Dear Neighbours When I can, I like to use the advertisers who appear in The Chandlers Ford Directory. Like most people I do fairly regularly have a need for home improvements, garden work or health and beauty treatments. I used one of our long term advertisers for the first time in January. The service was superb but I really hope I don’t have to use him again in a hurry. The advertiser was Nigel Guilder Funeral Directors because sadly my mum died on the 2nd January following a long illness. It was the first time I’d ever had to manage a funeral which meant I was truly clueless as to what was involved and the organisation that was required. Although when someone has a long term illness you can do a little pre-planning, most of the work is between the date of passing and the date of the funeral. But Nigel was excellent; respectful without being morose, diplomatic (like weddings, funerals mean accommodating everyone involved) and a real aid when it came to making decisions of which there seemed to be so many. As all who attended said ‘it was a lovely funeral’. We decided to have friends and family back to our house which left the decision of catering. Although very modestly Nigel didn’t mention it, I knew that his wife Sarah Guilder – who runs Bay Leaves Larder – offered catering and she did us proud with selection of food at a very reasonable cost. All in all it went very smoothly thanks to both. It was sort of a shame my mum wasn’t there to see it! I don’t want to dwell on the subject but if you are ever asked to donate to the Countess Mountbatten Hospice at West End I would urge you to give generously. The care given by the staff there is truly outstanding for both the patients and their family, and we are truly fortunate in this area to have this service provided at no direct cost. Tania.

some end up causing more problems than they are worth. In 90% of the cases that come into our workshop, we are able to carry out a cleanup of the system that the ordinary Windows tools fall short of and to install inexpensive extra memory to make the computer run much faster and more efficiently. By removing memory hungry software and replacing it with leaner alternatives (often free) it is possible to ease the burden on your system even further and there are other useful tips and measures that can make a real difference to how your computer runs.
We regularly get customers contacting us reporting that their PC or laptop has become very slow and almost unusable. Sometimes in desperation or on advice from a friend or even their telephone/broadband provider, they have run their system install disk and wiped the machine clean.
So if you are frustrated with how your PC or laptop is ‘treating you’ and its future is looking window bound, just remember that from time to time we all need a bit of looking after and an energy boost!
The problem here is that whilst on occasion what is termed a format/reload is necessary in order to resolve system problems, it does wipe everything off the hard drive, including all the saved documents such as letters, photographs and programs. There are good and bad utilities available on the internet that promise to speed up your PC but

THE CHANDLERS FORD DIRECTORY HERITAGE
HAMPSHIRE HERITAGE Strange Pub Names in Southern Hampshire The Red Lion is said to be the commonest pub name in England. Hard on its heels are the Royal Oak, the White Hart and the Rose and Crown. But what of those strange pub names, some of them unique, that you encounter from time to time? We have our fair share in southern Hampshire. Bitterne and Sholing offer the Humble Plumb and the Spike Islander. My visit to the Humble Plumb in Commercial Street in Bitterne revealed a spickand-span and friendly pub but yielded no explanation for the name other than that ‘Plumb’ appears to mean plumber, as its sign suggests. In days gone by the pub was called the Commercial Inn, but when and why its name was changed seems to have become lost in the mists of time.
8
w w w.c f d i r e c t o r y.c o.u k
The Spike Islander, in Sholing, refers to an early nickname for the Sholing area, Spike Island. There are various, disputed explanations for the nickname. One refers to the spiky gorse that once covered the area; another refers to the settlements of gypsies (‘pikeys’) around Woolston, Weston and Netley; yet another suggests the name is derived from the spike shaped peninsula formed by the rivers Itchen and Hamble. No Red Lions or White Harts for the village of Horton Heath, which seems to be making a speciality of unusual names. The pub known for many years as the Rising Sun at some point became the Lapstone, possibly the only pub in England with that name. The dip in which the pub lies has long been known as Lapstone Bottom. According to my dictionaries, a lapstone is a stone held in a cobbler’s lap when beating leather to make shoes. But the pub’s sign suggests that the name refers to a tree stump on which cattle stood to drink from a stream. Only a mile or so down the road from the Lapstone is a pub called the Brigadier Gerard, once the Old New Inn. Readers of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle will know that Brigadier Gerard was a comic character in a series of adventure stories. But the pub is named after the famous and much loved racehorse of the early 1970s. Brigadier Gerard won 17 of his 18 races, always ridden by Joe Mercer. The Flower Pots in Cheriton, near Alresford, is, I believe, the
THE CHANDLERS FORD DIRECTORY HERITAGE
only pub with that name, though there is a Flower Pot (singular) in Hounslow. The pub was once a farmhouse and home to the head gardener of nearby Avington Park. This is said to be the origin of its name. It is a very traditional and popular pub, much appreciated by those who remember what pubs used to be like and prefer them that way. No piped music or big screens here, just good beer and genuinely home-prepared food. One of the most interesting of all our local pub names is the Trusty Servant in the village of Minstead in the New Forest. Its sign depicts a composite creature with a pig’s snout, an ass’s ears, stag’s feet, what look like fire irons in his left hand, and bearing a sword and shield. The picture appears to have its origins in a painting in Winchester College, but apparently there are similar, and earlier, depictions of the same creature elsewhere in Europe. There used to be a board beneath the sign bearing this rhyme: A Trusty Servant's portrait would you see, This emblematic figure well survey. A porker's snout not nice in diet shows; A padlock shut, no secret he'll disclose; Patient the ass his master’s wrath will bear; Swiftness in errand, the stag's feet declare; Laden his left hand, apt to labour saith; The vest his neatness, open hand his faith; Girt with his sword, his shield upon his arm, Himself and master he'll protect from harm. A little explanation may help. The rhyme catalogues the virtues of the perfect servant. The pig’s snout shows that he is not a fussy eater, but willing to consume his master’s leftovers. His ass’s ears show his patience when beaten by his master, while his stag’s feet indicate how fast he will run on his master’s business. Other characteristics are mentioned in the rhyme. The prize for the most unlikely conjunction of pub name and location must surely go to the
long gone Sociable Plover pub in the Paulsgrove area of Portsmouth. The Sociable Plover is an internationally endangered wading bird of west Asia that has made only a few appearances in Britain and just one in Hampshire. In October 1986 one appeared for a few days in the Titchfield Haven area before moving on for a couple of weeks to HMS Daedalus airfield at Lee-on-Solent. What made someone decide to name a pub in Paulsgrove after this rare and handsome bird? We may never know. But you certainly couldn’t make it up. by Stephen Harvey

