Hello and Welcome You may remember that I mentioned in my letter back in March this year that my mother had passed away. Well, her house is about to be sold as I write, and my brother and I have had a taxing month trying to finish clearing the property, not to mention my Mum’s friend who found her car loaded up to the roof every time she came anywhere near us. The easy thing to do would have been just to get a house clearance company in. But having been brought up to value our possessions we simply couldn’t do it. Initially I thought eBay was our only option but then found out about Friday-ad and Gumtree. The latter was incredibly frustrating as, no matter what I did, it listed everything as being in Southampton, even though it was actually in Gosport, and many people understandably didn’t want to travel. Then you have to deal with the enquiries, some genuine, some timewasting. I’d listed one item for £55 and had an offer within a couple of hours for £20. Really? But almost worse was the stuff I was giving away. I listed some baking tins on Freecycle and

had so many enquiries that I felt guilty turning them all down. There were about 30 tins and I thought about splitting them up so two people could have them, before I came to my senses and realised this would just make more work for me. I wish there was a ‘middle ground’ where I could give stuff away in return for donations to charity (the Chandlers Ford charity shops had already had piles of stuff). So I’m down to a large mirror, two pictures, a Christmas tree and decorations, a collection of old records, a Denby dinner set and a very cluttered garage much to Kevin’s distress. Suggestions on the back of a postcard please, before Kevin starts up his own bonfire on the 5th November. Tania PS: More ideas for decluttering in The Art of Downsizing on Page 20.

DISCOVER MONTHLY FEATURE

November Bit of a nothing month, November. After all the flash-bangwallop of Guy Fawkes Night and the various other feasts of light and feasts of the dead at the beginning of the month, it all goes rather quiet until Christmas. November is the last month of autumn rather than the first month of winter, but while everything is dank and gloomy it isn’t necessarily all that cold. So it’s an in-between month, really, and neither fish nor fowl: just drab. The poet Thomas Hood (1789-1845) pretty much summed it up: No sun– no moon! No morn– no noon– No dawn– no dusk– no proper time of day. No warmth, no cheerfulness, no healthful ease. No comfortable feel in any member– No shade, no shine, no butterflies, no bees, No fruits, no flowers, no leaves, no birds– November! And believe it or not, Hood was best known in his day as a humourist. There are no bank holidays and no big national events except Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday, which – despite their importance - aren’t generally looked forward to. Even the really big-time saints have opted not to have their feast days in November, so instead we’re left with a long list of second-string saints. St Floribert, for instance. St Austremonius. St Papulus. St Acepsimas. November 7th is devoted to St Blinlivet, who sounds like a malt whisky; on November 8th we have St Wiomad, who sounds like a world music festival; while on November 9th it’s the turn of St Aedh MacBricc – probably Irish, I’d guess. November 13th is the feast day of St Homobonus, or “good bloke”, and November 20th belongs to St Benignus, or “nice guy”. No more than you’d expect from a saint, I suppose. Although these are by no means front-line saints, some of them are pretty interesting. St Richard Whiting, for instance, whose feast day is November 15th, was the last Abbot of Glastonbury, hanged on Glastonbury Tor in 1539 for refusing to hand over the abbey to Henry VIII. St Nerses the Great (November 19th) was an Armenian bishop who in 373 was in trouble with the king – King Pap, would you believe – for denouncing his licentious, lascivious, and generally lustful ways. Pap had him poisoned. And St Nikon (November 26th) was neither Japanese nor a photographer but was in fact another Armenian. An Orthodox monk,

Humourist and poet Thomas Hood, National Gallery

Nikon followed the Byzantine army which reconquered Crete from the Arabs. His job was to reconvert the Greek peasants who had lapsed from the church or converted to Islam. Finally, Saints Pinnock and Winoc. They were the same person: a Breton, or possibly Welsh, or possibly Cornish missionary in the late 7th-early 8th century who converted the heathen Flemish. He has a town named after him near Dunkirk (Bergues or Sint Winoksbergen) and two hamlets in Cornwall, St Pinnock and St Winnow. Anyway, an interesting bunch of saints, but not really a corrective to November’s gloom. And November really is gloomy: the UK’s average hours of sunlight falls from 101 in October (74 in Scotland) to a mere 65 (43 in Scotland) in November, and we all get Seasonal Affective Disorder. My answer to this perennial bout of the blues is to proclaim a festival of light for the modern age: National SAD Day, when we as a nation all exchange vouchers for sun-lamp treatment. This will expose us to a plentiful dose of the sunshine vitamin and make us all joyous and frisky despite the weather. It will probably be on November 31st. By Ted Bruning

The Life List How to read between the lines Everyone wants to be a writer these days, especially on the internet. But don’t be fooled by the advertising - things aren’t always what they seem. 1. Increase your portfolio. Yes, increase it with unpaid work, showing a prospective employer how much you love to write for free. 2. This project is just for fun. Just as long as your idea of fun is unpaid labour. 3. We hope to have a budget in a few months’ time. And I hope to regrow a full head of hair. Meanwhile, back on planet Earth... 4. This won’t take much of your time. Or much of our money. 5. I can only pay you in warm fuzzies. Unless I can re-sell them, earn interest on them or melt them on toast, I’ll pass. But I do have some cold realities for sale.

