Dear Neighbours Well, talk about lucky! We decided at the beginning of this year that we wouldn’t plan a summer holiday abroad but we would do a couple of small breaks within the UK. You can appreciate what our thoughts about that decision were in mid-July with the school holidays imminent and the weather having rained non-stop since the beginning of June. Uneasy could be one description, desperate and dreading it another. However with just three days to go before end of term, the sun came out, the temperatures soared and we were able to take a 4 day break in Cornwall on a bargain last minute deal. When we came back home the Olympics had just started which we were glued to, so exciting and didn’t we do well? Then in the second week of August we had a booking to go to the Edinburgh Festival for four days. With dire warnings from a Scottish friend of ‘ye dinnae need yer shorts’ we duly packed for a Scottish summer (i.e. winter) just putting in lighter clothes in as an afterthought. Well would you know we were lucky again – it was glorious, we did need those shorts and the woollies were left at home. If you’ve never been to the Festival I can tell you it was wonderful. We had just the best time with a mix of hilarious, moving and highly entertaining shows at reasonable prices – some free even - and Edinburgh is a beautiful city (all the more so in the sunshine). We also saw the Royal Yacht Britannia which is berthed there and imagined ourselves being Royalty for a day. Back home for the last few days of the Olympics and as I write, the Paralympics to look forward to. I’ll gloss over the week that I was glued to my chair putting the magazine together – not that thrilling I admit – but I’m always pleased with the end result, as are the residents in the area who are kind enough to say how much they enjoy receiving Discover Chandlers Ford. It makes it all worthwhile. Till next time. Tania

Seasonal Recipe This quick curry is so easy to make and much cheaper than a take away. We’ve used lean lamb steaks but you could replace the lamb with pork fillet, chicken or turkey. Heat 1tbsp of the oil in a large deep frying pan. Add the lamb chunks and fry over a high heat until browned all over. Remove the lamb from the pan with a slotted spoon and set aside. Add the rest of the oil to the pan and fry the onion and aubergine for 7-8 minutes, stirring all the time until golden. Stir in the curry paste and cook for 1 minute then pour in the sieved tomatoes and bring to the boil. Return to the lamb to the pan and reduce the heat to a simmer. Cover and cook gently for 25-30 minutes until the lamb is tender. Stir occasionally and add a splash of water if needed. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Serve the curry in warmed bowls garnished with coriander and with chapattis, sliced tomatoes, cucumber and onions.
Serves 4 Ready in 50 minutes
Lamb and Aubergine Curry • 3 tbsp sunflower oil • 650g lean lamb steaks, cut into chunks • 1 onion, peeled and chopped • 1 large aubergine, cut into cubes • 2tbsp Rogan Josh curry paste • 400g sieved tomatoes • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • Fresh coriander leaves, to garnish • Chapattis, sliced tomatoes, cucumber and onion, to serve
TIP
You’ll find jars of curry pastes in most supermarkets and they certainly take all the hassle out of making an authentic tasting curry at home. Rogan josh is a medium-hot paste but for a really mild flavour use a korma paste or go for a vindaloo paste if you prefer a curry with a little more heat.

DISCOVER MONTHLY FEATURE
The Elephant in the Room During a storytelling workshop on the isle of Sheppey in Kent last year - when residents were asked to come forward with local myths and legends - an intriguing story from Tudor times emerged. Queen Elizabeth I was said to have visited Sheppey unexpectedly in 1582, and the mayor of the town (who was also a thatcher) was so shocked to see the royal retinue that he fell off a roof, ripping his breeches as he went. Sympathetic to his obvious embarrassment, the queen promised to send him a new pair of breeches each year to commemorate the event. However, the mayor became tired of receiving his annual gift of breeches and asked if the Queen would send something for the town instead. In response he received a letter promising “an elephant”. The town made preparations to feed and shelter this unusual gift, including the construction of a stoutly built pen next to the harbour. It was only when the royal messenger arrived on the due date with a small purse of coins that the letter was re-examined: on a second reading the word was found to be “equivalent”, not “elephant”. One can only imagine the reaction of the disgruntled townsfolk. To a 21st century audience it may seem odd to hear a Tudor story relating to elephants, as they are so strongly identified with the British Empire and all things Victorian. However, our nation’s relationship with this fascinating animal began much, much earlier. Britain officially began its love affair with the elephant in 1256, when Henry III received one as a gift from Louis IX of France and ordered his sheriffs to build a pen measuring 40 foot long and 20 foot wide in the Tower of London. It’s not hard to imagine the mixture of fear and fascination which must have greeted this new arrival: in fact, it’s not unlikely that the capital would have been gripped by ‘elephant fever’, with an outpouring of stories, ballads, carvings and paintings all celebrating the King’s exotic prisoner in the Tower. Around the same period, an ancient manuscript called the Physiologus Theobaldi was translated from the Latin, providing some fascinating (albeit wildly inaccurate and wholly improbable) facts about the elephant. For centuries this text was considered an absolute authority on elephants. Even Shakespeare borrowed from the Physiologus when he wrote: “The elephant hath joints, but
16
C A L L D I S CO V E R M AG A Z I N E S O N 02 3 8 02 7 6 3 61
none for courtesy; his legs are legs for necessity, not for flexure”, reflecting the common belief that the elephant was unable to bend its legs. Today elephants are seen as familiar, friendly creatures but – thanks to the Physiologus – our ancestors revered them as semi-mythical beings. No wonder then, that a wealth of legends and stories collected around them. Time Team’s Guy de la Bedoyere believes the Queenborough story possibly originated as a folk myth, inspired by Henry III’s elephant in the Tower. Sheppey’s elephant story certainly bears all the hallmarks of legend: it has been told in a number of different versions, with the gift ascribed to various different queens, including Edward III’s Queen Philippa, Elizabeth I and Queen Victoria. However tempting it may be to believe that the Sheppey story is the stuff of mere myth or legend, there is evidence to suggest that it has some basis in truth. Next to Queenborough Harbour there is a small public park not much bigger than a horse paddock: locals still refer to this modest piece of public green as “the Elephant Park.” By Claudia Leaf

