Getting Things Done A few years ago I bought a book called Getting Things Done by David Allen. I read a bit of it, but the irony Tania Houston of not having finished it isn’t lost on me. Chapter 1 should have been “How to get to the end of this book”. But even though I manage to do most that I need to, I find it hard to drive myself to finish every last outstanding task. That is, if it’s a little job – say, paying a bill – I’ll do it there and then. But anything like stopping a mobile phone contract or a Sky subscription is really painful and time-consuming. I’ve just tried to change a phone from a contract to a pay-and-go arrangement and it was a full 45 minutes, with me repeatedly saying “no thank you, I don’t want a new contract, I just want pay-and-go”. It’s exhausting. And buying something…we have so much choice, I find myself bamboozled by the options, and stymied by indecision. But as much as I dislike pushing myself to ‘get things done’, the sense of satisfaction once the call has been made, or the item purchased is fabulous. Procrastination fills your headspace, and frankly there is so much already in there, I can’t afford to keep anything more. So that’s my New Year’s resolution: choose one tricky job a week. Put it in my diary and give myself till Tuesday lunchtime to get it done (I can’t help still allowing myself a bit of time). Very top of the list is to get the bathroom at home ‘done’. I’ve been talking about it for over a year, and goodness we have enough excellent tradespeople in this magazine, for there to be no excuse. If my next editor’s letter doesn’t mention that one ticked off my list, I’ll hang my head in shame.

BEAUTY
New Beginnings By Kate Duggan Alexa Chung wearing Nails Inc, NailKale polish in Regents Mews colour
January is the perfect time to give your beauty routine a shake up and try something a little bit different…
Stuck in a make-up rut? You might want to consider booking yourself in for a make-up lesson. Some of the big brands offer mini makeovers, as it’s a chance for them to show off their products, but if you really want to get out of that rut, try a M.A.C. Full Make Up Lesson (£50), which lasts for 90 minutes and will give you bags of inspiration. Not quite ready to take the plunge? A new nail polish is a great baby step. Nails Inc have added four new colours to their NailKale range, each priced at £14. The NailKale polishes are designed to give your nails a vitamin and mineral boost, as well as colour, to leave them harder, stronger and healthier. The new colours include Regents Mews, a rich crushed damson, as sported by Alexa Chung pictured above.
Fancy trying a different shampoo and conditioner? I’m loving the SuperFruit Complex 10-in-1 Renewal Shampoo (£10) and Conditioner (£10.99), by SheaMoisture. SheaMoisture has been going for over 100 years in the States, but has only recently made it across to the UK. The 10-in-1 system is incredibly nourishing, so is perfect for this time of year, when our hair has to cope with the demands of icy winds and central heating. A complex blend of Shea butter, marula oil and fruit extracts works to hydrate, support elasticity and make hair more manageable. Look out for the brand in Boots. ...Continued on page 12

Tinted lip balms always summon up teenage memories of strawberry flavoured gloop in a tin. Thankfully, they’ve come a very long way, as the new benecos Natural Shiny Lip Colour (£6.95) proves. They’re wonderfully hydrating and can help prevent chapped, cracked lips, so are perfect for winter. They’re available in three colours, including Rusty Rose – a natural, subtle shade that suits most skin tones. If you have eczema you may well have heard of purepotions – a range of creams that have been specially formulated to soothe skin conditions, such as eczema and psoriasis. Personally, I think it’s a great range for most skin types. Each product is packed with nourishing natural ingredients, such as Shea butter, hemp seed oil and chamomile extract, and has none of the synthetic ‘nasties’ that can so easily dry and irritate skin. Try the Scar Oil (£18.99), which contains rosehip – scientifically proven to help improve the appearance of scars, stretch marks, uneven pigmentation and signs of ageing.

What is a Dental Implant? a dental implant is an artificial replacement for a tooth root, usually made from titanium. there are many different implant systems available and when competently used they all deliver a highly reliable form of treatment. the main aim during the placement of any implant is to achieve immediate close contact with the surrounding bone. over time further growth of bone onto the implant surface enhances the stability of the implant. Frequently AskeD questIons Will I be able to eat what I like afterwards? Once completed, patients should be able to eat a normal, healthy diet with little or no difficulty. What Costs are involved in implant treatment? The cost can vary, depending on the degree and extent of treatment required. The full cost is therefore explained and confirmed in a written treatment plan from your implant dentist.
How long will it take? Implant treatment usually requires a number of appointments over a period of months. In some cases, however, implant work can be completed in a much shorter period. How long will it last? Once treatment s completed a regular routine of dental hygiene and regular check-ups should ensure that implants last for many years. Am I too old for implant treatment? There is no upper age limit for patients to undergo implant treatment, provided they continue to enjoy reasonably good health. Is the treatment painful? Patients are often surprised at how little discomfort they experience during and after implant procedures.

