Hello and Welcome Well, the last flickers of the Indian summer have finally faded, and bright October days can be chilly, so it’s time to put the shorts and sandals away for a few months and dig out the winter clothes. Shouldn’t need to buy anything new: I have plenty of stuff left over from previous years. Which is handy as times are tight, and the more I waste on clothes means the less is available to waste on wine. Anyway, who needs to spend a fortune on a new wardrobe every season? Reviewing the clothes I was wearing last season however, shows some to be looking, well, rather ‘last season’. I’m no slave to fashion, but having bought on impulse because that coat was in the sale, now proves to be a costly error. It was in the sale because by winter 2012 it looks slightly ridiculous rather than cutting edge trendy. So that’s a new coat then. Trousers then, I can’t go wrong there. Well, how I gloated when by the end of the summer I had actually managed to shift a few surplus pounds. Pride comes before a fall though, and
falling is exactly what my trousers are doing now. A quick check of the basics…gloves: only one matching pair, but gardening gloves don’t really count do they. Hats? The cat didn’t sit on the mat, it sat on the hat. Eugh. Shoes - surely there’s some reuse there? Yes! Not letting in water yet and a little tatty but some polish will fix that. But then my 17 year old daughter says “I don’t mean to be rude, but you’re not wearing those out are you?” (Why does she always say that - rude is exactly what she meant to be). Hang on – that’s new gloves, hat, coat, trousers and shoes. This October’s clothes-shop is beginning to look expensive. Think I’ll stay indoors until the January sales... Tania

Seasonal Recipe Try this variation on summer pudding making the most of the early Autumn fruits, such as plums, blackberries and delicious English apples. Serve with softly whipped double cream flavoured with a splash of Calvados for a really indulgent dessert. Place the sugar and 200ml of cold water in a large pan and heat gently until the sugar has dissolved. Add the sliced apples and simmer for 5-10 minutes until just tender. Add the rest of the fruit and simmer for a further 2-3 minutes. Leave to cool. Remove the crusts from the bread slices. Use a round cookie cutter to stamp out a circle from one slice of bread to fit the base of a 1.2 litre pudding basin. Cut the remaining slices of bread in half. Carefully strain half of the fruit syrup from the cooled fruit into a shallow dish. Lightly dip most of the slices of bread into the syrup and arrange around the side of the pudding basin, overlapping them slightly to completely line the basin. Dip the bread circle into the syrup and press into the bottom of the basin. Spoon the fruit into the lined basin, pressing down gently with the back of a spoon. Use the remaining slices of bread to cover the fruit filling completely and spoon over any remaining syrup. Place a saucer on top of the basin and weigh it down with 2-3 food cans. Chill in the fridge overnight. To serve, carefully turn the pudding out onto a plate and decorate with extra sliced fruit.
Autumn Pudding • 175g caster sugar • 3 small English eating apples, peeled, cored and sliced • 4 red plums, halved, stones removed and sliced • 100g raspberries • 100g strawberries, hulled and sliced • 100g blackcurrants or blueberries • 100g blackberries • 10 slices thick-sliced white bread • Extra fruit, to decorate
Serves 6 Ready in 1 hour (plus overnight chilling)