PPI Mis-selling What is it? And how does it affect me? Payment Protection Insurance “PPI” was an insurance offered by Banks on any new loan or credit card or overdraft. The idea behind PPI was that if you couldn’t repay the loan because you became ill, had an accident preventing you from working or were made redundant the policy would continue the payments on your behalf. Because these insurance policies were so profitable the Banks effectively made them compulsory and because their loans were then effectively insured against non-payment they could lend ever more to unsuspecting customers. However, when customers needed to make a claim, the insurers who were often subsidiaries of the banks, wouldn’t honour the policies. So at their most vulnerable time consumers found

or e-mail: j.pretty@athertonbailey.com 99 Leigh Road • Eastleigh • SO50 9DR
that they had bought worthless insurance policies. This has led to a public outcry and the Courts have effectively decided that almost all PPI policies were mis-sold. This means that if you have taken out a mortgage, loan, credit card or bank overdraft in the last 10 years or so then there is a fair chance that you have been mis-sold the PPI that you have been paying for and as such you are entitled to a refund of all the premiums you have paid. At Atherton Bailey we recovered almost £30,000 for one couple who were mis-sold PPI on their mortgage. We do charge a fee of 20% of everything we are able to recover but we work on a no win no fee basis so if for any reason we don’t recover anything then you have nothing to pay. So if you are or have been paying for a PPI then contact us on 023 80651441 to discuss what we can do for you.

THE CHANDLERS FORD DIRECTORY GARDENING Growing your own peppers need not be a labour of love. In fact, it is not much more involved than growing tomatoes, so why not give it a try? Pepper plants can be unbelievably pretty too, with fruits in a range of shapes and colour, generally on compact plants and preceded by small and very pretty white flowers. This is a plant with great ornamental as well as edible potential.
Growing Peppers So what are the growing secrets and the hints for perfect peppers? Chilli and sweet, or bell, peppers can both be grown in a greenhouse border, in a sunny spot in the garden in warmer parts of the country, or on a sunny, sheltered spot on the patio. You’ll get the heavier, earlier crop if you grow the plants in a greenhouse or conservatory, but it is well worth growing them outside too, especially if you choose a spot close to a sunny wall or use cloches for extra warmth. Sweet peppers, especially the red ones, are very high in vitamin A and both red and green peppers are also very high in vitamin C. Chilli peppers also have a good supply of vitamins C and A and in addition, contain both beta-carotene and something called capsaicin which is believed to have a useful effect on blood cholesterol levels. So all in all, there should be no stopping you, especially when you remember that they also make great eating – raw, roasted, on the BBQ, in stir fries, stuffed...in pasta sauces. The seeds are readily obtainable from many catalogues or garden centres but before you select what to grow, make sure you take into account the level of heat you’re likely to get with any chilli peppers you grow. Most seed packets and catalogues do make it very clear.
Sow the seeds between now and early April. I use a multi-purpose or a seed compost as either work well, but to get good germination you will need to provide a bit of extra warmth, ideally from a heated propagator positioned in a spot where it receives plenty of natural light. If you don’t have the time or facilities to raise your own from seed, you can always buy a few plants in a garden centre or send off for them. We offer two tasty varieties a miniature sweet pepper, and a chilli pepper as part of my ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ system, they are a regular favourite (see www.pippagreenwood.com for details) Grow the plants on in any good quality multipurpose compost, keep them a tiny bit drier than you would a tomato plant and feed regularly with a high-potash liquid feed (most readily available as a ‘tomato food’). This helps to keep the plants growing strongly and the potash will encourage plenty of flowers and so fruits to form. If you are going for plants in pots, choose a pot or planter that has good drainage, add broken pots for extra drainage, and make sure that the pot is 30cm (12in) or more in diameter. Once there is no danger of late frosts, ideally by early June when temperatures are also warming up, you can put the pots or plants outside in a sheltered, sunny spot. ...Continued on page 14

...Continued from page 13
Some sweet pepper plants can get quite tall and rather ungainly so be ready to give them a bit of extra support if necessary. A stout bamboo cane will usually do the trick, and tie the plant in loosely with twine, string or any other soft garden tie. If you’re after the hottest possible heat from your chilli peppers, then you’ll find this comes from fruits that are totally ripe, and that that ultimate heat is most likely to be achieved from peppers grown on plants that are grown in warmer conditions. So, if your plants are going to be looking gorgeous on your patio over the summer, make sure you put them somewhere extra warm – perhaps a sunny porch or window sill for that last bit of ripening time in the autumn. For sweet peppers, if you are growing them in patio pots in a sunny spot then you are likely to find that there are still some unripened fruits on the plants when temperatures start to fall at the end of summer and well into autumn. To increase the chances of these ripening and increasing to full size, move the pots to a warmer spot or, if
possible, to a porch, conservatory or greenhouse where they’ll get extra warmth and also plenty of natural light. If you want chillies that look particularly good on the patio there are plenty to choose from. ‘Black Pearl’ is a hot chilli pepper with a distinct blackish tinge to the mature leaves and fruits that are black early on and mature darkest red. For classic chillis with bright red, finger shaped fruits try ‘Thai Dragon’.