Suited and Booted Otterbourne resident Duncan Holley, has been collecting memorabilia and photos of Southampton FC for 40 odd years. This has been done by going to post-card fairs, internet, agencies etc - all the usual places - but also spending many hours driving around the country visiting old players and their families to beg, steal or borrow their photographs or take photos of their medals and caps. The club gave him official historian status in 1998 which was a great help when resourcing these photos and the club's history but still, sometimes he had to pay up to £300 to acquire an image. As the club's post war history had already been comprehensively covered by Duncan’s previous book "In that Number" in 2003, he thought it was time to do something for the pre-war period and so he has released “Suited and Booted”. Because the history was comparatively ancient (no one alive who remembers it) he had to include a potted abridged script to accompany the photos, but he realised it would be the photos

that would make the book attractive as you can see above. Most of us are fascinated to see images from so many years ago whether football related or not. Every single man in the crowd (it would be easier to find the eponymous character in Where’s Wally, than to spot a woman in this crowd) is wearing a white shirt, a tie, a jacket and a hat. Many are smoking cigarettes or pipes. And it’s unlikely that any of them are still alive today. But of course it’s the history of the club itself that makes this beautifully illustrated and designed book a must-have for Southampton supporters, especially with the team’s higher profile now they have returned to the Premier League. Suited and Booted – A snapshot of pre-war Southampton in pictures, by Duncan Holley Available direct from Duncan for £15 at Duncan@duncanholley.co.uk, 07818 403122 Or from Hagiology Publishing, price: £16.95, www.hagiologists.com.

Mercedes Benz E63 AMG Price: £91,245 (as tested) Engine: 5.5-litre, V8 Power: 557bhp, 800Nm Max speed: 155mph 0-60mph: 4.0s
MPG: 28.8 Emissions: 230g/km Verdict: Bonkers fast, bonkers sound and bonkers price tag
If you asked a bloke to build a car – the sort that drinks real ale, has a hairy chest, likes football (maybe rugby) and ‘birds’ – you could probably guess what you would end up with. It would have a big engine. Actually, scrap that. It would have a MASSIVE engine. It would need to be rear wheel drive. It would have lots of toys to impress his mates and confuse his wife/ bird/life partner. And it would need to look flash. Oh, and probably be German. Let us introduce you, then, to the car that Dave Down The Duck built - the Mercedes E63 AMG must have been built by someone with more testosterone than an end of school prom. Let’s talk numbers first. Under the bonnet you will find a 5.5 litre V8 with two turbos. It produces a frankly ridiculous 557bhp and, with the AMG pack (£6,495) fitted to our test car, 800Nm of torque. This is about the same as a Harrier Jump Jet. Probably. It will hit 60mph in just four seconds and is limited (quite heavily) to 155 mph. Oh, and it has seven gears. Even the price tag is whopping – off the shelf it’s £74,695, but our test car with what appears to be every optional extra box ticked, weighed in at £91,245. And what does all that mean? It means this is
26