From Policing To Polishing For Hampshire Mum Hampshire mum Sandra Reid spent 23 years as a police officer for Hampshire Constabulary before starting up Bright & Beautiful Chandler’s Ford.
working with underprivileged young people which earned her a commendation for outstanding leadership and a personal letter from Prince Charles.
After almost a quarter of a century cleaning up the streets of Hampshire, Sandra is now taking on a very different challenge, managing a team of housekeepers to deliver ethical, professional and eco-friendly cleaning, tidying and laundry services as well as remaining part time in the police.
Sandra, who lives in Chandler’s Ford with her family, will also be able to draw on husband Will’s own housekeeping skills. After becoming increasingly exasperated by their children James and Beth’s untidiness while Sandra was away working, Will created a teenage instructional video on ‘How to Change a Toilet Roll’. The video went viral on YouTube, generating millions of views and media interest across the world and Will went on to create a series including Turning off Lights, Hanging up Wet Towels, Loading
Sandra enjoyed an illustrious career as a Sergeant in the police force, working on the London Olympics in 2012, joining 9000 other officers to police the NATO conference in Wales last year and running a four month Princes Trust team program
a Dishwasher and Vacuuming. Sandra’s Bright & Beautiful business will also be supporting local charity Naomi House Children’s Hospice, which cared for her five-year old nephew Jayden who battled an inoperable brain tumour for 18 months before passing away on Christmas Day 2014. Sandra’s family has spent a lot of 2015 raising money for the hospice, including running a half marathon and climbing Mount Kilimanjaro to raise money. As well as a donation for every new client and collection of charity bags, Bright & Beautiful Chandlers Ford will also be providing practical support to Hampshire families who use the Hospice by carrying out a free Spring clean every month.

INTERVIEW
Jamie Lawson Jamie Lawson is the first signing to Ed Sheeran’s record label ‘Gingerbread Records’ and has already had a huge worldwide hit with his single ‘Wasn’t Expecting That’ and brought out his self-titled album ‘Jamie Lawson’ in October. Lucy Ambache from the Evening Breeze caught up with him to talk about Ed, touring with One Direction and hair. Love the new single! Thank you for playing it. It’s surreal to hear it on the radio but a thrill. What percentage of interview time do people spend talking about Ed Sheeran? About 80%! He’s quite instrumental in the whole thing so I’m actually quite happy to talk about him
You’ve got a tinge of the red hair as well. Did he sign you because you had similar hair?
doing meet and greets, and the queue got longer and longer every night. It’s been brilliant!
I expect so. It was in the contract! <laughs>
Do you think you’ll get a queue length the same as Harry Styles soon?
Ed says amazing stuff about you including “the first person I had to sign was Jamie”.
No! Probably not. I’m not quite as young and pretty as Harry.
That’s very nice of him, isn’t it? No pressure though! No not at all. When someone believes in you that much, there isn’t a lot of pressure in fairness. He just winds you up and lets you go! Is Ed a nice guy? Yeah. He’s pretty much exactly as you imagine him to be. Let’s talk about you. The album is called ‘Jamie Lawson’. Is the single an accurate taster of the album? Yeah in a way, musically, it’s like that song expanded. It’s acoustic based and relatively gentle but there’s drums and a horn section, along with a Hammond (organ). So I wanted to make a warm, spacious, loving, big hug of a record. That was my plan.
What’s it like on tour with the boys? Is it “lads lads lads, banter banter banter”? I think they’re probably too busy. Harry came over on the first night and said hello and thank you. So that’s been quite cool. I do a feature on the show called ‘Naughty At 7.40’ - do you have any terrible housemate or even showbiz stories? I’m the least rock and roll person I’ve ever met! I’m not very wild. Are you more about herbal teas and an early night? Probably <laughs>. A night in front of Nashville on TV – that’s my ideal.
You went on tour with One Direction. Did their fans take to you? Yeah – strangely. I was apprehensive thinking they maybe wouldn’t but they’ve been really receptive, warm and loving. After my show, before One Direction came on, I was 18

Taking Part In Local Amateur Dramatics Amateur theatre is alive and kicking locally with 14 theatre companies, 1100 members and over 50 plays and pantomimes staged every year. The largest in this area is RAODS of Romsey with 250 adult and 60 youth members performing a different play or musical monthly in the 230 seat Art Deco Plaza Theatre. Then there’s The Mountbatten Players whose 26 members perform their much-loved pantomimes every December at The Point in Eastleigh. Nick Coleman of The Chameleons of Chandler’s Ford explained how his love
affair with amateur theatre developed, “My father was a member of Canterbury Amateur Operatic Society for over 40 years so I grew up listening to Gilbert & Sullivan operettas and being envious of the fun he was having. I’d always fancied having a go on stage but lacked the time and the courage! When I decided to look into it four years ago I was surprised by how many theatre companies were active locally.” Nick found that there was little collaboration between the amateur theatre community so a year ago he formed The Local Drama Network to encourage
the sharing of resources such as props, costumes, cast members and promotional activities. So if you think you might enjoy getting involved in amateur theatre – whether performing onstage or helping backstage with set-building, lighting, sound or costumes then give Nick a call. You can also sign up for the monthly newsletter of forthcoming performances. The Local Drama Network Tel: 023 8025 3910 nick-coleman@btconnect.com
Gospel Phonics Is Recruiting If you are interested in the lighter side of choir singing then you might be interested in singing with Gospel Phonics. We are a community choir based in Chandlers Ford and we rehearse on Tuesday evenings during term time at Crestwood College. Our concerts are quite informal aimed at singing for local residential/charitable groups. We don’t audition and you don’t need to be able to sight read. We are recruiting sopranos, altos and basses so if you’d like to have some fun with music why not come along and try us out? 22