John O’ Groats to Land’s End and the Three Peaks Chandlers Ford resident Rob Wiffen (who is also the business owner of Greenkeeper Lawns) undertook a huge charity fundraising event last year. He has asked us to include this little bit of feedback on his trip and to thank those that donated to the very worthwhile causes for whom he and his friend were raising funds. Yes we have finally done it! We cycled from John O’ Groats to Land’s End and climbed the three peaks, over 1100 miles in 14 days.
11 Weavills Road, Bishopstoke, Eastleigh, Hants, SO50 8HQ http://www.justgiving.com/Rob-Wiffen
We started on the 21 May and after 14 days completed it at 10:00 on the 4 June 2011 as planned.
http://www.justgiving.com/Nicholas-Bryan
The weather was not exactly in our favour for most of the trip with 130 mph winds on the way down from Ben Nevis. Being blown off your feet is exciting but I’m not in a hurry ‘enjoy’ it again. We had head winds of between 35 and 70mph for most of the cycle, two buckled wheels, and rain and sleet. It definitely made for an exciting and a character building trip. We met some fantastic people and saw beautiful countryside. What a wonderful experience, a really good challenge and great fun. As we came into Land’s End it was a surreal moment. The sun was shining and the wind was light for a change. And we could not quite believe we had completed our adventure, after all those miles. But it was all worth it we have raised over £4000 to date for The Rifles, Macmillan Cancer Support and Dystonia Society and hopefully more to come in. From me Rob Wiffen and from Nick Bryan THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR ALL YOUR SUPPORT AND DONATIONS.

The Handy Household - The Virtues of Vinegar
Most of us use vinegar to make salad dressings or to splash on our chips, but it is far more versatile than that. For instance, white distilled vinegar can be used to tenderise meat, a dash added to cooking pasta will prevent stickiness and adding a splash to a poaching egg will keep the white better formed. When you’ve finished cooking, you can even mix it with water to make a cheap, but effective, detergent. What’s more, if you’re finding it hard to lose weight, mix a tablespoon of any type of vinegar into a glass of water and drink daily. It will regulate your blood sugar levels and curb your appetite. It’s also worth keeping some white distilled vinegar in the bathroom, where you can use it as an antiseptic on cuts and grazes, to soothe painful sunburn or even, mixed with equal parts water, as a skin toner. Even the car can benefit from this ancient ingredient. Use it neat on a soft cloth to polish chrome or wipe clean dirty windscreen wipers and if you need to get rid of unpleasant odours from inside your car, just leave a bowl of white distilled vinegar on the car floor overnight. White distilled vinegar is equally as useful in the garden. Poured neat onto weeds and unwanted grass growing up through drive and walkways, it acts as an effective but non-toxic weed killer. It will also discourage cats and ants from congregating where they’re not welcome. So, whether you’re cooking, cleaning, gardening or even trying to lose weight make sure your home is never without this economical, versatile and totally natural product.

Digital Switchover is Here – Are you Ready?
to the highest industry standards.
Suzanne Hamm-Bury, CAI Ltd
DJ Satellites & Aerials are local CAI approved installers. Working in your area, they are the experts who can help you with all of your digital switchover needs. DJ Satellites & Aerials work on the principles of no call out charge to check any existing equipment, and are happy to offer free advice and guidance.
What is the Digital Switchover? The UK television broadcasting system has been undergoing major change. Since the new millennium, Digital TV has been available to most of the UK but now the process is almost complete in making the full change from old ‘analogue’ TV to the Digital TV future. What are the benefits to switching to Digital Television? Digital TV is more efficient. Digital TV can carry many more TV services in the spectrum previously occupied by one analogue service. Switching off the analogue services also frees up spectrum that can be used for a range of new services, such as extra TV channels in either standard or high definition, mobile TV or wireless broadband. How Do I switch? Switching to digital is as easy as connecting a digital box to your existing TV. You will need to consider all the TV equipment in your home when preparing for switchover. You will need to purchase an Integrated Digital TV or a Digital Set-Top Box and you may also need to upgrade your TV aerial to receive digital. However, your local friendly CAI installer can let you know if this is the case. Everyone within the British Isles has been or will be affected by the digital switchover, so it’s paramount that every set within your home is digitally ready. So where do I turn for advice on aerial upgrades? Local CAI plus installer DJ Satellites & Aerials who are a member of the Confederation of Aerial Industries (CAI), the recognised trade association for the aerial and satellite industry. CAI plus installers are regularly inspected and vetted by the CAI, guaranteeing quality service

THE CHANDLERS FORD DIRECTORY HOME
Working from home Dad’s Taxis Some time ago I was ruminating in a slightly melancholy vein about what life would be like as empty-nesters. Would my wife and I be a bit sad? A bit lonely? Would we miss our little chickadees? Well, no we won’t. Because they’re NOT GOING! We always knew we’d be stuck with the boy, who has started tech. But what I didn’t realise (admittedly, because I never listen) is that he’s only going three days a week. Further, he’s studying music technology, so his homework seems to be very loud indeed. When I was his age I did try my best to make as much noise with my music as he manages with his, but since I was stuck with the discarded family Dansette while he seems to have the equivalent of The Who’s PA system I failed to make quite as much impact as he does. Also, the music of my teens was slightly more melodic than the thumpy stuff his generation favours – rock’n’roll may not be noise pollution, but dubstep most certainly is. Then we learnt that the girl isn’t going either. She was one grade off her first choice, but was offered a place for next year – yeah, that’s right, when the fees go up – and rather than settle for her second choice she decided to take a gap year. So, is she off backpacking around the Far East? No. She’s taking her gap year at home, that’s what. At least she’s not as noisy as he is, but we’re still lumbered with the pair of them. Well, I suppose it’s quite nice really, having them around the place. I’m kind of used to them, in a way, and there’ll certainly be a big them-shaped hole in our lives when they finally do go. In the meantime, though, Dad’s Taxis is not going into liquidation, and the home laundry service remains as gargantuan an enterprise as ever. In fact Dad’s Taxis seems to be expanding. The
26

boy is supposed to take a ludicrously early bus in the morning for his hour-and-a-half journey into college, which seems a ridiculous amount of time for a 20-mile trip. Not surprisingly, he doesn’t always make it, and as he has to be there by 9am, that means the dog is still waiting to be walked by the time the taxi-driver arrives back. So that’s an hour off the working day for starters. In her case, it’s job interviews. Although the town I live in has some 30,000 souls it doesn’t seem to have anything in the way of facilities, not even a job centre. Nor does it have any buses, or at least none of them seem to go where we want them to, and the timetables appear to have been devised by someone who thinks that while everybody wants to flee the town, nobody wants to come back. Or not on the same day that they left, at any rate. So it’s Dad’s Taxis to the rescue, and more hours lopped off the working day. When my generation came to this point in our lives, we were simply taught to drive and bought an old banger (a pale-blue Ford Anglia, in my case). But things have changed, and not for the better. We took one look at how much it would cost to insure them to learn to drive with us and turned deathly pale. And that’s before paying for driving lessons (that’s the drawback with twins – double bubble!) and then insuring them once they pass. You’d have to be a millionaire. And we’re not. So Dad’s Taxis it is. by Ted Bruning