A big slice of support from leukaemia patient & husband In 2002, Gill Adkins, 53 found that the glands in her neck were swollen and showing no signs of going down. After a visit to her GP she was tested and found to have leukaemia cells. After many difficult years of treatment, recurrences and remissions, Gill, in April this year underwent a Bone Marrow Transplant in Southampton Hospital. Living in Christchurch, she will have to make regular return visits to the hospital, twice a week for check-ups.
Gill and Ray with their £1,000 cake!
Southampton Hospital Charity’s Red & White Appeal aims to raise £1.76million to create a dedicated day treatment unit for patients like Gill. When Gill and husband Ray found out about the Red & White Appeal they were keen to help, having experienced first-hand the need for a new treatment area to enhance patient care. Husband Ray said, “We found out that ward sister Yvonne Lo and the team regularly sell homemade cakes and biscuits to raise money for the appeal and decided to make a bid for a particularly tasty cake.” Reflecting on her treatment so far, Gill said, “I will be eternally grateful for the help, encouragement and high level of professional treatment that I’ve received from all of the team at Southampton. Our donation is just a small token of our appreciation. I just really like home-made cakes!”
To find out more or to make a donation to the Red & White Appeal please call 023 8079 8881 or visit www.redandwhiteappeal.org
Would you sponsor me for £1? It’s nearly 10 years since I ran 10 miles but I couldn’t turn down the opportunity to help raise the remaining £300,000 of Southampton Hospital’s Red & White Appeal by running the Great South Run in October. I work with Tania on Discover Magazines and I live in Chandlers Ford myself. If every house that gets a copy this month donates just £1, I’d rase £6,250! Wouldn’t that be Just finished! After a half marathon in 2004 fantastic? Please help and visit http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/DiscoverSouthampton and make a small donation to this worthy cause. Thank you. DISCOVER SHORT STORY
Short Story What’s In A Name? Wally put his tools away in the van and then went back into the house to collect the bag of off-cuts and rubbish. Some carpet fitters would have left it for the householder to deal with, but that was not his way. The lady paid him by cheque for the work, saying how pleased she was with the fine job he had done. As he climbed back into his van, it once again crossed his mind that tomorrow was his 65th birthday and the day on which he would be retiring. Thank goodness he had organised a pension all those years ago. He and Mary would be reasonably well provided for and should never be broke. All the way home, a journey of just under half an hour, thoughts of his long and active working life filled his mind. He remembered that he had first watched a carpet being fitted when he was only ten years old and had marvelled at what he saw. He was totally enthralled and decided there and then to take up that profession when he left school. Having achieved only average grades at school, he was extremely pleased to secure a job with a carpet company at the age of 16 in a local firm. Starting as a general assistant, within a few years Wally had graduated to being a fully-fledged fitter. He had stayed with that outfit for just four more years before starting his own one man company. He had always thoroughly enjoyed the job; the process of first cutting and fixing the edging strips, fitting the underlay and finally putting down the carpet itself, stretching and trimming it to be a perfect fit. The sense of achievement when he stood back and eyed up a finished job had never
16

left him. Astounding! Arriving home, he completely unloaded the van, all his tools and everything to do with the carpet business, and put them away in the garden shed. The empty van reversed into the garage and the offcuts he’d collected earlier were put to one side to taken to the dump in due course. “Don’t suppose I’ll ever need you again, old dear. Wonder if I can sell you and make a few quid”, Wally said aloud as he patted the bonnet of his old red Ford Transit. He went indoors, exchanged greetings and had a cuddle with his wife Mary, who put the kettle on to make a cup of tea. While she was doing that, he changed out of his work clothes for what he sincerely hoped was the very last time. OK, it was not unlikely that he might do some fitting for friends now and again, but not for a living. When the tea was made he sat down in the kitchen to drink it. He patted Mary’s hand and asked, “are we all packed then, sweetheart?” She, with a mouthful of tea and biscuits, merely nodded and smiled. They would be taking a long flight to South Africa in a couple of days to visit their son and his family. It would be their first flight anywhere and they were both a bit apprehensive. He breathed out, sat back, relaxed and, as he did so, reflected for the umpteenth time that his parents may well have been under some psychic influence when he was born. Perhaps they’d predicted what he would do with his life when, at the age of eight months, they had had him christened in the local church and thus he had become, would you believe, Walter Wall! by Eric Godley