one scary super saloon. Not only does it sound like a Spitfire at full chat, but it’s football hooligan lairy. At 70 mph on a wet road it has the grunt to spin up the rear wheels. In fact at any speed, on pretty much any road, it has the power to spin up the rear wheels. Which is scary and smile inducing in equal measures. On the road, traction control fully engaged, it flickers its warning lights on the exit of even supermarket car parks. On the track, with the safety nets disengaged it is weapons grade bonkers. But bloody brilliant. Inside, the switchgear – and the fact there’s a Boeing-load of it – takes a while to get used to, but it’s incredibly comfortable. That’s probably something to do with the heated, cooling and massaging seats. The seats are so clever that they even inflate the side bolsters to hold you in place when you go around corners. And talking of clever, that’s one thing that gets up my nose a little about the Merc. It’s all a little bit too smart. No one wants their car to be cleverer than they are and at times the Merc certainly feels a bit too Skynet for my liking. However, as super saloons go, this Merc certainly has the right ingredients. It’s stupidly fast, sounds amazing and is long-haul comfortable. It’s just a little tougher to get to grips with than its biggest rival, the BMW M5, which is why we’d go for the Beemer instead.

You never know what you might find Chandlers Ford resident Don Crossley tells us of a very interesting experience buying some books at an auction. “A couple of winters ago I went to an auction and made a bid for some cricket books, which included a set of 17 Wisdens. By the time the sporting material came up for auction there were just 11 people present. I felt reasonably confident in being successful when the lot came up, as only two of us were interested. Within a minute or two, it was left for me to make the final offer, when my challenger 'dropped out' at £20. Just as the auctioneer was about to say, for the third and final time... up came an enthusiast from the internet, who stayed with me until the figure reached £60, whereupon I became the final bidder. At home when I was unpacking I picked up the final book from the carton and noticed that it was spoiled as the previous owner had pasted together the majority of pages. After I had prized open the book I found that a hole had been crudely cut through about a third of the pages. But in the hole I found five pieces of gold and inscribed on them were references to the Canadian Armed Forces fighting in the Mediterranean during WW2 and with further inspection, I came across references to Crete, Greece and the words Commander in Chief Southern Forces. So off I went on the Monday to Bonhams in Winchester, where I was given an initial opinion of "It's just basic, not much”. But I left the pieces for the estimator to assess and the

following day he phoned tell me the pieces were worth between £1400 and £1500. The estimate was spot on and they went for £1400 last June. When I recalled the find to a friend, he suggested I checked the remaining hardback wisdens, to seek whether further gold had been hidden but sadly, I have to state no; my luck had run out! September It’s September, and as we move into autumn, take a moment on Saturday 15th to gaze up at a sky that has become a battlefield. Thousands of feet above you an armada of German bombers drones sluggishly towards London, while swarms of Spitfires and Messerschmitt 109s play what looks from down here like a deadly game of tag. For this is not 2012 but 1940; and the Luftwaffe, believing the RAF beaten, has turned its attention from airfields and aircraft factories to industrial cities. But the battle you see overhead is the last of its kind. More than 1,500 aircraft of both sides are engaged in thrusts and parries that will last all day. Fighter Command is strong enough to stop the bombers getting through and to inflict heavy losses. From now on the Luftwaffe will give up costly daylight raids and turn instead to night bombing. The Battle of Britain is over. The Blitz has begun. And Britain is safe from invasion. Imagine the relief people must have felt when the Battle of Britain was won and the threat was averted. Not a bit of it! Operation Sealion had only been postponed, not cancelled. Britain had slaved all summer to strengthen its inadequate defences, and the work had to continue at the same breakneck pace. There was still, as General Brooke noted in his diary, the danger that Hitler had a surprise to spring: invasion fever had to be maintained!
Heinkel HE 111 during the Battle of Britain
with Hitler; in the Cabinet meetings of May 1940, even as the Dunkirk evacuations were beginning, he proposed to try again and was only very narrowly defeated. Churchill believed that peace would mean virtual slavery. Popular enthusiasm for the war had to be kept up at all costs. He was first buoyed by a surge of 1,500,000 volunteers for the Home Guard, formed on 14th May only four days after he took office; but Dunkirk, the Italian declaration of war on 10th June, and the French armistice on 22nd June weakened his hand.
With hindsight it’s clear that there never was much actual danger. Hitler’s tiny navy, his landing-craft improvised from Rhine barges, his air force of tactical bombers and short-range fighters, his negligible logistical tail, could never have mounted a large-scale amphibious operation against an enemy that grew stronger by the day.
His answer was to mobilise Britain and keep it mobilised. The south and east coasts were mined and wired. “Non-essential” civilians were evacuated from Kent and Essex. Romney Marsh was flooded. 28,000 concrete pill-boxes and 50,000 “fougasses” (petrol-based IEDs), were installed along 50 “stop lines” formed of hundreds of miles of anti-tank ditches 18ft deep and 11ft wide. Sockets just big enough for an anti-tank mine were dug in road surfaces. Bridges were wired and road-signs removed. The pace kept up well into 1941 when local invasion committees were formed and flame barrages were developed to defend the beaches. People watched the work going on and if the defences were real, then the threat must be too.
But to Churchill, maintaining the fear of invasion was essential in order to head off the peace party led by his Foreign Secretary, Lord Halifax. Under Chamberlain, Halifax had already approached Mussolini to act as an intermediary
Only in June 1941 when Hitler attacked Russia were invasion preparations scaled down. But it’s odd to reflect, all these years later, that Corporal Jones’s trusty cold steel was aimed not so much at Hitler as Lord Halifax.