A Community First Responder is a person who attends a potentially life-threatening emergency. Community First Responders answer calls in their neighbourhood, so the potential for them to arrive on scene before an ambulance is vital in providing immediate life-saving treatment. These extra minutes do help to save lives. In case of cardiac arrest, for every minute that passes without cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and defibrillation, a patient's chances of survival decreases by 14%. They use life-saving skills, such as the use of the automated external defibrillator (AED), to provide early and often vital intervention for patients. Once an ambulance crew arrives at the scene, CFRs work alongside a clinically qualified practitioner. Community First Responders are trained by us to provide life-saving treatment at a recognised level and they are always backed up with the nearest available ambulance. Interested in becoming a CFR? Then telephone 0800 587 0207 or email cfr@scas.nhs.uk now

Churches' Christmas Message Christmas is a celebration of the birth of a baby. Any baby is special: any parents are proud. But any baby, however special, is a challenge to bring up for those parents. The baby celebrated at Christmas is Jesus, who is special because he is the son of God. And yet – he is a challenge to his parents! Born in extreme poverty in a strange town, Bethlehem, Jesus grows up to lead a band of disciples on a mission to reform the religion of the time. Such is his popularity with the masses and his disruption to the authorities, both civil and religious, he is put to death. But those very same disciples experience Jesus living again. They are emboldened to return to the very place of his death and confront the authorities once again with the good news of God’s love that Jesus preached. And all because of the birth of a baby at Christmas.

The Christian churches continue to be a movement of Jesus’ disciples, inspired by his story found in the Bible, of unlikely birth, compassionate teaching, sacrificial death and new life. We want to live the story each year so at Christmas, we open our hearts and sing ‘be born in us today’. As churches together, we want to invite you all to join us in the celebration of the birth of Jesus! For Christmas services in all the churches, please visit the Churches Together In Chandler’s Ford website www.ctcf.org.uk We wish you all God’s blessing this Christmas.

DISCOVER LIFE BEGINS

Life Begins The Art of Downsizing Neither my husband nor I were intentional hoarders. It just happened that our family house was blessed – some might say, cursed – with handy storage spaces. Built-in cupboards, understairs spaces, a loft, a shed and even a garage all served to quietly absorb our superfluous items. Like the chains worn by Marley’s ghost in Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol”, we felt the weight of our past lives bearing down upon us every time we opened a cupboard door. It was time to downsize. We started by selling some of the smaller items on Ebay. This popular online auction site takes a relatively low commission of 10% (although you should be prepared to pay some associated listing fees). All you need is a good camera and a willingness to painstakingly write up each item for sale. Once it’s up on the site, you can expect a nailbiting wait for the bids to come in. Often an item will remain unsold all week and then someone will bid in the last few seconds. As the payment zooms into your PayPal account, be ready to despatch your item. You’ll need to ensure it’s well packed and sent within the timeframe you’ve indicated if you want to keep that essential 100% positive feedback score. We found online auction sites were great for selling small objects that could be easily posted, but larger items, such as pieces of furniture, proved harder to shift. You can list your piece for ‘collection only’ but more than once I’ve had to re-list a piece of furniture after the successful bidder developed a case of cold feet. If you haven’t the patience for online auctions, car boot sales can provide a useful alternative providing you’re prepared to let your treasured

20

C A L L D I S CO V E R M AG A Z I N E S O N 02 3 8 02 7 6 3 61

possessions go for a fraction of their value. However, it’s not a good way to sell valuable jewellery, antiques or other high value items. When we wanted to sell a large, Georgian sideboard that had belonged to my mother, we took it to a local auction room. The idea of putting the piece in a live auction was exciting, but we were unprepared for the fees we would need to pay in addition to the auctioneer’s commission of 17.5%. We enjoyed the buzz of the auction and fortunately the piece exceeded its reserve, but the underlying costs – including transportation, photographic fee and VAT - made a significant dent in the ‘hammer price’ achieved. Live auction is still one of the best options for really valuable items, but you should think carefully about using this method to sell less expensive pieces. If, like us, you have odd bits of low value furniture to clear, you could contact a local dealer. You can save time by taking pictures along to the shop so the dealer can see exactly what you have to sell. The art of successful downsizing requires patience and ingenuity. Try to avoid employing a ‘one size fits all’ solution such as a house clearance service. It takes time to whittle down a lifetime of possessions, so it’s best to begin the process well before you put your house on the market. Of course, it’s sad to let go of the past, but it can also be liberating. We found it helped to take pictures of the things we really loved before sending them on their way. Tell yourself that you’ve enjoyed owning these items, but now it’s time to for them to become someone else’s treasured keepsake.

