The Chandlers Ford Directory, October 11
Dear Neighbours I purchased yet another electrical item for the office this week which needed a power socket. Our house is only 13 years old so was built with quite a few power outlets, but around 10 years ago I had another 8 put in the office (in reality a spare room) so that I could do without extension leads. But over the years we have accumulated more and more technology and have run out again. I’m not boasting a plethora of exciting gadgets here, but even the PC speakers, a desk lamp, a shredder and a mouse charger all need power sockets. I counted 24 powered items today in just one room. Even if you don’t work from home, I’ll bet the back of your TV looks like a snake pit and there will be more than one socket doubler or extension cable in the house. I wonder if modern homes are built with extra sockets to cope with future requirements? I doubt it somehow being as all properties are built to a price, but if I was starting from scratch, it would be banks of sockets in each room, solar panelled everything (it’s the home improvement du jour, don’t you know) and my own mini substation. Technology moves on apace – smaller, faster, cheaper each year – and yet the power outlets are stuck in the dark ages (if you’ll forgive the oxymoron). I don’t think I have much else exciting to muse upon this month. I cleaned eight venetians blinds this week (mind numbing and addictive at the same time). I’ve started having lessons to improve my squash playing (arm now falling off but it won’t stop me). I found an old Nectar card with £320 of points on it (now been converted to a new washing machine) which was surprising really because I don’t remember shopping at Sainsburys more than a handful of times. Ooh, and we were invited to a wedding in November the highlight of which - being entirely selfish - is the chance to meet up with all our old friends with someone else footing the bill. Finally, it’s a bumper magazine this month with local news, new features and some super advertisers both old and new (including electricians and solar panel companies!). Tania.

Whether it’s large or small, contemporary or classic, brightly coloured or plain and simple, you can combine the practical and the indulgent to create a bathroom haven that’s as luxurious as it is good-looking, says Katherine Sorrell.
Just add water There are two schools of thought when it comes to bathing, with brisk efficiency at one end of the spectrum and utter hedonism at the other. But why not enjoy both? The modern bathroom can be a well-appointed and agreeable place in which to cleanse both body and mind, a room which is perfectly functional and also a peaceful sanctuary in which to relax, reflect and refresh. When designing a new bathroom it’s essential to start with the practicalities before moving onto the aesthetics. Consider who will use the room and how frequently, what fixtures you’d like and how much space is available. In a small room, for example, you may need to install a shower-bath rather than a separate bath and walk-in shower, site the loo elsewhere and use specially designed, space-saving fittings. It is always a good idea to plan the room carefully on graph paper, noting the positions of pipes, windows and doors. Bathroom fittings are available in a multitude of styles and prices, but simplicity is often the best option: plain, inexpensive designs can look wonderful when teamed with interesting accessories, and a sensible option is to invest more in moving parts such as shower doors and taps, while saving (within reason) by buying simple white ceramics. How a bathroom feels is vital, in terms of textures and temperatures against bare skin, and underfloor heating gives an efficient, overall heat while freeing up space against the walls

– perhaps for a statement towel warmer. Lighting is also vital in creating an efficient atmosphere for a quick morning shower, or a more relaxing ambience for an evening bath. You may need two types of lights: bright, directional spots for shaving or applying makeup, and gentle background lighting for relaxing in the tub. You can highlight certain features, shine lights up or down on different areas, and use colour-changing LEDs or a whole range of other effects. As for walls, by varying the colours, shapes or styles of tilework you can highlight or separate different areas, or you could use sheet materials such as Corian or Silestone for a seamless effect that’s pricey but beautiful. Current trends in bathroom design include walk-in and extra-large showers, coloured baths and basins and sleek, minimal accessories. There’s also a growing demand for storage cabinets that co-ordinate with fitted bedroom furniture, giving a unified look, especially from a master bedroom to an ensuite, while hiding the clutter that you don’t really want to see. With some careful thought and planning, plus a little inspiration, you can combine furniture and fittings, walls and floor, lighting and heating, to create a room that reflects your individual style and offers an experience that is warm and welcoming, comfortable, clean and calm. ...Continued on page 8

Bathroom checklist Consider all these points when planning a bathroom: • How much space is available? • Who will use the room and when? • What fittings would you like to install and, if there isn’t room for all of them, what is the best way to compromise? • What is your budget? • What style would you like overall? • What type of hot-water system do you have? • Where will you place the water pipes, the soil pipe and the air extraction? • What are your lighting and heating requirements? • How much storage do you need, and do you
Antonio suite: free-standing bath + chrome feet, £1,500; closed-coupled toilet, £1400; 1 tap hole pedestal basin, £700
prefer the fitted or unfitted look? • How will you buy and fit the bathroom – purchase from the internet and do it yourself, co-ordinate the various tradespeople (electrician, plumber, carpenter, plasterer, tiler, painter etc), use a local fitter, or buy an all-in-one package from a showroom? Bear in mind that delivery times can be up to six weeks. by Katherine Sorrell