ChoreSwap.com Don't Pay, ChoreSwap Choreswap.com is a new community-based website which aims to put people in contact with each other to swap their chores, skills and services without exchanging any money. It is starting up in the Chandlers Ford area to help people save money, meet new people and strengthen the community. Many people have something they can offer and something that they need in return. Anything from help with the shopping, help with a computer, dog walking or assembling flat-packed items, to a tennis or golf lesson, a reflexology session or simply companionship. There are over 80 different chores in six categories. It is recognised that some people may not be able to offer much, or may not

need much in return, so 'Just a Cup of Tea' can also be selected. When you sign up you can select chores that you may need help with, and chores that you may be able to offer in return. These can be added and removed from your profile page at any time. You can then search for people with compatible Choreswaps. If you think there's a match, you can make contact via the website. Choreswap is designed for everyone to use, not just people who are professionals at what they do. So by offering a chore you don't have to be an expert but just someone who may be able to provide some level of assistance to help others. Choreswap is free to join and free to use. It only takes thirty seconds to sign up without having to commit to anything, so why not give it a try?

DIS COV ER LO C AL WALK
Braishfield Walk
Walk Distance 4.5 miles Historical Notes Settlement at Braishfield goes back to at least the stone-age, remains of a hut being discovered at Broom Hill just to the north east of the village. The remains of a Roman Villa have been discovered close by. The ‘Monarch’s Way is a 615 mile walking trail following the supposed route of King Charles’ II escape from Oliver Cromwell after his defeat at the battle of Worcester in 1651. The church of All Saints was built in 1855.
•
Braishfield is most easily reached from the A3090 Romsey to Ampfield road. On entering the village from the south, drive past the Wheatsheaf Pub and park in the village hall car park (Post Code SO51 0PN) located just past just past the recreational ground on the right. Note that this walk can be muddy.
•
Leave the car park and turn left down the pavement towards the pub.
•
Cross Common Hill Road and turn left into the pub car park. Walk through the car park to the right hand corner at the rear of the building.
•
Go through the kissing gate into a field and turn right along the field boundary.
•
Cross a stile into a second field and continue along the right hand boundary.
•
At the far end of the field, turn left for thirty yards and cross another stile into a field.
•
Head slightly diagonally left to a visible stile in the field boundary. Cross the stile

and the small footbridge beyond. •
Follow the footpath left and emerge into a large field. Turn right along the boundary line towards woodland.
•
Walk uphill and cross the stile in the corner of the field. Go through the wooden kissing gate into the woodland.
•
Follow the clearly defined footpath along the side of Hilliers Arboretum.
•
Go through a wooden kissing gate and turn right walking between fences.
•
With a locked wooden farm gate to your right, cross the stile on your left to enter Ampfield Wood.
•
The footpath opens out to a grass track. Ignore the footpath merging from the left, Keep straight ahead.
•
Track becomes a mixture of gravel and grass. At a ‘T’ junction, turn right onto a gravel track.
•
At the next ‘T’ junction, turn left along a gravel track.

D I S C O V E R THE BET TER L I F E
The Better Life
The Better Life is the tales and observations of a London townie, who downshifted to Cornwall. A bit like the Good Life, but with the internet. It all started one morning in the kitchen, when Anne asked, “How would you feel about keeping chickens?” I didn’t answer right away. In the time we’ve been together I’ve learned the language of subtext. I finished my breakfast and replied, “When are we picking them up?”
The chickens were confined to barracks for a few days, to allow them to settle in and retrain the cat. Once they emerged, we noted the following:
I wasn’t entirely averse to the idea of a little self-sufficiency. Who doesn’t have fond memories of The Good Life - and especially Felicity Kendal? Plus it’d be a chance to shed my townie upbringing and dispel that grim story my dad used to tell - the one about dispatching a chicken for the first and only time, where the head came off in in his hands and the headless chicken ran up the path.
At least an egg a day!
Stage one in Operation Chickadee was researching coops and chicken feed and, well, chickens really. There’s a lot to learn about chicken behaviour, the different breeds and their foibles. Having taken advice, we decided on hybrids, as they’re more reliable for eggs and point-of-lay birds for immediate production. We went upmarket with the coop, choosing an easy care metal and plastic affair from Omlet (yes, really!). Now all we needed to do was find the right chickens - and Anne was already on the case. The day after the chicken coop and run were installed in the front garden, we entered the mysterious world of farm supplies. Layers pellets, grit (for strong shells), straw and worming treatment - check. However, my suggestion that we buy jodhpurs as well fell on stony ground. Having located a poultry supplier, we headed out with an empty cat box and a pile of newspaper. The farmer led us to a densely populated barn and said, “Take your pick.” I don’t know exactly how Anne chose the chickens - which the farmer insisted were hens - but we went home with Sweet Pea (a Plymouth Rock / Maran) and Pepperami (a Plymouth Rock / Rhode Island).

