Dear Neighbours You will probably know that the Olympic torch is coming to Winchester on the 11th July and to Southampton on the 14th July. Being rather cynical, I couldn’t initially see what the fuss is about. But I’ve changed my mind. You see, it’s not just about seeing a flame being carried; the real opportunity is to cheer on the people from this region who have been chosen to carry the torch. When I was researching the details of the route, I went to the London 2012 website where it listed the torch bearers and a little bit of information about them (www.london2012.com/torch-relay/ torchbearers). The stories are in equal part inspiring and humbling in that there are so many people out there who seem to achieve so much more than the average person. Sometimes the individuals have personal challenges to deal with and yet still manage to contribute to society and to all around them; and sometimes the torch bearer is just an ordinary person who has devoted so much of their time to help others. Every one of them looks to be deserving of this recognition and honour so I wish them the very best for their day and – please – could someone just switch off the rain for a few hours. Whatever the weather is doing as I write my letter (no prizes for guessing there), we can safely assume there will be some nice days between now and the end of August. We are running a feature this month on the National Gardens Scheme and also have highlighted the gardens open nearest to Chandlers Ford during July and August. Like going to a new build show home, other people’s gardens draw visitors out of curiousity as much as for inspiration. Together with our usual what’s on listings and Hampshire Heritage highlighting two outdoors places worth visiting, you should be able to find somewhere different to go to when one of those precious, rare, but so lovely English summer days eventually arrives. Have a great summer! Tania

DISCOVER NATIONAL G ARDEN SCHEME
The National Garden Scheme In 1927 the National Gardens Scheme was founded with the aim of raising money for the nurses of the Queen’s Nursing Institute (QNI). The idea was to ask individuals to open up quality private gardens for ‘a shilling a head’. At that time garden visiting was already a well-established pastime, but only for a privileged few. However in the first year of the NGS over £8,000 was raised from visitors to 609 gardens. A network of volunteer County Organisers was set up and by 1931 over 1,000 private gardens were open. Country Life magazine produced a handbook, known as “The Yellow Book” because of its bright cover. After the Second World War, the National Health Service took on the District Nursing Service, but money was still needed to care for retired nurses and invest in training so the NGS continued as before. Then in 1948 the NGS offered to join forces with the National Trust to restore and preserve important gardens and, in return, the National Trust opened many of its most prestigious gardens. Despite massive inflation in the post-war years, the entrance fee was held at one shilling. More realistic entrance fees were introduced in the 1970s and the gardens began to raise significant donations. In 1980 The National Gardens Scheme Charitable Trust was established as an independent charity, with Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother as Patron and Her Royal Highness Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester as President. In 1984 Macmillan Cancer Relief joined the list of beneficiary charities. In the years that followed other charities joined including Marie Curie Cancer Care, Help the Hospices and Crossroads Caring for Carers. Of the original gardens that were opened, 120 are accessible for the 85th anniversary in 2012. In addition around 3700 more gardens will be open raising around £2.6 million. Originally the gardens were predominantly the large grounds of stately homes with teams of gardeners maintaining them. But now many more small gardens open, from cottages to
terraced houses and in a community effort many neighbouring and nearby properties open their gates on the same day to enable visitors to delight in a range of styles and plants within a few hours. As much part of a day out to see the gardens is the opportunity to buy plants and to enjoy tea and cakes. Around 80% of the funds raised by both entry to the gardens and from the sale of plants and refreshments goes back to the NGS and in turn to their nominated charities. If you are a regular visitor then the NGS still produces its Yellow Book which is a directory of gardens open throughout the UK (available from the website or from bookshops), and county booklets which are available from libraries or can be downloaded from the website. In addition both regular and occasional visitors can benefit from using the excellent NGS website (www.ngs.org.uk) where you can search within a region and even narrow the results down to a specific day. Inspiration for your garden, raising money for charity and cake – it doesn’t get much better than that! (For Scottish Gardens visit www.scotlandsgardens.org)