A Proverbial Life... A place for everything and everything in its place
The Big Clean There are some experiences in life that it’s best not to have. Helping a teenage girl to sort out her bedroom is one of them. Now in the normal course of events the bedroom of a teenage girl is all pink and sparkly. Perhaps there are a few posters on the wall, a scattering of soft and fluffy things or neatly arranged rows of toiletries, CDs, DVDs and books – you get the idea. Forget it. This bedroom had little in common with the abode of a Fairy Princess. Think ‘Stig of the Dump’ and you get the general idea; actually that’s incorrect...think of a wild animal lair and you’ll get a more accurate picture. When you’ve banned the dog from entering this bedroom in case it catches something (the plague/foot and mouth/dysentery?), you know that drastic action is needed. When you’ve run out of cups because they’re all in ‘there’, then you know drastic action is needed. When you can’t get into said bedroom without holding your nose and looking for footholds on the floor, then you know that drastic action is needed. So I said I would help - that is, I would supervise, provide instruction and direction. On no account would I actually clean, tidy or touch anything; it’s not my room and though I love her madly I have no intention of clearing up after her. So I supervised whilst sitting on the bed and handing out bin bags. A strong stomach was needed when peering into the assorted glasses, cups and plates that had been retrieved from under the bed. Did you know that hot chocolate,
when left long enough, doesn’t just develop mould but develops into a solid lump of mould? Or that chips don’t go mouldy but develop into rock hard batons of fried potato? Or that discarded banana skins actually go slimey? The clothes were retrieved from where they had been dropped, draped, discarded and flung. Mountains of wrappers, papers, magazines and plastic drink bottles were gathered for recycling. Windows were flung open, dust was dusted, CDs were organised, DVDs put back into their correct cases and everything was arranged, tidied and sorted into correct order. Finally, three bin bags of rubbish later, it was finished. The only thing that hadn’t actually needed cleaning was the laptop. It sat in splendid isolation in a little pool of cleanliness on top of her desk. Heaven forbid that the blessed laptop should become dusty or clogged with dirt; how else would she gossip with friends in the small hours? And the only thing that needed cleaning and didn’t get it was the dressing table mirror: adorned with lipstick kisses and messages from friends it was strictly out of bounds. However, I think we can live with a ‘kissed’ mirror for now. So when it was finally done it did look all pink and sparkly – a bit like the bedroom of a Fairy Princess in fact. I may even allow the dog to go in there now the plague warning has been lifted. Will it last? I doubt it. I predict that within a fortnight the green miasma will once again be seeping from underneath the door, the mould will have found another home in my cups and yet more calcified chips will be found under the bed. In the meantime I’m still trying to understand how she managed to glide forth from this room groomed, preened and pampered to perfection; giving no hint of the carnage from which this vision of beauty emerged. It must be a teenage thing. by A. O’Brien

Amazing Autumn Colour is just too tempting
Autumn colour has always had the ability to make me go weak at the knees. I love it.... just as the temperatures are dropping and there’s too much potential for things to become dull, gloomy and miserable, your garden can develop a new potential – to be positively glowing with fantastic foliage colour. If you’re looking to add some glorious golds, passionfilled purples, ravaging reds, yummy yellows or perhaps some outrageous oranges to your garden, then now is a perfect time to buy those autumn colour plants. Not only is autumn a great time to plant trees and shrubs, but if you buy the plant when it is showing its beautiful autumn colours, you’ll know exactly what you’re getting. If you want to indulge in a little planting for autumn colour on vertical surfaces such as walls, fences or arbours, there are several plants I’d suggest you consider. Vitis coignetiae – a rampant grower, the heart-shaped leaves may measure up to 2530cm across and their splendid scarlet and crimson colours are un-missable. This vine can be grown through large trees and over sturdier supports. The colours tend to be especially good if the soil is miserable or the root run restricted. Parthenocissus quinquefolia - more commonly known as the Virginia creeper, it’s another sizeable climber, and this also offers a good degree of self-clinging ability, so it
can be used to clothe walls where you have not fixed up a support system. In autumn the leaves are numerous shades of scarlet, orange and red. It can grow taller than you want, so will ultimately need trimming if, say you grow it on a house wall, or else it will move on to the roof. Parthenocissus henryana - a relative of the Virginia creeper, but much more restrained. For much of the year its divided leaves are a dark green to bronzy colour with pretty silvery white veining. In autumn they turn rich shades of red. If you are after a shrub or two then there is an even wider range to choose from. Fothergilla major or Witch Alder is a gorgeous smallish to medium-sized shrub that is covered with scented creamy white spiky flower clusters early in the year, before the leaves appear. Pale green for much of the year the foliage turns shades of yellow and orange in the autumn. Fothergilla needs a lime-free soil. Amelanchier lamarckii, also known as the snowy mespilus or serviceberry, is a large shrub or small tree and produces lovely whitish blossom in spring (that is much longer lasting than the flowering cherries!) In spring the new leaves are a coppery colour, changing to bright green and then come the autumn it is one huge mass of fiery colours. Acers or maples are generally reliable autumn show ...Continued on page 8

stoppers, and for smaller gardens you find it hard to beat one of the Japanese maples with their stunning divided leaves turning rich purples, reds, oranges and yellows depending on exactly which one you have planted. The Japanese maples also do well in large tubs, perfect for a sheltered back yard. Cotinus or smoke bush is a shrub with attractively rounded leaves that come in shades of green, pinkish–orange or purple. Come the autumn they produce a bright display to be proud of. The fluffy seed heads that are left after flowering look just like little clouds or plumes of smoke….perfect with the bonfire effect of the leaves. It is a great time to choose plants for autumn colour, but if you’re not sure what’s available, treat yourself to a visit to an open garden, arboretum or park, and note down the names of what you like best. Planting at this time of year works well, but if your garden soil is waterlogged now, then wait a week or more until it is in better condition. If the soil is on the dry side, it will still need watering well, and the soil around the roots
will need to be kept moist. Always check the ultimate or potential height and spread of trees or shrubs you’re considering…..there’s no use planting something that will outgrow its space in a couple of years time. Then sit back and enjoy your own bit of autumnal magic!