Is Solar Electricity Right for Me? For most homeowners, solar photovoltaics (PVs) are the most accessible form of renewable energy. They can be fitted easily to a building’s roof without significant disruption to the occupants inside and they quietly generate electricity whenever the sun shines. The Government-backed financial incentives available can also make them a very attractive investment. With the Government wanting to see one million PV installations by 2015, under their Feed-in Tariff scheme, more installations are urgently needed. Paul Coe, Regional Director of EnergyMyWay in Southampton, answers some of the most common PV questions: Are the Government incentives still available? Customers regularly tell me that they thought that the Government’s incentive scheme for photovoltaics was over. This isn’t the case. From 1 November, the Feed-in Tariff rate for domestic PV installations is 15.44P/unit of electricity you generate – regardless of whether you use the energy yourself or not. As well as the Feed-in Tariff, customers also benefit from savings on their electricity bills when they use the energy they generate, and receive an additional payment of 4.5p/unit for electricity that they export back to the national grid. For ease of administration, electricity companies will generally assume that you export half of the electricity you generate. When put together, these payments and savings can provide a rate of return on your investment of up to 12%. A return which is index-linked and tax free. Is My Roof Suitable? Another concern people have is whether their roof is suitable. Everyone knows a south facing roof is best, but good returns can also be achieved with east or west facing roofs. To install the largest domestic systems of 4kW, you need at least 17m2 of roof facing the sun, but viable systems are possible with an area of about 10m2 or above. In fact, we can use several roofs facing different directions – we recently installed a system with 5 panels facing east, 5 facing west and a further 5 facing south to achieve a 4kW system on one property in Southampton. Does My Home Qualify for the Payments? People have also heard that they need an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) at grade D or above, to access the best incentive payments. Those that have been in their property

since before 2007 probably don’t have one, so EnergyMyWay now offer a free EPC as part of our service. Grade D is the average energy performance of UK housing. If you are a little below this, adding solar will help you achieve the necessary level. If you are further behind, then we would recommend that customers implement other energy saving measures before they consider PV. Measures such as loft and cavity wall insulation are very cost effective and pay for themselves in just a few years. Talk to the Experts EnergyMyWay have been providing customers with independent renewable energy advice and installations since 2008. In a recent survey, 99.7% of our customers said they would recommend EnergyMyWay to their friends, colleagues and family. With energy prices set to rise above inflation, and solar PV offering a better return than most savings accounts on the typical £5,000£7,000 investment in an installation, there has never been a better time to invest in renewable energy. Contact EnergyMyWay on 023 8055 0981 to arrange a free survey.

Leaves Are you surrounded, engulfed and swamped with huge quantities of fallen leaves? The deluge that falls at this time of year is often enough to make even the most level headed, tree-loving gardener eye up a chainsaw.

So what can you do? Turn them in to gardeners’ gold: leafmould. If you want an environmentally friendly and very effective soil conditioner or mulching material, leafmould is the answer. If you have the space, make yourself a leafmould cage. Simply drive four treated softwood stakes into the ground, each stake marking out one corner of the ‘cage’. The stakes need to be about 1.5m (5ft) long so that they can be driven in really well, to a depth of 1-2ft, leaving 3-4ft above ground. Then attach some galvanized chicken wire to the stakes to create the sides of the cage and cram the cage full of leaves. If they aren’t moist, add a watering can of water to the heap of leaves, pouring some in after each six inches of leaves. You can also speed up the process by using a leafmould activator (available from garden centres, mail order catalogues and websites). Most deciduous leaves rot down well, especially oak and beech trees. Leaves from fruit trees, garden shrubs and climbers work well too. Try to avoid including too many twigs or evergreen leaves as these take much longer to rot, as do tough, leathery leaves such as those from sycamore, horse chestnut and plane. Most of us collect leaves using a spring-tined rake and although slower, it helps you avoid some materials more easily. A leaf sucker or a leaf blower is quicker but will often mean you end up with more twigs and stones. If your leaves are a wide-ranging assortment, then a good idea is to use the lawn mower – just mow the lawn with the leaves on it. The collection bag on the mower will then be full of