DISCOVER LOCAL NEWS
Suited and Booted Otterbourne resident Duncan Holley, has been collecting memorabilia and photos of Southampton FC for 40 odd years. This has been done by going to post-card fairs, internet, agencies etc - all the usual places - but also spending many hours driving around the country visiting old players and their families to beg, steal or borrow their photographs or take photos of their medals and caps. The club gave him official historian status in 1998 which was a great help when resourcing these photos and the club's history but still, sometimes he had to pay up to £300 to acquire an image. As the club's post war history had already been comprehensively covered by Duncan’s previous book "In that Number" in 2003, he thought it was time to do something for the pre-war period and so he has released “Suited and Booted”. Because the history was comparatively ancient (no one alive who remembers it) he had to include a potted abridged script to accompany the photos, but he realised it would be the photos that would make the book attractive as you can see above. Most of us are fascinated to see images from so many years ago whether football related or not. Every single man in the crowd (it would be easier to find the eponymous character in Where’s Wally, than to spot a woman in this crowd) is wearing a white shirt, a tie, a jacket and a hat. Many are smoking cigarettes or pipes. And it’s unlikely that any of them are still alive today. But of course it’s the history of the club itself that makes this beautifully illustrated and designed book a must-have for Southampton supporters, especially with the team’s higher

Mitsubishi Outlander 2012 Price: £24,995 (est) Engine: 2.2-litre, diesel Power: 148bhp, 380Nm Max speed: 125mph (est) 0-60mph: 9.7 (est)
Emissions: 145g/ km (est) Availability: On sale November Rating: *** (3)
Efficiency: 50.4mpg (est) New car launches take place pretty frequently. Audi, for example, has delivered no less than 21 new models into showrooms since 2010. In those same two years, niche Japanese manufacturer Mitsubishi has launched absolutely nothing. That’s why, as car launches go, this new Outlander is a pretty big deal. So has the wait been worth it? Well, in short, yes. No longer a partnership with Peugeot Citroen (who sold versions of the predecessor), the new Outlander is described by Mitsubishi as an ‘engineer’s car’. What it means is efficiency, space and refinement were all high on the agenda – looks, however, appear to have slipped off it. In fact, it’s worth dealing with our main complaint now. If there’s one thing that lets the new Outlander down, it’s the conservative styling. At a time when design is at the forefront of our lives, the Mitsubishi will be hard pressed to stand out in a class bristling with good-looking alternatives. However, the new model does make a strong case for itself. Let’s start under the bonnet. In the UK, we’ll only get a 2.2-litre diesel engine and a fourwheel drive powertrain. Mitsubishi has worked hard on the unit’s green credentials. We drove a pre-production model, but by the time the car is launched in November, the maker hopes it will produce under 145g/km (down from 165g/km) and return more than 50mpg. The 148bhp engine doesn’t lack grunt either. With 380Nm of torque it pulled strongly on the German Autobahns and twisty mountain roads that made up our test route. The 2.2-litre is likely to be good for 125mph and will crack the
24

benchmark 60mph sprint in under 10 seconds. What’s really impressive though is the refinement. Inside, the engine is barely audible, while wind and tyre noise are kept to a minimum too. If we were to be picky, we did find the steering a little numb at the dead ahead, but the manual six speed gearbox was direct and pleasant to use. There was also a noticeable lack of body roll for a 4x4 in corners. New technology, for Mitsubishi at least, will also make a debut on the Outlander. There’s a lane departure warning system, adaptive cruise control and a low-speed anti-collision system which will apply the brakes for drivers if it thinks you’re about to hit the car in front – at a roundabout, for example. What will come as standard is yet to be finalised, but expect the lot on the top-of-the-range model. There’s also a new multimedia system with sat nav, which is far easier to use than before and an electronic tailgate. But by far the biggest selling point for the Outlander is the two very-usable extra seats in the boot floor. They can be extended in seconds and fold away completely flat. They’re perfect for parents who sometimes need an extra set of chairs for the school run. Mitsubishi aims to sell 4,000 Outlanders a year in the UK at slightly more than the current model (around £25,000). We think that could be a tough ask with this sole offering. However, when the plug-in hybrid version arrives next year offering real world economy of 140mpg, it could be a very different story indeed. by James Baggott, editor of Car Dealer Magazine (CarDealerMag.co.uk)