The Way I See It
Lo an cal d ne vi w ew s s
Parking Mad A Chandlers Ford councillor told me residents are always complaining about parking. What annoys Chandlefordians most, it seems, is seeing other people’s shiny metal sitting on the road in front of their property. The roads where householders tend to complain are near schools or playgroups, where shoals of parents regularly ferry their little ones by car. But parking strife is not exclusive to kiddy dropoff zones, as I found some years ago when I worked in TV. Residents of a certain north London avenue were not thrilled to have a programme coming live from the living room of one of their neighbours. The TV crew’s parked cars and lorries almost blocked the road. Someone let one of my tyres down. The show, This is the Day, was a religious programme all about peace and tolerance. Pensioners and people home all day get most upset. The longer people have lived in a place, the more likely they are to resent invaders. Some long-standing residents even put out cones. Feeling possessive about the public highway seems absurd but it is rooted in evolution. In the Stone Age it probably increased your survival chances to show aggression when other cavemen parked
themselves near your cave. Today’s homeowners often say parkers make it hard for them to turn into their own driveways. And childferrying mums do not always depart promptly, with some householders complaining of mothers’ meetings on the pavement. Parked vehicles can spoil the view, and I remember hearing of a pensioner whose lounge was kept dark by a furniture lorry persistently parked in front of her window. Yet there are advantages when people use your road as a car park. • It effectively narrows the road, slowing throughtraffic. • Having lots of cars parked outside makes you look popular. • There’s even a modest climatic advantage. Cars heated by the sun are like big radiators, increasing scope for sunbathing in your front garden. • Some bright days, cars get so hot that you can fry an
egg on the bonnet. Those seeking to reduce energy bills might consider cooking lunch on a parked car, if it wasn’t illegal. For motorists wanting to live in harmony with their fellow Chandlerites, I would advise parking carefully. Few things would be worse than ramming the car owned by the people whose home you are parking outside. Never leave the engine running. It’s bad enough invading people’s space, without poisoning their air. And be tactful. Don’t park outside the same house every day. They probably have enough neighbours already, without having you permanently in front. The only advice I can offer householders at their wits’ end is to pester their local councillor for a yellow line. That will move the parkers to the front of someone else’s property. Failing that, there’s only one move you can make. Move house. by Gordon Moore

A pilgrimage to Florence Nightingale’s burial place The third in our series of articles highlighting some of the fascinating heritage to be found around Hampshire. All these articles are available to view again on our website www.cfdirectory.co.uk.
Hampshire Heritage This morning I went to see Florence Nightingale’s burial place at the tiny church of St Margaret of Antioch in the village of Wellow in Hampshire. When Florence, a national heroine, died at the age of 90, her relatives were offered a state funeral in Westminster Abbey. They declined, preferring the parish church of her home. My interest in Florence Nightingale was triggered by the book Spike Island by Philip Hoare. The book is an extraordinarily detailed account of the construction and subsequent operation of the grandiose Royal Military Hospital at Netley, beside Southampton Water. The intention was that the hospital should be grander than any
such establishment before it, a symbol of national pride. Unfortunately, it was also a symbol of architectural vanity at the expense of functional efficiency. Many aspects of the building’s design were so poor from a clinical viewpoint that they would work against rather than for the recovery of the patients. From her experience at Scutari in the Crimean war, Florence could see many flaws in the proposed design of the Netley hospital. She took an opportunity to describe her misgivings to Queen Victoria herself and subsequently to figures in
the government of the day and their advisers. At one point she set off from her home in Embley Park to nearby Broadlands to tell Lord Palmerston in person of her concerns. As a result, Palmerston wrote to his Secretary of State, “It seems to me that all consideration of what would best tend to the comfort and recovery of the patients has been sacrificed to the vanity of the architect…Pray therefore stop all progress in the work until the matter can be duly considered.” This intervention by a woman came a hundred years before feminism and fifty before the suffragettes. The Florence Nightingale of popular myth is a ministering angel patrolling the wards ...Continued on page 38

in the barrack hospital at Scutari. The reality was a woman who had been appointed to the post of Superintendent of Nursing in the hospital at Scutari. She became a national hero for her tireless efforts to improve the standard of nursing care of the sick and wounded. The church of St Margaret of Antioch lies down the narrowest of country lanes, well away from the main residences and limited facilities of the village of Wellow. The church is generally described as being in East Wellow, but there is no administrative distinction between East and West Wellow, which are both within the one parish boundary, so the distinction between them is more or less confined to the OS map and popular parlance.
to be probably early C13. Inevitably, there is a good deal of Florence Nightingale memorabilia. At the west end, screen panels display various items relating to Florence, including a model of a fair-haired young woman holding a lantern, who bears no resemblance to Florence. In the nave, on the south side, a window sill is given
Three sides of the memorial commemorate her parents and her elder sister Parthenope. Florence hated any form of publicity and longed for anonymity, which explains the brevity of the fourth side of the memorial, inscribed simply “F. N. – Born 12 May 1820 – Died 13 August 1910”. But her wish for anonymity was doomed. People from all over the globe still make a pilgrimage to this simple country churchyard to pay homage to her.
The church itself is very small and quite plain. It has some faded and flaking wall paintings, said by Pevsner by Stephen Harvey