A huge reduction in the snail population. Sweet Pea failed to live up to her name, went broody and took it out on the cat (luckily it’s a very fast cat). The garden quickly came to resemble The Somme. Something had to be done because, unlike me, Anne is a passionate gardener. Plus, the round up in the evenings was time consuming. We fenced off one half of the garden and, after a few ‘great escapes’, augmented the fencing with extra bamboo canes in leaf, whereupon the chickens looked as if they were starring in their own episode of Tenko. Sweet Pea and Pepperami were both restful to watch and very entertaining. They performed chicken yoga wing stretching exercises. They played tug-of-war with snails and ‘I’ll have what she’s having’ tussles over worms, morning porridge and, on one unfortunate occasion, a wood mouse. Our neighbours relish the availability of fresh, local eggs and they enjoy the egg-laying serenade every morning. And the poultry poop makes great compost. No chickens were harmed in the making of this feature. My dad would be proud. Derek Thompson is a writer and humourist based in the West Country. DISCOVER LIFE BEGINS
Life Begins Don’t let your dream cottage turn into a nightmare It’s the stuff of Daily Mail competitions. It’s the fantasy that drives the holiday cottage industry: when once a year we satisfy our desire for rural living by renting our own dream cottage. But what happens when – like newly retired couple Gary and Linda Speed from Basingstoke - you decide to live the dream? After many years in suburbia the couple were eager to try life in a village community, so they set out to buy a spacious, detached property in the West Country, with off-street parking, original features and countryside views. Having a budget of £300,000 to spend, they were confident that they would find their perfect home. Gary and Linda began with high hopes, but after several disappointing trips to Somerset, Wiltshire and Dorset, they had to admit that their perfect home might be beyond their financial reach. Although house prices have slumped in recent years, there is still a strong market for period properties in popular areas such as the Lake District, Suffolk, the Cotswolds, Sussex and the West Country.
“We really thought we’d found our dream home,” says Linda. “We knew that it needed updating but it was absolutely beautiful and we couldn’t understand why someone else hadn’t already snapped it up.” It wasn’t long before the couple began to appreciate why the cottage had remained unsold. As the various surveys and building reports they had commissioned began to pile up, the true cost of the renovation began to emerge. The cottage had woodworm, weevil and rising damp. The picturesque climbing plant that grew across the front had loosened the pointing and the stonework needed extensive repair. A damaged portion of the thatch would cost over £10,000 to replace and the remainder of the roof would need to be re-thatched within five years. The electrical wiring had decayed and the garden fence would cost hundreds of pounds to replace.
Determined not to give up, the couple continued their search and some months later they came across an accessibly priced village property that seemed to tick all the right boxes.
Fortunately Gary and Linda had taken advice from building industry professionals before they committed to buying the property, and they reluctantly pulled out. They had incurred costs along the way – solicitors’ fees plus the cost of the surveys and reports – but at least they had avoided the nightmare of a ‘money pit’ purchase.
The attractive stone-built, thatched cottage had no central heating and lacked a modern kitchen and bathroom, but it did have a large garden plus all the period features they had been looking for - an inglenook fireplace, exposed beams, flagstones and attic-style bedrooms.
If Gary and Linda’s dreams didn’t match up to reality, they were not alone. In a recent survey by AA Home Emergency Response, 2,005 people were questioned about their ideal home. 28% of the respondents fantasised about a owning a property in a rural location, with a large, open-