MOTORING
Best Small Cars
VW Polo
If you don’t need to transport your worldly goods with you every time you get in your car you don’t necessarily need a big vehicle. If most of your journeys are made around town and don’t include major motorway mileage, then you may want to consider one of the latest city cars. These won’t cost you the earth to buy or to run, are great to drive and the latest crop are stylish and comfortable for everyday use. Here we’ve picked five of our favourites.
Ford Fiesta - Price: From £9,995 The Fiesta has been the best-selling car in the UK for more months than we can remember – and that’s not without good reason. The latest small Ford has plenty to offer with a well-laid out cabin, fantastic handling that makes even trips to the supermarket exciting and a superb choice of specification.
VW Polo - Price: From £11,100 The VW Polo has an enviable reputation for being a bit of a tough guy – and in the city you need a vehicle that can withstand a few bumps and scrapes. The Polo is solid both inside and out with functional layout and built-to-last materials. Although it’s at the higher end of our price scale, VW’s wellrespected residual values and reliability make it a worthy investment.
Honda Jazz - Price: From £11,695 The Honda Jazz might not be everyone’s first choice in the small car sector – but that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth a look. The Japanese car firm’s reputation for reliability is up there with the best in the world. Couple that with some funky looks, spacious interior and competitive pricing and it may be worth taking a trip to your local Honda dealer to try one out.
Dacia Sandero - Price: From £5,995 Some of you have probably spent more on a holiday than it costs to buy this brand new car – but don’t let this bargain basement price tag put you off. The Dacia Sandero, loved by James May of Top Gear fame, is the real deal, combining back to basics interior and no thrills styling with a functional engine and practical lay out. The fact you’ll get change from £6,000 makes it even more tempting.
Vauxhall Corsa - Price: From £8,995 The Corsa is soon to be replaced by an all-new model which means there are bargains to be had on the current model. A firm favourite with new drivers and pensioners alike, the Corsa might play second fiddle to Ford’s Fiesta in the sales charts, but it’s still worth a look. It’s stylish, has an impressive array of engines to pick from and is packed with plenty of features too. 28

Accident? You Mean Collision Iain Betson learns there are no accidents on Britain’s roads. Speaking to a Highways Agency officer the other day, I was intrigued to learn that the emergency services now do not class “incidents” on the road as “accidents”, but as “collisions”. Previously, they would have attended a “Road Traffic Accident” (RTA). Now they attend a “Road Traffic Collision” or RTC. Why the subtle change in wording? Well, the use of the word “accident” implies something that was unexpected, unforeseen or that “just happened”. And calling these incidents as such has been used as a defence in a court of law.
was pulled by the fire crew from my wrecked car that was part of the multiple pile-up outside the primary school at going home time. And I know my car was subsequently found to have four bald tyres, no insurance and dodgy brakes. But the whole event was classed as a traffic accident, so you can see I couldn’t have foreseen any of it happening. So, therefore, I am innocent of all charges.” Accident or incident. Collision or coming together. You say tomaytoe and I say tomato. It may be interpretation but, ultimately, the results are the same. If we all took a little more consideration and, dare I say, care in our driving, then I think it’s likely the number of “collisions” our already stretched emergency services have to attend would be reduced. With, of course, a corresponding drop in the number of people killed or seriously injured.*
“Yes your honour. I know I was clocked by the speed camera doing 60mph in a 30mph zone. It is true I

News from Chandlers Ford And Winchester MP Steve Brine long-term work in this area and will be as thrilled as I we are able to do this. Every cloud really does have a silver lining! More; www.stevebrine.com/ breastcancer
I may be working inside Government these days (at the Department of Health of course) but my interests at Westminster remain varied and I always try to give a sense of that in these columns. 2016 will be no different in that respect. Last month for-instance, I sat as part of unique inquiry into body image convened by the All Party Group led by the MP for Romsey. It looked into the use of underweight models on both the catwalk and in advertising and followed extensive media coverage over the London and New York Fashion Weeks, and the French example where they have legislated to prevent designers using models with a BMI of less than 18. You can find out more via www.stevebrine. com/bodyimage Secondly, a little noticed announcement from last month’s Autumn Statement was a rather neat idea that has ending up supporting a key local charity helping women with breast cancer. You may be aware of an ongoing row we are having with the European Union over Vat charged on women’s sanitary products? In short, we want these ‘essential’ items to be zero rated but that is not possible under current EU law so we levy the minimum possible, 5%. While we argue the toss with Brussels, the Chancellor announced he is going to use the £15 million a year raised from the ‘Tampon Tax’ to fund women’s health and support charities. The first £5m will be distributed between Eve Appeal, SafeLives, Women’s Aid and The Haven Breast Cancer charity which has now opened its ‘Wessex haven’ in Hampshire. Readers will know of my 34
Finally, I have spoken out again on the subject of term time holidays from school. This has not made me hugely popular with my colleagues at the Department for Education but they have this one wrong. There is no question that children need to be in school but Government should trust teachers, and parents, and allow more flexibility – especially in the early primary years – than at present. I remain on the case arguing for a compromise. More; www.stevebrine.com/westminster You can find more information about my wider work as your MP in Westminster and the constituency, via the website or on 01962 791110.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Justin Friel feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Chandlers Ford & Eastleigh areas and Justin is finding that his
approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve
done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Justin a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Circus Company Shows That Anyone Can Fly Its mantra is that it can teach anyone how to fly and that’s exactly what aerial circus company Pirates of the Carabina proved while in residency at The Point. As part of its two-week stay in the Leigh Road theatre’s award-winning Creation Space the exciting company invited two Eastleigh community groups to take part in circus and aerial skills workshops. In separate workshops, Mighty Dance, an integrated dance group of disabled and nondisabled people; and Eastleigh Young Carers, in association with One Community, joined performers from Pirates of the Carabina for an afternoon of flying fun. Using silks, hoops and harnesses, members of the two community groups, including electric wheelchair user Anthony Ridgeway from Mighty Dance, were “flown” through the air and taught a number of acrobatic moves such as aerial spins and turns. Speaking after his “flight”, Anthony, 41, from Factory Road, Eastleigh, said: “I didn’t know how they were going to fly me in my wheelchair but they managed it. “It was excellent. I’ve never done it before. It felt strange but it was great fun. I feel very lucky to have had this wonderful opportunity.” Pirates of the Carabina is a 13-strong team of stunt men, aerial performers, sound engineers, and riggers. The company spent two weeks in The Point’s Creation Space, developing their acclaimed show FLOWN! which will be performed at the Eastleigh theatre in Autumn 2016. On the transformative workshops the group hosted, Pirates of the Carabina programmer Jade Dunbar said: “It’s been absolutely wonderful working with an 42
Anthony Ridgeway, 41, from Factory Road experiencing what it’s like to fly during a workshop with aerial circus company Pirates of the Carabina at The Point
integrated group of people, being able to fly them no matter what their disability and building their confidence. “From being able to take them from lifting a foot off of the ground to taking them right up to the top of the space has been absolutely brilliant – and we even flew Anthony in an electric wheelchair!”