Free Initial Consultation & visit Over 20 years experience
It’s October, and we’re well into the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness. Out in the fields and woods the 12-bores are banging ceaselessly as luckless pheasants tumble from the sky, while happy country landowners gleefully trouser the improbable quantities of cash people are prepared to pay for a spot of shooting these days. (You aren’t even able to keep what you kill: that goes off to Tesco, where it looks decidedly un-baronial all shrink-wrapped on its plastic tray).
October Actually, I like the idea of game better than the taste. I used to inhabit a bucolic dream world where everything was wood smoke and Vaughan Williams, and horsey girls looking awkward in their evening gowns at the Hunt Ball. Pheasant and venison were all part of the fantasy; but most game is a swine to cook. Being fat-free may sound virtuous, but in the hands of a tyro (like me) it usually means impossible to chew. In my younger days I used to pot the odd hare, but it’s strong stuff and actually only my Dad really liked it. Then I met a girl from Leeds and stopped wearing corduroy. The gun went back to the shop and it’s, oh, 30 years since I killed anything. The bucolic haze hasn’t entirely ebbed from my daydreaming, though, but nowadays the autumnal whiff of cordite has been succeeded by a richer, sweeter, aroma: that of apples. The apple harvest starts in July with the earliest varieties and goes on until November, but October is the big month and yes: I’ve become a cider nut. Actually, I’ve been a cider nut for quite some time: in the late ‘90s I edited the Campaign for Real Ale’s Good Cider Guide, ran a quarterly called The Cider Press, and briefly even ran my own cider shop in a farmyard where I made my own cider and sold a range of about 40 farm ciders from plastic barrels. Didn’t do too badly, either, although eventually I had to find a proper job. By cider, though, I don’t mean the fizzy factory-made stuff that
pretends to be a lot more authentic than it actually is. Made from frozen concentrate, much of it imported; watered down; sterile-filtered; pasteurised; artificially carbonated – well, millions of people like it, so I must be wrong; but to me cider is a vintage product made from 100% apple juice (or pear juice, in which it’s properly called perry), allowed to ferment slowly over the winter until it stops fizzing, and served in its natural form without being filtered, pasteurised, and carbonated. It’s a very different drink from Magner’s, believe me. One thing people find strange is that it’s still (not flat) rather than fizzy; they’re also intrigued by the incredible range of flavours that come from the different blends of cider apples favoured by each maker. I generally work behind the cider bar at the annual CAMRA beer festivals in St Neots and St Ives, and my experience is that novice
THE CHANDLERS FORD DIRECTORY | kevin@cfdirectory.co.uk
drinkers are a bit shocked by their first taste of the real stuff, but that nearly all of them come back for more, try a taster of every different cider we have (normally seven or eight), and go home wishing they could find farmhouse cider in their own locals and supermarkets. You can’t, of course. Some of the ciders you find on the high street are better than others, but even reputable independent makers have had to carbonate and tone down their products to take account of the popular taste for fizz; and genuine farmhouse ciders are too “niche” (horrible word!) for the mainstream retailers. But perhaps it’s a good thing that you can’t: the very elusiveness of real cider, unless you’re lucky enough to live in the west, is a strong part of its mystique. And being the snob that I am, of course, I’d probably stop drinking it if just anybody could get hold of it.

Halloween Treat... This home-made fudge is a delicious sweet treat that kids will love and is great for a Hallowe’en treat. You can replace the cherries with raisins, chopped stem ginger or chopped nuts.
Mak app es 550 rox g (1 ¼lb )
Cherry Fudge 450g (1lb) granulated sugar 75g (3oz) butter 150ml (¼pt) milk 170g can evaporated milk 1 tsp pure vanilla extract 100g (4oz) glace cherries, chopped Place the sugar in a large heavy-based pan with the butter, milk and evaporated milk. Heat gently, stirring all the time with a wooden spoon until the sugar has dissolved. Bring the mixture to the boil, without stirring, and continue to boil until the mixture reaches 116C/240F on a sugar thermometer (see tip). Stir the boiling mixture occasionally to prevent it from sticking. Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the vanilla essence and chopped glace cherries. Beat with a wooden spoon until the mixture is stiff, grainy and paler in colour. Quickly pour the mixture into a greased 18cm (7in) square shallow cake tin. Leave until almost set then mark into squares. When completely cold, cut or break into the squares. Store the fudge in an airtight container.
TOP TIP - If you don’t have a sugar thermometer, place a jug of very cold water by the hob. After boiling the fudge mixture for about 5 minutes, drop a teaspoonful of the hot syrup into the water. If the syrup forms a ball which you can roll between your fingers then its ready – if not, boil for a further few minutes then test again.
More Halloween Treats... If you’re planning a Halloween party here’s a few more quick ideas to keep hungry trick or treaters happy...
EYEBALL CUPCAKES - top vanilla sponge cupcakes with a layer of glace icing. Using a tube of red writing icing, pipe lines to resemble veins and place a red cherry in the centre. SPIDER’S WEB COOKIES - top plain digestive biscuits with a thin layer of black ready-to-roll sugar paste icing. Using a tube of white writing icing, pipe a spider’s web pattern on each topped biscuit. Leave to set. HUBBLE BUBBLE JELLIES – make up lime and orange flavoured jellies according to the packet instructions. Leave until just beginning to set and then divide the lime jelly between 6 clear plastic cups. Add a few bug-shaped jelly sweets then top with the orange jelly and a few more sweets. Leave until set. WITCHES BREW – make some red coloured ice cubes by pouring cranberry juice into ice cubes trays then freezing until solid. Pour lemonade into tall glasses and add the ice cubes. Add a couple of jelly sweet snakes to each glass.

