Delivered into the communities of Hedge End, West End & Botley
Hello and Welcome Well this is either ‘hello again’ or ‘welcome’ depending where you are in Hedge End, Botley or West End. This magazine was The Southampton Directory for a couple of years, and then earlier this year changed to Discover Hedge End which is of course its name now. However, even with the name change we didn’t feel we had our distribution coverage quite right, and so with some planning and a lot of map peering we’ve now settled on the areas of Hedge End, West End and Botley as the communities into which we are delivering this publication. So you may have seen us before or this magazine may be new to you. We print monthly alternating between two areas so you’ll receive your copy every other month. I talk of ‘we’ as if there was a big corporation behind the scenes, but far from it! Just two of us on the business full-time – Melanie who manages sales, marketing and distribution, and me (Tania) managing editorial, artwork and accounts. But there’s a small army of other people who help out part-time: Heather, our (talented and incredibly patient) designer, Jill our administrator, Kevin who chases the late-payers and our wonderful local distribution team who get the magazine through your door, whatever the weather.
Our aim is to be a resource for householders, featuring businesses, useful numbers, supermarkets hours and events taking place in and around the area. We also include editorial of interest to all – children’s and adult's puzzles pages, beauty, motoring, business tips and a recipe if we have space. But we do love printing local news and views – we just need you to send it in. Are you doing a marathon for charity? Do you have something to say about development in the area? Is your child’s school doing something for the community? If you have news to share, please send it in. Tania PS: As you’ll see from the logos at the bottom of the pages, we do cover other areas too, and offer great deals for advertising in our magazines.

Community First Responders in Hedge End Volunteers Wanted A Community First Responder (CFR) is a person available to be dispatched by an ambulance control centre in their local area. CFRs provide assistance in a medical emergency and most importantly to start and maintain the chain of survival in cardiac arrest patients until a fully equipped ambulance arrives. In the case of cardiac arrest, for every minute that passes without cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and defibrillation a patient's chances of survival decreases by 14%. CFRs use life-saving skills, such as the use of the automated external defibrillator (AED), to provide early and often vital intervention for patients suffering life-threatening emergencies in the immediate vicinity of where they live or work. Once an ambulance crew arrives at the scene, CFRs work alongside a clinically qualified practitioner.

Longer Library Opening Hours From Wednesday 3 October 2012, the Hedge End library will remain open all day on Wednesdays until 5pm, increasing its weekly opening time by four hours. The County Council, Hedge End Town Council and Eastleigh Borough Council funded the library’s recent refurbishment and the installation of self-service terminals, in turn freeing up the time of staff. The work, completed in June, cost £50,000 in total and included an interior makeover, new carpets, books and fresh furniture. Following this, Hedge End Town Council and Hampshire County Council worked together to recruit volunteers from the local community to work alongside staff, enabling the library to increase its opening hours on a Wednesday. The volunteers will be able to help customers use the self-service kiosks and the public computers, while library staff will continue to provide the full range of services, from answering enquiries, maintaining a good range of stock and providing fun and engaging activities for children. Vet’s Tip: With warmer winters and central heating, fleas are a year round problem. The little horrors get onto your pet and into your home causing problems ranging from sore bites to skin irritation, infections, hair loss and anaemia. A female flea can lay 50 or more eggs a day. These fall off your pet and are deposited around the house in carpets and bedding where they can remain dormant for many months before developing via larval and pupal stages into adult fleas. In just a few weeks two fleas can multiply into several thousand. By contrast ticks live in woodland and heathland waiting to attach themselves to passing pets. Once attached they feed on your pet's blood. Ticks cause two problems. Firstly they can cause a tissue reaction at the attachment site and secondly they can transmit diseases such as Lyme disease and Babesiosis. Contact your vet for advice on prevention and treatment of pet pests.

Baby Giraffe at Marwell! A beautiful Rothschild giraffe was born at Marwell Zoo on the 13th October. The new arrival - a boy - is experienced Mum Matilda's seventh calf and she is keeping a close eye on the youngster as he explores his new home. At the time of writing his name was still to be decided. He was born in the middle of the night so it was a great surprise for the keepers who opened the doors to the giraffe house in the morning! Like all babies he won't be small for long so get down to Marwell Wildlife Park and see him while he is still cute!