DISCOVER SHORT STORY
Short Story The Battenberg Relay The sugar on the last slice of Battenberg cake twinkled in the afternoon sun. Kevin licked his lips and glanced round. On the patio, Dad was distracted trying to find a picture on the portable TV so that he, Uncle Mick and Granddad could watch the men’s 400 metre relay. As Kevin reached up to take the cake, his mum appeared from nowhere and slapped the back of his hand. “Hands off, Auntie Ivy wants that,” she said. With silver tongs she lifted the slice of yellow and pink sponge wrapped in marzipan and placed it carefully on a tea plate. “But she’s had two pieces already,” Kevin whined. “You shouldn’t be counting. I can’t trust you with this, where’s Francis?” Francis was about to help himself to a fistful of crisps. Mum thrust the plate into his hand and pointed him in the direction of Ivy. Auntie Ivy was sprawled asleep on a lounger at the far end of the garden. Francis sullenly took the plate and, as Mum turned her back, he winked at Kevin and gave the cake a long wet lick. Grinning, Francis set off across the lawn. Cousin Hannah intercepted him waving a Swing Ball bat. “Play a game with me Francis, Robin’s rubbish.” Little Robin threw down his bat and stuck out his bottom lip. “I didn’t want to play anyway.” “Take this to Auntie Ivy for me then.” Francis handed the tea plate to Robin, and picked up the bat. Wiping his nose on the back of his hand, Robin walked unsteadily in Ivy’s direction. A curious wasp circled the plate, upon which Robin panicked and tripped over the hosepipe sending him and the cake sprawling across a pile of grass cuttings. Cousin Lucy, witnessing the fall, came running over. “It’s for Auntie Ivy,” Robin sobbed. “And I’ve ruined it.” “Never mind, go and find your mum, I’ll take it to Ivy.” Lucy said turning the cake over to the clean side. Meanwhile, Michael from next door, who was only

there because he was hoping to see Lucy, was sitting on the bench swing wearing shades and sipping from a can of Top Deck. He beckoned her over. She grinned and squeezed in next to him, still clutching the plate. Robin’s wasp however, was still in pursuit and now found itself unable to choose between the cake and Michael’s drink. Making an error of judgement it landed with a buzz on Michael’s top lip. Michael, losing the cool he had spent all afternoon creating, sprayed a shower of pop all over himself, Lucy and the cake. Mortified, they both ran off in opposite directions to find napkins. Kevin had been sat by the garden wall squashing red spider mites and watching the progress of the Battenberg cake, now abandoned on the chair. With a furtive look round, he picked it up and inspected it. No one was looking. The cake was all his for the taking. The sponge was covered in dried grass, a fine mist of pop and a swirl of lick and he realised to his dismay that he no longer wanted it. “Auntie Ivy,” he called holding the plate out to her. She opened one eye. “Kevin, is that my cake? You took your time,” she said, awkwardly pushing herself upright. She didn’t even glance at the cake as she picked it up and swallowed it in one huge mouthful. At that moment, with almost uncanny coincidence, there was an explosion of cheers from the crowd sat around the portable TV, making Kevin jump out of his guilty skin. by Jackie Brewster

Have you or a relative paid Nursing Home fees in the last eight years? “There’s nothing more distressing after losing a parent than finding out that their savings did not need to be spent on their care home fees. The system has let many people down very badly indeed.” This is the view of Jonathan Anderson, an experienced Will and Trust Specialist and founder of www. Recovernursinghomefees.com. Jonathan is currently progressing dozens of compensation assessments in the south of England where the lack of standardised criteria used in assessing who pays Nursing Home fees has potentially left families tens of thousands of pounds worse off. “Unfortunately differences in assessment between different UK Health Authorities has created a postcode lottery in whether the

Primary Care Trust (PCT) or individuals have had to pay for care” Jonathan explained. “The Government has acknowledged that this has been unfair and have set aside a billion pounds in compensation.“ Compensation claims are open to anyone who was/is paying for residential care from April 2004 but there are deadlines to register cases, the earliest of which is September 2012. “If you think that the fee assessment was not properly handled then it’s imperative to start the ball rolling now” Jonathan told us. “Our no win no fee policy means there is absolutely no barrier to anyone starting the process.” Once a case is accepted, a home visit prepares all the paperwork and all cases are submitted with an expert medical report produced by Senior Medical Practioners with experience of elderly care. “Compensation is not going to bring back a relative who has sadly passed away but helping to recover a financial legacy that was lost due to poor PCT practices is very important for the families left behind.”