30

C A L L D I S CO V E R M AG A Z I N E S O N 02 3 8 02 7 6 3 61

a brilliant mix of chopped leaves and even the slower-to-rot-down types will rot speedily as they have been chopped up quite finely. Mixed with the lush, high-nitrogen grass clippings, the whole process is sped up. If space, time or money are short then you can also make leafmould in a bin liner or bin bag. Choose a good quality bin liner and cram it full of leaves, again adding water and/or activator if you wish. Then stab a few holes in the bag with a garden fork, loosely fold over the top of the bag and weigh it down with a brick. You should have a useable product in 12-18 months, but the longer you leave it the better. Leafmould will help to improve the moistureretaining capacity of a light, sandy soil and increase the aeration and drainage of a heavy clay soil. It also makes wonderful mulch that can be used on flower beds and borders, the vegetable plot, around trees and shrubs and on your fruit as well. It’s not often you get something for nothing, is it? So take advantage of all those leaves while you can. DIS COV ER SE A S ONAL

Burning Desire! Boom! A firework display erupts in a cascade of colour and noise, marking summer in a tourist town. Whoosh! A rocket arcs into the night sky to celebrate a birthday, wedding or special anniversary. Nowadays there is hardly a single event – summer or winter – that doesn’t merit a pyrotechnic show at the end, complete with its crowd of spectators providing the obligatory ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’. So why does November 5th still hold such a special place in our hearts? It’s a fairly safe bet to say that the original reason for Bonfire Night – to commemorate the gory end of Jacobean terrorist Guido Fawkes and his fellow plotters – isn’t really on our minds these days when we celebrate the date. November 5th is one of those important times when young and old can come together – despite the dark and the cold winter weather – to enjoy a shared experience complete with its own traditions. Central to that ritual is the bonfire itself. The attraction of fire is hard-wired into our DNA. Some historians speculate that the activities we associate with Bonfire Night are actually borrowed from much earlier, pagan traditions and the dates certainly seem to fit. The ancient Celtic festival of Samhain began on October 31st (co-incidentally our date for Halloween) and extended to the following day. At sunset on October 31st local villagers would assemble in order to build a giant bonfire, which then became the focal point of the event. The word ‘Samhain’ means “summer’s end” and communities came together both to thank the gods for the harvest and to help them face the long, dark months ahead. Ancient people also believed it was a time for contacting – and sometimes appeasing the spirits of dead ancestors who might lend a hand from the ‘other side’ to help the community through the challenges of winter.

36

C A L L D I S CO V E R M AG A Z I N E S O N 02 3 8 02 7 6 3 61

At the end of the celebration, each family would take a torch from the bonfire and bring it back to their home, where all fires had been deliberately extinguished the day before. These fires were then re-lit using the flame of the sacred bonfire: it was believed that if the fire went out, troubles would follow. This summer it has been interesting to observe a shadow of this practice in the rituals surrounding the Olympic torch – particularly the care that has been taken in preserving the flame throughout the national relays building up to the opening ceremony of the 2012 games. We consider that we belong to an enlightened and sophisticated society, so it is fascinating to observe the extraordinary pains taken by officials to ensure that the light originally sourced from the Temple of Hera at Olympia in Greece is not extinguished. Just as our ancient forefathers venerated the fire from the sacred Samhain bonfire, we treat the Olympic flame as a living being that must not be allowed to ‘die’ in case our hopes of success are extinguished with it. So next time you are standing round a November 5th bonfire – or even lying back in the bath, surrounded by a mass of flickering candles – you can reflect on our very human need to use fire as a bringer of hope and cheer. DIS COV ER LO C AL WALK

Testwood Walk Walk Distance 4.6 miles Historical Notes The 150 acre Testwood Lakes site was formed by gravel extraction in the 1980’s and 90’s. It now forms a working reservoir for water supplies to parts of Southampton, Totton and the Isle of Wight. The site is managed as a Nature Reserve. During gravel extraction, part of a Bronze Age boat was found dating from around 1500BC.

From the A326 Ower to Totton road, turn left on the roundabout into the Calmore Industrial Estate. Follow the road through the estate and soon after it bears right, look for a concrete drive on the left signed as ‘Testwood Lakes Nature Reserve’. Turn left into the reserve and follow the road around to a gravel car park.

From the car park, bear right along a gravel track following the edge of Testwood Lake.

At a ‘T’ junction of paths, turn left to walk between the two lakes.

At a fork in the path, turn left and go through a kissing gate to follow the left hand lakeside.

At a fork in the path, bear right to leave the lake and go through a kissing gate. Cross over the bridge.

Ignore the stile on the right, keep straight ahead along a narrow path with wire fences either side.

As the path opens out to a track, turn right across a stile to enter a meadow. Follow the grass path diagonally right through the field following the red topped marker posts. Cross a stile and the bridge to cross the river once more.

Keep straight ahead through woodland to reach a road through the industrial estate.

Cross the road onto the pavement opposite and turn left. Walk to the end of the road ignoring the turning into Sunset Business Park.