Thoughts for Poppy Day In a foreign field, the red poppies grow Their roots search the earth below Heads waving gently seem to say, ‘Welcome’, to a glorious day. Years ago their peace was shattered. Soldiers’ bodies, torn and battered Hit the ground, died, where they fell. Died within a living Hell.

Daily life bites back!
OAK
Episode 1
SCHOOL OF MOTORING
I have recently had an unexpected stay in the Royal Hampshire Country Hospital, Winchester, where I received the most superb treatment but had a daily battle with the drawer in my bedside locker. The beds were fairly close together so the drawer could not easily be opened wide. I could only feel what was in the drawer – I couldn’t see into it. I became quite good at acquiring what I wanted but only after I’d played a sort of “lucky dip/bran tub” game. So it went something like this…no, I don’t want the wet-wipes; Lipsyl useful but again not what I was after; a comb – perhaps I do need tidying up a bit so I’ll use it anyway. Frustration is building and a last ditch scrabble in the drawer reveals what I’m after – hallelujah – my mobile phone! This little exercise occurred several times a day and in the end I built up quite a good relationship with my trusty locker drawer.

In the music industry there has always been an almighty gulf between The Haves and The Have-Nots. The unrecognised serfs struggle for pennies at the bottom of the food chain whilst the rock aristocracy flounce about all day in gold capes filling their swimming pools with Dom Perignon.
Long live the underdog A lucky serf can, of course, catch the occasional break and The Great British Music Festival has long been an effective platform for doing just this. This year some good friends of ours in a fantastic band called Goldheart Assembly had bagged main support to Stornoway on the Bread & Roses Stage at Kent’s Hop Farm Festival. Our friends, bless them, were facing a perennial festival problem going head-to-head with a high-profile main stage act, in this case, The Eagles. Rumours had already started flying around about exactly how large a fee The Eagles were commanding for their performance (it ought to remain confidential; however, it could have wiped out the national debt of a small African country), when something unexpected happened. Halfway through Goldheart Assembly’s set, the volume suddenly halved. We discovered later that an Eagles Representative had demanded that the speakers be turned down because they were disturbing the action on the main stage. Turned down?! The Eagles were playing through a rig so enormous it could have
shattered Mars. Of course, there’s really only one reason why this incident got all our backs up. Neither of our bands are famous enough yet to warrant that kind of carry-on. Would we all imitate this behaviour if we could possibly get away with it? Of course we would. How I long to storm out of dressing rooms complaining that the hot towels aren’t scented with the right strain of citrus fruit, or explode in an apoplexy of rage at the very idea that the underside of my private helicopter isn’t emblazoned with a massive fluorescent mural of my grinning face. Problem is, when you’re at the stage of your career where you still have to lace up your own shoes, massive tantrums simply aren’t tolerated. This flagrant trampling of the little guys reminded me of an unfortunate experience we had with a major music festival (remaining nameless) some years back. UB40 were headlining and we were lucky enough to be offered a coveted slot on the Unsigned Stage. There was a catch though. You had to buy forty tickets up-front if you wanted to play, at £40 per ticket. Sure, you’d ‘get the money back’ if you
succeeded in dragging four hundred thousand of your friends along with you - in fact if this happened you’d even make a ‘profit’ of two shillings and a packet of elastic bands - but your slot would remain unconfirmed until upwards of £1500 had cleared in the promoter’s bank account. ‘How can you possibly justify this?’ I demanded down the phone. ‘Well,’ replied the promoter, without remorse, ‘somebody’s got to pay for UB40.’ I’m sure you don’t need me to underline just how wrong this is, but if there is a point to my little rant, it is this next time you see a hungrylooking musician singing for his supper on a tiny stage in the dark recesses of some provincial festival, throw him a biscuit and tell him he has nice hair. One day, when he’s rich and famous, he might just buy you a gold cape to say thanks. Chris plays piano in South London power-pop band The Lightyears. Working from home Liquid Lunches When I started out as a reporter back in the mid1970s, journalists were heroic boozers. Epic, even. The stories I was told! But on the local weekly in the Midlands where I did my training they were just that – stories. The older staffers span yarns of the liquid lunches of yore that had lasted for hours if not days; the lunches over which these tales were told tended to be a sandwich eaten at the desk. Very, very occasionally I would venture, normally alone, sometimes with the sports editor, to the pub next door for a pint of cold, gassy keg beer and a dried-up cheese roll with a copy of the Sun or the Mirror (because in those days the red-tops were comparatively new and all journalists, whatever they told you, secretly admired their braggadocio) and the Stranglers on the juke-box (turned right down so as not to upset the granddads). All very demure. Then I joined the brewing trade press and life changed dramatically, especially life after one o’ clock. On my induction day the News Editor and Chief Reporter dragged me to the nearest pub. By 2.30pm I was anxious. By 3pm I was terrified. “Err... shouldn’t we be getting back?” I said nervously. The News Editor gestured expansively in the general direction of a party of pixillated worthies a few tables away. “That’s the Editor, that’s the Deputy Editor, that’s the Production Editor,” he said. “When they go, we go.” They didn’t rise until 4 o’clock; by then I could scarcely rise at all. But these lunches were, if not the norm, certainly nothing unusual, especially if one were being entertained. I remember, vaguely,
a press officer from Grand Met taking me to a restaurant to “explain” why the company was screwing its pub tenants so heartily. A couple of scotches (doubles) at the bar were followed by a bottle of white wine (between us) with the fish, another bottle of white (for him) with the veal and a bottle of red (for me) with the beef, a half bottle (again, between us) of rather good Sauternes with pudding, a glass of port each with the cheese, and a large Calvados (for me) and a Cognac (for him) with the cigars. By the end of it all I agreed with him wholeheartedly, which I suppose was the point of the exercise. If you could stand any more of my boastfulness I could easily reel off a dozen more lunches like that. But the everyday pub lunches were scarcely less gargantuan – in my favourite Fuller’s pub around the corner from the office I would routinely demolish three pints of ESB, each with an accompanying scotch, in an hour. No wonder I’m so fat. All this came to an abrupt end the day the paper was relocated from the City to Slough, over an hour’s drive from home. Lunch went back to being a sandwich at the desk. Then I was made redundant – or “went freelance”, in the jargon of the trade – and started Working From Home. Could I resist the temptation to revisit the fabled lunches of erstwhile? I could not! The wife was at work. The kids were at the childminders. A trip to the butcher’s netted a big sirloin and a punnet of mushrooms (no chips – I was on a diet), while the offie next door yielded a bottle of wellpriced but extremely strong Côtes du Rhône. What a feast! And how did I feel when I’d demolished all this? Terrible! In the intervening years my system’s resistance to this magnitude of assault had completely evaporated; and one of the more macho elements of the office liquid lunch was one’s capacity to put in a full afternoon’s work afterwards. That had gone. All I could manage was sleep. Worse, so had the pleasure. A liquid lunch has to be convivial; sneaked alone, it’s no pleasure unless you have a thing for guilt. So, no more liquid lunches for me. They belong to the 1980s. And, perhaps, to a rather wistful chapter in my memoirs. by Ted Bruning