Claim back Nursing Home Fees today Did any of your elderly relatives have to fund their own nursing home care? If so, you may be able to claim these fees back!
If an elderly relative was, or has been, incorrectly assessed by the Primary Care Trust, the fees can be reclaimed retrospectively from a fund set aside by the Government. A claim can be made either for a relative currently in a nursing home or who passed away from 1st April 2004. ● 1 Billion+ has been set aside by the Government to be reclaimed. ● The average retrospective claim refund is £60,000. ● The largest claim in the South to date is £320,000. ● Home visit by specialist to complete all of the paperwork with you.

diy Probate Can Run Big Risks Whilst a getting a professional to draft your Will is the best way to ensure Trusts are created to save tax, those who inherit avoid paying care fees and the likelihood of potential disputes is reduced, it is entirely possible to apply for probate and deal with an estate of someone who has passed away without seeing a lawyer. This is not, however, without risk. A recent communication I received from a legal group entitled ‘Solicitors for the Elderly’ or ‘SFE’ has alerted those of us in the profession to a noticeable increase in the number of what they call ‘DIYers’ returning to solicitors in order to seek advice when they feel they have made a mistake or find paperwork too complex and arduous. Let’s take the example of Mrs Smith who passed away leaving a Will which included a tax-saving Trust. When her husband decided to administer his late wife’s estate, he simply paid the whole estate to himself. Whilst this may have made perfect sense at the time, a solicitor was thankfully able to intervene and provide Mr Smith with insight into the ramifications of what he had done. If Mr Smith’s Will had been left as it was, involving the assets of his late wife’s estate, there would have been huge complications after he died for any of his beneficiaries. Let’s take another case of Mr Jones who sold
some shares that had made a gain during the administration of his late sister’s estate and had to pay tax. If he had transferred the shares to himself first, before selling them, he could have avoided the tax, but he simply did not know. People aren’t always aware of the complexities and assume probate work is straightforward. It is true that it in certain circumstances it can be, but very often it isn’t. The SFE are encouraging people to realize that in all but the most straightforward cases, it is important to seek timely specialist legal advice that can actually save you money and worry. We are more than happy to work in partnership with the deceased’s family to help and support them with the legal and technical work. As specialists, we often add value to our consultations and work, for example by identifying cases where money is owed to the estate for care funding which should have been met by the NHS and we can then assist in making a claim. Personally, I believe that peace of mind is the real benefit from seeing a professional from a legal team such as we have across all five branches of Eric Robinson Solicitors. I honestly think that people owe it to themselves and their benefactors to make sure that they have got the most out of what is left to them. by Catherine Maxfield