And Another Thing... Tom and the boastful brother in law by Tom Hughes My Dearly Beloved’s glance at the clock did not bode well. “Tom, isn’t it time you were in bed?”
“I see you’ve upgraded your kitchen, Sis.”
“Can I finish my hot chocolate first please, Mother?”
I opened my trap to have a mini boast all of my own, but was too slow out of the boasting blocks.
“Well Tom, it’s nearly ten. You have to be at the airport at five.” “Yes I know and then we’ve got to endure a whole week of it.” “A whole week of what?” “Your Kevin’s boasting.” In 1991, Sarah’s spotty brother emigrated to Canada, where he grew up, married and made his fortune. Standing bleary-eyed in the airport multi-storey, I’d only just heaved Kevin’s matching luggage into the boot when it started. “Hey Tommy, are you still driving this old heap? I change my auto every two years, on the advice of my tax planner.” “Really Kevin? How fascinating!” The drive home (apart from some quite severe boasting about his trip to Dubai) was fairly uneventful. Sarah greeted her brother warmly and once safely ensconced in the kitchen he finally - to everyone’s relief - stopped boasting about Dubai but started boasting about his house. 44
“Yes, we changed it last year, didn’t we Tom?”
“It’s a pity this place isn’t big enough for an island. You see back home I have this huge island,” “I bet it’s not as big as Richard Branson’s.” “What’s that Tommy?” A kick to the shin from Sarah was my first warning of the day. Then it was time for lunch. Back in the Mondeo we headed into town as Kevin thankfully left his island paradise behind and moved neatly onto his next subject - Kevin Junior” “Now that my boy is at Yale doing law, we have so many adjustments to make. OK $40,000 a year isn’t cheap, but when you have a gifted child, what can you do? How’s your Evan doing, Tommy?” This was my cue for some desperate parental Top Trumping. “Well funnily enough, he’s just taken his bar exams.”
Another kick from Sarah. “Well what do you know? Maybe one day they’ll lock horns in front of a judge?” “You never know Kevin, they just might.” Then Kevin spotted a generic tax-dodging coffee emporium. “Hey, let’s jump in here and grab a skinny latte. A taste from home!” We had only just taken our seats when we were greeted by Evan, wearing a company polo shirt and a wide smile. “Hi Uncle Kev! We’ve all missed you! Hi Dad, I forgot to mention - I moved branches last week!” Evan disappeared then returned with our order as I waited for the inquisition. “Tom, I thought you said…” “What? Oh Evan? Yeah. He’s qualified now. He’s a Barista.” “A barrister? “Yeah, like I say, he’s taken his bar exam and now he’s a Barista.” “A…barrister?” “Yeah, I just told you (now mumbling into my creamy hot chocolate) a…brrstrr.”
We sipped in silence. I waited for a kick from Sarah. But none came. The week slipped by until it was time to say goodbye to Kevin. Back in the airport car park I heaved his matching luggage out of the boot. Through the grey drizzle we both looked out across at the retail park in the distance. “You see, in Canada, we have none of this constant awful weather - the summers are hot and the winters are snowy and cold, they’re perfect, I…” His voice trailed off. Wondering what was the matter, I caught his eye and blow me if the old chap wasn’t blubbering! “Kev, are you ok?” “I miss England Tommy, and I miss my boy. You know something Tom, you’re a lucky guy.” Driving back through the roadworks and the pouring rain I pulled onto the drive to see Sarah arguing with the man from the water board who was about to start digging up the pavement. Well, I thought to myself, Kevin could keep his island and his money; after all, there’s no place like home… Follow Tom @groomsdaybook groomsdaybook.com