Making Provision for the Children One of the major considerations for a lot of people when embarking on any kind of financial planning is providing for their children. Of course people’s main priority is to earn, save and manage money in order to look after their families, but in the unforeseen tragedy of a parent passing, it is essential that a Will be made, and made well, to take care of any children left behind. Without a parental Will, all financial and welfare decisions for a child are made by the courts or according to strict statutory rules. Say, for example, a deceased father had his own company, he may have intended that his children benefit from the profits of continued business, inherit shares or even take over the business if they were old enough. Without a clear and legally binding Will, this legacy could easily be lost, especially if there are partners or senior colleagues in the business. It is exactly the same principle for guardianship. If a mother specifically wanted her sister, aunt or friend to take care of her children in her absence, it is important she make her wishes known in a Will, otherwise the courts would award guardianship to someone they deem suitable, but whom the mother may have had issue with. If children of 21, 19, 15 and 10 years old are left orphaned without any parental instruction, the two older siblings could apply to the courts for guardianship of
the younger and would probably succeed in getting it. Similarly these two children could be in control of all the finances. Such young people taking on this sort of responsibility could be far from what the parents wanted. Maintenance for the children in relation to guardianship also needs attention and thought. I always advise clients that the executor of a Will (someone who manages the release of funds to support the child) be different to that of a guardian. If an individual is looking after the children and has control of the money left to them, there is a distinct conflict of interest. Without a Will, children inherit anything from an estate at the age of 18. Many feel this is too young if large sums of money or property are involved and, in a Will, parents can manage financial provision throughout the course of their child’s life (though there are tax implications in Trusts that go on past the child turning 25 years old). I am currently dealing with
a case where a man made his own will and left his estate to his son and any property, which remained, to his grandchildren. It is not clear if this means that the son can do anything with it and leave whatever remains for his family or whether the son only had a life interest and the right only to the income from it. A Will should put in place a clear structure for a family in the absence of a parental unit and be of a type that gives peace of mind to all parties involved.