HAMPSHIRE HERITAGE A Breath of Fresh Air No one could accuse our English weather of being predictable. After six weeks of rain and wintry cold, it changed overnight in late May to Mediterranean sunshine only to revert to rain and wind a week or so later. However, trapped indoors by the cold, wet spring, when we do have a few good days, many of us are now eager to be out in the fresh air . So this month I’m going to suggest a couple of places to catch up with the great outdoors. a high spot First, a Hampshire high spot – Old Winchester Hill. Its name is misleading, because it isn’t in or near Winchester. It’s beside the Meon Valley about 2 miles SE of Warnford. It’s a National Nature Reserve of 156 acres, managed by Natural England. At its summit, Old Winchester Hill is 646 feet high. At the top there’s an Iron Age hill fort and some Bronze Age burial barrows that date to about 4,000 BC. It’s a great place for bucketfuls of fresh air and good – though in places steep – walking. It’s also possible to enjoy a gentler and almost completely level walk on ancient turf (so kind to the feet) if you stay beside the main bridleway. The views in all
directions from the summit of the hill amply repay the effort of getting there. The reserve’s unspoiled chalk downland is a good place for birds, butterflies and wildflowers, especially orchids. Fly, Bee, and Frog Orchids all occur. Green Woodpeckers favour the many anthills, and Kestrels hang in the updraughts of the hill, seeking voles. Many other birds may be seen. The reserve (OS grid reference SU643205) is signposted and reached by a narrow lane that leaves the A32 at Warnford, almost opposite the George and Falcon pub. The reserve is open to the public free of charge. It has no facilities other than a car park and an information hut. In addition to the main car park, there is a three-bay parking and viewing area for disabled people about ¼ mile south of the main car park. A further ¼ mile south is an entrance to a car park for limited-mobility visitors. This allows an Easy Access trail to be followed for about a third of a mile. The trail has several resting places and viewing points. In order to pass through a locked gate to reach the disabled parking area, a RADAR key is necessary (http://www.radar-shop.org.uk/). http://www.naturalengland.org.uk/ourwork/ conservation/designatedareas/nnr/1006115.aspx ...Continued on page 62

Working from home Office Politics If there’s one thing I thought I’d never miss, it’s office politics. All that bitching and bellyaching and backbiting. I was a victim of it myself, which is why I’m now working from home. The truth is, I was never any good at it. I didn’t understand how it worked, nor why anybody should choose to indulge in it. As far as I was concerned, you did your work, you went home, you got paid; and everybody else did pretty much the same. I was always too honest, or (if truth be told) too slow in the wits to realise that life wasn’t like that. Take character assassination. I know how it’s done now. You have to pick the right moments – in casual conversation (preferably out of the office rather than in the middle of a meeting) to sow the seeds of doubt about a colleague’s performance. You have to dress it up right: damning with faint praise is far more effective than outright condemnation. You have to build up to it, to insinuate yourself with the right people, to create the image of the positive, helpful, sympathetic workmate rather than the envious, hate-filled sac of venom you actually are. I was always too polite, though. I believed that if you

can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all. Then there’s empire-building. Personally, being bone idle, I couldn’t believe that anybody would actually want more responsibility. Come five, my jacket was off the back of the chair and I was down the pub. If anybody was fool enough to want to take over some of my remit, more fool them. Then one day I woke up to find I didn’t have any remit left. So here I am, working from home. Well, perhaps I wasn’t as stupid as all that. I vaguely perceived that there were people who wanted to increase their influence at the expense of mine, and on the rare occasions when I managed to pull one over on them I was mightily pleased with myself. But I was no Iago. I wasn’t subtle enough, or persistent enough. I couldn’t be bothered to worm my way into the inner circle. By the time I walked out of the office door for the last time and entered the wonderful world of working from home I was heartily glad to be free of office politics and never dreamt I’d miss it. But after all, it’s human contact of a sort, even if they’re humans you really want to drop breeze-

blocks on from the top of a very tall building. It keeps you sharp. And besides, I think I’d be much better at it now. I could be good at being the boss’s blue-eyed boy if I put my mind to it. So I’m going to practise, although as a one-man band it might not be easy. I’m going to network surreptitiously with myself so I can blacken my reputation behind my back. I’m going to use my good standing with myself to gain ownership of my department’s operations. I’m going to claim the credit for all my successes while shifting the blame onto myself for all my shortcomings. I’m going to withhold vital information from myself and finally, albeit reluctantly, I’m going to have to let myself go. Then I’m going to have to replace myself with someone who’s more of a team player, someone who shares the company’s focus, someone who’s more directed towards common goals. Myself. by Ted Bruning