Go past a metal gate. A few yards further on is a second gate into Test Valley Angling Club’s fishing lake. Turn right onto the footpath entering woodland then turn immediately left.

Walk a short distance through the woods then pass a wooden barrier to emerge into a field. Walk across the field keeping the boundary fence to your right.

At the end of the fence, Testwood School Playing Field is diagonally right. Turn left along the fence line, this time keeping the fence to your left.

The path meanders through scrub land to a kissing gate. Go through the gate onto a track and turn left.

Go past a metal gate to follow the track right then left past a brick tower.

Cross the bridges over the mill race and river then turn left through a kissing gate ...Continued on page 54

'You are not alone' - The Benefits of Getting Legal Advice Over the past few years, I have noticed a dramatic increase in the number of women who have agreed to their ex-husbands’ terms for divorce to keep things amicable and straightforward, have since felt what the court ordered is unfair and then come to ask me what I can do to have it changed. However much I wish it weren’t, the answer is always the same - ‘absolutely nothing’. Only in the most exceptional circumstances can a solicitor such as myself make the case for the terms of a divorce that has been agreed by the Court to be changed in retrospect. Perhaps their former husbands had the stronger personality, perhaps it was felt they had all the power from earning and controlling the money, but so many women reach agreements to get situations over with in the short-term, and then live to regret it. Of course it isn’t just men. Many women have been able to make demands on ex-husbands using access and custody to children as a negotiating tactic if things got difficult or nasty, and men have agreed to conditions in their divorce they later wish they hadn’t. I would be foolish to ignore one of the main motivations of agreements of this kind between couples is to avoid involving people such as myself, but I honestly don’t know why this is the case. The fact that people would rather trust people they wish to divorce than experienced professionals whose job it is to look out for their best interests, is a fact that causes me a great deal of both confusion and frustration.

Our job as solicitors is to ensure that the individuals in our care are treated fairly and walk away from a relationship as well looked after as possible. That’s it. That’s what we do. Now that Legal Aid is being withdrawn from all cases other than those involving domestic violence and child custody, I am worried that more couples will seek to ‘save money’ by entering into agreements that later turn out to be onesided and unfair to one of the parties. I can say that hiring a lawyer is an investment in your future, I can say that we are here to protect people and guide them through the process, but I suppose people only really believe me when they are in a situation that cannot be reversed and, by then, it is too late. If agreements are made between a couple informally, then a solicitor can get involved to negotiate a change in terms and make them official, but once the Court has made its Order, that is it. Absolutely final. Game over. I do hope that people reading this article now understand that without professional advice, the desire to keep things amicable between couples can lead to the possibility of one side being manipulated and taken advantage of. by Catherine Maxfield

Ugot Ltd – Moving with the Times Despite what you hear in the daily news, not every business is experiencing a downturn, and Chandlers Ford business Ugot Ltd is definitely bucking the trend. Ugot is a Home cinema, multi-room audio & video and home control specialist. Bryan Vint and his team offer a comprehensive service from straightforward sales to complete installation and support. Ugot Ltd has been part of Chandlers Ford for nearly seven years has been lucky enough to grow year on year. This year particularly has seen even more interest in their solutions both from within the local community and from the wider area which has enabled them to move into new offices in the centre of Chandlers Ford.

Something for everybody

Their clients range from those simply looking to upgrade a TV or their sound system to those

58

C A L L D I S CO V E R M AG A Z I N E S O N 02 3 8 02 7 6 3 61

who are building or renovating their home and want to include new entertainment or control technology.

Home cinema we all know about, but what is multi-room audio & video?

Multi-room means you keep all your audio and video equipment in one central location (e.g. study / cupboard) but it is accessible and controllable from many or all of the rooms in your home. This means your music and your Sky or Virgin box are hidden away but easily controlled through, for example, your iPad or a remote control or even an on wall touch screen. The benefits are many and include fewer trailing cables and less visible clutter and better sound. If you are looking for anything related to home entertainment or home control, perhaps an upgrade in time for Christmas then call Ugot Ltd on 023 8025 3399 or you can find our more by visiting either: www.ugot.co.uk or www.ugotmultiroom.co.uk.

