it is extremely useful to stay updated on the big issues so I can assist constituents when they come to me. In a previous column I mentioned my visit back in the Autumn to the Southern Cross Care Home in Chandler’s Ford and the new operators (HC One) have now taken over responsibility for the home.

It was good therefore to finally receive some personal contact from HC One and I am in open dialogue with them about the care home and its relationship with the private flats upstairs. Any residents or relatives who have questions or concerns should get in touch and I will be happy to try and help. Finally, it was my great pleasure to visit Hiltingbury Junior School just before Christmas where I met the Headteacher and his Chair of Governors. It was lovely to meet the students and staff and especially to see the special speech and language therapy unit. Being married to a speech therapist, I was particularly struck by this fantastic resource, which I know the school shares with the Infant School next door. I would like to thank everyone at the school for such a positive and welcoming visit and the cake was not bad either! You can see so much more of my work locally - and on your behalf in Westminster - at www. stevebrine.com or you can call 01962 791110. You can also see news specific to where you live at www.stevebrine.com/chandlersford. by Steve Brine

Freecycle®

Although small items are always welcomed by the charity shops, they don’t usually take electrical goods, larger items or pieces of furniture. However you can use The Freecycle® Network (online only) to find a new home for your unwanted clutter. This worldwide initiative – with local groups - is a way of giving away goods which you may not need but are still usable by others. The listings are text only so you don’t need to worry about pictures, and people will mail you via the site if they are interested. You choose one of the replies and the goods are usually collected within 24 hours – often much more quickly so it’s a very efficient way of recycling. It’s also a good place to go if you want something, although you have to have offered something before you can place a ‘wanted’ listing. You have to register as a Yahoo user first and then you can post messages which must be in the format Offered: Short Description, Location e.g. Offered: Portable TV, Chandlers Ford http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ EastleighFreecycle/messages