DISCOVER moNthly Feature
November Bit of a nothing month, November. After all the flash-bangwallop of Guy Fawkes Night and the various other feasts of light and feasts of the dead at the beginning of the month, it all goes rather quiet until Christmas. November is the last month of autumn rather than the first month of winter, but while everything is dank and gloomy it isn’t necessarily all that cold. So it’s an in-between month, really, and neither fish nor fowl: just drab. The poet Thomas Hood (1789-1845) pretty much summed it up: No sun– no moon! No morn– no noon– No dawn– no dusk– no proper time of day. No warmth, no cheerfulness, no healthful ease. No comfortable feel in any member– No shade, no shine, no butterflies, no bees, No fruits, no flowers, no leaves, no birds– November! And believe it or not, Hood was best known in his day as a humourist. There are no bank holidays and no big national events except Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday, which – despite their importance - aren’t generally looked forward to. Even the really big-time saints have opted not to have their feast days in November, so instead we’re left with a long list of second-string saints. St Floribert, for instance. St Austremonius. St Papulus. St Acepsimas. November 7th is devoted to St Blinlivet, who sounds like a malt whisky; on November 8th we have St Wiomad, who sounds like a world music festival; while on November 9th it’s the turn of St Aedh MacBricc – probably Irish, I’d guess. November 13th is the feast day of St Homobonus, or “good bloke”, and November 20th belongs to St Benignus, or “nice guy”. No more than you’d expect from a saint, I suppose. Although these are by no means front-line saints, some of them are pretty interesting. St Richard Whiting, for instance, whose feast day is November 15th, was the last Abbot of Glastonbury, hanged on Glastonbury Tor in 1539 for refusing to hand over the abbey to Henry VIII. St Nerses the Great (November 19th) was an Armenian bishop who in 373 was in trouble with the king – King Pap, would you believe – for denouncing his licentious, lascivious, and generally lustful ways. Pap had him poisoned. And St Nikon (November 26th) was neither Japanese nor a photographer but was in fact another Armenian. An Orthodox monk,

Humourist and poet Thomas Hood, National Gallery
Nikon followed the Byzantine army which reconquered Crete from the Arabs. His job was to reconvert the Greek peasants who had lapsed from the church or converted to Islam. Finally, Saints Pinnock and Winoc. They were the same person: a Breton, or possibly Welsh, or possibly Cornish missionary in the late 7th-early 8th century who converted the heathen Flemish. He has a town named after him near Dunkirk (Bergues or Sint Winoksbergen) and two hamlets in Cornwall, St Pinnock and St Winnow. Anyway, an interesting bunch of saints, but not really a corrective to November’s gloom. And November really is gloomy: the UK’s average hours of sunlight falls from 101 in October (74 in Scotland) to a mere 65 (43 in Scotland) in November, and we all get Seasonal Affective Disorder. My answer to this perennial bout of the blues is to proclaim a festival of light for the modern age: National SAD Day, when we as a nation all exchange vouchers for sun-lamp treatment. This will expose us to a plentiful dose of the sunshine vitamin and make us all joyous and frisky despite the weather. It will probably be on November 31st. By Ted Bruning