plan kitchen/diner and living area featuring high on their ‘must-have’ list. 48% of the sample wanted sea views while slightly more than half prioritised views of mountains or open fields. For anyone familiar with the British countryside, there appears to be an immediate disconnect between the wishes of the survey respondents and the type of property generally found in rural locations Rather than enjoying expansive views, many village dwellings face directly onto a busy road. A large kitchen/diner is also a rare find – particularly if the cottage is Grade II listed and the local authority does not permit structural alterations. In fact, the competition for properties that ‘have it all’ is so intense that in sought-after areas you will need to spend £500,000 or more for a property with good internal space, enjoying excellent countryside or seaside views. Buyers on a more modest budget will inevitably have to compromise.
After their experience in Dorset, Gary and Linda seriously considered giving up their dream of a West Country home, but during a weekend trip to Somerset a ‘For Sale’ sign caught their eye. Gary takes up the story: “When our Satnav broke down we took a detour and passed through a large village we’d never visited before. We stopped to buy a newspaper and that’s when we saw the house. We liked the area so we rang the estate agent straight away to request a viewing.” Linda and Gary eventually purchased a small, terraced town house facing directly onto the street - a far cry from the ‘roses round the door’ cottage with a large garden they had originally envisaged. As Linda explains: “We knew we had to compromise on our dream, but we loved the village and in the end it didn’t really feel like a compromise. It was different, but somehow the chemistry was right.” by Claudia Leaf

THE CHANDLERS FORD DIRECTORY LOCAL NEWS & VIEWS
Volunteers Wanted “For Life Experiences” are a not-for-profit organisation based at the Fishing Lakes in Ampfield. We run educational courses and tuition using angling and outdoor pursuits to engage people who would not normally access the outdoor environment including adults, families and young people form deprived inner city areas. Running the centre and fishing lakes is a rewarding and time consuming job and we are in desperate need of some local volunteers to help with the general maintenance around the lakes on a weekly basis. Ideally we are looking for a group of half a dozen nice, local people who could be left to their own devices to carry out gardening, pruning, grass cutting and general work around our lovely lakes. The site is a beautiful one and hopefully those who get involved will feel like they are contributing to a good cause. We are a small, friendly and busy enterprise and need a dedicated group to help with the work. There will always be tea, coffee, tools and a smile waiting for those who are helping out and we would like to build up a regular group who can take ownership of the tasks rather than different groups every week. If you could help, please contact Graham Mabey For Life Experiences UK Ltd www.forlifeexp.com 07872 616 798
Do you have questions about UK Overseas Aid?
Chandler’s Ford MP Steve Brine has invited a Minister from the coalition Government to answer your questions about Britain’s policy on overseas aid. Stephen O’Brien MP, a Minister at the Department for International Development, will be here on the evening of Thursday 13th September. If you would like to attend this ticket only event, which will be held in central Winchester, please visit www.stevebrine.com/ukaid or call 01962 791110 to register.
Magazine Co-ordinator Wanted Discover Chandlers Ford is just one magazine within the Discover Magazines group. With a total of six titles and another on the way, the administration side of the business is proving too much to manage in house. We don’t have offices so you would need to have your own home working facilities and the job would be on a part-time, selfemployed basis. The responsibilities are mostly very flexible on time. You would deal with incoming emails from advertisers, from the community and from distributors and occasionally some phone calls, too. Outgoing calls would be related to chasing up advert copy or calling to take payment for advertising bookings. You’d be helping with managing the content

of the magazines and bookings. The less flexible part is when we are approaching a print deadline when you are likely to need to be available well into the evening to ensure everything is brought together. In other words, there will be a couple of long days each month, although you are not tied to specific hours. Our new team member needs to be a quick learner, well organised, comfortable with technology (inc Microsoft Office) and excellent at spelling and punctuation. Payment will be on a monthly retainer basis of up to £500 per month.

Parting with Protection It is a common belief that the three most stressful things that a person can face during his or her lifetime are divorce, death and moving house, but what seems to be less understood is how easily all these difficult situations can impact on each other and cause havoc to financial affairs. The first time I encountered an example of this was when, many years ago, I was acting for a woman whose husband had initiated divorce proceedings. The divorce petition had been issued and the process was moving along when, suddenly, the soon-to-be ex-husband passed away. It transpired that the gentleman in question had not made any changes to his Will since he was first married and consequently his entire estate and fortune was received by his wife. The decree absolute had not been issued, the couple were still technically married and so the wishes expressed in the Will had to be honoured as a legally-binding document. Of course in this instance, my client was the one who financially benefited from the unchanged Will, but I remember being struck at the time by the contradiction of a man who was so focused on making sure his wife would no longer be
part of his life, that he paid no attention to ensure she would no longer be part of his financial affairs. As I continued my career, this situation has occurred on several cases which, in my opinion, amounts to a surprisingly regularity. Spouses have passed away whilst still technically being married to the partner they were in the process of divorcing and the intended divorcee walked away with everything the deceased had wanted to ensure they didn’t get during divorce proceedings. The moment a client comes to our firm determined to initiate divorce proceedings, we feel we have a duty of care to suggest they change their Will in accordance with their intentions for the next stage of their lives. The one piece of advice that I always give to those seeking to protect their financial affairs after they are gone, is that a Will needs to be reviewed every time there is change in personal circumstance. In the same way that insurance companies need you to contact them if you move house or change your car a Will needs to be updated and managed. As life changes, make sure your Will keeps up. by Graham Payne