Times are tough? It could be good news Shortly after taking office as Chancellor of the Exchequer, Gordon Brown said that he intended to free Britain from the cycle of ‘boom and bust’. What a vote winning proposition; most of us would be willing to forgo a boom if it meant the economy was on a bit more of a level and our current lifestyle was assured. 10 years later during his short tenure as Prime Minister he was eating his words. The economy was sliding towards a recession and the downturn was worse than in the Conservative days. All economies are prone to boom and bust and whilst not totally understood, there is one major factor that is acknowledged and it’s this: Our economy exists because there are human beings buying, selling and using, and we are emotional creatures. We can swing very quickly from optimism to pessimism, spendthrift to miser and vice versa. So a government could implement even a small economic tweak e.g. an interest rate rise, with the aim of slowly deflating the balloon rather than popping it, and the markets and the general public can react to an unanticipated degree – either negatively or positively. The press, full of articles written by humans, loves to do a bit of doom mongering and can influence our behaviour. Some say that human experience is also an important factor. Say ten years ago you were 30 and borrowed money on credit cards and from banks. At 40 you are still struggling to repay that debt having seen a downturn in your income. In 10 years more if your income returned to the same relative level as when you were 30, there’s just no way you’ll take out big borrowings again. Give it 30 years more though, and a new generation won’t have that previous experience to learn from and a new boom will go off. Throw in a few unpredicted events too e.g. 9/11,

66

C A L L D I S CO V E R M AG A Z I N E S O N 02 3 8 02 7 6 3 61

and all economies struggle to stabilise. Clearly we are not in a boom at the moment. But it’s been a few years since the economy first went into recession and few years more than that when growth started to slow. Whilst nobody would be brave enough to predict that we are at or near the bottom of the curve yet, you could say we are nearer to going back up than we were a while back. What a recession does do though is to consolidate. Those that run a good business (selling something people want, offering a good service, and having efficient processes and systems) will survive, while their competitors will be forced out. This in turn reduces the competition in the market, meaning what business is around has fewer people going after it. The point being: make sure you tick all the boxes. Undoubtedly though it’s a tougher market out there so keeping your eye on growing – or at least maintaining - your business is essential. For example, if you are a small business, how often do you email people you’ve done business with before? They are far more likely to buy than a brand new cold prospect because they know you and they trust you. But they might have forgotten about you and it’s your job to remind them.

Life’s Not Fair and sometimes that’s a good thing... I read a story in the Daily Mail yesterday. Now, this could be an article on why reading the Daily Mail is something you should never do, but we don’t have six billion years to kill. Instead I’d like to talk to you about my industry, the music industry, and the fact that people like to complain about it being ‘unfair’. The Daily Mail journalist had been granted exclusive access to this year’s X Factor auditions - like a high-waisted Willy Wonka, Simon Cowell had finally opened up the wrought-iron gates of his Popstar Factory (although of course in this case he was the only creepy orange midget in sight). The journalist described watching the many thousands of wide-eyed hopefuls being herded like cattle into a massive aircraft hangar where they were prodded unceremoniously into anonymous audition pods to perform for invisible TV producer underlings only to be mostly rejected outright, some after waiting twelve hours for their moment. Only those who were extremely good-looking or plain mental made it through. Know what I think of that? Big bloody whoop. I mean, heaven forfend you should have to spend slightly longer than an average working day queuing up for your chance to hop nimbly into literally the most coveted career on the planet. Your feet hurt? Deal with it. I know doctors who work 36 hours straight sewing people’s legs back on with barely a break for a sandwich, and they don’t expect a medal for it. And yes, I know that should you make it through the demoralising selection process the odds of actually striking gold on the other side are still eye-wateringly small, but hey, if you don’t like small odds, you need to get out of the music industry. Something else that hacks me off about these people is that they act as if Going On A Talent

“The Lightyears at Wembley Stadium... lucky fellas. Mind you, you should have been there the time they accidentally headlined that crèche.”

Show is the only way in which you can ‘be a singer’. Well, if you’re stuck for ideas, here’s one go out and sing. That’s all you have to do. Go out and sing, and keep on singing because you love it and because it’s brilliant, not because it means you might one day meet Kim Kardashian. For the love of Moses, you don’t have to be standing in front of Cheryl Cole and a bloated crowd of WKD-fuelled imbeciles baying for either your blood or the inevitable appearance of a buttonnosed orphan with the voice of angel in order to be a musician. We live in a gloriously connected digital world where it’s never been easier to create and perform music, so next time you’re standing in front of the mirror with a hairbrush complaining that Cowell hasn’t turned you into the new Leona yet, question whether you really want it, or whether all you actually want is to be pictured in Hello magazine sitting on a throne kissing a poodle. A young musician recently asked me how my band played Wembley Stadium, and I replied: ‘Go home, pick up your guitar, work hard for ten years and maybe you’ll get lucky’. I didn’t mean it to be cynical; quite the opposite in fact. It’s an insane lottery, is music, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Chris plays piano in South London power-pop band The Lightyears. The Lightyears, voted the UK’s BEST POP/ROCK ACT at the Indy Awards, have played Wembley Stadium, toured across four continents and released a record with Sting’s producer. Chris has recently completed his first novel, “Mockstars”; a selection of extracts from the book are available to view at www.ProjectLightyears.com. by Chris Russell

Chevrolet

Cruze SW Model: Chevy Cruze SW LTZ

0-60mph: 10.4s

Price: £19,785 (as tested)

MPG (Comb’d): 62.8

Engine: 1.7-litre, diesel

Emissions: 119g/km

Power: 128bhp

Residual Values (three years): TBC

Max speed:124mph

Chevy has sold more than 1.3 million Cruzes worldwide - now they’ve added an estate model to the range.