You never know what you might find Chandlers Ford resident Don Crossley tells us of a very interesting experience buying some books at an auction. “A couple of winters ago I went to an auction and made a bid for some cricket books, which included a set of 17 Wisdens. By the time the sporting material came up for auction there were just 11 people present. I felt reasonably confident in being successful when the lot came up, as only two of us were interested. Within a minute or two, it was left for me to make the final offer, when my challenger 'dropped out' at £20. Just as the auctioneer was about to say, for the third and final time...up came an enthusiast from the internet, who stayed with me until the figure reached £60, whereupon I became the final bidder. At home when I was unpacking I picked up the final book from the carton and noticed that it was spoiled as the previous owner had pasted together the majority of pages. After I had prized open the book I found that a hole had been crudely cut through about a third of the pages. But in the hole I found five pieces of gold and inscribed on them were references to the Canadian Armed Forces fighting in the Mediterranean during WW2 and with further inspection, I came across references to Crete, Greece and the words Commander in Chief Southern Forces. So off I went on the Monday to Bonhams in Winchester, where I was given an initial opinion of "It's just basic, not much”. But I left

the pieces for the estimator to assess and the following day he phoned tell me the pieces were worth between £1400 and £1500. The estimate was spot on and they went for £1400 last June. When I recalled the find to a friend, he suggested I checked the remaining hardback wisdens, to seek whether further gold had been hidden but sadly, I have to state no; my luck had run out! Braishfield Walk
Walk Distance 4.5 miles Historical Notes Settlement at Braishfield goes back to at least the stone-age, remains of a hut being discovered at Broom Hill just to the north east of the village. The remains of a Roman Villa have been discovered close by. The ‘Monarch’s Way is a 615 mile walking trail following the supposed route of King Charles’ II escape from Oliver Cromwell after his defeat at the battle of Worcester in 1651. The church of All Saints was built in 1855. •

Braishfield is most easily reached from the A3090 Romsey to Ampfield road. On entering the village from the south, drive past the Wheatsheaf Pub and park in the village hall car park (Post Code SO51 0PN) located just past just past the recreational ground on the right. Note that this walk can be muddy. Leave the car park and turn left down the pavement towards the pub. Cross Common Hill Road and turn left into the pub car park. Walk through the car park to the right hand corner at the rear of the building. Go through the kissing gate into a field and turn right along the field boundary. Cross a stile into a second field and continue along the right hand boundary. At the far end of the field, turn left for thirty yards and cross another stile into a field. Head slightly diagonally left to a visible stile in the field boundary. Cross the stile and the small footbridge beyond. Follow the footpath left and emerge into a large field. Turn right along the boundary line towards woodland. Walk uphill and cross the stile in the corner of the field. Go through the wooden kissing gate into the woodland. After just a few yards, turn left along the signed bridleway into woodland. Go through a wooden double gate and follow the bridleway along the left hand fence-line. Go through a wooden gate to emerge onto a lane. Turn left along the road. Follow the lane back to Braishfield. Ignore the turning on the right, follow the lane round to the left. On entering the village, turn right into the recreational ground adjacent to the last house on the right. Walk across the grounds to the village hall opposite and your car.
Thanks to local resident Mrs J Brace for this walk. We were pleased to donate to her requested charity for this feature. If you have anything you’d like to contribute you could raise money for your charity of choice too. Send to tania@discovermagazines.co.uk.