DISCOVER SHORT STORY
Short Story First Impressions Melissa did not oversleep. Instead she woke, just before the alarm, from a dream in which she had arrived at her first day at work still wearing her pyjamas. The morning welcomed her with a steady patter of rain. Once dressed in the clothes she carefully ironed two days ago, she opened the fridge door and discovered that her bowl of cereal had turned to sludge. Mum had told her not to add milk the night before. She paced the kitchen, chewing nervously. Punctuality wasn’t her strength, yet she was determined to make a good first impression. Today, she told herself, she would arrive on time at her new job looking calm, professional and organised. As planned she reached the solitary bus stop in good time. A man with a grey moustache joined her, struggling to carry both his briefcase and umbrella. “Excuse me”, he said “I don’t usually catch the bus. Could you tell me if I’ve got the right change?” He held out a palmful of pound coins, two euros, and one button. At that moment a lorry rumbled passed, causing the man’s umbrella to flip inside out. His coins jumped into the air, bounced off the pavement and joined the torrent of rainwater heading for the drain. Instinctively, Melissa chased after the coins, scooping her fingers through the greasy water. She even managed to rescue the button. Straightening up she smelt a gust of diesel fumes and watched in horror as her bus sailed past. Tears of fury pricked her eyes. “Was that the bus?” the man asked cheerfully as Melissa handed him back his change. “So sorry. Did you need to be somewhere urgently?” “It’s my first day at work.” Melissa suppressed a sob; things were bad enough without smudged mascara. “First day eh?” He smiled winsomely as though she’d just told him she was off to the zoo. “Where are you working?” Melissa did not feel in the mood for small talk but manners got the better of her. “Frinkley and Sons, just off the High Street.” “Good firm”, the man stroked his moustache thoughtfully. “I’m sure they’ll understand.” Melissa was not so sure. The next bus arrived late and packed with wet passengers. Melissa clung to the handrail in the steaming aisle, afraid to look at her watch. The bus crawled along through heavy

traffic, grinding to a halt at every stop. The town hall clock struck nine, and Melissa’s heart sank. As the bus pulled into the High Street, Melissa broke into a run before the doors even opened. She dodged pedestrians and puddles until, breathless, she burst through the door of Frinkley and Sons. Mrs Pringle, who had interviewed Melissa, sat at her desk. She cast a meaningful glance at the clock. “Sorry I’m late.” Melissa panted, rain water pouring down her forehead. “Well it’s nice of you to join us.” Mrs Pringle said dryly. She slowly looked Melissa up and down. Melissa felt miserable. This wasn’t the entrance she had so carefully planned. As she was taking off her coat, the office door opened and the man from the bus stop strolled in. “Before you say anything”, he declared, holding up his umbrella, “I would like to stress that it’s entirely my fault this young lady is late.” Melissa’s cheeks flushed even redder; she opened her mouth to protest. Mrs Pringle looked at them both in surprise and then smiled. “That’s alright Mr Frinkley. I’m sure”, she gave Melissa a smile, “there’s a perfectly reasonable explanation.” by Jackie Brewster

Hiltingbury Lakes gets a ‘makeover’ Hiltingbury Lakes has benefited from a range of environmental improvements as part of an exciting partnership project between Eastleigh Borough Council and the Environment Agency. The £30k project has a number of aims including improvements to the overall look of the lakes and the quality of the water. This in turn, will help to increase both the diversity of habitat and the range of plants and animals in and around the lakes. In addition, the water quality will be improved through better management of the fish populations. The works that have been carried out include creating a reed bed at the northern end of the lakes, providing areas of planting around the existing island and the installation of floating
islands to create further marginal habitat. Chair of Chandler’s Ford Local Area Committee Councillor Pamela Holden-Brown said “This is a really exciting project to help improve the lakes which are described as our area’s ‘jewel in the crown’. The improvements will help to safeguard the lakes for future generations to enjoy and encourage a greater range of plants, insects and animals.” Environment Agency Project Officer Hannah Wright said “The lake is a fantastic amenity for the local community and anglers to enjoy. This project will improve the ecosystem not only for the fish, birds and plants but will also provide a healthier environment for all.” The project follows on from works carried out in February this year to cut back trees to improve the oxygen content of the water for the fish stocks by improving the flow of air over the lakes.