£19,785 for the 1.7-litre LTZ Nav model. This is very reasonably priced and boasts alloy wheels, climate control, sat nav, cruise control and rear parking sensors.

What is it? This is the Cruze that dealers have been waiting for. Last year Chevy dealers received the much needed five-door hatch, but they have been unable to provide a competitive offering in the popular C-segment estate sector - until now. It’s practical with 1,478 litres of boot space with the seats down, and it also brings in a facelift for the Cruze range, new technology and the death knell for the Cruze four-door saloon - it’s been discontinued.

What’s it like to drive? When it comes to the test drive, we would advise customers to try different versions. Why? Petrol versions are soft, wallowy and aren’t involving to drive. However, the 1.7-litre diesel version – thanks to more weight over the front wheels – is far more pleasurable to drive. The six-speed auto (1.8-litre LT) is not the best.

What’s under the bonnet? Quite simply the choice is limited to two petrols and a diesel. The petrols come in the flavour of a 128bhp 1.6 and a 139bhp 1.8. The majority of buyers will opt for the 128bhp 1.7-litre diesel as it’s the best all-rounder. We also tried a 1.4-litre petrol and 2.0-litre diesel at launch, but there are no current plans to introduce these to the UK yet. What’s the spec like? Just like the five-door hatchback, Chevrolet is generous with the list of standard equipment. The range kicks off at £15,375 for the 1.6-litre LS which comes with air con, MP3 connectivity and electric mirrors and prices top out at

What do the press think of it? The Independent said: ‘Most parts of the world like it and buy it in big numbers. Now that the Station Wagon has arrived, more UK buyers can be expected to join in.’ Auto Express, however, concluded: ‘The Cruze SW makes plenty of sense as a family choice, thanks to its spacious, clever boot and refined, comfortable drive, but the Ford Focus estate is sharper and much more fun to drive.’ What do we think of it? We’ve never been huge fans of the Cruze range, deeming it to be the Astra’s poorer cousin and not that attractive. But the SW changes that – yes, a Focus may be more fun to drive, but few rivals match the SW’s package of attractive styling and great value for money. The Cruze is no longer a left-field choice. by James Baggott, editor of Car Dealer Magazine (CarDealerMag.co.uk)

DISCOVER SHORT STORY

Short Story Mouse Town

by Jackie Brewster

Colette phoned Dinah for an autopsy on the break-up. “Chris said it wasn’t working”. “Men!” Colette declared with all the indignation of her 17 years. “Don’t suppose you’ll be going to the fair tonight then?” “No, I’m not really in the mood”. As Dinah hung up, the doorbell rang. Martin stood in the porch, grinning. “My Mum said you needed a chaperone, so here I am”. Dinah pulled on her coat, “I’ve just told Colette I wasn’t going”. “Because you know she thinks I’m a boring geek not to be seen dead with?” Dinah laughed. “How did you guess?” “Call it a man’s intuition”. Dinah and Martin had grown up together; she was used to his odd ways. “If it’s any consolation”, Martin ventured, “I thought you were too good for him”. She rolled her eyes. “Let’s just go”. The evening was crisp as they walked towards town. Family groups with weary children drifted past them, clutching cuddly toys and bags of candy floss. Once they reached the market square they were engulfed in a fog of diesel fumes and frying onions. Carousel horses cantered within inches of shop windows, music thumped from every stall, and above it all hung a Ferris wheel. Martin grabbed her elbow and shouted, “Which of the health and safety infringements should we tackle first?” They staggered from the Waltzers onto the Meteor, followed by the Kamikaze. Dinah laughed helplessly; the fair was spinning her cares away. Soon she was feeling queasy. “Let’s do something gentle”, she said. “I’m rubbish at hook a duck and I have a note from my Mum to excuse me from the ghost train”, Martin said. She giggled. Colette was wrong - Martin wasn’t boring, he was funny. She pointed at a side-show squeezed behind the chemist. “Mouse Town. What’s that?” They slipped through a curtain into a sawdust strewn room. Behind a wooden barrier was a model of a town with streets, houses, a church and even its own fairground. And all the villagers were represented by live mice.