D I S C O V E R THE BET TER L I F E
The Better Life
(Like The Good Life but with the internet)
Man V Slug The late poet Dorothy Frances Gurney wrote that: One is nearer God’s Heart in a garden than anywhere else on Earth. That may be true, but preparing the garden, for growing vegetables, is its own special form of purgatory. Nature conspires to make the task as difficult as possible, so we took it in stages. Step One – Peat-less pots are go. We chose green bean and mange tout seeds, and filled the little pots from our compost bin. I soon discovered that it’s a fine line between moist and soggy. And that the ‘which plant comes up first’ sweepstake may be subject to tampering. Anne knows who I mean, so we’ll say no more... Step Two - Mark out the plot, somewhere beyond the cypress tree’s reach to allow for the possibility of direct sunlight. That’s the easy part - it makes you feel like you’re retracing the first, tentative steps of our hunter-gatherer ancestors when they realised that a little porridge might be nice for a change. Step Three - Dig for Pyrrhic victory, trusting that the veg will subsequently be worthy of your muscles’ sacrifice. Once the soil has been dug, it’s time to remove the grass and weeds. The chickens loved some of the grass, but the worms received a reprieve, as they were on active service. Step Four - A ginger beer and a bag of crisps for me. Then the soil needs to be turned over and broken up, to help aerate it (a Scrabble word if ever I heard one). I also removed the stones, which is especially important if you’re planting from seeds. Step Five - Dig in the pots when the little plants look old enough to fend for themselves. Once they were installed, I added enough bamboo canes

and netting to deter any opportunistic gastropodabout-garden. Or so I thought. Within a day of completing our defences we were invaded, in a flagrant act of mollusc aggression. We employed slug pellets; we - that is, I - made random security patrols. Enemy snails were sent to the chickens for summary execution, also known by the chooks as ‘snack time’. I did try and reason with the slugs, principally because the chickens weren’t keen on them, but settled for either eviction into the back lane or incarceration in the garden waste bin. But still they came. My vigilance gradually paid off and our plant casualties decreased. Then came that magical day when the first veg flowers appeared. We weren’t out of the woods (or slugs) yet though and you’d be surprised by the amount of slug pellets we used. Honestly, I don’t know where they put it all. Having freshly picked beans, from garden to plate in a matter of minutes, is one of life’s little pleasures. Having to play nettle roulette, when picking the mange tout, because I couldn’t be bothered to keep up with the weeding, was less of a joy. The mange tout still tasted great though and it has me thinking about nettle soup. Next time I’ll let the beanlings grow taller before I plant them in, to give them more of a fighting chance. I’ll also make my own peat-less pots out of old newspaper. It’s the Blue Peter approach to green living. Derek Thompson is a writer and humourist based in the West Country. She qualified as a dentist in 1992 from Guy’s Dental Hospital and worked for a few years in South-east London getting good experience before returning to Southampton in 1998. Derien has worked in the New Forest and locally in Chandlers Ford before joining Smile. She is enthusiastic about preventative treatment and minimally invasive dentistry which means natural tooth structure is kept, rather than being drilled away. Relieving Pain
Naturally Health experts advise that natural alternatives to over-the-counter pain relief are often the best solution. Julie Penfold looks at natural pain relief options for common health complaints. It’s an instant reaction for so many of us when pain first strikes; we simply take something to relieve our symptoms. Popping a pill is frequently our default setting and our usual answer is to take paracetamol, ibuprofen or aspirin to relieve symptoms – the most popular over-the-counter painkillers. The main pain-killing ingredient in aspirin is salicylic acid, which is found naturally in the herbs willow bark, poplar and meadowsweet. While willow bark and poplar are only available via a herbalist, meadowsweet can be found in natural health stores. Meadowsweet can be drank as a tea and is very effective at tackling pain fast, says natural medicine practitioner, Susse Wedel. “For general pain-killing use, ginger, turmeric and cayenne pepper are very good options. You can ingest these by adding to a hot water drink or sprinkling on food as and when required,” adds Susse. Tackling Headaches For headaches brought on by stress or tension, the herb rosemary is Susse’s top tip for relieving nervous tension, and just inhaling the aroma can help to ease tension. Rosemary essential oil can also be rubbed directly onto the temple for instant relief. Lavender and chamomile are two of the best relaxation herbs around and are a super option for easing headache pain. As stress headaches are commonly caused by a constriction of blood vessels in the head, rosemary and lavender can help to ease this pressure. These herbs are all available as herbal teas and are equally effective when consumed as a drink. Herbs which have an affinity to the head tend to have a high content of calcium, magnesium and potassium, which are all naturally powerful against headache pain. For migraine sufferers, ginkgo can help to provide relief from painful symptoms. Drinking plenty of water and cutting out stimulants in the diet such as caffeinated drinks, sugar, tobacco and chocolate can also help, as these foods can trigger migraines, as well as prolonging them. Muscle Strain Adding several handfuls of fresh thyme to a bath can be an effective alternative to over-the-counter pain relief for muscle strain, as thyme eases both muscular and rheumatic pain. St John’s Wort oil and rosemary oil can also help to ease muscular aches and pains. Foods containing magnesium such as wholegrains, bananas,
spinach, broccoli, tofu, nuts, seeds, beans and pulses can also assist in minimising painful flare-ups. Menstrual Pain Ginger helps to relax the uterine muscles and stops painful cramps, spasms and contractions. Drinking a ginger herbal tea, or creating your own tea by grating ginger and adding to hot water, can provide fast relief from severe period pain. As an additional tip, Susse recommends topping up with hot water regularly as this renews the active painkilling properties and provides longer relief. Raspberry leaf tea is also effective for balancing hormones, relaxing muscles and relieving menstrual cramps. To ease bloating and pre-menstrual tension symptoms, Susse recommends yarrow tea. Other super relievers for period pain include: chamomile as it is high in calcium, minerals and contains muscle relaxant properties and valerian as this helps to reduce cramping and relaxes stomach muscles. In addition, taking a vitamin B6 supplement can also help to tackle muscle spasms associated with period pain. by Julie Penfold