Holidays in Yore
There’s a school of thought that says you won’t actually save any money by staying in Britain for your holidays this summer. Okay, so you won’t have to pay for air fares and car hire; but while the price of everything is going through the roof over here, the strong pound means you can buy your own Aegean island for half a packet of fags and the Euros you didn’t bother to change back into sterling last year. Be that as it may, more and more people are celebrating the recession by holidaying at home; and for them, the search is on for something to do. Well, heritage is one of Britain’s strong points – just as well, given our climate – but it needn’t mean trying to keep the kids quiet while gawping at some stately home. It can also mean watching complete idiots doing the hilarious things they’ve been doing since the Days of Yore. Take the Oxenhope Straw Race, for example, when teams of two compete to lug a bale of straw round all five pubs in the village, downing – naturally – a pint of ale at each pub. It’s only a two-and-a-half mile course, and the bales weigh about 40lbs each, so it’s not exactly Geoff Capes territory. But this being North Yorkshire there isn’t a flat road in the place; and straw bales, of course, have no handles, so the contestants have to come up with all sorts of ingenious (and unmotorised) gizmos to carry them. These range from a couple of broomsticks stuck through the bale to – no kidding – the back half of a car converted into a kind of rickshaw. The event is hugely popular – it has attracted as many as 400 teams in some years, and raises £10,000-odd for charity. But actually, it’s not all that Yore-ish: it was dreamed up by a couple of local lads after a night on the ale only 35 years ago. But that’s how traditions start! This year’s event is on Sunday 1st July; visit www.strawrace.com for more details including how to enter. For something more genuinely ancient visit Devon for the opening of Honiton Fair on Tuesday 24th July. The fair is a genuine survivor of the hundreds chartered in the 13th century and is always opened by a procession led by the Town Crier carrying a golden glove on the end of a pole to symbolise – well, something. Probably. Anyway, the procession is enlivened by the ritual throwing of pennies from the upstairs windows of pubs along the route, and in Days of Yore the pennies were red hot so the bountiful gentry could laugh themselves silly watching the starving yokels burn their fingers as they scrambled desperately for the largesse. Don’cha just love them crazy Days of Yore?

Even more Yore is the Ould Lammas Fair in Ballycastle, Co Antrim, on 27th28th August. This is vastly popular and attracts swarms of visitors to the tiny seaside town, so be patient as you sit in the traffic. It’s groaning with history, though: Lammas is a pagan festival that followed the hay-harvest and marked the return of the sheep and cattle from their upland summer pastures. This is a fairly standard fair, albeit a big one, with sideshows and loads and loads of traditional music: the silly thing, though, is that it’s when everybody eats dried red seaweed. Dulse, as it’s called, is said to be quite nice really, although if it was that nice they’d eat it on more than two days of the year, wouldn’t they? Another very Yore event that probably started off as a Lammastide celebration is the Highland Gathering (better known as the Highland Games) at Braemar on Saturday 1st September. Lammas was when all the spouse-hungry young lads tried to impress the maidens with various feats of manly prowess: hence tossing the caber, throwing the hammer,
DIS COV E R C H A N D L E R S FO R D J U LY & AU G US T 2012 putting the stone. Oh yes, and playing the bagpipes. Loads of those at Braemar! Possibly as ancient – although probably not – as the Lammas celebrations is the Abbot’s Bromley Horn Dance on Monday 10th September. Basically, this is morris dancing not with bells on, but with reindeer antlers on, because the dancers wear headgear made of reindeer antlers which have been carbon-dated to the time of the Norman Conquest. The dancers leave the church (where the antlers are kept) after a blessing at 8am and make their way through the Staffordshire town to Blithfield Hall for a spot of lunch (and as the heaviest set of antlers weighs 25lb, the dancers have earned their refreshment!). In the afternoon they dance back, and the whole thing ends at 8pm with another service in the church. Now this could well be a survival from prehistoric days, given the antlers; on the other hand it could be connected with the town’s Barthelmy Fair, chartered in 1221 and abolished by the Roundheads; but on the other other hand, assuming you have three hands, the use of the antlers wasn’t recorded until 1686, so it might all be a bit of Restoration whimsy. You pays your money, you takes your choice. Lots of other stuff goes on at the same time; visit www.abbotsbromley.com for more info. full workshop facilities mot testing petrol/diesel all makes and models serviced free local collection and delivery free fitting of tyres, exhausts and batteries
And finally, another 13thcentury fair, another silly tradition. This is the Egremont Crab Fair in West Optimist on the run, via Wikimedia Commons, CC-BY-SA-3 Cumbria on Saturday 15th September, named after the crab apples which were once an important crop round here but now world-famous as home of the international and quite possibly intergalactic gurning championship. Gurning is the Yore equivalent of a knobbly knees contest, in which the (mostly ancient and toothless) competitors simply pull funny faces, using a horse-collar as a frame. In Yore, it was a common feature of local fairs, alongside fighting with sticks and torturing harmless bulls, badgers, cocks etc. As the least sadistic of the pastimes of Yore it has managed to survive; and, like punk rock, anybody can do it. Just remember to leave your dentures at home!