It’s Time To Get That Strictly Sparkle With an average audience of 10.7 million viewers for the 11th series, it’s clear that Strictly Come Dancing is still one of Britain’s favourite TV shows. In addition to its UK success, the BBC has sold the format to other countries and the show - renamed ‘Dancing with the Stars’ for overseas audiences - is currently watched by over 250 million people worldwide.
By Kate McLelland
It seems we’re all fascinated by the idea of watching someone who has never attempted a Foxtrot, Waltz or Salsa being bullied and cajoled by a ballroom dancing professional until they emerge, like a glittering butterfly from a chrysalis, to strut their stuff on the dance floor with confidence and style. When you see the huge effort it takes to transform a novice into a ballroom star, it’s surprising that most Strictly celebs don’t give up and go home after week one. In fact, most of the well-known faces who sign up for the show seem willing to put up with any amount of hard work and pain in order to achieve their goals. So what is ballroom dancing and why is has it proved so addictive, not only for Strictly’s high profile participants but for the many thousands who take part in social and competitive dance events throughout the world? The term “Ballroom Dancing” refers to a set of partner dances that have their roots in Europe, North America and Latin America. In Europe formal dances began to receive recognition in the late 16th century, when a French writer called Jehan Tabourot published a study of the social dances of the day, including popular medieval dances such as the pavane,
56
galliard and branie. The French enthusiasm for dance continued strongly throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, when Louis XIV decided to found a royal academy of music and dance and ordered its officials to draw up precise rules for the execution of every dance. During this period the Minuet was the height of fashion. This dance required multiple partners, holding hands at a respectful distance, to move together in formation. In the early 19th century the introduction of the waltz, which allowed partners to move independently, facing each other in a ‘closed hold’, initially caused outrage because it was thought to encourage scandalous intimacy. The waltz sounded the death-knell of the old-fashioned sequence dances and by the early 20th century the pattern of modern ballroom dancing had begun to emerge. A new wave of music, inspired by black jazz musicians in America, encouraged the development of a range of new dances including the Charleston, the Black Bottom and the Turkey Trot. The public was hungry to learn these new dances and so a number of enterprising professional dance teachers made it their business to analyse, write down, publish
and teach the new moves. If popular dance was to flourish it was essential that people should be able to learn the right steps, and establishments such as the famous Arthur Murray School of Dance in the USA led the way: bringing dance to the masses. This intense interest in ballroom dance eventually led to competitive events, and the first unofficial world championship took place in 1909. Nowadays referred to as “Dancesport”, competitive ballroom dancing is recognised by the International Olympic Committee and about 30 countries regularly compete in international competitions. There is even a wheelchair dance sport movement, which is currently growing in popularity. Ballroom has come a long way in just over a century, although public enthusiasm for traditional ballroom dances waned towards
the end of the last century as new dance forms such as Rock and Roll, the Twist and Disco were introduced. The reinvention of the TV show ‘Come Dancing’ as ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ in 2004 re-ignited Britain’s interest and its current popularity suggests that modern ballroom dance will continue to excite participants and audiences for a long time to come. If you’ve been well and truly bitten by the ‘Strictly’ bug, your next step could be to try out some of the dances yourself. Learning to dance is the ideal way to keep fit and ballroom dancing is suitable for people of all ages. If you don’t have a partner, your dance tutor will pair you up with someone of similar ability, so it’s a great way to meet new people who share your passion. Visit www.dancenearyou.co.uk to find the address of a dance studio in
your area. Dancesport can also be enjoyed as entertainment: many fans follow their favourite competing couples to events such as the British National Dance Championships, held in Blackpool’s iconic Tower Ballroom. If you prefer to watch live dance events you can follow what’s happening in your area by visiting www.areyoudancing.com. Ballroom dance requires a high degree of skill and versatility. It’s attractive and exciting, but it’s also enormous fun, whether you’re dancing or watching others compete. ‘Strictly’ fever is sweeping the nation for good reason and given the renewed interest in ballroom dance at all levels, it’s a great time to get out there and experience that addictive dancefloor glamour for yourself.

Your Legal Options For Divorce Q:
After an uncomfortable and rather painful Christmas, I left the house I shared with my wife and family and have decided to begin divorce proceedings. How do I get this process started?
step back. There is so much pressure on couples to be a ‘perfect’ family over Christmas. Unless you are all sat round a vast table groaning with food in your best clothes, laughing, joking and pulling crackers in a glow of warmth and happiness, you can feel like a failure. For some people, it highlights cracks in a relationship at a time when, due to the many activities with visiting family and friends, it is often impossible to talk about them. Throw into that mix the cold weather that keeps everyone indoors, Christmas can serve as a relationship pressure cooker.
Then we have New Year, full of resolutions and new beginnings which often make a quick exit seem like the easiest option, but is it? Then there is the family home. If you have left, your wife might be in the position to claim you have deserted her and the children.
Will there be expectation of the family staying there? Is there a mortgage? Who is paying it? Does your wife work? If not, has she been financially dependent on you for some time? You also need to think about financial assets such pensions, shares and investments and any debt that has been incurred with personal or business loans, overdrafts and credit cards. Whatever the situation, divorce proceedings now involve the process of ‘Mediation’ with professionals who are trained to remain impartial and facilitate discussion between parties. They will meet with you and your wife together, identify the issues and try to help you reach agreement. They can provide broad based legal information, but since they cannot advise you, you will need a lawyer as well. Another option is for a Resolution Lawyer to consider the ‘Collaborative’ approach. This is a relatively new way of dealing with family disputes, where each person appoints their own lawyer and everyone meets together to work things out face to face. The key is to take things one step at a time with the right professional advice to make sure everyone can move on with their lives happily. By Emma Cole

The Life List Sign of the Times These days we are deluged with information and constantly talked down to. Now we apparently need warnings on takeaway coffee cups that CONTENTS MAY BE HOT. Well, duh! What I like to do is take a phrase out of context and imagine where it might be better applied. I see KEEP OFF THE GRASS or REDUCE SPEED NOW and I can’t help thinking they’d both be ideal for a Drug Rehabilitation Clinic. HAND WASH ONLY would look perfect above a sink and USE NO HOOKS is surely the best way to write a terrible thriller. TEMPORARY LIGHTS could be an advertisement for Christmas decorations, while QUEUES LIKELY could refer to Christmas shopping, the January sales, or any time you’re desperate to use a public convenience. CLEAN UP AFTER YOUR DOG might describe a successful day at the greyhound track. HIDDEN DIP could indicate someone has moved the guacamole, or that there’s an unexpected dance move coming.