Are you listening to me? When we say “Did you hear what I said? it’s not usually because the other person didn’t hear, but more than they weren’t paying attention or taking our words seriously. It might be dismissed as a ‘man’ thing especially and something that a woman has to accept. However women can be just as guilty of not hearing. Whatever the reasons there are for not being heard and however valid these reasons are, the result is often a feeling of loneliness or under-appreciation within what might be an otherwise good relationship. Even in an otherwise happy partnership it’s not self-indulgent to expect more and doing so can enrich and further enhance our lives. When we are not heard adequately we often turn to non-verbal actions or behaviours in order to communicate our needs to those around us. It might be as obvious as banging pots and pans while

washing up which might get a reaction, or going quiet which paradoxically can often get a greater reaction than when we are trying to talk. At Wings we are running a one day workshop for couples who would like to explore the art of hearing each other better. If you feel that you already have a good relationship but would like this further enhanced through hearing each other better, contact Maryanne Steele (details in advert above). This one day workshop ‘The Art of Hearing Each Other’ is being run from 10am-4pm on Saturday 15th October. Cost ÂŁ85 a couple to include refreshments and lunch and will be held at Wings in Romsey. What Mum Always Said I had jumped in the bath; I was lying in repose, When I noticed a spot on the end of my nose, It was big, it was shiny, so bulbous and red, And it didn’t comply with what Mum always said, She said “When you’re older, your spots disappear, You’ll be left with a skin that’s so perfectly clear”, But I’m now forty eight so that’s clearly not true, As the spot on my nose is now spoiling my view, I’m feeling concerned as this seems to suggest That Mum got it wrong and she doesn’t Know Best ‘Cos if she was right, in the things that she said Then why have I spots growing out of my head? ©Jan Jack’s Perfect Verse 2011 www.perfectverse.co.uk

Community SpeedWatch Speeding is one of the factors that most affects the quality of life in communities around Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. It can be a factor in road traffic collisions and impacts on the day-today lives of people in the community. You often tell us that speeding is one of the biggest community concerns in your area and as such we want to work with you to set up a Community SpeedWatch programme. Community SpeedWatch will be co-ordinated by Hampshire Constabulary in partnership with your local council and other agencies. The scheme itself will be run by your local police safer neighbourhood teams and the community volunteers.
How does it work? SpeedWatch can only operate on roads with a speed limit of 30 mph and under. The best locations would be 20 mph zones and community and residential areas that have a 30 mph limit. Community volunteers work alongside Hampshire
Constabulary officers to identify vehicles which exceed the speed limit. Details of the vehicles will be collected at the time of the alleged offence and then entered onto a database. The registered owner of the vehicle will then be sent a letter telling them that their vehicle was seen exceeding the speed limit, how it affects the local community and asking them not to do so in the future. If the same registration number is logged again within 12 months the owner will receive a warning that if the vehicle is seen speeding a third time the details will be passed to an officer who may take further action. Commercial vehicles or vehicles that belong to companies will have a separate letter sent to the local transport manager and the roads policing unit will be made aware.
What next? Community SpeedWatch locations will be suggested by the local community and the police but will have to be sanctioned by Hampshire Constabulary’s safer roads officers. A risk
THE CHANDLERS FORD DIRECTORY | kevin@cfdirectory.co.uk
assessment of the location will have to be done before activity can take place. Volunteers must be aged at least 17 years and each scheme needs a minimum of six volunteers. Keen applicants will need to complete an application form and vetting process which can take up to six weeks to clear. Specialist training will be given to volunteers and any local travelling or out of pocket expenses will be covered. Community volunteers working on the roadside will be given use of high visibility jackets, wet weather equipment, road side signs and equipment to monitor speed and record vehicle details. Volunteers will be covered under Hampshire Constabulary’s public liability insurance for roadside working.
Still interested? For more information about starting a scheme, the equipment we use or becoming a volunteer visit our website, contact your local neighbourhood police officer or e-mail the safer roads officers at: road.policing. management@hampshire. pnn.police.uk

As the country well and truly feels the financial pinch of the recession, there’s a lot of pressure on us to be careful with our money, to spend it wisely and to adapt to a less indulgent lifestyle. So buying those designer labelled beauty products complete with very large price tags - can become difficult to justify for those of us on a weekly budget.
Buy
Beauty For Less Yes, it’s hard to fight the allure of the brand and the promises that come with it, not to mention the sublime packaging and determined sales pitch from the assistant. We all have a tendency to think that if it’s designer and expensive, then it’s guaranteed to make our skin more youthful, our lips look fuller and our lashes appear longer. We reassure ourselves that the expense is, of course, worthwhile but in reality, are there other products that can transform us from plain to gorgeous, for half the cost? Is a healthy glow, flawless skin, luscious lashes and perfect pout only available if you buy into expensive top brands or is there an effective value for money alternative? Well, thanks to the new trend in budget beauty, a superb range of affordably priced buys are emerging. They might not be quite as exciting and glamorous as designer alternatives, but they do offer surprising results at pleasing prices. The once uninteresting ‘value’ ranges have been overhauled and replaced with ones that are far more likely to grab our attention and make us realise that these products can stand up well against the competition. After all, what makes a beauty product great is what it can do for you, not the name on the container. With supermarkets like Tesco leading the way with unbelievably cheap prices on cosmetics, these budget buys provide a great way for us to try out different or fashion-forward makeup looks, that we usually wouldn’t want to invest a lot of money in. The cheap price tag makes experimenting fun, and a few pounds lost in an unsuitable lipstick is easy to live with, unlike the hefty credit card bill from the beauty counter of a top brand. And it isn’t just cosmetics that are available at bargain prices. Everyday essentials are great ...Continued on page 80