DISCOVER LOCAL ATTRACTION
The Sir Harold Hillier Gardens Opens its newest visitor attraction In the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee year, The Sir Harold Hillier Gardens is celebrating the completion of its redesigned Centenary Border which is set to become one of the Gardens most iconic features. At an impressive 250 metres long it is believed to be the longest Double Border in the country and possibly Europe! Head of Collections at The Gardens David Jewell said: “This is one of our most ambitious projects which will help lead the Gardens into the next 25 to 50 years. As well as traditional perennial and woody plantings for the summer there are plenty of surprises including many new-on-thescene plants. We hope the plant combinations will inspire our visitors and provide thought provoking ideas for their own gardens” “This project has been five years in the planning and taken two years of dedicated work by landscape designers Julia Fogg Associates and The Gardens’ horticultural team plus many of the Gardens’ 150 volunteers.” With over 30,000 plants, the border will provide an extravaganza of colour, textures and shapes. Starting with spring bulbs and hellebores followed by an encyclopaedia of summer flowering perennials such as lupins, peonies, irises and geraniums, autumn- flowering asters and a range of grasses. Originally planted in 1964 by Sir Harold Hillier to celebrate 100 years of his family business, the border planting had become overgrown and disproportionate, large shrubs taking away almost all light and water from the remaining herbaceous plants. A central grass vista meant the attraction had to be closed annually from October to Easter. The development has been a huge undertaking. Following the agreed new design, one of the first tasks was the removal of 80% of overgrown plants, shrubs and trees, many of which were planted over 40 years ago. Much of this material
was propagated and relocated elsewhere within the collection. A key element of the new design is the stunning white granite paving which provides a front edge detail to the beds. Importantly it also allows visitors to enjoy the border all year round and in all weather conditions. Walking on the paving in winter, while enjoying the soft grass centre during summer time strolls. Striking diagonal pathways also encourage visitors to explore further into the arboretum to enjoy the magnolias, hamamelis and Sorbus etc. The Gardens would like to thank all sponsors and supporters whose generosity has made this project possible. In particular the Gardens is grateful to the Linbury Trust, The Hillier Family, the HDH Wills 1965 Trust, Hillier Nurseries, Veolia ProGrow, Taylors Bulbs, Freinds of the Gardens.

Coming Soon to Chandlers Ford... The Girls’ Brigade My name is Elisabeth Greenham and I am a lieutenant in the 15th Southampton Girls’ Brigade, but as I can no longer get to the meetings I have been exploring the possibility of setting up a new company in Chandlers Ford. The Girls’ Brigade is an international, uniformed, Christian youth organisation, and takes girls from 4/5 years old through to their late teens and possibly on to leadership themselves. Working in age appropriate sections the girls learn about different aspects of life through fun and varied activities, earning stickers, badges and certificates. With a new badge system and uniform it is going to be a very exciting venture. In order to
start up a new company I need the agreement of a church to be a base for the work, additional leaders and at least 10 girls (which I don’t yet have!) So ... I am now interested in hearing from anyone 18 +interested in becoming a leader with me (no prior knowledge is necessary, training etc is provided by GB personnel and CRB forms will need to be completed.) I am also looking for prospective girls and would love to hear from them (via their parents!) If there is sufficient interest from girls and leaders then we would hope to receive approval from the next church council meeting in July. I am intending to begin the weekly meetings in the Autumn term on a Thursday evening at the Methodist Church, the older girls finishing at 7.45. If you or anyone you know would be interested in joining us, please contact me on email chandlersfordgb@gmail.com or mob no. 07880677025 so that I can let you know of any future details.

Musical ambition and Icelandic Inspiration Mike Lindsay studied at Thornden and Barton Peveril schools and at a very early age (8years) decided that he would make a career in popular music. Although his parents were sceptical, they did encourage him and he did go on to realise his dream. Following success as part of a band called TUNNG with 5 albums and several worldwide tours under his belt, he moved to an isolated village in Iceland to rejuvenate his musical genes. The result of this musical project has now

come to fruition in the form of a new Icelandic band called “Cheek mountain thief”. Their music is a vibrant form with great Norse overtones. Now touring the UK, Mike must be a little homesick for Chandlers Ford as he has agreed that “Cheek Mountain Thief” will play for one night at the Point in Eastleigh in September 10th during their UK tour.

Freecycle®
Although small items are always welcomed by the charity shops, they don’t usually take electrical goods, larger items or pieces of furniture. However you can use The Freecycle® Network (online only) to find a new home for your unwanted clutter. This worldwide initiative – with local groups - is a way of giving away goods which you may not need but are still usable by others. The listings are text only so you don’t need to worry about pictures, and people will mail you via the site if they are interested. You choose one of the replies and the goods are usually collected within 24 hours – often much more quickly so it’s a very efficient way of recycling. It’s also a good place to go if you want something, although you have to have offered something before you can place a ‘wanted’ listing. You have to register as a Yahoo user first and then you can post messages which must be in the format Offered: Short Description, Location e.g. Offered: Portable TV, Chandlers Ford http://groups.yahoo.com/group/EastleighFreecycle/messages