THE CHANDLERS FORD DIRECTORY A PROVERBIAL LIFE...
A Proverbial Life... Waste not, want not I’ve developed a rather odd passion for glass. Not just any old glass, but those items we normally toss into the recycling bin without a second glance...glass jars. Actually, it’s not just glass jars that have taken my fancy but also yogurt pots. So far I’m managing to resist the urge to collect the wonderfully perfect plastic pots - but my glass jar fetish is getting out of control. I used to casually put all such items into the recycling bin, where they would eventually be re-incarnated by the local facility. However, I now seem to have decided that I can cut out the middle man and perform an alternative recycling role myself. I have discovered a whole new world of beauty in the simple glass jar. I covet glass jars and will not assign them to a cruel crushing and grinding. Instead I soak off labels, clean with hot soapy water, rinse and leave to dry on the window sill. Once they have passed the ‘sniff test’ (quick sniff to ensure there is no lingering hint of previous contents), they join their fellow jars in one of several boxes stored in the garage. I’ve been collecting now for nearly six months and I’ve got lots of lovely clean jars. Lots and lots and lots. I’m not the original purchaser of all of these jars; many of them have been donated to me by family and friends. All it took was a simple request to ‘save all your jars for me’, and I’ve been inundated. My mother in particular took this request to heart. She is my most enthusiastic glass jar collector, and has dragooned many of her friends into saving their jars for me. At least once a month I get summoned to ‘Mummy
Towers’ to pick up the latest batch of jars. There’s always at least 30 waiting for me, stacked in a cardboard box, washed and looking suspiciously like they’ve been polished to a high gleam. I’m always delighted to receive them and she’s always delighted to give them to me. However, the oddest thing is that no-one ever questions why I want so many jars. An initial explanation that I was going to make jam has continued to ensure a never ending supply of lovely jars. The jam making season has long gone. Despite my best intentions I didn’t make any jam. Neither have I made any chutneys, relishes or pickles but I will...next year. If I don’t make jam I will find some other use for them. I may take up glass painting and turn them into psychedelic vases for sale on eBay; or pop nightlights into them and use them in the garden, or fill them with sweets for the tombola at the local W.I. Or I could turn them into pen holders, paint pots or mini incubators for seedlings...the possibilities are endless. Indeed my husband has suggested that they would be a particularly useful place to keep the marbles he thinks I’ve lost. I shall ignore him. by A. O’Brien

Swimming with Mother in Law
This happened last Monday, a knock at the door, An unscheduled visit, from Mother In Law “Will you come down the pool with me, have a quick dip? “It closes at twelve so we’ll have to be quick,” ‘Twas the last thing I wanted, she’s now eighty-two, She’s bad tempered and cranky; the dog thinks so too, And my costume is old; I’ve since put on some weight, But dismissing my fears, she just wouldn’t debate. I went in the changing rooms, feeling so frumpy, Emerged back outside all self-conscious and grumpy It was then that I noticed her, patiently waiting, When I saw her attire; nearly needed sedating A hat with pink flowers, bright leaves of green plastic, A costume so baggy; lost all its elastic, It covered her body from head down to toe, There was nowhere this bathing suit didn’t quite go, She was obviously dressing for aqua-marine, ‘Cos a snorkel and flippers completed the scene, I relaxed very quickly, ‘twas so plain to see, That with her by my side, no-one’s looking at me... ©Jan Jack’s Perfect Verse 2011 www.perfectverse.co.uk

It's official – we are the number one letting agent in Chandlers’ Ford and Romsey. Rightmove data confirms that our offices are first out of nearly one hundred lettings offices having won the most instructions and having more property to let. Managing Director Jonathan Rees said” Whilst we were aware that our market share in lettings was substantial it is very encouraging to have it independently confirmed. This is a credit to our hard working, professional and dedicated teams in both offices. We have also researched our market and over 70% of our new business is by recommendation”.

THE CHANDLERS FORD DIRECTORY HOME & INTERIORS
Open Sesame Why have several small, dark rooms when you can simply knock down some walls and live in a gorgeous, airy, bright and huge space? But there are eight key issues you should bear in mind when decorating your open-plan home, says Katherine Sorrell A comfortable seating area can be based around a rug and finished with oversized lighting. The Barletta collection, Marks & Spencer, 0845 302 1234; marksandspencer.com.
1. Creating a focal point While traditional rooms often work around a fireplace or TV, larger, multi-purpose rooms can lack visual focus. By introducing colour, pattern and/or texture on one wall – perhaps above a sofa or behind a dining table – you’ll add character, interest and even drama. The easiest solution is to use a strong paint colour or to hang a large painting, photograph or print, while boldly patterned wallpaper also works well. 2. Using colour Pale colours are generally considered best to emphasise the airiness of large open spaces. But should you go for one shade all over, or choose different colours for different areas? Using the same colour throughout gives an unbroken look and emphasises space, but if one end of the room is to function separately from the other – a living and dining space, a living and work space – you can zone these areas by varying their
colour. A tonal scheme, with colour going from light to darker from one end to the other, can be particularly effective. 3. Planning your lighting Use lighting to delineate different areas within your open-plan space, and illuminate different parts to suit your needs, whether it’s a living area or working space, a kitchen or a dining area. Layer in different types of light in different areas, using a mixture of concealed lighting (in ceilings or under shelves, for example) and eye-catching, oversized fixtures that suit the extra-large space. 4. Choosing a floor Choosing flooring for a multi-purpose space such as an open-plan cooking/dining/living area can be tricky, as the kitchen area needs to be able to cope with splashes and spills, while you’ll want the sitting area to feel cosy and comfortable. You have two choices: either run the same flooring throughout for a sleek, flowing look, or choose a variety of types of flooring which will differentiate between areas. If you go for the former option, consider stone or wood, both of which can be softened with rugs where necessary, or consider high quality vinyl, which is spill-proof and forgiving underfoot. 5. Separating spaces Not all open-plan spaces need to be entirely open all of the time, so for truly flexible living it’s advisable to include some sort of flexible division. In a period property, panelled doors that can be folded back against the walls when not in use are perfect; in a more modern house a moveable screen, or perhaps ceiling-mounted panels (on a track) that can be pulled to one side when desired, would be enormously useful. ...Continued on page 58 T H E C H A N D L E R S F O R D D I R E C TO RY | ke v i n @ c f d i r e c t o r y.c o .u k