Police and Crime Commissioner Elections: Hampshire and the Isle of Wight
Elections will be held on 15 November to choose PCCs, as they will be known, who will replace police authorities currently in charge of 41 forces in England and Wales. Our PCC will be responsible for setting priorities for our police force, overseeing its budget and hiring our chief constable, currently Sir Alex Marshall. Those in the biggest force areas will get salaries of more than £100,000 and no prior police force experience is needed. The Hampshire commissioner's job will attract a salary of £85,000. A police and crime commissioner (PCC) is independent and will be elected to oversee how crime will be tackled in your police force area. Their aims will be to cut crime and to ensure your police force is effective. They will bring more of a public voice to policing and they will do this by: • regularly engaging and meeting with the public to help set police and crime plans; • ensuring the police force budget is spent where it matters most; and • appointing the chief constable, and (if necessary) dismissing them if they have not performed well. The PCC will not 'run' the police force. Chief constables will continue to be responsible for the dayto-day operations of the police force, but they will be accountable to the public via PCCs. For more information visit www.policecrimecommissioner.co.uk/Hampshire.
DAVID GOODALL Liberal Democrat Candidate One
David Goodall has been re-elected three times as an Eastleigh councillor. Son to a retired Hampshire police inspector and brother to a serving officer, David Goodall has been selected to stand for the Liberal Democrats. He has been re-elected three times as an Eastleigh councillor and also works at an electronics engineering firm. Mr Goodall believes officers' time should be spent doing police work and not paperwork.
SIMON HAYES Independent Candidate Two
Simon Hayes was a Conservative councillor but is now running as an independent candidate Simon Hayes, who is standing as an independent candidate, is the chairman of Crimestoppers Hampshire and Isle of Wight and a past chairman of Hampshire Police Authority. He was previously a Conservative district and county councillor and was leader of New Forest District Council. His priorities are to have sufficient numbers of police and community support officers so "criminals will know they will get caught", tackle anti-social behaviour and crackdown on violence, burglary and theft.

Losing her Locks Becca Sellwood Stock has a lot to deal with at the moment with two close family members being seriously ill. You’d think the physical and mental toll of coping with that would be enough really, but some people in life put the rest of us to shame. To raise funds for the charities related to her family members’ illnesses, Becca organised a charity shopping event in October, working with West End Councillor Anne Mortimer because of her recent battle with cancer. But Becca also did something few of us ladies would ever contemplate: she had her head shaved. Becca tells us: “My sister and I are raising money for Alzheimer's Society and Cancer Research. Our mum has Alzheimer’s; she is only 64 and in a care home. And my father in law has lung cancer and has been told that he has just a few weeks to live. It is so sad to see, and I’d love to see these conditions being caught earlier and treated more successfully. The only way this will happen though is if there are more funds for research and support”. Becca is a regular client at the West One salon in Hedge End and asked owner Karen Fox if she’d be prepared to do the head shave for her. So at the end of a really successful day at the shopping event on the 27th October, Karen armed herself with clippers and Becca’s lovely dark hair was all taken off. Karen said “I’m looking forward to introducing Becca to some funky new hairstyles and colours as her hair grows back”. It’s headline grabbing stuff (‘scuse the pun) but such a great cause. Having already raised over £800 through online and offline donations, the shopping event, and through support from West One and their clients, Becca is asking people to dig deep and just donate whatever they can for her charities. Even if all you can spare is £1 it all helps.
You can donate at Becca’s Virgin Money Giving page at http://tinyurl.com/BeccaSS. It takes some courage to have your head shaved, so don’t just turn the page, go and donate now.

Plates PCs The old butcher’s shop in the centre of Bishops Waltham has recently been taken over by IT Specialists, Plates PC. Wez Hall is the managing director, and heart and soul of the company. From a young age Wez has always had the approach that to understand how something works, you must take it apart, assess it, fiddle and then rebuild it. This was not always popular, when relatives saw him taking apart expensive gadgets and gizmos they had chosen for him, but ideal in this industry. The perfectionist in him, has seen many a computer taken apart several times and rebuilt until he is satisfied, despite it being 2am! This approach is still with him in what is not only a business but a passion. For Wez, a typical day isn’t complete without a computer being dismantled, rebuilt and reinstalled. So you can understand why his wife is celebrating that this now takes place at the work premises and no longer at home. Wez took the plunge to open up a shop/ office within the local community to raise the profile of the company and to meet the growing demands of the business. Having a base situated in the heart of the village has been great for business and the response from the community has been amazing, and the general feeling from Wez and his customers, is that they should have opened the shop years ago. Plates PCs has over ten years IT experience,