...Continued from page 79
value too. If you love relaxing with expensive bath and body products then you won’t be disappointed. The Body Shop - although slightly more expensive than some of the really cheap budget buys - is always the best for sumptuous, sweet smelling ranges that are perfect for pampering, cater for all needs and rival any designer fragrance. More than ever before value-for-money products can even be found in your favourite clothing store. Next have a fabulous range of items that are fashion inspired and affordably priced, so you can finish a
trendy new look perfectly. Their vast range of varnishes bring nails up-to-date, at a price that allows you to try out every colour in the range. Although it is hard to deny that a lipstick clad with an iconic designer logo looks so much more sophisticated in any handbag than a budget alternative, when on the lips the two look equally effective. And of course, with what you save on a designer lipstick, you can invest in expanding your make-up bag, finding a new look that really suits you and a satisfaction in knowing that, even with all the new purchases, you are still saving money. by Helen Jane Taylor

Meet Diane Best from Chandlers Ford Over the years I was aware that my weight had crept up and I knew I was not healthy. My weight had to start going down instead of up. I used to play tennis until I had my 2 children, so I tried to get back into that but it did not work. After all with tennis you always need someone else to play against so it became difficult to schedule. Walking around Eastleigh last February I met Christine from Curves who was distributing some flyers. We talked for a few minutes and she told me a little bit about the club. I decided to pop in and met Michelle the Manager who quickly made an appointment for the following day. I loved it immediately. Coming to Curves and even just doing exercise was a kick start. But as great as the exercise made me feel, it wasn’t going to move the weight so I decided to change the way I eat following the Curves weight management program. My initial program, the high carbohydrate diet, didn’t work for me so Charlie, the class leader, advised I switch to a high protein one. She also advised that I should eat before 7 pm. Now I have dinner with my children during the week instead of with my husband (who often gets in as late as 9.30 pm). Fortunately he understands
82
and he is really keen for me to lose weight and is very supportive. I have now lost 14 pounds in weight and 13 inches in my measurements and I can get back into my size 14 clothes which I haven’t been able to do in years. It is like having a new wardrobe. I have more energy too. The little jobs like the ironing pile don’t exist anymore as I get it done before it builds up. My 16 year old daughter eats healthily already so she encourages me to eat better food. When we are shopping and I reach for a packet of biscuits she says, “Oh we don’t really need them Mum.” She is right: eating biscuits and cakes between meals were my weaknesses; now I don’t and I don’t miss them.
My ultimate goal is to reach a size 12 and stay there. That means staying at Curves forever! The staff are absolutely marvelous. They motivate you in a relaxing way by just asking you how you are getting on. October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. Curves are waiving the joining fee and all you have to do is make a donation to Breast Cancer Care. News from Winchester and Chandlers Ford MP Steve Brine
Parliament formally returned last month following its Summer recess but as I wrote the piece below I was actually on my way home from Westminster following the August recall in the wake of the recent riots. It is our first recall in nine years, a measure of the seriousness the Prime Minister attaches to what took place in London and numerous other English cities. We were luckily spared the violence in Chandler’s Ford, but as I made clear to the Prime Minister, that does not mean we were unaffected. I was overwhelmed by the response from local people who got in touch with me as they watched events unfold on television and the message was clear – this was criminal behaviour that made us very angry, is totally unacceptable and needs to have serious consequences
for those taking part. As I made clear to David Cameron, there is clear support along my constituents in Chandler’s Ford for the police to have tough and robust tools at their disposal when faced with this sort of mob behaviour in the future and that absolutely should involve the use of water cannon and the suspension of unhelpful social media such as Blackberry Messenger. Longer term I do think we need to address some elements of our society which are broken and it goes right back to the family and schools in my opinion where all too often respect and responsibility have become strangers. Of course this is a broad statement, and there are many areas with a much bigger problem than ours, but there is a major issue in any society when children grow up seemingly not knowing the difference between right and wrong. The fight back starts here! While MPs were back at their desks, the Chancellor took the opportunity to update us on the turmoil in the world’s financial markets and what it means for economies here and across the world. This
is not in any way to denigrate the riots we saw last month but I suspect the fiscal crisis engulfing the Eurozone will turn out to be every bit as central to our future. It is going to be incredibly hard for years to come as a result of the inheritance we had but the coalition’s unwavering commitment to fiscal responsibility and deficit reduction remains the only show in town. Abandoning that commitment would plunge Britain into the financial whirlpool of a sovereign debt crisis, at the cost of many thousands of jobs, and we will not let that happen. August is traditionally a chance for MPs to catchup and reflect before party conference season and the new political year in the Autumn. I had plenty of both to keep me busy this year and I embarked on my first 'Summer Tour'. We were out gently knocking on doors across the constituency and it was a pleasure to take my surgery out and about. You can find more on all my work locally, book a surgery appointment or just get in touch to have your say via www. stevebrine.com or 01962 791110 by Steve Brine

Freecycle®
Although small items are always welcomed by the charity shops, they don’t usually take electrical goods, larger items or pieces of furniture. However you can use The Freecycle® Network (online only) to find a new home for your unwanted clutter. This worldwide initiative – with local groups - is a way of giving away goods which you may not need but are still usable by others. The listings are text only so you don’t need to worry about pictures, and people will mail you via the site if they are interested. You choose one of the replies and the goods are usually collected within 24 hours – often much more quickly so it’s a very efficient way of recycling. It’s also a good place to go if you want something, although you have to have offered something before you can place a ‘wanted’ listing. You have to register as a Yahoo user first and then you can post messages which must be in the format Offered: Short Description, Location e.g. Offered: Portable TV, Chandlers Ford http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ EastleighFreecycle/messages