DEADLINE?
WORKS EXIT could be a term for a redundancy programme, retirement, or even a staff walkout (if anyone can remember those!). WEAK BRIDGE means it’s time to learn a new card game, or to give up on that yoga class. HARD HAT AREA is a fancy term for a head and MEETING POINT is perfect for a Friday night in a pub. New Year Revolution Organise your life the electronic way and stick to those resolutions Withings Smart Scales & Garmin Forerunner Smartwatch
In the 1980s, it was the Filofax; in the 1990s, the Personal Digital Assistant or PDA. Today, though, we’re more likely to stay on top of our lives using a mobile device. Whether you’re trying to get more organised or just want to stay on top of your New Year’s resolutions, gadgets can help. If your resolution was to get fitter or take better care of your health, there are stacks of devices that can accurately monitor your vital signs and your exercise routines. Firms such as Fitbit offer an entire range of fitness trackers ranging from the clip-on, £49 Zip to fully-featured smart watches such as the £199 Surge. Whichever kind you go for, the devices can track your activity to let you know how active you’ve been, how far you’ve travelled and how many calories you’ve burned, and they can send that data to a phone so you can keep track of your progress. If you’re interested in particular sports, Sat-Nav specialist Garmin makes a range of fitness trackers designed specifically for runners, golfers and other sportsmen and women. You don’t need to be active to benefit from smart gadgets, 62
though. If your resolution was to lose weight, a set of smart scales - from around £29 for standalone scales to £150 for scales that communicate with phones or PCs over Wi-Fi, enabling you to store your progress in an app or even share it with others online - can show you not just how much weight you’ve lost but also how your body is composed. So, for example, if you’re replacing fat with muscle - which is heavier than fat - you’ll be able to see that you’ve made great progress even if the actual weight displayed by the scales hasn’t changed. Then again, you’ll know that by the way your clothes feel, so maybe you don’t need smart scales after all. We’ve mentioned phones a few times now, and that’s because pound for pound they’re the most useful resolution trackers and life organisers: the reason standalone electronic organisers are a rare sight these days is because smartphones do a better job for less money. A really good Android phone can be as little as £40, and for that you’re getting a smartphone with built-in calendars and reminders and the opportunity to use apps such as the superb MyFitnessPal, which can track your exercise and can
use your phone’s camera to scan barcodes and work out nutritional information from them automatically. More expensive devices such as Apple’s iPhones include motion processors that can track your steps, flights climbed and distance travelled without requiring a dedicated fitness tracker, and Apple’s own Health app can record that data plus anything else you’d like to monitor. If you’d rather do most of that automatically, MyFitnessPal is available for Apple devices too. The other thing that smartphones do is enable you to join likeminded souls. Many fitness devices and apps - Fitbits, Nike Fuelbands, the MyFitnessPal app - also have online communities where you can compare progress, share your stories or just hang around chatting with people who are doing the same things as you. That’s useful, because while fitness devices and apps are great, there’s one thing that only human encouragement can provide, and that’s the motivation to stick to your plan even when you don’t feel like it - and someone to laugh with when you need a bit of a boost.

HOME & INTERIORS
New Year, New Style? By Katherine Sorrell Known for its designer covers for Ikea furniture, Bemz predicts a ‘Deco Glam’ style for this year.
Out with the old, in with Where do i start? the new, and if your Think about what parts of your home feel most tired and New Year’s resolution unloved. Perhaps walls could is to refresh your home do with a wash of fresh paint, for example. Dulux’s colour of with a fashionable the year is Cherished Gold, a look, interiors expert gold-influenced ochre that can be Katherine Sorrell has used on its own as a statement or as a highlight in combination some handy tips to help. with other hues. The overall colour palette for this year is muted, warm and soft yet also sophisticated. ‘Think coral, not orange; ochre not yellow and midnight, not blue. This is a friendly palette but with a dark, mysterious side,’ says Rebecca Williamson, Dulux’s senior colour design and content manager. Another of Dulux’s over-riding themes for 2016 is ‘Heritage & Future’, in other words, the idea that one has to take inspiration from the past in order to design for the future. So, vintage and antique references support those of the modern-day in a palette that includes chocolate, sand, a deep, pinkish red, muted orange and spicy browns. Ideal for an overhaul in any style of property. One of Dulux’s key trends for 2016 is ‘Heritage & Future’, including reds that reflect our rich heritage, but also have a bright contemporary feel that points to the future. 68
More easy updates You may not be in the market for buying new furniture, but there are still ways to update your old
pieces for a fabulous new look. Ikea has identified a key trend this year for personalisation – just look at what can be done with an inexpensive chest of drawers, spray paint and some imagination. On a subtler note, a change of paint colour, or even a wood stain, combined with new knobs or pulls will give wooden furniture a new lease of life, while for really on-trend attitude you could have a table top covered in marble, slate or zinc. The latter is the metal du jour, and keen DIYers can order a sheet of zinc online, then get how-to instructions from YouTube.
Keep going around the house. Another way to add interest to dull walls would be with an eye-catching, stick-on-peel-off design, a metal-framed mirror or an oversized print. Boring floor? Time for a new rug – or there is always the option of either sanding back or painting old wooden boards. Looking for something simpler? Adding a sheepskin to an old sofa or chair will give instant uplift, as will a change of bed linen, towels or small accessories such as cushions, storage baskets or vases. And how about lights? A
sassy lampshade can alter the look of an entire room, while popping in some filament bulbs will give your lighting a vibe that’s absolutely hot right now. How about a cool coat hook or new door knobs? Some kitchen canisters or a bathroom soap dispenser? The smallest things can make a surprisingly big difference. The high-street chains are brilliant at tapping into new trends and getting affordable products out there fast – so get browsing in your nearest department store.
What other trends should i be keeping an eye on? While a striking monochrome palette of black, white and grey is going to be big in 2016, opulent metallic accents are also catching on fast, and work well with both modern and traditional decors. The look can be either industrial (more on this
next month) or retro-glam – as per Bemz’s ‘Deco Glam’ look, described as ‘cosy glamour with a Seventies twist’. ‘Many people who think back to the Seventies think of corduroy, brown, orange and wood panelling. Instead, we want to create a more glamorous Seventies style in our homes: think Charlie’s Angels, Studio 54, and Bianca Jagger,’ says Lesley Pennington, CEO and founder of Bemz. She recommends mixing plain fabrics in rose, steel, mineral blue and straw with geometric accents, plus dark wood, shiny brass, fluffy cushions, small tables and statement floor lamps. At the opposite end of the spectrum is the Scandi look that is all natural, textural, tonal and pared-back, including sheepskin, leather, wood and felt. If you prefer something with more colour, go for a folk-inspired style with brighter tones of red,
orange and teal, combined with intricate florals, handicraft and woodland-inspired images. Last but not least, Graham & Brown have predicted four trends based around the catwalks at London Fashion Week: meadow prints, statement reds, intricate lace detailing and – you heard it here first – a throwback to the Eighties. You have been warned…
Ikea predicts a trend for personalisation, whether it’s using stains, stencils or freehand painting.