DISCOVER LIFE BEGINS
Life Begins The Art of Downsizing Neither my husband nor I were intentional hoarders. It just happened that our family house was blessed – some might say, cursed – with handy storage spaces. Built-in cupboards, understairs spaces, a loft, a shed and even a garage all served to quietly absorb our superfluous items. Like the chains worn by Marley’s ghost in Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol”, we felt the weight of our past lives bearing down upon us every time we opened a cupboard door. It was time to downsize. We started by selling some of the smaller items on Ebay. This popular online auction site takes a relatively low commission of 10% (although you should be prepared to pay some associated listing fees). All you need is a good camera and a willingness to painstakingly write up each item for sale. Once it’s up on the site, you can expect a nailbiting wait for the bids to come in. Often an item will remain unsold all week and then someone will bid in the last few seconds. As the payment zooms into your PayPal account, be ready to despatch your item. You’ll need to ensure it’s well packed and sent within the timeframe you’ve indicated if you want to keep that essential 100% positive feedback score. We found online auction sites were great for selling small objects that could be easily posted, but larger items, such as pieces of furniture, proved harder to shift. You can list your piece for ‘collection only’ but more than once I’ve had to re-list a piece of furniture after the successful bidder developed a case of cold feet. If you haven’t the patience for online auctions, car boot sales can provide a useful alternative providing you’re prepared to let your treasured
60
C A L L D I S CO V E R M AG A Z I N E S O N 02 3 8 02 7 6 3 61
possessions go for a fraction of their value. However, it’s not a good way to sell valuable jewellery, antiques or other high value items. When we wanted to sell a large, Georgian sideboard that had belonged to my mother, we took it to a local auction room. The idea of putting the piece in a live auction was exciting, but we were unprepared for the fees we would need to pay in addition to the auctioneer’s commission of 17.5%. We enjoyed the buzz of the auction and fortunately the piece exceeded its reserve, but the underlying costs – including transportation, photographic fee and VAT - made a significant dent in the ‘hammer price’ achieved. Live auction is still one of the best options for really valuable items, but you should think carefully about using this method to sell less expensive pieces. If, like us, you have odd bits of low value furniture to clear, you could contact a local dealer. You can save time by taking pictures along to the shop so the dealer can see exactly what you have to sell. The art of successful downsizing requires patience and ingenuity. Try to avoid employing a ‘one size fits all’ solution such as a house clearance service. It takes time to whittle down a lifetime of possessions, so it’s best to begin the process well before you put your house on the market. Of course, it’s sad to let go of the past, but it can also be liberating. We found it helped to take pictures of the things we really loved before sending them on their way. Tell yourself that you’ve enjoyed owning these items, but now it’s time to for them to become someone else’s treasured keepsake.