THE CHANDLERS FORD DIRECTORY LOCAL NEWS & VIEWS
‘Knights’ VICTORIOUS St Francis Knights, Valley Parks victorious football team, has enjoyed a brilliant season winning the Tyro under 15 league by a high margin. Stats that read played 17, won 16, with 81 goals for and just 15 goals against tell their own story. The success of the team has been built upon impressively high levels of fitness, bags of skill and commitment and a brilliant team spirit that has been second to none. Sponsored by County Fire Extinguishers and County Councillor Alan Dowden's Community allocation fund, the team which was first established in 1994 is managed by Ray Taylor, who has been ably supported by trainers Suk Shahi and Andy Petley, with Gurcharan Shahi providing that all important admin support to ensure everything runs smoothly for the team. Asked why the team has done so well, Suk Shahi focussed on the fact that the team is primarily made up of lads from Valley Park and the surrounding area, which means many of them go to school and socialise together, and the resulting friendships have in turn made
a massive contribution to their enthusiasm for working together to form a competitive and effective team unit. As Suk says, ‘it’s a real pleasure to be talking so positively about fifteen of our local young people who have achieved so much by working well together and who as a result are turning out to be a credit to both themselves and their families’. Next season the team will move up to play in the Southampton under 16 Youth League, but will continue to play their home fixtures at Knightwood Leisure Centre. If you would like to see youth football at its best, come along and support your local team when the new season gets under way in September. For more information about the team please contact Suk Shahi on either 07583 602741 or by email at sukshahi@hotmail.co.uk
Football Referees for the Future The game of football can’t properly take place without well trained referees, so it’s very encouraging to report that two members of the St Francis Knights team, Arjun Shahi and Ben Taylor have both recently completed their initial training and are now qualified as Hampshire FA referees. Both young men are currently qualified to referee under 14 matches. They officiate on average at 2 matches a month and report that their experiences to date have been very enjoyable. Arjun, Ben and many other of the St Francis Knights team are active members of the KWOOD Youth Club who meet on Friday evenings at Knightwood Leisure Centre. KWOOD were impressed by Arjun and Bens

initiative to take on this important refereeing role and were therefore delighted to join parents in providing sponsorship funds to support their training costs. If you are interested in following Arjun and Bens example, first level Referee courses run by the Hampshire FA are open to male and female candidates aged 14 or over and take place throughout the year. back to sea level My other suggestion could hardly be more different – Titchfield Haven National Nature Reserve at Hill Head, near Fareham. The reserve, which is at sea level, consists mainly of a series of shallow lakes near the mouth of the river Meon at Hill Head. Six quite widely dispersed viewing hides provide good views not only of birds but if you are lucky of other wildlife, including fox and roe deer. ‘Darters Dip’ has been created to attract dragonflies. The walks between the hides provide fresh air and exercise. The reserve is child- (but not dog-) friendly. A family ticket (two adults, two children) costs £9.50. If you have them, take binoculars. Avocets are among the birds you can hope to see. There is a modern reception centre that includes a wellstocked gift and book shop, toilet facilities, and a café serving snacks and light meals. Entry to the visitor centre and café is free, and some of the reserve is overlooked from a public viewing area near the sea front, where parking is also free. The seafront road has excellent views across the Solent to the Isle of Wight. Yacht races are often taking place. It is a popular spot at weekends. Just across the road from the visitor centre is Hill Head harbour, a picturesque yacht basin. When the tide is in, a