RECIPE
Fruit and Nut Granola Bars If you’re worried about additives or extra sweeteners in shop-bought granola bars then why not try making your own? Packed with crunchy nuts and seeds and sweetened only with brown sugar and honey, these home-made oaty bars are perfect for a snack or as an after-school treat.
Ingredients: • 140g porridge oats • 50g unsalted blanched peanuts • 25g pecans, roughly chopped • 25g pumpkin seeds • 20g sunflower seeds • 100g butter, plus extra for greasing • 80g light soft brown sugar • 3 tbsp runny honey • 75g sweetened dried cranberries or jumbo raisins • 2 tbsp sesame seeds
Makes 8 bars or 16 squares Ready in 50 minutes, plus cooling 74
1. Preheat the oven to 160°C/Fan 140°C/Gas 3. Grease an 18cm square shallow cake tin and line the base and sides with baking parchment.
2. Spread the oats, nuts and seeds on a large baking tray and place in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes until just lightly toasted, stirring once with a wooden spatula.
3. Place the butter, sugar and honey in a large saucepan and heat gently until the butter has melted. Tip the warm oat mixture into the pan and mix thoroughly then stir in the cranberries or raisins and nearly all the sesame seeds.
4. Turn the mixture into the prepared tin and level with the back of a spoon, pressing down firmly. Scatter over the rest of the sesame seeds.
5. Bake in the oven for 25-30 minutes or until just pale golden around the edges. Leave to cool in the tin for 10 minutes, then use the tip of a knife to mark into 8 bars. Leave in the tin until cold then lift out, using the lining paper to help you. Peel away the paper and cut through the marks to make 8 bars. You can vary the nuts and fruit you add to these wholesome bars. Try different nuts, such as walnuts or hazelnuts and replace half the cranberries with goji berries or chopped dried apricots or dates.