“It stinks”, Dinah said. “Can they escape?” “No”, Martin smiled. “They don’t even know there is a world outside. Look at them - running about, wrapped up in their own little lives”. They moved slowly round the barrier until once more emerging through a curtain into the fairground. They walked towards the dodgems and spotted Chris and Colette at the back of the queue. Chris’s arm was draped casually over Colette’s shoulder. Hurt and angry Dinah strode towards them. Martin grabbed her arm. “No”, Martin pulled her away. “Let it go”. He steered her up the ramp towards the Big Wheel. Numbly she climbed into a cradle. “How could she do this to me? She’s supposed to be my best friend”, Dinah sobbed. The wheel began to turn and Martin patted his pockets helplessly for a tissue. The cradle rose until they were right at the top. “Look below Dinah”, Martin said, “It’s just like Mouse Town. They’re all scurrying about, not caring what they do or who they hurt”. Dinah looked down. She saw swarms of people. The rides now seemed tiny. Even the music was quieter from up here. “Now, look up”, Martin whispered. Above she saw a dome of twinkling stars. “Only we can see that”. She looked at Martin and saw his kind face, his worried smile. She saw something else there, something wonderful. She couldn’t believe she’d never noticed it before. She offered him her hand. Calmly and graciously he took it in his.

News from

Chandlers Ford and Winchester MP Steve Brine

If I listen carefully I can probably hear you groan when I say that Chandler’s Ford could be moving into yet another new constituency at the next General Election. As you may have heard, the Boundary Commission for England is currently drawing up plans to reduce the size of the House of Commons. This is primarily to equalise the size of all parliamentary constituencies, to ensure each vote has the same weight, and to save the taxpayer money. This requires a re-drawing of all constituencies, including here in Hampshire. Draft proposals, which are out to consultation until December 10th, propose moving the four wards of Chandler’s Ford and Hiltingbury back into the Romsey constituency. If you have a view, you can have your say via the Boundary Commission for England website. For me however, it is business as usual and I have been really busy in Chandler’s Ford lately. My regular surgery continues, I have held a very successful street surgery at the Fryern Arcade as part of my Summer Tour and I held a lively ‘Ask Steve’ session last month at the Dovetail Centre on Winchester Road. Popcorn (the Labrador and I) are attended a very wet Hiltingbury Extravaganza last month at The Hilt. After a break in 2011, we had high hopes for a bumper year to raise some serious cash for good local causes but the weather had other ideas. I just want to say an enormous well done to the Cllr Mike Hughes and all the organisers for responding so well on the day and to all the team for making the event, albeit a bit cramped inside The Hilt, fun and carrying on regardless. October has been Breast Cancer Awareness Month and many of you will know of my work in this area in Parliament as Chair of the All-Party Group. The

exciting news in front of us is that I have secured a meeting in No.10 with the Prime Minister this month at which we will be joined by the three big breast cancer charities in this country. Our focus will be on screening and importance of moving to fully digital screening for women, not just in Hampshire but across England. Look out for more on this on my website or in the local press. Finally, it was a pleasure recently to open the new Yellow Dot Nursery on the boundary between Otterbourne and Chandler’s Ford. My wife Susie and (on his first every official engagement with Dad) little William joined me to cut the ribbon at this absolutely first-class new facility in the parish. I wish Jane and her team every success for the future. If you would like to get in touch on any issue you feel strongly about or need to attend my Chandler’s Ford surgery, please don't hesitate to get in touch via steve. brine.mp@parliament.uk. There is also a huge amount of information about my work locally and in Westminster at www. stevebrine.com.

THE CHANDLERS FORD DIRECTORY LOCAL NEWS & VIEWS

Pickled Newts Investment Club An investment club consists of a group of individuals who meet on a regular basis for the purpose of pooling money and investing in the stock market. They enable members to learn about markets, and exchange ideas with each other. Chandler’s Ford has its own Investment Club, it’s called the Pickled Newts Investment Club (so named after the venue of their early meetings –now the Mitre Portswood). Currently they meet at the Chandler’s Ford Central Club on the first Monday of every month. The club follows an agenda taking in discussion

on the performance of the club’s shares, sales/ purchases, and any shares to be considered for future purchases. There is a stop loss system in place to avoid heavy losses and to lock into any profit. Current membership is eleven and these clubs are normally limited to a maximum of twenty, thus at present there are a possible nine vacancies. The club welcomes new members of all levels of experience from complete novice to life long investor. We also stage social events during the year. New members are required to make an initial contribution of £100. Thereafter all members contribute a monthly direct debit of £25 (or multiples thereof). This money will be invested in shares – hopefully profitably. Any member wishing to resign from the club may withdraw their stake at any time subject to a small brokerage charge. Although results cannot be guaranteed every member is in profit, some would put this down to the benefits of collective decision making. Anyone interested should contact the Chairman Frank Newbery Email franknewbery@ btinternet.com . He would be pleased to arrange a visit so that you could learn more about the club.