THE CHANDLERS FORD DIRECTORY HOME & INTERIORS ...Continued from page 57
6. Linking spaces Open-plan kitchen/living areas are ideal for entertaining, but how do you successfully blend the spaces seamlessly? One solution is to continue the style of your kitchen units for storage used in nearby areas, choosing a design that looks as good for a TV stand, say, as for a cutlery drawer. Versatility is key and you should consider not just colour but also texture, and even handles – long, slender handles tend to look better in modern living spaces than dumpy round ones, for example. 7. Solutions for storage Knocking two rooms together gives you a gorgeous open area – but, because you’ve lost wall space for cupboards and shelves, much less room to hide your clutter. One solution is to use tall, open shelving that doubles as a room divider as well as somewhere to display your stuff, while if you have a flat-screen TV, mount it on a media wall with storage for DVDs concealed behind it. In fact, make the most of every tiny corner, building storage into sloping ceilings, around windows or in any alcove you can find. 8. Buying and arranging furniture Conventional furniture won’t necessarily have the right proportions to work well in open-plan living
Here, a subtle difference in colour separates the dining area from the living space. The dramatic wenge wood shutters are on a track, so are ideal for large windows and as room dividers. £280 per sq m, Santa Fe Shutters, 0845 076 0109; santafeshutters.co.uk.
areas, so you may have to look for larger-thanaverage pieces, and bear in mind that they have to look good from all angles, not just the front. Avoid the temptation to place all the furniture around the edges of the room (it will look like a nursing home); instead, create cosy sitting areas within the main space – with two sofas facing each other, with tables and lamps behind, perhaps, or else use modular furniture which creates sociable corners. by Katherine Sorrell

THE CHANDLERS FORD DIRECTORY MOTORING
Top 5 Cars of the
Tokyo Show
This year’s Tokyo Motor Show was dominated by green technologies and wacky concepts – but among the madness there were some important model launches. The show isn’t one of the biggest. Spread over four halls you can get around it easily in a day – unlike the blister-inducing mass of motors that is Europe’s biggest show in Frankfurt, Germany. However, as the Japanese makers’ home event, it is absolutely packed with innovation. I spent two days scouring the halls and soaking up the culture, but eventually these five emerged as my picks of the show. Toyota GT 86
It’s about time Toyota got interesting again and the GT 86 certainly floats our boat. Rumoured to cost around £28,000 when it goes on sale in the UK, the rear-wheel drive car features a 2.0-litre 197bhp unit and will hit 60mph in seven seconds. It certainly looked good on the stand and was a welcome break from the green concepts doing the rounds everywhere else.
Subaru BRZ
Subaru has been having a hard time of it in the UK of late, so the BRZ comes as a much-needed breath of fresh air. Jointly developed with Toyota, it’s the sister car to the GT 86, and in the company’s famous corporate blue it looked fantastic. The BRZ has slightly different body panels and interior to the Toyota. Just don’t mention the new, and very bland, Impreza also on display on the stand...
Nissan Juke Nismo
The Juke has been crying out for a real sporty model and it looks like Nissan may finally answer our prayers thanks to its tuning arm Nismo. This is the first car that’s been given the Nismo treatment and although currently billed as a “concept” it’s highly likely we’ll see it on our roads soon. Exterior and interior tweaks will be matched with a breathed-on powerplant.
Mercedes F 125!
We’re not big fans of concepts that don’t mean anything, but Mercedes was quick to point out the F 125! showcases the future design direction of the next S-Class. The concept featured fuel cell technology which would give it a range of 1,000km, a lightweight body construction, gullwing doors and a cloud-based infotainment system. But ignore all that, it’s the looks that are most likely to shape future luxury barges from the firm.
Hino eZ Cargo
Tucked away in the corner of the truck section of the show was this fantastic delivery van. Not only does it look superb, but it showcases EV technology and a clean uncluttered design that would make Apple proud. A spokesman for Hino told us it has a range of 50kms, can charge in six hours and hit 70kph. Trials will take place next year before a decision is made whether to put it into production. We just hope the looks are carried over – it certainly beats a boring Transit. by James Baggott, editor of Car Dealer Magazine (CarDealerMag.co.uk)