Chevy has sold more than 1.3 million Cruzes worldwide - now they’ve added an estate model to the range. What is it? This is the Cruze that dealers have been waiting for. Last year Chevy dealers received the much needed five-door hatch, but they have been unable to provide a competitive offering in the popular C-segment estate sector - until now. It’s practical with 1,478 litres of boot space with the seats down, and it also brings in a facelift for the Cruze range, new technology and the death knell for the Cruze four-door saloon - it’s been discontinued. What’s under the bonnet? Quite simply the choice is limited to two petrols and a diesel. The petrols come in the flavour of a 128bhp 1.6 and a 139bhp 1.8. The majority of buyers will opt for the 128bhp 1.7-litre diesel as it’s the best all-rounder. We also tried a 1.4-litre petrol and 2.0-litre diesel at launch, but there are no current plans to introduce these to the UK yet. What’s the spec like? Just like the five-door hatchback, Chevrolet is generous with the list of standard equipment. The range kicks off at £15,375 for the 1.6-litre LS which comes with air con, MP3 connectivity and electric mirrors and prices top out at

£19,785 for the 1.7-litre LTZ Nav model. This is very reasonably priced and boasts alloy wheels, climate control, sat nav, cruise control and rear parking sensors. What’s it like to drive? When it comes to the test drive, we would advise customers to try different versions. Why? Petrol versions are soft, wallowy and aren’t involving to drive. However, the 1.7-litre diesel version – thanks to more weight over the front wheels – is far more pleasurable to drive. The six-speed auto (1.8-litre LT) is not the best. What do the press think of it? The Independent said: ‘Most parts of the world like it and buy it in big numbers. Now that the Station Wagon has arrived, more UK buyers can be expected to join in.’ Auto Express, however, concluded: ‘The Cruze SW makes plenty of sense as a family choice, thanks to its spacious, clever boot and refined, comfortable drive, but the Ford Focus estate is sharper and much more fun to drive.’ What do we think of it? We’ve never been huge fans of the Cruze range, deeming it to be the Astra’s poorer cousin and not that attractive. But the SW changes that – yes, a Focus may be more fun to drive, but few rivals match the SW’s package of attractive styling and great value for money. The Cruze is no longer a left-field choice. by James Baggott, editor of Car Dealer Magazine (CarDealerMag.co.uk)

Leaves Are you surrounded, engulfed and swamped with huge quantities of fallen leaves? The deluge that falls at this time of year is often enough to make even the most level headed, tree-loving gardener eye up a chainsaw. So what can you do? Turn them in to gardeners’ gold: leafmould. If you want an environmentally friendly and very effective soil conditioner or mulching material, leafmould is the answer. If you have the space, make yourself a leafmould cage. Simply drive four treated softwood stakes into the ground, each stake marking out one corner of the ‘cage’. The stakes need to be about 1.5m (5ft) long so that they can be driven in really well, to a depth of 1-2ft, leaving 3-4ft above ground. Then attach some galvanized chicken wire to the stakes to create the sides of the cage and cram the cage full of leaves. If they aren’t moist, add a watering can of water to the heap of leaves, pouring some in after each six inches of leaves. You can also speed up the process by using a leafmould activator (available from garden centres, mail order catalogues and websites). Most deciduous leaves rot down well, especially oak and beech trees. Leaves from fruit trees, garden shrubs and climbers work well too. Try to avoid including too many twigs or evergreen leaves as these take much longer to rot, as do tough, leathery leaves such as those from sycamore, horse chestnut and plane. Most of us collect leaves using a springtined rake and although slower, it helps you avoid some materials more easily. A leaf sucker or a leaf blower is quicker but will often mean you end up with more twigs and stones. If your leaves are a wide-ranging assortment, then a good idea is to use the lawn mower – just mow the lawn with the leaves on it. The collection bag on the mower will then be
full of a brilliant mix of chopped leaves and even the slower-to-rot-down types will rot speedily as they have been chopped up quite finely. Mixed with the lush, high-nitrogen grass clippings, the whole process is sped up. If space, time or money are short then you can also make leafmould in a bin liner or bin bag. Choose a good quality bin liner and cram it full of leaves, again adding water and/or activator if you wish. Then stab a few holes in the bag with a garden fork, loosely fold over the top of the bag and weigh it down with a brick. You should have a useable product in 1218 months, but the longer you leave it the better. Leafmould will help to improve the moisture-retaining capacity of a light, sandy soil and increase the aeration and drainage of a heavy clay soil. It also makes wonderful mulch that can be used on flower beds and borders, the vegetable plot, around trees and shrubs and on your fruit as well. It’s not often you get something for nothing, is it? So take advantage of all those leaves while you can.