flotilla of ducks awaits food expectantly, but you are asked not to feed bread, which is not good for them. The visitor centre sells small bags of an appropriate seed for feeding to the ducks. The road here is busy and close by, so do be careful with young children. Visitor Centre and Reserve, Cliff Road, Hill Head, Fareham, Hampshire PO14 3JT Tel 01329 662145. http://www3.hants.gov.uk/ countryside/titchfield.htm Nearby pubs include the Osborne Arms at Hill Head, with marvellous views across the Solent to the Isle of Wight, and the Crofton in Crofton Road, Stubbington. The Crofton belies its 1960s estate pub exterior. Inside it is a spacious and popular pub serving a good variety of food. But wherever you go and whatever the weather, enjoy it. There’s nothing like fresh air and gentle exercise for improving the outlook.

DISCOVER MONTHLY FEATURE
Crop Circles Mischief Makers or aliens? As we come into August, this is the best time to go out and see what delights the Andy Goldsworthys of the skies have left us to marvel at this year. Actually, crop circles “appear” around the world throughout spring, summer, and autumn – whenever and wherever there’s a standing crop. But with a fair chance of decent weather and the kids on holiday and needing some diversion, August may be the right month to go and see one, perhaps as part of a day out in the country which might include a pub lunch and a couple of hours in a traffic jam on the A303 (because an awful lot of crop circles “appear” in the Stonehenge area). I say “appear” in quotation marks because of course the contentiousness about them is how they’re made, or more especially who or what they’re made by: freak weather, outer space visitors or human pranksters. Crop circles have been reported sporadically since the 17th century, and the first investigation of their cause, in Surrey in 1880, put them down to “cyclonic wind action”, extraterrestrials having not yet been thought of. From the 1970s, though, they were reported more and more often, attracting more media attention and more theories about their origin. I needn’t go into detail, but by 1991 there was a large body of opinion that they were the work of UFOs or their occupants. Unfortunately for the UFO theorists, in that year a couple of blokes called Doug Brewer and Dave Chorley claimed to have made most if not all of them using nothing more sophisticated than a plank and a length of rope, and were more than happy to be filmed doing so. Since then there have been crop circle

competitions and manufacturers including Nike have used their logos rendered as crop circles in advertising. There’s even a group called Circlemakers that specialises in creating ever more intricate patterns and, like Doug and Dave, is happy to be filmed doing it. But it takes more than a video of a couple of guys with a plank and a length of rope to convince the UFO theorists and although I don’t wish to be disrespectful of sincerely-held views it always seems a bit strange to me to favour a theory you can’t prove over an alternative that can be demonstrated, filmed, and repeated on demand. The UFO theorists – who, given their refusal to believe the evidence of their own eyes, ought to be called the “sceptics” in this case – can point to lots of oddities and anomalies that suggest that Doug, Dave and their successors didn’t create all of the crop circles in the world; but then, we don’t know who painted all of the paintings in the world, but that’s no reason to suggest that extraterrestrials did. I raise the subject of paintings deliberately, because I don’t really care whether it was a couple of blokes or alien astronauts: my point is, crop circles are beautiful and they serve no practical purpose - to me that makes them art. Anyway, believe what you want to believe. But if you’re having one of those Dunkirk-spirit make-the-best-of-the-recession “holidays at home” this July and August, just Google one of the million or so regularly-updated websites devoted to the subject, choose a crop circle near you, and visit it. You’ll love it. Who needs art galleries? by Ted Bruning