Relieving Pain
Naturally Health experts advise that natural alternatives to over-the-counter pain relief are often the best solution. Julie Penfold looks at natural pain relief options for common health complaints. It’s an instant reaction for so many of us when pain first strikes; we simply take something to relieve our symptoms. Popping a pill is frequently our default setting and our usual answer is to take paracetamol, ibuprofen or aspirin to relieve symptoms – the most popular over-the-counter painkillers. The main pain-killing ingredient in aspirin is salicylic acid, which is found naturally in the herbs willow bark, poplar and meadowsweet. While willow bark and poplar are only available via a herbalist, meadowsweet can be found in natural health stores. Meadowsweet can be drank as a tea and is very effective at tackling pain fast, says natural medicine practitioner, Susse Wedel. “For general pain-killing use, ginger, turmeric and cayenne pepper are very good options. You can ingest these by adding to a hot water drink or sprinkling on food as and when required,” adds Susse. Tackling Headaches For headaches brought on by stress or tension, the herb rosemary is Susse’s top tip for relieving nervous tension, and just inhaling the aroma can help to ease tension. Rosemary essential oil can also be rubbed directly onto the temple for instant relief. Lavender and chamomile are two of the best relaxation herbs around and are a super option for easing headache pain. As stress headaches are commonly caused by a constriction of blood vessels in the head, rosemary and lavender can help to ease this pressure. These herbs are all available as herbal teas and are equally effective when consumed as a drink. Herbs which have an affinity to the head tend to have a high content of calcium, magnesium and potassium, which are all naturally powerful against headache pain. For migraine sufferers, ginkgo can help to provide relief from painful symptoms. Drinking plenty of water and cutting out stimulants in the diet such as caffeinated drinks, sugar, tobacco and chocolate can also help, as these foods can trigger migraines, as well as prolonging them. Muscle Strain Adding several handfuls of fresh thyme to a bath can be an effective alternative to over-the-counter pain relief for muscle strain, as thyme eases both muscular and rheumatic pain. St John’s Wort oil and rosemary oil can also help to ease muscular aches and pains. Foods containing magnesium such as wholegrains, bananas,
68

spinach, broccoli, tofu, nuts, seeds, beans and pulses can also assist in minimising painful flare-ups. Menstrual Pain Ginger helps to relax the uterine muscles and stops painful cramps, spasms and contractions. Drinking a ginger herbal tea, or creating your own tea by grating ginger and adding to hot water, can provide fast relief from severe period pain. As an additional tip, Susse recommends topping up with hot water regularly as this renews the active painkilling properties and provides longer relief. Raspberry leaf tea is also effective for balancing hormones, relaxing muscles and relieving menstrual cramps. To ease bloating and pre-menstrual tension symptoms, Susse recommends yarrow tea. Other super relievers for period pain include: chamomile as it is high in calcium, minerals and contains muscle relaxant properties and valerian as this helps to reduce cramping and relaxes stomach muscles. In addition, taking a vitamin B6 supplement can also help to tackle muscle spasms associated with period pain. by Julie Penfold

THE CHANDLERS FORD DIRECTORY HUMOUR
No Room for
Giraffes
When I first moved to London, I lived in a big house in a quiet, leafy suburb. It was a shared property, positively bursting at the seams with bits and bobs, nick-nacks and bric-a-brac (nobody really knows what bric-a-brac is, but it seems appropriate here. In fact, whilst I’m on the subject, what actually are nick-nacks?). Two days before we were due to move out of the house, it burned down. For legal reasons it’s probably best if I don’t go into the exact details of the incident; suffice it to say that it wasn’t our fault and we lost everything. In the immediate aftermath of the event, I learned two things: 1) some estate agents are the spawn of Lucifer and 2) I am much happier when I own virtually nothing. I only missed one thing, in truth. My piano. Moving into the new place was a dream - I literally walked through the front door and was done - but I didn’t quite feel at ease again until I’d furnished it with a piano. It wasn’t so much the physical presence of the instrument that I craved, but more the ability to fill the house with music. This may seem unbearably pretentious and like a tremendously deep and cerebral person. I’m not either, of course, but this was of little concern to me at the time. I would go to parties and tell girls the story of the fire in the hope that hinting at an untapped river of pain running through my soul (I think that’s how I phrased it) would make them much more likely to get off with me. And so it was that, gradually, I began to understand that the fire had in one sense been a blessing. It had purged me of the scrapyard of pointless junk I had unwittingly collected over the years, and now I was free to be my own person again. I was lord of my gloriously empty manor.
You can imagine my consternation, then, when in preparation for a recent house move I found myself packing up my bedroom once more and discovering that, just a few short years later, I somehow still owned TRUCKLOADS OF STUFF. I mean, ruddy truckloads. This discovery propelled me towards an unashamedly fascist cull of my belongings. One of the items that failed to make the cut during the move was a five-foot tall pink wicker giraffe I had received as a gift some years earlier. I was rather fond of this curious ornament, as it happens, but when you’re executing a cull of this magnitude you have to be cold and ruthless, and there really was no room for giraffes. In the end I took it to my local charity shop, spent a short while reflecting on what sort of person would want to buy such a thing, and promptly left. Two hours later, as I turned the front-door key one final time and officially vacated my home, I saw a woman walking up the road with, you guessed it, a pink wicker giraffe under her arm. Energy cannot be created or destroyed, said Einstein, only moved around. The law of thermodynamics. True not just of tiny electrons, it seems, but apparently also of giraffes. Chris plays piano in South London power-pop band The Lightyears. The Lightyears, voted the UK’s BEST POP/ROCK ACT at the Indy Awards, have played Wembley Stadium, toured across four continents and released a record with Sting’s producer. THE CHANDLERS FORD DIRECTORY MARCH 2012
The Cost of 'Going it Alone' A lady came to see me recently who had lost her father back at the beginning of 2008. Because she had felt the estate he left behind was quite straightforward, the lady and her brother administered the execution of their father’s Will themselves. She came to see me because she had recently learned about the provision of transfer for nil rate inheritance tax allowance from one estate to another and realised that it had never been used by her parents when her mother died ten years before her father. She subsequently worked out that if her parents had used this transfer allowance, she and her brother would have avoided paying over £10,000 of Inheritance Tax and was coming to see me to see if there was anything I could do retrospectively. Legislation dictates that in order to use the nil rate inheritance tax transfer, you have to claim the right within two years of the person’s death. Extensions for special circumstances can be granted by HM Revenue & Customs, but at their discretion. The key to this lady’s case was whether the information she had just learned was made clear or accessible to her at the time she was administering her father’s Will. HMRC confirmed that the allowance could have been transferred on the death of her second parent to the lady and her brother as beneficiaries of the estates, but reiterated that
is should have been applied for and approved within the designated timescale. However, in recent years there have been a number of changes at HMRC as there are an increasing number of cases such as these being brought to their attention. After explaining the situation in a series of correspondence, my client did receive a cheque for the money that should have been received through the nil rate transfer. I cannot stress enough how fortunate this individual was. HMRC is very clear with their deadlines and it has to be a pretty strong case for anyone to be awarded money who has not worked within these timescales. I am sure the majority of you can predict the point I am now going to make– the importance of seeking professional advice. Well, as the professional, I would say that wouldn’t I? But in all seriousness, when talking about potentially missing out on thousands of pounds that rightfully belongs to the beneficiaries of an estate, the fees of having an experience professional handle financial affairs such as these proves to be a wise investment. Whilst people may think that an estate is simple to administer, that might well be because they haven’t got the experience or specific knowledge to realise how and when unnecessary funds are being handed over in inheritance tax. There are pitfalls in going it alone, so never be afraid to ask.

