Hello Residents It’s good to give; whether it’s your time or money or both as there is always someone less fortunate than us. I’ve been struck this month by the number of letters and emails I’ve had from local charities with updates on their appeals or asking to promote an event in the magazine free of charge (which I do willingly). So I’ve dedicated quite a few community pages to these charitable causes not least my plea for sponsorship to complete the Great South Run this month in aid of the Red & White Appeal (I confess, I had a few too many glasses of wine at a function and won the bid for the place much to my husband’s amusement). It’s a long shot but if every household who receives this magazine (14,000 homes) donates even just £1 on My Virgin MoneyGiving page that would be £14,000 ! (see pg 4)
sailing club on the back of the exposure sailing got on tv and our local doctor, who was a Games Maker for two weeks, has taken up archery with his daughter so let’s hope all that money and effort spent on the games leaves a positive legacy after all. Next issue will be out late November no doubt with a Christmas theme – cripes! Cheers

As a last follow up to the Olympics I’ve researched where you can take up on a few of the less promoted sports (see pg 24). My daughter has joined the college

A big slice of support from leukaemia patient & husband
Gill and Ray with their £1,000 cake!
In 2002, Gill Adkins, 53 found that the glands in her neck were swollen and showing no signs of going down. After a visit to her GP she was tested and found to have leukaemia cells. After many difficult years of treatment, recurrences and remissions, Gill, in April this year underwent a Bone Marrow Transplant in Southampton Hospital. Living in Christchurch, she will have to make regular return visits to the hospital, twice a week for check-ups.
Southampton Hospital Charity’s Red & White Appeal aims to raise £1.76million to create a dedicated day treatment unit for patients like Gill. When Gill and husband Ray found out about the Red & White Appeal they were keen to help, having experienced first-hand the need for a new treatment area to enhance patient care. Husband Ray said, “We found out that ward sister Yvonne Lo and the team regularly sell home-made cakes and biscuits to raise money for the appeal and decided to make a bid for a particularly tasty cake.” Reflecting on her treatment so far, Gill said, “I will be eternally grateful for the help, encouragement and high level of professional treatment that I’ve received from all of the team at Southampton. Our donation is just a small token of our appreciation. I just really like home-made cakes!” To find out more or to make a donation to the Red & White Appeal please call 023 8079 8881 or visit www.redandwhiteappeal.org
Would you sponsor me for £1? It’s nearly 10 years since I ran 10 miles but I couldn’t turn down the opportunity to help raise the remaining £300,000 of Southampton Hospital’s Red & White Appeal by running the Great South Run in October.
Just finished! After a half marathon in 2004.
I publish your Discover Bitterne magazine and if every house that gets a copy donates just £1, I’d raise £14,000! Wouldn’t that be fantastic? Please help and visit http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/DiscoverSouthampton and make a small donation to this worthy cause. Thank you.

DISCOVER HART During a recent walkabout in Bitterne talking to local businesses, advertisers and retailers, the swans on the River Itchen flapping away drew me to the river where I saw a team of people in wetsuits. It turns out the team of five worked for ambulance crew training as members of HART. So here’s more about what they do and do be surprised if you see more wetsuited bodies saving each other from the riverside of Bitterne Park! Hailey Tinson

Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) THe Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) initiative was born from a need for ambulance service paramedics to triage and treat patients within particularly hazardous, and/or potentially contaminated areas. Ambulance personnel have not traditionally worked in the inner cordon (hot zone) of a hazardous incident but have waited for Fire & Rescue crews to bring casualties out of the inner cordon. However, it was recognised that delays in providing immediate treatment to casualties within the inner cordon could result in unnecessary loss of life. The HART project, funded by the Department of Health, was initiated in 2005 to provide the ambulance service with the capability to work within the inner cordon at CBRNe (Chemical Biological Radiological Nuclear Explosive) or HAZMAT (Hazardous Materials) incidents and other appropriate major incidents. HART forms part of the health response in support of the national capabilities programme being led by the Home Office. This programme aims to ensure that fewer lives would be risked or lost in the event of a terrorist CBRN incident or an accidental release of hazardous materials. South Central Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SCAS) HART provides one of the 15 teams across England and consists of 7 teams of 6 paramedics on each team. SCAS HART members are specially recruited paramedics who have been trained to provide lifesaving emergency medical care in hostile and difficult
6
environments such as industrial accidents, natural disasters or other complex incidents such as train crashes, large-scale motorway accidents, building collapses, significant fires or flooding. These scenarios could be the result of an accident, environment or could have been caused deliberately. The team also has a role in looking after other emergency service personnel who may become injured whilst attending incidents. Throughout the year, SCAS HART has attended many varied incidences and provides support for fire crews at multiple pump fires, strengthens multi-agency relationships and clinical support to operational staff if required. Recent jobs attended by SCAS HART teams include a fire at Winchester Hospital, a fire at a Basingstoke warehouse, a variety of Road Traffic Collisions and a dock rescue. Above is one of the SCAS HART teams out on a training session in Bitterne Park practicing tethered swim rescue techniques. HART teams train every 7th week to maintain current clinical and technical rescue skills. This is an opportunity to keep on top of initial training and to forge new relationships with other Emergency Services Partners such as Hampshire Fire and Rescue and their USAR team, Military Dockyard Fire and Rescue teams, Hampshire Police, MOD Police, Coastguard and the Force Support Unit.