THE CHANDLERS FORD DIRECTORY MOTORING
Peugeot 208 Model: Peugeot 208
MPG: 62.7
Price: From £9,995
Emissions: 104g/km
Engine: 1.2 Litre, 3cyl Residual values Power: 88bhp, 118Nm (three years): TBC, but expect them on Max speed: 108mph a par with VW Polo 0-60mph: 11.1s In the glory days, Peugeot shifted 7.7 million 206s and the iconic 205 before that found 5.2 million homes. The lacklustre 207 however never caught buyers’ imaginations - flopping with just 2.3 million shifted during its lifecycle. Now the French firm is hoping the all new 208 can bring back the glory days and sales success to its dealers once again. However, things are a lot tougher these days. Back in 2001, there were just 16 rivals in the B segment in which the 200 series models compete. Fast forward ten years and now there are 27 direct rivals vying for car buyers’ cash. But Peugeot hopes its new challenger can tackle the market leading Ford Fiesta head on. Aimed squarely at the sector sales leaders, the French firm hopes cute looks, competitive pricing and higher spec than rivals will be enough to tempt buyers to turn French. Sales of the 208 will ultimately make up a third of Peugeot dealers’ volume too, and in 2013 the firm hopes to shift 45,000 units, so there’s some serious weight on this little hatch’s shoulders. But is it any good? Well, yes and no. Firstly there’s an impressive choice of engines. There are five petrol units and five diesels to choose from and with sales expected to be split 50/50 between the fuel types that comes as little surprise. We tried the petrol 1.6-litre 155bhp, diesel 1.6-litre HDI with 115bhp, and the 1.2-litre three cylinder petrol. The diesel was excellent, but our pick has to be the characterful 1.2-litre with 82bhp and 118Nm of torque. It’s both great fun to drive yet economical too, returning

62.7mpg on the combined cycle and emitting just 104g/km. On the road it’s really rather good. Dynamically it’s composed and even in the lesser powered models it’s good fun to chuck around bends. The ride quality is impressive, but we did find the steering very light in town. The driving position is also strange with a tiny steering wheel that’s hard to position without obscuring the clocks. Overall, though, it drives like a little French hatch back should do - and we mean that in a positive way! The sales clincher is really on the spec sheets. Peugeot has aimed for all trim levels to be just that little bit better than Fiesta - and in this market that’s vital. The most popular trim, taking 40 per cent of sales, will be the Active. As standard on this model you have that all important air con, a touchscreen display, 15-inch alloys, cruise control, Bluetooth with audio streaming and USB. There are plenty of options too, notably sat nav, which unfortunately is a little fiddly to use. Overall, we can’t help but like the 208 and it’s clear there’s a very good car in there waiting to escape (that’ll be the GTI). However, the design is a little fussy inside and out and the Ford Fiesta is a well established and popular rival. Priced from £9,995, the new 208 goes head to head with key rivals from Ford and Vauxhall. However, it remains to be seen whether its funky new looks and tech advances will be enough to bring the glory days back to Peugeot once again. by James Baggott, editor of Car Dealer Magazine (CarDealerMag.co.uk)

Freecycle®
Although small items are always welcomed by the charity shops, they don’t usually take electrical goods, larger items or pieces of furniture. However you can use The Freecycle® Network (online only) to find a new home for your unwanted clutter. This worldwide initiative – with local groups - is a way of giving away goods which you may not need but are still usable by others. The listings are text only so you don’t need to worry about pictures, and people will mail you via the site if they are interested. You choose one of the replies and the goods are usually collected within 24 hours – often much more quickly so it’s a very efficient way of recycling. It’s also a good place to go if you want something, although you have to have offered something before you can place a ‘wanted’ listing. You have to register as a Yahoo user first and then you can post messages which must be in the format Offered: Short Description, Location e.g. Offered: Portable TV, Chandlers Ford http://groups.yahoo.com/group/EastleighFreecycle/messages