THE CHANDLERS FORD DIRECTORY LOCAL HISTORY
Out of the
Ordinary
You may well have seen, or met, Norman Taylor as just another ordinary Chandler’s Ford pensioner going about his business locally. A chap whose strong Scottish accent immediately reveals his origins, but nothing of his past which is anything but ordinary. Norman, now 76, has lived most of his life equally divided between Hampshire and Scotland. He was born in a small tworoom cottage at Garrowslack, near Elgin in Morayshire, in 1935. His father was a horseman and his mother bore fifteen children, but only seven of them, all boys, survived. The conditions that the family suffered were extreme which meant that they were often starving during the winter months. For various reasons, Norman missed school and was illiterate until his early twenties.
During WWII Norman’s family were involved in rescuing aircrew from several crashed and burning bombers from the Monaughty Forest.

THE CHANDLERS FORD DIRECTORY LOCAL NEWS & VIEWS
Eastleigh & Chandlers Ford Probus Club The Probus Organisation The concept of Probus was born in the United Kingdom and has grown to be a huge success and has spread all over the world. Currently there are approximately 186,000 Probus Members in the United Kingdom and many others around the world. The word Probus is an abbreviation of the words PROfessional and BUSiness. However, membership is not restricted to these two groups: it embraces those who held a position of responsibility during their working lives. Probus clubs provide a support network for active retirees to attend regular meetings with people who enjoy the camaraderie that belonging to an autonomous membership club brings. During retirement it is important that membership of any organisation should be fun and be something to look forward to participating in, and we can ensure that Eastleigh and Chandlers Ford Probus Club which was inaugurated in 1975 fulfils these criteria. Many clubs have extensive networking

The Story of the ‘Probus’ ‘P’ Right from the onset and the original concept for a lapel badge, it became obvious that the “simpler the better” principle would apply. It should be small, attractive, dignified and instantly recognisable. It was decided early on that the logo had to be based around a ‘P’ in a circle. ‘P’ for Probus encompassed by a circle, representing the circle of friends and companions gathered together as a club. The Eastleigh & Chandlers Ford Probus Club meets on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 12.30pm at the Kings Court Centre, 81 Winchester Road in Chandlers Ford. We have an excellent meal and a speaker. The Ladies are invited to join us at the August and December meetings. In addition we normally meet with the Ladies on the 4th Thursday of each month at the same location for a coffee morning. Whether you are a train user or not, we would welcome your feedback and ideas about how to develop this initiative. THE CHANDLERS FORD DIRECTORY MONTHLY FEATURE
St David’s Day Stick a leek in your hatband, it’s St David’s Day! Maybe not as well-known as St Patrick’s Day or St George’s Day, but still a point in the rankings above St Andrew’s Day and hey, a party is a party, right? Now, I was brought up Roman Catholic, and although the Holy Office would hardly recognise me as a kosher Catholic now, it’s still hard to shake off some of the attitudes. And as both a Catholic and an ex-Catholic I have always found it ironically amusing that the Welsh – by and large, as even they would admit, nonconformist – had such a devotion to a saint. They don’t believe in canonisation, for a start, and they certainly don’t share the monastic tradition; and David (son of the Prince of Powys and the Princess of Menevia) was not only canonised (in 1160 by Pope Callixtus II) but was also the Abbot of a large, aristocratic, and wealthy monastery. So, not exactly a Baptist role-model, then. Mind you, David himself would have had problems if interrogated by the Holy Office about his orthodoxy. He was born in about 500, just as the Saxons of Kent were being converted by St Augustine, and died by tradition on 1st March 589 (hence, celebrated on 1st March). By contemporary Roman standards his tonsure would have been all wrong, and he would have celebrated Easter on a date that would have horrified the Pope. In fact many of the tenets he would have adhered to were overturned by the Synod of Whitby in 664, when the old Celtic church pretty much capitulated to current Roman (and Saxon) practice. That makes him a heretic to just about everybody – contemporary Romans and subsequent nonconformists alike. To think, the Welsh defenders of early Christian tradition were, by comparison with their johnny-come-lately Saxon oppressors, heretics. Ah well, that’s history for you. Full of ironies!
80
w w w.c f d i r e c t o r y.c o.u k
But these were ironies that wouldn’t go away. Samuel Pepys, more than a millennium after David’s death, records that on 1st March there were annual street processions in honour of the Saint by dissenting London Welsh, aggressively opposed by protestant Anglicans; and in the 18th century Anglican London confectioners were satirising St David’s Day by producing gingerbread St David’s riding goats, known as “taffies” – hence our word “toffee”. The ironies continue even into our own time. St David’s stock, it is true, was not particularly high in the 19th and most of the 20th centuries when Wales was still largely Chapel. Only with the resurgence of less sharply denominational nationalism in the last 20 years has he been more widely adopted as a Welsh standard-bearer. In 2000 the Welsh Assembly voted to make 1st March a national holiday. In 2007, that notorious Catholic convert Tony Blair vetoed a bid to make it a Bank Holiday, despite 87% of the Welsh population being in favour. So: a proto-Catholic tells the culturally nonconformist Welsh that their sort-of Catholic but by the standards of his own times heterodox patron saint doesn’t merit a celebratory nationalist day off. Chew on that as you wish. I would rather chew on laver bread, bara brith, and (if you can find it) proper Welsh mountain mutton (a single leg of which, in my childhood, easily fed a family of seven at Sunday lunchtime with leftovers for Monday’s cottage pie). Washed down with a few pints of Brain’s SA from Cardiff or (again, if you can find it) Gwynt y Draig cider from Gwent. Or should that be Monmouthshire?