Times are tough? It could be good news Shortly after taking office as Chancellor of the Exchequer, Gordon Brown said that he intended to free Britain from the cycle of ‘boom and bust’. What a vote winning proposition; most of us would be willing to forgo a boom if it meant the economy was on a bit more of a level and our current lifestyle was assured. 10 years later during his short tenure as Prime Minister he was eating his words. The economy was sliding towards a recession and the downturn was worse than in the Conservative days. All economies are prone to boom and bust and whilst not totally understood, there is one major factor that is acknowledged and it’s this: Our economy exists because there are human beings buying, selling and using, and we are emotional creatures. We can swing very quickly
from optimism to pessimism, spendthrift to miser and vice versa. So a government could implement even a small economic tweak e.g. an interest rate rise, with the aim of slowly deflating the balloon rather than popping it, and the markets and the general public can react to an unanticipated degree – either negatively or positively. The press, full of articles written by humans, loves to do a bit of doom mongering and can influence our behaviour. Some say that human experience is also an important factor. Say ten years ago you were 30 and borrowed money on credit cards and ...Continued on page 66

from banks. At 40 you are still struggling to repay that debt having seen a downturn in your income. In 10 years more if your income returned to the same relative level as when you were 30, there’s just no way you’ll take out big borrowings again. Give it 30 years more though, and a new generation won’t have that previous experience to learn from and a new boom will go off. Throw in a few unpredicted events too e.g. 9/11, and all economies struggle to stabilise. Clearly we are not in a boom at the moment. But it’s been a few years since the economy first went into recession and few years more than that when growth started to slow. Whilst nobody would be brave enough to predict that we are at or near the bottom of the curve yet, you could say we are nearer to going back up than we were a while back. What a recession does do though is to consolidate. Those that run a good business (selling something people want, offering a good service, and having efficient processes and

systems) will survive, while their competitors will be forced out. This in turn reduces the competition in the market, meaning what business is around has fewer people going after it. The point being: make sure you tick all the boxes. Undoubtedly though it’s a tougher market out there so keeping your eye on growing – or at least maintaining - your business is essential. For example, if you are a small business, how often do you email people you’ve done business with before? They are far more likely to buy than a brand new cold prospect because they know you and they trust you. But they might have forgotten about you and it’s your job to remind them.

Parting with Protection It is a common belief that the three most stressful things that a person can face during his or her lifetime are divorce, death and moving house, but what seems to be less understood is how easily all these difficult situations can impact on each other and cause havoc to financial affairs. The first time I encountered an example of this was when, many years ago, I was acting for a woman whose husband had initiated divorce proceedings. The divorce petition had been issued and the process was moving along when, suddenly, the soon-to-be ex-husband passed away. It transpired that the gentleman in question had not made any changes to his Will since he was first married and consequently his entire estate and fortune was received by his wife. The decree absolute had not been issued, the couple were still technically married and so the wishes expressed in the Will had to be honoured as a legally-binding document. Of course in this instance, my client was the one who financially benefited from the unchanged Will, but I remember being struck at the time by the contradiction of a man who was so focused on making sure his wife would no longer be
part of his life, that he paid no attention to ensure she would no longer be part of his financial affairs. As I continued my career, this situation has occurred on several cases which, in my opinion, amounts to a surprisingly regularity. Spouses have passed away whilst still technically being married to the partner they were in the process of divorcing and the intended divorcee walked away with everything the deceased had wanted to ensure they didn’t get during divorce proceedings. The moment a client comes to our firm determined to initiate divorce proceedings, we feel we have a duty of care to suggest they change their Will in accordance with their intentions for the next stage of their lives. The one piece of advice that I always give to those seeking to protect their financial affairs after they are gone, is that a Will needs to be reviewed every time there is change in personal circumstance. In the same way that insurance companies need you to contact them if you move house or change your car a Will needs to be updated and managed. As life changes, make sure your Will keeps up. by Graham Payne