DISCOVER HISTORy
Suited & Booted A snapshot of pre-war Southampton OTTeRBOuRne resident Duncan Holley, has been collecting memorabilia and photos of Southampton FC for 40 odd years. This has been done by going to post-card fairs, internet, agencies etc - all the usual places - but also spending many hours driving around the country visiting old players and their families to beg, steal or borrow their photographs or take photos of their medals and caps.
Most of us are fascinated to see images from so many years ago whether football related or not. Every single man in the crowd (it would be easier to find the eponymous character in Where’s Wally, than to spot a woman in this crowd) is wearing a white shirt, a tie, a jacket and a hat. Many are smoking cigarettes or pipes. And it’s unlikely that any of them are still alive today.
The club gave him official historian status in 1998 which was a great help when resourcing these photos and the club's history but still, sometimes he had to pay up to £300 to acquire an image. As the club's post war history had already been comprehensively covered by Duncan’s previous book "In that Number" in 2003, he thought it was time to do something for the pre-war period and so he has released “Suited and Booted”. Because the history was comparatively ancient (no one alive who remembers it) he had to include a potted abridged script to accompany the photos, but he realised it would be the photos that would make the book attractive as you can see above.
makes this beautifully illustrated and designed book a must-have for Southampton supporters, especially with the team’s higher profile now they have returned to the Premier League.

But of course it’s the history of the club itself that

Local centre offers hearing hope for British Troops leading Hampshire A hearing centre has joined a scheme run in conjunction with Help for Heroes to offer free, state-of-the art hearing instruments to veteran British Servicemen and women who have been discharged from the army due to damaged hearing in recent conflicts. The Hampshire Hearing Centre, which is part of the Association of Independent Hearing Healthcare Professionals (AIHHP), has teamed up with the charity and Phonak, the world’s leading manufacturer of hearing instruments, to help those who have suffered a hearing impairment in Britain’s current conflicts and have been discharged as a result. Former troops who have served in recent conflicts and fit the above criteria will be eligible to benefit from this scheme. As well as a choice of cutting edge hearing instruments, eligible veteran Servicemen and women will be given freeinstrument fitting and a series of follow up appointments from members of AIHHP.
14
The 9,500 British troops currently stationed in Afghanistan are regularly exposed to the blast of guns or ‘medium’ explosions measuring 140 decibels (dB) – far exceeding the noise level of 85 dB at which hearing damage can occur. As a result of this noise exposure, troops are at a high risk of suffering severe and even permanent hearing damage. Head of Welfare at Help for Heroes, Kathy Knell MBE said: “The new partnership with Phonak and AIHHP is a very positive step which will help a lot of returning troops. Addressing hearing loss gives people the ability and confidence to hear clearly and improve their overall quality of life.” Mr Gary Whettingsteel from the Hampshire Hearing Centre in Chandlers Ford said: “It is a privilege to have this opportunity to make a positive impact on the lives of our brave Service men and women and we welcome them to our centre.” For more detailsabout the programme, please visit www.hearingadvisor.co.uk or www.aihhp.org

DISCOVER BUSINESS
Sexism in the Workplace by Alan Price Peninsula Group Director
££ £
£
IT may seem old fashioned but sexism in the workplace is still an issue that needs to be addressed. Acts of sexism are liable to be punished under the equality Act 2010, legislation put in place to clamp down on any form of sexist discrimination in workplace. The most common form of sexism in the workplace is whereby a member of one sex is treated less favourably than a member of the other sex simply due to their gender; this is known as direct discrimination. Indirect discrimination occurs where a rule or criterion in a workplace puts a particular gender at a disadvantage. Peninsula Business Services state that sexual harassment is the most frequently occurring type of sexist discrimination, with many people not realising the possible consequences to what they think of as a joke. Said consequences can take the form of a sex discrimination claim thus Peninsula Business Services state that it is essential to create a workplace in which it is clear that such behaviour will not be tolerated and that any abuse of anti-discrimination policy will be consistently punished. The procedure for reporting harassment is set out by Peninsula whereby an employee should raise a grievance which would need to be dealt with under an organisations grievance procedure or personal harassment procedure where there is one. It is important to note that where a sex discrimination claim is made to a tribunal, there is no upper cap on the amount of compensation that can be awarded for a successful claim. Under the vicarious liability provisions, where an employer cannot show that it took measures to ensure discrimination does not occur in their workplace, the employer will also be held responsible for compensation for discrimination in respect of a matter of which he had no control or knowledge. For more information on sexism in the workplace please contact Peninsula’s 24/7 Advice Service on 0844 892 2772.