Friends of Hocombe Mead Update,
February 2012
Now that we are well into 2012 I thought that an update might be appropriate. Last year a great deal of maintenance and conservation work was carried out on the Mead. In addition to the usual coppicing and raking of the South Meadow the one remaining area of heathland was cleared and replanted with indigenous heathers that had been raised from cuttings by John Caplen. Clearing the ground of rough grasses and bracken also stimulated the germination of heather seed that had been dormant in the soil. Some of the holly that has encroached into the woodland was also cleared and boardwalks were maintained. Notice boards and interpretation boards were repaired and/ or replaced in response to damage and removal by vandals. Last year some interesting and successful events were run on Hocombe Mead. Families enjoyed an Easter Egg Hunt and a late summer event with the Living History group from Little Woodhams. In the autumn young people had fun in the Woodland School building shelters, making wooden name discs by sawing wood, lighting fires with strikers and toasting marshmallows round a ‘camp fire’. In the summer there was the opportunity to learn about butterflies and butterfly transects. Sadly the weather was not too encouraging for the sighting of butterflies but the event was enjoyable and provided plenty of information on the habits and habitats of butterflies. The year ended with carols and a magical walk through the candlelit wood.

Last year a Hocombe Mead Management Plan for 2011 - 2015 was written by David Payne (Eastleigh Borough Council Countryside Officer) with photographs by David Cardinal. The new Plan will become available on Eastleigh Borough’s website shortly. It is a splendid document and, when available, it will be a pleasure to read and view. During this year the Friends of Hocombe Mead will continue work in line with the Plan to conserve, improve and diversify the habitats in the Mead. Work will continue in coppicing, maintenance of the meadows, removal of encroaching species and maintenance of reclaimed heathland. Anyone wishing to help with this work is welcome to come along on any second Thursday of the month to the Ashdown Road entrance at 10.00 am. Events to raise the profile of Hocombe Mead and extend the enjoyment of it have been planned for the first part of 2012. The programme of event organised so far are: Birds in Hocombe Mead –March – Date and time to be notified Woodland Flowers – Sunday 22 April, 10.00 am at Ashdown Road entrance Easter Egg Hunt – Sunday 1 April – time to be notified Hints and Tips on Photograpy of Hocombe Mead – Saturday 12 May, 10.00am Ashdown Road entrance June Event – Date and time to be Notified Story telling – July -Date and time to be notified Woodland School – Autumn – Date and time to be notified We hope that you will be able to come along to some, if not all, of the events and enjoy the inspiring habitats of Hocombe Mead. THE CHANDLERS FORD DIRECTORY LOCAL NEWS & VIEWS
News from Eastleigh MP Steve Brine The job of Member of Parliament requires me to be a generalist, like a GP in some respects, but in Westminster you tend to specialise and have periods when you really home in on a particular area of policy. I tend to work on health matters (especially the fight against cancer), on environmental matters and I have recently been elected to the powerful Justice Select Committee. Our job is to look very closely indeed at Ken Clarke (never a dull moment I can assure you!) and examine the expenditure, administration and policy of the Ministry of Justice, Attorney General's Office and Crown Prosecution Service among others. I was really pleased to join the committee, which is currently looking at the way Freedom of Information legislation is working and how Youth Justice is administered in England. I am personally very interested in the whole agenda around prison reform, reducing re-offending rates and crime diversion so hope to use my new position to promote those causes within Parliament. If you have thoughts on any of these issues I would be especially pleased to hear from you. Following a moving visit to my surgery recently I am also working with the campaigning website MumsNet on a new campaign to improve the care given to couples who experience miscarriage. I am sure many readers of this column will have some experience of miscarriage or know people who have because it is much more common than we might think. See www.stevebrine.com/miscarriagecare.

Since I last wrote for the Chandlers Ford Directory I have also attended a very special service at St Paul’s Cathedral in London for the consecration of the new Bishop of Winchester, delivered the annual MPs breakfast briefing to our local business community and spoken about against the latest attack on Christianity as a result of the court ruling that bans prayers before council meetings in this country. I’ve spoken in the House of Commons on removing illegal workers, the new diversity on our High Street when it comes to lending money to small business and the future of (truly) local television in this country. I also welcomed the Health Secretary to our constituency to show him the acute stroke service we are lucky enough to have at the RHCH and which is one of the leading centres of its kind in the South of England. You can see a short film from the visit via my website. If you would like to get in touch on any issue you feel strongly about or need my help, please don't hesitate to get in touch via steve.brine. mp@parliament.uk. There is also a huge amount of information about my work locally and in Westminster at www.stevebrine.com and remember my regular surgery held at the Dovetail Centre in Winchester Road. If you live in the area and would like an appointment please do contact me. by Steve Brine MP

Freecycle®
Although small items are always welcomed by the charity shops, they don’t usually take electrical goods, larger items or pieces of furniture. However you can use The Freecycle® Network (online only) to find a new home for your unwanted clutter. This worldwide initiative – with local groups - is a way of giving away goods which you may not need but are still usable by others. The listings are text only so you don’t need to worry about pictures, and people will mail you via the site if they are interested. You choose one of the replies and the goods are usually collected within 24 hours – often much more quickly so it’s a very efficient way of recycling. It’s also a good place to go if you want something, although you have to have offered something before you can place a ‘wanted’ listing. You have to register as a Yahoo user first and then you can post messages which must be in the format Offered: Short Description, Location e.g. Offered: Portable TV, Chandlers Ford http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ EastleighFreecycle/messages