ChoreSwap.com Don't Pay, ChoreSwap Choreswap.com is a new community-based website which aims to put people in contact with each other to swap their chores, skills and services without exchanging any money. It is starting up in the Chandlers Ford area to help people save money, meet new people and strengthen the community. Many people have something they can offer and something that they need in return. Anything from help with the shopping, help with a computer, dog walking or assembling flat-packed items, to a tennis or golf lesson, a reflexology session or simply companionship. There are over 80 different chores in six categories. It is recognised that some people may not be able to offer much, or may not

need much in return, so 'Just a Cup of Tea' can also be selected. When you sign up you can select chores that you may need help with, and chores that you may be able to offer in return. These can be added and removed from your profile page at any time. You can then search for people with compatible Choreswaps. If you think there's a match, you can make contact via the website. Choreswap is designed for everyone to use, not just people who are professionals at what they do. So by offering a chore you don't have to be an expert but just someone who may be able to provide some level of assistance to help others. Choreswap is free to join and free to use. It only takes thirty seconds to sign up without having to commit to anything, so why not give it a try?

THE CHANDLERS FORD DIRECTORY LOCAL NEWS & VIEWS
For Life Experiences “For Life Experiences” are a not-for-profit organisation based at the Fishing Lakes in Ampfield. We run educational courses and tuition using angling and outdoor pursuits to engage people who would not normally access the outdoor environment including adults, families and young people form deprived inner city areas. Running the centre and fishing lakes is a rewarding and time consuming job and we are in desperate need of some local volunteers to help with the general maintenance around the lakes on a weekly basis. Ideally we are looking for a group of half a dozen nice, local people to carry out gardening, pruning, grass cutting and general work around our lovely lakes. We are a small, friendly and busy enterprise. There will always be tea, coffee, tools and a smile waiting for those who are helping out and we would like to build up a regular group. If you could help, please contact Graham Mabey For Life Experiences UK Ltd www.forlifeexp.com 07872 616 798
Hiltingbury Lakes gets a ‘makeover’ Hiltingbury Lakes has benefited from a range of environmental improvements as part of an exciting partnership project between Eastleigh Borough Council and the Environment Agency. The £30k project has a number of aims including improvements to the overall look of the lakes and the quality of the water. This in turn, will help to increase both the diversity of habitat and the range of plants and animals in and around the lakes. In addition, the water quality will be improved through better management of the fish populations. The works that have been carried out include creating a reed bed at the northern end of the lakes, providing areas of planting around the

Community First Responders in Chandlers Ford A Community First Responder is a person who attends a potentially life-threatening emergency. Community First Responders answer calls in their neighbourhood, so the potential for them to arrive on scene before an ambulance is vital in providing immediate life-saving treatment. These extra minutes do help to save lives. In case of cardiac arrest, for every minute that passes without cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and defibrillation, a patient's chances of survival decreases by 14%. They use life-saving skills, such as the use of the automated external defibrillator (AED), to provide early and often vital intervention for patients. Once an ambulance crew arrives at the scene, CFRs work alongside a clinically qualified practitioner. Community First Responders are trained by us to provide life-saving treatment at a recognised level and they are always backed up with the nearest available ambulance. Interested in becoming a CFR? existing island and the installation of floating islands to create further marginal habitat. Chair of Chandler’s Ford Local Area Committee Councillor Pamela Holden-Brown said “This is a really exciting project to help improve the lakes which are described as our area’s ‘jewel in the crown’. The improvements will help to safeguard the lakes for future generations to enjoy and encourage a greater range of plants, insects and animals.” Environment Agency Project Officer Hannah Wright said “The lake is a fantastic amenity for the local community and anglers to enjoy. This project will improve the ecosystem not only for the fish, birds and plants but will also provide a healthier environment for all.” The project follows on from works carried out in February this year to cut back trees to improve the oxygen content of the water for the fish stocks by improving the flow of air over the lakes.