LIFE BEGINS
Celebrating A Life How The UK Has Embraced Independent Funerals Nowadays if you happen to see a group of people emerging from a church or crematorium after a funeral service, the chances are that instead of hearing faint strains of Verdi’s Requiem emanating from inside, you’ll hear a chorus of Monty Python’s “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life” (recently voted the most popular song played at UK funerals) booming out through the open doors.
You probably won’t find mourners dressed in black, either. If they’re not all wearing outfits in the deceased’s favourite shade of blue, purple or yellow, they may be dressed in clothes that seem more suitable for a party than a funeral. But this doesn’t mean we’ve become less respectful towards the dead: far from it. It simply follows the current trend in funerals, where the end of life is now seen as an occasion for reflection and celebration. In recent years the special qualities of the person who has passed away – their interests, successes, challenges and good deeds – have become the main focus of the funeral service. Nowadays speakers at funerals are even likely to throw in the odd joke as they talk about the person who has died: something that would have been unimaginable fifty years ago. It’s a fitting tribute to a life well lived, and provides an alternative approach to a traditional religious ceremony. Another change you might notice is that a casket made of cardboard, bamboo or willow has replaced the standard wooden coffin, and this is thanks to
78
the growing interest in more eco-friendly funerals. A ‘green’ funeral may encompass anything from simply placing the body in a non-toxic, biodegradable casket, to observing stricter environmental practices such as using biodegradable shrouds, banning embalming with formaldehyde products and placing a tree or natural stone to mark the grave rather than an engraved headstone. Many people choose to bury their loved ones in a specially designated field or woodland area in preference to a churchyard or other traditional burial ground. The idea behind natural burial is to be at one with nature, but families should be aware that marking and tending the grave is often discouraged at natural burial sites, so make sure you have read and understood the site’s policy before arranging the burial. The Natural Death Centre - www.naturaldeath.org.uk - has a list of grounds all around the UK and there are new sites opening every year. The Natural Death Centre is also happy to advise on ‘DIY’ funerals. There is no legal requirement to use the services of a funeral director, but while
you may have good reasons for wanting to go it alone, many families find it very daunting to arrange the practicalities of a funeral without any support from an undertaker.
to help people find a funeral director that is right for them. You can use the search facility on their website to locate local services and even read user reviews.
Even Angus Townley, who has published a blog on his experiences of arranging an independent funeral for his mother (see www.owletthall. com/an-independent-funeral/) admits: “A funeral director gives peace of mind as they have the experience of getting through all the necessary bureaucratic hoops. Clearly one only has a single chance to get it right.”
If the deceased was not particularly religious, then a humanist celebrant may be the right person to lead the burial or cremation ceremony. The British Humanist Association (www.humanism.org.uk) provides information on how to get in touch with a celebrant and what it will cost you to use their services.
A middle way might be to look for a funeral director who will provide you with as much or as little help as you need. Funeral Advisor (www.funeraladvisor.org.uk) is a not-for-profit social enterprise, completely independent of the funeral industry, which aims
Many humanist celebrants specialise in funerals and are therefore familiar with cremation and burial procedures. The celebrant will meet with the family members or friends most closely connected with the person who has died in order to learn more about their life
and personality and write an appropriate tribute (you’ll be able to approve their draft prior to the funeral). They can also offer ideas for creating an order of service and advise on music and poetry readings, as well as giving guidance on practical matters such as the sound and lighting equipment at the crematorium and the amount of time available for the committal. Planning a funeral is never easy, but in recent years the breakdown of many of the taboos that previously surrounded mourning and funerals has helped friends and families express their feelings in a much more personal way. But perhaps the greatest advantage of this new freedom is that it gives space for people suffering the anguish of loss to grieve in a way that brings them the greatest comfort and solace. GARDENING
Feathered Friends by Pippa Greenwood www.pippagreenwood.com
Watching wild birds in your garden is a real delight, and the fact that many of them also help to keep pests at bay for much of the year means that it makes sense to do everything you can to encourage them in.
Gardens which are very regimented and sparse are much less likely to prove a haven for wild birds, but if you have a fair number of potential hiding places such as a few good sized shrubs or trees, then so much the better. Obviously trees which provide berries or other fruits are always going to be welcome and, although it means that the display of autumnal berries you looked forward to is slightly foreshortened, you can be sure that the birds eating them will have put them to good use! But what else can you do to encourage your feathered friends into the garden? There is no doubt about it that a source of water really is one of the best features you can have. There are many ornamental birdbaths available, or you can create something cheap and just as effective using a shallow dish with sloping sides. The water should be no deeper than 2” (5 cm) if it is to be safely used by a wide range of birds, and if you do have a deeper container then you should fill the lower depths of it with good sized stones, so that the water is not too deep. Ideally the water should be
84
changed every other day, but at this time of year when freezing temperatures prevail, it is essential to make sure that the water does not become frozen over for long periods of time. Don’t forget that other garden water features, including ponds with shallow sloping sides, are perfect for many birds to feed and bathe in. Providing birds with additional food materials is also well worthwhile, but do remember that you need to maintain a constant supply of food or else they may come to rely on something that is not there when they need it most. If you have a problem with squirrels, then feeding the birds can be a real nightmare – but on the whole, the heavily armoured looking wire structures which rather resemble bird cages and hold a central cylinder of peanuts seem to work well. Admittedly these will set you back anything up to £40, but they do seem to do the job. If squirrels are not a problem, you can use many of the cheaper nut feeders with great success, but of course wherever you position the feeder you should ensure that it is well out of range of the local cat

population. Site the feeder in an area where a cat cannot leap up at it, or where there are no other plants nearby from which it can make its ambush. Save household scraps for the birds too; there are lots of things they enjoy eating including apples which have lost their appeal to the household, cooked rice, cheese, old breakfast cereal, raisins and sultanas and, of
course, bread. You can also buy fat balls which contain large quantities of mixed seeds, and these can be hung from trees or large shrubs where they will provide a fantastic meal for many birds and, provided you position them in a suitable spot, means that you can also enjoy watching them as they feed. Having once found a blue-tit caught by the foot in a fat ball’s net, I now only buy the net-free fat balls. Luckily I happened to pass the feeder soon after the bird had been trapped, so was able to cut it free, but the outcome could have been tragic! If you wish, and if you have a strong enough stomach, you can buy numerous grubs and larvae which you can feed to the birds. These high protein bird snacks are particularly useful
for birds once they start feeding their young in the spring and are best distributed on a bird table or even on a garage roof. They are available by mail order from various companies as well as in garden centres and pet shops. If you feel like making or buying a bird table on which to set out the feasts you are supplying, then so much the better. Remember to choose one which is not easily accessible by cats, and position it in a place where you can sit indoors or on a garden seat and watch the birds as they feed and drink. I mainly feed the birds on top of an old, established hedge. It is just tall enough for me to reach its flat clipped top surface and I put out bird food on flat wooden trays – perfect for me to view and impossible for cats to get the wrong idea about who is meant to be eating!

The Importance Of Brushing Your Dog’s Teeth Regularly brushing your dog’s teeth from an early age can prevent serious medical issues such as heart, liver and kidney disease. Don’t expect them to thank you for it though. Most dogs dislike having their teeth brushed, but starting a routine while they are still young will help you both adjust. You’ll need to buy toothpaste specifically for dogs, as the fluoride in human toothpaste is poisonous to them. Gain their confidence slowly It is a good idea to let them get used to the taste of toothpaste before brushing. They should lick it off your finger to start with, and then off the brush you are going to use. Once accustomed to the taste of their toothpaste and the sight of the brush, it won’t be such a shock when you first brush their teeth properly. What type of brush? There are various types of toothbrush on the market for your pet – some people prefer to use a ‘finger brush’ when their dog is young, as this type of brush is soft and small, giving you more control when brushing. As your dog grows, however, a larger brush may be more suitable, and these are available in various shapes and sizes. Initially, it is a good idea to only brush your dog’s front teeth – let them get used to that and then gradually try to brush more. Reassuring the dog will help, as will treating them to a game or a walk afterwards.
